This report describes the physics case, the resulting detector requirements, and the evolving detector concepts for the experimental program at the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). The EIC will be a powerful new high-luminosity facility in the United States with the capability to collide high-energy electron beams with high-energy proton and ion beams, providing access to those regions in the nucleon and nuclei where their structure is dominated by gluons. Moreover, polarized beams in the EIC will give unprecedented access to the spatial and spin structure of the proton, neutron, and light ions. The studies leading to this document were commissioned and organized by the EIC User Group with the objective of advancing the state and detail of the physics program and developing detector concepts that meet the emerging requirements in preparation for the realization of the EIC. The effort aims to provide the basis for further development of concepts for experimental equipment best suited for the science needs, including the importance of two complementary detectors and interaction regions. This report consists of three volumes. Volume I is an executive summary of our findings and developed concepts. In Volume II we describe studies of a wide range of physics measurements and the emerging requirements on detector acceptance and performance. Volume III discusses general-purpose detector concepts and the underlying technologies to meet the physics requirements. The Large Hadron electron Collider (LHeC) is designed to move the field of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) to the energy and intensity frontier of particle physics. Exploiting energy recovery technology, it collides a novel, intense electron beam with a proton or ion beam from the High Luminosity--Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). The accelerator and interaction region are designed for concurrent electron-proton and proton-proton operation. This report represents an update of the Conceptual Design Report (CDR) of the LHeC, published in 2012. It comprises new results on parton structure of the proton and heavier nuclei, QCD dynamics, electroweak and top-quark physics. It is shown how the LHeC will open a new chapter of nuclear particle physics in extending the accessible kinematic range in lepton-nucleus scattering by several orders of magnitude. Due to enhanced luminosity, large energy and the cleanliness of the hadronic final states, the LHeC has a strong Higgs physics programme and its own discovery potential for new physics. Building on the 2012 CDR, the report represents a detailed updated design of the energy recovery electron linac (ERL) including new lattice, magnet, superconducting radio frequency technology and further components. Challenges of energy recovery are described and the lower energy, high current, 3-turn ERL facility, PERLE at Orsay, is presented which uses the LHeC characteristics serving as a development facility for the design and operation of the LHeC. An updated detector design is presented corresponding to the acceptance, resolution and calibration goals which arise from the Higgs and parton density function physics programmes. We studied the $ep\rightarrow ep+2jets$ diffractive cross section with ZEUS phase space. Neglecting the $t$-channel momentum in the Born and gluon dipole impact factors, we calculated the corresponding contributions to the cross section differential in $\beta=\frac{Q^{2}}{Q^{2}+M_{2jets}^{2}}$ and the angle $\phi$ between the leptonic and hadronic planes. The gluon dipole contribution was obtained in the exclusive $k_{t}$-algorithm with the exclusive cut $y_{cut}=0.15$ in the small $y_{cut}$ approximation. In the collinear approximation we canceled singularities between real and virtual contributions to the $q\bar{q}$ dipole configuration, keeping the exact $y_{cut}$ dependency. We used the Golec-Biernat - W\"usthoff (GBW) parametrization for the dipole matrix element and linearized the double dipole contributions. The results give roughly $\frac{1}{2}$ of the observed cross section for small $\beta$ and coincides with it for large $\beta.$, Comment: 40 pages, 7 figures

Exclusive photoproduction of a $\gamma\,\pi^\pm$ pair in the kinematics where the pair has a large invariant mass and the final nucleon has a small transverse momentum is described in the collinear factorization framework. The scattering amplitude is calculated at leading order in $\alpha_s$ and the differential cross sections for the process are estimated in the kinematics of the JLab~12-GeV experiments. The order of magnitude of the predicted cross-sections seems sufficient for a dedicated experiment to be performed. In circular colliders, as well as in damping rings and synchrotron radiation light sources, beam halo is one of the critical issues limiting the performance as well as potentially causing component damage and activation. It is imperative to clearly understand the mechanisms that lead to halo formation and to test the available theoretical models. Elastic beam-gas scattering can drive particles to large oscillation amplitudes and be a potential source of beam halo. In this paper, numerical estimation and Monte Carlo simulations of this process at the ATF of KEK are presented. Experimental measurements of beam halo in the ATF2 beam line using a diamond sensor detector are also described, which clearly demonstrates the influence of the beam-gas scattering process on the transverse halo distribution.

In the spirit of Mueller-Navelet dijet production, we propose and study the inclusive production of a forward $J/\psi$ and a very backward jet at the LHC as an observable to reveal high-energy resummation effects \`a la BFKL. The separation of longitudinally and transversely polarized $\rho$ meson production allows to distinguish chiral-even and chiral-odd contributions. We present the calculation of the impact factor for the $\gamma^{(*)}\to q\bar{q}$ transition with one loop accuracy in arbitrary kinematics. The calculation was done within Balitsky's high energy operator expansion. Together with our previous result for the $\gamma^{(*)}\to q\bar{q} g$ Born impact factor it allows one to derive cross-sections for 2- (one loop) and 3-jet (Born) difractive electroproduction. We write such cross sections for the 2 and 3 jet exclusive diffractive electroproduction off a proton in terms of hadronic matrix elements of Wilson lines. For the 2-jet cross section we demonstrate the cancellation of IR, collinear and rapidity singularities. Our result can be directly exploited to describe the recently analyzed data on exclusive dijet production at HERA and used for the study of jet photoproduction in ultraperipheral proton or nuclear scattering., Comment: 54 pages, 2 figures

We first perform a complete NLL BFKL analysis supplemented by a BLM renormalization scale fixing procedure, which is successfully compared with recent CMS data. We compare the predictions given by the Non Relativistic QCD (NRQCD) approach to charmonium prediction and by the Color Evaporation Model. In NRQCD, we find that the $^3 S_1^{\, 8}$ part of the onium wavefunction is completely dominating the process. We define in the framework of light-cone collinear factorization method, the chiral-odd generalized parton distributions (GPDs) of a pseudoscalar hadron (such as the $\pi^0$) up to twist 6. For that, we introduce the relevant matrix elements for 2-parton non-local operators, as well as matrix elements for 3-parton non-local correlators. Their detailed parametrization is fixed based on parity, charge conjugation and time reversal invariance. The study of the production of Mueller-Navelet jets at hadron colliders, characterized as two forward jets separated by a large interval of rapidity, is known to be one of the best possible tests of the high energy dynamics of QCD. We analyze this process within a complete next-to-leading logarithm framework \`a la BFKL. In addition, we use the Brodsky-Lepage-Mackenzie procedure, here extended to the perturbative Regge dynamics, to fix the renormalization scale to its optimal value. We present a model for the polarized cross-sections of the hard diffractive leptoproduction of rho meson in the high energy limit. Our model is based on the light-cone collinear factorization of the virtual photon to rho meson impact factor when using the impact factor representation of the helicity amplitudes of the rho meson leptoproduction. This gauge invariant treatment when expressed in impact parameter space, leads to the factorization on one hand of the color dipole scattering amplitude and on the other hand of the distribution amplitudes of the rho meson up to twist 2 and 3. The measurement of azimuthal correlations of Mueller-Navelet jets is generally considered as a decisive test to reveal the effect of BFKL dynamics at hadron colliders. The first experimental study of these correlations at the LHC has been recently performed by the CMS collaboration. We show that the ratios of cosine moments of the azimuthal distribution are successfully described within our next-to-leading logarithmic BFKL treatment. We investigate the longitudinal and transverse polarized cross-sections of the leptoproduction of the rho meson in the high energy limit. Our model is based on the computation of the impact factor gamma*(lambda_gamma) -> rho(lambda_rho) using the twist expansion in the forward limit and expressed in the impact parameter space. This treatment involves in the final stage the twist 2 and twist 3 distribution amplitudes (DAs) of the rho meson and the dipole scattering amplitude. Double logarithms resummation has been much studied in inclusive as well as exclusive processes. The Sudakov mechanism has often be the crucial tool to exponentiate potentially large contributions to amplitudes or cross-sections near phase-space boundaries. We report on a recent work where a very different pattern emerges : the DVCS quark coefficient function C(x,\xi) develops, near the particular point x=\xi, a non-alternate series in \alpha_s^n log^{2n}(x-\xi) which may be resummed in a cosh[K sqrt \alpha_s log(x-\xi)] factor. We present a phenomenological model for the helicity amplitudes T11 and T00 of the rho meson exclusive diffractive leptoproduction in the forward limit. This model leads to a very good description of the polarized cross-sections sigmaT and sigmaL when compared to HERA data. This model is based on the impact factor representation of the helicity amplitudes. The gamma* -> rho impact factor is computed within the light-cone collinear factorization scheme, the impact parameter space representation allowing to factorize out the dipole-target amplitude. We define in a systematic way, based on the light-cone collinear factorization method, the chiral-odd generalized parton distributions (GPDs) of a pseudoscalar hadron (such as the pi0) up to twist 5. For that, we introduce the relevant matrix elements for 2-parton non-local operators, as well as matrix elements for 3-parton non-local correlators. Their detailed parametrization is fixed based on parity, charge conjugation and time reversal invariance. This leads to the introduction of 20 real GPDs, whose symmetry properties are explicitely given. The reduction of these GPDs to a minimal set is performed by the use of constraints provided by QCD equations of motion and rotation on the light-cone. We show that these 20 GPDs can be expressed through 8 GPDs which satisfy 4 integral sum rules. A surprising outcome of this analysis is the fact that, when assuming the vanishing of 3-parton correlators, as in the so-called Wandzura-Wilczek approximation, the whole set of GPDs vanishes., Comment: 27 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

In this Technical Design Report (TDR) we describe the SuperB detector that was to be installed on the SuperB e+e- high luminosity collider. The SuperB asymmetric collider, which was to be constructed on the Tor Vergata campus near the INFN Frascati National Laboratory, was designed to operate both at the Upsilon(4S) center-of-mass energy with a luminosity of 10^{36} cm^{-2}s^{-1} and at the tau/charm production threshold with a luminosity of 10^{35} cm^{-2}s^{-1}. This high luminosity, producing a data sample about a factor 100 larger than present B Factories, would allow investigation of new physics effects in rare decays, CP Violation and Lepton Flavour Violation. This document details the detector design presented in the Conceptual Design Report (CDR) in 2007. The R&D and engineering studies performed to arrive at the full detector design are described, and an updated cost estimate is presented. A combination of a more realistic cost estimates and the unavailability of funds due of the global economic climate led to a formal cancelation of the project on Nov 27, 2012., Comment: 495 pages

More than 25 years ago, Mueller Navelet jets were proposed as a decisive test of BFKL dynamics at hadron colliders. We here study this process at NLL BFKL accuracy, taking into account NLL corrections to the Green's function and to the jet vertices. We present detailed predictions for various observables that can be measured at LHC in ongoing experiments like ATLAS or CMS at sqrt{s}=7 TeV: the cross-section, the azimuthal correlations and the angular distribution of these jets. For this purpose, we apply realistic kinematical cuts and binning, and study the dependence of our results with respect to several parameters. We then compare our results with those that can be obtained in a fixed order NLO treatment, and propose specific observables which could actually be used as a probe of BFKL dynamics., Comment: 30 pages, 25 figures
