The $\mathcal{A}$-theory takes U-duality symmetry as a guiding principle, with the SL(5) U-duality symmetry being described as the world-volume theory of a 5-brane. Furthermore, by unifying the 6-dimensional world-volume Lorentz symmetry with the SL(5) spacetime symmetry, it extends to SL(6) U-duality symmetry. The SL(5) spacetime vielbein fields and the 5-brane world-volume vielbein fields are mixed under the SL(6) U-duality transformation. We demonstrate that consistent sectionings of the SL(6) $\mathcal{A}$5-brane world-volume Lagrangian yield Lagrangians of the ${\cal T}$-string with O(D,D) T-duality symmetry, the conventional string, the $\mathcal{M}$5-brane with GL(4) duality symmetry, and the non-perturbative M2-brane in supergravity theory. In this paper, we proposed a worldsheet construction of a subset of triple product amplitudes proposed by Huang and Remmen (2022). We start with closed bosonic strings but left and right-moving momenta are not necessarily equal. Instead, they satisfy certain conditions. We called them section conditions. These conditions are generalizations of the section condition in double field theory. The vertex operators of chiral strings have nontrivial monodromy, so we interpret them as attached to the end of defects. In the calculation of the amplitude, we not only have to integrate over the moduli space, we also have to sum over different defect configurations. Unitarity and other consistency conditions for chiral string amplitudes are checked. We found the graviton amplitude, the Virasoro amplitude, and also a special kind of amplitude that has one infinite spin tower. Similar kinds of amplitude have appeared in bootstrap literature. Multimodal neuroimaging modeling has becomes a widely used approach but confronts considerable challenges due to heterogeneity, which encompasses variability in data types, scales, and formats across modalities. This variability necessitates the deployment of advanced computational methods to integrate and interpret these diverse datasets within a cohesive analytical framework. In our research, we amalgamate functional magnetic resonance imaging, diffusion tensor imaging, and structural MRI into a cohesive framework. This integration capitalizes on the unique strengths of each modality and their inherent interconnections, aiming for a comprehensive understanding of the brain's connectivity and anatomical characteristics. Utilizing the Glasser atlas for parcellation, we integrate imaging derived features from various modalities: functional connectivity from fMRI, structural connectivity from DTI, and anatomical features from sMRI within consistent regions. Our approach incorporates a masking strategy to differentially weight neural connections, thereby facilitating a holistic amalgamation of multimodal imaging data. This technique enhances interpretability at connectivity level, transcending traditional analyses centered on singular regional attributes. The model is applied to the Human Connectome Project's Development study to elucidate the associations between multimodal imaging and cognitive functions throughout youth. The analysis demonstrates improved predictive accuracy and uncovers crucial anatomical features and essential neural connections, deepening our understanding of brain structure and function.

Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) is a noninvasive technique pivotal for understanding human neural mechanisms of intricate cognitive processes. Most rs-fMRI studies compute a single static functional connectivity matrix across brain regions of interest, or dynamic functional connectivity matrices with a sliding window approach. These approaches are at risk of oversimplifying brain dynamics and lack proper consideration of the goal at hand. While deep learning has gained substantial popularity for modeling complex relational data, its application to uncovering the spatiotemporal dynamics of the brain is still limited. We propose a novel interpretable deep learning framework that learns goal-specific functional connectivity matrix directly from time series and employs a specialized graph neural network for the final classification. Our model, DSAM, leverages temporal causal convolutional networks to capture the temporal dynamics in both low- and high-level feature representations, a temporal attention unit to identify important time points, a self-attention unit to construct the goal-specific connectivity matrix, and a novel variant of graph neural network to capture the spatial dynamics for downstream classification. To validate our approach, we conducted experiments on the Human Connectome Project dataset with 1075 samples to build and interpret the model for the classification of sex group, and the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Dataset with 8520 samples for independent testing. Compared our proposed framework with other state-of-art models, results suggested this novel approach goes beyond the assumption of a fixed connectivity matrix and provides evidence of goal-specific brain connectivity patterns, which opens up the potential to gain deeper insights into how the human brain adapts its functional connectivity specific to the task at hand., Comment: 18 Pages, 4 figures

Objective: fMRI and derived measures such as functional connectivity (FC) have been used to predict brain age, general fluid intelligence, psychiatric disease status, and preclinical neurodegenerative disease. However, it is not always clear that all demographic confounds, such as age, sex, and race, have been removed from fMRI data. Additionally, many fMRI datasets are restricted to authorized researchers, making dissemination of these valuable data sources challenging. Methods: We create a variational autoencoder (VAE)-based model, DemoVAE, to decorrelate fMRI features from demographics and generate high-quality synthetic fMRI data based on user-supplied demographics. We train and validate our model using two large, widely used datasets, the Philadelphia Neurodevelopmental Cohort (PNC) and Bipolar and Schizophrenia Network for Intermediate Phenotypes (BSNIP). Results: We find that DemoVAE recapitulates group differences in fMRI data while capturing the full breadth of individual variations. Significantly, we also find that most clinical and computerized battery fields that are correlated with fMRI data are not correlated with DemoVAE latents. An exception are several fields related to schizophrenia medication and symptom severity. Conclusion: Our model generates fMRI data that captures the full distribution of FC better than traditional VAE or GAN models. We also find that most prediction using fMRI data is dependent on correlation with, and prediction of, demographics. Significance: Our DemoVAE model allows for generation of high quality synthetic data conditioned on subject demographics as well as the removal of the confounding effects of demographics. Counting small cohesive subgraphs in a graph is a fundamental operation with numerous applications in graph analysis. Previous studies on cohesive subgraph counting are mainly based on the clique model, which aim to count the number of $k$-cliques in a graph with a small $k$. However, the clique model often proves too restrictive for practical use. To address this issue, we investigate a new problem of counting cohesive subgraphs that adhere to the hereditary property. Here the hereditary property means that if a graph $G$ has a property $\mathcal{P}$, then any induced subgraph of $G$ also has a property $\mathcal{P}$. To count these hereditary cohesive subgraphs (\hcss), we propose a new listing-based framework called \hcslist, which employs a backtracking enumeration procedure to count all \hcss. A notable limitation of \hcslist is that it requires enumerating all \hcss, making it intractable for large and dense graphs due to the exponential growth in the number of \hcss with respect to graph size. To overcome this limitation, we propose a novel pivot-based framework called \hcspivot, which can count most \hcss in a combinatorial manner without explicitly listing them. Two additional noteworthy features of \hcspivot is its ability to (1) simultaneously count \hcss of any size and (2) simultaneously count \hcss for each vertex or each edge, while \hcslist is only capable of counting a specific size of \hcs and obtaining a total count of \hcss in a graph. We focus specifically on two \hcs: $s$-defective clique and $s$-plex, with several non-trivial pruning techniques to enhance the efficiency. We conduct extensive experiments on 8 large real-world graphs, and the results demonstrate the high efficiency and effectiveness of our solutions.

Both functional and structural magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI and sMRI) are widely used for the diagnosis of mental disorder. However, combining complementary information from these two modalities is challenging due to their heterogeneity. Many existing methods fall short of capturing the interaction between these modalities, frequently defaulting to a simple combination of latent features. In this paper, we propose a novel Cross-Attentive Multi-modal Fusion framework (CAMF), which aims to capture both intra-modal and inter-modal relationships between fMRI and sMRI, enhancing multi-modal data representation. Specifically, our CAMF framework employs self-attention modules to identify interactions within each modality while cross-attention modules identify interactions between modalities. Subsequently, our approach optimizes the integration of latent features from both modalities. This approach significantly improves classification accuracy, as demonstrated by our evaluations on two extensive multi-modal brain imaging datasets, where CAMF consistently outperforms existing methods. Furthermore, the gradient-guided Score-CAM is applied to interpret critical functional networks and brain regions involved in schizophrenia. The bio-markers identified by CAMF align with established research, potentially offering new insights into the diagnosis and pathological endophenotypes of schizophrenia.

Functional connectivity (FC) as derived from fMRI has emerged as a pivotal tool in elucidating the intricacies of various psychiatric disorders and delineating the neural pathways that underpin cognitive and behavioral dynamics inherent to the human brain. While Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) offer a structured approach to represent neuroimaging data, they are limited by their need for a predefined graph structure to depict associations between brain regions, a detail not solely provided by FCs. To bridge this gap, we introduce the Gated Graph Transformer (GGT) framework, designed to predict cognitive metrics based on FCs. Empirical validation on the Philadelphia Neurodevelopmental Cohort (PNC) underscores the superior predictive prowess of our model, further accentuating its potential in identifying pivotal neural connectivities that correlate with human cognitive processes.

In this paper, we studied the relationship between celestial holography and chiral strings. Chiral strings differ from the usual string theory by a change of boundary conditions on the string propagators. It is shown that chiral strings would reproduce graviton amplitudes and could serve as an alternative description of Einstein's gravity. Celestial holography is a proposed duality between gravity in asymptotically flat space-time and a CFT living on its conformal boundary. Since both are CFT descriptions of gravity, we investigate the potential connection between these two formalisms. In this paper, we find that both the energetic as well as conformal soft theorems could be derived from the OPEs of vertex operators of chiral strings. Purpose: Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and functional connectivity (FC) have been used to follow aging in both children and older adults. Robust changes have been observed in children, where high connectivity among all brain regions changes to a more modular structure with maturation. In this work, we examine changes in FC in older adults after two years of aging in the UK Biobank longitudinal cohort. Approach: We process data using the Power264 atlas, then test whether FC changes in the 2,722-subject longitudinal cohort are statistically significant using a Bonferroni-corrected t-test. We also compare the ability of Power264 and UKB-provided, ICA-based FC to determine which of a longitudinal scan pair is older. Results: We find a 6.8\% average increase in SMT-VIS connectivity from younger to older scan (from $\rho=0.39$ to $\rho=0.42$) that occurs in male, female, older subject ($>65$ years old), and younger subject ($<55$ years old) groups. Among all inter-network connections, this average SMT-VIS connectivity is the best predictor of relative scan age, accurately predicting which scan is older 57\% of the time. Using the full FC and a training set of 2,000 subjects, one is able to predict which scan is older 82.5\% of the time using either the full Power264 FC or the UKB-provided ICA-based FC. Conclusions: We conclude that SMT-VIS connectivity increases in the longitudinal cohort, while resting state FC increases generally with age in the cross-sectional cohort. Functional magnetic resonance (fMRI) is an invaluable tool in studying cognitive processes in vivo. Many recent studies use functional connectivity (FC), partial correlation connectivity (PC), or fMRI-derived brain networks to predict phenotypes with results that sometimes cannot be replicated. At the same time, FC can be used to identify the same subject from different scans with great accuracy. In this paper, we show a method by which one can unknowingly inflate classification results from 61% accuracy to 86% accuracy by treating longitudinal or contemporaneous scans of the same subject as independent data points. Using the UK Biobank dataset, we find one can achieve the same level of variance explained with 50 training subjects by exploiting identifiability as with 10,000 training subjects without double-dipping. We replicate this effect in four different datasets: the UK Biobank (UKB), the Philadelphia Neurodevelopmental Cohort (PNC), the Bipolar and Schizophrenia Network for Intermediate Phenotypes (BSNIP), and an OpenNeuro Fibromyalgia dataset (Fibro). The unintentional improvement ranges between 7% and 25% in the four datasets. Additionally, we find that by using dynamic functional connectivity (dFC), one can apply this method even when one is limited to a single scan per subject. One major problem is that features such as ROIs or connectivities that are reported alongside inflated results may confuse future work. We propose a novel method, LoLep, which regresses Locally-Learned planes from a single RGB image to represent scenes accurately, thus generating better novel views. Without the depth information, regressing appropriate plane locations is a challenging problem. To solve this issue, we pre-partition the disparity space into bins and design a disparity sampler to regress local offsets for multiple planes in each bin. However, only using such a sampler makes the network not convergent; we further propose two optimizing strategies that combine with different disparity distributions of datasets and propose an occlusion-aware reprojection loss as a simple yet effective geometric supervision technique. We also introduce a self-attention mechanism to improve occlusion inference and present a Block-Sampling Self-Attention (BS-SA) module to address the problem of applying self-attention to large feature maps. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach and generate state-of-the-art results on different datasets. Compared to MINE, our approach has an LPIPS reduction of 4.8%-9.0% and an RV reduction of 73.9%-83.5%. In this paper, the ${\cal A}$-theory, an extension of F-theory, is described as a fully U-duality covariant brane theory. This theory has some distinguishing features not known from world-sheet models. In particular, seen as a sigma model, both world-volume and target space coordinates are specific representations of the same group (the U-duality group). The U-duality group in question is an exceptional group (a split form of the $E_d$ series). The structure of this group allows it to encompass both the T-duality group of string theory as well as the general linear symmetry group of ${\cal M}$-theory. ${\cal A}$-theory is defined by the current algebras in Hamiltonian formalism, or by world-volume actions in Lagrangian formalism. The spacetime coordinates are selfdual gauge fields on the world-volume, requiring the Gauss law constraints tying the world-volume to spacetime. Solving the Gauss law constraints/the Virasoro constraints gives the world-volume/spacetime sectioning from ${\cal A}$-theory to ${\cal T}$-theory/ ${\cal M}$-theory respectively. The ${\cal A}$-theory Lagrangian admits extended symmetry which has not been observed previously in the literature, where the background fields include both the spacetime and the world-volume gravitational fields. We also constructed the four-point amplitude of ${\cal A}$-theory in the low energy limit. The amplitude is written in a way that the U-duality symmetry is manifest, but after solving the section condition, it reduces to the usual four-graviton amplitude. Functional connectivity (FC) is one of the most common inputs to fMRI-based predictive models, due to a combination of its simplicity and robustness. However, there may be a lack of theoretical models for the generation of FC. In this work, we present a straightforward decomposition of FC into a set of basis states of sine waves with an additional jitter component. We show that the decomposition matches the predictive ability of FC after including 5-10 bases. We also find that both the decomposition and its residual have approximately equal predictive value, and when combined into an ensemble, exceed the AUC of FC-based prediction by up to 5%. Additionally, we find the residual can be used for subject fingerprinting, with 97.3% same-subject, different-scan identifiability, compared to 62.5% for FC. Unlike PCA or Factor Analysis methods, our method does not require knowledge of a population to perform its decomposition; a single subject is enough. Our decomposition of FC into two equally-predictive components may lead to a novel appreciation of group differences in patient populations. Additionally, we generate synthetic patient FC based on user-specified characteristics such as age, sex, and disease diagnosis. Most packages for the analysis of fMRI-based functional connectivity (FC) and genomic data are used with a programming language interface, lacking an easy-to-navigate GUI frontend. This exacerbates two problems found in these types of data: demographic confounds and quality control in the face of high dimensionality of features. The reason is that it is too slow and cumbersome to use a programming interface to create all the necessary visualizations required to identify all correlations, confounding effects, or quality control problems in a dataset. To remedy this situation, we have developed ImageNomer, a data visualization and analysis tool that allows inspection of both subject-level and cohort-level demographic, genomic, and imaging features. The software is Python-based, runs in a self-contained Docker image, and contains a browser-based GUI frontend. We demonstrate the usefulness of ImageNomer by identifying an unexpected race confound when predicting achievement scores in the Philadelphia Neurodevelopmental Cohort (PNC) dataset. In the past, many studies have attempted to use FC to identify achievement-related features in fMRI. Using ImageNomer, we find a clear potential for confounding effects of race. Using correlation analysis in the ImageNomer software, we show that FCs correlated with Wide Range Achievement Test (WRAT) score are in fact more highly correlated with race. Investigating further, we find that whereas both FC and SNP (genomic) features can account for 10-15\% of WRAT score variation, this predictive ability disappears when controlling for race. In this work, we demonstrate the advantage of our ImageNomer GUI tool in data exploration and confound detection. Some robust point cloud registration approaches with controllable pose refinement magnitude, such as ICP and its variants, are commonly used to improve 6D pose estimation accuracy. However, the effectiveness of these methods gradually diminishes with the advancement of deep learning techniques and the enhancement of initial pose accuracy, primarily due to their lack of specific design for pose refinement. In this paper, we propose Point Cloud Completion and Keypoint Refinement with Fusion Data (PCKRF), a new pose refinement pipeline for 6D pose estimation. The pipeline consists of two steps. First, it completes the input point clouds via a novel pose-sensitive point completion network. The network uses both local and global features with pose information during point completion. Then, it registers the completed object point cloud with the corresponding target point cloud by our proposed Color supported Iterative KeyPoint (CIKP) method. The CIKP method introduces color information into registration and registers a point cloud around each keypoint to increase stability. The PCKRF pipeline can be integrated with existing popular 6D pose estimation methods, such as the full flow bidirectional fusion network, to further improve their pose estimation accuracy. Experiments demonstrate that our method exhibits superior stability compared to existing approaches when optimizing initial poses with relatively high precision. Notably, the results indicate that our method effectively complements most existing pose estimation techniques, leading to improved performance in most cases. Objective: Endophenotypes such as brain age and fluid intelligence are important biomarkers of disease status. However, brain imaging studies to identify these biomarkers often encounter limited numbers of subjects and high dimensional imaging features, hindering reproducibility. Therefore, we develop an interpretable, multivariate classification/regression algorithm, called Latent Similarity (LatSim), suitable for small sample size, high feature dimension datasets. Methods: LatSim combines metric learning with a kernel similarity function and softmax aggregation to identify task-related similarities between subjects. Inter-subject similarity is utilized to improve performance on three prediction tasks using multi-paradigm fMRI data. A greedy selection algorithm, made possible by LatSim's computational efficiency, is developed as an interpretability method. Results: LatSim achieved significantly higher predictive accuracy at small sample sizes on the Philadelphia Neurodevelopmental Cohort (PNC) dataset. Connections identified by LatSim gave superior discriminative power compared to those identified by other methods. We identified 4 functional brain networks enriched in connections for predicting brain age, sex, and intelligence. Conclusion: We find that most information for a predictive task comes from only a few (1-5) connections. Additionally, we find that the default mode network is over-represented in the top connections of all predictive tasks. Significance: We propose a novel algorithm for small sample, high feature dimension datasets and use it to identify connections in task fMRI data. A new set of boundary conditions for string propagators is proposed in this paper. The boundary conditions are parametrized by a complex number $\lambda$. Under these new boundary conditions, the left-moving and right-moving modes are treated unequally. Thus, we called them chiral string theories. If $\lambda = -1$, the spectrum of such theory truncates to a finite number, and therefore it becomes a different description of supergravity. We found the spectrum of chiral string theories by requiring that the vertex operators are conformally invariant. In addition, we also calculate the amplitudes for arbitrary $\lambda$. The amplitudes are expressed as a product of open string amplitudes which are similar to the KLT relation. The unitarity of these theories are investigated. However, we found out that except for $\lambda = \pm 1$, all other theories are not unitary; i.e., only the supergravity and ordinary strings are unitary. We present a novel self-supervised algorithm named MotionHint for monocular visual odometry (VO) that takes motion constraints into account. A key aspect of our approach is to use an appropriate motion model that can help existing self-supervised monocular VO (SSM-VO) algorithms to overcome issues related to the local minima within their self-supervised loss functions. The motion model is expressed with a neural network named PPnet. It is trained to coarsely predict the next pose of the camera and the uncertainty of this prediction. Our self-supervised approach combines the original loss and the motion loss, which is the weighted difference between the prediction and the generated ego-motion. Taking two existing SSM-VO systems as our baseline, we evaluate our MotionHint algorithm on the standard KITTI benchmark. Experimental results show that our MotionHint algorithm can be easily applied to existing open-sourced state-of-the-art SSM-VO systems to greatly improve the performance by reducing the resulting ATE by up to 28.73%., Comment: Accepted by ICRA 2022

In stable coronary artery disease (CAD), reduction in mortality and/or myocardial infarction with revascularization over medical therapy has not been reliably achieved. Coronary arteries are usually extracted to perform stenosis detection. We aim to develop an automatic algorithm by deep learning to extract coronary arteries from ICAs.In this study, a multi-input and multi-scale (MIMS) U-Net with a two-stage recurrent training strategy was proposed for the automatic vessel segmentation. Incorporating features such as the Inception residual module with depth-wise separable convolutional layers, the proposed model generated a refined prediction map with the following two training stages: (i) Stage I coarsely segmented the major coronary arteries from pre-processed single-channel ICAs and generated the probability map of vessels; (ii) during the Stage II, a three-channel image consisting of the original preprocessed image, a generated probability map, and an edge-enhanced image generated from the preprocessed image was fed to the proposed MIMS U-Net to produce the final segmentation probability map. During the training stage, the probability maps were iteratively and recurrently updated by feeding into the neural network. After segmentation, an arterial stenosis detection algorithm was developed to extract vascular centerlines and calculate arterial diameters to evaluate stenotic level. Experimental results demonstrated that the proposed method achieved an average Dice score of 0.8329, an average sensitivity of 0.8281, and an average specificity of 0.9979 in our dataset with 294 ICAs obtained from 73 patient. Moreover, our stenosis detection algorithm achieved a true positive rate of 0.6668 and a positive predictive value of 0.7043.

Objective: Multi-modal functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) can be used to make predictions about individual behavioral and cognitive traits based on brain connectivity networks. Methods: To take advantage of complementary information from multi-modal fMRI, we propose an interpretable multi-modal graph convolutional network (MGCN) model, incorporating the fMRI time series and the functional connectivity (FC) between each pair of brain regions. Specifically, our model learns a graph embedding from individual brain networks derived from multi-modal data. A manifold-based regularization term is then enforced to consider the relationships of subjects both within and between modalities. Furthermore, we propose the gradient-weighted regression activation mapping (Grad-RAM) and the edge mask learning to interpret the model, which is used to identify significant cognition-related biomarkers. Results: We validate our MGCN model on the Philadelphia Neurodevelopmental Cohort to predict individual wide range achievement test (WRAT) score. Our model obtains superior predictive performance over GCN with a single modality and other competing approaches. The identified biomarkers are cross-validated from different approaches. Conclusion and Significance: This paper develops a new interpretable graph deep learning framework for cognitive ability prediction, with the potential to overcome the limitations of several current data-fusion models. The results demonstrate the power of MGCN in analyzing multi-modal fMRI and discovering significant biomarkers for human brain studies.

The data loss caused by unreliable network seriously impacts the results of remote visual SLAM systems. From our experiment, a loss of less than 1 second of data can cause a visual SLAM algorithm to lose tracking. We present a novel buffering method, ORBBuf, to reduce the impact of data loss on remote visual SLAM systems. We model the buffering problem as an optimization problem by introducing a similarity metric between frames. To solve the buffering problem, we present an efficient greedy-like algorithm to discard the frames that have the least impact on the quality of SLAM results. We implement our ORBBuf method on ROS, a widely used middleware framework. Through an extensive evaluation on real-world scenarios and tens of gigabytes of datasets, we demonstrate that our ORBBuf method can be applied to different state-estimation algorithms (DSO and VINS-Fusion), different sensor data (both monocular images and stereo images), different scenes (both indoor and outdoor), and different network environments (both WiFi networks and 4G networks). Our experimental results indicate that the network losses indeed affect the SLAM results, and our ORBBuf method can reduce the RMSE up to 50 times comparing with the Drop-Oldest and Random buffering methods.

We propose 4-point S-matrices for three-dimensional F-theory. We will use the twistor formalism to facilitate constructing the amplitude. We write the amplitude in a way such that the F-symmetry (U-duality symmetry) is manifest. The amplitude can be schematically written as $A_{4} = w^{4}/stu$, where $w$ is an analog of the linearized Weyl tensor in F-theory, and $w^{4}$ is a shorthand for the sum of various contractions that can happen between the Weyl tensors. The gauge invariance is actually non-trivial since $w$ is in general not gauge invariant. With the help of the twistor formalism, one can verify that this formula is indeed gauge invariant. Functional connectivity (FC) has been widely used to study brain network interactions underlying the emerging cognition and behavior of an individual. FC is usually defined as the correlation or partial correlation between brain regions. Although FC is proved to be a good starting point to understand the brain organization, it fails to tell the causal relationship or the direction of interactions. Many directed acyclic graph (DAG) based methods were applied to study the directed interactions using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data but the performance was severely limited by the small sample size and high dimensionality, hindering its applications. To overcome the obstacles, we propose a score based joint directed acyclic graph model to estimate the directed FC in fMRI data. Instead of using a combinatorial optimization framework, the structure of DAG is characterized with an algebra equation and further regularized with sparsity and group similarity terms. The simulation results have demonstrated the improved accuracy of the proposed model in detecting causality as compared to other existing methods. In our case-control study of the MIND Clinical Imaging Consortium (MCIC) data, we have successfully identified decreased functional integration, disrupted hub structures and characteristic edges (CtEs) in schizophrenia (SZ) patients. Further comparison between the results from directed FC and undirected FC illustrated the their different emphasis on selected features. We speculate that combining the features from undirected graphical model and directed graphical model might be a promising way to do FC analysis.

Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI)-derived functional connectivity patterns have been extensively utilized to delineate global functional organization of the human brain in health, development, and neuropsychiatric disorders. In this paper, we investigate how functional connectivity in males and females differs in an age prediction framework. We first estimate functional connectivity between regions-of-interest (ROIs) using distance correlation instead of Pearson's correlation. Distance correlation, as a multivariate statistical method, explores spatial relations of voxel-wise time courses within individual ROIs and measures both linear and nonlinear dependence, capturing more complex information of between-ROI interactions. Then, a novel non-convex multi-task learning (NC-MTL) model is proposed to study age-related gender differences in functional connectivity, where age prediction for each gender group is viewed as one task. Specifically, in the proposed NC-MTL model, we introduce a composite regularizer with a combination of non-convex $\ell_{2,1-2}$ and $\ell_{1-2}$ regularization terms for selecting both common and task-specific features. Finally, we validate the proposed NC-MTL model along with distance correlation based functional connectivity on rs-fMRI of the Philadelphia Neurodevelopmental Cohort for predicting ages of both genders. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed NC-MTL model outperforms other competing MTL models in age prediction, as well as characterizing developmental gender differences in functional connectivity patterns.

The dynamic characteristics of functional network connectivity have been widely acknowledged and studied. Both shared and unique information has been shown to be present in the connectomes. However, very little has been known about whether and how this common pattern can predict the individual variability of the brain, i.e. "brain fingerprinting", which attempts to reliably identify a particular individual from a pool of subjects. In this paper, we propose to enhance the individual uniqueness based on an autoencoder network. More specifically, we rely on the hypothesis that the common neural activities shared across individuals may lessen individual discrimination. By reducing contributions from shared activities, inter-subject variability can be enhanced. Results show that that refined connectomes utilizing an autoencoder with sparse dictionary learning can successfully distinguish one individual from the remaining participants with reasonably high accuracy (up to 99:5% for the rest-rest pair). Furthermore, high-level cognitive behavior (e.g., fluid intelligence, executive function, and language comprehension) can also be better predicted using refined functional connectivity profiles. As expected, the high-order association cortices contributed more to both individual discrimination and behavior prediction. The proposed approach provides a promising way to enhance and leverage the individualized characteristics of brain networks.

Emotion perception is essential to affective and cognitive development which involves distributed brain circuits. The ability of emotion identification begins in infancy and continues to develop throughout childhood and adolescence. Understanding the development of brain's emotion circuitry may help us explain the emotional changes observed during adolescence. Our previous study delineated the trajectory of brain functional connectivity (FC) from late childhood to early adulthood during emotion identification tasks. In this work, we endeavour to deepen our understanding from association to causation. We proposed a Bayesian incorporated linear non-Gaussian acyclic model (BiLiNGAM), which incorporated our previous association model into the prior estimation pipeline. In particular, it can jointly estimate multiple directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) for multiple age groups at different developmental stages. Simulation results indicated more stable and accurate performance over various settings, especially when the sample size was small (high-dimensional cases). We then applied to the analysis of real data from the Philadelphia Neurodevelopmental Cohort (PNC). This included 855 individuals aged 8-22 years who were divided into five different adolescent stages. Our network analysis revealed the development of emotion-related intra- and inter- modular connectivity and pinpointed several emotion-related hubs. We further categorized the hubs into two types: in-hubs and out-hubs, as the center of receiving and distributing information. Several unique developmental hub structures and group-specific patterns were also discovered. Our findings help provide a causal understanding of emotion development in the human brain.

Functional connectivity (FC) has become a primary means of understanding brain functions by identifying brain network interactions and, ultimately, how those interactions produce cognitions. A popular definition of FC is by statistical associations between measured brain regions. However, this could be problematic since the associations can only provide spatial connections but not causal interactions among regions of interests. Hence, it is necessary to study their causal relationship. Directed acyclic graph (DAG) models have been applied in recent FC studies but often encountered problems such as limited sample sizes and large number of variables (namely high-dimensional problems), which lead to both computational difficulty and convergence issues. As a result, the use of DAG models is problematic, where the identification of DAG models in general is nondeterministic polynomial time hard (NP-hard). To this end, we propose a $\psi$-learning incorporated linear non-Gaussian acyclic model ($\psi$-LiNGAM). We use the association model ($\psi$-learning) to facilitate causal inferences and the model works well especially for high-dimensional cases. Our simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method is more robust and accurate than several existing ones in detecting graph structure and direction. We then applied it to the resting state fMRI (rsfMRI) data obtained from the publicly available Philadelphia Neurodevelopmental Cohort (PNC) to study the cognitive variance, which includes 855 individuals aged 8-22 years. Therein, we have identified three types of hub structure: the in-hub, out-hub and sum-hub, which correspond to the centers of receiving, sending and relaying information, respectively. We also detected 16 most important pairs of causal flows. Several of the results have been verified to be biologically significant.

Multimodal fusion benefits disease diagnosis by providing a more comprehensive perspective. Developing algorithms is challenging due to data heterogeneity and the complex within- and between-modality associations. Deep-network-based data-fusion models have been developed to capture the complex associations and the performance in diagnosis has been improved accordingly. Moving beyond diagnosis prediction, evaluation of disease mechanisms is critically important for biomedical research. Deep-network-based data-fusion models, however, are difficult to interpret, bringing about difficulties for studying biological mechanisms. In this work, we develop an interpretable multimodal fusion model, namely gCAM-CCL, which can perform automated diagnosis and result interpretation simultaneously. The gCAM-CCL model can generate interpretable activation maps, which quantify pixel-level contributions of the input features. This is achieved by combining intermediate feature maps using gradient-based weights. Moreover, the estimated activation maps are class-specific, and the captured cross-data associations are interest/label related, which further facilitates class-specific analysis and biological mechanism analysis. We validate the gCAM-CCL model on a brain imaging-genetic study, and show gCAM-CCL's performed well for both classification and mechanism analysis. Mechanism analysis suggests that during task-fMRI scans, several object recognition related regions of interests (ROIs) are first activated and then several downstream encoding ROIs get involved. Results also suggest that the higher cognition performing group may have stronger neurotransmission signaling while the lower cognition performing group may have problem in brain/neuron development, resulting from genetic variations.

In recent years, a comprehensive study of multi-view datasets (e.g., multi-omics and imaging scans) has been a focus and forefront in biomedical research. State-of-the-art biomedical technologies are enabling us to collect multi-view biomedical datasets for the study of complex diseases. While all the views of data tend to explore complementary information of a disease, multi-view data analysis with complex interactions is challenging for a deeper and holistic understanding of biological systems. In this paper, we propose a novel generalized kernel machine approach to identify higher-order composite effects in multi-view biomedical datasets. This generalized semi-parametric (a mixed-effect linear model) approach includes the marginal and joint Hadamard product of features from different views of data. The proposed kernel machine approach considers multi-view data as predictor variables to allow more thorough and comprehensive modeling of a complex trait. The proposed method can be applied to the study of any disease model, where multi-view datasets are available. We applied our approach to both synthesized datasets and real multi-view datasets from adolescence brain development and osteoporosis study, including an imaging scan dataset and five omics datasets. Our experiments demonstrate that the proposed method can effectively identify higher-order composite effects and suggest that corresponding features (genes, region of interests, and chemical taxonomies) function in a concerted effort. The robust Chinese remainder theorem (CRT) has been recently proposed for robustly reconstructing a large nonnegative integer from erroneous remainders. It has found many applications in signal processing, including phase unwrapping and frequency estimation under sub-Nyquist sampling. Motivated by the applications in multidimensional (MD) signal processing, in this paper we propose the MD-CRT and robust MD-CRT for integer vectors. Specifically, by rephrasing the abstract CRT for rings in number-theoretic terms, we first derive the MD-CRT for integer vectors with respect to a general set of integer matrix moduli, which provides an algorithm to uniquely reconstruct an integer vector from its remainders, if it is in the fundamental parallelepiped of the lattice generated by a least common right multiple of all the moduli. For some special forms of moduli, we present explicit reconstruction formulae. Moreover, we derive the robust MD-CRT for integer vectors when the remaining integer matrices of all the moduli left divided by their greatest common left divisor (gcld) are pairwise commutative and coprime. Two different reconstruction algorithms are proposed, and accordingly, two different conditions on the remainder error bound for the reconstruction robustness are obtained, which are related to a quarter of the minimum distance of the lattice generated by the gcld of all the moduli or the Smith normal form of the gcld.

Human brain development is a complex and dynamic process that is affected by several factors such as genetics, sex hormones, and environmental changes. A number of recent studies on brain development have examined functional connectivity (FC) defined by the temporal correlation between time series of different brain regions. We propose to add the directional flow of information during brain maturation. To do so, we extract effective connectivity (EC) through Granger causality (GC) for two different groups of subjects, i.e., children and young adults. The motivation is that the inclusion of causal interaction may further discriminate brain connections between two age groups and help to discover new connections between brain regions. The contributions of this study are threefold. First, there has been a lack of attention to EC-based feature extraction in the context of brain development. To this end, we propose a new kernel-based GC (KGC) method to learn nonlinearity of complex brain network, where a reduced Sine hyperbolic polynomial (RSP) neural network was used as our proposed learner. Second, we used causality values as the weight for the directional connectivity between brain regions. Our findings indicated that the strength of connections was significantly higher in young adults relative to children. In addition, our new EC-based feature outperformed FC-based analysis from Philadelphia neurocohort (PNC) study with better discrimination of the different age groups. Moreover, the fusion of these two sets of features (FC + EC) improved brain age prediction accuracy by more than 4%, indicating that they should be used together for brain development studies., Comment: 10 pages

Communication between robots and the server is a major problem for cloud robotic systems. In this paper, we address the problem caused by data loss during such communications, and propose an efficient buffering algorithm, called AFR, to solve the problem. We model the problem into an optimization problem to maximize the received Quantity of Information (QoI). Our AFR algorithm is formally proved to achieve near-optimal QoI, which has a lower bound that is a constant multiple of the unrealizable optimal QoI. We implement our AFR algorithm in ROS without changing the interface or API for the applications. Our experiments on two cloud robot applications show that our AFR algorithm can efficiently and effectively reduce the impact of data loss. For the remote mapping application, the RMSE caused by data loss can be reduced by about 20%. For the remote tracking application, the probability of tracking failure caused by data loss can be reduced from about 40%-60% to under 10%. Objective: Longitudinal neuroimaging studies have demonstrated that adolescence is the crucial developmental epoch of continued brain growth and change. A large number of researchers dedicate to uncovering the mechanisms about brain maturity during adolescence. Motivated by both achievement in graph signal processing and recent evidence that some brain areas act as hubs connecting functionally specialized systems, we proposed an approach to detect these regions from spectral analysis perspective. In particular, as human brain undergoes substantial development throughout adolescence, we addressed the challenge by evaluating the functional network difference among age groups from functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) observations. Methods: We treated these observations as graph signals defined on the parcellated functional brain regions and applied graph Laplacian learning based Fourier Transform (GLFT) to transform the original graph signals into frequency domain. Eigen-analysis was conducted afterwards to study the behavior of the corresponding brain regions, which enables the characterization of brain maturation. Result: We first evaluated our method on the synthetic data and further applied the method to resting and task state fMRI imaging data from Philadelphia Neurodevelopmental Cohort (PNC) dataset, comprised of normally developing adolescents from 8 to 22. The model provided a highest accuracy of 95.69% in distinguishing different adolescence stages. Conclusion: We detected 13 hubs from resting state fMRI and 16 hubs from task state fMRI that are highly related to brain maturation process. The study of healthy brain development helps to better understand the brain transformation and brain connectivity patterns which happen during childhood to adulthood. This study presents a sparse machine learning solution across whole-brain functional connectivity (FC) measures of three sets of data, derived from resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) and task fMRI data, including a working memory n-back task (nb-fMRI) and an emotion identification task (em-fMRI). These multi-modal image data are collected on a sample of adolescents from the Philadelphia Neurodevelopmental Cohort (PNC) for the prediction of brain ages. Due to extremely large variable-to-instance ratio of PNC data, a high dimensional matrix with several irrelevant and highly correlated features is generated and hence a pattern learning approach is necessary to extract significant features. We propose a sparse learner based on the residual errors along the estimation of an inverse problem for the extreme learning machine (ELM) neural network. The purpose of the approach is to overcome the overlearning problem through pruning of several redundant features and their corresponding output weights. The proposed multimodal sparse ELM classifier based on residual errors (RES-ELM) is highly competitive in terms of the classification accuracy compared to its counterparts such as conventional ELM, and sparse Bayesian learning ELM.

Multi-modal brain functional connectivity (FC) data have shown great potential for providing insights into individual variations in behavioral and cognitive traits. The joint learning of multi-modal imaging data can utilize the intrinsic association, and thus can boost the learning performance. Although several multi-task based learning models have already been proposed by viewing the feature learning on each modality as one task, most of them ignore the geometric structure information inherent in the modalities, which may play an important role in extracting discriminative features. In this paper, we propose a new manifold regularized multi-task learning model by simultaneously considering between-subject and between-modality relationships. Besides employing a group-sparsity regularizer to jointly select a few common features across multiple tasks (modalities), we design a novel manifold regularizer to preserve the structure information both within and between modalities in our model. This will make our model more adaptive for realistic data analysis. Our model is then validated on the Philadelphia Neurodevelopmental Cohort dataset, where we regard our modalities as functional MRI (fMRI) data collected under two paradigms. Specifically, we conduct experimental studies on fMRI based FC network data in two task conditions for intelligence quotient (IQ) prediction. The results demonstrate that our proposed model can not only achieve improved prediction performance, but also yield a set of IQ-relevant biomarkers.

To explain individual differences in development, behavior, and cognition, most previous studies focused on projecting resting-state functional MRI (fMRI) based functional connectivity (FC) data into a low-dimensional space via linear dimensionality reduction techniques, followed by executing analysis operations. However, linear dimensionality analysis techniques may fail to capture nonlinearity of brain neuroactivity. Moreover, besides resting-state FC, FC based on task fMRI can be expected to provide complementary information. Motivated by these considerations, we nonlinearly fuse resting-state and task-based FC networks (FCNs) to seek a better representation in this paper. We propose a framework based on alternating diffusion map (ADM), which extracts geometry-preserving low-dimensional embeddings that successfully parameterize the intrinsic variables driving the phenomenon of interest. Specifically, we first separately build resting-state and task-based FCNs by symmetric positive definite matrices using sparse inverse covariance estimation for each subject, and then utilize the ADM to fuse them in order to extract significant low-dimensional embeddings, which are used as fingerprints to identify individuals. The proposed framework is validated on the Philadelphia Neurodevelopmental Cohort data, where we conduct extensive experimental study on resting-state and fractal $n$-back task fMRI for the classification of intelligence quotient (IQ). The fusion of resting-state and $n$-back task fMRI by the proposed framework achieves better classification accuracy than any single fMRI, and the proposed framework is shown to outperform several other data fusion methods. To our knowledge, this paper is the first to demonstrate a successful extension of the ADM to fuse resting-state and task-based fMRI data for accurate prediction of IQ.

We take an image science perspective on the problem of determining brain network connectivity given functional activity. But adapting the concept of image resolution to this problem, we provide a new perspective on network partitioning for individual brain parcellation. The typical goal here is to determine densely-interconnected subnetworks within a larger network by choosing the best edges to cut. We instead define these subnetworks as resolution cells, where highly-correlated activity within the cells makes edge weights difficult to determine from the data. Subdividing the resolution estimates into disjoint resolution cells via clustering yields a new variation, and new perspective, on spectral clustering. This provides insight and strategies for open questions such as the selection of model order and the optimal choice of preprocessing steps for functional imaging data. The approach is demonstrated using functional imaging data, where we find the proposed approach produces parcellations which are more predictive across multiple scans versus conventional methods, as well as versus alternative forms of spectral clustering.

Inter-process communication (IPC) is one of the core functions of modern robotics middleware. We propose an efficient IPC technique called TZC (Towards Zero-Copy). As a core component of TZC, we design a novel algorithm called partial serialization. Our formulation can generate messages that can be divided into two parts. During message transmission, one part is transmitted through a socket and the other part uses shared memory. The part within shared memory is never copied or serialized during its lifetime. We have integrated TZC with ROS and ROS2 and find that TZC can be easily combined with current open-source platforms. By using TZC, the overhead of IPC remains constant when the message size grows. In particular, when the message size is 4MB (less than the size of a full HD image), TZC can reduce the overhead of ROS IPC from tens of milliseconds to hundreds of microseconds and can reduce the overhead of ROS2 IPC from hundreds of milliseconds to less than 1 millisecond. We also demonstrate the benefits of TZC by integrating with TurtleBot2 that are used in autonomous driving scenarios. We show that by using TZC, the braking distance can be shortened by 16% than ROS.

In this paper, a natural generalization of KMY model is proposed for the evaporation of charged black holes. Within the proposed model, the back reaction of Hawking radiation is considered. More specifically, we consider the equation $G_{\mu\nu} = 8\pi \langle T_{\mu\nu}\rangle$, in which the matter content $\langle T_{\mu\nu}\rangle$ is assumed spherically symmetric. With this equation of motion, the asymptotic behavior of the model is analyzed. Two kinds of matter contents are taken into consideration in this paper. In the first case (the thin-shell model), the infalling matter is simulated by a null-like charged sphere collapsing into its center. In the second case, we consider a continuous distribution of spherical symmetric infalling null-like charged matter. It is simulated by taking the continuous limit of many co-centric spheres collapsing into the center. We find that in the thin-shell case, an event horizon forms and the shell passes through the horizon before becoming extremal, provided that it is not initially near-extremal. In the case of continuous matter distribution, we consider explicitly an extremal center covered by neutral infalling matter and find that the event horizon also forms. The black hole itself will become near-extremal eventually, leaving possibly a non-electromagnetic energy residue less than the order of $\ell_{p}^{4}/e_{0}^{3}$. In this study, we tested the interaction effect of multimodal datasets using a novel method called the kernel method for detecting higher order interactions among biologically relevant mulit-view data. Using a semiparametric method on a reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS), we used a standard mixed-effects linear model and derived a score-based variance component statistic that tests for higher order interactions between multi-view data. The proposed method offers an intangible framework for the identification of higher order interaction effects (e.g., three way interaction) between genetics, brain imaging, and epigenetic data. Extensive numerical simulation studies were first conducted to evaluate the performance of this method. Finally, this method was evaluated using data from the Mind Clinical Imaging Consortium (MCIC) including single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans, and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) methylation data, respectfully, in schizophrenia patients and healthy controls. We treated each gene-derived SNPs, region of interest (ROI) and gene-derived DNA methylation as a single testing unit, which are combined into triplets for evaluation. In addition, cardiovascular disease risk factors such as age, gender, and body mass index were assessed as covariates on hippocampal volume and compared between triplets. Our method identified $13$-triplets ($p$-values $\leq 0.001$) that included $6$ gene-derived SNPs, $10$ ROIs, and $6$ gene-derived DNA methylations that correlated with changes in hippocampal volume, suggesting that these triplets may be important in explaining schizophrenia-related neurodegeneration. With strong evidence ($p$-values $\leq 0.000001$), the triplet ({\bf MAGI2, CRBLCrus1.L, FBXO28}) has the potential to distinguish schizophrenia patients from the healthy control variations.

Reducing the number of false discoveries is presently one of the most pressing issues in the life sciences. It is of especially great importance for many applications in neuroimaging and genomics, where datasets are typically high-dimensional, which means that the number of explanatory variables exceeds the sample size. The false discovery rate (FDR) is a criterion that can be employed to address that issue. Thus it has gained great popularity as a tool for testing multiple hypotheses. Canonical correlation analysis (CCA) is a statistical technique that is used to make sense of the cross-correlation of two sets of measurements collected on the same set of samples (e.g., brain imaging and genomic data for the same mental illness patients), and sparse CCA extends the classical method to high-dimensional settings. Here we propose a way of applying the FDR concept to sparse CCA, and a method to control the FDR. The proposed FDR correction directly influences the sparsity of the solution, adapting it to the unknown true sparsity level. Theoretical derivation as well as simulation studies show that our procedure indeed keeps the FDR of the canonical vectors below a user-specified target level. We apply the proposed method to an imaging genomics dataset from the Philadelphia Neurodevelopmental Cohort. Many unsupervised kernel methods rely on the estimation of the kernel covariance operator (kernel CO) or kernel cross-covariance operator (kernel CCO). Both kernel CO and kernel CCO are sensitive to contaminated data, even when bounded positive definite kernels are used. To the best of our knowledge, there are few well-founded robust kernel methods for statistical unsupervised learning. In addition, while the influence function (IF) of an estimator can characterize its robustness, asymptotic properties and standard error, the IF of a standard kernel canonical correlation analysis (standard kernel CCA) has not been derived yet. To fill this gap, we first propose a robust kernel covariance operator (robust kernel CO) and a robust kernel cross-covariance operator (robust kernel CCO) based on a generalized loss function instead of the quadratic loss function. Second, we derive the IF for robust kernel CCO and standard kernel CCA. Using the IF of the standard kernel CCA, we can detect influential observations from two sets of data. Finally, we propose a method based on the robust kernel CO and the robust kernel CCO, called {\bf robust kernel CCA}, which is less sensitive to noise than the standard kernel CCA. The introduced principles can also be applied to many other kernel methods involving kernel CO or kernel CCO. Our experiments on synthesized data and imaging genetics analysis demonstrate that the proposed IF of standard kernel CCA can identify outliers. Kernel and Multiple Kernel Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA) are employed to classify schizophrenic and healthy patients based on their SNPs, DNA Methylation and fMRI data. Kernel and Multiple Kernel CCA are popular methods for finding nonlinear correlations between high-dimensional datasets. Data was gathered from 183 patients, 79 with schizophrenia and 104 healthy controls. Kernel and Multiple Kernel CCA represent new avenues for studying schizophrenia, because, to our knowledge, these methods have not been used on these data before. Classification is performed via k-means clustering on the kernel matrix outputs of the Kernel and Multiple Kernel CCA algorithm. Accuracies of the Kernel and Multiple Kernel CCA classification are compared to that of the regularized linear CCA algorithm classification, and are found to be significantly more accurate. In genome-wide interaction studies, to detect gene-gene interactions, most methods are divided into two folds: single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) based and gene-based methods. Basically, the methods based on the gene are more effective than the methods based on a single SNP. Recent years, while the kernel canonical correlation analysis (Classical kernel CCA) based U statistic (KCCU) has proposed to detect the nonlinear relationship between genes. To estimate the variance in KCCU, they have used resampling based methods which are highly computationally intensive. In addition, classical kernel CCA is not robust to contaminated data. We, therefore, first discuss robust kernel mean element, the robust kernel covariance, and cross-covariance operators. Second, we propose a method based on influence function to estimate the variance of the KCCU. Third, we propose a nonparametric robust KCCU method based on robust kernel CCA, which is designed for contaminated data and less sensitive to noise than classical kernel CCA. Finally, we investigate the proposed methods to synthesized data and imaging genetic data set. Imaging genetic research has essentially focused on discovering unique and co-association effects, but typically ignoring to identify outliers or atypical objects in genetic as well as non-genetics variables. Identifying significant outliers is an essential and challenging issue for imaging genetics and multiple sources data analysis. Therefore, we need to examine for transcription errors of identified outliers. First, we address the influence function (IF) of kernel mean element, kernel covariance operator, kernel cross-covariance operator, kernel canonical correlation analysis (kernel CCA) and multiple kernel CCA. Second, we propose an IF of multiple kernel CCA, which can be applied for more than two datasets. Third, we propose a visualization method to detect influential observations of multiple sources of data based on the IF of kernel CCA and multiple kernel CCA. Finally, the proposed methods are capable of analyzing outliers of subjects usually found in biomedical applications, in which the number of dimension is large. To examine the outliers, we use the stem-and-leaf display. We present a new scheme for measuring the differential phase in dual atom interferometers. The magnetic field is modulated in one interferometer, and the differential phase can be extracted without measuring the amplitude of the magnetic field by combining the ellipse and linear fitting methods. The gravity gradient measurements are discussed based on dual atom interferometers. Numerical simulation shows that the systematic error of the differential phase measurement is largely decreased when the duration of the magnetic field is symmetrically modulated. To the best of our knowledge, there are no general well-founded robust methods for statistical unsupervised learning. Third, using this influence function, we propose a visualization method to detect influential observations from two sets of data. Finally, we propose a method based on robust kernel CO and robust kernel CCO, called robust kernel CCA, which is designed for contaminated data and less sensitive to noise than classical kernel CCA. The principles we describe also apply to many kernel methods which must deal with the issue of kernel CO or kernel CCO. Experiments on synthesized and imaging genetics analysis demonstrate that the proposed visualization and robust kernel CCA can be applied effectively to both ideal data and contaminated data. The robust methods show the superior performance over the state-of-the-art methods.
