Stacking faults (SF) are important structural defects that play an essential role in the deformation of engineering alloys. However, direct observation of stacking faults at the atomic scale can be challenging. Here, we use the analytical field ion microscopy (aFIM), including density-functional theory informed contrast estimation, to image local elemental segregation at SFs in a creep-deformed solid solution single crystal alloy of Ni-2 at.% W. The segregated atoms are imaged brightly, and time-of-flight spectrometry allows for their identification as W. We also provide the first quantitative analysis of trajectory aberration, with a deviation of approximately 0.4 nm, explaining why atom probe tomography could not resolve these segregations. Atomistic simulations of substitutional W atoms at an edge dislocation in fcc Ni using an analytic bond-order potential indicate that the experimentally observed segregation is due to the energetic preference of W for the center of the stacking fault, contrasting with e.g., Re segregating to partial dislocations. Solute segregation to SF can hinder dislocation motion, increasing the strength of Ni-based superalloys. Yet direct substitution of Re by W envisaged to lower superalloys' costs, requires extra consideration in alloy design since these two solutes do not have comparable interactions with structural defects during deformation.

We have recently proposed an atom probe design based on a femtosecond time-resolved pump-probe setup. This setup unlocks the limitation of voltage pulsed mode atom probe thanks to the occurrence of local photoconductive switching effect . In this paper, we have used a numerical model to simulate the field evaporation process triggered by the synchronous two pulses. In this review we present an overview of the current atom probe tomography spatial data reconstruction paradigm, and explore some of potential routes to improve the current methodology in order to yield a more accurate representation of nanoscale microstructure. Many of these potential improvement methods are directly tied to extensive application of advanced numerical methods, which are also very briefly reviewed. We have described effects resulting from the application of the standard model and then introduced several potential improvements, first in the far field, and, second, in the near field. The issues encountered in both cases are quite different but ultimately they combine to determine the spatial resolution of the technique., Comment: 42 pages

A detailed interface study was conducted on a Fe/MgO/Fe system using laser assisted 3D atom probe. It exhibits an additional oxide formation at the second interface of the multilayer structure independent of laser wavelength, laser fluence and the thickness of the tunnel barrier. We have shown with the help of simulation that this phenomena is caused by the field evaporation of two layers having two different evaporation

A new 3DAP reconstruction procedure is proposed that accounts for the evaporation field of a secondary phase. It applies the existing cluster selection software to identify the atoms of the second phase and, subsequently, an iterative algorithm to homogenise the volume laterally. This Procedure, easily implementable on existing reconstruction software, has been applied successfully on simulated and real 3DAP analyses.
