Magnetic transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have been of particular interest due to their unique magnetic properties and layered structure that can be promising for a wide range of spintronic applications. One of the most exciting compounds in this family of magnets is chromium telluride, Cr$_{1+x}$Te$_2$, which has shown rich magnetic phases with varied Cr concentrations. An emergent antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering has been found in Cr$_{1.25}$Te$_2$ (equivalently, Cr$_{5}$Te$_8$), which is induced by intercalating 0.25 Cr atom per unit cell within the van der Waals (vdW) gaps of CrTe$_2$. In this work, we report an increased N\'eel Temperature ($T_\mathrm{N}$) of the AFM phase in Cr$_{1+x}$Te$_2$ by slightly reducing the concentration of Cr intercalants. Moreover, the intercalated Cr atoms form a metastable 2$\times$2 supercell structure that can be manipulated by electron beam irradiation. In this paper we create a definition for prime gaps in the Gaussian integers using a boxcar metric. From this we used numerical methods to derive an asymptotic upper bound for the gaps in this scenario, namely O(log^2|p_{n}|).

We model and investigate the collective nonlinear optical response of an ensemble of two-level emitters that are weakly coupled to a single-mode waveguide. Our approach generalizes the insight that photon-photon correlations in the light scattered by a single two-level emitter result from two-photon interference to the case of many emitters. Using our model, we study different configurations for probing the nonlinear response of the ensemble, e.g., through the waveguide or via external illumination, and derive analytical expressions for the second-order quantum coherence function, $g^{(2)}(\tau)$, as well as for the squeezing spectrum of the output light in the waveguide, $S_\theta(\omega)$. For the transmission of resonant guided light, we recover the same predictions as previously made with far more involved theoretical models when analyzing experimental results regarding $g^{(2)}(\tau)$ (Prasad et al. [1]) and $S_\theta(\omega)$ (Hinney et al. [2]). We also study the transmission of light that is detuned from the transition of the two-level emitter, a situation that we recently studied experimentally (Cordier et al. [3]). Our model predictions show how the collectively enhanced nonlinear response of weakly coupled emitters can be harnessed to generate non-classical states of light using ensembles ranging from a few to many emitters.

Semiconductor quantum dots in microcavities are an excellent platform for the efficient generation of indistinguishable single photons. However, their use in a wide range of quantum technologies requires their controlled fabrication and integration in compact closed-cycle cryocoolers, with a key challenge being the efficient and stable extraction of the single photons into a single-mode fiber. Here we report on a novel method for fiber-pigtailing of deterministically fabricated single-photon sources. Our technique allows for nanometer-scale alignment accuracy between the source and a fiber, alignment that persists all the way from room temperature to 2.4 K. We demonstrate high performance of the device under near-resonant optical excitation with g$^{(2)}$(0) = 1.3 %, a photon indistinguishability of 97.5 % and a fibered brightness of 20.8 %. We show that the indistinguishability and single-photon rate are stable for over ten hours of continuous operation in a single cooldown. We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel detection method that significantly improves the precision of real-time measurement of the three-dimensional displacement of a levitated dipolar scatterer. Our technique relies on the spatial mode decomposition of the light scattered by the levitated object, allowing us to simultaneously and selectively extract the position information of all translational degrees of freedom with minimal losses. To this end, we collect all the light back-scattered from a levitated nanoparticle using a parabolic mirror and couple it into a spatial mode sorter. The sorter effectively demultiplexes the information content of the scattered electric field, resulting in each of the nanoparticle's translational degrees of freedom being selectively encoded in the amplitude of orthogonal optical modes. We report measurement efficiencies of ${(\eta_{^{\mathrm{tot}}}^{_{x}}, \eta_{^{\mathrm{tot}}}^{_{y}}, \eta_{^{\mathrm{tot}}}^{_{z}}) = (0.14, 0.16, 0.32)}$ $>$ 1/9, which should enable the 3D motional quantum ground state of a levitated optomechanical system. Further, we believe this technique opens up the possibility to implement coherent feedback control of a levitated nanoparticle.

Here we report the detection of dust depletion in a misaligned inner disk around UX Tau A using JWST MIRI spectra. Mid-infrared (MIR) continuum "seesaw" variability was detected in this disk by Spitzer and attributed to variable shadows cast on the outer disk by the inner disk. The JWST MIRI spectrum of UX Tau A also shows seesaw variability, but with a significant decrease of emission shortwards of 10 micron to nearly photospheric levels. We argue that UX Tau A's MIR continuum variability is due to depletion of dust in a misaligned inner disk. We speculate that this dust depletion occurs because the inner disk is misaligned from the outer disk, which can disrupt the replenishment of the inner disk from the outer disk. Using contemporaneous measurements of the mass accretion rate of UX Tau A and estimating the amount of dust necessary to produce the MIR excess in the Spitzer observations, we estimate a minimum dust depletion timescale of ~0.1 yr. These observations show that we can indirectly detect the signatures of misaligned inner disks through MIR continuum variability and that in some cases the inner disk may be significantly depleted of dust and become optically thin., Comment: accepted to ApJL

We report on the realization and characterization of a novel magic-wavelength nanofiber-based two-color optical dipole trap that allows us to generate a periodic one-dimensional array of trapping sites with a spacing significantly smaller than half of the resonant wavelength of the cesium D2-line. To this end, we launch a blue-detuned partial standing wave and two red-detuned light fields through the nanofiber. We demonstrate the trapping of atoms in the array and characterize the resulting trap configuration by measuring the trap frequencies in three directions and observe good agreement with theoretical predictions. The implementation of this nanofiber-based optical interface with magic trapping wavelengths and sub-$\lambda/2$ spacing is an important step towards the exploration of novel collective radiative effects such as selective radiance in 1D atomic arrays., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Efficiently exciting and controlling phonons in diamond nanoresonators represents a fundamental challenge for quantum applications. Here, we theoretically demonstrate the possibility to excite mechanical modes within a double-hybrid-cavity (DHC), formed by adjoining to a diamond cavity a second cavity, made of aluminum nitride. The latter is piezoelectric and serves as a microwave-to-phonon transducer, activating mechanical modes in the entire DHC. We show the process to match the cavities phononic properties, making them work coordinately in the DHC and obtaining a well confined mode. In the diamond part of the cavity, this mode replicates the fundamental mode of the individual diamond cavity, showing that the piezoelectric transducer doesn't alter the diamond individual fundamental mode. In the piezoelectric part, the strong confinement of stress and electric field results in a high piezoelectric coupling rate, demonstrating the effectiveness of a phononic cavity as a transducer. The study is contextualized in the framework of a quantum networking application, where the DHC serves as a spin qubit, exploiting the spin-mechanical coupling within diamond color centers., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

A renewed interest in upright therapy is currently driven by the availability of upright positioning and imaging systems. Aside from reduced cost, upright positioning possibly provides clinical advantages. The comparison between upright and supine particle therapy treatments can be biased through multiple variables, such as differences in the target contouring on the two CTs. We present a method for upright and supine CT registration and structures propagation, and the investigation of an AI-based contouring tool for upright images. Six paired 4DCTs from Proton Therapy Collaboration Group registry were available from the Northwestern Medicine Proton Centre. Deformable image registration (DIR) is challenged by the different patient anatomy between postures, causing artefacts in the warped images. To achieve high quality contour propagation, we propose the construction of a region of interest covering the ribcage volume to overcome this problem. As no target contour ground truth was available, the registration quality analysis (QA) was performed on lung structures, for which dice score coefficient (DSC) and average Hausdorff distance (AHD) is reported. The TotalSegmentator tool, trained on supine dataset, was applied on upright images, verified against lung structures and used as additional comparison for contour propagation. The TotalSegmentator QA results in a maximum AHD of 2mm and a minimum DSC of 0.94. An average AHD of 1.5mm and 1.6mm, and an average DSC of 0.95 and 0.94 were obtained comparing the propagated volumes to manually contoured and AI structures, respectively. All AHD values are smaller than the CT slice distances. The developed framework allows for target propagation between upright and supine images, defining the first step to compare upright and supine therapy of thoracic patients and enabling the application of image fusion techniques in the upright therapy field.

One of the most innovative possibilities offered by oxides is the use of heat currents for computational purposes. Towards this goal, phase-change oxides, including ferroelectrics, ferromagnets and related materials, could reproduce sources, logic units and memories used in current and future computing schemes.

Similarity estimation is essential for many game AI applications, from the procedural generation of distinct assets to automated exploration with game-playing agents. While similarity metrics often substitute human evaluation, their alignment with our judgement is unclear. Consequently, the result of their application can fail human expectations, leading to e.g. unappreciated content or unbelievable agent behaviour. We alleviate this gap through a multi-factorial study of two tile-based games in two representations, where participants (N=456) judged the similarity of level triplets. Based on this data, we construct domain-specific perceptual spaces, encoding similarity-relevant attributes. We compare 12 metrics to these spaces and evaluate their approximation quality through several quantitative lenses. Moreover, we conduct a qualitative labelling study to identify the features underlying the human similarity judgement in this popular genre. In this study, we investigate excitonic properties of epitaxially grown WS2, which is of particular interest for various applications due to its potential for upscaling to wafer sized structures. Understanding the effect of the dielectric environment due to changing layer numbers and multi-material heterostructures on the optical properties is crucial for tailoring device properties. Monochromated electron energy loss spectroscopy in a scanning transmission electron microscope is employed to characterize the excitonic spectrum of WS2 on graphene grown by metal organic chemical vapor deposition. This technique provides the required spatial resolution at the nanometer scale in combination with high quality spectra. To complement the experimental results, theoretical investigations using density functional theory and applying the Bethe-Salpeter equations are conducted. We find that by transitioning from mono- to bi- to multilayers of WS2 the spectra show redshifts for both, the K-valley excitons at about 2.0 and 2.4 eV as well as excitonic features of higher energies. The latter features originate from so called band nesting of transitions between the Gamma- and K-point. In summary, this study provides valuable insights into the excitonic properties of WS2 in different layer configurations and environments, which are realistically needed for future device fabrication and property tuning. Finally, we can show that nanometer scale electron spectroscopy supported by careful theoretical modelling can successfully link atomic structure and optical properties, such as exciton shifts, in non-idealized complex material systems like multilayer 2D heterostructures., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have received a lot of interest over the past decade. Especially van der Waals (vdW) 2D materials, such as transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), and their heterostructures exhibit semiconducting properties that make them highly suitable for novel device applications. Controllable mixing and matching of the 2D materials with different properties and a precise control of the in-plane twist angle in these heterostructures are essential to achieve superior properties and need to be established through large-scale device fabrication. To gain fundamental insight into the control of these twist angles, 2D heterostructures of tungsten disulfide (WS2) and graphene grown by bottom-up synthesis via metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) are investigated using a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM). Specifically, the combination of conventional high-resolution imaging with scanning nano beam diffraction (SNBD) using advanced 4D STEM techniques is used to analyze moir\'e structures. The latter technique is used to reveal the epitaxial alignment within the WS2/Gr heterostructure, showing a direct influence of the underlying graphene layers on the moir\'e formation in the subsequent WS2 layers. Many popular piecewise regression models rely on minimizing a cost function on the model fit with a linear penalty on the number of segments. However, this penalty does not take into account varying complexities of the model functions on the segments potentially leading to overfitting when models with varying complexities, such as polynomials of different degrees, are used. In this work, we enhance on this approach by instead using a penalty on the sum of the degrees of freedom over all segments, called degrees-of-freedom penalized piecewise regression (DofPPR). We show that the solutions of the resulting minimization problem are unique for almost all input data in a least squares setting. We develop a fast algorithm which does not only compute a minimizer but also determines an optimal hyperparameter -- in the sense of rolling cross validation with the one standard error rule -- exactly. This eliminates manual hyperparameter selection. Our method supports optional user parameters for incorporating domain knowledge. We provide an open-source Python/Rust code for the piecewise polynomial least squares case which can be extended to further models. We demonstrate the practical utility through a simulation study and by applications to real data. High spin Chern-number insulators (HSCI) have emerged as a novel 2D topological phase of condensed matter that is beyond the classification of topological quantum chemistry. In this work, we report the observation of a semimetallic Sb monolayer carrying the same band topology as HSCI with a spin Chern number equal to 2. Our calculations further indicate a moderate lattice strain can make Sb monolayer an insulator or a semimetal with a tunable spin Chern number from 0 to 3. The results suggest strained Sb monolayers as a promising platform for exploring exotic properties of the HSCI topological matter., Comment: 4 figures

Two grapes irradiated inside a microwave (MW) oven typically produce a series of sparks and can ignite a violent plasma. The underlying cause of the plasma has been attributed to the formation of morphological-dependent resonances (MDRs) in the aqueous dielectric dimers that lead to the generation of a strong evanescent MW hotspot between them. Previous experiments have focused on the electric-field component of the field as the driving force behind the plasma ignition. Here we couple an ensemble of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) spins in nanodiamonds (NDs) to the magnetic-field component of the dimer MW field. We demonstrate the efficient coupling of the NV spins to the MW magnetic-field hotspot formed between the grape dimers using Optically Detected Magnetic Resonance (ODMR). The ODMR measurements are performed by coupling NV spins in NDs to the evanescent MW fields of a copper wire. When placing a pair of grapes around the NDs and matching the ND position with the expected magnetic-field hotspot, we see an enhancement in the ODMR contrast by more than a factor of two compared to the measurements without grapes. Using finite-element modelling, we attribute our experimental observation of the field enhancement to the MW hotspot formation between the grape dimers. The present study not only validates previous work on understanding grape-dimer resonator geometries, but it also opens up a new avenue for exploring novel MW resonator designs for quantum technologies.

We report on a study exploring the design of nanoparticles that can enhance their laser refrigeration efficiency for applications in levitated optomechanics. In particular, we developed lanthanide-doped nanocrystals with an inert shell coating and compared their performance with bare nanocrystals. While optically levitated, we studied the refrigeration of both types of nanoparticles while varying the pressure. We found that the core-shell design shows an improvement in the minimum final temperature: a fourth of the core-shell nanoparticles showed a significant cooling compared to almost none of the bare nanoparticles. Furthermore, we measured a core-shell nanoparticle cooling down to a temperature of 147 K at 26 mbar in the underdamped regime. Our study is a first step towards engineering nanoparticles that are suitable for achieving absolute (centre-of-mass and internal temperature) cooling in levitation, opening new avenues for force sensing and the realization of macroscopic quantum superpositions., Comment: Any comments are welcome !

Ultrafast carrier and phonon dynamics at the buried heterointerface of GaP/Si(001) are investigated by means of two-color pump-probe reflectivity measurements. The carrier-induced reflectivity signal exhibits a resonant enhancement at pump-photon energies of 1.4 eV, which can be assigned to an optical transition between electronic interface states. The transient reflectivity is modulated by a coherent oscillation at 2 THz, whose amplitude also becomes maximum at 1.4 eV. The observed resonant behavior of the phonon mode in combination with a characteristic wavelength-dependence of, both, its frequency and initial phase, strongly indicate that the 2-THz mode is a difference-combination mode of a GaP-like and a Si-like phonon at the heterointerface and that this second-order scattering process can be enhanced by a double resonance involving the interfacial electronic states.

The microscopic structure of two amorphous materials with extreme nonlinear optical properties has been studied. One of these materials exhibits second harmonic generation, while another material of similar molecular structure emits brilliant white light if being irradiated with a simple IR laser diode. Structural differences were investigated using X-ray scattering and EXAFS combined with molecular RMC. Transmission electron microscopy and scanning precession electron diffraction were used to understand specific structural differences on all length scales, from mesoscopic down to mutual molecular arrangements. Characteristic differences were found at all scales. Close core-core spacing between {SnS} clusters as well as characteristic cluster distortions appear to be characteristic features of the white light emitting material. In the other material, cores are undistorted and core distances are larger. Tuning the bandgap in ternary III-V semiconductors via modification of the composition or the strain in the material is a major approach for the design of optoelectronic materials. Experimental approaches screening a large range of possible target structures are hampered by the tremendous effort to optimize the material synthesis for every target structure. We present an approach based on density functional theory efficiently capable of providing the bandgap as a function of composition and strain. Using a specific density functional designed for accurate bandgap computation (TB09) together with a band unfolding procedure and special quasirandom structures, we develop a computational protocol efficiently able to predict bandgaps. The approach's accuracy is validated by comparison to selected experimental data. We thus map the phase space of composition and strain (we call this the ``bandgap phase diagram'') for several important III-V compound semiconductors: GaAsP, GaAsN, GaPSb, GaAsSb, GaPBi, and GaAsBi. We show the application of these diagrams for identifying the most promising materials for device design. The term Procedural Content Generation (PCG) refers to the (semi-)automatic generation of game content by algorithmic means, and its methods are becoming increasingly popular in game-oriented research and industry. A special class of these methods, which is commonly known as search-based PCG, treats the given task as an optimisation problem. Such problems are predominantly tackled by evolutionary algorithms. We will demonstrate in this paper that obtaining more information about the defined optimisation problem can substantially improve our understanding of how to approach the generation of content. To do so, we present and discuss three efficient analysis tools, namely diagonal walks, the estimation of high-level properties, as well as problem similarity measures. We discuss the purpose of each of the considered methods in the context of PCG and provide guidelines for the interpretation of the results received. Experiments based on cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) are widely used to study the interaction of a light field with a discrete frequency spectrum and emitters. More recently, the field of waveguide QED has attracted interest due to the strong interaction between propagating photons and emitters that can be obtained in nanophotonic waveguides, where a continuum of frequency modes is allowed. Both cavity and waveguide QED share the common goal of harnessing and deepening the understanding of light-matter coupling. However, they often rely on very different experimental set-ups and theoretical descriptions. Here, we experimentally investigate the transition from cavity to waveguide QED with an ensemble of cold atoms that is coupled to a fiber-ring resonator, which contains a nanofiber section. By varying the length of the resonator from a few meters to several tens of meters, we tailor the spectral density of modes of the resonator while remaining in the strong coupling regime. We demonstrate that for progressively longer resonators, the paradigmatic Rabi oscillations of cavity QED gradually vanish, while non-Markovian features reminiscent of waveguide QED appear.

Characterizing long-range electric fields and built-in potentials in functional materials at nano- to micrometer scales is of supreme importance for optimizing devices. E.g., the functionality of semiconductor heterostructures or battery materials is determined by the electric fields established at interfaces which can also vary spatially. In this study, we propose momentum-resolved four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy (4D-STEM) for the quantification of these potentials and show the optimization steps required to reach quantitative agreement with simulations for the GaAs / AlAs hetero-junction model system. Using STEM the differences in the mean inner potentials (DELTA MIP) of two materials forming an interface and resulting dynamic diffraction effects have to be considered. We show that the measurement quality is significantly improved by precession, energy filtering and a non-zone-axis alignment of the specimen. Complementary simulations yielding a DELTA MIP of 1.3 V confirm that the potential drop due to charge transfer at the intrinsic interface is about 0.1 V, in agreement with experimental and theoretical values found in literture. These results show the feasibility of accurately measuring built-in potentials across hetero-interfaces of real device structures and its promising application for more complex interfaces of other polycrystalline materials on the nanometer scale.

Tapered optical fibers (TOFs) are used in many areas of physics and optical technologies ranging from coupling light into nanophotonic components to optical sensing and amplification to interfacing quantum emitters. Here, we study the fundamental torsional mechanical mode of the nanofiber-waist of a TOF using laser light. We find that this oscillator features a quality factor of up to $10^7$ and a $Qf$ product of 1 THz. We damp the thermal motion from room temperature to 28(7) mK by means of active feedback. Our results might enable new types of fiber-based sensors and lay the foundation for a novel hybrid quantum optomechanical platform.

Strong coupling between a single resonator mode and a single quantum emitter is key to a plethora of experiments and applications in quantum science and technology and is commonly described by means of the Jaynes-Cummings model. Here, we show that the Jaynes-Cummings model only applies when the cavity does not significantly change the emitter's emission rate into free-space. Most notably, the predictions made by the Jaynes-Cummings model become increasingly wrong when approaching the ideal emitter-resonator systems with no free-space decay channels. We present a Hamiltonian that provides, within the validity range of the rotating wave approximation, a correct theoretical description that applies to all regimes. As minimizing the coupling to free-space modes is paramount for many cavity-based applications, a correct description of strong light-matter interaction is therefore crucial for developing and optimizing quantum protocols., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

Structured waves are ubiquitous for all areas of wave physics, both classical and quantum, where the wavefields are inhomogeneous and cannot be approximated by a single plane wave. Even the interference of two plane waves, or a single inhomogeneous (evanescent) wave, provides a number of nontrivial phenomena and additional functionalities as compared to a single plane wave. Complex wavefields with inhomogeneities in the amplitude, phase, and polarization, including topological structures and singularities, underpin modern nanooptics and photonics, yet they are equally important, e.g., for quantum matter waves, acoustics, water waves, etc. Structured waves are crucial in optical and electron microscopy, wave propagation and scattering, imaging, communications, quantum optics, topological and non-Hermitian wave systems, quantum condensed-matter systems, optomechanics, plasmonics and metamaterials, optical and acoustic manipulation, and so forth. Our current sampling of the near-Earth space environment is wholly insufficient to measure the highly variable processes therein and make predictions on par with lower atmospheric weather. Classical Planck's theory of thermal radiation predicts an upper limit of the heat transfer between two bodies separated by a distance longer than the dominant radiation wavelength (far-field regime). This limit can be overcome when the dimensions of the absorbent bodies are smaller than the dominant wavelength due to hybrid electromagnetic waves, known as surface phonon-polaritons (SPhPs). Here, we experimentally demonstrate that the far-field radiative heat transfer between two non-absorbent bodies can also overcome Planck's limit, by coating them with an absorbent material to form a polaritonic waveguide. This super-Planckian far-field thermal radiation is confirmed by measuring the radiative thermal conductance between two silicon plates coated with silicon dioxide nanolayers. The observed conductance is twice higher than Planck's limit and agrees with the predictions of our model for the SPhP waveguide modes. Our findings could be applied to thermal management in microelectronics and silicon photonics.

We report a local minimum in thermal conductivity in twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) at the angle of 1.08$^\circ$, which corresponds to the 'magic angle' in the transition of several other reported properties. Within the supercell of a moir\'e lattice, different stacking modes generate phonon scattering sites which reduce the thermal conductivity of TBG. The thermal magic angle arises from the competition between the delocalization of atomic vibrational amplitudes and stresses on one hand, and the increased AA stacking density on the other hand. The former effect weakens the scattering strength of a single scatterer while the latter one increases the density of scatterers. The combination of these two effects eventually leads to the apparition of the highlighted irregularity in heat conduction. Controlling the photon statistics of light is paramount for quantum science and technologies. Recently, we demonstrated that transmitting resonant laser light past an ensemble of two-level emitters can result in a stream of single photons or excess photon pairs. This transformation is due to quantum interference between the transmitted and incoherently scattered two-photon component. Here, using the dispersion of the atomic medium, we actively control the relative quantum phase between these two components. We thereby realize a tunable two-photon interferometer and observe interference fringes in the normalized photon coincidence rate, varying from antibunching to bunching. Beyond the fundamental insight that the quantum phase between incoherent and coherent light can be tuned and dictates photon statistics, our results lend themselves to the development of novel quantum light sources.

The radiative quantum cascade, i.e. the consecutive emission of photons from a ladder of energy levels, is of fundamental importance in quantum optics. For example, the two-photon cascaded emission from calcium atoms was used in pioneering experiments to test Bell inequalities. In solid-state quantum optics, the radiative biexciton-exciton cascade has proven useful to generate entangled-photon pairs. More recently, correlations and entanglement of microwave photons emitted from a two-photon cascaded process were measured using superconducting circuits. All these experiments rely on the highly non-linear nature of the underlying energy ladder, enabling direct excitation and probing of specific single-photon transitions. Here, we use exciton polaritons to explore the cascaded emission of photons in the regime where individual transitions of the ladder are not resolved, a regime that has not been addressed so far. We excite a polariton quantum cascade by off-resonant laser excitation and probe the emitted luminescence using a combination of spectral filtering and correlation spectroscopy. Remarkably, the measured photon-photon correlations exhibit a strong dependence on the polariton energy, and therefore on the underlying polaritonic interaction strength, with clear signatures from two- and three-body Feshbach resonances. Our experiment establishes photon-cascade correlation spectroscopy as a highly sensitive tool to provide valuable information about the underlying quantum properties of novel semiconductor materials and we predict its usefulness in view of studying many-body quantum phenomena.

The newly synthesized BeN4 monolayer has introduced a novel group of 2D materials called nitrogen-rich 2D materials. In the present study, the anisotropic mechanical and thermal properties of three members of this group, BeN4, MgN4, and PtN4, are investigated. To this end, a machine learning-based interatomic potential (MLIP) is developed on the basis of the moment tensor potential (MTP) method and utilized in classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. Mechanical properties are calculated by extracting the stress-strain curve and thermal properties by non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) method. Acquired results show the anisotropic elastic modulus and lattice thermal conductivity of these materials. Generally, elastic modulus and thermal conductivity in the armchair direction are higher than in the zigzag direction. Also, the elastic anisotropy is almost constant at every temperature for BeN4 and MgN4, while for PtN4, this parameter is decreased by increasing the temperature. The findings of this research are not only evidence of the application of machine learning in MD simulations, but also provide information on the basic anisotropic mechanical and thermal properties of these newly discovered 2D nanomaterials.

Neutral atoms trapped in the evanescent optical potentials of nanotapered optical fibers are a promising platform for developing quantum technologies and exploring fundamental science, such as quantum networks and quantum electrodynamics. Building on the successful advancements with trapped alkali atoms, here we demonstrate a state-insensitive optical dipole trap for strontium-88, an alkaline-earth atom, using the evanescent fields of a nanotapered optical fiber. Leveraging the low laser-cooling temperatures of $\sim\!\!1~\mu$K readily achievable with strontium, we demonstrate trapping in record low trap depths corresponding to $\sim\!\!3~\mu$K. Further, employing a double magic wavelength trapping scheme, we realize state-insensitive trapping on the kilohertz-wide $5s^{2}\;^{1}\!S_{0}-5s5p\;^{3}\!P_{1,|m|=1}$ cooling transition, which we verify by performing near-surface high-resolution spectroscopy of the atomic transition. This allows us to experimentally find and verify the state insensitivity of the trap nearby a theoretically predicted magic wavelength of 435.827(25) nm. Given the non-magnetic ground state and low collisional scattering length of strontium-88, this work also lays the foundation for developing versatile and robust matter-wave atomtronic circuits over nanophotonic waveguides., Comment: 14 pages, 15 figures

Radio frequency data in astronomy enable scientists to analyze astrophysical phenomena. However, these data can be corrupted by radio frequency interference (RFI) that limits the observation of underlying natural processes. In this study, we extend recent developments in deep learning algorithms to astronomy data. We remove RFI from time-frequency spectrograms containing auroral kilometric radiation (AKR), a coherent radio emission originating from the Earth's auroral zones that is used to study astrophysical plasmas. We propose a Denoising Autoencoder for Auroral Radio Emissions (DAARE) trained with synthetic spectrograms to denoise AKR signals collected at the South Pole Station. DAARE achieves 42.2 peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and 0.981 structural similarity (SSIM) on synthesized AKR observations, improving PSNR by 3.9 and SSIM by 0.064 compared to state-of-the-art filtering and denoising networks. Qualitative comparisons demonstrate DAARE's capability to effectively remove RFI from real AKR observations, despite being trained completely on a dataset of simulated AKR. Thermal conductivity is a critical material property in numerous applications, such as those related to thermoelectric devices and heat dissipation. Effectively modulating thermal conductivity has become a great concern in the field of heat conduction. In this study, a quantum strategy is proposed to modulate thermal conductivity by exciting targeted phonons. The results show that the thermal conductivity of graphene can be tailored in the range of 1559 W/m-K (49%) to 4093 W/m-K (128%), compared with the intrinsic value of 3189 W/m-K. A similar trend is also observed for graphene nanoribbons. The results are obtained through both ab initio calculations and molecular dynamics simulations. This brand-new quantum strategy to modulate thermal conductivity paves a way for quantum heat conduction.

The interaction of light with a single two-level emitter is the most fundamental process in quantum optics, and is key to many quantum applications. As a distinctive feature, two photons are never detected simultaneously in the light scattered by the emitter. This is commonly interpreted by saying that a single two-level quantum emitter can only absorb and emit single photons. However, it has been theoretically proposed that the photon anti-correlations can be thought to arise from quantum interference between two possible two-photon scattering amplitudes, which one refers to as coherent and incoherent. This picture is in stark contrast to the aforementioned one, in that it assumes that the atom even has two different mechanisms at its disposal to scatter two photons at the same time. Here, we validate the interference picture by experimentally verifying the 40-year-old conjecture that, by spectrally rejecting only the coherent component of the fluorescence light of a single two-level atom, the remaining light consists of photon pairs that have been simultaneously scattered by the atom. Isolated, micro-meter sized diamonds are grown by micro-wave plasma chemical vapour deposition technique on Si(001) substrates. Each diamond is uniquely identified by markers milled in the Si substrate by Ga+ focused ion beam. The morphology and micrograin structure analysis indicates that the diamonds are icosahedral or bi-crystals. Icosahedral diamonds have higher (up to $\sigma_\mathrm{h}$ = 2.3 GPa), and wider distribution ($\Delta\sigma_\mathrm{h}$ = 4.47 GPa) of hydrostatic stress built up at the microcrystal grain boundaries, compared to the other crystals. The number and spectral shape of SiV- color centers incorporated in the micro-diamonds is analysed, and estimated by means of temperature dependent photoluminescence measurements, and Montecarlo simulations. Waveguide QED with cold atoms provides a potent platform for the study of non-equilibrium, many-body, and open-system quantum dynamics. Even with weak coupling and strong photon loss, the collective enhancement of light-atom interactions leads to strong correlations of photons arising in transmission, as shown in recent experiments. Here we apply an improved mean-field theory based on higher-order cumulant expansions to describe the experimentally relevant, but theoretically elusive, regime of weak coupling and strong driving of large ensembles. We determine the transmitted power, squeezing spectra and the degree of second-order coherence, and systematically check the convergence of the results by comparing expansions that truncate cumulants of few-particle correlations at increasing order. This reveals the important role of many-body and long-range correlations between atoms in steady state. Our approach allows to quantify the trade-off between anti-bunching and output power in previously inaccessible parameter regimes. In recent times, the unique collective transport physics of phonon hydrodynamics motivates theoreticians and experimentalists to explore it in micro- and nanoscale and at elevated temperatures. Graphitic materials have been predicted to facilitate hydrodynamic heat transport with their intrinsically strong normal scattering. However, owing to the experimental difficulties and vague theoretical understanding, the observation of phonon Poiseuille flow in graphitic systems remains challenging. In this study, based on a microscale experimental platform and the pertinent occurrence criterion in anisotropic solids, we demonstrate the phonon Poiseuille flow in a 5 {\mu}m-wide suspended graphite ribbon with purified 13C isotope concentration. Our observation is well supported by our theoretical model based on a kinetic theory with fully first-principles inputs. Thus, this study paves the way for deeper insight into phonon hydrodynamics and cutting-edge heat manipulating applications.

Optical tweezers are tools made of light that enable contactless pushing, trapping, and manipulation of objects ranging from atoms to space light sails. Since the pioneering work by Arthur Ashkin in the 1970s, optical tweezers have evolved into sophisticated instruments and have been employed in a broad range of applications in life sciences, physics, and engineering. These include accurate force and torque measurement at the femtonewton level, microrheology of complex fluids, single micro- and nanoparticle spectroscopy, single-cell analysis, and statistical-physics experiments. As a fundamental physical quantity of thermal phonons, temporal coherence participates in a broad range of thermal and phononic processes, while a clear methodology for the measurement of phonon coherence is still lacking. In this Lettter, we derive a theoretical model for the experimental exploration of phonon coherence based on spectroscopy, which is then validated by comparison with Brillouin light scattering data and direct molecular dynamic simulations of confined modes in nanostructures. The proposed model highlights that confined modes exhibit a pronounced wavelike behavior characterized by a higher ratio of coherence time to lifetime. The dependence of phonon coherence on system size is also demonstrated from spectroscopy data. The proposed theory allows for reassessing data of conventional spectroscopy to yield coherence times, which are essential for the understanding and the estimation of phonon characteristics and heat transport in solids in general., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

While soft quasilocalized vibrational modes are known to populate the low-frequency spectrum of glassy solids, their contribution to thermal properties is still not fully elucidated. We numerically show that, despite their spatially localized nature, these modes are as effective heat carriers as the delocalized ones and can contribute non-negligible to the total thermal conductivity in the low-temperature regime, especially for T < 0.05 Tg where Tg is the glass transition temperature. We further prove that the mutual coherence between the low-frequency quasilocalized modes and other modes explains this high thermal exchange performance. Our finding finally provides a perspective on the thermal transport behaviour of the low-frequency quasilocalized modes in glassy solids.

The most commonly used nonlinear optical process is the conversion of infrared light at 1064nm to green light at 532nm, as performed in common laser pointers. However, more relevant for future applications are nonlinear optical processes that generate a broad spectrum, a so called supercontinuum. A desirable goal is generating a spectrum that covers the whole visible range (400 -900nm), i.e., white light. Nowadays, white-light generation is usually achieved in specially designed photonic fibres requiring high laser intensities. However, in previous studies we showed that amorphous powders of $(PhSn)_4S_6$ cluster-molecules generate white light when they are irradiated by low-intensity near-infrared light. In this study, we use the mid- and far-infrared radiation of a free-electron laser to investigate the same molecules. White-light generation is observed for excitation with wavelength between 8 and 240$\mu$ m. While the emitted radiation shows only slight variations, its intensity strongly depends on the excitation wavelength. We then match the wavelength dependent efficiency with the infrared absorption spectra of the material. This comparison shows: whenever the excitation can introduce molecular vibrations, less white light is generated. For all other wavelengths the excitation interacts mostly with the electron system. This shows that the electron system and the molecular backbone are decoupled to a large extent. Our work contributes to the understanding of the nonlinear process that underlies white-light generation in $(PhSn)_4S_6$ cluster molecules. Sustainable efficient light emitter based solely on elements-of-hope are needed to replace current compounds based on less-abundant materials. Functionalized diamondoids are a potential solution for this challenge as they offer efficient, octave-spanning emission across the visible spectrum in their single-crystalline form. Its large quantum efficiency increases towards higher-than-ambient temperatures to beyond 7 %. The stability beyond 200 {\deg}C renders such functionalized diamondoids as sustainable phosphors for LED applications. Functionalized adamantane molecular cluster materials show highly transient nonlinear optical properties of currently unclear structural origin. Several interaction mechanisms in compounds comprising molecular clusters, their inter- and intramolecular interactions as well as the interplay of their electronic systems and vibrations of their backbone are viable concepts to explain these nonlinear optical properties. We show that transient Coulomb forces also have to be considered as they can lead to intramolecular structure transformations and intermolecular rearrangements in the crystal. Both strongly influence the nonlinear optical properties. Moreover, selective bromine functionalization can trigger a photochemical rearrangement of the molecules. The structure and chemical bonding within the compounds are investigated in dependence on the laser irradiation at different stages of their nonlinear emission by electron diffraction and electron energy loss spectroscopy. The transient structural and chemical states observed are benchmarked by similar observations during electron irradiation, which makes quantification of structural changes possible and allows the correlation with first principles calculations. The functionalization and its subsequent usage to exploit photochemical effects can either enhance two-photon absorption or facilitate white-light emission rather than second-harmonic generation.

Amorphous materials are integral part of todays technology, they commonly are performant and versatile in integration. Consequently, future applications increasingly aim to harvest the potential of the amorphous state. Establishing its structure-property relationship, however, is inherently challenging using diffraction-based techniques yet is extremely desirable for developing advanced functionalities. In this article, we introduce a set of transmission electron microscopy-based techniques to locally quantify the structure of a material. This unique approach allows to clearly identify the spatial distribution of amorphous and crystalline regions and to quantify atomic arrangements of amorphous regions of a representative model system. We study an ensemble of well-defined, functionalized adamantane-type cluster molecules exhibiting exceptionally promising nonlinear optical properties of unclear origin. The nanoscopic structure for three model compounds ([(PhSn)4S6], [(NpSn)4S6], [(CpSn)4S6]) correlates with their characteristic optical responses. Objective. Algorithmic differentiation (AD) can be a useful technique to numerically optimize design and algorithmic parameters by, and quantify uncertainties in, computer simulations. However, the effectiveness of AD depends on how "well-linearizable" the software is. In this study, we assess how promising derivative information of a typical proton computed tomography (pCT) scan computer simulation is for the aforementioned applications. Approach. This study is mainly based on numerical experiments, in which we repeatedly evaluate three representative computational steps with perturbed input values. We support our observations with a review of the algorithmic steps and arithmetic operations performed by the software, using debugging techniques. Main results. The model-based iterative reconstruction (MBIR) subprocedure (at the end of the software pipeline) and the Monte Carlo (MC) simulation (at the beginning) were piecewise differentiable. Jumps in the MBIR function arose from the discrete computation of the set of voxels intersected by a proton path. Jumps in the MC function likely arose from changes in the control flow that affect the amount of consumed random numbers. The tracking algorithm solves an inherently non-differentiable problem. Significance. The MC and MBIR codes are ready for the integration of AD, and further research on surrogate models for the tracking subprocedure is necessary., Comment: 27 pages, 11 figures

Combining an x-ray free electron laser (XFEL) with high power laser drivers enables the study of phase transitions, equation-of-state, grain growth, strength, and transformation pathways as a function of pressure to 100s GPa along different thermodynamic compression paths. Future high-repetition rate laser operation will enable data to be accumulated at >1 Hz which poses a number of experimental challenges including the need to rapidly replenish the target. Here, we present a combined shock-compression and X-ray diffraction study on vol% epoxy(50)-crystalline grains(50) (slurry) targets, which can be fashioned into extruded ribbons for high repetition-rate operation. For shock-loaded NaCl-slurry samples, we observe pressure, density and temperature states within the embedded NaCl grains consistent with observations for shock-compressed single-crystal NaCl., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

We consider a spin-$j$ particle coupled to a structured bath of bosonic modes that decay into thermal baths. We obtain an analytic expression for the reduced spin state and use it to investigate non-Markovian spin dynamics. In the heavily overdamped regime, spin coherences are preserved due to a quantum Zeno affect. We extend the solution to two spins and include coupling between the modes, which can be leveraged for preservation of the symmetric spin subspace. For many spins, we find that inter-mode coupling gives rise to a privileged symmetric mode gapped from the other modes. This provides a handle to selectively address that privileged mode for quantum control of the collective spin. Finally, we show that our solution applies to defects in solid-state systems, such as NV$^{-}$ centres in diamond., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

We discuss the evolution of the quantum state of an ensemble of atoms that are coupled via a single propagating optical mode. We theoretically show that the quantum state of N atoms, which are initially prepared in the timed Dicke state, evolves through all the N - 1 states that are subradiant with respect to the propagating mode. We predict this process to occur for any atom number and any atom-light coupling strength. These findings are supported by measurements performed with cold cesium atoms coupled to the evanescent field of an optical nanofiber. We experimentally observe the evolution of the state of the ensemble passing through the first two subradiant states, leading to sudden, temporary switch-offs of the optical power emitted into the nanofiber.
