Cervical cancer remains the fourth most common malignancy amongst women worldwide.1 Concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CRT) serves as the mainstay definitive treatment regimen for locally advanced cervical cancers and includes external beam radiation followed by brachytherapy.2 Integral to radiotherapy treatment planning is the routine contouring of both the target tumor at the level of the cervix, associated gynecologic anatomy and the adjacent organs at risk (OARs). However, manual contouring of these structures is both time and labor intensive and associated with known interobserver variability that can impact treatment outcomes. While multiple tools have been developed to automatically segment OARs and the high-risk clinical tumor volume (HR-CTV) using computed tomography (CT) images,3,4,5,6 the development of deep learning-based tumor segmentation tools using routine T2-weighted (T2w) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) addresses an unmet clinical need to improve the routine contouring of both anatomical structures and cervical cancers, thereby increasing quality and consistency of radiotherapy planning. This work applied a novel deep-learning model (PocketNet) to segment the cervix, vagina, uterus, and tumor(s) on T2w MRI. The performance of the PocketNet architecture was evaluated, when trained on data via 5-fold cross validation. PocketNet achieved a mean Dice-Sorensen similarity coefficient (DSC) exceeding 70% for tumor segmentation and 80% for organ segmentation. These results suggest that PocketNet is robust to variations in contrast protocols, providing reliable segmentation of the ROIs.

Introduced in [CG24], pseudorandom error-correcting codes (PRCs) are a new cryptographic primitive with applications in watermarking generative AI models. These are codes where a collection of polynomially many codewords is computationally indistinguishable from random, except to individuals with the decoding key. In this work, we examine the assumptions under which PRCs with robustness to a constant error rate exist. 1. We show that if both the planted hyperloop assumption introduced in [BKR23] and security of a version of Goldreich's PRG hold, then there exist public-key PRCs for which no efficient adversary can distinguish a polynomial number of codewords from random with better than $o(1)$ advantage. 2. We revisit the construction of [CG24] and show that it can be based on a wider range of assumptions than presented in [CG24]. To do this, we introduce a weakened version of the planted XOR assumption which we call the weak planted XOR assumption and which may be of independent interest. 3. We initiate the study of PRCs which are secure against space-bounded adversaries. We show how to construct secret-key PRCs of length $O(n)$ which are $\textit{unconditionally}$ indistinguishable from random by $\text{poly}(n)$ time, $O(n^{1.5-\varepsilon})$ space adversaries., Comment: 37 pages, 1 figure

As a possible implementation of data storage using DNA, multiple strands of DNA are stored in a liquid container so that, in the future, they can be read by an array of DNA readers in parallel. These readers will sample the strands with replacement to produce a random number of noisy reads for each strand. An essential component of such a data storage system is how to reconstruct data out of these unsorted, repetitive, and noisy reads. It is known that if a single read can be modeled by a substitution channel $W$, then the overall capacity can be expressed by the "Poisson-ization" of $W$. In this paper, we lay down a rateless code along each strand to encode its index; we then lay down a capacity-achieving block code at the same position across all strands to protect data. We construct quantum codes that support transversal $CCZ$ gates over qudits of arbitrary prime power dimension $q$ (including $q=2$) such that the code dimension and distance grow linearly in the block length. The only previously known construction with such linear dimension and distance required a growing alphabet size $q$ (Krishna & Tillich, 2019). Our codes imply protocols for magic state distillation with overhead exponent $\gamma=\log(n/k)/\log(d)\rightarrow 0$ as the block length $n\rightarrow\infty$, where $k$ and $d$ denote the code dimension and distance respectively. It was previously an open question to obtain such a protocol with a contant alphabet size $q$. We construct our codes by combining two modular components, namely, (i) a transformation from classical codes satisfying certain properties to quantum codes supporting transversal $CCZ$ gates, and (ii) a concatenation scheme for reducing the alphabet size of codes supporting transversal $CCZ$ gates. For this scheme we introduce a quantum analogue of multiplication-friendly codes, which provide a way to express multiplication over a field in terms of a subfield. We obtain our asymptotically good construction by instantiating (i) with algebraic-geometric codes, and applying a constant number of iterations of (ii). We also give an alternative construction with nearly asymptotically good parameters ($k,d=n/2^{O(\log^*n)}$) by instantiating (i) with Reed-Solomon codes and then performing a superconstant number of iterations of (ii).

We present a systematic moment expansion for solving the semiclassical Boltzmann equations for electroweak baryogenesis. The expansion is developed in powers of adiabatic coordinate velocity, and it is used for computing the CP-violating seed asymmetry at the front of the phase transition wall, that sources the eventual baryon asymmetry of the universe (BAU). We implement the method in a benchmark model, with a CP-violating mass arising from a dimension-5 operator coupling the fermion to a singlet scalar field. We find that the higher moment calculations yield a BAU that can significantly differ from the commonly used two-moment approximation. We discuss in detail the underlying approximations in the moment method and propose a new truncation scheme for the expansion, that appears to give more numerically robust results than the previous schemes., Comment: 24 pages, 8 figures

In order to communicate a message over a noisy channel, a sender (Alice) uses an error-correcting code to encode her message $x$ into a codeword. The receiver (Bob) decodes it correctly whenever there is at most a small constant fraction of adversarial error in the transmitted codeword. This work investigates the setting where Bob is computationally bounded. Specifically, Bob receives the message as a stream and must process it and write $x$ in order to a write-only tape while using low (say polylogarithmic) space. We show three basic results about this setting, which are informally as follows: (1) There is a stream decodable code of near-quadratic length. (2) There is no stream decodable code of sub-quadratic length. (3) If Bob need only compute a private linear function of the input bits, instead of writing them all to the output tape, there is a stream decodable code of near-linear length.

To ensure differential privacy, one can reveal an integer fuzzily in two ways: (a) add some Laplace noise to the integer, or (b) encode the integer as a binary string and add iid BSC noise. The former is simple and natural while the latter is flexible and affordable, especially when one wants to reveal a sparse vector of integers. In this paper, we propose an implementation of (b) that achieves the capacity of the BSC with positive error exponents. Our implementation adds error-correcting functionality to Gray codes by mimicking how software updates back up the files that are getting updated ("coded Gray code"). In contrast, the old implementation of (b) interpolates between codewords of a black-box error-correcting code ("Grayed code")., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

The problem of efficiently coloring $3$-colorable graphs with few colors has received much attention on both the algorithmic and inapproximability fronts. We consider exponential time approximations, in which given a parameter $r$, we aim to develop an $r$-approximation algorithm with the best possible runtime, providing a tradeoff between runtime and approximation ratio. In this vein, an algorithm to $O(n^\varepsilon)$-color a 3-colorable graphs in time $2^{\Theta(n^{1-2\varepsilon}\log(n))}$ is given in (Atserias and Dalmau, SODA 2022.) We build on tools developed in (Bansal et al., Algorithmic, 2019) to obtain an algorithm to color $3$-colorable graphs with $O(r)$ colors in $\exp\left(\tilde{O}\left(\frac {n\log^{11/2}r} {r^3}\right)\right)$ time, asymptotically improving upon the bound given by Atserias and Dalmau.

We study the biological evolution of low-latency natural neural networks for short-term survival, and its parallels in the development of low latency high-performance Central Processing Unit in computer design and architecture. The necessity of accurate high-quality display of motion picture led to the special processing units known as the GPU, just as how special visual cortex regions of animals produced such low-latency computational capacity. The human brain, especially considered as nothing but a scaled-up version of a primate brain evolved in response to genomic bottleneck, producing a brain that is trainable and prunable by society, and as a further extension, invents language, writing and storage of narratives displaced in time and space. We conclude that this modern digital invention of social media and the archived collective common corpus has further evolved from just simple CPU-based low-latency fast retrieval to high-throughput parallel processing of data using GPUs to train Attention based Deep Learning Neural Networks producing Generative AI with aspects like toxicity, bias, memorization, hallucination, with intriguing close parallels in humans and their society. We show how this paves the way for constructive approaches to eliminating such drawbacks from human society and its proxy and collective large-scale mirror, the Generative AI of the LLMs.

Successive cancellation list (SCL) decoders of polar codes excel in practical performance but pose challenges for theoretical analysis. Existing works either limit their scope to erasure channels or address general channels without taking advantage of soft information. In this paper, we propose the "successive cancellation sampling" (SCS) decoder. SCS hires iid "agents" to sample codewords using posterior probabilities. This makes it fully parallel and amenable for some theoretical analysis. As an example, when comparing SCS with $a$ agents to any list decoder with list size $\ell$, we can prove that the error probability of the former is at most $\ell/ae$ more than that of the latter. In this paper, we also describe how to adjust the "temperature" of agents. Group testing (GT) is the art of identifying binary signals and the marketplace for exchanging new ideas for related fields such as unique-element counting, compressed sensing, traitor tracing, and geno-typing. A GT scheme can be nonadaptive or adaptive; the latter is preferred when latency is ess of an issue. To construct adaptive GT schemes, a popular strategy is to spend the majority of tests in the first few rounds to gain as much information as possible, and uses later rounds to refine details. In this paper, we propose a transparent strategy called "isolate and then identify" (I@I). In the first few rounds, I@I divides the population into teams until every team contains at most one sick person. Then, in the last round, I@I identifies the sick person in each team. Performance-wise, I@I is the first GT scheme that achieves the optimal coefficient $1/$capacity$(Z)$ for the $k \log_2 (n/k)$ term in the number of tests when $Z$ is a generic channel corrupting the test outcomes. We modify Cheraghchi-Nakos [CN20] and Price-Scarlett's [PS20] fast binary splitting approach to nonadaptive group testing. We show that, to identify a uniformly random subset of $k$ infected persons among a population of $n$, it takes only $\ln(2 - 4\varepsilon) ^{-2} k \ln n$ tests and decoding complexity $O(\varepsilon^{-2} k \ln n)$, for any small $\varepsilon > 0$, with vanishing error probability. In works prior to ours, only two types of group testing schemes exist. Those that use $\ln(2)^{-2} k \ln n$ or fewer tests require linear-in-$n$ complexity, sometimes even polynomial in $n$; those that enjoy sub-$n$ complexity employ $O(k \ln n)$ tests, where the big-$O$ scalar is implicit, presumably greater than $\ln(2)^{-2}$. We almost achieve the best of both worlds, namely, the almost-$\ln(2)^{-2}$ scalar and the sub-$n$ decoding complexity. Polar codes that approach capacity at a near-optimal speed, namely with scaling exponents close to $2$, have been shown possible for $q$-ary erasure channels (Pfister and Urbanke), the BEC (Fazeli, Hassani, Mondelli, and Vardy), all BMS channels (Guruswami, Riazanov, and Ye), and all DMCs (Wang and Duursma). There is, nevertheless, a subtlety separating the last two papers from the first two, namely the usage of multiple dynamic kernels in the polarization process, which leads to increased complexity and fewer opportunities to hardware-accelerate. This paper clarifies this subtlety, providing a trade-off between the number of kernels in the construction and the scaling exponent. We show that the number of kernels can be bounded by $O(\ell^{3/\mu-1})$ where $\mu$ is the targeted scaling exponent and $\ell$ is the kernel size. In particular, if one settles for scaling exponent approaching $3$, a single kernel suffices, and to approach the optimal scaling exponent of $2$, about $O(\sqrt{\ell})$ kernels suffice., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, ISIT 2023

Formulating mitigation strategies is one of the main aspect in the dynamical study of extreme events. Apart from the effective control, easy implementation of the devised tool should also be given importance. In this work, we analyze the mitigation of extreme events in a coupled FitzHugh-Nagumo (FHN) neuron model utilizing an easily implementable constant bias analogous to a constant DC stimulant. We report the route through which the extreme events gets mitigated in $Two$, $Three$ and $N-$coupled FHN systems. In all the three cases, extreme events in the observable $\bar{x}$ gets suppressed. We confirm our results with the probability distribution function of peaks, $d_{max}$ plot and probability plots. Here $d_{max}$ is a measure of number of standard deviations that crosses the average amplitude corresponding to $\bar{x}_{max}$. Biomedical data is growing exponentially, and managing it is increasingly challenging. While Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable (FAIR) data principles provide guidance, their adoption has proven difficult, especially in larger enterprises like pharmaceutical companies. In this manuscript, we describe how we leverage an Ontology-Based Data Management (OBDM) strategy for digital transformation in Novo Nordisk Research & Early Development. Here, we include both our technical blueprint and our approach for organizational change management. We further discuss how such an OBDM ecosystem plays a pivotal role in the organizations digital aspirations for data federation and discovery fuelled by artificial intelligence. We consider the task of certifying that a random $d$-dimensional subspace $X$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ is well-spread - every vector $x \in X$ satisfies $c\sqrt{n} \|x\|_2 \leq \|x\|_1 \leq \sqrt{n}\|x\|_2$. In a seminal work, Barak et. al. showed a polynomial-time certification algorithm when $d \leq O(\sqrt{n})$. On the other hand, when $d \gg \sqrt{n}$, the certification task is information-theoretically possible but there is evidence that it is computationally hard [MW21,Cd22], a phenomenon known as the information-computation gap. In this paper, we give subexponential-time certification algorithms in the $d \gg \sqrt{n}$ regime. Our algorithm runs in time $\exp(\widetilde{O}(n^{\varepsilon}))$ when $d \leq \widetilde{O}(n^{(1+\varepsilon)/2})$, establishing a smooth trade-off between runtime and the dimension. Our techniques naturally extend to the related planted problem, where the task is to recover a sparse vector planted in a random subspace. In the field of remote sensing, the scarcity of stereo-matched and particularly lack of accurate ground truth data often hinders the training of deep neural networks. The use of synthetically generated images as an alternative, alleviates this problem but suffers from the problem of domain generalization. Unifying the capabilities of image-to-image translation and stereo-matching presents an effective solution to address the issue of domain generalization. Current methods involve combining two networks, an unpaired image-to-image translation network and a stereo-matching network, while jointly optimizing them. We propose an edge-aware GAN-based network that effectively tackles both tasks simultaneously. We obtain edge maps of input images from the Sobel operator and use it as an additional input to the encoder in the generator to enforce geometric consistency during translation. We additionally include a warping loss calculated from the translated images to maintain the stereo consistency. We demonstrate that our model produces qualitatively and quantitatively superior results than existing models, and its applicability extends to diverse domains, including autonomous driving., Comment: Accepted to IEEE Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition Workshop (CVPRW) EarthVision

The Parameterized Inapproximability Hypothesis (PIH), which is an analog of the PCP theorem in parameterized complexity, asserts that, there is a constant $\varepsilon> 0$ such that for any computable function $f:\mathbb{N}\to\mathbb{N}$, no $f(k)\cdot n^{O(1)}$-time algorithm can, on input a $k$-variable CSP instance with domain size $n$, find an assignment satisfying $1-\varepsilon$ fraction of the constraints. A recent work by Guruswami, Lin, Ren, Sun, and Wu (STOC'24) established PIH under the Exponential Time Hypothesis (ETH). In this work, we improve the quantitative aspects of PIH and prove (under ETH) that approximating sparse parameterized CSPs within a constant factor requires $n^{k^{1-o(1)}}$ time. This immediately implies that, assuming ETH, finding a $(k/2)$-clique in an $n$-vertex graph with a $k$-clique requires $n^{k^{1-o(1)}}$ time. We also prove almost optimal time lower bounds for approximating $k$-ExactCover and Max $k$-Coverage. Our proof follows the blueprint of the previous work to identify a "vector-structured" ETH-hard CSP whose satisfiability can be checked via an appropriate form of "parallel" PCP. Using further ideas in the reduction, we guarantee additional structures for constraints in the CSP. We then leverage this to design a parallel PCP of almost linear size based on Reed-Muller codes and derandomized low degree testing.

We prove that a binary linear code of block length $n$ that is locally correctable with $3$ queries against a fraction $\delta > 0$ of adversarial errors must have dimension at most $O_{\delta}(\log^2 n \cdot \log \log n)$. This is almost tight in view of quadratic Reed-Muller codes being a $3$-query locally correctable code (LCC) with dimension $\Theta(\log^2 n)$. Our result improves, for the binary field case, the $O_{\delta}(\log^8 n)$ bound obtained in the recent breakthrough of (Kothari and Manohar, 2023) (arXiv:2311.00558) (and the more recent improvement to $O_{\delta}(\log^4 n)$ for binary linear codes announced in (Yankovitz, 2024)). Previous bounds for $3$-query linear LCCs proceed by constructing a $2$-query locally decodable code (LDC) from the $3$-query linear LCC/LDC and applying the strong bounds known for the former. Our approach is more direct and proceeds by bounding the covering radius of the dual code, borrowing inspiration from (Iceland and Samorodnitsky, 2018) (arXiv:1802.01184). That is, we show that if $x \mapsto (v_1 \cdot x, v_2 \cdot x, \ldots, v_n \cdot x)$ is an arbitrary encoding map $\mathbb{F}_2^k \to \mathbb{F}_2^n$ for the $3$-query LCC, then all vectors in $\mathbb{F}_2^k$ can be written as a $\widetilde{O}_{\delta}(\log n)$-sparse linear combination of the $v_i$'s, which immediately implies $k \le \widetilde{O}_{\delta}((\log n)^2)$. The proof of this fact proceeds by iteratively reducing the size of any arbitrary linear combination of at least $\widetilde{\Omega}_{\delta}(\log n)$ of the $v_i$'s. We achieve this using the recent breakthrough result of (Alon, Buci\'c, Sauermann, Zakharov, and Zamir, 2023) (arXiv:2309.04460) on the existence of rainbow cycles in properly edge-colored graphs, applied to graphs capturing the linear dependencies underlying the local correction property., Comment: 17 pages; 1 figure

In recent years the framework of learning from label proportions (LLP) has been gaining importance in machine learning. In this setting, the training examples are aggregated into subsets or bags and only the average label per bag is available for learning an example-level predictor. This generalizes traditional PAC learning which is the special case of unit-sized bags. The computational learning aspects of LLP were studied in recent works (Saket, NeurIPS'21; Saket, NeurIPS'22) which showed algorithms and hardness for learning halfspaces in the LLP setting. In this work we focus on the intractability of LLP learning Boolean functions. Our first result shows that given a collection of bags of size at most $2$ which are consistent with an OR function, it is NP-hard to find a CNF of constantly many clauses which satisfies any constant-fraction of the bags. This is in contrast with the work of (Saket, NeurIPS'21) which gave a $(2/5)$-approximation for learning ORs using a halfspace. Thus, our result provides a separation between constant clause CNFs and halfspaces as hypotheses for LLP learning ORs. Next, we prove the hardness of satisfying more than $1/2 + o(1)$ fraction of such bags using a $t$-DNF (i.e. DNF where each term has $\leq t$ literals) for any constant $t$. In usual PAC learning such a hardness was known (Khot-Saket, FOCS'08) only for learning noisy ORs. We also study the learnability of parities and show that it is NP-hard to satisfy more than $(q/2^{q-1} + o(1))$-fraction of $q$-sized bags which are consistent with a parity using a parity, while a random parity based algorithm achieves a $(1/2^{q-2})$-approximation., Comment: 17 pages. We study the problem of robust multivariate polynomial regression: let $p\colon\mathbb{R}^n\to\mathbb{R}$ be an unknown $n$-variate polynomial of degree at most $d$ in each variable. We are given as input a set of random samples $(\mathbf{x}_i,y_i) \in [-1,1]^n \times \mathbb{R}$ that are noisy versions of $(\mathbf{x}_i,p(\mathbf{x}_i))$. More precisely, each $\mathbf{x}_i$ is sampled independently from some distribution $\chi$ on $[-1,1]^n$, and for each $i$ independently, $y_i$ is arbitrary (i.e., an outlier) with probability at most $\rho < 1/2$, and otherwise satisfies $|y_i-p(\mathbf{x}_i)|\leq\sigma$. The goal is to output a polynomial $\hat{p}$, of degree at most $d$ in each variable, within an $\ell_\infty$-distance of at most $O(\sigma)$ from $p$. Kane, Karmalkar, and Price [FOCS'17] solved this problem for $n=1$. We generalize their results to the $n$-variate setting, showing an algorithm that achieves a sample complexity of $O_n(d^n\log d)$, where the hidden constant depends on $n$, if $\chi$ is the $n$-dimensional Chebyshev distribution. The sample complexity is $O_n(d^{2n}\log d)$, if the samples are drawn from the uniform distribution instead. The approximation error is guaranteed to be at most $O(\sigma)$, and the run-time depends on $\log(1/\sigma)$. In the setting where each $\mathbf{x}_i$ and $y_i$ are known up to $N$ bits of precision, the run-time's dependence on $N$ is linear. We also show that our sample complexities are optimal in terms of $d^n$. Furthermore, we show that it is possible to have the run-time be independent of $1/\sigma$, at the cost of a higher sample complexity.

Electronic liquid crystal (ELC) phases are spontaneous symmetry breaking states believed to arise from strong electron correlation in quantum materials such as cuprates and iron pnictides. Here, we report a direct observation of ELC phases in a Dirac nodal line (DNL) semimetal GdSbxTe2-x. Electronic nanostructures consisting of incommensurate smectic charge modulation and intense local nematic order are visualized by using spectroscopic imaging - scanning tunneling microscopy. As topological materials with symmetry protected Dirac or Weyl fermions are mostly weakly correlated, the discovery of such ELC phases are anomalous and raise questions on the origin of their emergence. Specifically, we demonstrate how chemical substitution generates these symmetry breaking phases before the system undergoes a charge density wave - orthorhombic structural transition. We further show how dopants can induce nematicity via quasiparticle scattering interference. Our results highlight the importance of impurities in realizing ELC phases and present a new material platform for exploring the interplay among quenched disorder, topology and electron correlation.

We provide a birds eye view of the rapid developments in AI and Deep Learning that has led to the path-breaking emergence of AI in Large Language Models. The aim of this study is to place all these developments in a pragmatic broader historical social perspective without any exaggerations while at the same time without any pessimism that created the AI winter in the 1970s to 1990s. We also at the same time point out toxicity, bias, memorization, sycophancy, logical inconsistencies, hallucinations that exist just as a warning to the overly optimistic. We note here that just as this emergence of AI seems to occur at a threshold point in the number of neural connections or weights, it has also been observed that human brain and especially the cortex region is nothing special or extraordinary but simply a case of scaled-up version of the primate brain and that even the human intelligence seems like an emergent phenomena of scale.

Recent studies on reservoir computing essentially involve a high dimensional dynamical system as the reservoir, which transforms and stores the input as a higher dimensional state, for temporal and nontemporal data processing. We demonstrate here a method to predict temporal and nontemporal tasks by constructing virtual nodes as constituting a reservoir in reservoir computing using a nonlinear map, namely the logistic map, and a simple finite trigonometric series. We predict three nonlinear systems, namely Lorenz, Rossler, and Hindmarsh-Rose, for temporal tasks and a seventh order polynomial for nontemporal tasks with great accuracy. Also, the prediction is made in the presence of noise and found to closely agree with the target. Remarkably, the logistic map performs well and predicts close to the actual or target values. The low values of the root mean square error confirm the accuracy of this method in terms of efficiency. Our approach removes the necessity of continuous dynamical systems for constructing the reservoir in reservoir computing. Moreover, the accurate prediction for the three different nonlinear systems suggests that this method can be considered a general one and can be applied to predict many systems. We report the occurrence of vibrational resonance (VR) and the underlying mechanism in a simple piecewise linear electronic circuit, namely the Murali-Lakshmanan-Chua (MLC) circuit, driven by an additional biharmonic signal with widely different frequency. When the amplitude of the high-frequency force is tuned, the resultant vibrational resonance is used to detect the low-frequency signal and also to enhance it into a high-frequency signal. Further, we also show that even when the low-frequency signal is changed from sine wave to square and sawtooth waves, vibrational resonance can be used to detect and enhance them into high-frequency signals. These behaviors, confirmed by experimental results, are illustrated with appropriate analytical and numerical solutions of the corresponding circuit equations describing the system. In the pursuit of advanced photoelectric devices, researchers have uncovered near room-temperature metal-insulator transitions (MIT) in non-volatile VO2. Although theoretical investigations propose that polaron dynamics mediate the MIT, direct experimental evidence remains scarce. In this study, we present direct evidence of the polaron state in insulating VO2 through high-resolution spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements and first-principles calculations. We demonstrate that polaron dynamics play a complementary role in facilitating Peierls and Mott transitions to contribute to the MIT processes. Moreover, our observations and characterizations of conventional metallic and correlated plasmons in the respective phases of the VO2 film provide valuable insights into their electron structures. Automatic assessment of impairment and disease severity is a key challenge in data-driven medicine. We propose a novel framework to address this challenge, which leverages AI models trained exclusively on healthy individuals. The COnfidence-Based chaRacterization of Anomalies (COBRA) score exploits the decrease in confidence of these models when presented with impaired or diseased patients to quantify their deviation from the healthy population. We applied the COBRA score to address a key limitation of current clinical evaluation of upper-body impairment in stroke patients. The gold-standard Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA) requires in-person administration by a trained assessor for 30-45 minutes, which restricts monitoring frequency and precludes physicians from adapting rehabilitation protocols to the progress of each patient. The COBRA score, computed automatically in under one minute, is shown to be strongly correlated with the FMA on an independent test cohort for two different data modalities: wearable sensors ($\rho = 0.845$, 95% CI [0.743,0.908]) and video ($\rho = 0.746$, 95% C.I [0.594, 0.847]). To demonstrate the generalizability of the approach to other conditions, the COBRA score was also applied to quantify severity of knee osteoarthritis from magnetic-resonance imaging scans, again achieving significant correlation with an independent clinical assessment ($\rho = 0.644$, 95% C.I [0.585,0.696])., Comment: 32 pages, 10 figures

A spectroscopic imaging-scanning tunneling microscope (SI-STM) allows the atomic scale visualization of surface electronic and magnetic structure of novel quantum materials with high energy resolution. To achieve the optimal performance, low vibration facility is required. Here, we describe the design and the performance of an ultrahigh vacuum STM system supported by a hybrid vibration isolation system that consists of a pneumatic passive and a piezoelectric active vibration isolation stages. The STM system is equipped with a 1K pot cryogenic insert and a 9 Tesla superconducting magnet, capable of continuous SI-STM measurements for 7 days. A field ion microscopy system is installed for in situ STM tip treatment. We present the detailed vibrational noise analysis of the hybrid vibration isolation system and demonstrate the performance of our STM system by taking high resolution spectroscopic maps and topographic images on several quantum materials. Our results establish a new strategy to achieve an effective vibration isolation system for high-resolution STM and other scanning probe microscopy to investigate the nanoscale quantum phenomena.

Classical locally recoverable codes, which permit highly efficient recovery from localized errors as well as global recovery from larger errors, provide some of the most useful codes for distributed data storage in practice. In this paper, we initiate the study of quantum locally recoverable codes (qLRCs). In the long term, like their classical counterparts, such qLRCs may be used for large-scale quantum data storage. Our results also have concrete implications for quantum LDPC codes, which are applicable to near-term quantum error-correction. After defining quantum local recoverability, we provide an explicit construction of qLRCs based on the classical LRCs of Tamo and Barg (2014), which we show have (1) a close-to-optimal rate-distance tradeoff (i.e. near the Singleton bound), (2) an efficient decoder, and (3) permit good spatial locality in a physical implementation. Although the analysis is significantly more involved than in the classical case, we obtain close-to-optimal parameters by introducing a "folded" version of our quantum Tamo-Barg (qTB) codes, which we then analyze using a combination of algebraic techniques. We furthermore present and analyze two additional constructions using more basic techniques, namely random qLRCs, and qLRCs from AEL distance amplification. Each of these constructions has some advantages, but neither achieves all 3 properties of our folded qTB codes described above. We complement these constructions with Singleton-like bounds that show our qLRC constructions achieve close-to-optimal parameters. We also apply these results to obtain Singleton-like bounds for qLDPC codes, which to the best of our knowledge are novel. We then show that even the weakest form of a stronger locality property called local correctability, which permits more robust local recovery and is achieved by certain classical codes, is impossible quantumly.

Group testing (GT) is the Boolean version of spare signal recovery and, due to its simplicity, a marketplace for ideas that can be brought to bear upon related problems, such as heavy hitters, compressed sensing, and multiple access channels. The definition of a "good" GT varies from one buyer to another, but it generally includes (i) usage of nonadaptive tests, (ii) limiting to $O(k \log n)$ tests, (iii) resiliency to test noise, (iv) $O(k \mathrm{poly}(\log n))$ decoding time, and (v) lack of mistakes. In this paper, we propose $Gacha~GT$. Gacha is an elementary and self-contained, versatile and unified scheme that, for the first time, satisfies all criteria for a fairly large region of parameters, namely when $\log k < \log(n)^{1-1/O(1)}$. Outside this parameter region, Gacha can be specialized to outperform the state-of-the-art partial-recovery GTs, exact-recovery GTs, and worst-case GTs. The new idea Gacha brings to the market is a redesigned Reed--Solomon code for probabilistic list-decoding at diminishing code rates over reasonably-large alphabets. Normally, list-decoding a vanilla Reed--Solomon code is equivalent to the nontrivial task of identifying the subsets of points that fit low-degree polynomials. While macroscopic models for single or multi-lane traffic flow are well established, these models are not applicable to the dynamics and characteristics of disordered traffic which is characterized by widely different types of vehicles and no lane discipline. We propose a first-order two-dimensional Lighthill-Whitham-Richards (LWR) model for the continuous macroscopic longitudinal and lateral dynamics of this type of traffic flow. The continuity equation is extended into two dimensions and the equation is closed by assuming a longitudinal flow-density relationship as in traditional one-dimensional models while the lateral dynamics is based on boundary repulsion and a desire of a majority of the drivers to go to less dense regions. This is equivalent to Fick's law giving rise to a lateral diffusion term. Using the proposed model, several numerical tests were conducted under different traffic scenarios representing a wide range of traffic conditions. Even for extreme initial conditions, the model's outcome turned out to be plausible and consistent with observed traffic flow dynamics. Moreover, the numerical convergence test is performed using an analytical solution for lateral steady-state conditions. The model was applied for bicycle simulation and reproduced the evolution of lateral density profile with asymmetric behavior.

The Parameterized Inapproximability Hypothesis (PIH) is the analog of the PCP theorem in the world of parameterized complexity. It asserts that no FPT algorithm can distinguish a satisfiable 2CSP instance from one which is only $(1-\varepsilon)$-satisfiable (where the parameter is the number of variables) for some constant $0<\varepsilon<1$. We consider a minimization version of CSPs (Min-CSP), where one may assign $r$ values to each variable, and the goal is to ensure that every constraint is satisfied by some choice among the $r \times r$ pairs of values assigned to its variables (call such a CSP instance $r$-list-satisfiable). We prove the following strong parameterized inapproximability for Min CSP: For every $r \ge 1$, it is W[1]-hard to tell if a 2CSP instance is satisfiable or is not even $r$-list-satisfiable. We refer to this statement as "Baby PIH", following the recently proved Baby PCP Theorem (Barto and Kozik, 2021). Our proof adapts the combinatorial arguments underlying the Baby PCP theorem, overcoming some basic obstacles that arise in the parameterized setting. Furthermore, our reduction runs in time polynomially bounded in both the number of variables and the alphabet size, and thus implies the Baby PCP theorem as well.

Electronic correlation and reconstruction are two important factors that play a critical role in shaping the magnetic and electronic properties of correlated low-dimensional systems. Here, we report a competition between the electronic correlation and structural reconstruction in La1-xSrxTiO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures by modulating material polarity and interfacial strain, respectively. The heterostructures exhibit a critical thickness (tc) at which a metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) abruptly occurs at certain thickness, accompanied by the coexistence of two- and three-dimensional (2D and 3D) carriers. Intriguingly, the tc exhibits a V-shaped dependence on the doping concentration of Sr, with the smallest tc value at x = 0.5. We attribute this V-shaped dependence to the competition between the electronic reconstruction (modulated by the polarity) and the electronic correlation (modulated by strain), which are borne out by the experimental results, including strain-dependent electronic properties and the evolution of 2D and 3D carriers. Our findings underscore the significance of the interplay between electronic reconstruction and correlation in the realization and utilization of emergent electronic functionalities in low-dimensional correlated systems.

The advancements in data acquisition, storage, and processing techniques have resulted in the rapid growth of heterogeneous medical data. Integrating radiological scans, histopathology images, and molecular information with clinical data is essential for developing a holistic understanding of the disease and optimizing treatment. The need for integrating data from multiple sources is further pronounced in complex diseases such as cancer for enabling precision medicine and personalized treatments. This work proposes Multimodal Integration of Oncology Data System (MINDS) - a flexible, scalable, and cost-effective metadata framework for efficiently fusing disparate data from public sources such as the Cancer Research Data Commons (CRDC) into an interconnected, patient-centric framework. MINDS offers an interface for exploring relationships across data types and building cohorts for developing large-scale multimodal machine learning models. By harmonizing multimodal data, MINDS aims to potentially empower researchers with greater analytical ability to uncover diagnostic and prognostic insights and enable evidence-based personalized care. MINDS tracks granular end-to-end data provenance, ensuring reproducibility and transparency. The cloud-native architecture of MINDS can handle exponential data growth in a secure, cost-optimized manner while ensuring substantial storage optimization, replication avoidance, and dynamic access capabilities. Auto-scaling, access controls, and other mechanisms guarantee pipelines' scalability and security. MINDS overcomes the limitations of existing biomedical data silos via an interoperable metadata-driven approach that represents a pivotal step toward the future of oncology data integration.

We present an efficient algorithm to solve semirandom planted instances of any Boolean constraint satisfaction problem (CSP). The semirandom model is a hybrid between worst-case and average-case input models, where the input is generated by (1) choosing an arbitrary planted assignment $x^*$, (2) choosing an arbitrary clause structure, and (3) choosing literal negations for each clause from an arbitrary distribution "shifted by $x^*$" so that $x^*$ satisfies each constraint. For an $n$ variable semirandom planted instance of a $k$-arity CSP, our algorithm runs in polynomial time and outputs an assignment that satisfies all but a $o(1)$-fraction of constraints, provided that the instance has at least $\tilde{O}(n^{k/2})$ constraints. This matches, up to $polylog(n)$ factors, the clause threshold for algorithms that solve fully random planted CSPs [FPV15], as well as algorithms that refute random and semirandom CSPs [AOW15, AGK21]. Our result shows that despite having worst-case clause structure, the randomness in the literal patterns makes semirandom planted CSPs significantly easier than worst-case, where analogous results require $O(n^k)$ constraints [AKK95, FLP16]. Perhaps surprisingly, our algorithm follows a significantly different conceptual framework when compared to the recent resolution of semirandom CSP refutation. This turns out to be inherent and, at a technical level, can be attributed to the need for relative spectral approximation of certain random matrices - reminiscent of the classical spectral sparsification - which ensures that an SDP can certify the uniqueness of the planted assignment. In contrast, in the refutation setting, it suffices to obtain a weaker guarantee of absolute upper bounds on the spectral norm of related matrices., Comment: FOCS 2023

Industry and academia have been working towards the evolution from Centralized massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (CmMIMO) to Distributed mMIMO (DmMIMO) architectures. Instead of splitting a coverage area into many cells, each served by a single Base Station equipped with several antennas, the whole coverage area is jointly covered by several Access Points (AP) equipped with few or single antennas. Nevertheless, when choosing between deploying more APs with few or single antennas or fewer APs equipped with many antennas, one observes an inherent trade-off between the beamforming and macro-diversity gains that has not been investigated in the literature. Given a total number of antenna elements and total downlink power, under a channel model that takes into account a probability of Line-of-Sight (LoS) as a function of the distance between the User Equipments (UEs) and APs, our numerical results show that there exists a ``sweet spot" on the optimal number of APs and of antenna elements per AP which is a function of the physical dimensions of the coverage area., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. A code $C \colon \{0,1\}^k \to \{0,1\}^n$ is a $q$-locally decodable code ($q$-LDC) if one can recover any chosen bit $b_i$ of the message $b \in \{0,1\}^k$ with good confidence by randomly querying the encoding $x := C(b)$ on at most $q$ coordinates. Existing constructions of $2$-LDCs achieve $n = \exp(O(k))$, and lower bounds show that this is in fact tight. However, when $q = 3$, far less is known: the best constructions achieve $n = \exp(k^{o(1)})$, while the best known results only show a quadratic lower bound $n \geq \tilde{\Omega}(k^2)$ on the blocklength. In this paper, we prove a near-cubic lower bound of $n \geq \tilde{\Omega}(k^3)$ on the blocklength of $3$-query LDCs. This improves on the best known prior works by a polynomial factor in $k$. Our proof relies on a new connection between LDCs and refuting constraint satisfaction problems with limited randomness. Our quantitative improvement builds on the new techniques for refuting semirandom instances of CSPs developed in [GKM22, HKM23] and, in particular, relies on bounding the spectral norm of appropriate Kikuchi matrices.

A simple, recently observed generalization of the classical Singleton bound to list-decoding asserts that rate $R$ codes are not list-decodable using list-size $L$ beyond an error fraction $\frac{L}{L+1} (1-R)$ (the Singleton bound being the case of $L=1$, i.e., unique decoding). We prove that in order to approach this bound for any fixed $L >1$, one needs exponential alphabets. Specifically, for every $L>1$ and $R\in(0,1)$, if a rate $R$ code can be list-of-$L$ decoded up to error fraction $\frac{L}{L+1} (1-R -\varepsilon)$, then its alphabet must have size at least $\exp(\Omega_{L,R}(1/\varepsilon))$. This is in sharp contrast to the situation for unique decoding where certain families of rate $R$ algebraic-geometry (AG) codes over an alphabet of size $O(1/\varepsilon^2)$ are unique-decodable up to error fraction $(1-R-\varepsilon)/2$. Our bounds hold even for subconstant $\varepsilon\ge 1/n$, implying that any code exactly achieving the $L$-th generalized Singleton bound requires alphabet size $2^{\Omega_{L,R}(n)}$. Previously this was only known only for $L=2$ under the additional assumptions that the code is both linear and MDS. Our lower bound is tight up to constant factors in the exponent -- with high probability random codes (or, as shown recently, even random linear codes) over $\exp(O_L(1/\varepsilon))$-sized alphabets, can be list-of-$L$ decoded up to error fraction $\frac{L}{L+1} (1-R -\varepsilon)$.

This study focuses on Pristine$\_180956.78$$-$$294759.8$ (hereafter P180956, $[Fe/H] =-1.95\pm0.02$), a star selected from the Pristine Inner Galaxy Survey (PIGS), and followed-up with the recently commissioned Gemini High-resolution Optical SpecTrograph (GHOST) at the Gemini South telescope. The GHOST spectrograph's high efficiency in the blue spectral region ($3700-4800$~\AA) enables the detection of elemental tracers of early supernovae (\eg Al, Mn, Sr, Eu). The star exhibits chemical signatures resembling those found in ultra-faint dwarf systems, characterised by very low abundances of neutron-capture elements (Sr, Ba, Eu), which are uncommon among stars in the Milky Way halo. Our analysis suggests that P180956 bears the chemical imprints of a small number (2 or 4) of low-mass hypernovae ($\sim10-15 M_{\odot}$), which are needed to mostly reproduce the abundance pattern of the light-elements (\eg [Si, Ti/Mg, Ca] $\sim0.6$), and one fast-rotating intermediate-mass supernova ($\sim300\kms$, $\sim80-120 M_{\odot}$), which is the main channel contributing to the high [Sr/Ba] ($\sim +1.2$). The small pericentric ($\sim0.7$ kpc) and apocentric ($\sim13$ kpc) distances and its orbit confined to the plane ($\lesssim 2$ kpc), indicate that this star was likely accreted during the early Galactic assembly phase. Its chemo-dynamical properties suggest that P180956 formed in a system similar to an ultra-faint dwarf galaxy accreted either alone, as one of the low-mass building blocks of the proto-Galaxy, or as a satellite of Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus. Statechart is a visual modelling language for systems. In this paper, we extend our earlier work on modular statecharts with local variables and present an updated operational semantics for statecharts with concurrency. Our variant of the statechart has local variables, which interact significantly with the remainder of the language semantics. Our semantics does not allow transition conflicts in simulations and is stricter than most other available semantics of statecharts in that sense. It allows arbitrary interleaving of concurrently executing action code, which allows more precise modelling of systems and upstream analysis of the same. We present the operational semantics in the form of the simulation algorithm. We also establish the criteria based on our semantics for defining conflicting transitions and valid simulations. Our semantics is executable and can be used to simulate statechart models and verify their correctness. We present a preliminary setup to carry out fuzz testing of Statechart models, an idea that does not seem to have a precedent in literature. We have used our simulator in conjunction with a well-known fuzzer to do fuzz testing of statechart models of non-trivial sizes and have found issues in them that would have been hard to find through inspection., Comment: 24 pages

For quantum error-correcting codes to be realizable, it is important that the qubits subject to the code constraints exhibit some form of limited connectivity. The works of Bravyi & Terhal (BT) and Bravyi, Poulin & Terhal (BPT) established that geometric locality constrains code properties -- for instance $[[n,k,d]]$ quantum codes defined by local checks on the $D$-dimensional lattice must obey $k d^{2/(D-1)} \le O(n)$. Baspin and Krishna studied the more general question of how the connectivity graph associated with a quantum code constrains the code parameters. These trade-offs apply to a richer class of codes compared to the BPT and BT bounds, which only capture geometrically-local codes. We extend and improve this work, establishing a tighter dimension-distance trade-off as a function of the size of separators in the connectivity graph. Oxide heterostructures have shown rich physics phenomena, particularly in the conjunction of exotic insulator-metal transition (IMT) at the interface between polar insulator LaAlO3 and non-polar insulator SrTiO3 (LaAlO3/SrTiO3). Polarization catastrophe model has suggested an electronic reconstruction yielding to metallicity at both the interface and surface. Another scenario is the occurrence of surface oxygen vacancy at LaAlO3 (surface-Ov), which has predicted surface-to-interface charge transfer yielding metallic interface but insulating surface. To clarify the origin of IMT, one should probe surface-Ov and the associated electronic structures at both the surface and the buried interface simultaneously. Here, using low-angle resonant soft X-ray scattering (LA-RSXS) supported with first-principles calculations, we reveal the co-existence of the surface-Ov state and the interface conducting state only in conducting LaAlO3/SrTiO3 (001) films. Interestingly, both the surface-Ov state and the interface conducting state are absent for the insulating film. As a function of Ov density, while the surface-Ov state is responsible for the IMT, the spatial charge distribution is found responsible for a transition from two-dimensional-like to three-dimensional-like conducting accompanied by spectral weight transfer, revealing the importance of electronic correlation. Our results show the importance of surface-Ov in determining interface properties and provides a new strategy in utilizing LA-RSXS to directly probe the surface and buried interface electronic properties in complex oxide heterostructures.

The Gemini High-resolution Optical SpecTrograph (GHOST) is the newest high resolution spectrograph to be developed for a large aperture telescope, recently deployed and commissioned at the Gemini-South telescope. In this paper, we present the first science results from the GHOST spectrograph taking during its commissioning runs. We have observed the bright metal-poor benchmark star HD 122563, along with two stars in the ultra faint dwarf galaxy, Ret II, one of which was previously identified as a candidate member, but did not have a previous detailed chemical abundance analysis. This star (GDR3 0928) is found to be a bona fide member of Ret II, and from a spectral synthesis analysis, it is also revealed to be a CEMP-r star, with significant enhancements in the several light elements (C, N, O, Na, Mg, and Si), in addition to featuring an r-process enhancement like many other Ret II stars. The light-element enhancements in this star resemble the abundance patterns seen in the CEMP-no stars of other ultra faint dwarf galaxies, and are thought to have been produced by an independent source from the r-process. In the present work, we examine the role of nonlinearity in vibrational resonance (VR) of a forced and damped form of a velocity-dependent potential system. Many studies have focused on studying the vibrational resonance in different potentials, like bistable potential, asymmetrically deformed potential, and rough potential. In this connection, velocity-dependent potential systems are very important from a physical point of view (Ex: pion-pion interaction, cyclotrons and other electromagnetic devices influenced by the Lorentz force, magnetrons, mass spectrometers). They also appear in several mechanical contexts. In this paper, we consider a nonlinear dynamical system with velocity-dependent potential along with additional damping and driven forces, namely a particle moving on a rotating-parabola system, and study the effect of two-frequency forcing with a wide difference in the frequencies. We report that the system exhibits vibrational resonance in a certain range of nonlinear strength. Using the method of separation of motions (MSM), an analytical equation for the slow oscillations of the system is obtained in terms of the parameters of the fast signal. We present an explicit construction of a sequence of rate $1/2$ Wozencraft ensemble codes (over any fixed finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$) that achieve minimum distance $\Omega(\sqrt{k})$ where $k$ is the message length. The coefficients of the Wozencraft ensemble codes are constructed using Sidon Sets and the cyclic structure of $\mathbb{F}_{q^{k}}$ where $k+1$ is prime with $q$ a primitive root modulo $k+1$. Assuming Artin's conjecture, there are infinitely many such $k$ for any prime power $q$.

Reed--Solomon codes are a classic family of error-correcting codes consisting of evaluations of low-degree polynomials over a finite field on some sequence of distinct field elements. They are widely known for their optimal unique-decoding capabilities, but their list-decoding capabilities are not fully understood. Given the prevalence of Reed-Solomon codes, a fundamental question in coding theory is determining if Reed--Solomon codes can optimally achieve list-decoding capacity. A recent breakthrough by Brakensiek, Gopi, and Makam, established that Reed--Solomon codes are combinatorially list-decodable all the way to capacity. However, their results hold for randomly-punctured Reed--Solomon codes over an exponentially large field size $2^{O(n)}$, where $n$ is the block length of the code. A natural question is whether Reed--Solomon codes can still achieve capacity over smaller fields. Recently, Guo and Zhang showed that Reed--Solomon codes are list-decodable to capacity with field size $O(n^2)$. We show that Reed--Solomon codes are list-decodable to capacity with linear field size $O(n)$, which is optimal up to the constant factor. We also give evidence that the ratio between the alphabet size $q$ and code length $n$ cannot be bounded by an absolute constant. Our techniques also show that random linear codes are list-decodable up to (the alphabet-independent) capacity with optimal list-size $O(1/\varepsilon)$ and near-optimal alphabet size $2^{O(1/\varepsilon^2)}$, where $\varepsilon$ is the gap to capacity. As far as we are aware, list-decoding up to capacity with optimal list-size $O(1/\varepsilon)$ was previously not known to be achievable with any linear code over a constant alphabet size (even non-constructively). Our proofs are based on the ideas of Guo and Zhang, and we additionally exploit symmetries of reduced intersection matrices.

Reverse engineering of FPGA based designs from the flattened LUT level netlist to high level RTL helps in verification of the design or in understanding legacy designs. We focus on flattened netlists for FPGA devices from Xilinx 7 series and Zynq 7000. We propose a design element grouping algorithm that makes use of the location information of the elements on the physical device after place and route. The proposed grouping algorithm gives clusters with average NMI of 0.73 for groupings including all element types. Reverse engineering of FPGA designs from bitstreams to RTL models aids in understanding the high level functionality of the design and for validating and reconstructing legacy designs. Fast carry-chains are commonly used in synthesis of operators in FPGA designs. We propose a method to detect word-level structures by analyzing these carry-chains in LUT (Look-Up Table) level netlists. We also present methods to adapt existing techniques to identify combinational operations and sequential modules in ASIC netlists to LUT netlists. All developed and adapted techniques are consolidated into an integrated tool-chain to aid in reverse engineering of word-level designs from LUT-level netlists. Downlink massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) precoding algorithms in frequency division duplexing (FDD) systems rely on accurate channel state information (CSI) feedback from users. In this paper, we analyze the tradeoff between the CSI feedback overhead and the performance achieved by the users in systems in terms of achievable rate. The final goal of the proposed system is to determine the beamforming information (i.e., precoding) from channel realizations. We employ a deep learning-based approach to design the end-to-end precoding-oriented feedback architecture, that includes learned pilots, users' compressors, and base station processing. We propose a loss function that maximizes the sum of achievable rates with minimal feedback overhead. Simulation results show that our approach outperforms previous precoding-oriented methods, and provides more efficient solutions with respect to conventional methods that separate the CSI compression blocks from the precoding processing., Comment: 6 pages, IEEE ICC 2023
