Materials with chiral electronic structures are of great interest. We report a triazatruxene, TAT, molecular semiconductor with chiral alkyl side chains that crystallises from solution to form chirally-stacked columns with a helical pitch of 6 TATs (2.3 nm). These crystals show strong circularly polarised, CP, green photoluminescence, with dissymmetry of 24%. Electronic structure calculations using the full crystal structure, show that this chiral stacking associates angular momentum to the valence and conduction states and thus gives rise to the observed CP luminescence. Free-standing crystals are not useful for active semiconductor devices, but we have discovered that co-sublimation of TAT as the guest in a structurally mismatched host enables the fabrication of thin films where the chiral crystallization is achieved in-situ by thermally-triggered nano-phase segregation of dopant and host whilst preserving the integrity of the film. This enables fabrication of bright (green) organic light-emitting diodes with unexpectedly high external quantum efficiencies of up to 16% and electroluminescence dissymmetries above 10%. These materials and this process method offer significant application potential in spintronics, optical displays and multidimensional optoelectronics.

A comparative vacuum ultraviolet spectroscopy study conducted at ISOLDE-CERN of the radiative decay of the $^{229m}$Th nuclear clock isomer embedded in different host materials is reported. The ratio of the number of radiative decay photons and the number of $^{229m}$Th embedded are determined for single crystalline CaF$_2$, MgF$_2$, LiSrAlF$_6$, AlN, and amorphous SiO$_2$. For the latter two materials, no radiative decay signal was observed and an upper limit of the ratio is reported. The radiative decay wavelength was determined in LiSrAlF$_6$ and CaF$_2$, reducing its uncertainty by a factor of 2.5 relative to our previous measurement. This value is in agreement with the recently reported improved values from laser excitation.

The adaptive immune response relies on T cells that combine phenotypic specialization with diversity of T cell receptors (TCRs) to recognize a wide range of pathogens. TCRs are acquired and selected during T cell maturation in the thymus. Characterizing TCR repertoires across individuals and T cell maturation stages is important for better understanding adaptive immune responses and for developing new diagnostics and therapies. Analyzing a dataset of human TCR repertoires from thymocyte subsets, we find that the variability between individuals generated during the TCR V(D)J recombination is maintained through all stages of T cell maturation and differentiation. The inter-individual variability of repertoires of the same cell type is of comparable magnitude to the variability across cell types within the same individual. To zoom in on smaller scales than whole repertoires, we defined a distance measuring the relative overlap of locally similar sequences in repertoires. We find that the whole repertoire models correctly predict local similarity networks, suggesting a lack of forbidden T cell receptor sequences. The local measure correlates well with distances calculated using whole repertoire traits and carries information about cell types.

We describe an effective procedure to compute the local subgroup zeta functions of the free class-$2$-nilpotent groups on $d$ generators, for all $d$. For $d=4$, this yields a new, explicit formula. For $d\in\{4,5\}$, we compute the topological subgroup zeta function. We also obtain general results about the reduced and topological subalgebra zeta functions. For the former, we determine the behaviour at one and for the latter, the degree and behaviours at zero and infinity. Understanding the mechanisms of magnetoelectric (ME) coupling within multiferroic structures is paramount from a fundamental as well as an applied point of view. We report here that the magnetoelectric properties, as well as the magnetization, of BaTiO$_3$-BiFeO$_3$ superlattices can be tuned by varying the BiFeO$_3$ layer thickness. The magnetoelectric voltage coefficient ($\alpha_{ME}$) reaches its maximum of 60.2 Vcm$^{-1}$Oe$^{-1}$ at 300 K, one of the highest values reported so far, for a sample with a BiFeO$_3$ thickness of 5 nm and a BaTiO$_3$ thickness of 10 nm. To gain deeper insight into the increased magnetoelectric coupling, and both the local and macroscopic magnetic properties, samples with varying BiFeO$_3$ thicknesses have been investigated. Correlations were established between the hyperfine field (HFF), the magnetoelectric voltage coefficient and the magnetization. The possible mechanisms responsible for the strong magnetoelectric coupling are discussed.

The nucleus of the radioisotope thorium-229 (${}^{229}$Th) features an isomer with an exceptionally low excitation energy that enables direct laser manipulation of nuclear states. For this reason, it is a leading candidate for use in next-generation optical clocks. This nuclear clock will be a unique tool, amongst others, for tests of fundamental physics. While first indirect experimental evidence for the existence of such an extraordinary nuclear state is significantly older, the proof of existence has been delivered only recently by observing the isomer's electron conversion decay and its hyperfine structure in a laser spectroscopy study, revealing information on the isomer's excitation energy, nuclear spin and electromagnetic moments. Further studies reported the electron conversion lifetime and refined the isomer's energy. In spite of recent progress, the isomer's radiative decay, a key ingredient for the development of a nuclear clock, remained unobserved. In this Letter, we report the detection of the radiative decay of this low-energy isomer in thorium-229 (${}^{229\mathrm{m}}$Th). By performing vacuum-ultraviolet spectroscopy of ${}^{229\mathrm{m}}$Th incorporated into large-bandgap CaF${}_2$ and MgF${}_2$ crystals at the ISOLDE facility at CERN, the photon vacuum wavelength of the isomer's decay is measured as 148.71(42) nm, corresponding to an excitation energy of 8.338(24) eV. This value is in agreement with recent measurements, and decreases the uncertainty by a factor of seven. The half-life of ${}^{229\mathrm{m}}$Th embedded in MgF${}_2$ is determined to be 670(102) s. The observation of the radiative decay in a large-bandgap crystal has important consequences for the design of a future nuclear clock and the improved uncertainty of the energy eases the search for direct laser excitation of the atomic nucleus.

We provide the first systematic characterization of the structural and photoluminescence properties of optically active defect centers fabricated upon implantation of 30-100 keV Mg+ ions in artificial diamond. The structural configurations of Mg-related defects were studied by the emission channeling technique for 27Mg implantations performed both at room-temperature and 800 {\deg}C, which allowed the identification of a major fraction of Mg atoms (~30-42%) in sites which are compatible with the split-vacancy structure of the MgV complex. A smaller fraction of Mg atoms (~13-17%) was found on substitutional sites. The photoluminescence emission was investigated both at the ensemble and individual defect level in a temperature range comprised between 5 K and 300 K, offering a detailed picture of the MgV-related emission properties and revealing the occurrence of previously unreported spectral features. The optical excitability of the MgV center was also studied as a function of the optical excitation wavelength enabling to identify the optimal conditions for photostable and intense emission. The results are discussed in the context of the preliminary experimental data and the theoretical models available in the literature, with appealing perspectives for the utilization of the tunable properties of the MgV center for quantum information processing applications., Comment: 7 figures

The influence of a patterned substrate on obliquely deposited, exchange biased Co/CoO films was studied. It was found that substrates decorated with nanoparticle patterns provide the option to manipulate the orientation of the magnetic easy axis in obliquely deposited thin films. The complementary methods of SQUID magnetometry and polarized neutron reflectometry were used to disentangle the different contributions to the magnetic hysteresis of such complex magnetic systems.

With an estimated diameter in the 320 to 350 km range, (704) Interamnia is the fifth largest main belt asteroid and one of the few bodies that fills the gap in size between the four largest bodies with $D$ > 400 km (Ceres, Vesta, Pallas and Hygiea) and the numerous smaller bodies with $D$ $\lesssim$ 200 km. However, despite its large size, little is known about the shape and spin state of Interamnia and, therefore, about its bulk composition and past collisional evolution. We aimed to test at what size and mass the shape of a small body departs from a nearly ellipsoidal equilibrium shape (as observed in the case of the four largest asteroids) to an irregular shape as routinely observed in the case of smaller ($D$ $\lesssim$ 200 km) bodies. We observed Interamnia as part of our ESO VLT/SPHERE large program (ID: 199.C-0074) at thirteen different epochs. In addition, several new optical lightcurves were recorded. These data, along with stellar occultation data from the literature, were fed to the All-Data Asteroid Modeling (ADAM) algorithm to reconstruct the 3D-shape model of Interamnia and to determine its spin state. Interamnia's volume-equivalent diameter of 332 $\pm$ 6 km implies a bulk density of $\rho$=1.98 $\pm$ 0.68 gcm$^{-3}$ , which suggests that Interamnia - like Ceres and Hygiea - contains a high fraction of water ice, consistent with the paucity of apparent craters. Our observations reveal a shape that can be well approximated by an ellipsoid, and that is compatible with a fluid hydrostatic equilibrium at the 2 $\sigma$ level. The rather regular shape of Interamnia implies that the size and mass limit, under which the shapes of minor bodies with a high amount of water ice in the subsurface become irregular, has to be searched among smaller ($D$ $\lesssim$ 300km) less massive ($m$ $\lesssim$ 3x10$^{19}$ kg) bodies., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

A new approach to observe the radiative decay of the $^{229}$Th nuclear isomer, and to determine its energy and radiative lifetime, is presented. Situated at a uniquely low excitation energy, this nuclear state might be a key ingredient for the development of a nuclear clock, a nuclear laser and the search for time variations of the fundamental constants. The isomer's $\gamma$ decay towards the ground state will be studied with a high-resolution VUV spectrometer after its production by the $\beta$ decay of $^{229}$Ac. The novel production method presents a number of advantages asserting its competitive nature with respect to the commonly used $^{233}$U $\alpha$-decay recoil source. In this paper, a feasibility analysis of this new concept, and an experimental investigation of its key ingredients, using a pure $^{229}$Ac ion beam produced at the ISOLDE radioactive beam facility, is reported., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables

Two-level systems (TLS) in amorphous materials limit coherence times of a number of solid-state quantum devices. Interactions between TLS become prominent below 100 mK, but the coupling mechanism and statistical properties are still unclear. Here we determine the homogeneous linewidth of ytterbium ions (Yb$ ^{3+} $) in silica glass at 10-80 mK by using photon echo techniques as a probe of TLS. First, the homogeneous linewidth can be reduced by applying a magnetic field of 0.3 T. This effect is due to reduced magnetic interactions between adjacent Yb$ ^{3+} $. Secondly, we observe saturation of the linewidth below 50 mK to a level of approximately 30 kHz, which is much larger than the lifetime-limited value of 0.2 kHz. This saturation behavior is in conflict with the coupling to independent TLS. We show that this effect can be explained by coherently coupled TLS.

We report on the epitaxial growth and the characterization of thin FePt films and the subsequent patterning of magnetic lattice structures. These structures can be used to trap ultracold atoms for quantum simulation experiments. We use Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) to deposit monocrystalline FePt films with a thickness of 50 nm. The films are characterized with X-ray scattering and Mossbauer spectroscopy to determine the long range order parameter and the hard magnetic axes. A high monocrystalline fraction was measured as well as a strong remanent magnetization of M = 900 kA/m and coercivity of 0.4 T. Using Electron Beam Lithography (EBL) and argon ion milling we create lattice patterns with a period down to 200 nm, and a resolution of 30 nm. The resulting lattices are imaged in a Scanning Electron Microscope in cross-section created by a Focused Ion Beam. A lattice with continuously varying lattice constant ranging from 5 micrometer down to 250nm has been created to show the wide range of length scales that can now be created with this technique., Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures

The structure, magnetic properties, and lattice dynamics of ordered Fe-Pt alloys with three stoichiometric compositions, Fe$_3$Pt, FePt and FePt$_3$, have been investigated using the density functional theory. Additionally, the existing experimental data have been complemented by new measurements of the Fe projected phonon density of states performed for the Fe$_3$Pt and FePt$_3$ thin films using the nuclear inelastic scattering technique. The calculated phonon dispersion relations and phonon density of states have been compared with the experimental data. The dispersion curves are very well reproduced by the calculations, although, the softening of the transversal acoustic mode TA$_1$ leads to some discrepancy between the theory and experiment in Fe$_3$Pt. A very goood agreement between the measured spectra and calculations performed for the tetragonal structure derived from the soft mode may signal that the tetragonal phase with the space group $P4/mbm$ plays an important role in the martensitic transformation observed in Fe$_3$Pt. For FePt$_3$, the antiferromagnetic order appearing with decreasing temperature has been also investigated. With the aim of investigating the possible integration of opto-electronic devices, epitaxial GaN layers have been grown on Si(111) SOI and on Si/CoSi2/Si(111) using metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. The samples are found to possess a highly oriented wurtzite structure, a uniform thickness and abrupt interfaces. The epitaxial orientation is determined as GaN(0001)//Si(111), GaN[1120]//Si[110] and GaN[1010]//Si[112], and the GaN layer is tensily strained in the direction parallel to the interface. According to Rutherford backscattering/channeling spectrometry and (0002) rocking curves, the crystalline quality of GaN on Si(111) SOI is better than that of GaN on silicide. Room-temperature photoluminescence of GaN/SOI reveals a strong near-bandedge emission at 368 nm (3.37 eV) with an FWHM of 59 meV., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures
