The paper presents a vision-based obstacle avoidance strategy for lightweight self-driving cars that can be run on a CPU-only device using a single RGB-D camera. The method consists of two steps: visual perception and path planning. The visual perception part uses ORBSLAM3 enhanced with optical flow to estimate the car's poses and extract rich texture information from the scene. In the path planning phase, we employ a method combining a control Lyapunov function and control barrier function in the form of quadratic program (CLF-CBF-QP) together with an obstacle shape reconstruction process (SRP) to plan safe and stable trajectories. To validate the performance and robustness of the proposed method, simulation experiments were conducted with a car in various complex indoor environments using the Gazebo simulation environment. Our method can effectively avoid obstacles in the scenes. Safety and efficiency are crucial for autonomous driving in roundabouts, especially in the context of mixed traffic where autonomous vehicles (AVs) and human-driven vehicles coexist. This paper introduces a learning-based algorithm tailored to foster safe and efficient driving behaviors across varying levels of traffic flows in roundabouts. The proposed algorithm employs a deep Q-learning network to effectively learn safe and efficient driving strategies in complex multi-vehicle roundabouts. Additionally, a KAN (Kolmogorov-Arnold network) enhances the AVs' ability to learn their surroundings robustly and precisely. An action inspector is integrated to replace dangerous actions to avoid collisions when the AV interacts with the environment, and a route planner is proposed to enhance the driving efficiency and safety of the AVs. Moreover, a model predictive control is adopted to ensure stability and precision of the driving actions. The results show that our proposed system consistently achieves safe and efficient driving whilst maintaining a stable training process, as evidenced by the smooth convergence of the reward function and the low variance in the training curves across various traffic flows. The key challenge of cross-modal domain-incremental learning (DIL) is to enable the learning model to continuously learn from novel data with different feature distributions under the same task without forgetting old ones. However, existing top-performing methods still cause high forgetting rates, by lacking intra-domain knowledge extraction and inter-domain common prompting strategy. In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective framework, CP-Prompt, by training limited parameters to instruct a pre-trained model to learn new domains and avoid forgetting existing feature distributions. CP-Prompt captures intra-domain knowledge by compositionally inserting personalized prompts on multi-head self-attention layers and then learns the inter-domain knowledge with a common prompting strategy. CP-Prompt shows superiority compared with state-of-the-art baselines among three widely evaluated DIL tasks. Contribution evaluation in federated learning (FL) has become a pivotal research area due to its applicability across various domains, such as detecting low-quality datasets, enhancing model robustness, and designing incentive mechanisms. Existing contribution evaluation methods, which primarily rely on data volume, model similarity, and auxiliary test datasets, have shown success in diverse scenarios. However, their effectiveness often diminishes due to the heterogeneity of data distributions, presenting a significant challenge to their applicability. In response, this paper explores contribution evaluation in FL from an entirely new perspective of representation. In this work, we propose a new method for the contribution evaluation of heterogeneous participants in federated learning (FLCE), which introduces a novel indicator \emph{class contribution momentum} to conduct refined contribution evaluation. Our core idea is the construction and application of the class contribution momentum indicator from individual, relative, and holistic perspectives, thereby achieving an effective and efficient contribution evaluation of heterogeneous participants without relying on an auxiliary test dataset. Extensive experimental results demonstrate the superiority of our method in terms of fidelity, effectiveness, efficiency, and heterogeneity across various scenarios.

Transformer-based large language models (LLMs) typically have a limited context window, resulting in significant performance degradation when processing text beyond the length of the context window. Extensive studies have been proposed to extend the context window and achieve length extrapolation of LLMs, but there is still a lack of in-depth interpretation of these approaches. In this study, we explore the positional information within and beyond the context window for deciphering the underlying mechanism of LLMs. By using a mean-based decomposition method, we disentangle positional vectors from hidden states of LLMs and analyze their formation and effect on attention. Furthermore, when texts exceed the context window, we analyze the change of positional vectors in two settings, i.e., direct extrapolation and context window extension. Based on our findings, we design two training-free context window extension methods, positional vector replacement and attention window extension. Experimental results show that our methods can effectively extend the context window length.

This study aims to develop a digital twin (DT) framework to enhance adaptive proton stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) for prostate cancer. Prostate SBRT has emerged as a leading option for external beam radiotherapy due to its effectiveness and reduced treatment duration. However, interfractional anatomy variations can impact treatment outcomes. This study seeks to address these uncertainties using DT concept, with the goal of improving treatment quality, potentially revolutionizing prostate radiotherapy to offer personalized treatment solutions. Our study presented a pioneering approach that leverages DT technology to enhance adaptive proton SBRT. The framework improves treatment plans by utilizing patient-specific CTV setup uncertainty, which is usually smaller than conventional clinical setups. This research contributes to the ongoing efforts to enhance the efficiency and efficacy of prostate radiotherapy, with ultimate goals of improving patient outcomes and life quality.

To capture user preference, transformer models have been widely applied to model sequential user behavior data. The core of transformer architecture lies in the self-attention mechanism, which computes the pairwise attention scores in a sequence. Due to the permutation-equivariant nature, positional encoding is used to enhance the attention between token representations. In this setting, the pairwise attention scores can be derived by both semantic difference and positional difference. However, prior studies often model the two kinds of difference measurements in different ways, which potentially limits the expressive capacity of sequence modeling. To address this issue, this paper proposes a novel transformer variant with complex vector attention, named EulerFormer, which provides a unified theoretical framework to formulate both semantic difference and positional difference. The EulerFormer involves two key technical improvements. First, it employs a new transformation function for efficiently transforming the sequence tokens into polar-form complex vectors using Euler's formula, enabling the unified modeling of both semantic and positional information in a complex rotation form.Secondly, it develops a differential rotation mechanism, where the semantic rotation angles can be controlled by an adaptation function, enabling the adaptive integration of the semantic and positional information according to the semantic contexts.Furthermore, a phase contrastive learning task is proposed to improve the isotropy of contextual representations in EulerFormer. Our theoretical framework possesses a high degree of completeness and generality. It is more robust to semantic variations and possesses moresuperior theoretical properties in principle. With the rapid development of recommender systems, there is increasing side information that can be employed to improve the recommendation performance. Specially, we focus on the utilization of the associated \emph{textual data} of items (eg product title) and study how text features can be effectively fused with ID features in sequential recommendation. However, there exists distinct data characteristics for the two kinds of item features, making a direct fusion method (eg adding text and ID embeddings as item representation) become less effective. To address this issue, we propose a novel {\ul \emph{Te}}xt-I{\ul \emph{D}} semantic fusion approach for sequential {\ul \emph{Rec}}ommendation, namely \textbf{\our}. The core idea of our approach is to conduct a sequence-level semantic fusion approach by better integrating global contexts. The key strategy lies in that we transform the text embeddings and ID embeddings by Fourier Transform from \emph{time domain} to \emph{frequency domain}. In the frequency domain, the global sequential characteristics of the original sequences are inherently aggregated into the transformed representations, so that we can employ simple multiplicative operations to effectively fuse the two kinds of item features. Our fusion approach can be proved to have the same effects of contextual convolution, so as to achieving sequence-level semantic fusion. In order to further improve the fusion performance, we propose to enhance the discriminability of the text embeddings from the text encoder, by adaptively injecting positional information via a mixture-of-experts~(MoE) modulation method. Dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) is a promising technology that has shown a number of clinical advantages over conventional X-ray CT, such as improved material identification, artifact suppression, etc. For proton therapy treatment planning, besides material-selective images, maps of effective atomic number (Z) and relative electron density to that of water ($\rho_e$) can also be achieved and further employed to improve stopping power ratio accuracy and reduce range uncertainty. In this work, we propose a one-step iterative estimation method, which employs multi-domain gradient $L_0$-norm minimization, for Z and $\rho_e$ maps reconstruction. The algorithm was implemented on GPU to accelerate the predictive procedure and to support potential real-time adaptive treatment planning. The performance of the proposed method is demonstrated via both phantom and patient studies.

Learning effective high-order feature interactions is very crucial in the CTR prediction task. However, it is very time-consuming to calculate high-order feature interactions with massive features in online e-commerce platforms. Most existing methods manually design a maximal order and further filter out the useless interactions from them. Although they reduce the high computational costs caused by the exponential growth of high-order feature combinations, they still suffer from the degradation of model capability due to the suboptimal learning of the restricted feature orders. The solution to maintain the model capability and meanwhile keep it efficient is a technical challenge, which has not been adequately addressed. To address this issue, we propose an adaptive feature interaction learning model, named as EulerNet, in which the feature interactions are learned in a complex vector space by conducting space mapping according to Euler's formula. EulerNet converts the exponential powers of feature interactions into simple linear combinations of the modulus and phase of the complex features, making it possible to adaptively learn the high-order feature interactions in an efficient way. Furthermore, EulerNet incorporates the implicit and explicit feature interactions into a unified architecture, which achieves the mutual enhancement and largely boosts the model capabilities. Such a network can be fully learned from data, with no need of pre-designed form or order for feature interactions. RecBole has recently attracted increasing attention from the research community. As the increase of the number of users, we have received a number of suggestions and update requests. This motivates us to make some significant improvements on our library, so as to meet the user requirements and contribute to the research community. In order to show the recent update in RecBole, we write this technical report to introduce our latest improvements on RecBole. In general, we focus on the flexibility and efficiency of RecBole in the past few months. More specifically, we have four development targets: (1) more flexible data processing, (2) more efficient model training, (3) more reproducible configurations, and (4) more comprehensive user documentation. With the growth of high-dimensional sparse data in web-scale recommender systems, the computational cost to learn high-order feature interaction in CTR prediction task largely increases, which limits the use of high-order interaction models in real industrial applications. Some recent knowledge distillation based methods transfer knowledge from complex teacher models to shallow student models for accelerating the online model inference. However, they suffer from the degradation of model accuracy in knowledge distillation process. It is challenging to balance the efficiency and effectiveness of the shallow student models. To address this problem, we propose a Directed Acyclic Graph Factorization Machine (KD-DAGFM) to learn the high-order feature interactions from existing complex interaction models for CTR prediction via Knowledge Distillation. The proposed lightweight student model DAGFM can learn arbitrary explicit feature interactions from teacher networks, which achieves approximately lossless performance and is proved by a dynamic programming algorithm. Besides, an improved general model KD-DAGFM+ is shown to be effective in distilling both explicit and implicit feature interactions from any complex teacher model. Extensive experiments are conducted on four real-world datasets, including a large-scale industrial dataset from WeChat platform with billions of feature dimensions. KD-DAGFM achieves the best performance with less than 21.5% FLOPs of the state-of-the-art method on both online and offline experiments, showing the superiority of DAGFM to deal with the industrial scale data in CTR prediction task. Online adaptive proton therapy (APT) is an ideal solution theoretically, which however is challenging to proton clinics. Although multiple groups have been endeavoring to develop online APT technology, there is a concern in the radiotherapy community about the necessity of online APT because of its unknown impact on treatment outcomes. Hence, we have performed a retrospective study to investigate the potential clinical effects of online APT for HN cancer patients in relative to the current offline APT via simulations. To mimic an online APT treatment course, we have recalculated and evaluated the actual dose of the current treatment plan on patient actual treatment anatomy captured by cone beam CT for each fraction. The cumulative dose of simulated online APT courses was compared to actual offline APT courses and the initially designed treatment plan dose. For patients 1 and 2, the simulated online ART course maintained a relatively higher CTV dose coverages than the offline ART course, particularly for CTV-Low, which led to an improvement of 2.66% and 4.52% in TCP of CTV-Low. For patients 3 and 4, with clinically comparable CTV dose coverages, the simulated online ART course achieved better OAR sparing than the offline ART course. The mean doses of right parotid and oral cavity were decreased from 29.52 Gy relative biological effectiveness (RBE) and 41.89 Gy RBE to 22.16 Gy RBE and 34.61 Gy RBE for patient 3, leading to a reduce of 1.67% and 3.40% in NTCP for the two organs. Compared to the current clinical practice, the retrospective study indicated that online APT tended to spare more normal tissues by achieving the clinical goal with merely half of the positional uncertainty margin. Future studies are needed to help identify the patients with large potential benefits prior to treatment to conserve scarce clinical resources.

This study proposed a deep learning-based tracking method for ultrasound (US) image-guided radiation therapy. The proposed cascade deep learning model is composed of an attention network, a mask region-based convolutional neural network (mask R-CNN), and a long short-term memory (LSTM) network. The attention network learns a mapping from a US image to a suspected area of landmark motion in order to reduce the search region. The mask R-CNN then produces multiple region-of-interest (ROI) proposals in the reduced region and identifies the proposed landmark via three network heads: bounding box regression, proposal classification, and landmark segmentation. The LSTM network models the temporal relationship among the successive image frames for bounding box regression and proposal classification. To consolidate the final proposal, a selection method is designed according to the similarities between sequential frames. The proposed method was tested on the liver US tracking datasets used in the Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Interventions (MICCAI) 2015 challenges, where the landmarks were annotated by three experienced observers to obtain their mean positions. Five-fold cross-validation on the 24 given US sequences with ground truths shows that the mean tracking error for all landmarks is 0.65+/-0.56 mm, and the errors of all landmarks are within 2 mm. We further tested the proposed model on 69 landmarks from the testing dataset that has a similar image pattern to the training pattern, resulting in a mean tracking error of 0.94+/-0.83 mm. Our experimental results have demonstrated the feasibility and accuracy of our proposed method in tracking liver anatomic landmarks using US images, providing a potential solution for real-time liver tracking for active motion management during radiation therapy.

In order to support the study of recent advances in recommender systems, this paper presents an extended recommendation library consisting of eight packages for up-to-date topics and architectures. First of all, from a data perspective, we consider three important topics related to data issues (i.e., sparsity, bias and distribution shift), and develop five packages accordingly: meta-learning, data augmentation, debiasing, fairness and cross-domain recommendation. Furthermore, from a model perspective, we develop two benchmarking packages for Transformer-based and graph neural network (GNN)-based models, respectively. All the packages (consisting of 65 new models) are developed based on a popular recommendation framework RecBole, ensuring that both the implementation and interface are unified. For each package, we provide complete implementations from data loading, experimental setup, evaluation and algorithm implementation. This library provides a valuable resource to facilitate the up-to-date research in recommender systems. Non-Abelian braiding has attracted significant attention because of its pivotal role in describing the exchange behaviors of anyons--a candidate for realizing quantum logics. The input and outcome of non-Abelian braiding are connected by a unitary matrix which can also physically emerge as a geometric-phase matrix in classical systems. Hence it is predicted that non-Abelian braiding should have analogues in photonics, but a feasible platform and the experimental realization remain out of reach. Here, we propose and experimentally realize an on-chip photonic system that achieves the non-Abelian braiding of up to five photonic modes. The braiding is realized by controlling the multi-mode geometric-phase matrix in judiciously designed photonic waveguide arrays. The quintessential effect of braiding--sequence-dependent swapping of photon dwell sites is observed in both classical-light and single-photon experiments. Our photonic chips are a versatile and expandable platform for studying non-Abelian physics, and we expect the results to motivate next-gen non-Abelian photonic devices., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Purpose: Several inverse planning algorithms have been developed for Gamma Knife (GK) radiosurgery to determine a large number of plan parameters via solving an optimization problem, which typically consists of multiple objectives. The priorities among these objectives need to be repetitively adjusted to achieve a clinically good plan for each patient. This study aimed to achieve automatic and intelligent priority-tuning, by developing a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) based method to model the tuning behaviors of human planners. Methods: We built a priority-tuning policy network using deep convolutional neural networks. Its input was a vector composed of the plan metrics that were used in our institution for GK plan evaluation. The network can determine which tuning action to take, based on the observed quality of the intermediate plan. We trained the network using an end-to-end DRL framework to approximate the optimal action-value function. A scoring function was designed to measure the plan quality. Results: Vestibular schwannoma was chosen as the test bed in this study. The number of training, validation and testing cases were 5, 5, and 16, respectively. For these three datasets, the average plan scores with initial priorities were 3.63 $\pm$ 1.34, 3.83 $\pm$ 0.86 and 4.20 $\pm$ 0.78, respectively, while can be improved to 5.28 $\pm$ 0.23, 4.97 $\pm$ 0.44 and 5.22 $\pm$ 0.26 through manual priority tuning by human expert planners. Our network achieved competitive results with 5.42 $\pm$ 0.11, 5.10 $\pm$ 0. 42, 5.28 $\pm$ 0.20, respectively. Conclusions: Our network can generate GK plans of comparable or slightly higher quality comparing with the plans generated by human planners via manual priority tuning. The network can potentially be incorporated into the clinical workflow to improve GK planning efficiency.

Boson Sampling is a computational paradigm representing one of the most viable and pursued approaches to demonstrate the regime of quantum advantage. Recent results have demonstrated significant technological leaps in single-photon generation and detection, leading to progressively larger experimental instances of Boson Sampling experiments in different photonic systems. However, a crucial requirement for a fully-fledged platform solving this problem is the capability of implementing large-scale interferometers, that must simultaneously exhibit low losses, high degree of reconfigurability and the realization of arbitrary transformations. In this work, we move a step forward in this direction by demonstrating the adoption of a compact and reconfigurable 3D-integrated platform for photonic Boson Sampling. We perform 3- and 4-photon experiments by using such platform, showing the possibility of programming the circuit to implement a large number of unitary transformations. These results show that such compact and highly-reconfigurable layout can be scaled up to experiments with larger number of photons and modes, and can provide a viable direction for hybrid computing with photonic processors., Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures

With many variables to adjust, conventional manual forward planning for Gamma Knife (GK) radiosurgery is very complicated and cumbersome. The resulting plan quality heavily depends on planners skills, experiences and devoted efforts, and varies significantly among cases, planners, and institutions. Quality control for GK planning is desired to consistently provide high-quality plan to each patient. In this study, we proposed a quality control method for GK planning by building a database of high-quality GK plans. Patient anatomy was described by target volume, target shape complexity, and spatial relationship between target and nearby organs, which determine GK planning difficulty level. Plan quality was evaluated using target coverage, selectivity, intermediate dose spillage, maximum dose to 0.1 cc of brainstem, mean dose of ipsilateral cochlea, and beam-on time. When a new plan is created, a high-quality plan that has the most similar target volume size and shape complexity will be identified from the database. A model has also been built to predict the dose to brainstem and cochlea based on their overlap volume histograms. The identified reference plan and the predicted organ dose will help planners to make quality control decisions accordingly. To validate this method, we have built a database for vestibular schwannoma, which are considered to be challenging for GK planning due to the irregularly-shaped target and its proximity to brainstem and cochlea. Five cases were tested, among which one case was considered to be of high quality and four cases had a lower plan quality than prediction. These four cases were replanned and got substantially improved. Our results have demonstrated the efficacy of our proposed quality control method. This method may also be used as a plan quality prediction method to facilitate the development of automatic treatment planning for GK radiosurgery.

Due to the complexity and cumbersomeness of Gamma Knife (GK) manual forward planning, the quality of the resulting treatment plans heavily depends on the planners skill, experience and the amount of effort devoted to plan development. Hence, GK plan quality may vary significantly among institutions and planners, and even for a same planner at different cases. This is particularly a concern for challenging cases with complicated geometry, such as vestibular schwannoma cases. The purpose of this retrospective study is to investigate the plan quality and variation in the manually forward planned, clinically acceptable GK treatment plans of 22 previous vestibular schwannoma cases. Considering the impacts of different patient geometry and different trade-offs among the planning objectives in GK planning, it is difficult to objectively assess the plan quality across different cases. To reduce these confounding factors on plan quality assessment, we employed our recently developed multiresolution-level inverse planning algorithm to generate a golden plan for each case, which is expected to be on or close to the pareto surface with a similar trade-off as used in the manual plan. The plan quality of the manual plan is then quantified in terms of its deviation from the golden plan. A scoring criterion between 0-100 was designed to calculate a final score for each manual plan to simplify our analysis. Large quality variation was observed in these 22 cases, with two cases having a score lower than 75, three cases scoring between 80 and 85, two cases between 85 and 90, eight cases between 90 and 95, and seven cases higher than 95. Inter- and intra- planner variability was also observed in our study. This large variation in GK manual planning deserves high attention, and merits further investigation on how to reduce the variation in GK treatment plan quality.

Due to the inter- and intra- variation of respiratory motion, it is highly desired to provide real-time volumetric images during the treatment delivery of lung stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) for accurate and active motion management. In this proof-of-concept study, we propose a novel generative adversarial network integrated with perceptual supervision to derive instantaneous volumetric images from a single 2D projection. Our proposed network, named TransNet, consists of three modules, i.e., encoding, transformation and decoding modules. Rather than only using image distance loss between the generated 3D images and the ground truth 3D CT images to supervise the network, perceptual loss in feature space is integrated into loss function to force the TransNet to yield accurate lung boundary. Adversarial supervision is also used to improve the realism of generated 3D images. We conducted a simulation study on 20 patient cases, who had received lung SBRT treatments in our institution and undergone 4D-CT simulation, and evaluated the efficacy and consistency of our method for four different projection angles, i.e., 0, 30, 60 and 90 degree. For each 3D CT image set of a breathing phase, we simulated its 2D projections at these angles.Then for each projection angle, a patient's 3D CT images of 9 phases and the corresponding 2D projection data were used for training, with the remaining phase used for testing. The mean absolute error, normalized MAE, peak signal-to-noise ratio and structural similarity index metric achieved by our method are 99.3 HU, 0.032, 23.4 dB and 0.949, respectively. These results demonstrate the feasibility and efficacy of our 2D-to-3D method for lung cancer patients, which provides a potential solution for in-treatment real-time on-board volumetric imaging for accurate dose delivery to ensure the effectiveness of lung SBRT treatment.

Solar system materials are variably depleted in moderately volatile elements (MVEs) relative to the proto-solar composition. To address the origin of this MVE depletion, we conducted a systematic study of high-precision K isotopic composition on 16 carbonaceous chondrites (CCs) of types CM1-2, CO3, CV3, CR2, CK4-5 and CH3 and 28 ordinary chondrites (OCs) covering petrological types 3 to 6 and chemical groups H, L, and LL. We observed significant overall K isotope (delta41K) variations (-1.54 to 0.70 permil). The K isotope compositions of CCs are largely higher than the Bulk Silicate Earth (BSE) value, whereas OCs show typically lower values than BSE. Neither CCs nor OCs show resolvable correlations between K isotopes and chemical groups, petrological types, shock levels, exposure ages, fall or find occurrence, or terrestrial weathering. The lack of a clear trend between K isotopes and K content indicates that the K isotope fractionations were decoupled from the relative elemental K depletions. The range of K isotope variations in the CCs is consistent with a four-component (chondrule, refractory inclusion, matrix and water) mixing model that is able to explain the bulk elemental and isotopic compositions of the main CC groups, but requires a fractionation in K isotopic compositions in chondrules. We propose that the major control of the isotopic compositions of group averages is condensation or vaporization in nebular environments that is preserved in the compositional variation of chondrules. Parent-body processes (aqueous alteration, thermal metamorphism, and metasomatism) can mobilize K and affect the K isotopes in individual samples. In the case of the OCs, the full range of K isotopic variations can only be explained by the combined effects of the size and relative abundances of chondrules, parent-body aqueous and thermal alteration., Comment: 71 pages, 2 tables, 9 figures

Enstatite chondrites and aubrites are meteorites that show the closest similarities to the Earth in many isotope systems that undergo mass-independent and mass-dependent isotope fractionations. Due to the analytical challenges to obtain high-precision K isotopic compositions in the past, potential differences in K isotopic compositions between enstatite meteorites and the Earth remained uncertain. We report the first high-precision K isotopic compositions of eight enstatite chondrites and four aubrites and find that there is a significant variation of K isotopic compositions among enstatite meteorites (from -2.34 permil to -0.18 permil). However, K isotopic compositions of nearly all enstatite meteorites scatter around the Bulk Silicate Earth (BSE) value. The average K isotopic composition of the eight enstatite chondrites (-0.47 +/- 0.57 permil) is indistinguishable from the BSE value (-0.48 +/- 0.03 permil), thus further corroborating the isotopic similarity between Earth' building blocks and enstatite meteorite precursors. We found no correlation of K isotopic compositions with the chemical groups, petrological types, shock degrees, and terrestrial weathering conditions; however, the variation of K isotopes among enstatite meteorite can be attributed to the parent body processing. Our sample of the main group aubrite MIL 13004 is exceptional and has an extremely light K isotopic composition (delta 41K= -2.34 +/- 0.12 permil). We attribute this unique K isotopic feature to the presence of abundant djerfisherite inclusions in our sample because this K-bearing sulfide mineral is predicted to be enriched in 39K during equilibrium exchange with silicates., Comment: 46 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables, published in Meteoritics & Planetary Science

Stacking order has strong influence on the coupling between the two layers of twisted bilayer graphene (BLG), which in turn determines its physical properties. Here, we report the investigation of the interlayer coupling of the epitaxially grown single-crystal 30{\deg} twisted BLG on Cu(111) at the atomic scale. The stacking order and morphology of BLG is controlled by a rationally designed two-step growth process, that is, the thermodynamically controlled nucleation and kinetically controlled growth. The crystal structure of the 30{\deg}-twisted bilayer graphene (30{\deg}-tBLG) is determined to have the quasicrystal like symmetry. The electronic properties and interlayer coupling of the 30{\deg}-tBLG is investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS). The energy-dependent local density of states (DOS) with in-situ electrostatic doping shows that the electronic states in two graphene layers are decoupled near the Dirac point. A linear dispersion originated from the constituent graphene monolayers is discovered with doubled degeneracy. This study contributes to controlled growth of twist-angle-defined BLG, and provides insights of the electronic properties and interlayer coupling in this intriguing system., Comment: 26 pages, 4 figures

Manual forward planning for GK radiosurgery is complicated and time-consuming, particularly for cases with large or irregularly shaped targets. Inverse planning eases GK planning by solving an optimization problem. However, due to the vast search space, most inverse planning algorithms have to decouple the planning process to isocenter preselection and sector duration optimization. This sequential scheme does not necessarily lead to optimal isocenter locations and hence optimal plans. In this study, we attempt to optimize the isocenter positions, beam shapes and durations simultaneously by proposing a multi-resolution-level (MRL) strategy to handle the large-scale GK optimization problem. In our approach, several rounds of optimizations were performed with a progressively increased spatial resolution for isocenter candidate selection. The isocenters selected from last round and their neighbors on a finer resolution were used as new isocenter candidates for next round of optimization. After plan optimization, shot sequencing was performed to group the optimized sectors to deliverable shots supported by GK treatment units. We have tested our algorithm on 6 GK cases previously treated in our institution (2 meningioma cases, 3 cases with single metastasis and 1 case with 6 metastases). Compared with manual planning, achieving same coverage and similar selectivity, our algorithm improved the gradient index averagely from 3.1 to 2.9 and reduced the maximum dose of brainstem from 8.0Gy to 5.6Gy. The average beam-on time was also reduced by from 103.8 mins to 87.4 mins. Our method was also compared with the inverse planning algorithm provided in Leksell GammaPlan planning system, and outperformed it with better plan quality for all the 6 cases.This preliminary study has demonstrated the effectiveness and feasibility of our MRL inverse planning approach for GK radiosurgery.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials with narrow band gaps (~0.3 eV) are of great importance for realizing ambipolar transistors and mid-infrared (MIR) detection. However, most of the 2D materials studied so far have band gaps that are too large. A few of them with suitable band gaps are not stable under ambient conditions. In this study, the layered Nb$_{2}$SiTe$_{4}$ is shown to be a stable 2D material with a band gap of 0.39 eV. Field-effect transistors based on few-layer Nb$_2$SiTe$_4$ show ambipolar transport with similar magnitude of electron and hole current and high charge-carrier mobility of ~ 100 cm$^{2}$V$^{-1}$s$^{-1}$ at room temperature. Optoelectronic measurements of the devices show clear response to MIR wavelength of 3.1 $\mathrm\mu$m with a high responsivity of ~ 0.66 AW$^{-1}$. These results establish Nb$_{2}$SiTe$_{4}$ as a good candidate for ambipolar devices and MIR detection., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

Black phosphorus has attracted great research interest due to its numerous applications in electronic devices, optoelectronic devices, energy storages and so on. Compared with the majority of two-dimensional materials, black phosphorus possesses a unique property, i.e. the strong in-plane anisotropy. All the properties reported so far, including its effective mass, electron mobility, light absorption, thermal conductivity and so on, have shown great anisotropy in the basal plane. This property renders black phosphorus unique applications not achievable with other two-dimensional materials. In this work, however, we discover a remarkable isotropic behavior in the strongly anisotropic black phosphorus, i.e. its electrostatic screening of point charges. We use the tip-induced band bending of a scanning tunneling microscope to map out the Coulomb field of ionized potassium adatoms on black phosphorus, and reveal its isotropic charge screening. The spatial-dependent propagation model has been successfully used to explain diverse observational phenomena, including the spectral hardening of cosmic-ray nuclei above $200$ GV, the large-scale dipole anisotropy and the diffusive gamma distribution. In this work, we further apply the spatial-dependent propagation model to both electrons and positrons. To account for the excess of positrons above $10$ GeV, an additional local source is introduced. And we also consider a more realistic spiral distribution of background sources. We find that due to the gradual hardening above $10$ GeV, the hardening of electron spectrum above tens of GeV can be explained in the SDP model and both positron and electron spectra less than TeV energies could be naturally described. The spatial-dependent propagation with spiral-distributed sources could conforms with the total electron spectrum in the whole energy. Meanwhile compared with the conventional model, the spatial-dependent propagation with spiral-distributed sources could produce larger background positron flux, so that the multiplier of background positron flux is $1.42$, which is much smaller than the required value by the conventional model. Thus the shortage of background positron flux could be solved. Furthermore we compute the anisotropy of electron under spatial-dependent propagation model, which is well below the observational limit of Fermi-LAT experiment.

Fast fabrication of micro-optical elements for generation of optical vortex beams based on the q-plate design is demonstrated by femtosecond (fs) laser ablation of gold film on glass. Q-plates with diameter of ~0.5 mm were made in ~1 min using galvanometric scanners with writing speed of 5 mm/s. Period of gratings of 0.8 micrometers and groove width of 250 nm were achieved using fs-laser ablation at 343 nm wavelength. Phase and intensity analysis of optical vortex generators was carried out at 633 nm wavelength and confirmed the designed performance. Efficiency of spin-orbital conversion of the q-plates made by ablation of 50-nm-thick film of gold was ~3%. Such gratings can withstand thermal annealing up to 800C. Recently, intriguing phenomena of superconductivity, type-II Weyl semimetal or quantum spin Hall states were discovered in metastable 1T'-type VIB-group transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Here, we report that monoclinic phase WS2 was discovered and synthesized in our experiments. The intrinsic superconducting transition was observed in monoclinic WS2 with a transition temperature Tc of 8.8 K which is the highest among previously reported TMDs without any fine-tuning process. Intersteing, topological insulator state, defined by topological invariant Z2, was also discovered with a single Dirac cone on the surface, which is different from all topological states reported in TMDs. Further, the electronic structure was found to have a strong anisotropy by Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations and first-principles calculations. Different two-dimensional materials, when combined together to form heterostructures, can exhibit exciting properties that do not exist in individual components. Therefore, intensive research efforts have been devoted to their fabrication and characterization. Previously, vertical and in-plane two-dimensional heterostructures have been formed by mechanical stacking and chemical vapor deposition. Here we report a new material system that can form in-plane p-n junctions by thermal conversion of n-type SnSe2 to p-type SnSe. Through scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory studies, we find that these two distinctively different lattices can form atomically sharp interfaces and have a type II to nearly type III band alignment. We also demonstrate that this method can be used to create micron sized in-plane p-n junctions at predefined locations. These findings pave the way for further exploration of the intriguing properties of the SnSe2-SnSe heterostructure., Comment: 30 pages, 6 figures

We study the anisotropic electronic properties of 2D SnS, an analogue of phosphorene, grown by physical vapor transport. With transmission electron microscope and polarized Raman spectroscopy, we identify the zigzag and armchair directions of the as-grown 2D crystals. 2D SnS field-effect transistors with a cross-Hall-bar structure are fabricated. They show heavily hole-doped (~10$^{19}$ cm$^{-3}$) conductivity with strong in-plane anisotropy. At room temperature the mobility along the zigzag direction exceeds 20 cm$^{2}$V$^{-1}$s$^{-1}$, which can be up to 1.7 times of that in the armchair direction. This strong anisotropy is then explained by the effective-mass ratio along the two directions and agrees well with previous theoretical predictions. Temperature-dependent carrier density is used to find out the acceptor energy level to be ~45 meV above the valence band maximum. This value matches with a calculated defect level of 42 meV for Sn vacancies, indicating that Sn deficiency is the main cause of the p-type conductivity., Comment: 27 pages, 6 figures

We report the transport properties of mechanically exfoliated few-layer SnSe$_{2}$ flakes, whose mobility is found with four probe measurements to be ~ 85 cm$^{2}$V$^{-1}$s$^{-1}$ at 300 K, higher than those of the majority of few-layer transitional metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). The mobility increases strongly with decreased temperature, indicating a phonon limited transport. The conductivity of the semiconducting SnSe$_{2}$ shows a metallic behavior, which is explained by two competing factors involving the different temperature dependence of mobility and carrier density. The Fermi level is found to be 87 meV below the conduction band minima (CBM) at 300 K and 12 meV below the CBM at 78 K, resulting from a heavy n-type doping. Previous studies have found SnSe$_{2}$ field-effect transistors (FETs) to be very difficult to turn off. We find the limiting factor to be the flake thickness compared with the maximum depletion width. With fully depleted devices, we are able to achieve a current on-off ratio of ~10$^{5}$. These results demonstrate the great potential of SnSe2 as a two dimensional (2D) semiconducting material and are helpful for our understanding of other heavily doped 2D materials., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

The multi-TeV $\gamma$-rays from the Galactic Center (GC) have a cutoff at tens of TeV, whereas the diffuse emission has no such cutoff, which is regarded as an indication of PeV proton acceleration by the HESS experiment. It is important to understand the inconsistency and study the possibility that PeV cosmic-ray acceleration could account for the apparently contradictory point and diffuse $\gamma$-ray spectra. In this work, we propose that the cosmic rays are accelerated up to $>$PeV in GC. The interaction between cosmic rays and molecular clouds is responsible for the multi-TeV $\gamma$-ray emissions from both the point source and diffuse sources today. Enhanced by the small volume filling factor (VFF) of the clumpy structure, the absorption of the $\gamma$-rays leads to a sharp cutoff spectrum at tens of TeV produced in the GC. Away from galactic center, the VFF grows and the absorption enhancement becomes negligible. As a result, the spectra of $\gamma$-ray emissions for both point source and diffuse sources can be successfully reproduced under such self-consistent picture. In addition, a "surviving-tail" at $\sim$100 TeV is expected from the point source, which can be observed by future projects CTA and LHAASO. Neutrinos are simultaneously produced during proton-proton (PP) collision. With 5-10 years observations, the KM3Net experiment will be able to detect the PeV source according to our calculation.

Recent precise measurements of cosmic ray spectral revealed an anomalous hardening at ~200 GV for nuclei from PAMELA, CREAM, ATIC, AMS02 experiments and at tens of GeV for primary electron derived from AMS02 experiment. Particularly, the latest observation of pbar/p ratio by AMS02 demonstrated a flat distribution, which further validated the spectrum anomalies of secondary particles. All those new phenomena indicated that the conventional propagation model of cosmic rays meet challenge. In this work, the spatial-dependent propagation coefficient D(r,z,\rho) is employed by tracing the source distribution under the physical picture of two-halo model in DRAGON package. Under such scenario, the model calculation will result in a two-component spectral for primary nuclei and electron. Simultaneously, due to the smaller rigidity dependence of D(r,z,\rho) in galactic disk, the ratio of secondary-to-primary will be inevitablly flatter than the calculation in the conventional propagation model. As a result, we can reproduce the spectral hardening of proton, electron and the flat ratio of pbar/p and B/C by only adopting the spatial-dependent propagation coefficient D(r,z,\rho) in galactic disk.

We recently built an analytical source model for GPU-based MC dose engine. In this paper, we present a sampling strategy to efficiently utilize this source model in GPU-based dose calculation. Our source model was based on a concept of phase-space-ring (PSR). This ring structure makes it effective to account for beam rotational symmetry, but not suitable for dose calculations due to rectangular jaw settings. Hence, we first convert PSR source model to its phase-space let (PSL) representation. Then in dose calculation, different types of sub-sources were separately sampled. Source sampling and particle transport were iterated. So that the particles being sampled and transported simultaneously are of same type and close in energy to alleviate GPU thread divergence. We also present an automatic commissioning approach to adjust the model for a good representation of a clinical linear accelerator . Weighting factors were introduced to adjust relative weights of PSRs, determined by solving a quadratic minimization problem with a non-negativity constraint. We tested the efficiency gain of our model over a previous source model using PSL files. The efficiency was improved by 1.70 ~ 4.41, due to the avoidance of long data reading and transferring. The commissioning problem can be solved in ~20 sec. Its efficacy was tested by comparing the doses computed using the commissioned model and the uncommissioned one, with measurements in different open fields in a water phantom under a clinical Varian Truebeam 6MV beam. For the depth dose curves, the average distance-to-agreement was improved from 0.04~0.28 cm to 0.04~0.12 cm for build-up region and the root-mean-square (RMS) dose difference after build-up region was reduced from 0.32%~0.67% to 0.21%~0.48%. For lateral dose profiles, RMS difference was reduced from 0.31%~2.0% to 0.06%~0.78% at inner beam and from 0.20%~1.25% to 0.10%~0.51% at outer beam., Comment: page line has been removed

VMAT optimization is a computationally challenging problem due to its large data size, high degrees of freedom, and many hardware constraints. High-performance graphics processing units have been used to speed up the computations. However, its small memory size cannot handle cases with a large dose-deposition coefficient (DDC) matrix. This paper is to report an implementation of our column-generation based VMAT algorithm on a multi-GPU platform to solve the memory limitation problem. The column-generation approach generates apertures sequentially by solving a pricing problem (PP) and a master problem (MP) iteratively. The DDC matrix is split into four sub-matrices according to beam angles, stored on four GPUs in compressed sparse row format. Computation of beamlet price is accomplished using multi-GPU. While the remaining steps of PP and MP problems are implemented on a single GPU due to their modest computational loads. A H&N patient case was used to validate our method. We compare our multi-GPU implementation with three single GPU implementation strategies: truncating DDC matrix (S1), repeatedly transferring DDC matrix between CPU and GPU (S2), and porting computations involving DDC matrix to CPU (S3). Two more H&N patient cases and three prostate cases were also used to demonstrate the advantages of our method. Our multi-GPU implementation can finish the optimization within ~1 minute for the H&N patient case. S1 leads to an inferior plan quality although its total time was 10 seconds shorter than the multi-GPU implementation. S2 and S3 yield same plan quality as the multi-GPU implementation but take ~4 minutes and ~6 minutes, respectively. High computational efficiency was consistently achieved for the other 5 cases. The results demonstrate that the multi-GPU implementation can handle the large-scale VMAT optimization problem efficiently without sacrificing plan quality., Comment: 23 pages, 3 figures, 3 tables

Monte Carlo (MC) simulation is considered as the most accurate method for radiation dose calculations. Accuracy of a source model for a linear accelerator is critical for the overall dose calculation accuracy. In this paper, we presented an analytical source model that we recently developed for GPU-based MC dose calculations. A key concept called phase-space-ring (PSR) was proposed. It contained a group of particles that are of the same type and close in energy and radial distance to the center of the phase-space plane. The model parameterized probability densities of particle location, direction and energy for each primary photon PSR, scattered photon PSR and electron PSR. For a primary photon PSRs, the particle direction is assumed to be from the beam spot. A finite spot size is modeled with a 2D Gaussian distribution. For a scattered photon PSR, multiple Gaussian components were used to model the particle direction. The direction distribution of an electron PSRs was also modeled as a 2D Gaussian distribution with a large standard deviation. We also developed a method to analyze a phase-space file and derive corresponding model parameters. To test the accuracy of our linac source model, dose distributions of different open fields in a water phantom were calculated using our source model and compared to those directly calculated using the reference phase-space file. The average distance-to-agreement (DTA) was within 1 mm for the depth dose in the build-up region and beam penumbra regions. The root-mean-square (RMS) dose difference was within 1.1% for dose profiles at inner and outer beam regions. The maximal relative difference of output factors was within 0.5%. Good agreements were also found in an IMRT prostate patient case and an IMRT head-and-neck case. Monte Carlo (MC) method has been recognized the most accurate dose calculation method for radiotherapy. However, its extremely long computation time impedes clinical applications. Recently, a lot of efforts have been made to realize fast MC dose calculation on GPUs. Nonetheless, most of the GPU-based MC dose engines were developed in NVidia CUDA environment. This limits the code portability to other platforms, hindering the introduction of GPU-based MC simulations to clinical practice. The objective of this paper is to develop a fast cross-platform MC dose engine oclMC using OpenCL environment for external beam photon and electron radiotherapy in MeV energy range. Coupled photon-electron MC simulation was implemented with analogue simulations for photon transports and a Class II condensed history scheme for electron transports. To test the accuracy and efficiency of our dose engine oclMC, we compared dose calculation results of oclMC and gDPM, our previously developed GPU-based MC code, for a 15 MeV electron beam and a 6 MV photon beam on a homogenous water phantom, one slab phantom and one half-slab phantom. Satisfactory agreement was observed in all the cases. The average dose differences within 10% isodose line of the maximum dose were 0.48-0.53% for the electron beam cases and 0.15-0.17% for the photon beam cases. In terms of efficiency, our dose engine oclMC was 6-17% slower than gDPM when running both codes on the same NVidia TITAN card due to both different physics particle transport models and different computational environments between CUDA and OpenCL. The cross-platform portability was also validated by successfully running our new dose engine on a set of different compute devices including an Nvidia GPU card, two AMD GPU cards and an Intel CPU card using one or four cores. In the treatment plan optimization for intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), dose-deposition coefficient (DDC) matrix is often pre-computed to parameterize the dose contribution to each voxel in the volume of interest from each beamlet of unit intensity. However, due to the limitation of computer memory and the requirement on computational efficiency, in practice matrix elements of small values are usually truncated, which inevitably compromises the quality of the resulting plan. A fixed-point iteration scheme has been applied in IMRT optimization to solve this problem, which has been reported to be effective and efficient based on the observations of the numerical experiments. In this paper, we aim to point out the mathematics behind this scheme and to answer the following three questions: 1) whether the fixed-point iteration algorithm converges or not? 2) when it converges, whether the fixed point solution is same as the original solution obtained with the complete DDC matrix? 3) if not the same, whether the fixed point solution is more accurate than the naive solution of the truncated problem obtained without the fixed-point iteration? To answer these questions, we first performed mathematical analysis and deductions using a simplified fluence map optimization (FMO) model. Then we conducted numerical experiments on a head-and-neck patient case using both the simplified and the original FMO model. Both our mathematical analysis and numerical experiments demonstrate that with proper DDC matrix truncation, the fixed-point iteration can converge. Even though the converged solution is not the one that we obtain with the complete DDC matrix, the fixed-point iteration scheme could significantly improve the plan accuracy compared with the solution to the truncated problem obtained without the fixed-point iteration., Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables

A novel phase-space source implementation has been designed for GPU-based Monte Carlo dose calculation engines. Due to the parallelized nature of GPU hardware, it is essential to simultaneously transport particles of the same type and similar energies but separated spatially to yield a high efficiency. We present three methods for phase-space implementation that have been integrated into the most recent version of the GPU-based Monte Carlo radiotherapy dose calculation package gDPM v3.0. The first method is to sequentially read particles from a patient-dependent phase-space and sort them on-the-fly based on particle type and energy. The second method supplements this with a simple secondary collimator model and fluence map implementation so that patient-independent phase-space sources can be used. Finally, as the third method (called the phase-space-let, or PSL, method) we introduce a novel strategy to pre-process patient-independent phase-spaces and bin particles by type, energy and position. Position bins located outside a rectangular region of interest enclosing the treatment field are ignored, substantially decreasing simulation time. The three methods were validated in absolute dose against BEAMnrc/DOSXYZnrc and compared using gamma-index tests (2%/2mm above the 10% isodose). It was found that the PSL method has the optimal balance between accuracy and efficiency and thus is used as the default method in gDPM v3.0. Using the PSL method, open fields of 4x4, 10x10 and 30x30 cm2 in water resulted in gamma passing rates of 99.96%, 99.92% and 98.66%, respectively. Relative output factors agreed within 1%. An IMRT patient plan using the PSL method resulted in a passing rate of 97%, and was calculated in 50 seconds using a single GPU compared to 8.4 hours (per CPU) for BEAMnrc/DOSXYZnrc., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures

Four-dimensional Cone Beam Computed Tomography (4D-CBCT) has been developed to provide respiratory phase resolved volumetric imaging in image guided radiation therapy (IGRT). Inadequate number of projections in each phase bin results in low quality 4D-CBCT images with obvious streaking artifacts. In this work, we propose two novel 4D-CBCT algorithms: an iterative reconstruction algorithm and an enhancement algorithm, utilizing a temporal nonlocal means (TNLM) method. We define a TNLM energy term for a given set of 4D-CBCT images. Minimization of this term favors those 4D-CBCT images such that any anatomical features at one spatial point at one phase can be found in a nearby spatial point at neighboring phases. 4D-CBCT reconstruction is achieved by minimizing a total energy containing a data fidelity term and the TNLM energy term. As for the image enhancement, 4D-CBCT images generated by the FDK algorithm are enhanced by minimizing the TNLM function while keeping the enhanced images close to the FDK results. A forward-backward splitting algorithm and a Gauss-Jacobi iteration method are employed to solve the problems. The algorithms are implemented on GPU to achieve a high computational efficiency. The reconstruction algorithm and the enhancement algorithm generate visually similar 4D-CBCT images, both better than the FDK results. Quantitative evaluations indicate that, compared with the FDK results, our reconstruction method improves contrast-to-noise-ratio (CNR) by a factor of 2.56~3.13 and our enhancement method increases the CNR by 2.75~3.33 times. The enhancement method also removes over 80% of the streak artifacts from the FDK results. The total computation time is ~460 sec for the reconstruction algorithm and ~610 sec for the enhancement algorithm on an NVIDIA Tesla C1060 GPU card., Comment: 20 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables

High radiation dose in CT scans increases a lifetime risk of cancer and has become a major clinical concern. Recently, iterative reconstruction algorithms with Total Variation (TV) regularization have been developed to reconstruct CT images from highly undersampled data acquired at low mAs levels in order to reduce the imaging dose. Nonetheless, TV regularization may lead to over-smoothed images and lost edge information. To solve this problem, in this work we develop an iterative CT reconstruction algorithm with edge-preserving TV regularization to reconstruct CT images from highly undersampled data obtained at low mAs levels. The CT image is reconstructed by minimizing an energy consisting of an edge-preserving TV norm and a data fidelity term posed by the x-ray projections. The edge-preserving TV term is proposed to preferentially perform smoothing only on non-edge part of the image in order to avoid over-smoothing, which is realized by introducing a penalty weight to the original total variation norm. Our iterative algorithm is implemented on GPU to improve its speed. We test our reconstruction algorithm on a digital NCAT phantom, a physical chest phantom, and a Catphan phantom. Reconstruction results from a conventional FBP algorithm and a TV regularization method without edge preserving penalty are also presented for comparison purpose. The experimental results illustrate that both TV-based algorithm and our edge-preserving TV algorithm outperform the conventional FBP algorithm in suppressing the streaking artifacts and image noise under the low dose context. Four-dimensional computed tomography (4DCT) has been widely used in cancer radiotherapy for accurate target delineation and motion measurement for tumors in thorax and upper abdomen areas. However, 4DCT simulation is associated with much higher imaging dose than conventional CT simulation, which is a major concern in its clinical application. Conventionally, each phase of 4DCT is reconstructed independently using the filtered backprojection (FBP) algorithm. The basic idea of our new algorithm is that, by utilizing the common information among different phases, the input information required to reconstruct image of high quality, and thus the imaging dose, can be reduced. We proposed a temporal non-local means (TNLM) method to explore the inter-phase similarity. All phases of the 4DCT images are reconstructed simultaneously by minimizing a cost function consisting of a data fidelity term and a TNLM regularization term. We utilized a forward-backward splitting algorithm and a Gauss-Jacobi iteration method to efficiently solve the minimization problem. The algorithm was also implemented on graphics processing unit (GPU) to achieve a high computational speed. Our reconstruction algorithm has been tested on a digital NCAT thorax phantom in three low dose scenarios. Our new algorithm generates visually much better CT images containing less image noise and streaking artifacts compared with the standard FBP algorithm. Quantitative analysis shows that much higher contrast-to-noise ratio and signal-to-noise ratio can be obtained using our algorithm. We demonstrate thermally tunable superconductor hole array with active control over their resonant transmission induced by surface plasmon polaritons . The array was lithographically fabricated on high temperature YBCO superconductor and characterized by terahertz-time domain spectroscopy. We observe a clear transition from the virtual excitation of the surface plasmon mode to the real surface plasmon mode. The highly tunable superconducting plasmonic hole arrays may have promising applications in the design of low-loss, large dynamic range amplitude modulation, and surface plasmon based terahertz devices., Comment: 3 figures

We characterize the behaviour of split ring resonators made up of high-transition temperature YBCO superconductor using terahertz time domain spectroscopy. The superconductor metamaterial shows sharp change in the transmission spectrum at the fundamental inductive-capacitive resonance and the dipole resonance as the temperature dips below the transition temperature. Our results reveal that the high performance of such a metamaterial is limited by material imperfections and defects such as cracks, voids and secondary phases which play dominant role in partially impeding the flow of current causing dissipation of energy and electrical resistance to appear in the superconductor film., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Optical properties of planar thin film metamaterials were measured at room and liquid nitrogen temperatures using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. The operation of metamaterials at cryogenic temperatures is anticipated to be a promising path towards low-loss metamaterials since nonradiative losses are strongly suppressed due to higher charge mobility. A 14% increase in the quality factor of the resonances was experimentally observed. It was limited by the high electron scattering rate due to defects in thin films. Supplementary simulations assuming metamaterials made of thick films reveal a temperature controlled behaviour and a 40% increase of the Q-factor at 10 K., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Using terahertz time domain spectroscopy we investigate the normal incidence transmission through periodically and randomly arranged planar split ring resonators (SRRs). Introduction of positional disorder in metamaterials has no effect on the quality factor of the fundamental Inductive-Capacitive (LC) resonance. The dipole resonances undergo broadening and shift in their resonance frequencies. The experiment reveals that the randomly distributed SRR structures interact incoherently at LC resonance but couple coherently at the higher frequency dipole resonance.
