The Parameterised Post-Newtonian (PPN) approach is the default framework for performing precision tests of gravity in nearby astrophysical systems. In recent works we have extended this approach for cosmological applications, and in this paper we use observations of the anisotropies in the Cosmic Microwave Background to constrain the time variation of the PPN parameters $\alpha$ and $\gamma$ between last scattering and the present day. We find their time-averages over cosmological history should be within $\sim 20\%$ of their values in GR, with $\bar{\alpha}=0.89^{+0.08}_{-0.09}$ and $\bar{\gamma}=0.90^{+0.07}_{-0.08}$ at the $68\%$ confidence level. We also constrain the time derivatives of these parameters, and find that their present-day values should be within a factor of two of the best Solar System constraints. Many of these results have no counter-part from Solar System observations, and are entirely new constraints on the gravitational interaction. In all cases, we find that the data strongly prefer $\bar{\alpha}\simeq \bar{\gamma}$, meaning that observers would typically find local gravitational physics to be compatible with GR, despite considerable variation of $\alpha$ and $\gamma$ being allowed over cosmic history. Carbon- and Oxygen-rich stars populating the Thermally-Pulsing Asymptotic Giant Branch (TP-AGB) phase of stellar evolution are relevant contributors to the spectra of ~1 Gyr old populations. Atmosphere models for these types are uncertain, due to complex molecules and mass-loss effects. Empirical spectra are then crucial, but samples are small due to the short (~3 Myr) TP-AGB lifetime. Here we exploit the vastness of the MaNGA Stellar library MaStar (~60,000 spectra) to identify C,O-rich type stars. We define an optical colour selection with cuts of (g-r)>2 and (g-i)<1.55(g-r)-0.07, calibrated with known C- and O- rich spectra. This identifies C-,O-rich stars along clean, separated sequences. An analogue selection is found in V,R,I bands. Our equation identifies C- and O-rich spectra with predictive performance metric F1-scores of 0.72 and 0.74 (over 1), respectively. We finally identify 41 C- and 87 O-rich type AGB stars in MaStar, 5 and 49 of which do not have a SIMBAD counterpart. We also detect a sample of non-AGB, dwarf C-stars. We further design a fitting procedure to classify the spectra into broad spectral types, by using as fitting templates empirical C and O-rich spectra. We find remarkably good fits for the majority of candidates and categorise them into C- and O-rich bins following existing classifications, which correlate to effective temperature. Our selection models can be applied to large photometric surveys (e.g. Euclid, Rubin). The iMaNGA project uses a forward-modelling approach to compare the predictions of cosmological simulations with observations from SDSS-IV/MaNGA. We investigate the dependency of age and metallicity radial gradients on galaxy morphology, stellar mass, stellar surface mass density ($\Sigma_*$), and environment. The key of our analysis is that observational biases affecting the interpretation of MaNGA data are emulated in the theoretical iMaNGA sample. The simulations reproduce the observed global stellar population scaling relations with positive correlations between galaxy mass and age/metallicity quite well and also produce younger stellar populations in late-type in agreement with observations. We do find interesting discrepancies, though, that can inform the physics and further development of the simulations. Ages of spiral galaxies and low-mass ellipticals are overestimated by about 2-4 Gyr. Radial metallicity gradients are steeper in iMaNGA than in MaNGA, a discrepancy most prominent in spiral and lenticular galaxies. Also, the observed steepening of metallicity gradients with increasing galaxy mass is not well matched by the simulations. We find that the theoretical radial profiles of surface mass density $\Sigma_*$ are steeper than in observations except for the most massive galaxies. In both MaNGA and iMaNGA [Z/H] correlates with $\Sigma_*$, however, the simulations systematically predict lower [Z/H] by almost a factor of 2 at any $\Sigma_*$. Most interestingly, for galaxies with stellar mass $\log M_*\leq 10.80 M_\odot$ the MaNGA data reveal a positive correlation between galaxy radius and [Z/H] at fixed $\Sigma_*$, which is not recovered in iMaNGA. Finally, the dependence on environmental density is negligible in both the theoretical iMaNGA and the observed MaNGA data.

Several prominent forthcoming Cosmic Microwave Background polarisation experiments will employ a Continuously Rotating Half-Wave Plate (CRHWP), the primary purpose of which is to mitigate instrumental systematic effects on relatively large angular scales, where the $B$-mode polarisation signal generated by primordial gravitational waves is expected to peak. The use of a CRHWP necessitates demodulating the time-ordered data during the early stages of data processing. The standard approach is to ``lock in'' on the polarisation signal using the known polarisation modulation frequency and then use Fourier techniques to filter out the remaining unwanted components in the data. However, an alternative less well-studied option is to incorporate the demodulation directly into the map-making step. Using simulations, we compare the performance of these two approaches to determine which is most effective for $B$-mode signal recovery. Testing the two techniques in multiple experimental scenarios, we find that the lock-in technique performs best over the full multipole range explored. However, for the recovery of the largest angular scales ($\ell < 100$) we find essentially no difference in the recovery of the signal between the lock-in and map-making approaches, suggesting that a parallel analysis based on the latter approach could represent a powerful consistency check for primordial $B$-mode experiments employing a CRHWP. We also investigate the impact of a detector-differencing step, implemented prior to demodulation, finding that in most scenarios it makes no difference whether differencing is used or not. However, analysing detectors individually allows the point at which information from multiple detectors is combined to be moved to later stages in the analysis pipeline. This presents alternative options for dealing with instrumental systematic effects that are not mitigated by the CRHWP.

Model-independent tests of gravity with cosmology are important when testing extensions to the standard cosmological model. To maximise the impact of these tests one requires predictions for the matter power spectrum on non-linear scales. In this work we validate the \texttt{ReACT} approach to the non-linear matter power spectrum against a suite of phenomenological modified gravity N-body simulations with a time-varying gravitational constant, covering a wider range of parameter space than previously examined. This vanilla application of \texttt{ReACT} has limited range and precision due to the different concentration-mass relation $c(M)$ that occurs when gravity is modified. We extend this approach with a fitting function for a modified concentration-mass relation, allowing for accurate (1$\%$) computation of the matter power spectrum up $k=2\,h\,{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$ across a substantial range of parameter space. Flare frequency distributions represent a key approach to addressing one of the largest problems in solar and stellar physics: determining the mechanism that counter-intuitively heats coronae to temperatures that are orders of magnitude hotter than the corresponding photospheres. It is widely accepted that the magnetic field is responsible for the heating, but there are two competing mechanisms that could explain it: nanoflares or Alfv\'en waves. To date, neither can be directly observed. Nanoflares are, by definition, extremely small, but their aggregate energy release could represent a substantial heating mechanism, presuming they are sufficiently abundant. One way to test this presumption is via the flare frequency distribution, which describes how often flares of various energies occur. If the slope of the power law fitting the flare frequency distribution is above a critical threshold, $\alpha=2$ as established in prior literature, then there should be a sufficient abundance of nanoflares to explain coronal heating. We performed $>$600 case studies of solar flares, made possible by an unprecedented number of data analysts via three semesters of an undergraduate physics laboratory course. This allowed us to include two crucial, but nontrivial, analysis methods: pre-flare baseline subtraction and computation of the flare energy, which requires determining flare start and stop times. We aggregated the results of these analyses into a statistical study to determine that $\alpha = 1.63 \pm 0.03$. Direct numerical simulations are used to elucidate the interplay of wettability and fluid viscosities on immiscible fluid displacements in a heterogeneous porous medium.We classify the flow regimes based using qualitative and quantitative analysis into viscous fingering (low $M$), compact displacement (high $M$), and an intermediate transition regime ($M \approx 1$). We use stability analysis to obtain theoretical phase boundaries between these regimes, which agree well with our analyses. At the macroscopic (sample) scale, we find that wettability strongly controls the threshold $M$ (at which the regimes change). At the pore scale, wettability alters the dominant pore-filling mechanism. At very small $M$ (viscous fingering regime), smaller pore spaces are preferentially invaded during imbibition, with flow of films of invading fluid along the pore walls. In contrast, during drainage, bursts result in filling of pores irrespective of their size. As $M$ increases, the effect of wettability decreases as cooperative filling becomes the dominant mechanism regardless of wettability. This suggest that for imbibition at a given contact angle, decreasing $M$ is associated with change in effective wetting from neutral-wet (cooperative filling) to strong-wet (film flow).

We study the prospects for detection of continuous gravitational signals from "normal" Galactic neutron stars, i.e. non-recycled ones. We use a synthetic population generated by evolving stellar remnants in time, according to several models. We consider the most recent constraints set by all-sky searches for continuous gravitational waves and use them for our detectability criteria. We discuss detection prospects for the current and the next generation of gravitational wave detectors. We find that neutron stars whose ellipticity is solely caused by magnetic deformations cannot produce any detectable signal, not even by 3rd-generation detectors. Currently detectable sources all have $B\lesssim10^{12}$ G and deformations not solely due to the magnetic field. For these in fact we find that the larger the magnetic field is, the larger is the ellipticity required for the signal to be detectable and this ellipticity is well above the value induced by the magnetic field. Third-generation detectors as the Einstein Telescope and Cosmic Explorer will be able to detect up to $\approx 250$ more sources than current detectors. We briefly treat the case of recycled neutron stars, with a simplified model. We find that continuous gravitational waves from these objects will likely remain elusive to detection by current detectors but should be detectable with the next generation of detectors.

General relativity manifests very similar equations in different regimes, notably in large scale cosmological perturbation theory, non-linear cosmological structure formation, and in weak field galactic dynamics. The same is not necessarily true in alternative gravity theories, in particular those that possess MONDian behaviour ("relativistic extensions" of MOND). In these theories different regimes are typically studied quite separately, sometimes even with the freedom in the theories chosen differently in different regimes. If we wish to properly and fully test complete cosmologies containing MOND against the $\Lambda$CDM paradigm then we need to understand cosmological structure formation on all scales, and do so in a coherent and consistent manner. We propose a method for doing so and apply it to generalised Einstein-Aether theories as a case study. We derive the equations that govern cosmological structure formation on all scales in these theories and show that the same free function (which may contain both Newtonian and MONDian branches) appears in the cosmological background, linear perturbations, and non-linear cosmological structure formation. We show that MONDian behaviour on galactic scales does not necessarily result in MONDian behaviour on cosmological scales, and for MONDian behaviour to arise cosmologically, there will be no modification to the Friedmann equations governing the evolution of the homogeneous cosmological background. We comment on how existing N-body simulations relate to complete and consistent generalised Einstein-Aether cosmologies. Strengthening the synergy between simulations and observations is essential to test galaxy formation and evolution theories. To achieve this goal, in the first paper of this series, we presented a method to generate mock SDSS-IV/MaNGA integral-field spectroscopic galaxy observations from cosmological simulations. In this second paper, we build the iMaNGA catalogue consisting of $\sim$1,000 unique galaxies from the TNG50 cosmological simulations, selected to mimic the SDSS-IV/MaNGA-Primary sample selection. Here we present and discuss the iMaNGA sample and its comparison to the MaNGA Primary catalogue. The iMaNGA sample well recovers the MaNGA-Primary sample in terms of stellar mass vs angular size relation and spatial resolution. The S\'ersic index vs angular size relation, instead, is not reproduced well by the simulations, mostly because of a paucity of high-mass elliptical galaxies in TNG50. We also investigate our ability to recover the galaxy kinematics and stellar population properties with full-spectral fitting. We demonstrate that 'intrinsic' and `recovered' stellar kinematics, stellar ages and metallicities are consistent, with residuals compatible with zero within 1$-{\sigma}$. Also`intrinsic' and `recovered' star formation histories display a great resemblance. We conclude that our mock generation and spectral fitting processes do not distort the `intrinsic' galaxy properties. We present a stellar parameter catalog built to accompany the MaStar Stellar Library, which is a comprehensive collection of empirical, medium-resolution stellar spectra. We constructed this parameter catalog by using a multicomponent $\chi^{2}$ fitting approach to match MaStar spectra to models generated by interpolating the ATLAS9-based BOSZ model spectra. The total $\chi^{2}$ for a given model is defined as the sum of components constructed to characterize narrow-band features of observed spectra (e.g., absorption lines) and the broadband continuum shape separately. Extinction and systematics due to flux calibration were taken into account in the fitting. The $\chi^{2}$ distribution for a given region of model space was sampled using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm, the data from which were then used to extract atmospheric parameter estimates ($T_{eff}$, log g, [Fe/H], and [$\alpha$/Fe]), their corresponding uncertainties, and direct extinction measurements. Two methods were used to extract parameters and uncertainties: one that accepts the MCMC's prescribed minimum-$\chi^{2}$ result, and one that uses Bayesian inference to compute a likelihood-weighted mean from the $\chi^{2}$ distribution sampled by the MCMC. Results were evaluated for internal consistency using repeat observations where available and by comparing them with external data sets (e.g., APOGEE-2 and Gaia DR2). Our spectral-fitting exercise reveals possible deficiencies in current theoretical model spectra, illustrating the potential power of MaStar spectra for helping to improve the models. There has been substantial commentary on the role of cyberattacks carried out by low-level cybercrime actors in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. We analyse 358k website defacement attacks, 1.7M UDP amplification DDoS attacks, 1764 posts made by 372 users on Hack Forums mentioning the two countries, and 441 Telegram announcements (with 58k replies) of a volunteer hacking group for two months before and four months after the invasion. We find the conflict briefly but notably caught the attention of low-level cybercrime actors, with significant increases in online discussion and both types of attacks targeting Russia and Ukraine. However, there was little evidence of high-profile actions; the role of these players in the ongoing hybrid warfare is minor, and they should be separated from persistent and motivated 'hacktivists' in state-sponsored operations. Their involvement in the conflict appears to have been short-lived and fleeting, with a clear loss of interest in discussing the situation and carrying out both website defacement and DDoS attacks against either Russia or Ukraine after just a few weeks.

Parameterised Post-Newtonian Cosmology (PPNC) is a theory-agnostic framework for testing gravity in cosmology, which connects gravitational physics on small and large scales in the Universe. It is a direct extension of the Parameterised Post-Newtonian (PPN) approach to testing gravity in isolated astrophysical systems, and therefore allows constraints on gravity from vastly different physical regimes to be compared and combined. We investigate the application of this framework to a class of example scalar-tensor theories of gravity in order to verify theoretical predictions, and to investigate for the first time the scale-dependence of the gravitational couplings that appear within its perturbation equations. In doing so, we evaluate the performance of some simple interpolating functions in the transition region between small and large cosmological scales, as well as the uncertainties that using such functions would introduce into the calculation of observables. We find that all theoretical predictions of the PPNC framework are verified to high accuracy in the relevant regimes, and that simple interpolating functions perform well (but not perfectly) between these regimes. This study is an important step towards being able to use the PPNC framework to analyse cosmological datasets, and to thereby test if/how the gravitational interaction has changed as the Universe has evolved., Comment: 28 pages, 16 figures

We spectroscopically detected candidate emission-lines of 8 likely, 17 probable, and 69 possible strong galaxy-galaxy gravitational lens candidates found within the spectra of ~10,000 galaxy targets contained within the completed Mapping of Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey. This search is based upon the methodology of the Spectroscopic Identification of Lensing Objects (SILO) project, which extends the spectroscopic detection methods of the BOSS Emission-Line Lensing Survey (BELLS) and the Sloan Lens ACS Survey (SLACS). We scanned the co-added residuals that we constructed from stacks of foreground subtracted row-stacked-spectra (RSS) so a sigma-clipping method can be used to reject cosmic-rays and other forms of transients that impact only a small fraction of the combined exposures. We also constructed narrow-band images from the signal-to-noise of the co-added residuals to observe signs of lensed source images. We also use several methods to compute the probable strong lensing regime for each candidate lens to determine which candidate background galaxies may reside sufficiently near the galaxy centre for strong lensing to occur. We present the spectroscopic redshifts within a value-added catalogue (VAC) for data release 17 (DR17) of SDSS-IV. We also present the lens candidates, spectroscopic data, and narrow-band images within a VAC for DR17. High resolution follow-up imaging of these lens candidates are expected to yield a sample of confirmed grade-A lenses with sufficient angular size to probe possible discrepancies between the mass derived from a best-fitting lens model, and the dynamical mass derived from the observed stellar velocities., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, June 20, 2022. Galaxy formation and evolution simulations are essential tools to probe poorly known astrophysics processes, but particular care is needed to compare simulations with galaxy observations, as observed data need to be modelled as well. We present a method to generate mock galaxies from the hydro-dynamical IllustrisTNG simulations which are suited to compare with integral field spectroscopic observation of galaxies from the SDSS-IV/MaNGA survey. Firstly, we include the same instrumental effects and procedures as adopted in the acquisition and analysis of real data. Furthermore, we generate the galaxy spectra from the simulations using new stellar population models based on the MaNGA stellar library (MaStar). In this way, our mock data cubes have the same spatial sampling, cover the same wavelength range (3600-10300 \r{A}), and share the same spectral resolution ($R\approx1800$) and flux calibration of real MaNGA galaxy spectra. In this first paper, we demonstrate the method over an early-type and a late-type simulated galaxy from TNG50. We analyse the correspondent mock MaNGA-like data cubes with the same full spectral fitting code, \textsc{FIREFLY}, which was used for the observed spectra. We find that the intrinsic and recovered age and metallicity gradients are consistent within 1${\sigma}$, with residuals over all tassels consistent with $0$ at the 68$\%$ confidence level. We also perform the challenging test at comparing intrinsic and recovered star formation histories, finding a close resemblance between input and output. In follow-up papers, we will present a full simulated MaNGA-like catalogue ($\approx10,000$ galaxies) with a comprehensive comparison of TNG50 simulations to MaNGA observational results.

Stellar radial migration plays an important role in reshaping a galaxy's structure and the radial distribution of stellar population properties. In this work, we revisit reported observational evidence for radial migration and quantify its strength using the age--[Fe/H] distribution of stars across the Milky Way with APOGEE data. We find a broken age--[Fe/H] relation in the Galactic disc at $r>6$ kpc, with a more pronounced break at larger radii. To quantify the strength of radial migration, we assume stars born at each radius have a unique age and metallicity, and then decompose the metallicity distribution function (MDF) of mono-age young populations into different Gaussian components that originated from various birth radii at $r_{\rm birth}<13$ kpc. We find that, at ages of 2 and 3 Gyr, roughly half the stars were formed within 1 kpc of their present radius, and very few stars ($<5$%) were formed more than 4 kpc away from their present radius. These results suggest limited short distance radial migration and inefficient long distance migration in the Milky Way during the last 3 Gyr. In the very outer disc beyond 15~kpc, the observed age--[Fe/H] distribution is consistent with the prediction of pure radial migration from smaller radii, suggesting a migration origin of the very outer disc. We also estimate intrinsic metallicity gradients at ages of 2 and 3 Gyr of $-0.061$ dex kpc$^{-1}$ and $-0.063$ dex kpc$^{-1}$, respectively., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures, MNRAS in press

We present the MaNGA FIREFLY Value-Added-Catalogue (VAC) - a catalogue of ~3.7 million spatially resolved stellar population properties across 10,010 nearby galaxies from the final data release of the MaNGA survey. The full spectral fitting code firefly is employed to derive parameters such as stellar ages, metallicities, stellar and remnant masses, star formation histories, star formation rates and dust attenuation. In addition to Voronoi-binned measurements, our VAC also provides global properties, such as central values and radial gradients. Two variants of the VAC are available: presenting the results from fits using the M11-MILES and the novel MaStar stellar population models. MaStar allows to constrain the fit over the whole MaNGA wavelength range, extends the age-metallicity parameter space, and uses empirical spectra from the same instrument as MaNGA. The fits employing MaStar models find on average slightly younger ages, higher mass-weighted metallicities and smaller colour excesses. These differences are reduced when matching wavelength range and converging template grids. We further report that FIREFLY stellar masses are systematically lower by ~0.3 dex than masses from the MaNGA PCA and Pipe3D VACs, but match masses from the NSA best with only ~0.1 dex difference. Finally, we show that FIREFLY stellar ages correlate with spectral index age indicators H$\delta_A$ and $D_n$(4000), though with a clear additional metallicity dependence., Comment: 20 pages, 16 figures (+appendix). This paper documents the seventeenth data release (DR17) from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys; the fifth and final release from the fourth phase (SDSS-IV). DR17 contains the complete release of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey, which reached its goal of surveying over 10,000 nearby galaxies. The complete release of the MaNGA Stellar Library (MaStar) accompanies this data, providing observations of almost 30,000 stars through the MaNGA instrument during bright time. DR17 also contains the complete release of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 (APOGEE-2) survey which publicly releases infra-red spectra of over 650,000 stars. The main sample from the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS), as well as the sub-survey Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey (TDSS) data were fully released in DR16. New single-fiber optical spectroscopy released in DR17 is from the SPectroscipic IDentification of ERosita Survey (SPIDERS) sub-survey and the eBOSS-RM program. Along with the primary data sets, DR17 includes 25 new or updated Value Added Catalogs (VACs). This paper concludes the release of SDSS-IV survey data. The MaNGA Stellar Library (MaStar) is a large collection of high-quality empirical stellar spectra designed to cover all spectral types and ideal for use in the stellar population analysis of galaxies observed in the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey. The library contains 59,266 spectra of 24,130 unique stars with spectral resolution $R\sim1800$ and covering a wavelength range of $3,622-10,354$ \r{A}. In this work, we derive five physical parameters for each spectrum in the library: effective temperature ($T_{eff}$), surface gravity ($\log g$), metalicity ($[Fe/H]$), micro-turbulent velocity ($\log(v_{micro})$), and alpha-element abundance ($[\alpha/Fe]$). These parameters are derived with a flexible data-driven algorithm that uses a neural network model. We train a neural network using the subset of 1,675 MaStar targets that have also been observed in the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE), adopting the independently-derived APOGEE Stellar Parameter and Chemical Abundance Pipeline (ASPCAP) parameters for this reference set. For the regions of parameter space not well represented by the APOGEE training set ($7,000 \leq T \leq 30,000$ K), we supplement with theoretical model spectra. We calculate the fundamental stellar parameters effective temperature, surface gravity and iron abundance - T$_{\rm eff}$, log g, [Fe/H] - for the final release of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) Stellar Library (MaStar), containing 59,266 per-visit-spectra for 24,290 unique stars at intermediate resolution ($R\sim1800$) and high S/N (median = 96). We fit theoretical spectra from model atmospheres by both MARCS and BOSZ-ATLAS9 to the observed MaStar spectra, using the full spectral fitting code pPXF. We further employ a Bayesian approach, using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) technique to map the parameter space and obtain uncertainties. Originally in this paper, we cross match MaStar observations with Gaia photometry, which enable us to set reliable priors and identify outliers according to stellar evolution. In parallel to the parameter determination, we calculate corresponding stellar population models to test the reliability of the parameters for each stellar evolutionary phase. We further assess our procedure by determining parameters for standard stars such as the Sun and Vega and by comparing our parameters with those determined in the literature from high-resolution spectroscopy (APOGEE and SEGUE) and from lower-resolution matching template (LAMOST). The comparisons, considering the different methodologies and S/N of the literature surveys, are favourable in all cases. Our final parameter catalogue for MaStar cover the following ranges: $2592 \leq $ T$_{\rm eff} \leq 32983\;$K; $-0.7 \leq $ log g $ \leq 5.4\;$dex; $-2.9 \leq $ [Fe/H] $\leq 1.0\;$dex and will be available with the last SDSS-IV Data Release, in December 2021., Comment: 22 pages, 25 figures. On 2019 August 14 at 21:10:39 UTC, the LIGO/Virgo Collaboration (LVC) detected a possible neutron star-black hole merger (NSBH), the first ever identified. An extensive search for an optical counterpart of this event, designated GW190814, was undertaken using the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) on the 4m Victor M. Blanco Telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory. Target of Opportunity interrupts were issued on 8 separate nights to observe 11 candidates using the 4.1m Southern Astrophysical Research (SOAR) telescope's Goodman High Throughput Spectrograph in order to assess whether any of these transients was likely to be an optical counterpart of the possible NSBH merger. Here, we describe the process of observing with SOAR, the analysis of our spectra, our spectroscopic typing methodology, and our resultant conclusion that none of the candidates corresponded to the gravitational wave merger event but were all instead other transients. Finally, we describe the lessons learned from this effort. The distribution of stellar metallicities within and across galaxies is an excellent relic of the chemical evolution across cosmic time. We present a detailed analysis of spatially resolved stellar populations based on $>2.6$ million spatial bins from 7439 nearby galaxies in the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey. To account for accurate inclination corrections, we derive an equation for morphology dependent determination of galaxy inclinations. Our study goes beyond the well-known global mass-metallicity relation and radial metallicity gradients by providing a statistically sound exploration of local relations between stellar metallicity $[Z/H]$, stellar surface mass density $\Sigma_\star$ and galactocentric distance in the global mass-morphology plane. We find a significant resolved mass density-metallicity relation $\rm r\Sigma_\star ZR$ for galaxies of all types and masses above $10^{9.8}\,\mathrm{M_\odot}$. Different radial distances make an important contribution to the spread of the relation. Particularly, in low and intermediate mass galaxies, we find that at fixed $\Sigma_\star$ metallicity increases with radius independently of morphology. For high masses, this radial dependence is only observed in high $\Sigma_\star$ regions of spiral galaxies. This result calls for a driver of metallicity, in addition to $\Sigma_\star$ that promotes chemical enrichment in the outer parts of galaxies more strongly than in the inner parts. We present approaches to quickly simulate systematics affecting CMB observations, including the effects of the scanning strategy. Using summary properties of the scan we capture features of full time ordered data (TOD) simulations, allowing maps and power spectra to be generated at much improved speed for a number of systematics - the cases we present experienced speed ups of 3-4 orders of magnitude when implementing the map-based approaches. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the approaches at capturing the salient features of the scan by directly comparing to full TOD simulations - seeing agreement at sub-percent levels of accuracy. We simulate the effects of differential gain, pointing, and ellipticity to show the effectiveness of the approaches, but note that one could extend these techniques to other systematics. We finally show how to apply these fast map-based simulations of systematic effects to a full focal plane showing their ability to incorporate thousands of detectors as seen in modern CMB experiments., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures, 1 table, prepared for submission to MNRAS

Upcoming cosmological intensity mapping surveys will open new windows on the Universe, but they must first overcome a number of significant systematic effects, including polarization leakage. We present a formalism that uses scan strategy information to model the effect of different instrumental systematics on the recovered cosmological intensity signal for `single-dish' (autocorrelation) surveys. This modelling classifies different systematics according to their spin symmetry, making it particularly relevant for dealing with polarization leakage. We show how to use this formalism to calculate the expected contamination from different systematics as a function of the scanning strategy. Most importantly, we show how systematics can be disentangled from the intensity signal based on their spin properties via map-making. We illustrate this, using a set of toy models, for some simple instrumental systematics, demonstrating the ability to significantly reduce the contamination to the observed intensity signal. Crucially, unlike existing foreground removal techniques, this approach works for signals that are non-smooth in frequency, e.g. polarized foregrounds. These map-making approaches are simple to apply and represent an orthogonal and complementary approach to existing techniques for removing systematics from upcoming 21cm intensity mapping surveys., Comment: 19 pages, 14 Figures, 2 Tables, published in MNRAS

Model-independent constraints on modified gravity models hitherto exist mainly on linear scales. A recently developed formalism presented a consistent parameterisation that is valid on all scales. Using this approach, we perform model-independent modified gravity $N$-body simulations on all cosmological scales with a time-dependent $\mu$. We present convergence tests of our simulations, and we examine how well existing fitting functions reproduce the non-linear matter power spectrum of the simulations. We find that although there is a significant variation in the accuracy of all of the fitting functions over the parameter space of our simulations, the ReACT framework delivers the most consistent performance for the matter power spectrum. We comment on how this might be improved to the level required for future surveys such as Euclid and the Vera Rubin Telescope (LSST). We also show how to compute weak-lensing observables consistently from the simulated matter power spectra in our approach, and show that ReACT also performs best when fitting the weak-lensing observables. We derive ages, metallicities, and individual element abundances of early- and late-type galaxies (ETGs and LTGs) out to 1.5 R$_e$. We study a large sample of 1900 galaxies spanning $8.6 - 11.3 \log M/M_{\odot}$ in stellar mass, through key absorption features in stacked spectra from the SDSS-IV/MaNGA survey. We use mock galaxy spectra with extended star formation histories to validate our method for LTGs and use corrections to convert the derived ages into luminosity- and mass-weighted quantities. We find flat age and negative metallicity gradients for ETGs and negative age and negative metallicity gradients for LTGs. Age gradients in LTGs steepen with increasing galaxy mass, from $-0.05\pm0.11~\log$ Gyr/R$_e$ for the lowest mass galaxies to $-0.82\pm0.08~\log$ Gyr/R$_e$ for the highest mass ones. This strong gradient-mass relation has a slope of $-0.70\pm0.18$. Comparing local age and metallicity gradients with the velocity dispersion $\sigma$ within galaxies against the global relation with $\sigma$ shows that internal processes regulate metallicity in ETGs but not age, and vice versa for LTGs. We further find that metallicity gradients with respect to local $\sigma$ show a much stronger dependence on galaxy mass than radial metallicity gradients. Both galaxy types display flat [C/Fe] and [Mg/Fe], and negative [Na/Fe] gradients, whereas only LTGs display gradients in [Ca/Fe] and [Ti/Fe]. ETGs have increasingly steep [Na/Fe] gradients with local $\sigma$ reaching $6.50\pm0.78$ dex/$\log$ km/s for the highest masses. [Na/Fe] ratios are correlated with metallicity for both galaxy types across the entire mass range in our sample, providing support for metallicity dependent supernova yields., Comment: 21 pages, 21 figures, 4 tables + Appendix

Instrumental systematics need to be controlled to high precision for upcoming Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) experiments. The level of contamination caused by these systematics is often linked to the scan strategy, and scan strategies for satellite experiments can significantly mitigate these systematics. However, no detailed study has been performed for ground-based experiments. Here we show that under the assumption of constant elevation scans (CESs), the ability of the scan strategy to mitigate these systematics is strongly limited, irrespective of the detailed structure of the scan strategy. We calculate typical values and maps of the quantities coupling the scan to the systematics, and show how these quantities vary with the choice of observing elevations. These values and maps can be used to calculate and forecast the magnitude of different instrumental systematics without requiring detailed scan strategy simulations. As a reference point, we show that inclusion of even a single boresight rotation angle significantly improves over sky rotation alone for mitigating these systematics. A standard metric for evaluating cross-linking is related to one of the parameters studied in this work, so a corollary of our work is that the cross-linking will suffer from the same CES limitations and therefore upcoming CMB surveys will unavoidably have poorly cross-linked regions if they use CESs, regardless of detailed scheduling choices. We present the first detailed case study using quadratic estimators (QE) to diagnose and remove systematics present in observed Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) maps. In this work we focus on the temperature to polarization leakage. We use an iterative QE analysis to remove systematics, in analogy to de-lensing, recovering the primordial B-mode signal and the systematic maps. We introduce a new Gaussian filtering scheme crucial to stable convergence of the iterative cleaning procedure and validate with comparisons to semi-analytical forecasts. We study the limitations of this method by examining its performance both on idealized simulations and on more realistic, non-ideal simulations, where we assume varying de-lensing efficiencies. Finally, we quantify the systematic cleaning efficiency by presenting a likelihood analysis on the tensor to scalar ratio, $r$, and demonstrate that the blind cleaning results in an un-biased measurement of $r$, reducing the systematic induced B-mode power by nearly two orders of magnitude., Comment: 30 pages, 12 figures, prepared for submission to JCAP

We study a phenomenological class of models where dark matter converts to dark radiation in the low redshift epoch. This class of models, dubbed DMDR, characterizes the evolution of comoving dark matter density with two extra parameters, and may be able to help alleviate the observed discrepancies between early- and late-time probes of the universe. We investigate how the conversion affects key cosmological observables such as the CMB temperature and matter power spectra. Combining 3x2pt data from Year 1 of the Dark Energy Survey, {\it Planck}-2018 CMB temperature and polarization data, supernovae (SN) Type Ia data from Pantheon, and baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) data from BOSS DR12, MGS and 6dFGS, we place new constraints on the amount of dark matter that has converted to dark radiation and the rate of this conversion. The fraction of the dark matter that has converted since the beginning of the universe in units of the current amount of dark matter, $\zeta$, is constrained at 68\% confidence level to be $<0.32$ for DES-Y1 3x2pt data, $<0.030$ for CMB+SN+BAO data, and $<0.037$ for the combined dataset. The probability that the DES and CMB+SN+BAO datasets are concordant increases from 4\% for the $\Lambda$CDM model to 8\% (less tension) for DMDR. The tension in $S_8 = \sigma_8 \sqrt{\Omega_{\rm m}/0.3}$ between DES-Y1 3x2pt and CMB+SN+BAO is slightly reduced from $2.3\sigma$ to $1.9\sigma$. We find no reduction in the Hubble tension when the combined data is compared to distance-ladder measurements in the DMDR model. The maximum-posterior goodness-of-fit statistics of DMDR and $\Lambda$CDM model are comparable, indicating no preference for the DMDR cosmology over $\Lambda$CDM., Comment: 23 pages, 11 figures. The CMB $B$-mode polarisation signal -- both the primordial gravitational wave signature and the signal sourced by lensing -- is subject to many contaminants from systematic effects. Of particular concern are systematics that result in mixing of signals of different ``spin'', particularly leakage from the much larger spin-0 intensity signal to the spin-2 polarisation signal. We present a general formalism, which can be applied to arbitrary focal plane setups, that characterises signals in terms of their spin. We provide general expressions to describe how spin-coupled signals observed by the detectors manifest at map-level, in the harmonic domain, and in the power spectra, focusing on the polarisation spectra -- the signals of interest for upcoming CMB surveys. We demonstrate the presence of a previously unidentified cross-term between the systematic and the intrinsic sky signal in the power spectrum, which in some cases can be the dominant source of contamination. The formalism is not restricted to intensity to polarisation leakage but provides a complete elucidation of all leakage including polarisation mixing, and applies to both full and partial (masked) sky surveys, thus covering space-based, balloon-borne, and ground-based experiments. Using a pair-differenced setup, we demonstrate the formalism by using it to completely characterise the effects of differential gain and pointing systematics, incorporating both intensity leakage and polarisation mixing. We validate our results with full time ordered data simulations. We conduct a quantitative analysis of the star formation history (SFH) of the Milky Way's bulge by exploiting the constraining power of its stellar [Fe/H] and [Mg/Fe] distribution functions. Using APOGEE data, we confirm the previously-established bimodal [Mg/Fe]--[Fe/H] distribution within 3 kpc of the inner Galaxy. Compared to that in the solar vicinity, the high-$\alpha$ population in the bulge peaks at a lower [Fe/H]. To fit these observations, we use a simple but flexible star formation framework, which assumes two distinct stages of gas accretion and star formation, and systematically evaluate a wide multi-dimensional parameter space. We find that the data favor a three-phase SFH that consists of an initial starburst, followed by a rapid star formation quenching episode and a lengthy, quiescent secular evolution phase. The metal-poor, high-$\alpha$ bulge stars ([Fe/H]<0.0 and [Mg/Fe]>0.15) are formed rapidly (<2 Gyr) during the early starburst. The density gap between the high- and low-$\alpha$ sequences is due to the quenching process. The metal-rich, low-$\alpha$ population ([Fe/H]>0.0 and [Mg/Fe]<0.15) then accumulates gradually through inefficient star formation during the secular phase. This is qualitatively consistent with the early SFH of the inner disk. Given this scenario, a notable fraction of young stars (age<5 Gyr) is expected to persist in the bulge. Combined with extragalactic observations, these results suggest that a rapid star formation quenching process is responsible for bimodal distributions in both the Milky Way's stellar populations and in the general galaxy population and thus plays a critical role in galaxy evolution., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures. We extend our previous work on the age-chemical abundance structure of the Galactic outer disc to the inner disc (4 < r < 8 kpc) based on the SDSS/APOGEE survey. Different from the outer disc, the inner disc stars exhibit a clear bimodal distribution in the [Mg/Fe]-[Fe/H] plane. While a number of scenarios have been proposed in the literature, it remains challenging to recover this bimodal distribution with theoretical models. To this end, we present a chemical evolution model embedding a complex multi-phase inner disc formation scenario that matches the observed bimodal [Mg/Fe]-[Fe/H] distribution. In this scenario, the formation of the inner disc is dominated by two main starburst episodes 6 Gyr apart with secular, low-level star formation activity in between. In our model, the first starburst occurs at early cosmic times (t~1 Gyr) and the second one 6 Gyr later at a cosmic time of t~7 Gyr. Both these starburst episodes are associated with gas accretion events in our model, and are quenched rapidly. The first starburst leads to the formation of the high-$\alpha$ sequence, and the second starburst leads to the formation of the metal-poor low-$\alpha$ sequence. The metal-rich low-$\alpha$ stars, instead, form during the secular evolution phase between the two bursts. Our model shows that the $\alpha$-dichotomy originates from the rapid suppression of star formation after the first starburst. The two starburst episodes are likely to be responsible for the formation of the geometric thick disc (z >1 kpc), with the old inner thick disc and the young outer thick disc forming during the first and the second starbursts, respectively., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures. We report the stellar atmospheric parameters for 7503 spectra contained in the first release of the MaNGA stellar library (MaStar) in SDSS DR15. The first release of MaStar contains 8646 spectra measured from 3321 unique stars, each covering the wavelength range 3622 \AA\ to 10354 \AA\ with a resolving power of $R \sim$ 1800. In this work, we first determined the basic stellar parameters: effective temperature ($\rm T_{eff}$), surface gravity ($\log g$), and metallicity ($\rm[Fe/H]$), which best fit the data using an empirical interpolator based on the Medium-resolution Isaac Newton Telescope library of empirical spectra (MILES), as implemented by the University of Lyon Spectroscopic analysis Software (Koleva et al. 2008, ULySS) package. While we analyzed all 8646 spectra from the first release of MaStar, since MaStar has a wider parameter-space coverage than MILES, not all of these fits are robust. In addition, not all parameter regions covered by MILES yield robust results, likely due to the non-uniform coverage of the parameter space by MILES. We tested the robustness of the method using the MILES spectra itself and identified a proxy based on the local density of the training set. With this proxy, we identified 7503 MaStar spectra with robust fitting results. They cover the range from 3179K to 20,517K in effective temperature ($\rm T_{eff}$), from 0.40 to 5.0 in surface gravity ($\log g$), and from $-$2.49 to $+$0.73 in metallicity ($\rm[Fe/H]$)., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures

We investigate the environmental dependence of the stellar populations of galaxies in SDSS DR7. Echoing earlier works, we find that satellites are both more metal-rich (<0.1 dex) and older (<2 Gyr) than centrals of the same stellar mass. However, after separating star-forming, green valley and passive galaxies, we find that the true environmental dependence of both stellar metallicity (<0.03 dex) and age (<0.5 Gyr) is in fact much weaker. We show that the strong environmental effects found when galaxies are not differentiated result from a combination of selection effects brought about by the environmental dependence of the quenched fraction of galaxies, and thus we strongly advocate for the separation of star-forming, green valley and passive galaxies when the environmental dependence of galaxy properties are investigated. We also study further environmental trends separately for both central and satellite galaxies. We find that star-forming galaxies show no environmental effects, neither for centrals nor for satellites. In contrast, the stellar metallicities of passive and green valley satellites increase weakly (< 0.05 dex and < 0.08 dex, respectively) with increasing halo mass, increasing local overdensity and decreasing projected distance from their central; this effect is interpreted in terms of moderate environmental starvation (`strangulation') contributing to the quenching of satellite galaxies. Finally, we find a unique feature in the stellar mass--stellar metallicity relation for passive centrals, where galaxies in more massive haloes have larger stellar mass (~0.1 dex) at constant stellar metallicity; this effect is interpreted in terms of dry merging of passive central galaxies and/or progenitor bias., Comment: 22 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The cosmological phenomenology of gravity is typically studied in two limits: relativistic perturbation theory (on large scales) and Newtonian gravity (required for smaller, non-linear, scales). Traditional approaches to model-independent modified gravity are based on perturbation theory, so do not apply on non-linear scales. Future surveys such as Euclid will produce significant data on both linear and non-linear scales, so a new approach is required to constrain model-independent modified gravity by simultaneously using all of the data from these surveys. We use the higher order equations from the post-Friedmann approach to derive a single set of "simple 1PF" (first post-Friedmann) equations that apply in both the small scale and large scale limits, and we examine the required conditions for there to be no intermediate regime, meaning that these simple equations are valid on all scales. We demonstrate how the simple 1PF equations derived here can be used as a model-independent framework for modified gravity that applies on all cosmological scales, and we present an algorithm for determining which modified gravity theories are subsumed under this approach. This modified gravity framework provides a rigorous approach to phenomenological N-body simulations, and paves the way to consistently using all of the data from upcoming surveys to constrain modified gravity in a model-independent fashion., Comment: Minor updates to match version published in PRD, primarily the addition of section V.C.6. We perform the first test of dark matter (DM) stress-energy evolution through cosmic history, using cosmic microwave background measurements supplemented with baryon acoustic oscillation data and the Hubble Space Telescope key project data. We constrain the DM equation of state (EoS) in 8 redshift bins, and its sound speed and (shear) viscosity in 9 redshift bins, finding no convincing evidence for non-$\Lambda$CDM values in any of the redshift bins. Despite this enlarged parameter space, the sound speed and viscosity are constrained relatively well at late times (due to the inclusion of CMB lensing), whereas the EoS is most strongly constrained around recombination. These results constrain for the first time the level of "coldness" required of DM across various cosmological epochs at both the background and perturbative levels. We show that simultaneously allowing time dependence for both the EoS and sound speed parameters shifts the posterior of the DM abundance before recombination to a higher value, while keeping the present day DM abundance similar to the $\Lambda$CDM value. This shifts the posterior for the present day Hubble constant compared to $\Lambda$CDM, suggesting that DM with time-dependent parameters is well-suited to explore possible solutions to persistent tensions within the $\Lambda$CDM model. We investigate the age-chemical abundance structure of the outer Galactic disc at a galactocentric distance of r > 10 kpc as recently revealed by the SDSS/APOGEE survey. Two sequences are present in the [alpha/Fe]-[Fe/H] plane with systematically different stellar ages. Surprisingly, the young sequence is less metal-rich, suggesting a recent dilution process by additional gas accretion. As the stars with the lowest iron abundance in the younger sequence also show an enhancement in alpha-element abundance, the gas accretion event must have involved a burst of star formation. In order to explain these observations, we construct a chemical evolution model. In this model we include a relatively short episode of gas accretion at late times on top of an underlying secular accretion over long timescales. Our model is successful at reproducing the observed distribution of stars in the three dimensional space of [alpha/Fe]-[Fe/H]-Age in the outer disc. We find that a late-time accretion with a delay of 8.2 Gyr and a timescale of 0.7 Gyr best fits the observed data, in particular the presence of the young, metal-poor sequence. Our best-fit model further implies that the amount of accreted gas in the late-time accretion event needs to be about three times the local gas reservoir in the outer disc at the time of accretion in order to sufficiently dilute the metal abundance. Given this large fraction, we interpret the late-time accretion event as a minor merger presumably with a gas-rich dwarf galaxy with a mass M_* < 10^9 M_Sun and a gas fraction of ~ 75 per cent., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The SuperCLuster Assisted Shear Survey (SuperCLASS) is a legacy programme using the e-MERLIN interferometric array. The aim is to observe the sky at L-band (1.4 GHz) to a r.m.s. of 7 uJy per beam over an area of ~1 square degree centred on the Abell 981 supercluster. The main scientific objectives of the project are: (i) to detect the effects of weak lensing in the radio in preparation for similar measurements with the Square Kilometre Array (SKA); (ii) an extinction free census of star formation and AGN activity out to z~1. In this paper we give an overview of the project including the science goals and multi-wavelength coverage before presenting the first data release. We have analysed around 400 hours of e-MERLIN data allowing us to create a Data Release 1 (DR1) mosaic of ~0.26 square degrees to the full depth. These observations have been supplemented with complementary radio observations from the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) and optical/near infra-red observations taken with the Subaru, Canada-France-Hawaii and Spitzer Telescopes. The main data product is a catalogue of 887 sources detected by the VLA, of which 395 are detected by e-MERLIN and 197 of these are resolved. We have investigated the size, flux and spectral index properties of these sources finding them compatible with previous studies. We describe the first results on weak gravitational lensing from the SuperCLASS survey: the first survey specifically designed to measure the weak lensing effect in radio-wavelength data, both alone and in cross-correlation with optical data. We analyse 1.53 square degrees of optical data from the Subaru telescope and 0.26 square degrees of radio data from the e-MERLIN and VLA telescopes (the DR1 data set). Using standard methodologies on the optical data only we make a significant (10 sigma) detection of the weak lensing signal (a shear power spectrum) due to the massive supercluster of galaxies in the targeted region. For the radio data we develop a new method to measure the shapes of galaxies from the interferometric data, and we construct a simulation pipeline to validate this method. We then apply this analysis to our radio observations, treating the e-MERLIN and VLA data independently. We achieve source densities of 0.5 per square arcmin in the VLA data and 0.06 per square arcmin in the e-MERLIN data, numbers which prove too small to allow a detection of a weak lensing signal in either the radio data alone or in cross-correlation with the optical data. Finally, we show preliminary results from a visibility-plane combination of the data from e-MERLIN and VLA which will be used for the forthcoming full SuperCLASS data release. This approach to data combination is expected to enhance both the number density of weak lensing sources available and the fidelity with which their shapes can be measured., Comment: 25 pages, 18 figures, 3 tables. We perform a joint analysis of the counts and weak lensing signal of redMaPPer clusters selected from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) Year 1 dataset. Our analysis uses the same shear and source photometric redshifts estimates as were used in the DES combined probes analysis. Our analysis results in surprisingly low values for $S_8 =\sigma_8(\Omega_{\rm m}/0.3)^{0.5}= 0.65\pm 0.04$, driven by a low matter density parameter, $\Omega_{\rm m}=0.179^{+0.031}_{-0.038}$, with $\sigma_8-\Omega_{\rm m}$ posteriors in $2.4\sigma$ tension with the DES Y1 3x2pt results, and in $5.6\sigma$ with the Planck CMB analysis. These results include the impact of post-unblinding changes to the analysis, which did not improve the level of consistency with other data sets compared to the results obtained at the unblinding. The fact that multiple cosmological probes (supernovae, baryon acoustic oscillations, cosmic shear, galaxy clustering and CMB anisotropies), and other galaxy cluster analyses all favor significantly higher matter densities suggests the presence of systematic errors in the data or an incomplete modeling of the relevant physics. Cross checks with X-ray and microwave data, as well as independent constraints on the observable--mass relation from SZ selected clusters, suggest that the discrepancy resides in our modeling of the weak lensing signal rather than the cluster abundance. Repeating our analysis using a higher richness threshold ($\lambda \ge 30$) significantly reduces the tension with other probes, and points to one or more richness-dependent effects not captured by our model., Comment: 35 pages, 20 figures, submitted to Physical Review D

This paper documents the sixteenth data release (DR16) from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys; the fourth and penultimate from the fourth phase (SDSS-IV). This is the first release of data from the southern hemisphere survey of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 (APOGEE-2); new data from APOGEE-2 North are also included. DR16 is also notable as the final data release for the main cosmological program of the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS), and all raw and reduced spectra from that project are released here. DR16 also includes all the data from the Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey (TDSS) and new data from the SPectroscopic IDentification of ERosita Survey (SPIDERS) programs, both of which were co-observed on eBOSS plates. DR16 has no new data from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey (or the MaNGA Stellar Library "MaStar"). Within the standard model of hierarchical galaxy formation in a {\Lambda}CDM Universe, the environment of galaxies is expected to play a key role in driving galaxy formation and evolution. In this paper we investigate whether and how the gas metallicity and the star formation surface density ({\Sigma}_SFR) depend on galaxy environment. To this end we analyse a sample of 1162 local, star-forming galaxies from the galaxy survey Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA). Generally, both parameters do not show any significant dependence on environment. However, in agreement with previous studies, we find that low-mass satellite galaxies are an exception to this rule. The gas metallicity in these objects increases while their {\Sigma}SFR decreases slightly with environmental density. The present analysis of MaNGA data allows us to extend this to spatially resolved properties. Our study reveals that the gas metallicity gradients of low-mass satellites flatten and their {\Sigma}SFR gradients steepen with increasing environmental density. By extensively exploring a chemical evolution model, we identify two scenarios that are able to explain this pattern: metal-enriched gas accretion or pristine gas inflow with varying accretion timescales. The latter scenario better matches the observed {\Sigma}SFR gradients, and is therefore our preferred solution. In this model, a shorter gas accretion timescale at larger radii is required. This suggests that 'outside-in quenching' governs the star formation processes of low-mass satellite galaxies in dense environments., Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures. MNRAS in press

The Simons Observatory (SO) is a ground-based cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiment sited on Cerro Toco in the Atacama Desert in Chile that promises to provide breakthrough discoveries in fundamental physics, cosmology, and astrophysics. Supported by the Simons Foundation, the Heising-Simons Foundation, and with contributions from collaborating institutions, SO will see first light in 2021 and start a five year survey in 2022. SO has 287 collaborators from 12 countries and 53 institutions, including 85 students and 90 postdocs. The SO experiment in its currently funded form ('SO-Nominal') consists of three 0.4 m Small Aperture Telescopes (SATs) and one 6 m Large Aperture Telescope (LAT). Optimized for minimizing systematic errors in polarization measurements at large angular scales, the SATs will perform a deep, degree-scale survey of 10% of the sky to search for the signature of primordial gravitational waves. The LAT will survey 40% of the sky with arc-minute resolution. These observations will measure (or limit) the sum of neutrino masses, search for light relics, measure the early behavior of Dark Energy, and refine our understanding of the intergalactic medium, clusters and the role of feedback in galaxy formation. With up to ten times the sensitivity and five times the angular resolution of the Planck satellite, and roughly an order of magnitude increase in mapping speed over currently operating ("Stage 3") experiments, SO will measure the CMB temperature and polarization fluctuations to exquisite precision in six frequency bands from 27 to 280 GHz. The late assembly of massive galaxies is thought to be dominated by stellar accretion in their outskirts (beyond 2 effective radii Re) due to dry, minor galaxy mergers. We use observations of 1010 passive early-type galaxies (ETGs) within z<0.15 from SDSS IV MaNGA to search for evidence of this accretion. The outputs from the stellar population fitting codes FIREFLY, pPXF, and Prospector are compared to control for systematic errors in stellar metallicity (Z) estimation. We find that the average radial logZ/Zsun profiles of ETGs in various stellar mass (M) bins are not linear. As a result, these profiles are poorly characterized by a single gradient value, explaining why weak trends reported in previous work can be difficult to interpret. Instead, we examine the full radial extent of stellar metallicity profiles and find them to flatten in the outskirts of M>10^{11}Msun ETGs. This is a signature of stellar accretion. Based on a toy model for stellar metallicity profiles, we infer the ex-situ stellar mass fraction in ETGs as a function of M and galactocentric radius. We find that ex-situ stars at 2Re make up 20% of the projected stellar mass of M<10^{10.5}Msun ETGs, rising up to 80% for M>10^{11.5}Msun ETGs., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 13 pages, 6 figures. Future CMB experiments will require exquisite control of systematics in order to constrain the $B$-mode polarisation power spectrum. One class of systematics that requires careful study is instrumental systematics. The potential impact of such systematics is most readily understood by considering analysis pipelines based on pair differencing. In this case, any differential gain, pointing or beam ellipticity between the two detectors in a pair can result in intensity leakage into the $B$-mode spectrum, which needs to be controlled to a high precision due to the much greater magnitude of the total intensity signal as compared to the $B$-mode signal. One well known way to suppress such systematics is through careful design of the scan-strategy, in particular making use of any capability to rotate the instrument about its pointing (boresight) direction. Here, we show that the combination of specific choices of such partial boresight rotation angles with redundancies present in the scan strategy is a powerful approach for suppressing systematic effects. This mitigation can be performed in analysis in advance of map-making and, in contrast to other approaches (e.g. deprojection or filtering), results in no signal loss. We demonstrate our approach explicitly with time ordered data simulations relevant to next-generation ground-based CMB experiments, using deep and wide scan strategies appropriate for experiments based in Chile. These simulations show a reduction of multiple orders of magnitude in the spurious $B$-mode signal arising from differential gain and differential pointing systematics., Comment: 6 figures. Constraints on the properties of the cosmological dark matter have previously been obtained in a model-independent fashion using the Generalised Dark Matter (GDM) framework. Here we extend that work in several directions: We consider the inclusion of WiggleZ matter power spectrum data, and show that this improves the constraints on the two perturbative GDM parameters, $c^2_s$ and $c^2_\text{vis}$, by a factor of 3, for a conservative choice of wavenumber range. A less conservative choice can yield an improvement of up to an order of magnitude compared to previous constraints. In order to examine the robustness of this result we develop a GDM halo model to explore how non-linear structure formation could proceed in this framework, since currently GDM has only been defined perturbatively and only linear theory has been used when generating constraints. We then examine how the halo model affects the constraints obtained from the matter power spectrum data. The less-conservative wavenumber range shows a significant difference between linear and non-linear modelling, with the latter favouring GDM parameters inconsistent with $\Lambda$CDM, underlining the importance of careful non-linear modelling when using this data. We also use this halo model to establish the robustness of previously obtained constraints, particularly those that involve weak gravitational lensing of the cosmic microwave background. We use a sample of ~3000 galaxies from the MaNGA MPL-7 internal data release to study the alpha abundance distribution within low-redshift galaxies. We use the Lick index ratio Mgb/ as an alpha abundance indicator to study relationships between the alpha abundance distribution and galaxy properties such as effective stellar velocity dispersion within 0.3 effective radii (sigma_*), galaxy environment, and dark matter halo formation time (z_f). We find that (1) all galaxies show a tight correlation between Mgb/ and sigma_*; (2) `old' (H_beta < 3) low-sigma_* galaxies in high local density environment and inner regions within galaxy groups are enhanced in Mgb/, while `young' (H_beta>3) galaxies and high-mass galaxies show no or less environmental dependence; (3) `old' galaxies with high-z_f show enhanced Mgb/ over low- and medium-z_f; (4) Mgb/ gradients are close to zero and show dependence on sigma_* but no obvious dependence on the environment or z_f. Our study indicates that stellar velocity dispersion or galaxy mass is the main parameter driving the Mgb/ enhancement, although environments appear to have modest effects, particularly for low- and medium-mass galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) is acquiring integral-field spectroscopy for the largest sample of galaxies to date. By 2020, the MaNGA Survey --- one of three core programs in the fourth-generation Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV) --- will have observed a statistically representative sample of 10$^4$ galaxies in the local Universe ($z\lesssim0.15$). In addition to a robust data-reduction pipeline (DRP), MaNGA has developed a data-analysis pipeline (DAP) that provides higher-level data products. To accompany the first public release of its code base and data products, we provide an overview of the MaNGA DAP, including its software design, workflow, measurement procedures and algorithms, performance, and output data model. In conjunction with our companion paper Belfiore et al., we also assess the DAP output provided for 4718 observations of 4648 unique galaxies in the recent SDSS Data Release 15 (DR15). These analysis products focus on measurements that are close to the data and require minimal model-based assumptions. Namely, we provide stellar kinematics (velocity and velocity dispersion), emission-line properties (kinematics, fluxes, and equivalent widths), and spectral indices (e.g., D4000 and the Lick indices). We find that the DAP provides robust measurements and errors for the vast majority ($>$99%) of analyzed spectra. We summarize assessments of the precision and accuracy of our measurements as a function of signal-to-noise, and provide specific guidance to users regarding the limitations of the data. SDSS-IV MaNGA (Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory) is the largest integral-field spectroscopy survey to date, aiming to observe a statistically representative sample of 10,000 low-redshift galaxies. In this paper we study the reliability of the emission-line fluxes and kinematic properties derived by the MaNGA Data Analysis Pipeline (DAP). We describe the algorithmic choices made in the DAP with regards to measuring emission-line properties, and the effect of our adopted strategy of simultaneously fitting the continuum and line emission. The effect of random errors are quantified by studying various fit-quality metrics, idealized recovery simulations and repeat observations. This analysis demonstrates that the emission lines are well-fit in the vast majority of the MaNGA dataset and the derived fluxes and errors are statistically robust. The systematic uncertainty on emission-line properties introduced by the choice of continuum templates is also discussed. In particular, we test the effect of using different stellar libraries and simple stellar-population models on the derived emission-line fluxes and the effect of introducing different tying prescriptions for the emission-line kinematics. We show that these effects can generate large ($>$ 0.2 dex) discrepancies at low signal-to-noise and for lines with low equivalent width (EW); however, the combined effect is noticeable even for H$\alpha$ EW $>$ 6~\AA. We provide suggestions for optimal use of the data provided by SDSS data release 15 and propose refinements on the \DAP\ for future MaNGA data releases., Comment: accepted on AJ

Twenty years have passed since first light for the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Here, we release data taken by the fourth phase of SDSS (SDSS-IV) across its first three years of operation (July 2014-July 2017). This is the third data release for SDSS-IV, and the fifteenth from SDSS (Data Release Fifteen; DR15). New data come from MaNGA - we release 4824 datacubes, as well as the first stellar spectra in the MaNGA Stellar Library (MaStar), the first set of survey-supported analysis products (e.g. stellar and gas kinematics, emission line, and other maps) from the MaNGA Data Analysis Pipeline (DAP), and a new data visualisation and access tool we call "Marvin". The next data release, DR16, will include new data from both APOGEE-2 and eBOSS; those surveys release no new data here, but we document updates and corrections to their data processing pipelines. The release is cumulative; it also includes the most recent reductions and calibrations of all data taken by SDSS since first light. In this paper we describe the location and format of the data and tools and cite technical references describing how it was obtained and processed. The SDSS website (www.sdss.org) has also been updated, providing links to data downloads, tutorials and examples of data use. While SDSS-IV will continue to collect astronomical data until 2020, and will be followed by SDSS-V (2020-2025), we end this paper by describing plans to ensure the sustainability of the SDSS data archive for many years beyond the collection of data., Comment: Paper to accompany DR15. 25 pages, 6 figures.
