Since the Voyager mission flybys in 1979, we have known the moon Io to be extremely volcanically active as well as to be the main source of plasma in the vast magnetosphere of Jupiter. Material lost from Io forms neutral clouds, the Io plasma torus and ultimately the extended plasma sheet. This material is supplied from the upper atmosphere and atmospheric loss is likely driven by plasma-interaction effects with possible contributions from thermal escape and photochemistry-driven escape. Direct volcanic escape is negligible. The supply of material to maintain the plasma torus was estimated from various methods at roughly one ton per second. Most of the time the magnetospheric plasma environment of Io is stable on timescales from days to months. Similarly, Io's atmosphere was found to have a stable average density on the dayside, although it exhibits lateral, diurnal and seasonal variations. There is a potential positive feedback in the Io torus supply: collisions of torus plasma with atmospheric neutrals likely are a significant loss process, which increases with torus density. The stability of the torus environment might be maintained by limiting mechanisms of either torus supply from Io or the loss from the torus by centrifugal interchange in the middle magnetosphere. Various observations suggest that occasionally the plasma torus undergoes major transient changes over a period of several weeks, apparently overcoming possible stabilizing mechanisms. Such events (and more frequent minor changes) are commonly explained by some kind of change in volcanic activity that triggers a chain of reactions which modify the plasma torus state via a net increase in supply of new mass. However, it remains unknown what kind of volcanic event can trigger torus events, whether Io's atmosphere undergoes a change before or during such magnetospheric events, and what processes could enable such a change.

A stellar occultation by Neptune's main satellite, Triton, was observed on 5 October 2017 from Europe, North Africa, and the USA. We derived 90 light curves from this event, 42 of which yielded a central flash detection. We aimed at constraining Triton's atmospheric structure and the seasonal variations of its atmospheric pressure since the Voyager 2 epoch (1989). We also derived the shape of the lower atmosphere from central flash analysis. We used Abel inversions and direct ray-tracing code to provide the density, pressure, and temperature profiles in the altitude range $\sim$8 km to $\sim$190 km, corresponding to pressure levels from 9 {\mu}bar down to a few nanobars. Results. (i) A pressure of 1.18$\pm$0.03 {\mu}bar is found at a reference radius of 1400 km (47 km altitude). (ii) A new analysis of the Voyager 2 radio science occultation shows that this is consistent with an extrapolation of pressure down to the surface pressure obtained in 1989. (iii) A survey of occultations obtained between 1989 and 2017 suggests that an enhancement in surface pressure as reported during the 1990s might be real, but debatable, due to very few high S/N light curves and data accessible for reanalysis. The volatile transport model analysed supports a moderate increase in surface pressure, with a maximum value around 2005-2015 no higher than 23 {\mu}bar. The pressures observed in 1995-1997 and 2017 appear mutually inconsistent with the volatile transport model presented here. (iv) The central flash structure does not show evidence of an atmospheric distortion. Following the detection of CO and HCN in Pluto's atmosphere, we report on new ALMA observations of Pluto with two main goals: (i) obtaining spatially-resolved measurements (~0.06'' on the ~0.15'' disk subtended by Pluto and its atmosphere) of CO(3-2) and HCN(4-3) (ii) targetting new chemical compounds, primarily hydrogen isocyanide (HNC). The CO line shows an absorption core at beam positions within Pluto's disk, a direct signature of Pluto's cold mesosphere. Analysis provides tentative evidence for a non-uniform temperature field in the lower atmosphere (near 30 km), with summer pole latitudes being 7$\pm$3.5 K warmer than low latitudes. This unexpected result may point to shorter radiative timescales in the atmosphere than previously thought. The HCN emission is considerably more extended than CO, peaking at radial distances beyond Pluto limb, and providing a new method to determine Pluto's HCN vertical profile in 2017. The mean (column-averaged) location of HCN is at 690+/-75 km altitude, with an upper atmosphere (> 800 km) mixing ratio of ~ 1.8 x 10$^{-4}$. Little or no HCN (<5 x 10$^{-9}$ at 65 km) is present in the lower atmosphere, implying undersaturation of HCN there. The HCN emission appears enhanced above the low-latitude limb, but interpretation, in terms of an enhanced HCN abundance or a warmer upper atmosphere there, is uncertain. The first detection of HNC is reported, with a (7.0$\pm$2.1) x 10$^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$ column density, referred to Pluto surface, and a HNC / HCN ratio of 0.095+/-0.026, very similar to their values in Titan's atmosphere. We also obtain upper limits on CH3CN (< 2.6 x 10$^{13}$ cm$^{-2}$) and CH$_3$CCH (< 8.5 x 10$^{14}$ cm$^{-2}$); the latter value is inconsistent with the reported detection of CH$_3$CCH from New Horizons. The Kuiper Belt is a distant region of the Solar System. On 1 January 2019, the New Horizons spacecraft flew close to (486958) 2014 MU69, a Cold Classical Kuiper Belt Object, a class of objects that have never been heated by the Sun and are therefore well preserved since their formation. Here we describe initial results from these encounter observations. MU69 is a bi-lobed contact binary with a flattened shape, discrete geological units, and noticeable albedo heterogeneity. However, there is little surface color and compositional heterogeneity. No evidence for satellites, ring or dust structures, gas coma, or solar wind interactions was detected. By origin MU69 appears consistent with pebble cloud collapse followed by a low velocity merger of its two lobes., Comment: 43 pages, 8 figure

Winds in Titan's lower and middle atmosphere have been determined by a variety of techniques, including direct measurements from the Huygens Probe over 0-150 km, Doppler shifts of molecular spectral lines in the optical, thermal infrared and mm ranges, probing altogether the ~100-450 km altitude range, and inferences from thermal field over 10 mbar - 10 -3 mbar (i.e. ~100-500 km) and from central flashes in stellar occultation curves. These measurements predominantly indicated strong prograde winds, reaching maximum speeds of ~150-200 m/s in the upper stratosphere, with important latitudinal and seasonal variations. However, these observations provided incomplete atmospheric sounding; in particular, the wind regime in Titan's upper mesosphere and thermosphere (500- 1200 km) has remained unconstrained so far. Here we report direct wind measurements based on Doppler shifts of six molecular species observed with ALMA. We show that unlike expectations, strong prograde winds extend up to the thermosphere, with the circulation progressively turning into an equatorial jet regime as altitude increases, reaching ~340 m/s at 1000 km. We suggest that these winds may represent the dynamical response of forcing by waves launched at upper stratospheric/mesospheric levels and/or magnetospheric-ionospheric interaction. Pluto's atmospheric haze settles out rapidly compared with geological timescales. It needs to be accounted for as a surface material, distinct from Pluto's icy bedrock and from the volatile ices that migrate via sublimation and condensation on seasonal timescales. This paper explores how a steady supply of atmospheric haze might affect three distinct provinces on Pluto. We pose the question of why they each look so different from one another if the same haze material is settling out onto all of them. Cthulhu is a more ancient region with comparatively little present-day geological activity, where the haze appears to simply accumulate over time. Sputnik Planitia is a very active region where glacial convection, as well as sublimation and condensation rapidly refresh the surface, hiding recently deposited haze from view. Lowell Regio is a region of intermediate age featuring very distinct coloration from the rest of Pluto. Using a simple model haze particle as a colorant, we are not able to match the colors in both Lowell Regio and Cthulhu. To account for their distinct colors, we propose that after arrival at Pluto's surface, haze particles may be less inert than might be supposed from the low surface temperatures. They must either interact with local materials and environments to produce distinct products in different regions, or else the supply of haze must be non-uniform in time and/or location, such that different products are delivered to different places.

Using Chandra ACIS-S, we have obtained imaging Xray spectrophotometry of the Pluto system in support of the New Horizons flyby on 14 July 2015. 174 ksec of observations were obtained on 4 visits in Feb 2014 to Aug 2015. We measured a net signal of 6.8 counts and a noise level of 1.2 counts in a comoving 11 x 11 pixel box (100 x 100 R_Pluto) in the 0.31 to 0.60 keV passband for a detection at > 99.95 C.L. The Pluto photons do not match the background spectrum, are coincident with a 90% flux aperture comoving with Pluto, and are not sky source confused. The mean 0.31 to 0.60 keV Xray power from Pluto is 200 MW, in the midrange of Xray power levels seen for known solar system emission sources: auroral precipitation, solar Xray scattering, and charge exchange (CXE) between solar wind (SW) ions & atmospheric neutrals. We eliminate auroral effects as a source, as Pluto has no known magnetic field & the New Horizons Alice UV spectrometer detected no airglow from Pluto during the flyby. Nano-scale atmospheric haze particles could lead to enhanced resonant scattering of solar X-rays from Pluto, but the energy signature of the detected photons does not match the solar spectrum and estimates of Plutos scattered Xray emission are > 100 times below the 3.9e-5 cps found in our observations. CXE emission from SW carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen ions can produce the energy signature seen, and the 6e25 neutral gas escape rate from Pluto deduced from New Horizons data can support the 3.0e24 Xray photons/sec emission rate required by our observations. Using the SW proton density and speed measured by the Solar Wind Around Pluto (SWAP) instrument in the vicinity of Pluto at the time of the photon emissions, we find too few SW minor ions flowing into the 11 x 11 pixel box centered on Pluto than are needed to support the observed emission rate unless the SW is significantly focused and enhanced in this region., Comment: 17 Pages, 3 Figures, 2 Tables Key words: Pluto, Chandra, Atmospheres, Coma, Solar Wind, Charge Exchange Spectroscopy, X-rays

Observations of the Pluto-Charon system, acquired with the ALMA interferometer on June 12-13, 2015, have yielded a detection of the CO(3-2) and HCN(4-3) rotational transitions from Pluto, providing a strong confirmation of the presence of CO, and the first observation of HCN, in Pluto's atmosphere. The CO and HCN lines probe Pluto's atmosphere up to ~450 km and ~900 km altitude, respectively. The CO detection yields (i) a much improved determination of the CO mole fraction, as 515+/-40 ppm for a 12 ubar surface pressure (ii) clear evidence for a well-marked temperature decrease (i.e., mesosphere) above the 30-50 km stratopause and a best-determined temperature of 70+/-2 K at 300 km, in agreement with recent inferences from New Horizons / Alice solar occultation data. The HCN line shape implies a high abundance of this species in the upper atmosphere, with a mole fraction >1.5x10-5 above 450 km and a value of 4x10-5 near 800 km. The large HCN abundance and the cold upper atmosphere imply supersaturation of HCN to a degree (7-8 orders of magnitude) hitherto unseen in planetary atmospheres, probably due to the slow kinetics of condensation at the low pressure and temperature conditions of Pluto's upper atmosphere. HCN is also present in the bottom ~100 km of the atmosphere, with a 10-8 - 10-7 mole fraction; this implies either HCN saturation or undersaturation there, depending on the precise stratopause temperature. The HCN column is (1.6+/-0.4)x10^14 cm-2, suggesting a surface-referred net production rate of ~2x10^7 cm-2s-1. Although HCN rotational line cooling affects Pluto's atmosphere heat budget, the amounts determined in this study are insufficient to explain the well-marked mesosphere and upper atmosphere's ~70 K temperature. The New Horizons spacecraft carried three instruments that measured the space environment near Pluto as it flew by on 14 July 2015. The Solar Wind Around Pluto instrument revealed an interaction region confined sunward of Pluto to within about 6 Pluto radii. The surprisingly small size is consistent with a reduced atmospheric escape rate as well as a particularly high solar wind flux. The Pluto Energetic Particle Spectrometer Science Investigation (PEPSSI) observations suggested ions are accelerated and-or deflected around Pluto. In the wake of the interaction region PEPSSI observed suprathermal particle fluxes about one tenth the flux in the interplanetary medium, increasing with distance downstream. The Student Dust Counter, which measures radius greater than 1.4 um grains, detected 1 candidate impact from 5days before to 5 days after closest approach, indicating an upper limit for the dust density in the Pluto system of 4.6 per cubic km.

The Pluto system was recently explored by NASA's New Horizons spacecraft, making closest approach on 14 July 2015. Pluto's surface displays diverse landforms, terrain ages, albedos, colors, and composition gradients. Evidence is found for a water-ice crust, geologically young surface units, surface ice convection, wind streaks, volatile transport, and glacial flow. Pluto's atmosphere is highly extended, with trace hydrocarbons, a global haze layer, and a surface pressure near 10 microbars. Pluto's diverse surface geology and long-term activity raise fundamental questions about how small planets remain active many billions of years after formation. Pluto's large moon Charon displays tectonics and evidence for a heterogeneous crustal composition, its north pole displays puzzling dark terrain. The NASA New Horizons spacecraft flies past Pluto on July 14, 2015, carrying two instruments that detect charged particles. Pluto has a tenuous, extended atmosphere that is escaping the weak gravity of the planet. The interaction of the solar wind with the escaping atmosphere of Pluto depends on solar wind conditions as well as the vertical structure of the atmosphere. We have analyzed Voyager 2 particles and fields measurements between 25 and 39 AU and present their statistical variations. We have adjusted these predictions to allow for the declining activity of the Sun and solar wind output. We summarize the range of SW conditions that can be expected at 33 AU and survey the range of scales of interaction that New Horizons might experience. Model estimates for the solar wind stand-off distance vary from approximately 7 to 1000 RP with our best estimate being around 40 RP (where we take the radius of Pluto to be RP=1184 km)., Comment: 29 pages, 9 Figures. We report on new Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) observations of Ganymede s auroral emissions obtained (to be obtained) during two visits with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The observations of the first visit, a five orbits, were obtained on November 19, 2010 and the second visit, also a five orbits, is scheduled for opposition in October/November 2011. We will present results of the full campaign, in case of a successful execution of the second visit. Our observations cover more than half a cycle of system III longitudes of Ganymede s positions within Jupiter s magnetosphere for each visit. We analyze the observations with respect to brightness and locations of Ganymede auroral ovals. Our goal is to set constrains on the interaction of Ganymede s mini-magnetosphere with Jupiter s magnetosphere, Ganymede s magnetic field and plasma environment, and if possible on Ganymede s neutral atmosphere.

The Composite Infrared Spectrometer observed Jupiter in the thermal infrared during the swing-by of the Cassini spacecraft. Results include the detection of two new stratospheric species, the methyl radical and diacetylene, gaseous species present in the north and south auroral infrared hot spots; determination of the variations with latitude of acetylene and ethane, the latter a tracer of atmospheric motion; observations of unexpected spatial distributions of carbon dioxide and hydrogen cyanide, both considered to be products of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 impacts; characterization of the morphology of the auroral infrared hot spot acetylene emission; and a new evaluation of the energetics of the northern auroral infrared hot spot.

The atmospheric structure of Triton in the altitude range 25-150 kilometers shows an unexpectedly steep thermal gradient of 0.26 K per kilometer above 50 kilometer altitude, with a nearly isothermal profile below. The upper part of the profile can be explained by downward conduction of heat deposited by magnetospheric electrons and solar UV. However, the atmospheric temperature below 50 kilometers is too cold for identified radiative processes to dispose of the inferred heat flux (0.0012 erg per square centimeter per second) from the upper atmosphere. This implies that either the atmosphere is not in a steady state and/or an unidentified cooling mechanism is at work in the altitude range 25-50 kilometers. When extrapolated to the surface, the inversion results yield a pressure of 19.0 sup (+1.8) sub (-1.5), mubar, about 5mubar greater than that observed by Voyager.

We present the first Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) satellite observation of the Jupiter system, obtained during the 2 day period 1993 March 30 through April 1, which shows a rich emission-line spectrum from the Io plasma torus spanning wavelengths 370 to 735 A. The emission features correspond primarily to known multiplets of oxygen and sulfur ions, but a blended feature near 372 A is a plausible Na II transition. The summed detected energy flux of (7.2 +/- 0.2) x 10(exp -11) ergs/sq cm(s) corresponds to a radiated power of approximately equal to 4 x 10(exp 11) W in this spectral range. All ansa emissions show a distinct dawn-dusk brightness asymmetry and the measured dusk/dawn ratio of the bright S III lambda-680 feature is 2.3 +/- 0.3, significantly larger than the ratio measured by the Voyager spacecraft ultraviolet (UV) instruments. A preliminary estimate of ion partitioning indicates that the oxygen/sulfur ion ratio is approximately equal to 2, compared to the value approximately equal to 1.3 measured by Voyager, and that (Na(+))/(e) greater than 0.01.

Sulfur ion emissions from the Io plasma torus observed by the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope (HUT) in 1990 December have been analyzed to determine the effective temperature of the exciting electrons. Spectra were obtained with a long slit that extended from 3.1 to 8.7 Jupiter radii R(sub J) on both dawn and dusk torus ansae. The average temperature of electrons exciting S(2+) emissions from the dawn ansa is (4800 +/- 2400) K lower than on the dusk ansa, a dawn-dusk asymmetry comparable in both sign and magnitude to that measured by the Voyager Ultraviolet Spectrograph (UVS) experiment. Emissions from S(2+) ions are generated in a source region with electron temperatures in the range 32,000-56,000 K; S(3+) ion emissions are excited by electrons that average 20,000-40,000 K hotter. This distinct difference suggests that the S(3+) emission source region is spatially separate from the S(2+) source region. Estimated relative aperture filling factors suggest that the S(3+) emissions originate from a region more extended out of the centrifugal plane than the S(2+) emissions.

Ultraviolet spectra of the Jovian equatorial dayglow in the spectral range 830-1850 A were obtained at about 3 A resolution. The observed spectrum is dominated by electron impact excitation of the H2 Lyman and Werner band systems. Solar Lyman-beta induced fluorescence in the (6, nu-double prime) Lyman band progression is clearly identified in five distinct P(1) lines, and the contribution of solar fluorescence to the total 2.3 kR slit-averaged H2 emission rate is estimated to be 17-22 percent. The electron excitation spectrum is characterized by a relative weakness of the Werner band system and the absence of cascade contributions to the Lyman system and is very similar to that of the south polar aurora. The integrated H2 emission rate in the 900-1100 A band is a factor of two lower than that measured by the Voyager UVS. Based on model calculations, photoelectron excitation does not appear able to account for the amount of observed electron-excited H2 emission.

An investigation is conducted in order to determine the relative importance of several modeled processes in controlling the magnitude and phase of the mesospheric ozone response. A detailed one-dimensional modeling study of the mesospheric ozone response to solar UV flux variations is conducted to remove some of the deficiencies in previous studies. This study is also used to examine specifically the importance of solar zenith angle, self-consistent calculation of water vapor abundance, and temperature feedback with a nonlocal thermodynamic equilibrium radiation model. The photochemical model is described, and the assumptions made for the purpose of comparing model results with the observed ozone response obtained from a statistical analysis of Solar Mesosphere Explorer data (Keating et al., 1987) are discussed. The numerical results for the theoretical ozone response are presented. The results of selected time-dependent calculations are considered to illustrate the degree to which a relatively simple model of the mesosphere is able to capture the major characteristics of the observed response.

A model of the atmospheric temperature structure and composition inferred from the Voyager (UVS) solar occultations was used together with a one-dimensional chemical diffusive model to interpret the Voyager Radio Science Spectrometer (RSS) ingress measurements of Triton's electron density. Although N2(+) is the major ion created, N(+) produced by dissociative ionization is the dominant ion. Reaction of thermospheric H2, produced by Lyman-alpha dissociation of CH4 in the lower atmosphere, is the major loss for N(+) ions and maintains these ions in PCSS below 600 km. Solar EUV ionization cannot generate electron densities at the magnitude measured by the RSS experiment and an additional ionization source about 3 x 10 to the 8th ions/sq cm per sec is required. The ionosphere may undergo a transition from PCSS to diffusive control if the N(+) ion production rates were greater than the H2 flux derived from CH4. In this case, the upward flowing H2 is totally converted to H by reaction with N(+) and the remaining N(+) ions recombine radiatively to create an ionosphere under diffusive control above the peak.

The wavelength-dependent absorption apparent in IUE spectra of the north Jovian aurora is analyzed to determine the column density of hydrocarbons above the altitude of the FUV auroral emission. Both the magnetotail and torus auroral zone models are considered in estimating zenith angles, with very similar results obtained for both models. It is found that the hydrocarbon column density above the FUV emission displays a consistent dependence on magnetic longitude, with the peak density occurring approximately coincident with the peak in the observed auroral intensity. Two distinct scenarios for the longitude dependence of the column density are discussed. In one, the Jovian upper atmosphere is longitudinally homogeneous, and the variation in optical depth is due to a variation in penetration, and thus energy, of the primary particles. In the other, the energy of the primaries is longitudinally homogeneous, and it is aeronomic properties which change, probably due to auroral heating.

From December 1986 until April 1987 ground-based microwave observations of the diurnal variation of mesospheric ozone were made over Bern, Switzerland. These data were of sufficient quality to define the characteristics diurnal behavior of the ozone mixing ratio during winter and equinoctial conditions. The observed diurnal variation of ozone peaks at about 74 km, where its amplitude is about a factor of 6. At 65 km the observed diurnal variation is a factor of 3, whereas at 55 km it is only a factor of 1.4. One-dimensional model calculations accurately reproduce the relative diurnal variation of ozone at equinox, suggesting that the model value of the ozone photolysis rate coefficient is accurate to better that 10 percent. For winter conditions, however, the model underpredicts the observed relative diurnal variation by a factor of 2; a major part of this discrepancy is due to an observed postmidnight increase in ozone. Various suggested changes in model parameters to better produce the ozone abundance vertical profile result in only small differences in the relative diurnal variation, indicating that these observations do not provide a sensitive test of the mesospheric chemistry controlling the abundance of odd oxygen.

A steady-state model of Io's exospheric corona and its interaction with the Io plasma torus is used to study the escape of species from Io's atmosphere. It is found that atmospheric sputtering is the major escape mechanism for models in which the plasma flow reaches the critical level, and that such models produce total mass-loading rates an order of magnitude larger than values inferred from observations. The results suggest the presence of an extended Na coronal component in the thermal exosphere, and are consistent with an O-dominated corona, an exospheric temperature of about 1000 K, an Na critical level mixing ratio of 0.001, and a critical level radius of about 1.5 Io radii.

Two of the main components of the atmosphere of Io, neutral oxygen and sulfur, were detected with the IUE. Four observations yield brightnesses that are similar, regardless of whether the upstream or the downstream sides of the torus plasma flow around Io is observed. A simple model requires the emissions to be produced by the interaction of O and S columns in the exospheric range with 2 eV electrons. Cooling of the 5 eV torus electrons is required prior to their interaction with the atmosphere of Io. Inconsistencies in the characteristics of the spectra that cannot be accounted for in this model require further analysis with improved atomic data. The Io plasma torus was monitored with the IUE. The long-term stability of the warm torus is established. The observed brightnesses were analyzed using a model of the torus, and variations of less than 30 percent in the composition are observed, the quantitative results being model dependent.

IUE spectra have shown several O I and S I emissions near Io. The optical thickness of the S I 1814 A multiplet indicates that the S column density is greater than about 2 x 10 to the 12th/sq cm. The presence of an S I 1479 A feature suggests that electron collisions with SO2 could be a major source of the emissions. It is likely that particle excitation in the denser collision-dominated part of the atmosphere is also responsible for a substantial part of the observed emissions.

A line at 1280 A, due to Raman scattering of solar Lyman alpha (Ly-alpha) in the atmosphere of Uranus, has been detected by the Voyager Ultraviolet Spectrometer. The measured intensity of 40 + or - 20 R implies that 200 R to 500 R of the measured 1500 R Ly-alpha intensity at the subsolar point is due to Rayleigh scattering of the solar line. The presence of Rayleigh and Raman scattering at 1216 A suggests that the Uranian atmosphere is largely devoid of absorbing hydrocarbons above the 0.5 mbar level. The most natural explanation of this depletion is very weak vertical mixing equivalent to an eddy coefficient on the order of 200 sq cm/sec between 0.5 mbar and 100 mbar.

An assessment is made of the development status of concepts for cloud and aerosol compositions, vertical and horizontal distributions, and microphysical properties, in the Jovian upper troposphere and stratosphere. Attention is given to several key photochemical species' relationships to aerosol formation as well as their transport process implications, treating photochemistry in the context of comparative planetology and noting differences and similarities among the outer planet atmospheres; since this approach emphasizes observational data, a variegated assortment of ground-based and spacecraft observations is assembled. Current views on the tropospheric distribution of clouds are challenged, and a rationale is presented for alternative accounts.

The constraints on turbulence improved by the mesospheric heat budget are reexamined, and the sufficiency of the theoretical evidence to support the hypothesis that the eddy Prandtl number is greater than one in the mesosphere is considered. The mesopause thermal structure is calculated with turbulent diffusion coefficients commonly used in chemical models and deduced from mean zonal wind deceleration. It is shown that extreme mesopause temperatures of less than 100 K are produced by the large net cooling. The results demonstrate the importance of the Prandtl number for mesospheric turbulence.

The Io plasma torus, which emits substantial amounts of EUV radiation from multiply ionized oxygen and sulfur, represents one of the significant discoveries of the Voyager 1 mission. The present study is concerned with the effects of various physical processes on the density and energy partitioning of the Io plasma torus. For the ions the dominant effects, which have different relative importance in different parameter regimes, are electron impact ionization, charge exchange, electron-ion collisions, and confinement time loss. Attention is given to a physical model, the solution of the quasi-linear equations, the obtained results, and an interpretation of observations in relation to the model results.

Breaking gravity waves generate and maintain a background level of turbulence which is capable of producing substantial cooling and/or heating in the upper mesosphere and lower thermosphere. The net thermodynamic effect of breaking gravity waves is critically dependent on the eddy Prandt number (P sub t) applicable to mesospheric turbulence. When P sub t is approximately 1, the calculations of the heat budget for the mesopause region imply that the globally averaged eddy or turbulent diffusion coefficient cannot exceed .000001 sq cm/s. This upper limit on turbulant diffusion applies to both potential temperature transport and chemically inert tracer transport when radiative damping is neglible. For chemically active species larger diffusion coefficients are permitted, because the effective eddy diffusion coefficient is increased by an additive term L/2 gamma (sup 2), where L is the chemical loss rate and gamma is the vertical wavenumber. For P sub t is approximately 4 to 6, the turbulent diffusion of momentum (D sub M) is sufficiently greater than the turbulent diffusion of heat (D sub H) that the conversion of gravity wave energy to heat with high efficiency nearly balances the divergence of the downward eddy heat flux in the wave breaking zone. Therefore the heat budget of the mesopause region would no longer provide a powerful and useful constraint on D sub H. If P sub t exceeds 6 with high efficiency for energy conversion to heat, gravity waves would heat the mesosphere throughout the wave breaking region.

The thermal structure and composition of Uranus, Neptune, Saturn, Jupiter, Titan, and Io are described. Molecular hydrogen is the dominant constituent in the atmosphere of the outer planets. The hydrogen and helium, methane, ammonia and phosphine, and carbon monoxide photochemical reactions of the outer planets are studied. The importance of Jupiter's lightning as a source of organic matter is examined. The aerosol and haze layers of the stratosphere of Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, and Uranus are observed. The photochemistry of Titan's atmosphere, which includes nitrogen, methane, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide reactions, is analyzed. The SO2 atmosphere on Io is discussed.

It is pointed out that Titan, which is the second largest satellite in the solar system, is considerably larger than Mercury. It is made unique by its dense atmosphere, which consists mainly of nitrogen, although a substantial component of methane is present. The basic properties of Titan are summarized in a table. Many of the data were obtained during the close pass of Voyager 1 in November 1980. The atmospheric temperature decreases from its surface value of 94 K at a pressure of 1500 mbar to a minimum of 71 K at a height of 42 km and a pressure of 128 mbar. Details of atmospheric composition and thermal structure are discussed, taking into account chemical identifications and abundances, the vertical temperature structure, the horizontal temperature and opacity structure, and the radiative equilibrium. The upper atmosphere composition and temperature is considered along with the properties of aerosols, and meteorology and atmospheric dynamics. Titan's interior has an average density of 1.88 g per cu cm. Attention is given to Titan's surface and interior, and its formation.

The steady state gravity wave model of Schoeberl et al. (1983) is extended to compute wave breaking by disturbances originating at the earth's surface. For winter and summer mean zonal wind profiles, no waves reach the mesosphere unless the absolute value of the zonally averaged perturbed zonal velocity minus c is greater than approximately 20 m/sec. Gravity waves with c = 0 can only reach the winter mesosphere if planetary scale waves are present in the troposphere and the lower stratosphere, to provide strong zonal wind channels for upward wave propagation. This results in nonzonal wave breaking in the mesosphere which could provide in situ forcing of planetary waves. Dissipation of gravity waves by molecular viscosity and conduction can provide significant deceleration and heating/cooling in the 85-105 km region.

The phosphine photochemistry on Saturn is studied with a 1D photochemical model. The PH3 concentration is rapidly depleted with height (scale height 3.5 km) in the upper troposphere. Formation of P, a probable precursor of P4, (a potential red chromophore in the atmosphere), is highly improbable unless the rate constant for the recombination reaction PH + H2 + M yields PH3 + M is less than 10 to the -41st cm exp 6/molecule-squared sec. Coupling of PH3 and hydrocarbon photochemistry, specifically the C2H2 catalyzed photodissociation of CH, is important. Column production rates of the organophosphorus compounds CH3PH2 and HCP of 3 x 10 to the 8th/sq cm sec are predicted, with potentially observable column densities of greater than 1 x 10 to the 17th/sq cm.

In the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere of Jupiter, translationally hot H atoms are produced in the photolysis of ammonia, phospine, and acetylene which react with methane to form methyl radicals. The latter combine with NH2 to form methylamine. It is presently shown that the combined production of methylamine and subsequent photolysis to HCN is unlikely to account for the HCN observed near Jupiter's tropopause. The recommendation of NH2 and C2H3 radicals to yield C2H5N, followed by photolysis to HCN, is the preferred path. An upper limit column density on CH3PH2 is estimated to be about 10 to the 13th/sq cm, as compared to 10 to the 15th/sq cm for CH3NH2.

The goal of the study is to calculate numerically the deceleration and heating caused by breaking gravity waves. The effect of the radiative dissipation of the wave is included as vertical-wavelength-dependent Newtonian cooling. The parameterization for zonal deceleration is extended by breaking gravity waves (Lindzen, 1981) to include the turbulent diffusion of heat and momentum. After describing the numerical model, the numerical results are presented and compared with the parameterizations in a noninteractive model of the mean zonal wind. Attention is then given to the transport of constituents by gravity waves and the attendant turbulent zone. It is noted that if gravity wave breaking were not an intermittent process, gravity wave stresses would produce an adiabatic mesosphere with a zonal mean velocity close to the phase speed of the breaking wave.

HCN formation in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere of Jupiter is presently modeled in terms of UV pyrolysis of the C2H5N isomer aziridine, which is a product of the NH2 and C2H3 radicals that originate from ammonia photolysis and the addition of H atoms to acetylene, respectively. The sensitivity of the HCN column density to the individual rate constants and the eddy diffusion coefficient profile is considered, along with the possibility that additional HCN-yielding pathways may exist. Both ammonia and phosphine are strongly depleted by photolysis.

A toroidal volume near Io's orbit is made luminous by multiple optical and ultraviolet line emissions excited by resonant scattering of sunlight and by electron collisions. These emitting atoms and ions have been lost from Io. The spectrophotometric measurements of these emissions and their physical interpretation are considered. It is now known that the flow of material from Io dominates the particle and energy budgets of the Jovian magnetosphere. The observed emitting species in the Io torus are examined, and the atomic clouds are discussed, taking into account morphology and kinematics, atomic cloud supply rates, ion-atom collisions, and charge-exchange collisions. Observations and studies concerning the plasma torus are reported, giving attention to the forbidden lines, the extreme ultraviolet lines, and aspects of ion temperature and spatial distribution. Two types of radial transport in the Io torus include the ballistic motion of neutrals escaping from Io and the cross-L transport of ions.

The original interest in an ionosphere on Jupiter was generated by the discovery of strong radio-frequency emissions at approximately 20 MHz which were thought to be plasma frequencies associated with Jupiter's ionosphere. The ionosphere of Jupiter provides a means to couple the magnetosphere to the atmosphere by virtue of its high conductivity and collisional interaction with the neutral atmosphere. The Pioneer and Voyager have provided direct measurements of profiles of electron concentration at selected locations on Jupiter. Attention is given to basic principles regarding the characteristics of the Jovian ionosphere, the ionization sources, aspects of ion recombination, ion chemistry, observations of Jupiter's ionosphere, the structure of Jupiter's upper atmosphere, and questions of ionospheric modeling. On the basis of the Pioneer and Voyager observations it appears that Jupiter's ionosphere and thermosphere undergo significant solar cycle changes.

Charge-exchange cross sections and their velocity dependence have been estimated for the most important reactions in the Io torus and exosphere. The methods used for calculating the cross sections are given and discussed in some detail. For symmetric-resonant single and double charge exchange, the cross sections are slowly varying functions of velocity. For inelastic charge-exchange collisions, the transition probabilities into a given final state can depend critically on velocity. Models are described which can be used to estimate both the most rapid charge-exchange processes and those states which play an important role. Calculated cross sections are used to obtain reaction rates as a function of radial position, demonstrating the importance of charge exchange in the inner torus. Charge-exchange reactions of torus ions with molecular species in Io's exosphere may yield a net supply of neutrals and plasma to the torus.

A computationally efficient two-stream parameterization of IR cooling is developed for a middle atmosphere dynamics model. The parameterization combines the monochromatic feature of an emissivity formulation with the computational simplicity of a single spatial integral to evaluate the monochromatic transfer equation. Calculations show strong radiative control of the mesopause region and the need for substantial deceleration of the mean zonal winds. Calculated temperatures show good agreement in the summer hemisphere where planetary wave activity is negligible, but in the polar night of the winter hemisphere they are about 30 K too cold, which suggests planetary wave heating must make up the deficit. With observed ozone densities, globally averaged radiative equilibrium temperatures in the 65-75 km region are too cold and an additional heat source about 1 K/day is required.

Measurements of Saturn's He 584 A dayglow and the CH4 density profile deduced from stellar occultation data near the homopause have been combined to infer an eddy diffusion coefficient of 8 + or - 4 x 10 to the 7th sq cm/s and a temperature of 125 + 40 or - 25 K near the homopause at Voyager 2 encounter. It appears that the eddy diffusion coefficient may have increased between the Voyager encounters. Saturn's H Ly-alpha dayglow is qualitatively compatible with this increase and the interpretation of the He 584 A dayglow and CH4 absorption measurement.

The chemistry and evolution of Titan's atmosphere are reviewed, in light of the scientific findings from the Voyager mission. It is argued that the present N2 atmosphere may be Titan's initial atmosphere, rather than one photochemically derived from an original NH3 atmosphere. The escape rate of hydrogen from Titan is controlled by photochemical production from hydrocarbons. CH4 is irreversibly converted to less hydrogen-rich hydrocarbons, which over geologic time accumulate on the surface to a layer thickness of about 0.5 km. Magnetospheric electrons interacting with Titan's exosphere may dissociate enough N2 into hot, escaping N atoms to remove about 0.2 of Titan's present atmosphere over geologic time. The energy dissipation of magnetospheric electrons exceeds solar EUV energy deposition in Titan's atmosphere by an order of magnitude, and is the principal driver of nitrogen photochemistry. The environmental conditions in Titan's upper atmosphere are favorable to building up complex molecules, particularly in the north polar cap region.

Most of the observed emission short of Lyman-alpha is shown to be accounted for by electron impact on N2 above 3600 km, in an analysis of Titan's EUV emission spectra obtained at the Voyager 1 encounter. It is determined that N2 is the major component of Titan's upper atmosphere, with 3900-km upper limit mixing ratios of NeI, ArI, CO, H2, and HI of 0.01, 0.06, 0.05, 0.06 and 0.1, respectively. Magnetospheric electron precipitation produces an average dayside electron density of about 3000/cu cm between 3600 and 4000 km, which is the region of bright limb emission, and magnetospheric electron impact dissociation of N2 generates an N atom escape rate of 3 x 10 to the 26th/sec from Titan's exosphere when Titan is within Saturn's magnetosphere.

It is inferred from observation of an occultation of the sun by Titan, using the Voyager 1 UV spectrometer, that temperatures are 176 + or - 20 K near the evening terminator and 196 + or - 20 K near the morning terminator, and that the major atmospheric constituent is N2, with a density of 2.7 + or - 0.2 x 10 to the 8th/cu cm at 3840 km. A layer of absorbing molecules, possibly polymers, is found near both morning and evening terminators. A photochemical model suggests that the homopause is located at 3500 + or - 70 km, with an eddy diffusion coefficient of 1(+2, -0.7) x 10 to the 8th/sq cm per sec, which decreases to about 1000 sq cm/sec in the lower stratosphere as N2 to the -2/3 power.

Observations of the system of neutrals and plasma surrounding Jupiter and originating at Io and their interpretation are reviewed, and related processes are discussed. The optical emission detected from the neutral cloud around Jupiter is treated, and results of measurements of the thermal electron density, the ion and electron temperatures are presented. The results of studies of the EUV emissions are considered, and the mechanisms and rates of ionization of neutral material to form the plasma torus are discussed along with the radial diffusion processes that transport plasma through and out of the torus. Finally, the competing plasma loss process of dielectronic recombination is addressed.

Combined analysis of helium (584 A) airglow and the atmospheric occultations of the star delta Scorpii imply a vertical mixing parameter in Saturn's upper atmosphere of K (eddy diffusion coefficient) of approximately 8 x 10 to the 7th sq cm per second, an order of magnitude more vigorous than mixing in Jupiter's upper atmosphere. Atmospheric H2 band absorption of starlight yields a preliminary temperature of 400 K in the exosphere and a temperature near the homopause of 200 K. Certain auroral emissions can be fully explained in terms of electron impact on H2, and auroral morphology suggests a link between the aurora and the Saturn kilometric radiation. Absolute optical depths have been determined for the entire C ring and parts of the A and B rings. A new eccentric ringlet has been detected in the C ring. The extreme ultraviolet reflectance of the rings is fairly uniform at 3.5 to 5 percent. Collisions may control the distribution of H in Titan's H torus, which has a total vertical extent of about 14 Saturn radii normal to the orbit plane.

Two-dimensional transport by linear waves is parameterized by wave velocity and temperature correlations and nonconservative properties of the atmosphere in a residual Eulerian framework. Explicit expressions derived for the eddy tracer flux vector are written in eddy diffusion tensor form, but it is demonstrated that strong coupling of chemistry and temperature through the rate constants, as is the case for ozone, requires additional terms proportional to the mixing ratio and not to its gradient. A variety of limiting cases are discussed. In the residual Eulerian framework the K(yz), K(zy) components are nonzero for a nonconservative atmosphere and/or a reactive tracer. Tracers have common transport coefficients in the limit where their chemistry is negligible in comparison to transience. It is shown that the usual one-dimensional vertical eddy diffusion continuity equation is rigorously valid only when the temperature dependence of the rate constants is negligible and the tracer has strong vertical stratification relative to its horizontal variability.

The observations of a number of objects by the Voyager EUV instruments are summarized. The summary is considered to demonstrate the wide ranging application of the EUV spectroscopy. It also marks an important step forward in spectrography and emphasizes the continuing importance of the search and discovery nature of spectroscopic techniques.

Hydrogen Lyman-alpha, helium and molecular hydrogen band ultraviolet emissions from Saturn and the Titan atmosphere are considered. The Saturn H2 band excitation mechanism, while qualitatively similar to that of Jupiter, is closely related to the solar flux. The occurrence of auroras at 80 deg latitude suggests an earth-like magnetotail activity. No ion emissions have been detected from the Saturn magnetosphere. Although nitrogen emissions excited by particles have been detected in the Titan dayglow and bright limb scans, no such emission has been detected from its dark atmosphere. Enhancement of the nitrogen emission is observed in the region of interaction between Saturn's corotating plasmasphere and the Titan atmosphere.
