Entanglement generation between remote qubit systems is the central tasks for quantum communication. Future quantum networks will have to be compatible with low-loss telecom bands and operate with large separation between qubit nodes. Single-click heralding schemes can be used to increase entanglement rates at the cost of needing an optically phase-synchronized architecture. In this paper we present such a phase synchronization scheme for a metropolitan quantum network, operating in the low-loss telecom L-band. To overcome various challenges such as communication delays and optical power limitations, the scheme consists of multiple tasks that are individually stabilized. We characterize each task, identify the main noise sources, motivate the design choices and describe the synchronization schemes. The performance of each of the tasks is quantified by a transfer-function measurement that investigates the frequency response and feedback bandwidth. Finally we investigate the resulting optical phase stability of the fully deployed system over a continuous period of 10 hours, reporting a short-term stability standard deviation of ${\sigma} \approx 30 \deg$ and a long-term stability of the average optical phase to within a few degrees. The scheme presented served as a key enabling technology for an NV-center based metropolitan quantum link. A key challenge towards future quantum internet technology is connecting quantum processors at metropolitan scale. Here, we report on heralded entanglement between two independently operated quantum network nodes separated by 10km. The two nodes hosting diamond spin qubits are linked with a midpoint station via 25km of deployed optical fiber. We minimize the effects of fiber photon loss by quantum frequency conversion of the qubit-native photons to the telecom L-band and by embedding the link in an extensible phase-stabilized architecture enabling the use of the loss-resilient single-photon entangling protocol. By capitalizing on the full heralding capabilities of the network link in combination with real-time feedback logic on the long-lived qubits, we demonstrate the delivery of a predefined entangled state on the nodes irrespective of the heralding detection pattern. We report on a quantum interface linking a diamond NV center quantum network node and 795nm photonic time-bin qubits compatible with Thulium and Rubidium quantum memories. The interface makes use of two-stage low-noise quantum frequency conversion and waveform shaping to match temporal and spectral photon profiles. Two-photon quantum interference shows high indistinguishability of (89.5 $\pm$ 1.9)% between converted 795nm photons and the native NV center photons. We use the interface to demonstrate quantum teleportation including real-time feedforward from an unbiased set of 795nm photonic qubit input states to the NV center spin qubit, achieving a teleportation fidelity of (75.5 $\pm$ 1.0)%. This proof-of-concept experiment shows the feasibility of interconnecting different quantum network hardware.

Current and upcoming large optical and near-infrared astronomical surveys have fundamental science as their primary drivers. To cater to those, these missions scan large fractions of the entire sky at multiple wavelengths and epochs. These aspects make these data sets also valuable for investigations into astronomical hazards for life on Earth. The Netherlands Research School for Astronomy (NOVA) is a partner in several optical / near-infrared surveys. In this paper we focus on the astronomical hazard value for two sets of those: the surveys with the OmegaCAM wide-field imager at the VST and with the Euclid Mission. For each of them we provide a brief overview of the astronomical survey hardware, the data and the information systems. We present first results related to the astronomical hazard investigations. A numerical semigroup is a cofinite subset of the non-negative integers that is closed under addition and contains 0. Each numerical semigroup $S$ with fixed smallest positive element $m$ corresponds to an integer point in a rational polyhedral cone $\mathcal C_m$, called the Kunz cone. Moreover, numerical semigroups corresponding to points in the same face $F \subseteq \mathcal C_m$ are known to share many properties, such as the number of minimal generators. In this work, we classify which faces of $\mathcal C_m$ contain points corresponding to numerical semigroups. Additionally, we obtain sharp bounds on the number of minimal generators of $S$ in terms of the dimension of the face of $\mathcal C_m$ containing the point corresponding to $S$.

Entanglement distribution over quantum networks has the promise of realizing fundamentally new technologies. Entanglement between separated quantum processing nodes has been achieved on several experimental platforms in the past decade. To move towards metropolitan-scale quantum network test beds, the creation and transmission of indistinguishable single photons over existing telecom infrastructure is key. Here we report the interference of photons emitted by remote, spectrally detuned NV center-based network nodes, using quantum frequency conversion to the telecom L-band. We find a visibility of 0.79$\pm$0.03 and an indistinguishability between converted NV photons around 0.9 over the full range of the emission duration, confirming the removal of the spectral information present. Our approach implements fully separated and independent control over the nodes, time-multiplexing of control and quantum signals, and active feedback to stabilize the output frequency. Scaling current quantum communication demonstrations to a large-scale quantum network will require not only advancements in quantum hardware capabilities, but also robust control of such devices to bridge the gap to user demand. Moreover, the abstraction of tasks and services offered by the quantum network should enable platform-independent applications to be executed without knowledge of the underlying physical implementation. Here we experimentally demonstrate, using remote solid-state quantum network nodes, a link layer and a physical layer protocol for entanglement-based quantum networks. The link layer abstracts the physical-layer entanglement attempts into a robust, platform-independent entanglement delivery service. The system is used to run full state tomography of the delivered entangled states, as well as preparation of a remote qubit state on a server by its client. Time-harmonic solutions to the wave equation can be computed in the frequency or in the time domain. In the frequency domain, one solves a discretized Helmholtz equation, while in the time domain, the periodic solutions to a discretized wave equation are sought, e.g. by simulating for a long time with a time-harmonic forcing term. Disadvantages of the time-domain method are that the solutions are affected by temporal discretization errors and that the spatial discretization cannot be freely chosen, since it is inherited from the time-domain scheme. In this work we address these issues. Given an indefinite linear system satisfying certain properties, a matrix recurrence relation is constructed, such that in the limit the exact discrete solution is obtained. By iterating a large, finite number of times, an approximate solution is obtained, similarly as in a time-domain method for the Helmholtz equation. To improve the convergence, the process is used as a preconditioner for GMRES, and the time-harmonic forcing term is multiplied by a smooth window function. The construction is applied to a compact-stencil finite-difference discretization of the Helmholtz equation, for which previously no time-domain solver was available. With the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, the political and the medical aspects of disinformation merged as the problem got elevated to a whole new level to become the first global infodemic. Fighting this infodemic has been declared one of the most important focus areas of the World Health Organization, with dangers ranging from promoting fake cures, rumors, and conspiracy theories to spreading xenophobia and panic. Addressing the issue requires solving a number of challenging problems such as identifying messages containing claims, determining their check-worthiness and factuality, and their potential to do harm as well as the nature of that harm, to mention just a few. To address this gap, we release a large dataset of 16K manually annotated tweets for fine-grained disinformation analysis that (i) focuses on COVID-19, (ii) combines the perspectives and the interests of journalists, fact-checkers, social media platforms, policy makers, and society, and (iii) covers Arabic, Bulgarian, Dutch, and English. As intelligent systems are increasingly capable of performing their tasks without the need for continuous human input, direction, or supervision, new human-machine interaction concepts are needed. A promising approach to this end is human-agent teaming, which envisions a novel interaction form where humans and machines behave as equal team partners. This paper presents an overview of the current state of the art in human-agent teaming, including the analysis of human-agent teams on five dimensions; a framework describing important teaming functionalities; a technical architecture, called SAIL, supporting social human-agent teaming through the modular implementation of the human-agent teaming functionalities; a technical implementation of the architecture; and a proof-of-concept prototype created with the framework and architecture. We report on the use of elliptical pump spatial modes to increase the observed brightness of spontaneous parametric downconversion in critically phase matched crystals. Simulations qualitatively predict this improvement which depends on the eccentricity and orientation of the pump ellipse. We experimentally confirm a factor of two improvement in brightness when compared to the traditional circular-symmetric pump spatial modes. Quantum communication brings radically new capabilities that are provably impossible to attain in any classical network. Here, we take the first step from a physics experiment to a fully fledged quantum internet system. We propose a functional allocation of a quantum network stack and construct the first physical and link layer protocols that turn ad-hoc physics experiments producing heralded entanglement between quantum processors into a well-defined and robust service. This lays the groundwork for designing and implementing scalable control and application protocols in platform-independent software. To design our protocol, we identify use cases, as well as fundamental and technological design considerations of quantum network hardware, illustrated by considering the state-of-the-art quantum processor platform available to us (Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) centers in diamond). Using a purpose built discrete-event simulator for quantum networks, we examine the robustness and performance of our protocol using extensive simulations on a super-computing cluster. We perform a full implementation of our protocol, where we successfully validate the physical simulation model against data gathered from the NV hardware. We first observe that our protocol is robust even in a regime of exaggerated losses of classical control messages with only little impact on the performance of the system.We proceed to study the performance of our protocols for 169 distinct simulation scenarios, including tradeoffs between traditional performance metrics such as throughput and the quality of entanglement. Magnetic resonance fingerprinting (MRF) is able to estimate multiple quantitative tissue parameters from a relatively short acquisition. The main characteristic of an MRF sequence is the simultaneous application of (a) transient states excitation and (b) highly undersampled $k$-space. Despite the promising empirical results obtained with MRF, no work has appeared that formally describes the combined impact of these two aspects on the reconstruction accuracy. In this paper, a mathematical model is derived that directly relates the time varying RF excitation and the $k$-space sampling to the spatially dependent reconstruction errors. A subsequent in-depth analysis identifies the mechanisms by which MRF sequence properties affect accuracy, providing a formal explanation of several empirically observed or intuitively understood facts. We present an experimental demonstration of a bright and high fidelity polarization entangled photon pair source. The source is constructed using two critically phase matched $\beta$-Barium Borate crystals with parallel optical axes and photon pairs are collected after filtering with a circular field-stop. Near unity fidelities are obtained with detected pair rates exceeding \SI{100000}{pairs/\s/\mW} approaching the brightness of practical quasi-phase matched entangled photon sources. We find that the brightness scales linearly with the crystal length. We present models supporting the experimental data and propose strategies for further improvement. The source design is a promising candidate for emerging quantum applications outside of laboratory environments.

We develop a new dispersion minimizing compact finite difference scheme for the Helmholtz equation in 2 and 3 dimensions. The scheme is based on a newly developed ray theory for difference equations. A discrete Helmholtz operator and a discrete operator to be applied to the source and the wavefields are constructed. Their coefficients are piecewise polynomial functions of $hk$, chosen such that phase and amplitude errors are minimal. The phase errors of the scheme are very small, approximately as small as those of the 2-D quasi-stabilized FEM method and substantially smaller than those of alternatives in 3-D, assuming the same number of gridpoints per wavelength is used. In numerical experiments, accurate solutions are obtained in constant and smoothly varying media using meshes with only five to six points per wavelength and wave propagation over hundreds of wavelengths. When used as a coarse level discretization in a multigrid method the scheme can even be used with downto three points per wavelength. Tests on 3-D examples with up to $10^8$ degrees of freedom show that with a recently developed hybrid solver, the use of coarser meshes can lead to corresponding savings in computation time, resulting in good simulation times compared to the literature., Comment: 33 pages, 12 figures, 6 tables

In this paper we generalize and improve a recently developed domain decomposition preconditioner for the iterative solution of discretized Helmholtz equations. We introduce an improved method for transmission at the internal boundaries using perfectly matched layers. Simultaneous forward and backward sweeps are introduced, thereby improving the possibilities for parallellization. Finally, the method is combined with an outer two-grid iteration. The method is studied theoretically and with numerical examples. It is shown that the modifications lead to substantial decreases in computation time and memory use, so that computation times become comparable to that of the fastests methods currently in the literature for problems with up to 10^8 degrees of freedom., Comment: v4: minor changes; 26 pages, 4 figures, 9 tables

We study the convergence of multigrid schemes for the Helmholtz equation, focusing in particular on the choice of the coarse scale operators. Let G_c denote the number of points per wavelength at the coarse level. If the coarse scale solutions are to approximate the true solutions, then the oscillatory nature of the solutions implies the requirement G_c > 2. However, in examples the requirement is more like G_c >= 10, in a trade-off involving also the amount of damping present and the number of multigrid iterations. We conjecture that this is caused by the difference in phase speeds between the coarse and fine scale operators. Standard 5-point finite differences in 2-D are our first example. A new coarse scale 9-point operator is constructed to match the fine scale phase speeds. We then compare phase speeds and multigrid performance of standard schemes with a scheme using the new operator. The required G_c is reduced from about 10 to about 3.5, with less damping present so that waves propagate over > 100 wavelengths in the new scheme. Next we consider extensions of the method to more general cases. In 3-D comparable results are obtained with standard 7-point differences and optimized 27-point coarse grid operators, leading to an order of magnitude reduction in the number of unknowns for the coarsest scale linear system. Finally we show how to include PML boundary layers, using a regular grid finite element method. Matching coarse scale operators can easily be constructed for other discretizations. This paper provides a theoretical foundation for some common formulations of inverse problems in wave propagation, based on hyperbolic systems of linear integro-differential equations with bounded and measurable coefficients. The coefficients of these time-dependent partial differential equations respresent parametrically the spatially varying mechanical properties of materials. Rocks, manufactured materials, and other wave propagation environments often exhibit spatial heterogeneity in mechanical properties at a wide variety of scales, and coefficient functions representing these properties must mimic this heterogeneity. We show how to choose domains (classes of nonsmooth coefficient functions) and data definitions (traces of weak solutions) so that optimization formulations of inverse wave problems satisfy some of the prerequisites for application of Newton's method and its relatives. These results follow from the properties of a class of abstract first-order evolution systems, of which various physical wave systems appear as concrete instances. Finite speed of propagation for linear waves with bounded, measurable mechanical parameter fields is one of the by-products of this theory.

A new domain decomposition method is introduced for the heterogeneous 2-D and 3-D Helmholtz equations. Transmission conditions based on the perfectly matched layer (PML) are derived that avoid artificial reflections and match incoming and outgoing waves at the subdomain interfaces. We focus on a subdivision of the rectangular domain into many thin subdomains along one of the axes, in combination with a certain ordering for solving the subdomain problems and a GMRES outer iteration. When combined with multifrontal methods, the solver has near-linear cost in examples, due to very small iteration numbers that are essentially independent of problem size and number of subdomains. In this paper we study the linearized inverse problem associated with imaging of reflection seismic data. We introduce an inverse scattering transform derived from reverse-time migration (RTM). In the process, the explicit evaluation of the so-called normal operator is avoided, while other differential and pseudodifferential operator factors are introduced. We prove that, under certain conditions, the transform yields a partial inverse, and support this with numerical simulations. In addition, we explain the recently discussed 'low-frequency artifacts' in RTM, which are naturally removed by the new method.

We present a preconditioning method for the multi-dimensional Helmholtz equation with smoothly varying coefficient. The method is based on a frame of functions, that approximately separates components associated with different singular values of the operator. For the small singular values, corresponding to propagating waves, the frame functions are constructed using ray theory. A series of 2-D numerical experiments demonstrates that the number of iterations required for convergence is small and independent of the frequency. In this sense the method is optimal.

We investigate the application of windowed Fourier frames (WFFs) to the numerical solution of partial differential equations, focussing on elliptic equations. The action of a partial differential operator (PDO) on a windowed plane wave is close to a multiplication, where the multiplication factor is given by the symbol of the PDO evaluated at the wave number and central position of the windowed plane wave. This can be exploited in a preconditioning method for use in iterative inversion. For domains with periodic boundary conditions we find that the condition number with the preconditioning becomes bounded and the iteration converges well. For problems with a Dirichlet boundary condition, some large and small singular values remain. However the iterative inversion still appears to converge well., Comment: 23 pages

Discrete tomography is concerned with the reconstruction of images that are defined on a discrete set of lattice points from their projections in several directions. The range of values that can be assigned to each lattice point is typically a small discrete set. In this paper we present a framework for studying these problems from an algebraic perspective, based on Ring Theory and Commutative Algebra. A principal advantage of this abstract setting is that a vast body of existing theory becomes accessible for solving Discrete Tomography problems. We study some accurate semiclassical resolvent estimates for operators that are neither selfadjoint nor elliptic, and applications to the Cauchy problem. In particular we get a precise description of the spectrum near the imaginary axis and precise resolvent estimates inside the pseudo-spectrum. We apply our results to the Kramers-Fokker-Planck operator.

A one-way wave equation is an evolution equation in one of the space directions that describes (approximately) a wave field. The exact wave field is approximated in a high frequency, microlocal sense. Here we derive the pseudodifferential one-way wave equation for an inhomogeneous acoustic medium using a known factorization argument. We give explicitly the two highest order terms, that are necessary for approximating the solution. A wave front (singularity) whose propagation velocity has non-zero component in the special direction is correctly described. The equation can't describe singularities propagating along turning rays, i.e. rays along which the velocity component in the special direction changes sign. We show that incorrectly propagated singularities are suppressed if a suitable dissipative term is added to the equation., Comment: 15 pages

Seismic data are commonly modeled by a high-frequency single scattering approximation. This amounts to a linearization in the medium coefficient about a smooth background. The discontinuities are contained in the medium perturbation. The wave solutions in the background medium admit a geometrical optics representation. Here we describe the wave propagation in the background medium by a one-way wave equation. Based on this we derive the double-square-root equation, which is a first order pseudodifferential equation, that describes the continuation of seismic data in depth. We consider the modeling operator, its adjoint and reconstruction based on this equation. If the rays in the background that are associated with the reflections due to the perturbation are nowhere horizontal, the singular part of the data is described by the solution to an inhomogeneous double-square-root equation. We derive a microlocal reconstruction equation. The main result is a characterization of the angle transform that generates the common image point gathers, and a proof that this transform contains no artifacts. Finally, pseudodifferential annihilators based on the double-square-root equation are constructed. The double-square-root equation approach is used in seismic data processing.

This briefing paper captures the key findings and recommendations of a study commissioned by the Joint Information Systems Committee on aspects of the strategic commitment of institutions to repository sustainability. This project, labelled EMBRACE (EMBedding Repositories And Consortial Enhancement), is aimed at enhancing the functionality, interoperability and extensibility of the SHERPA-LEAP repository service, which currently supports the repositories of thirteen University of London institutions. This research brief aims to clarify the different motivations for using and investing in digital repositories, and to highlight potential ways of addressing the challenges of embedding these repositories in institutional strategy and daily operation. It is designed for use by higher education institutions, which are encouraged to adapt the recommendations to their specific context. A list of related readings is included. (Contains 1 footnote.)

Digital repositories can help Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to develop coherent and coordinated approaches to capture, identify, store and retrieve intellectual assets such as datasets, course material and research papers. With the advances of technology, an increasing number of Higher Education Institutions are implementing digital repositories. The leadership of these institutions, however, has been concerned about the awareness of and commitment to repositories, and their sustainability in the future. This study informs a consortium of thirteen London institutions with an assessment of current awareness and attitudes of stakeholders regarding digital repositories in three case study institutions. The report identifies drivers for, and barriers to, the embedding of digital repositories in institutional strategy. The findings therefore should be of use to decision-makers involved in the development of digital repositories. Our approach was entirely based on consultations with specific groups of stakeholders in three institutions through interviews with specific individuals. (List of interviewees is appended. The UK National Audit Office (NAO) commissioned RAND Europe to look at the evidence showing the effectiveness of reform of mathematics teaching in primary schools in England. This study looked at government-sponsored evaluations of mathematics reform in England, independent evaluations of the educational outcomes of mathematics reforms in England, and the international evidence regarding some of the main components of government policy aimed at improving educational outcomes. The study presents the results of the evaluations and the international literature and discusses the robustness of their findings. Methodology is appended. The author cites empirical evidence and studies to support the thesis that television violence is not valuable as a sublimation for violence. Maintaining that television propaganda consists primarily of violence and mis-information about human behavior, and that children copy what they see, she concludes that television has taught people how to be violent and how to react to violence. She advocates swift measures to avert repercussions of exposure to this kind of propaganda, and the use of the medium to show people how to raise children and how to live with each other. (BBM)
