1. Cognitive Styles in Law Schools.

Abstract

Differences in cognitive styles were studied in a selected group of over 800 students at 20 law schools throughout the U.S. Two major styles are identified in this book: that of the monopath, who follows a single route of established principles and procedures, and that of the polypath, who takes many routes, as circumstances suggest. A battery of both new and standard tests was administered to both law students and their professors to investigate differences in cognitive style and their relationships to self-image, anxiety, and academic achievement. This also revealed differences in prevailing styles at different law schools. The research format developed in this study is applicable to the professions of medicine, education, social work, and others in which cognitive and communication styles play a central role in determining outcomes. Appended to the book are: the research questionnaire; a test called "Oral Solution of Verbal Problems;" and Authorization Statements A and B, for student permission of administrative release of final course grades. A bibliography with nearly 100 entries is also included. (LBH)

2. Volunteer Ascertainment Panels.

Abstract

A pilot study was conducted of a model needs assessment procedure developed in response to new FCC regulations requiring noncommercial broadcasters to ascertain the needs, problems, and interests of their communities. The needs assessment procedure, conducted largely by volunteers, was implemented in three stages: (1) a telephone survey of the Austin and San Antonio, Texas communities, (2) a smaller telephone survey of 30 community leaders in each city, and (3) a personal meeting between station managers and community leaders who represented volunteer ascertainment panels. The surveys produced information concerning the diversity of perceptions of community needs and the relation of television to the needs. Characteristics of poll respondents were compared with census data to check validity. Generally, the panelists supported the findings of the survey. Better economic conditions, planning for growth, and better relations between the races were the three areas for improvement cited most in the surveys and panel discussions. The report discussed several possible problems that could stem from ascertainment requirements for noncommercial broadcasters. Appendices include the assessment procedure questionnaires in English and Spanish, and summarize the community survey results. (CMV)

3. Research and Theory in Intercultural Communication.

Abstract

This survey of the state-of-the-art of research and theory in the study of intercultural communication considers the following areas: history of the field, clients, basic assumptions, derivations of the ideas in the field, research methodology, available resources, and predictions for the future. The paper notes that the field of intercultural communication places the highest priority on immediate practicality and intervention; therefore, research and theory are underdeveloped. Such research and theory generally must begin with a recognition on the part of the researchers that understanding the processes of intercultural communication may call for skepticism about what is believed about communication in general. The complexity of any one intercultural communication and the diversity of the intercultural communications of all the subcultures of the world present a great challenge for study. The paper includes a selected bibliography of publications on intercultural communication. (GW)

4. COMMUNICATION AND STATUS--THE DYNAMICS OF A RESEARCH CENTER.

Abstract

THIS STUDY OBSERVED AND ANALYZED THE INTERNAL COMMUNICATIONS OF A RESEARCH CENTER. THE GOAL WAS TO DETERMINE WHO SENDS WHAT MESSAGES, TO WHOM, OVER WHICH CHANNELS. FROM THE DATA THAT WAS GATHERED THROUGH INTERVIEWS THAT AVERAGED 3 HOURS EACH, IT WAS FOUND THAT THE MEMBERS OF THE GROUP GENERALLY PERCEIVED DISCRETE STATUSES RATHER THAN STATUS-SETS. THE STUDY THEN GROUPED THE INDIVIDUAL MEMBERS OF THE CENTER IN TERMS OF THEIR SHARED STATUSES. MOST COMMUNICATION TAKES PLACE WITHIN THESE GROUPS, AND LITTLE TAKES PLACE ACROSS GROUP BOUNDARIES. THESE DIVISIONS AND GROUPINGS REGULATE COMMUNICATION WITHIN THE CENTER. AS THE CENTER HAS GROWN AND BECOME BUREAUCRATIZED, IT HAS DEVELOPED MORE AND MORE DISTINCTIONS OF RANK AND DIVISIONS OF LABOR. THESE HIERARCHIES AND SPECIALTIES ERECT SOME BARRIERS TO THE FREE FLOW OF INFORMATION, BUT THEY ALSO PROVIDE SHIELDING AND PREVENT JAMMING IN THE COMMUNICATION NETWORK. THE STUDY ALSO FOUND THAT MANY OF THE COMMUNICATION PRACTICES OF THE CENTER CAN BE ANALYZED IN TERMS OF TWO OVERALL STATUS CATEGORIES--THE ORGANIZATION MAN AND THE RESEARCH MAN. THESE STATUS-SETS CUT ACROSS THE OFFICIALLY ESTABLISHED RANKS AND FUNCTIONAL DIVISIONS OF THE CENTER. AN EMPHASIS ON THE ORGANIZATION AND AN EMPHASIS ON RESEARCH REFLECTS A BASIC DIVISION WITHIN THE CENTER.
