Flux-averaged cross sections for cosmogenic-neutron activation of natural tellurium were measured using a neutron beam containing neutrons of kinetic energies up to $\sim$800 MeV, and having an energy spectrum similar to that of cosmic-ray neutrons at sea-level. Analysis of the radioisotopes produced reveals that 110mAg will be a dominant contributor to the cosmogenic-activation background in experiments searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay of 130Te, such as CUORE and SNO+. An estimate of the cosmogenic-activation background in the CUORE experiment has been obtained using the results of this measurement and cross-section measurements of proton activation of tellurium. Five seaweed samples from Naturespirit Herbs LLC were counted using low-background high-resolution gamma-ray detectors to search for evidence of contamination from the Fukushima reactor accident. No evidence of Cs-134 was observed in any of the samples. Very low levels of Cs-137 were observed and are attributed to fallout from atmospheric nuclear weapons testing. However, these levels of Cs-137 are small compared to the levels of the naturally occurring K-40 observed from these seaweed samples.

High purity TeO2 crystals are produced to be used for the search for the neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te. Dedicated production lines for raw material synthesis, crystal growth and surface processing were built compliant with radio-purity constraints specific to rare event physics experiments. High sensitivity measurements of radio-isotope concentrations in raw materials, reactants, consumables, ancillaries and intermediary products used for TeO2 crystals production are reported. A very large n-type high-purity Ge-semiconductor detector has recently been installed in the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory's underground low-background facility at Oroville. The detector (named MERLIN II) is mounted in a low-activity cryostat and has a rated 'efficiency' of about 115 percent -- nearly 4 times higher than our original MERLIN detector, which was used extensively to measure the minute amounts of radioactivity in samples from the LDEF satellite. We discuss gamma-spectrometric analyses with MERLIN II on some of the same LDEF samples, providing direct evidence for improvement in performance achieved with the larger detector.

A year ago at the First Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) Post-Retrieval Symposium, detailed measurements on trunnion sections, as well as results from 'intentional' samples (Co, Ni, In, Ta, and V) and spacecraft parts were reported. For this year's Symposium, some of these findings are re-evaluated in combination with more recent results, to cast a longer perspective on the LDEF experience, and to sketch some promising avenues toward more effective participation in future missions. The LDEF analysis effort has been a superb training exercise, from which lessons learned need to be applied to future missions - right back to the early phases of mission planning.

Radioactivities of the LDEF onboard experiments induced by gamma emitting rays in both intentional samples and spacecraft parts were examined. The long time greatly enhanced the ability to detect some of the longer lived nuclides, including: 2.6 yr Na-22 in Al and Fe; 5.3 yr Co-60 in Co, Ni, and In; 2.9 yr Rh-102 in In; and 38 yr Bi-207 in Pb. These radionuclides, along with such other as 33 yr Ar-42 in Ti, Fe, or Ni and 47 yr Ti-44 in the same elements, would be appropriate monitors of the high energy space radiation field on long round-trip voyages in the solar system. Additional candidate radionuclides are also discussed. Radiometric analysis of the LDEF samples was a substantial effort among a dedicated group of experts in low level counting, and highlights several important aspects of the procedures needed to achieve success in this kind of endeavor. Target elements should be chosen to differentiate between neutron and proton induced reactions, whenever this is feasible. Reactions should be chosen with a wide range of energy thresholds, to enable calculation of both intensity and energy spectra of the particle fluxes.

Radioactivities in materials onboard the returned Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) satellite were studied by a variety of techniques. Among the most powerful is low-background Ge-semiconductor detector gamma-ray spectrometry, illustrated here by results obtained at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory's (LBL) Low Background Facilities. The observed radioactivities are of two origins: those radionuclides produced by nuclear reactions with the radiation field in orbit, and radionuclides present initially as 'contaminants' in materials used for construction of the spacecraft and experimental assemblies. In the first category are experiment-related monitor foils and tomato seeds, and such spacecraft materials as aluminum, stainless steel, and titanium. In the second category are aluminum, beryllium, titanium, vanadium, and some special glasses.

The observed radioactivities are of two origins: those radionuclides produced by nuclear reactions with the radiation field in orbit and radionuclides present initially as contaminants in materials used for construction of the spacecraft and experimental assemblies. In the first category are experiment related monitor foils and tomato seeds, and such spacecraft materials as Al, stainless steel, and Ti. In the second category are Al, Be, Ti, Va, and some special glasses. Consider that measured peak-area count rates from both categories range from a high value of about 1 count per minute down to less than 0.001 count per minute. Successful measurement of count rates toward the low end of this range can be achieved only through low background techniques, such as used to obtain the results presented here.
