We report on the properties of central engines in the $\gamma$-ray blazars located at high redshifts beyond z~>~0.4, where the extra-galactic background light (EBL) starts affecting their $\gamma$-ray spectra. The physical engine that provides power to the blazars of very high bolometric luminosity is assumed to be a highly collimated jet of matter moving relativistically away from the supermassive black hole (SMBH), located in the central region of the host galaxy, in a direction aligned toward the Earth. Due to their peculiar geometry and special physical conditions, blazars at redshifts beyond z~>~0.4 are bright enough to be detected in the $\gamma$-ray energy band. The MACE (Major Atmospheric Cherenkov Experiment) telescope has started its regular gamma-ray observations at Hanle in India. Located at an altitude of $\sim$ 4.3 km above sea level and equipped with a 21 m diameter large quasi-parabolic reflector, it has the capability to explore the gamma-ray sky in the energy range above 20 GeV with very high sensitivity. In this work, we present the results from the feasibility studies for searching high-energy gamma-ray signals from dark matter interaction in potential astrophysical environments. We study the impact of MACE response function and other instrumental characteristics to probe the velocity average interaction cross-section ($<\sigma v>$) of the weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), expected from the thermal dark matter freeze-out during the decoupling era. We consider the presence of dark matter in the form of pure WIMPs in the mass range 200 GeV - 10 TeV to produce distinctive gamma-ray spectra through its self-annihilation into standard model particles using the Pythia simulation package. The convolution of gamma-ray spectra corresponding to different standard model channels with the MACE response function is used to estimate the upper limit on $<\sigma v>$ for 100 hours of expected MACE observation of Segue1 (a dwarf spheroidal galaxy) which is a potential site of dark matter., Comment: 8 Pages, 4 Figures, To appear in Proceedings of Science (ICRC 2023)

Machine learning based approaches are emerging as very powerful tools for many applications including source classification in astrophysics research due to the availability of huge high quality data from different surveys in observational astronomy. The Large Area Telescope on board \emph{Fermi} satellite (\emph{Fermi}-LAT) has discovered more than 6500 high energy gamma-ray sources in the sky from its survey over a decade. A significant fraction of sources observed by the \emph{Fermi}-LAT either remains unassociated or has been identified as \emph{Blazar Candidates of Uncertain type} (BCUs). We explore the potential of eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost)- a supervised machine learning algorithm to identify the blazar subclasses among a sample of 112 BCUs of the 4FGL catalog whose X-ray counterparts are available within 95$\%$ uncertainty regions of the \emph{Fermi}-LAT observations. We have used information from the multi-wavelength observations in IR, optical, UV, X-ray and $\gamma$-ray wavebands along with the redshift measurements reported in the literature for classification. Among the 112 uncertain type blazars, 62 are classified as BL Lacertae objects (BL Lacs) and 6 have been classified as Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars (FSRQs). This indicates a significant improvement with respect to the multi-perceptron neural network based classification reported in the literature. Our study suggests that the gamma-ray spectral index, and IR color indices are the most important features for identifying the blazar subclasses using the \emph{XGBoost} classifier. We explore the potential of an artificial neural network (ANN) based method intelligence to probe the propagation of cosmic $\gamma$-ray photons in the extragalactic Universe. The journey of $\gamma$-rays emitted from a distant source like blazar to the observer at the Earth is impeded by the absorption through the interaction with the extragalactic background light (EBL), leading to an electron-positron pair production. This process dominates for gamma ray photons with energy above 10 GeV propagating over the cosmological distances. The effect of $\gamma$-ray attenuation is characterized by a physical quantity called \emph{optical depth}, which strongly depends on the $\gamma$-ray photon energy, redshift of the source, and density of the EBL photons. We estimate the optical depth values for $\gamma$-ray energies above 10 GeV emitted from the sources at redshifts in the range 0.01 to 1 using three different and most promising EBL models. These optical depth estimates are randomly divided into two data sets for training and testing of the ANN using energy, redshift as inputs and optical depth as output. The optimization of ANN-performance for each EBL model employs standard back-propagation (BP) and radial-basis function (RBF) algorithms. The performance of the ANN model using the RBF is found to be superior to the BP method. In particular, the RBF-ANN with 40 neurons in the hidden layer corresponding to the EBL model proposed by Finke et al. MACE (Major Atmospheric Cherenkov Experiment), an imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope, has recently been installed by the HiGRO (Himalayan Gamma-Ray Observatory) collaboration at Hanle (32.8$^\circ$N, 78.9$^\circ$E, 4270m asl) in Ladakh region of North India. The telescope has a 21m diameter large light collector consisting of indigenously developed 1424 square-shaped diamond turned spherical aluminum mirror facets of size $\sim$ 0.5m$\times$0.5m. MACE is the second largest Cherenkov telescope at the highest altitude in the northern hemisphere. The imaging camera of the telescope consists of 1088 photo-multiplier tubes with a uniform pixel resolution of $\sim 0.125^\circ$ covering a field of view of $\sim$ 4.0$^\circ$ $\times$ 4.0$^\circ$. The main objective of the MACE telescope is to study gamma-ray sources mainly in the unexplored energy region 20 -100 GeV and beyond with high sensitivity. The redshift ($z$) evolution of the Extragalactic Background Light (EBL) photon density is very important to understand the history of cosmological structure formation of galaxies and stars since the epoch of recombination. The EBL photons with the characteristic spectral energy distribution ranging from ultraviolet/optical to far-infrared provide a major source of opacity of the Universe to the GeV-TeV $\gamma$-rays travelling over cosmological distances. The effect of the EBL is very significant through $\gamma \gamma \rightarrow e^- e^+$ absorption process on the propagation of the $\gamma$-ray photons with energy $E >$ 50 GeV emitted from the sources at $z \sim 1$. This effect is characterized by the optical depth ($\tau$) which strongly depends on $E$, $z$ and density of the EBL photons. The proper density of the EBL photons increases with $z$ due to expansion of the Universe whereas evolution of radiation sources contributing to the EBL leads to a decrease in the density with increasing $z$. Therefore, the resultant volumetric evolution of the EBL photon density is approximated by a modified redshift dependence. In this work, we probe evolution of the EBL photon density predicted by two prominent models using cosmic gamma-ray horizon ($\tau (E,z)=$ 1) determined by the measurements from the \emph{Fermi}-Large Area Telescope (LAT) observations. The modified redshift dependence of the EBL photon density is optimized for a given EBL model by estimating the same gamma-ray horizon as predicted by the \emph{Fermi}-LAT observations. We further compare the optical depth estimates in the energy range $E =$ 4 GeV-1 TeV and redshift range $z =0.01-1$ from the \emph{Fermi}-LAT observations with the values derived from the two EBL models to further constrain the evolution of the EBL photon density in the $z~\sim 1$ Universe., Comment: 9 Pages, 6 Figures: Accepted for Publication in Astrophysics and Space Science

The binary system AR Scorpii hosts an M-type main sequence cool star orbiting around a magnetic white dwarf in the Milky Way Galaxy. The broadband non-thermal emission over radio, optical and X-ray wavebands observed from AR Scorpii indicates strong modulations on the spin frequency of the white dwarf as well as the spin-orbit beat frequency of the system. Therefore, AR Scorpii is also referred to as a white dwarf pulsar wherein a fast spinning white dwarf star plays very crucial role in the broadband non-thermal emission. Several interpretations for the observed features of AR Scorpii appear in the literature without firm conclusions. In this work, we investigate connection between some of the important physical properties like spin-down power, surface magnetic field, equation of state, temperature and gravity associated with the white dwarf in the binary system AR Scorpii and its observational characteristics. In this work, we have analyzed the $\gamma$-ray data in the energy range 100 MeV to 500 GeV from the \emph{Fermi}-Large Area Telescope (LAT) observations for the period August 4, 2008 to March 31, 2019. The $\gamma$-ray emission from AR Scorpii over the last decade is not statistically significant and therefore 2$\sigma$ upper limit on the integral flux above 100 MeV has been estimated. We reproduce the non-thermal broadband spectral energy distribution of AR Scorpii using an emission model having two synchrotron components due to the relativistic electrons in very high magnetic fields. The first component (Synchrotron-1) broadly describes the emissions at radio to high energy X-rays through the synchrotron radiation originating from a spherical region of radius $\sim$ 1.8$\times$10$^{10}$ cm and a magnetic field strength of $\sim$ 10$^3$ Gauss. The second component (Synchrotron-2) which reproduces the X-ray emission at lower energies and predicts the $\gamma$-ray emission, originates from another spherical region with radius $\sim$ 1.4$\times$10$^{10}$ cm and a magnetic field strength of $\sim$ 10$^6$ Gauss. The relativistic electron populations in both the emission regions are described by a smooth broken power law energy distribution. The $\gamma$-ray emission predicted by the Synchrotron-2 model is below the broadband sensitivity of the \emph{Fermi}-LAT and is also consistent with the 95$\%$ confidence level upper limit on the integral flux above 100 MeV derived from more than 10 years of observations. Blazars represent dominant population of the extragalactic $\gamma$-ray sources in the Universe. These sources exhibit some characteristic properties like strong and non-thermal continuum emission over the entire electromagnetic spectrum from radio to TeV $\gamma$-rays with rapid variability on all timescales. The emission at radio and optical wavelengths is highly polarized with significant variation. The fastest variability in the blazar emission is observed during the flaring activity which is an important observational property of blazars. In this paper, we describe various methods to characterize the temporal variability in the multi-wavelength light curves of blazars. We also provide a detailed description of the set of statistical parameters which are used to quantify the level of variability present in the time-series. In this work, we use two different methods to determine the opacity of the TeV gamma-rays caused by the extragalactic background light (EBL) via e-e+ production due to photon-photon interaction. The first method, Model-Dependent Approach, uses various EBL models for estimating the opacity as a function of the redshift and energy of the TeV photons. The second method, Model-Independent Approach, relies on using the simultaneous observations of blazars in the MeV-GeV energy range from the Fermi-LAT and in the TeV band from the ground-based gamma-ray telescopes. We make the underline assumption that the extrapolation of the LAT spectrum of blazars to TeV energies is either a good estimate or an upper limit for the intrinsic TeV spectrum of a source. We apply this method on the simultaneous observations of a few blazars at different redshifts to demonstrate a comparative study of six prominent EBL models. Opacities of the TeV photons predicted by the model-independent approach are systematically larger than the ones estimated from the model-dependent method. The flat spectrum radio quasar 3C 279 was observed in an extremely high activity state on June 16, 2015 (MJD 57189). In this paper, we investigate the properties of this flaring episode in the high energy $\gamma$-ray and optical bands using data from the \emph{Fermi}-LAT, SMARTS, and SPOL observations during the period June 1-30, 2015 (MJD 57174-57203). The highest emission state in the $\gamma$-ray band detected by the \emph{Fermi}-LAT exhibits a peak flux of $\sim$ 2$\times$10$^{-7}$ erg~cm$^{-2}$~s$^{-1}$ which is more than 25 times the flux level measured in the low activity state of the source. The temporal analysis of the daily \emph{Fermi}-LAT light curve suggests that the giant flaring episode has characteristic rise and decay times less than one day. The optical daily light curves in B, V, R, and J bands also indicate the flaring activity from 3C 279 with flux levels peaking for two days on June 16-17, 2015 (MJD 57189-57190). The discrete correlation function analysis indicates a time lag of 1 day or longer between the $\gamma$-ray and optical peaks during the flaring episode. The $\gamma$-ray emission is also observed to show a harder-when-brighter behaviour whereas optical emission exhibits an opposite behaviour. The $\gamma$-ray emission region during the flare is observed to be very compact and is located close to the base of the jet. The degree of linear polarization in the wavelength range 500-700 nm measured using SPOL during this period is also highly variable with a peak of $\sim$ 30$\%$ one day after the $\gamma$-ray flare. Near simultaneous $\gamma$-ray flux points show a linear anti-correlation with the degree of polarization during the period of $\gamma$-ray flare. A very bright and fast varying gamma-ray flare has been detected from the blazar 3C 279 on June 16, 2015. We have studied the broadband spectral energy distribution of the source during the flaring episode and in the low activity state using a simple one zone leptonic model. We find that an electron energy distribution described by a broken power law can be used to reproduce the broadband emissions during the high and low activity states. The flux measurements at radio, infrared and optical frequencies are reproduced by the synchrotron emission resulting from the relativistic electrons in a jet magnetic field strength of 0.37 G. The gamma-ray emission from the blazar 3C 279 is attributed to the Comptonization of the IR seed photons from the dusty torus with a temperature of 870 K. The outburst from the source observed on June 16, 2015 can be ascribed to an efficient acceleration process associated with a sudden enhancement in the electron energy density in the emitting region with respect to the low activity state. The fast gamma-ray variability at a minute timescale implies that the emission during the flare originates from a more compact region and the size of the emission zone in the low activity state is found to be four times larger than that during the flare. In this paper, we discuss an artificial intelligence based approach to constrain the redshift of blazars using combined $\gamma$--ray observations from the \emph{Fermi} Large Area Telescope (LAT) and ground based atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (ACTs) in GeV and \emph{sub} TeV energy regimes respectively. The spectral measurements in GeV and TeV energy bands show a redshift dependent spectral break in the $\gamma$--ray spectra of blazars. We use this observational feature of blazars to constrain their redshift. The observed spectral information of blazars with known redshifts reported in the \emph{Fermi} catalogs (3FGL and 1FHL) and TeV catalog are used to train an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) based algorithm. The training of the ANN methodology is optimized using \emph{Levenberg - Marquardt} algorithm with $\gamma$--ray spectral indices and redshifts of 35 well observed blazars as input and output parameters respectively. After training, we use only observed spectral indices in GeV and sub TeV regimes for 10 blazars as inputs to predict their redshifts. The comparison of predicted redshifts by the ANN with the known redshift suggests that both the values are consistent within $\sim$ 18$\%$ uncertainty. The method proposed in the present work would be helpful in future for constraining or predicting the redshifts of the blazars using only observational $\gamma$--ray spectral informations obtained from the \emph{Fermi}-LAT and current generation IACTs as well as from the next generation Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) with improved source statistics., Comment: 3 Figures, 3 Tables, Accepted for Publication in Experimental Astronomy

In this work, we present a multi-wavelength study of the blazar 1ES 1218+304 using near simultaneous observations over 10 years during the period September 1, 2008 to August 31, 2018 (MJD 54710-58361). We have analyzed data from \emph{Swift}-UVOT, \emph{Swift}-XRT and \emph{Fermi}-LAT to study the long term behaviour of 1ES 1218+304 in different energy bands over the last decade. We have also used the archival data from OVRO, MAXI and \emph{Swift}-BAT available during the above period. The near simultaneous data on 1ES 1218+304 suggest that the long term multi-wavelength emission from the source is steady and does not show any significant change in the source activity. The optical/UV fluxes are found to be dominated by the host galaxy emission and can be modelled using the $PEGASE$ code. However, the time averaged X-ray and $\gamma$-ray emisions from the source are reproduced using a single zone leptonic model with log-parabolic distribution for the radiating particles. The intrinsic very high energy $\gamma$-ray emission during a low activity state of the source is broadly consistent with the predictions of the leptonic model for blazars. We have investigated the physical properties of the jet and the mass of the super massive black hole at the center of the host galaxy using long term X-ray observations from the \emph{Swift}-XRT which is in agreement with the value derived using blackbody approximation of the host galaxy. The discovery of the white dwarf binary system AR Scorpii (AR Sco) with its fascinating non-thermal dominated multi-frequency emission has sparked renewed interest in potential high energy gamma-ray emission from white dwarf pulsars. The Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) below and above optical shows evidence of non-thermal synchrotron emission, with pulsed emission in optical and X-ray bands at the white dwarf spin period ($P_{*} = 117 \, \mbox{s}$) as well as a beat period ($P_{\rm b} = 118.1 \, \mbox{s}$) with the binary period. From an energy perspective, the highly magnetic rotating white dwarf can accelerate particles to TeV energies. In this study, a search for high energy gamma-ray emission was conducted between 100 MeV - 500 GeV by analysing the newly available Fermi-LAT Pass 8 data with the new Fermi 1.0.1 Science Tools. Binned likelihood analysis was done using power law, broken power law and log parabola models. From the selected Region of Interest (ROI) centred on AR Sco's position, we calculated a significance of $\sqrt{TS}\leq$ 3.87$\sigma$ for the integrated gamma-ray activity between 100 MeV - 500 GeV at a photon flux level of 0.486 $\pm$ 0.261 x 10$^{-8}$ photons cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ using the broken power law model. This resulted in a 3$\sigma$ upper-limit detection from the position of AR Sco. Extremely High Synchrotron Peak (EHSP) blazars are observed to form a small population of sources with high energy hump peaking at TeV energies in their broad-band spectral energy distributions. The observed gamma-ray emission from these sources at GeV-TeV energies is described by unusual hard spectral indices. The observed spectral and temporal characteristics of these sources challenge the standard leptonic models for the broad-band emissions from blazars. Therefore, such sources provide astrophysical sites to investigate directly the particle acceleration, cooling of relativistic particles and indirectly probe the cosmological quantities like extragalactic background light (EBL) and intergalactic magnetic field (IMF) in the Universe. In this study, we investigate the spectral properties of the gamma-ray emission from EHSP blazars using observations from the Fermi-LAT catalogues (3FGL and 3FHL) along with the TeV observations using ground based telescopes. The observed TeV gamma-ray spectra are corrected for the EBL absorption using the most recent and updated EBL models to determine the intrinsic spectrum at the source. The intrinsic TeV spectra are combined with the MeV-GeV observations from the Fermi-LAT to study the gamma-ray emission from EHSP blazars in the broad energy band. The intrinsic gamma-ray spectra are then used to estimate the position of high energy peak in the spectral energy distribution. Extremely High energy peaked BL Lac (EHBL) objects are a special class of blazars with peculiar observational properties at X-ray and $\gamma$--ray energies. The observations of these sources indicate hard X-ray and $\gamma$--ray spectra and absence of rapid flux variations in the multi-wavelength light curves. These observational features challenge the leptonic models for blazars due to unusually hard particle spectrum in the emission region of the blazar jet and provide a strong motivation for exploring alternative scenarios to interpret the broad-band emission from blazars. At present, only few TeV blazars have been observed as EHBL objects in the extragalactic Universe. Due to their hard $\gamma$--ray spectra and long term variability, the observations of EHBL type of blazars at different redshifts help in probing the cosmic magnetic field and extragalactic background light in the Universe. Such objects also provide astrophysical sites to explore the particle acceleration mechanisms like magnetic reconnection and second order Fermi acceleration. Therefore, it has become important to identify more objects as EHBL using the observations available in the literature. Recent studies on the blazar Mrk 501 indicate that this source may exhibit an EHBL behaviour. In this paper, we use long term observations of Mrk 501 to explore its nature. Axions and axion like particles in general are consequences of the extensions of the standard model in particle physics. Axions have been proposed as hypothetical pseudo-scalar particles in particle physics to solve the strong Charge-Parity problem using quantum chromodynamics. These particles are also proposed to be an attractive candidate for cold dark matter in the Universe. The current understanding of the existence and properties of the axions is not very clear and these hypothetical particles remain elusive. However many theoretical and experimental searches are being made for understanding and constraining the properties of axions via detection of axion like particles. The term axion like particles is used to include different types of axions going beyond the standard model. In this paper, we review the different physical properties of axions and axion like particles and their possible sources in the laboratory and Universe. We discuss different experimental set ups for detection of axion like particles proposed in the literature. In this paper, we explore the behavior of optical polarization during the multi-wavelength outburst of the blazar Mrk 421 detected in February 2010. We use optical polarization measurements in the wavelength range 500-700 nm from SPOL observations available between January 1, 2010 and March 31, 2010 (MJD 55197-55286) including the period of multi-wavelength flaring activity detected from the source around February 16-17, 2010 (MJD 55243-55244). We also use near simultaneous optical and radio flux measurements from SPOL in V and R bands and OVRO at 15 GHz respectively. We find that the emissions in the optical and radio bands do not show any significant change in the source activity unlike at X-ray and $\gamma$--ray energies during the outburst. The optical and radio flux measurements are found to be consistent with the long term quiescent state emission of the source. Moreover, the linear polarization in the wavelength range 500-700 nm decreases to a minimum value of 1.6$\%$ during the X-ray and $\gamma$--ray outburst which is significantly lower than the long term average value of $\sim$ 4.2$\%$. The angle of polarization varies between 114$^\circ$-163$^\circ$ with a preferred average value of $\sim$ 137$^\circ$ during this period. We estimate the degree of polarization intrinsic to the jet taking into account the host galaxy contamination in R band and compare this with the theoretical synchrotron polarization estimated for a power law distribution of relativistic electrons gyrating in an emission region filled with ordered and chaotic magnetic fields. In this work, we study the short term flaring activity from the high synchrotron peaked blazar Mrk 501 detected by the FACT and H.E.S.S. telescopes in the energy range 2-20 TeV during June 23-24, 2014 (MJD 56831.86-56831.94). We revisit this major TeV flare of the source in the context of near simultaneous multi-wavelength observations of gamma-rays in MeV-GeV regime with Fermi-LAT, soft X-rays in 0.3-10 keV range with Swift-XRT, hard X-rays in 10-20 keV and 15-50 keV bands with MAXI and Swift-BAT respectively, UV-Optical with Swift-UVOT and 15 GHz radio with OVRO telescope. We have performed a detailed temporal and spectral analysis of the data from Fermi-LAT, Swift-XRT and Swift-UVOT during the period June 15-30, 2014 (MJD 56823-56838). Near simultaneous archival data available from Swift-BAT, MAXI and OVRO telescope along with the V-band optical polarization measurements from SPOL observatory are also used in the study of giant TeV flare of Mrk 501 detected by the FACT and H.E.S.S. telescopes. No significant change in the multi-wavelength emission from radio to high energy gamma-rays during the TeV flaring activity ofMrk 501 is observed except variation in soft X-rays. The varying soft X-ray emission is found to be correlated with the gamma-ray emission at TeV energies during the flaring activity of the source. The soft X-ray photon spectral index is observed to be anti-correlated with the integral flux showing harder-when-brighter behavior. An average value of 4.5% for V-band optical polarization is obtained during the above period whereas the corresponding electric vector position angle changes significantly. We have used the minimum variability timescale from the H.E.S.S. observations to estimate the Doppler factor of the emission region which is found to be consistent with the previous studies of the source., Comment: 28 Pages, 3 Figures, Accepted for Publication in Advances in Space Research

In this work, we report on the detection of enhanced TeV gamma- ray emission from the high synchrotron-peaked blazar Mrk 421 with the TACTIC telescope on the night of December 28, 2014 (MJD 57019). We use data from the TACTIC observations of Mrk 421 for one week during December 25-31, 2014 (MJD 57016-57022) in this study. The TACTIC observation on December 28, 2014 (MJD 57019) alone results in the detection of 86+-17 gamma- ray like events from Mrk 421 with a statistical significance of 5.17sigma in a livetime of ~ 2.2 hours above an energy threshold of 0.85 TeV. The high statistics (higher than three Crab Units) of TeV photons enables us to study the very high energy (VHE) gamma- ray emission from the source at shorter timescales. A minimum variability timescale of ~ 0.72 days is obtained for the TeV gamma- ray emission from Mrk 421 during the above flaring activity of the source. We have also analyzed the contemporaneous data from Fermi-LAT to study the high energy (HE) gamma- ray emission during the high activity state of the source. The HE gamma- ray emission is observed to be increasing after the TeV flaring activity detected with the TACTIC. We also use other near simultaneous archival data available from the Swift-BAT in hard X-rays and from SPOL at Steward Observatory in optical V and R bands to characterize the multi-wavelength emission of Mrk 421 during the high activity state observed at TeV energies. The TeV gamma- ray emission observed on December 28, 2014 (MJD 57019) is found to be more prominant than the emissions in lower energy bands during the same period. The TeV gamma- ray observation of Mrk 421 in high activity state with the TACTIC telescope is also used to understand the physical mechanism for blazar emission under the frame work of the leptonic single zone synchrotron self Compton process., Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures, Accepted for publication in Astroparticle Physics

We have observed Markarian 501 in Very High Energy (VHE) gamma-ray wavelength band for 70.6 hours from 15 April to 30 May, 2012 using TACTIC telescope. Detailed analysis of $\sim$66.3 hours of clean data revealed the presence of a TeV $\gamma$-ray signal (686$\pm$77 $\gamma$-ray events) from the source direction with a statistical significance of 8.89$\sigma$ above 850 GeV. Further, a total of 375 $\pm$ 47 $\gamma$-ray like events were detected in 25.2 hours of observation from 22 - 27 May, 2012 with a statistical significance of 8.05$\sigma$ indicating that the source has possibly switched over to a relatively high gamma-ray emission state. We have derived time-averaged differential energy spectrum of the state in the energy range 850 GeV - 17.24 TeV which fits well with a power law function of the form $dF/dE=f_{0}E^{-\Gamma}$ with $f_{0}= (2.27 \pm 0.38) \times 10 ^{-11} $ photons cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ TeV$^{-1}$ and $\Gamma=2.57 \pm 0.15$. In order to investigate the source state, we have also used almost simultaneous multiwavelength observations viz: high energy data collected by $\it{Fermi}$-LAT, X-ray data collected by $\it{Swift}$-XRT and MAXI, optical and UV data collected by $\it{Swift}$-UVOT, and radio data collected by OVRO, and reconstructed broad-band Spectral Energy Distribution (SED). The obtained SED supports leptonic model (homogeneous single zone) for VHE gamma-ray emission involving synchrotron and synchrotron self Compton (SSC) processes., Comment: 10

Strong X-ray and $\gamma$--ray flares have been detected in February 2010 from the high synchrotron peaked blazar Mrk 421 (z=0.031). With the motivation of understanding the physics involved in this flaring activity, we study the variability of the source in X-ray and $\gamma$--ray energy bands during the period February 10-23, 2010 (MJD 55237-55250). We use near simultaneous X-ray data collected by \emph{MAXI}, \emph{Swift}-XRT and $\gamma$--ray data collected by \emph{Fermi}-LAT and \emph{TACTIC} along with the optical V-band observations by \emph{SPOL} at Steward Observatory. We observe that the variation in the one day averaged flux from the source during the flare is characterized by fast rise and slow decay. Besides, the TeV $\gamma$--ray flux shows a strong correlation with the X-ray flux, suggesting the former to be an outcome of synchrotron self Compton emission process. To model the observed X-ray and $\gamma$--ray light curves, we numerically solve the kinetic equation describing the evolution of particle distribution in the emission region. The injection of particle distribution into the emission region, from the putative acceleration region, is assumed to be a time dependent power law. The synchrotron and synchrotron self Compton emission from the evolving particle distribution in the emission region are used to reproduce the X-ray and $\gamma$--ray flares successfully. Our study suggests that the flaring activity of Mrk 421 can be an outcome of an efficient acceleration process associated with the increase in underlying non-thermal particle distribution., Comment: Accepted for publication in New Astronomy

In this paper, we present results of TeV $\gamma$--ray observations of the high synchrotron peaked BL Lac object 1ES 1218+304 (z=0.182) with the $TACTIC$ (TeV Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope with Imaging Camera). The observations are primarily motivated by the unusually hard GeV-TeV spectrum of the source despite its relatively large redshift. The source is observed in the TeV energy range with the $TACTIC$ from March 1, 2013 to April 15, 2013 (MJD 56352--56397) for a total observation time of 39.62 h and no evidence of TeV $\gamma$--ray activity is found from the source. The corresponding 99$\%$ confidence level upper limit on the integral flux above a threshold energy of 1.1 TeV is estimated to be 3.41 $\times10^{-12}$ photons cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ (i.e $<23\%$ Crab Nebula flux) assuming a power law differential energy spectrum with photon index 3.0, as previously observed by the $MAGIC$ and $VERITAS$ telescopes. For the study of multi-wavelength emission from the source, we use nearly simultaneous optical, UV and and X--ray data collected by the UVOT and XRT instruments on board the \emph{Swift} satellite and high energy $\gamma$--ray data collected by the Large Area Telescope on board the \emph{Fermi} satellite. We also use radio data at 15 GHz from OVRO 40 m telescope in the same period. No significant increase of activity is detected from radio to TeV $\gamma$--rays from 1ES1218+304 during the period from March 1, 2013 to April 15, 2013., Comment: Accepted for Publication in New Astronomy

We present results from multi-wavelength study of intense flaring activity from a high frequency peaked BL Lac object Mrk 421. The source was observed in its flaring state on February 16, 2010 with the $TACTIC$ at energies above 1.5 TeV. Near simultaneous multi-wavelength data were obtained from high energy (MeV-GeV) $\gamma$--ray observations with \emph{Fermi}--LAT, X--ray observations by the \emph{Swift} and \emph{MAXI} satellites, optical V-band observation by SPOL at \emph{Steward Observatory} and radio 15 GHz observation at OVRO 40 meter-telescope. We have performed a detailed spectral and temporal analysis of $TACTIC$, \emph{Fermi}--LAT and \emph{Swift}--XRT observations of Mrk 421 during February 10--23, 2010 (MJD 55237-55250). The flaring activity of the source is studied by investigating the properties of daily light curves from radio to $TeV$ energy range and we present the correlation and variability analysis in each energy band. The $TeV$ flare detected by $TACTIC$ on February 16, 2010 is well correlated with the activity in lower energy bands. The differential energy spectrum of the source, in the energy range 1.5-11 TeV, as measured by $TACTIC$ on this night is described by a power law ($dN/dE \propto E^{-\Gamma}$) with spectral index $\Gamma = 2.6\pm0.3$. After accounting for absorption of $TeV$ photons by low energy extragalactic background light photons via pair production, the intrinsic $TeV$ spectrum reveals a power law index of $2.3\pm0.3$. Finally the broad band spectral energy distribution of the source in flaring state is reproduced using a simple emission model involving synchrotron and synchrotron self Compton processes. Very high energy (VHE) $\gamma$-rays above 10$'$s of GeV energy, emitted from distant blazars, are attenuated by photons from the extragalactic background light (EBL). Unfortunately, neither the EBL nor the intrinsic blazar spectrum is accurately known to derive one quantity from the other. In this work we use a homogeneous one zone model involving synchrotron, synchrotron self Compton (SSC) and external Compton (EC) emission mechanisms to estimate the intrinsic VHE spectra of blazars. The model is applied on three VHE blazars, namely PKS2155-304, RGB J0710+591 and 3C279, for which simultaneous multi-wavelength data are available from various observations. The predicted values of the intrinsic VHE fluxes are then compared with the observations by imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes to determine the optical depth of VHE $\gamma$-rays. On comparing these optical depth values with those predicted by four different EBL models, we observe a somewhat pronounced systematic deviation for PKS2155-304 and 3C279 at higher energies, especially for the EBL model proposed by Finke et al.(2010). We attribute this deviation to be an outcome of either the failure of the extrapolation of blazar SED to VHE energies and/or due to various assumptions buried in the EBL models., Comment: 7 Figures

We have observed the blazar Markarian 421 with the TACTIC $\gamma$-ray telescope at Mt. Abu, India, from 22 November 2009 to 16 May 2010 for 265 hours. Detailed analysis of the data so recorded revealed presence of a TeV $\gamma$-ray signal with a statistical significance of 12.12$\sigma$ at $E_{\gamma}\geq$ 1 TeV. We have estimated the time averaged differential energy spectrum of the source in the energy range 1.0 - 16.44 TeV. The spectrum fits well with the power law function of the form ($dF/dE=f_0 E^{-\Gamma}$) with $f_0=(1.39\pm0.239)\times 10^{-11}cm^{-2}s^{-1}TeV^{-1}$ and $\Gamma=2.31\pm0.14$., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures: Accepted for publication in J. Lattice QCD results reveal that the critical parameters and the order of the quark-hadron phase transition are quite sensitive to the number of dynamical flavours and their masses included in the theory. Motivated by this result we develop a phenomenological equation of state for the quark-gluon plasma consisting of $n_f$ flavours retaining the entropy per baryon ratio continuous across the quark-hadron phase boundary. We thus obtain a generalised expression for the temperature and baryon chemical potential dependent bag constant. The results are shown for the realistic case, i.e., involving u, d and s quarks only. We then obtain a phase boundary for an isentropic quark-hadron phase transition using Gibbs' criteria. Similarly another phase boundary is obtained for the transition to an ideal QGP from the solution of the condition $B(\mu,T)=0$. The variation of critical temperature $T_c$ with the number of flavours included in the theory. Also the variation of ${(\epsilon-4P)}/T^4$ with temperature are studied and compared with lattice results. Finally the strange particle ratios $\frac{\bar{\Lambda}}{\Lambda}$, $\frac{\bar{\Xi}}{\Xi}$ and $\frac{K^+}{K^-}$ are obtained at both phase boundaries. We propose that their variations with the temperature and baryon chemical potential can be used in identifying the quark-gluon plasma in the recent as well as in future heavy-ion experiments., Comment: 16 pages Latex File, 5 figures available on request
