Search

Rydberg atom array has been established as one appealing platform for quantum simulation and quantum computation. Recent experimental development of trapping and controlling two-species atoms using optical tweezer arrays has brought more complex interactions in this game, enabling much versatile novel quantum states and phenomena to emerge and thus leading to a growing need for both theoretical and numerical investigations in this regard. In this paper we systematically calculate the ground state phase diagram of alternating two-species atom array and find some novel quantum states that cannot exist in traditional cold-atom platforms, for instance the period $4$ product state $|1100\rangle^{\otimes m}$, the period $6$ product state $|111000\rangle^{\otimes m}$ and order-disorder separation phase. We also confirm the existence of floating phase, however, in this system it has to be described by two interacting bosonic fields whereas that in the single species Rydberg atom array can be understood as free bosons. More interestingly, in the quench dynamics we discover a type of new quantum many-body scar distinct from that previous found in single species atoms which is explained by low-energy effective theory of the PXP model. Instead, the underlying physics of the newly found quantum many-body scar can be described by a perturbation theory spanning the whole energy spectrum. Detailed analysis on how to experimentally prepare these states and observe the phenomena is provided. Numerical evidence shows that the proposed scheme is robust against typical experimentally relevent imperfections and thus it is implementable. We report on the first measurement of the elemental fragmentation cross sections (EFCSs) of $^{29-33}\mathrm{Si}$ on a carbon target at $\sim$230~MeV/nucleon. The experimental data covering charge changes of $\Delta Z$ = 1-4 are reproduced well by the isospin-dependent quantum molecular dynamics (IQMD) coupled with the evaporation GEMINI (IQMD+GEMINI) model. We further explore the mechanisms underlying the single-proton removal reaction in this model framework. We conclude that the cross sections from direct proton knockout exhibit a overall weak dependence on the mass number of $\mathrm{Si}$ projectiles. The proton evaporation induced after the projectile excitation significantly affects the cross sections for neutron-deficient $\mathrm{Si}$ isotopes, while neutron evaporation plays a crucial role in the reactions of neutron-rich $\mathrm{Si}$ isotopes. We investigate the ground-state properties of the ultracold gases of bosonic microwave-shielded polar molecules. To account for the large shielding core of the inter-molecular potential, we adopt a variational ansatz incorporating the Jastrow correlation factor. We show that the system is always stable and supports a self-bound gas phase and an expanding gas phase. We also calculate the condensate fraction which is significantly reduced when the size of the shielding core of the two-body potential becomes comparable to the inter-molecular distance. Our studies distinguish the molecular condensates from the atomic ones and invalidate the application of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation to the microwave-shielded molecular gases. Our work paves the way for studying the Bose-Einstein condensations of ultracold gases of microwave-shielded polar molecules.

We investigate the ground-state properties of the quasi-one-dimensional dipolar gases using continuous matrix product states techniques. Making use of the first- and second-order correlation functions, we find that the system supports the superfluid, super-Tonks-Girardeau, and quasicrystal phases according to the Luttinger liquid theory. We also map out the phase diagram on the parameter plane consisting the contact and dipolar interaction strengths. Furthermore, we compute the Luttinger parameter, the structure factor, and the momentum distribution of the system. Finally, we show that the predicted dipolar effect can potentially be observed in quasi-one-dimensional gases of polar molecules.

We investigate the static and dynamic properties of tetratomic molecules formed by two microwave-shielded polar molecules across field-linked resonances. In particular, we focus on two-body physics and experimental techniques unexplored in the recent experiment [X.-Y. Chen {\it et al}., Nature {\bf626}, 283 (2024)]. We show that, compared to the lowest tetramer state, higher tetramer states typically have longer lifetimes, which may facilitate a further cooling of tetramer gases towards quantum degeneracy. To detect tetramers, we identify the distinctive time-of-flight images from ramp dissociation, which can be observed by lowering the ramp rate of the microwave. Remarkably, in the modulational dissociation of tetramers, we find that multi-photon processes induce dissociation even below the threshold modulation frequency when the modulation amplitude is sufficiently high. Given the universal form of the inter-molecular potential for microwave-shielded polar molecules, our results also apply to other molecular gases widely explored in recent experiments.

Recently, an anomalous temperature evolution of spin wave excitations has been observed in a van der Waals metallic ferromagnet Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ (FGT) [S. Bao, et al., Phys. Rev. X 12, 011022 (2022)], whose theoretical understanding yet remains elusive. Here we study the spin dynamics of a ferromagnetic Kondo-Heisenberg lattice model at finite temperature, and propose a mechanism of magnon damping that explains the intriguing experimental results. In particular, we find the magnon damping rate $\gamma(T)$ firstly decreases as temperature lowers, due to the reduced magnon-magnon scatterings. It then reaches a minimum at $T_{\rm d}^*$, and rises up again following a logarithmic scaling $\gamma(T) \sim \ln{(T_0/T)}$ (with $T_0$ a constant) for $T < T_{\rm d}^*$, which can be attributed to electron-magnon scatterings of spin-flip type. Moreover, we obtain the phase diagram containing the ferromagnetic and Kondo insulator phases by varying the Kondo coupling, which may be relevant for experiments on pressured FGT. The presence of a magnon damping minimum and logarithmic scaling at low temperature indicates the emergence of the Kondo effect reflected in the collective excitations of local moments in a Kondo lattice system.

Video grounding aims to localize the target moment in an untrimmed video corresponding to a given sentence query. Existing methods typically select the best prediction from a set of predefined proposals or directly regress the target span in a single-shot manner, resulting in the absence of a systematical prediction refinement process. In this paper, we propose DiffusionVG, a novel framework with diffusion models that formulates video grounding as a conditional generation task, where the target span is generated from Gaussian noise inputs and interatively refined in the reverse diffusion process. During training, DiffusionVG progressively adds noise to the target span with a fixed forward diffusion process and learns to recover the target span in the reverse diffusion process. In inference, DiffusionVG can generate the target span from Gaussian noise inputs by the learned reverse diffusion process conditioned on the video-sentence representations. Without bells and whistles, our DiffusionVG demonstrates superior performance compared to existing well-crafted models on mainstream Charades-STA, ActivityNet Captions and TACoS benchmarks.

Emotion recognition in conversations (ERC) is a rapidly evolving task within the natural language processing community, which aims to detect the emotions expressed by speakers during a conversation. Recently, a growing number of ERC methods have focused on leveraging supervised contrastive learning (SCL) to enhance the robustness and generalizability of learned features. However, current SCL-based approaches in ERC are impeded by the constraint of large batch sizes and the lack of compatibility with most existing ERC models. To address these challenges, we propose an efficient and model-agnostic SCL framework named Supervised Sample-Label Contrastive Learning with Soft-HGR Maximal Correlation (SSLCL), which eliminates the need for a large batch size and can be seamlessly integrated with existing ERC models without introducing any model-specific assumptions. Specifically, we introduce a novel perspective on utilizing label representations by projecting discrete labels into dense embeddings through a shallow multilayer perceptron, and formulate the training objective to maximize the similarity between sample features and their corresponding ground-truth label embeddings, while minimizing the similarity between sample features and label embeddings of disparate classes. Moreover, we innovatively adopt the Soft-HGR maximal correlation as a measure of similarity between sample features and label embeddings, leading to significant performance improvements over conventional similarity measures. Additionally, multimodal cues of utterances are effectively leveraged by SSLCL as data augmentations to boost model performances. Extensive experiments on two ERC benchmark datasets, IEMOCAP and MELD, demonstrate the compatibility and superiority of our proposed SSLCL framework compared to existing state-of-the-art SCL methods. The driving style of an Autonomous Vehicle (AV) refers to how it behaves and interacts with other AVs. In a multi-vehicle autonomous driving system, an AV capable of identifying the driving styles of its nearby AVs can reliably evaluate the risk of collisions and make more reasonable driving decisions. However, there has not been a consistent definition of driving styles for an AV in the literature, although it is considered that the driving style is encoded in the AV's trajectories and can be identified using Maximum Entropy Inverse Reinforcement Learning (ME-IRL) methods as a cost function. Nevertheless, an important indicator of the driving style, i.e., how an AV reacts to its nearby AVs, is not fully incorporated in the feature design of previous ME-IRL methods. In this paper, we describe the driving style as a cost function of a series of weighted features. We design additional novel features to capture the AV's reaction-aware characteristics. Then, we identify the driving styles from the demonstration trajectories generated by the Stochastic Model Predictive Control (SMPC) using a modified ME-IRL method with our newly proposed features. The proposed method is validated using MATLAB simulation and an off-the-shelf experiment.

Charge-changing cross section ($\sigma_{\text{cc}}$) measurements via the transmission method have made important progress recently aiming to determine the charge radii of exotic nuclei. In this work, we report a new $\sigma_{\text{cc}}$ measurement of 304(9) MeV/nucleon $^{28}$Si on carbon at the second Radioactive Ion Beam Line in Lanzhou (RIBLL2) and describe the data analysis procedure in detail. This procedure is essential to evaluate the systematic uncertainty in the transmission method. The determined $\sigma_{\mathrm{cc}}$ of 1125(11) mb is found to be consistent with the existing data at similar energies. Ultracold polyatomic molecules offer intriguing new opportunities in cold chemistry, precision measurements, and quantum information processing, thanks to their rich internal structure. However, their increased complexity compared to diatomic molecules presents a formidable challenge to employ conventional cooling techniques. Here, we demonstrate a new approach to create ultracold polyatomic molecules by electroassociation in a degenerate Fermi gas of microwave-dressed polar molecules through a field-linked resonance. Starting from ground state NaK molecules, we create around $1.1\times 10^3$ tetratomic (NaK)$_2$ molecules, with a phase space density of $0.040(3)$ at a temperature of $134(3)\,\text{nK}$, more than $3000$ times colder than previously realized tetratomic molecules. We observe a maximum tetramer lifetime of $8(2)\,\text{ms}$ in free space without a notable change in the presence of an optical dipole trap, indicating these tetramers are collisionally stable. The measured binding energy and lifetime agree well with parameter-free calculations, which outlines pathways to further increase the lifetime of the tetramers. Moreover, we directly image the dissociated tetramers through microwave-field modulation to probe the anisotropy of their wave function in momentum space. Our result demonstrates a universal tool for assembling ultracold polyatomic molecules from smaller polar molecules, which is a crucial step towards Bose--Einstein condensation (BEC) of polyatomic molecules and towards a new crossover from a dipolar Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid to a BEC of tetramers. Additionally, the long-lived FL state provides an ideal starting point for deterministic optical transfer to deeply bound tetramer states.

Optical mirrors determine cavity properties by means of light reflection. Imperfect reflection gives rise to open cavities with photon loss. We study an open cavity made of atom-dimer mirrors with a tunable reflection spectrum. We find that the atomic cavity shows anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry. The anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ phase transition controlled by atomic couplings in mirrors indicates the emergence of two degenerate cavity supermodes. Interestingly, a threshold of mirror reflection is identified for realizing strong coherent cavity-atom coupling. This reflection threshold reveals the criterion of atomic mirrors to produce a good cavity. Moreover, cavity quantum electrodynamics with a probe atom shows mirror-tuned properties, including reflection-dependent polaritons formed by the cavity and probe atom. Our work presents a non-Hermitian theory of an anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ atomic cavity, which may have applications in quantum optics and quantum computation., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Recent years have witnessed tremendous progresses in creating and manipulating ground-state ultracold polar molecules. However, the two-body loss regardless of the chemical reactivities is still a hurdle for many future explorations. Here, we investigate the loss suppression of non-reactive bosonic $^{23}$Na$^{87}$Rb molecules with a circular polarized microwave blue-detuned to the rotational transition. We achieve suppression of the loss by two orders of magnitude with the lowest two-body loss rate coefficient reduced to $3\times10^{-12}~\rm{cm^3/s}$. Meanwhile, the elastic collision rate coefficient is increased to the $10^{-8}~\rm{cm^3/s}$ level. The large good-to-bad collision ratio has allowed us to carry out evaporative cooling of $^{23}$Na$^{87}$Rb with an efficiency of 1.7(2), increasing the phase-space density by a factor of 10. With further improvements, this technique holds great promises for creating a Bose-Einstein condensate of ultracold polar molecules., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures. Elemental fragmentation cross sections (EFCSs) of stable and unstable nuclides have been investigated with various projectile-target combinations at a wide range of incident energies. These data are critical to constrain and develop the theoretical reaction models and to study the propagation of galactic cosmic rays (GCR). In this work, we present a new EFCS measurement for $^{28}$Si on carbon at 218~MeV/nucleon performed at the Heavy Ion Research Facility (HIRFL-CSR) complex in Lanzhou. The impact of the target thickness has been well corrected to derive an accurate EFCS. Our present results with charge changes $\Delta Z$ = 1-6 are compared to the previous measurements and to the predictions from the models modified EPAX2, EPAX3, FRACS, ABRABLA07, NUCFRG2, and IQMD coupled with GEMINI (IQMD+GEMINI). All the models fail to describe the odd-even staggering strength in the elemental distribution, with the exception of the IQMD+GEMINI model, which can reproduce the EFCSs with an accuracy of better than 3.5\% for $\Delta Z\leq5$. The IQMD+GEMINI analysis shows that the odd-even staggering in EFCSs occurs in the sequential statistical decay stage rather than in the initial dynamical collision stage. This offers a reasonable approach to understand the underlying mechanism of fragmentation reactions., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

The angulon, a quasiparticle formed by a quantum rotor dressed by the excitations of a many-body bath, can be used to describe an impurity rotating in a fluid or solid environment. Here we propose a coherent state ansatz in the co-rotating frame which provides a comprehensive theoretical description of angulons. We reveal the quasiparticle properties, such as energies, quasiparticle weights and spectral functions, and show that our ansatz yields a persistent decrease in the impurity's rotational constant due to many-body dressing, consistent with experimental observations. From our study, a picture of the angulon emerges as an effective spin interacting with a magnetic field that is self-consistently generated by the molecule's rotation. Moreover, we discuss rotational spectroscopy, which focuses on the response of rotating molecules to a laser perturbation in the linear response regime. Importantly, we take into account initial-state interactions that have been neglected in prior studies and reveal their impact on the excitation spectrum. To examine the angulon instability regime, we use a single-excitation ansatz and obtain results consistent with experiments, in which a broadening of spectral lines is observed while phonon wings remain highly suppressed due to initial-state interactions.

For microwave-dressed polar molecules, we analytically derive an intermolecular potential composed of an anisotropic van der Waals shielding core and a long-range dipolar interaction. We validate this effective potential by comparing its scattering properties with those calculated using the full multi-channel interaction potential. It is shown that scattering resonances can be induced by a sufficiently strong microwave field. We also show the power of the effective potential in the study of many-body physics by calculating the critical temperature of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer pairing in the microwave-dressed NaK gas. It turns out that the effective potential is well-behaved and extremely suitable for studying the many-body physics of the molecular gases. Our results pave the way for the studies of the many-body physics of the ultracold microwave-dressed molecular gases.

We develop a non-Gaussian variational approach that enables us to study both equilibrium and far-from-equilibrium physics of the two-dimensional Fermi polaron. This method provides an unbiased analysis of the polaron-to-molecule phase transition without relying on truncations in the total number of particle-hole excitations. Our results -- which include the ground state energy and quasiparticle residue -- are in qualitative agreement with the known Monte Carlo calculations. The main advantage of the non-Gaussian states compared to conventional numerical methods is that they enable us to explore long-time polaron evolution and, in particular, study various spectral properties accessible to both solid-state and ultracold atom experiments. We design two types of radiofrequency spectroscopies to measure polaronic and molecular spectral functions. Depending on the parameter regime, we find that these spectral functions and fermionic density profiles near the impurity display either long-lived oscillations between the repulsive and attractive polaron branches or exhibit fast relaxational dynamics to the molecular state., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

Devices capable of deterministically manipulating the photonic entanglement are of paramount importance, since photons are the ideal messengers for quantum information. Here, we report a Rydberg-atom-based entanglement filter that preserves the desired photonic entangled state and deterministically blocks the transmission of the unwanted ones. Photonic entanglement with near-unity fidelity can be extracted from an input state with an arbitrarily low initial fidelity. The protocol is inherently robust, and succeeds both in the Rydberg blockade regime and in the interaction-induced dissipation regime. Exploring non-Hermitian phenomenology is an exciting frontier of modern physics. However, the demonstration of a non-Hermitian phenomenon that is quantum in nature has remained elusive. Here, we predict quantum non-Hermitian phenomena: the fractional quantum Zeno (FQZ) effect and FQZ-induced photon antibunching. We consider a quantum optics platform with reservoir engineering, where nonlinear emitters are coupled to a bath of decaying bosonic modes whose own decay rates form band structures. By engineering the dissipation band, the spontaneous emission of emitters can be suppressed by strong dissipation through an algebraic scaling with fractional exponents - the FQZ effect. This fractional scaling originates uniquely from the divergent dissipative density of states near the dissipation band edge, different from the traditional closed-bath context. We find FQZ-induced strong photon antibunching in the steady state of a driven emitter even for weak nonlinearities. Remarkably, we identify that the sub-Poissonian quantum statistics of photons, which has no classical analogs, stems here from the key role of non-Hermiticity. We present an ansatz for the ground states of the Quantum Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model, a paradigmatic model for quantum spin glasses. Our ansatz, based on the concept of generalized coherent states, very well captures the fundamental aspects of the model, including the ground state energy and the position of the spin glass phase transition. It further enables us to study some previously unexplored features, such as the non-vanishing longitudinal field regime and the entanglement structure of the ground states. We find that the ground state entanglement can be captured by a simple ensemble of weighted graph states with normally distributed phase gates, leading to a volume law entanglement, contrasting with predictions based on entanglement monogamy., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

We study the collapse dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate subjected to a sudden change of the scattering length to a negative value by adopting the self-consistent Gaussian state theory for mixed states. Compared to the Gross-Pitaevskii and the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approaches, both fluctuations and three-body loss are properly treated in our theory. We find a new type of collapse assisted by fluctuations which amplify the attractive interaction between atoms. Moreover, the calculation of the fluctuated atoms, the entropy, and the second-order correlation function showed that the collapsed gas was significantly deviated from a pure state., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures. We study the ground-state properties of self-bound dipolar droplets in quasi-two-dimensional geometry by using the Gaussian state theory. We show that there exist two quantum phases corresponding to the macroscopic squeezed vacuum and squeezed coherent states. We further show that the radial size versus atom number curve exhibits a double-dip structure, as a result of the multiple quantum phases. In particular, we find that the critical atom number for the self-bound droplets is determined by the quantum phases, which allows us to distinguish the quantum state and validates the Gaussian state theory., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Topological Mott insulator (TMI) with spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking and nonzero Chern number has been discovered in a real-space effective model for twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) at 3/4 filling in the strong coupling limit. However, the finite temperature properties of such a TMI state remain illusive. In this work, employing the state-of-the-art thermal tensor network and the perturbative field-theoretical approaches, we obtain the finite-$T$ phase diagram and the dynamical properties of the TBG model. The phase diagram includes the quantum anomalous Hall and charge density wave phases at low $T$, and a Ising transition separating them from the high-$T$ symmetric phases. Due to the proliferation of excitons -- particle-hole bound states -- the transitions take place at a significantly reduced temperature than the mean-field estimation. The exciton phase is accompanied with distinctive experimental signatures in such as charge compressibilities and optical conductivities close to the transition. Our work explains the smearing of the many-electron state topology by proliferating excitons and opens the avenue for controlled many-body investigations on finite-temperature states in the TBG and other quantum moir\'e systems., Comment: 5+15 pages, 4+12 figures

In this work, we highlight how trapped-ion quantum systems can be used to study generalized Holstein models, and benchmark expensive numerical calculations. We study a particular spin-Holstein model that can be implemented with arrays of ions confined by individual microtraps, and that is closely related to the Holstein model of condensed matter physics, used to describe electron-phonon interactions. In contrast to earlier proposals, we focus on simulating many-electron systems and inspect the competition between charge-density wave order, fermion pairing and phase separation. In our numerical study, we employ a combination of complementary approaches, based on non-Gaussian variational ansatz states and matrix product states, respectively. Establishing a minimal microscopic model for cuprates is a key step towards the elucidation of a high-$T_c$ mechanism. By a quantitative comparison with a recent \emph{in situ} angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurement in doped 1D cuprate chains, our simulation identifies a crucial contribution from long-range electron-phonon coupling beyond standard Hubbard models. Using reasonable ranges of coupling strengths and phonon energies, we obtain a strong attractive interaction between neighboring electrons, whose strength is comparable to experimental observations. Nonlocal couplings play a significant role in the mediation of neighboring interactions. Considering the structural and chemical similarity between 1D and 2D cuprate materials, this minimal model with long-range electron-phonon coupling will provide important new insights on cuprate high-$T_C$ superconductivity and related quantum phases., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Ordered ensembles of atoms, such as atomic arrays, exhibit distinctive features from their disordered counterpart. In particular, while collective modes in disordered ensembles show a linear optical response, collective subradiant excitations of subwavelength arrays are endowed with an intrinsic non-linearity. Such non-linearity has both a coherent and a dissipative component: two excitations propagating in the array scatter off each other leading to formation of correlations and to emission into free space modes. We show how to take advantage of such non-linearity to coherently prepare a single excitation in a subradiant (dark) collective state of a one dimensional array as well as to perform an entangling operation on dark states of parallel arrays. We discuss the main source of errors represented by disorder introduced by atomic center-of-mass fluctuations, and we propose a practical way to mitigate its effects., Comment: We corrected several typos present in the published version. We systematically investigate the ground-state properties of self-bound droplets of quasi-two-dimensional binary Bose gases by using the Gaussian state theory. We find that quantum droplets consists two macroscopic squeezed phases and a macroscopic coherent phase. We map out the phase diagram and determine all phase boundaries via both numerical and nearly analytical methods. In particular, we find three easily accessible signatures for the quantum phases and the stablization mechanism of the self-bound droplets by precisely measuring their radial size. Engineering quantum phases using light is a novel route to designing functional materials, where light-induced superconductivity is a successful example. Although this phenomenon has been realized experimentally, especially for the high-$T_c$ cuprates, the underlying mechanism remains mysterious. Using the recently developed variational non-Gaussian exact diagonalization method, we investigate a particular type of photoenhanced superconductivity by suppressing a competing charge order in a strongly correlated electron-electron and electron-phonon system. We find that the $d$-wave superconductivity pairing correlation can be enhanced by a pulsed laser, consistent with recent experiments based on gap characterizations. However, we also find that the pairing correlation length is heavily suppressed by the pump pulse, indicating that light-enhanced superconductivity may be of fluctuating nature. We introduce new families of pure quantum states that are constructed on top of the well-known Gilmore-Perelomov group-theoretic coherent states. We do this by constructing unitaries as the exponential of operators quadratic in Cartan subalgebra elements and by applying these unitaries to regular group-theoretic coherent states. This enables us to generate entanglement not found in the coherent states themselves, while retaining many of their desirable properties. Most importantly, we explain how the expectation values of physical observables can be evaluated efficiently. Examples include generalized spin-coherent states and generalized Gaussian states, but our construction can be applied to any Lie group represented on the Hilbert space of a quantum system. Using quantum systems to efficiently solve quantum chemistry problems is one of the long-sought applications of near-future quantum technologies. In a recent work, ultra-cold fermionic atoms have been proposed for these purposes by showing us how to simulate in an analog way the quantum chemistry Hamiltonian projected in a lattice basis set. Here, we continue exploring this path and go beyond these first results in several ways. First, we numerically benchmark the working conditions of the analog simulator, and find less demanding experimental setups where chemistry-like behaviour in three-dimensions can still be observed. We also provide a deeper understanding of the errors of the simulation appearing due to discretization and finite size effects and provide a way to mitigate them. Finally, we benchmark the simulator characterizing the behaviour of two-electron atoms (He) and molecules (HeH$^+$) beyond the example considered in the original work., Comment: Accepted version of the manuscript. 30 pages, 14 figures

Quantum manipulation of individual phonons could offer new resources for studying fundamental physics and creating an innovative platform in quantum information science. Here, we propose to generate quantum states of strongly correlated phonon bundles associated with the motion of a trapped atom. Our scheme operates in the atom-phonon resonance regime where the energy spectrum exhibits strong anharmonicity such that energy eigenstates with different phonon numbers can be well-resolved in the parameter space. Compared to earlier schemes operating in the far dispersive regime, the bundle states generated here contain a large steady-state phonon number. Therefore, the proposed system can be used as a high quality multiphonon source. Our results open up the possibility of using long-lived motional phonons as quantum resources, which could provide a broad physics community for applications in quantum metrology., Comment: 17 pages, 4+4 figures

Topological matter and topological optics have been studied in many systems, with promising applications in materials science and photonics technology. These advances motivate the study of the interaction between topological matter and light, as well as topological protection in light-matter interactions. In this work, we study a waveguide-interfaced topological atom array. The light-matter interaction is nontrivially modified by topology, yielding novel optical phenomena. We find topology-enhanced photon absorption from the waveguide for large Purcell factor, i.e., $\Gamma/\Gamma_0\gg 1$, where $\Gamma$ and $\Gamma_0$ are the atomic decays to waveguide and environment, respectively. To understand this unconventional photon absorption, we propose a multi-channel scattering approach and study the interaction spectra for edge- and bulk-state channels. We find that, by breaking inversion and time-reversal symmetries, optical anisotropy is enabled for reflection process, but the transmission is isotropic. Through a perturbation analysis of the edge-state channel, we show that the anisotropy in the reflection process originates from the waveguide-mediated non-Hermitian interaction. However, the inversion symmetry in the non-Hermitian interaction makes the transmission isotropic. At a topology-protected atomic spacing, the subradiant edge state exhibits huge anisotropy. Due to the interplay between edge- and bulk-state channels, a large topological bandgap enhances nonreciprocal reflection of photons in the waveguide for weakly broken time-reversal symmetry, i.e., $\Gamma_0/\Gamma\ll 1$, producing complete photon absorption. We show that our proposal can be implemented in superconducting quantum circuits. The topology-enhanced photon absorption is useful for quantum detection. The Fermi-polaron problem of a mobile impurity interacting with fermionic medium emerges in various contexts, ranging from the foundations of Landau's Fermi-liquid theory to electron-exciton interaction in semiconductors, to unusual properties of high-temperature superconductors. While classically the medium provides only a dissipative environment to the impurity, quantum picture of polaronic dressing is more intricate and arises from the interplay of few- and many-body aspects of the problem. The conventional expectation for the dynamics of Fermi polarons is that it is dissipative in character, and any excess energy is rapidly emitted away from the impurity as particle-hole excitations. Here we report a strikingly different type of polaron dynamics in a one-dimensional system of the impurity interacting repulsively with the fermions. When the total momentum of the system equals the Fermi momentum, there emerges a sharp collective mode corresponding to long-lived oscillations of the polaronic cloud surrounding the impurity. This mode can be observed experimentally with ultracold atoms using Ramsey interferometry and radio-frequency spectroscopy.

We present a systematic geometric framework to study closed quantum systems based on suitably chosen variational families. For the purpose of (A) real time evolution, (B) excitation spectra, (C) spectral functions and (D) imaginary time evolution, we show how the geometric approach highlights the necessity to distinguish between two classes of manifolds: K\"ahler and non-K\"ahler. Traditional variational methods typically require the variational family to be a K\"ahler manifold, where multiplication by the imaginary unit preserves the tangent spaces. This covers the vast majority of cases studied in the literature. However, recently proposed classes of generalized Gaussian states make it necessary to also include the non-K\"ahler case, which has already been encountered occasionally. We illustrate our approach in detail with a range of concrete examples where the geometric structures of the considered manifolds are particularly relevant. We investigate the self-bound states of dipolar Dy condensates with the Gaussian-state ansatz which improves the conventional coherent-state ansatz with multimode squeezed coherent states. We show that the self-bound states consist of the experimentally observed self-bound liquid phase and the unobserved self-bound gas phase. The numerically obtained gas-liquid boundary is in good agreement with experimental data. Our theory also allows one to extract the real part of the three-body coupling constant of the Dy atoms from the particle number distribution of the condensates. In particular, we results show that the self-bound states are stabilized by the short-range three-body repulsion. Benchmarking numerical methods in quantum chemistry is one of the key opportunities that quantum simulators can offer. Here, we propose an analog simulator for discrete 2D quantum chemistry models based on cold atoms in optical lattices. We first analyze how to simulate simple models, like the discrete versions of H and H$_2^+$, using a single fermionic atom. We then show that a single bosonic atom can mediate an effective Coulomb repulsion between two fermions, leading to the analog of molecular Hydrogen in two dimensions. We extend this approach to larger systems by introducing as many mediating atoms as fermions, and derive the effective repulsion law. We introduce a non-linear differential flow equation for density matrices that provides a monotonic decrease of the free energy and reaches a fixed point at the Gibbs thermal state. We use this equation to build a variational approach for analyzing equilibrium states of many-body systems and demonstrate that it can be applied to a broad class of states, including all bosonic and fermionic Gaussian states, as well as their generalizations obtained by unitary transformations, such as polaron transformations, in electron-phonon systems. We benchmark this method with a BCS lattice Hamiltonian and apply it to the Holstein model in two dimensions. For the latter, our approach reproduces the transition between the BCS pairing regime at weak interactions and the polaronic regime at stronger interactions, displaying phase separation between superconducting and charge-density wave phases., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, Supplemental Material 6 pages

We propose a numerical method which embeds the variational non-Gaussian wavefunction approach within exact diagonalization, allowing for efficient treatment of correlated systems with both electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions. Using a generalized polaron transformation, we construct a variational wavefunction that absorbs entanglement between electrons and phonons into a variational non-Gaussian transformation; exact diagonalization is then used to treat the electronic part of the wavefunction exactly, thus taking into account high-order correlation effects beyond the Gaussian level. Keeping the full electronic Hilbert space, the complexity is increased only by a polynomial scaling factor relative to the exact diagonalization calculation for pure electrons. As an example, we use this method to study ground-state properties of the two-dimensional Hubbard-Holstein model, providing evidence for the existence of intervening phases between the spin and charge-ordered states. In particular, we find one of the intervening phases has strong charge susceptibility and binding energy, but is distinct from a charge-density-wave ordered state, while the other intervening phase displays superconductivity at weak couplings. This method, as a general framework, can be extended to treat excited states and dynamics, as well as a wide range of systems with both electron-electron and electron-boson interactions., Comment: 19 pages, 17 figures

Within the framework of the Gaussian-state theory, we show that the quantum many-body ground state of a trapped condensate with weakly attractive interaction is a single-mode squeezed vacuum state, as oppose to the coherent state under repulsive interaction. The spatial mode of the squeezed-state condensates satisfies a Gross-Pitaevskii like equation in which the interaction strength is augmented by a factor $3$ due to the large particle fluctuation of the squeezed state. We also study the collective excitations of the condensates by the tangential space projection, which leads to new two-particle excitations and confirms the phase transition from coherent-state to squeezed-state condensates. Our investigation clarifies the quantum states of the attractive condensates and will shed new light on research of the droplet phases in dipolar and multicomponent condensates., Comment: 5 pages 2 figures

The quest for new functionalities in quantum materials has recently been extended to non-equilibrium states, which are interesting both because they exhibit new physical phenomena and because of their potential for high-speed device applications. Notable advances have been made in the creation of metastable phases and in Floquet engineering under external periodic driving. In the context of non-equilibrium superconductivity, examples have included the generation of transient superconductivity above the thermodynamic transition temperature, the excitation of coherent Higgs mode oscillations, and the optical control of the interlayer phase in cuprates. Here, we propose theoretically a novel non-equilibrium phenomenon, through which a prompt quench from a metal to a transient superconducting state could induce large oscillations of the order parameter amplitude. We argue that this oscillating mode could act as a source of parametric amplification of the incident radiation. We report experimental results on optically driven K$_3$C$_{60}$ that are consistent with these predictions. The effect is found to disappear when the onset of the excitation becomes slower than the Higgs mode period, consistent with the theory proposed here. These results open new possibilities for the use of collective modes in many-body systems to induce non-linear optical effects., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

We systematically extend Bogoliubov theory beyond the mean field approximation of the Bose-Hubbard model in the superfluid phase. Our approach is based on the time dependent variational principle applied to the family of all Gaussian states (i.e. Gaussian TDVP). First, we find the best ground state approximation within our variational class using imaginary time evolution in 1d, 2d and 3d. We benchmark our results by comparing to Bogoliubov theory and DMRG in 1d. Second, we compute the approximate 1- and 2-particle excitation spectrum as eigenvalues of the linearized projected equations of motion (linearized TDVP). We find the gapless Goldstone mode, a continuum of 2-particle excitations and a doublon mode. We discuss the relation of the gap between Goldstone mode and 2-particle continuum to the excitation energy of the Higgs mode. Third, we compute linear response functions for perturbations describing density variation and lattice modulation and discuss their relations to experiment. Our methods can be applied to any perturbations that are linear or quadratic in creation/annihilation operators. Finally, we provide a comprehensive overview how our results are related to well-known methods, such as traditional Bogoliubov theory and random phase approximation.

We develop an efficient variational approach to studying dynamics of a localized quantum spin coupled to a bath of mobile spinful bosons. We use parity symmetry to decouple the impurity spin from the environment via a canonical transformation and reduce the problem to a model of the interacting bosonic bath. We describe coherent time evolution of the latter using bosonic Gaussian states as a variational ansatz. We provide full analytical expressions for equations describing variational time evolution that can be applied to study in- and out-of-equilibrium phenomena in a wide class of quantum impurity problems. In the accompanying paper [Y. Ashida {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 183001 (2019)], we present a concrete application of this general formalism to the analysis of the Rydberg Central Spin Model, in which the spin-1/2 Rydberg impurity undergoes spin-changing collisions in a dense cloud of two-component ultracold bosons. To illustrate new features arising from orbital motion of the bath atoms, we compare our results to the Monte Carlo study of the model with spatially localized bosons in the bath, in which random positions of the atoms give rise to random couplings of the standard central spin model., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures. We consider dynamics of a Rydberg impurity in a cloud of ultracold bosonic atoms in which the Rydberg electron can undergo spin-changing collisions with surrounding atoms. This system realizes a new type of the quantum impurity problem that compounds essential features of the Kondo model, the Bose polaron, and the central spin model. To capture the interplay of the Rydberg-electron spin dynamics and the orbital motion of atoms, we employ a new variational method that combines an impurity-decoupling transformation with a Gaussian ansatz for the bath particles. We find several unexpected features of this model that are not present in traditional impurity problems, including interaction-induced renormalization of the absorption spectrum that eludes simple explanations from molecular bound states, and long-lasting oscillations of the Rydberg-electron spin. We discuss generalizations of our analysis to other systems in atomic physics and quantum chemistry, where an electron excitation of high orbital quantum number interacts with a spinful quantum bath., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures. We analyze ultrafast tunneling experiments in which electron transport through a localized orbital is induced by a single cycle THz pulse. We include both electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions on the localized orbital using the Anderson-Holstein model and consider two possible filling factors, the singly occupied Kondo regime and the doubly occupied regime relevant to recent experiments with a pentacene molecule. Our analysis is based on variational non-Gaussian states and provides the accurate description of the degrees of freedom at very different energies, from the high microscopic energy scales to the Kondo temperature $T_K$. To establish the validity of the new method we apply this formalism to study the Anderson model in the Kondo regime in the absence of coupling to phonons. We demonstrate that it correctly reproduces key properties of the model, including the screening of the impurity spin, formation of the resonance at the Fermi energy, and a linear conductance of $2e^2/h$. We discuss the suppression of the Kondo resonance by the electron-phonon interaction on the impurity site. When analyzing THz STM experiments we compute the time dependence of the key physical quantities, including current, the number of electrons on the localized orbital, and the number of excited phonons. We find long-lived oscillations of the phonon that persist long after the end of the pulse. In this work we study the scattering of pairs of photons by a two-level system ultrastrongly coupled to a one-dimensional waveguide. We describe this problem using a spin-boson model with an Ohmic environment $J(\omega)=\pi\alpha\omega^1.$ We show that when coupling strength lays is about $\alpha\leq 1,$ the dynamics is well approximated by a polaron Hamiltonian, under the approximation of a conserved number of excitations. In this regime, we develop analytical predictions for the single- and two-photon scattering matrix computed with a Green's function method.

Surprising properties of doped Mott insulators are at the heart of many quantum materials, including transition metal oxides and organic materials. The key to unraveling complex phenomena observed in these systems lies in understanding the interplay of spin and charge degrees of freedom. One of the most debated questions concerns the nature of charge carriers in a background of fluctuating spins. To shed new light on this problem, we suggest a simplified model with mixed dimensionality, where holes move through a Mott insulator unidirectionally while spin exchange interactions are two dimensional. By studying individual holes in this system, we find direct evidence for the formation of mesonic bound states of holons and spinons, connected by a string of displaced spins -- a precursor of the spin-charge separation obtained in the 1D limit of the model. Our predictions can be tested using ultracold atoms in a quantum gas microscope, allowing to directly image spinons and holons, and reveal the short-range hidden string order which we predict in this model., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, 4 pages methods section

We provide a detailed formulation of the recently proposed variational approach [Y. Ashida et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 026805 (2018)] to study ground-state properties and out-of-equilibrium dynamics for generic quantum spin-impurity systems. Motivated by the original ideas by Tomonaga, Lee, Low, and Pines, we construct a canonical transformation that completely decouples the impurity from the bath degrees of freedom. By combining this transformation with a Gaussian ansatz for the fermionic bath, we obtain a family of variational many-body states that can efficiently encode the strong entanglement between the impurity and fermions of the bath. We give a detailed derivation of equations of motions in the imaginary- and real-time evolutions on the variational manifold. We benchmark our approach by applying it to investigate ground-state and dynamical properties of the anisotropic Kondo model and compare results with those obtained using matrix-product state (MPS) ansatz. We show that our approach can achieve an accuracy comparable to MPS-based methods with several orders of magnitude fewer variational parameters than the corresponding MPS ansatz. Comparisons to the Yosida ansatz and the exact solution from the Bethe ansatz are also discussed. We use our approach to investigate the two-lead Kondo model and analyze its long-time spatiotemporal behavior and the conductance behavior at finite bias and magnetic fields. A versatile and efficient variational approach is developed to solve in- and out-of-equilibrium problems of generic quantum spin-impurity systems. Employing the discrete symmetry hidden in spin-impurity models, we present a new canonical transformation that completely decouples the impurity and bath degrees of freedom. Combining it with Gaussian states, we present a family of many-body states to efficiently encode nontrivial impurity-bath correlations. We demonstrate its successful application to the anisotropic and two-lead Kondo models by studying their spatiotemporal dynamics and universal behavior in the correlations, relaxation times and the differential conductance. We compare them to previous analytical and numerical results. In particular, we apply our method to study new types of nonequilibrium phenomena that have not been studied by other methods, such as long-time crossover in the ferromagnetic easy-plane Kondo model. We propose a scheme to realize the Kondo model with tunable anisotropy using alkaline-earth atoms in an optical lattice. The new feature of our setup is Floquet engineering of interactions using time-dependent Zeeman shifts, that can be realized either using state-dependent optical Stark shifts or magnetic fields. The properties of the resulting Kondo model strongly depend on the anisotropy of the ferromagnetic interactions. In particular, easy-plane couplings give rise to Kondo singlet formation even though microscopic interactions are all ferromagnetic. We discuss both equilibrium and dynamical properties of the system that can be measured with ultracold atoms, including the impurity spin susceptibility, the impurity spin relaxation rate, as well as the equilibrium and dynamical spin correlations between the impurity and the ferromagnetic bath atoms. We analyze the non-equilibrium time evolution of the system using a variational non-Gaussian approach, which allows us to explore coherent dynamics over both short and long timescales, as set by the bandwidth and the Kondo singlet formation, respectively. In the quench-type experiments, when the Kondo interaction is suddenly switched on, we find that real-time dynamics shows crossovers reminiscent of poor man's renormalization group flow used to describe equilibrium systems. For bare easy-plane ferromagnetic couplings, this allows us to follow the formation of the Kondo screening cloud as the dynamics crosses over from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic behavior. On the other side of the phase diagram, our scheme makes it possible to measure quantum corrections to the well-known Korringa law describing the temperature dependence of the impurity spin relaxation rate. The RIBLL2 in-flight separator at IMP, the secondary beam line between two storage rings at the \blue{\uwave{Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou (HIRFL-CSR)}}, has been commissioned to study the rare-isotope beam (RIB) physics at around 300 MeV/nucleon for the first time, in combination of the external target facility (ETF). The unambiguous particle identification in mass and charge states for $^{18}$O and $^{40}$Ar fragments has been achieved in recent experiments.
