Gauge fields are ubiquitous in modern quantum physics. In superfluids, quantized vortices can be induced by gauge fields. Here we demonstrate the first experimental observation of vortex nucleations in spinor Bose-Einstein Condensates under radially-localized synthetic magnetic fields. The associated gauge potentials $\vec{A}$ are azimuthal and created by light-induced spin-orbital-angular-momentum coupling, generating circulating azimuthal velocity fields $\propto \vec{p}-\vec{A}$ even when the canonical momentum $\vec{p}= 0$. A sufficiently large azimuthal velocity peaked near the condensate center results in a dynamically unstable localized excitation that initiates vortex nucleations. This excitation appears as a spontaneously-formed vortex-antivortex pair near the cloud center. Following the initially developed instability, the dynamics is governed by the asymmetry and dissipation, where the atomic orbital angular momentum evolves and can reach the value of the ground state. Our system exhibits dynamical and Landau instabilities and agrees reasonably with time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii simulations.

Colliders are built on a foundation of superconducting magnet technology that provides strong dipole magnets to maintain the beam orbit and strong focusing magnets to enable the extraordinary luminosity required to probe physics at the energy frontier. The dipole magnet strength plays a critical role in dictating the energy reach of a collider, and the superconducting magnets are arguably the dominant cost driver for future collider facilities. As the community considers opportunities to explore new energy frontiers, the importance of advanced magnet technology - both in terms of magnet performance and in the magnet technology's potential for cost reduction - is evident, as the technology status is essential for informed decisions on targets for physics reach and facility feasibility., Comment: contribution to Snowmass 2021

As the only high-temperature superconducting (HTS) material available as an isotropic, twisted, multifilamentary round wire, Bi-2212 is very promising for expanding the high-field superconducting accelerator magnet toolbox beyond the round-wire, isotropic Nb-Ti and Nb3Sn conductors used by HEP so far. In this paper, we describe the important roles that Bi-2212 might play for future high energy circular colliders including both high energy proton and muon colliders. We describe its present technology status (conductor development, magnet design concepts, prototype magnet status) and then provide a ten-year plan for >15 T accelerator magnets and >25 T solenoid magnets within an integrated strategy to engage industry and the entire US and international scientific enterprise interested in HTS magnet applications., Comment: contribution to Snowmass 2021

In this White Paper for the Snowmass 2021 Process, we propose the establishment of a magnet Leading-Edge technology And Feasibility-directed Program (LEAF Program) to achieve readiness for a future collider decision on the timescale of the next decade. The LEAF Program would rely on, and be synergetic with, generic R&D efforts presently covered - in the US - by the Magnet Development Program (MDP), the Conductor Procurement and R&D (CPRD) Program and other activities in the Office of HEP supported by Early Career Awards (ECA) or Lab Directed R&D (LDRD) funds. Where possible, ties to synergetic efforts in other Offices of DOE or NSF are highlighted and suggested as wider Collaborative efforts on the National scale. International efforts are also mentioned as potential partners in the LEAF Program. We envision the LEAF Program to concentrate on demonstrating the feasibility of magnets for muon colliders as well as next generation high energy hadron colliders, pursuing, where necessary and warranted by the nature of the application, the transition from R&D models to long models/prototypes. The LEAF Program will naturally drive accelerator-quality and experiment-interface design considerations. Spectral clustering is a popular algorithm that clusters points using the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of Laplacian matrices derived from the data. For years, spectral clustering has been working mysteriously. This paper explains spectral clustering by dividing it into two categories based on whether the graph Laplacian is fully connected or not. For a fully connected graph, this paper demonstrates the dimension reduction part by offering an objective function: the covariance between the original data points' similarities and the mapped data points' similarities. For a multi-connected graph, this paper proves that with a proper $k$, the first $k$ eigenvectors are the indicators of the connected components. We present results from the commissioning and early science programs of FIDEOS, the new high-resolution echelle spectrograph developed at the Centre of Astro Engineering of Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, and recently installed at the ESO 1m telescope of La Silla. The instrument provides spectral resolution R = 43,000 in the visible spectral range 420-800 nm, reaching a limiting magnitude of 11 in V band. Precision in the measurement of radial velocity is guaranteed by light feeding with an octagonal optical fibre, suitable mechanical isolation, thermal stabilisation, and simultaneous wavelength calibration. Currently the instrument reaches radial velocity stability of = 8 m/s over several consecutive nights of observation.

We present our approach for robotic perception in cluttered scenes that led to winning the recent Amazon Robotics Challenge (ARC) 2017. Next to small objects with shiny and transparent surfaces, the biggest challenge of the 2017 competition was the introduction of unseen categories. In contrast to traditional approaches which require large collections of annotated data and many hours of training, the task here was to obtain a robust perception pipeline with only few minutes of data acquisition and training time. To that end, we present two strategies that we explored. One is a deep metric learning approach that works in three separate steps: semantic-agnostic boundary detection, patch classification and pixel-wise voting. The other is a fully-supervised semantic segmentation approach with efficient dataset collection. We conduct an extensive analysis of the two methods on our ARC 2017 dataset. Interestingly, only few examples of each class are sufficient to fine-tune even very deep convolutional neural networks for this specific task.

Many charged polymers, including nucleic acids, are locally stiff. Their bending rigidity -- quantified by the persistence length --, depends crucially on Coulombic features, such as the ionic strength of the solution which offers a convenient experimental route for tuning the rigidity. While the classic Odijk-Skolnick-Fixman treatment fails for realistic parameter values, we derive a simple analytical formula for the electrostatic persistence length. It is shown to be in remarkable agreement with numerically obtained Poisson-Boltzmann theory results, thereby fully accounting for non-linearities, among which counter-ion condensation effects. Specified to double-stranded DNA, our work reveals that the widely used bare persistence length of 500\,\AA\ is overestimated by some 20%

A recently developed reduced activation ferritic/martensitic steel MNHS was irradiated with 200keV He ions to a fluence of 1E21ions/m^2 at 450 celsius degree and 1E20ions/m^2 at 300 celsius degree and 450 celsius degree, respectively. The irradiation hardening of the steel was investigated by nanoindentation measurements combined with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis. Dispersed barrier-hardening (DBH) model was applied to predict the hardness increments based on TEM analysis. The predicted hardness increments are consistent with the values obtained by nanoindentation tests. It is found that dislocation loops and He bubbles are hard barriers against dislocation motion and they are the main contributions to He irradiation-induced hardening of MNHS steel. The obstacle strength of He bubbles is stronger than the obstacle strength of dislocation loops.

High engineering critical current density JE of >500 A/mm2 at 20 T and 4.2 K can be regularly achieved in Ag-sheathed multifilamentary Bi2Sr2CaCu2Ox (Bi-2212) round wire when the sample length is several centimeters. However, JE(20 T) in Bi-2212 wires of several meters length, as well as longer pieces wound in coils, rarely exceeds 200 A/mm2. Moreover, long-length wires often exhibit signs of Bi-2212 leakage after melt processing that are rarely found in short, open-end samples. We studied the length dependence of JE of state-of-the-art powder-in-tube (PIT) Bi-2212 wires and gases released by them during melt processing using mass spectroscopy, confirming that JE degradation with length is due to wire swelling produced by high internal gas pressures at elevated temperatures [1,2]. We further modeled the gas transport in Bi-2212 wires and examined the wire expansion at critical stages of the melt processing of as-drawn PIT wires and the wires that received a degassing treatment or a cold-densification treatment before melt processing. These investigations showed that internal gas pressure in long-length wires drives creep of the Ag sheath during the heat treatment, causing wire to expand, lowering the density of Bi-2212 filaments, and therefore degrading the wire JE; the creep rupture of silver sheath naturally leads to the leakage of Bi-2212 liquid. Our work shows that proper control of such creep is the key to preventing Bi-2212 leakage and achieving high JE in long-length Bi-2212 conductors and coils.

Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x is the only cuprate superconductor that can be made into a round-wire conductor form with a high enough critical current density Jc for applications. Here we show that the Jc(5 T,4.2 K) of such Ag-sheathed filamentary wires can be doubled to more than 1.4x10^5 A/cm^2 by low temperature oxygenation. Careful analysis shows that the improved performance is associated with a 12 K reduction in transition temperature Tc to 80 K and a significant enhancement in intergranular connectivity. In spite of the macroscopically untextured nature of the wire, overdoping is highly effective in producing high Jc values., Comment: 4 figures

Epitaxial graphene films were formed on the Si-face of semi-insulating 4H-SiC substrates by a high temperature sublimation process. A high-k gate stack on epitaxial graphene is realized by inserting a fully oxidized nanometer thin aluminum film as a seeding layer followed by an atomic-layer deposition process. The electrical properties of epitaxial graphene films are sustained after gate stack formation without significant degradation. At low temperatures, the quantum-Hall effect in Hall resistance is observed along with pronounced Shubnikov-de Hass oscillations in diagonal magneto-resistance of gated epitaxial graphene on SiC (0001)., Comment: 2 new references added

Epitaxial graphene films have been formed on the C-face of semi-insulating 4H-SiC substrates by a high temperature sublimation process. Nano-scale square antidot arrays have been fabricated on these graphene films. At low temperatures, magneto-conductance in these films exhibits pronounced Aharonov-Bohm oscillations with the period corresponding to magnetic flux quanta added to the area of a single antidot. At low fields, weak localization is observed and its visibility is enhanced by intravalley scattering on antidot edges. At high fields, we observe two distinctive minima in magnetoconductance which can be attributed to commensurability oscillations between classical cyclotron orbits and antidot array. Si deposition on H terminated Si(100)-2x1 and 3x1 surfaces at temperatures 300-530 K is studied by scanning tunneling microscopy. Hydrogen apparently hinders Si adatom diffusion and enhances surface roughening. The post-growth annealing effect is analyzed. Hydrogen is shown to remain on the growth front up to at least 10 ML. The dihydride units on the 3x1 surfaces further suppress the Si adatom diffusion and increase surface roughness., Comment: 26 pages, 9 figures

The Si(001) surface morphology during ion sputtering at elevated temperatures and solid phase epitaxy following ion sputtering at room temperature has been investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy. Two types of antiphase boundaries form on Si(001) surfaces during ion sputtering and solid phase epitaxy. One type of antiphase boundary, the AP2 antiphase boundary, contributes to the surface roughening. AP2 antiphase boundaries are stable up to 973K, and ion sputtering and solid phase epitaxy performed at 973K result in atomically flat Si(001) surfaces., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures, to be published in Surface Science

Si(100) surfaces were prepared by wet-chemical etching followed by 0.3-1.5keV Ar ion sputtering, either at elevated or room temperature. After a brief anneal under ultrahigh vacuum conditions, the resulting surfaces were examined by scanning tunneling microscopy. We find that wet-chemical etching alone cannot produce a clean and flat Si(100) surface. However, subsequent 300eV Ar ion sputtering at room temperature followed by a 973K anneal yields atomically clean and flat Si(100) surfaces suitable for nanoscale device fabrication., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, to be published in Applied Surface Science

An ultradense 2D electron system can be realized by adsorbing PH$_3$ precursor molecules onto an atomically clean Si surface, followed by epitaxial Si overgrowth. By controlling the PH$_3$ coverage the carrier density of such system can easily reach $\sim 10^{14}$ cm$^{-2}$, exceeding that typically found in GaAs/AlGaAs structures by more than two-three orders of magnitude. We report on a first systematic characterization of such novel system by means of standard magnetotransport. The main findings include logarithmic temperature dependence of zero-field conductivity and logarithmic negative magnetoresistance. We analyzed the results in terms of scaling theory of localization in two dimensions.

Temperature dependent extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra were measured for a 3.3 at% Ga stabilized Pu alloy over the range T= 20 - 300 K at both the Ga K-edge and the Pu L_III-edge. The temperature dependence of the pair-distance distribution widths, \sigma(T) was accurately modeled using a correlated-Debye model for the lattice vibrational properties, suggesting Debye-like behavior in this material. We obtain pair- specific correlated-Debye temperatures, \Theta_cD, of 110.7 +/- 1.7 K and 202.6 +/- 3.7 K, for the Pu-Pu and Ga-Pu pairs, respectively. These results represent the first unambiguous determination of Ga-specific vibrational properties in PuGa alloys, and indicate the Ga-Pu bonds are significantly stronger than the Pu-Pu bonds. Reports on a study of economic knowledge and attitudes of 873 upper secondary school, Chinese students. Finds that Chinese students performed better than northern California students on the Test of Economic Literacy. Concludes that the relatively high level of economic knowledge and the impact of Western economic ideas will encourage further economic reforms in China. (CFR)

This paper describes the MAM optical setup, the alignment process, the current data and how the performance relates to SIM.

This paper will compare the performance of various algorithms using the MAM data, and will aid in our recommendation of how the SIM flight system should process the science and guide interferometer data.

A new method to prepare polymeric PLOT columns by using in situ polymerization technology is described. The method involves a straightforward in situ polymerization of the monomer. The polymer produced is directly coated on the metal tubing. This eliminates many of the steps needed in conventional polymeric PLOT column preparation. Our method is easy to operate and produces very reproducible columns, as shown previously (T. C. Shen. J. Chromatogr. Sci. 30, 239, 1992). The effects of solvents, tubing pretreatments, initiators and reaction temperatures in the preparation of PLOT columns are studied. Several columns have been developed to separate (1) highly polar compounds, such as water and ammonia or water and HCN, and (2) hydrocarbons and inert gases. A recent improvement has allowed us to produce bonded polymeric PLOT columns. These were studied, and the results are included also.

Studies of divinylbenzene copolymers and dimethacrylate homopolymers indicate that the polymer pore size controls the separation of water and ammonia on porous-layer-open-tubular (PLOT) columns. To a lesser degree, the polarity of the polymers also affects the separation of a water-ammonia gas mixture. Our results demonstrate that the pore size can be regulated by controlling the cross-linking density or the chain length between the cross-linking functional groups. An optimum pore size will provide the best separation of water and ammonia.

A novel method for preparation of porous-layer open-tubular (PLOT) columns is described. The method involves a simple and reproducible, straight-forward in-situ polymerization of monomer directly on the metal tube.

The investigation of the Saturnian System is being proposed jointly by NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA). The mission is scheduled for a launch in 1996. The mission provides an opportunity for close observation and exploration of Saturn's atmosphere, the complex Saturnian System of satellites and rings, Titan (Saturn's planet-sized moon), and Saturn's magnetosphere. The mission gives special attention to Titan which is blanketed by a thick, opaque atmosphere. An atmospheric probe will be deposited into the Titan Atmosphere for in situ measurement during a slow, three hour descent to the surface. The results from this analysis may provide the information which is important to the research of chemical evolution, and the origin of life. An analytical system was developed as a part of the Titan Aerosol Gas Experiment (TAGEX), a proposed experiment for the Cassini Mission. This system will use two highly sensitive detectors, the Metastable Ionization Detector (MID) and the Ion Mobility Spectrometer (IMS). Unfortunately, when commercial columns are utilized with these highly sensitive detectors, volatile components continuously bleed from the column and interfere with the detector. In addition, light columns must be able to separate polar and nonpolar organic chemicals within 10-15 minutes under isothermal conditions for the Titan Mission. Therefore, a highly crosslinked silicone polymeric packed column was developed which is able to efficiently separate amines, alcohols, and hydrocarbons with retention times less that 15 minutes at 100 C isothermal condition.

A normal mode analysis is used to calculate the transmission and reflection coefficients for a surface polariton propagating along the interface between a surface active medium and a dielectric and incident normally on a vertical dielectric barrier of finite thickness or a thin dielectric film of finite length. The efficiencies of conversion of the surface polariton into transmitted and reflected bulk waves are also determined. The radiation patterns associated with the latter waves are presented.

Carbon fibers which are electrically insulating but still maintain the mechanical properties of the original carbon fibers were investigated. Three approaches were taken to increase the electrical resistance of carbon fibers: (1) boron nitride (BN) coatings; (2) doping of carbon fibers to alter their electrical properties; and (3) low temperature final heat treatment. The structure of carbon fibers and its effect upon properties was also studied. Results are presented.
