In recent works, we have shown how $n$-point correlation functions in perturbative QFT can be computed without running into intermediate divergences. Here we want to illustrate explicitly that one can calculate the quantum effective potential by the same method. As a main example, we consider a theory with two fields having large and small vacuum expectation values (vev). We show that the minimal Weyl-invariant Einstein-Cartan gravity in combination with the Standard Model of particle physics contains just one extra scalar degree of freedom (in addition to the graviton and the Standard Model fields) with the properties of an axion-like particle which can solve the strong CP-problem. The smallness of this particle's mass as well as of the cosmological constant is ensured by tiny values of the gauge coupling constants of the local Lorentz group. The tree value of the Higgs boson mass and that of Majorana leptons (if added to the Standard Model to solve the neutrino mass, baryogenesis and dark matter problems) are very small or vanishing, opening the possibility of their computability in terms of the fundamental parameters of the theory due to nonperturbative effects., Comment: 34 pages, no figures

We propose a new class of single-field scalar quantum field theories with non-polynomial interactions leading to a two-point Green's function that can be naturally continued beyond the naive cutoff scale. This provides a new prospect for self-completing theories in the UV-domain. In our approach, the formal power series for the scalar potential has a vanishing radius of convergence and is defined through Borel resummation. We discuss concrete examples, among others with a spectral function that vanishes at large momenta, potentially leading to an asymptotically free theory. The Universe may contain sufficiently small size matter-antimatter domains at temperatures of a few hundred MeV, without violating the success of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. We demonstrate that this possibility enhances the keV scale sterile neutrino production and may lead to its abundance consistent with the observable energy density of dark matter (DM). We suggest that the separation of matter and antimatter, creating temporarily macroscopic domains occupied by hadronic matter and quark-gluon plasma with an excess of baryons over anti-baryons and vice versa largely exceeding the average baryon and lepton asymmetries of the Universe, may appear because of the first-order QCD phase transition. Although the lattice studies provided a piece of evidence in favour of a smooth crossover between the hadronic and quark-gluon phases at high temperatures and zero chemical potential for baryonic number, we argue that these simulations might not rule out relatively weekly first-order phase transition. We discuss several scenarios of matter-antimatter separation at the QCD phase transition and the production of DM sterile neutrinos in each of them. One of the possibilities requires the presence of lepton asymmetry of the Universe, which can be smaller than that needed for the DM correct abundance in the homogeneous case., Comment: 38 pages, 6 figures

We find the conditions under which scale-invariant Einstein-Cartan gravity with scalar matter fields leads to an approximate conformal invariance of the flat space particle theory up to energies of the order of the Planck mass. In the minimal setup, these models, in addition to the fields of the Standard Model and the graviton, contain only one extra particle -- a massless dilaton. Theories of this type can pave the way for a self-completion all the way up the Planck scale and lead to rather universal inflationary predictions, close to those of the simplest Higgs-inflation scenario in the metric theory of gravity., Comment: 38 pages, 2 figures

For inflation driven by the Higgs field coupled non-minimally to gravity, we study the cutoff energy scale above which perturbation theory breaks down. Employing the metric formulation, we first give an overview of known results and then provide a new way to calculate a lower bound on the cutoff. Our approach neither relies on a gauge choice nor does it require any calculation of amplitudes. Instead, it exploits the fact that the S-matrix is invariant under field redefinitions. In agreement with previous findings, we demonstrate that the cutoff is significantly higher during inflation than in vacuum, which ensures the robustness of semi-classical predictions. The existence of non-zero neutrino masses points to the likely existence of multiple SM neutral fermions. When such states are heavy enough that they cannot be produced in oscillations, they are referred to as Heavy Neutral Leptons (HNLs). In this white paper we discuss the present experimental status of HNLs including colliders, beta decay, accelerators, as well as astrophysical and cosmological impacts. We discuss the importance of continuing to search for HNLs, and its potential impact on our understanding on key fundamental questions, and additionally we outline the future prospects for next-generation future experiments or upcoming accelerator run scenarios., Comment: 82 pages, 34 figures. In this Letter, we address the question of whether the conformal invariance can be considered as a global symmetry of a theory of fundamental interactions. To describe Nature, this theory must contain a mechanism of spontaneous breaking of the scale symmetry. Besides that, the fundamental theory must include gravity, whereas all known extensions of the conformal invariance to the curved space-time suffer from the Weyl anomaly. We show that conformal symmetry can be made free from the quantum anomaly only in the flat space. The presence of gravity would reduce the global symmetry group of the fundamental theory to the scale invariance only. We study a finite, divergence free approach to renormalisation originally proposed in the early '70s by Blaer and Young, and Callan. It is based on equations similar to the Callan-Symanzik equations, and introduced in the context of $\lambda \phi^4$ theory. The standard way to do computations in Quantum Field Theory (QFT) often results in the requirement of dramatic cancellations between contributions induced by a "heavy" sector into the physical observables of the "light" (or low energy) sector - the phenomenon known as "hierarchy problem". This procedure uses divergent multi-loop Feynman diagrams, their regularisation to handle the UV divergences, and then renormalisation to remove them. At the same time, the ultimate outcome of the renormalisation is the mapping of several finite parameters defining the renormalisable field theory into different observables (e.g. all kinds of particle cross-sections). In this paper, we first demonstrate how to relate the parameters of the theory to observables without running into intermediate UV divergences. Then we go one step further: we show how in theories with different mass scales, all physics of the "light" sector can be computed in a way which does not require dramatic cancellations induced by physics of the "heavy" sector. The existence of such a technique suggests that the "hierarchy problem" in renormalisable theories is not really physical, but rather an artefact of the conventional procedure to compute correlation functions. We show how Einstein-Cartan gravity can accommodate both global scale and local scale (Weyl) invariance. To this end, we construct a wide class of models with nonpropagaing torsion and a nonminimally coupled scalar field. In phenomenological applications the scalar field is associated with the Higgs boson. For global scale invariance, an additional field -- dilaton -- is needed to make the theory phenomenologically viable. In the case of the Weyl symmetry, the dilaton is spurious and the theory reduces to a sub-class of one-field models. We study scalar, fermionic and gauge fields coupled nonminimally to gravity in the Einstein-Cartan formulation. We construct a wide class of models with nondynamical torsion whose gravitational spectra comprise only the massless graviton. Eliminating non-propagating degrees of freedom, we derive an equivalent theory in the metric formulation of gravity. It features contact interactions of a certain form between and among the matter and gauge currents. Right-handed neutrinos offer an elegant solution to two well established phenomena beyond the Standard Model (SM) - masses and oscillations of neutrinos, as well as the baryon asymmetry of the Universe. It is also a minimalistic solution since it requires only singlet Majorana fermions to be added to the SM particle content. If these fermions are nearly degenerate, the mass scale of right-handed neutrinos can be very low and accessible by the present and planned experiments. There are at least two well studied mechanisms of the low-scale leptogenesis: baryogenesis via oscillations and resonant leptogenesis. These two mechanisms were often considered separate, but they can in fact be understood as two different regimes of one and the same mechanism, described by a unique set of quantum kinetic equations. In this work we show, using a unified description based on quantum kinetic equations, that the parameter space of these two regimes of low-scale leptogenesis significantly overlap. We present a comprehensive study of the parameter space of the low-scale leptogenesis with the mass scale ranging from $0.1$ GeV to $\sim 10^6$ GeV. With the establishment and maturation of the experimental programs searching for new physics with sizeable couplings at the LHC, there is an increasing interest in the broader particle and astrophysics community for exploring the physics of light and feebly-interacting particles as a paradigm complementary to a New Physics sector at the TeV scale and beyond. FIPs 2020 has been the first workshop fully dedicated to the physics of feebly-interacting particles and was held virtually from 31 August to 4 September 2020. The workshop has gathered together experts from collider, beam dump, fixed target experiments, as well as from astrophysics, axions/ALPs searches, current/future neutrino experiments, and dark matter direct detection communities to discuss progress in experimental searches and underlying theory models for FIPs physics, and to enhance the cross-fertilisation across different fields. FIPs 2020 has been complemented by the topical workshop "Physics Beyond Colliders meets theory", held at CERN from 7 June to 9 June 2020. This document presents the summary of the talks presented at the workshops and the outcome of the subsequent discussions held immediately after. The $\nu$MSM -- an extension of the Standard Model by three relatively light singlet Majorana fermions $N_{1,2,3}$ -- allows for the generation of lepton asymmetry which is several orders of magnitude larger than the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe. The lepton asymmetry is produced in interactions of $N_{2,3}$ (with masses in the GeV region) at temperatures below the sphaleron freeze out $ T \lesssim 130$ GeV and can enhance the cosmological production of dark matter (DM) sterile neutrinos $N_1$ (with the mass of the keV scale) happening at $T \sim 200$ MeV due to active-sterile neutrino mixing. This asymmetry can be generated in freeze-in, freeze-out, or later in decays of heavy neutral leptons. In this work, we address the question of the magnitude of the late-time asymmetry (LTA) generated by the heavy neutral leptons $N_{2,3}$ during their freeze-in and freeze-out, leaving the decays for later work. We study how much of this asymmetry can survive down to the lower temperatures relevant for the sterile neutrino DM creation. We find that this LTA could result in the production of a sizeable fraction of dark matter. We also examine a role played by magnetic fields and the Abelian chiral anomaly in the generation of LTA, not accounted for in the previous studies. In this work we demonstrate that what was previously considered as different mechanisms of baryon asymmetry generation involving two right-handed Majorana neutrinos with masses far below the GUT scale -- leptogenesis via neutrino oscillations and resonant leptogenesis -- are actually united. We show that the observed baryon asymmetry can be generated for all experimentally allowed values of the right-handed neutrino masses above $M_N \gtrsim 100$ MeV. Leptogenesis is effective in a broad range of the parameters, including mass splitting between two right-handed neutrinos as big as $\Delta M_N/M_N \sim 0.1$, as well as mixing angles between the heavy and light neutrinos large enough to be accessible to planned intensity experiments or future colliders., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

It is well-known since the works of Utiyama and Kibble that the gravitational force can be obtained by gauging the Poincar\'e group, which puts gravity on the same footing as the Standard Model fields. The resulting theory -- Einstein-Cartan gravity -- inevitably contains four-fermion and scalar-fermion interactions that originate from torsion associated with spin degrees of freedom. We show that these interactions lead to a novel mechanism for producing singlet fermions in the Early Universe. These fermions can play the role of dark matter particles. The mechanism is operative in a large range of dark matter particle masses: from a few keV up to $\sim 10^8~$GeV. We discuss potential observational consequences of keV-scale dark matter produced this way, in particular for right-handed neutrinos. We study gravity coupled to scalar and fermion fields in the Einstein-Cartan framework. We discuss the most general form of the action that contains terms of mass dimension not bigger than four, leaving out only contributions quadratic in curvature. By resolving the theory explicitly for torsion, we arrive at an equivalent metric theory containing additional six-dimensional operators. This lays the groundwork for cosmological studies of the theory. We also perform the same analysis for a no-scale scenario in which the Planck mass is eliminated at the cost of adding an extra scalar degree of freedom. We study inflation driven by the Higgs field in the Einstein-Cartan formulation of gravity. In this theory, the presence of the Holst and Nieh-Yan terms with the Higgs field non-minimally coupled to them leads to three additional coupling constants. For a broad range of parameters, we find that inflation is both possible and consistent with observations. In most cases, the spectral index is given by $n_s=1-2/N_\star$ (with $N_\star$ the number of e-foldings) whereas the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ can vary between about $10^{-10}$ and $1$. Thus, there are scenarios of Higgs inflation in the Einstein-Cartan framework for which the detection of gravitational waves from inflation is possible in the near future. In certain limits, the known models of Higgs inflation in the metric and Palatini formulations of gravity are reproduced. We study quantum effects in Higgs inflation in the Palatini formulation of gravity, in which the metric and connection are treated as independent variables. We exploit the fact that the cutoff, above which perturbation theory breaks down, is higher than the scale of inflation. Unless new physics above the cutoff leads to unnaturally large corrections, we can directly connect low-energy physics and inflation. On the one hand, the lower bound on the top Yukawa coupling due to collider experiments leads to an upper bound on the non-minimal coupling of the Higgs field to gravity: $\xi \lesssim 10^8$. On the other hand, the Higgs potential can only support successful inflation if $\xi \gtrsim 10^6$. This leads to a fairly strict upper bound on the top Yukawa coupling of $0.925$ (defined in the $\overline{\text{MS}}$-scheme at the energy scale $173.2\,\text{GeV}$) and constrains the inflationary prediction for the tensor-to-scalar ratio. We propose a model for combining the Standard Model (SM) with gravity. It relies on a non-minimal coupling of the Higgs field to the Ricci scalar and on the Palatini formulation of gravity. Without introducing any new degrees of freedom in addition to those of the SM and the graviton, this scenario achieves two goals. First, it generates the electroweak symmetry breaking by a non-perturbative gravitational effect. In this way, it does not only address the hierarchy problem but opens up the possibility to calculate the Higgs mass. Second, the model incorporates inflation at energies below the onset of strong-coupling of the theory. Quantum field theories with exact but spontaneously broken conformal invariance have an intriguing feature: their vacuum energy (cosmological constant) is equal to zero. Up to now, the only known ultraviolet complete theories where conformal symmetry can be spontaneously broken were associated with supersymmetry (SUSY), with the most prominent example being the $\mathcal N$=4 SUSY Yang-Mills. In this Letter we show that the recently proposed conformal "fishnet" theory supports at the classical level a rich set of flat directions (moduli) along which conformal symmetry is spontaneously broken. We demonstrate that, at least perturbatively, some of these vacua survive in the full quantum theory (in the planar limit, at the leading order of $1/N_c$ expansion) without any fine tuning. The vacuum energy is equal to zero along these flat directions, providing the first non-SUSY example of a four-dimensional quantum field theory with "natural" breaking of conformal symmetry., Comment: Journal version

We study fermion number non-conservation (or chirality breaking) in Abelian gauge theories at finite temperature. We consider the presence of a chemical potential $\mu$ for the fermionic charge, and monitor its evolution with real-time classical lattice simulations. This method accounts for short-scale fluctuations not included in the usual effective magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) treatment. We observe a self-similar decay of the chemical potential, accompanied by an inverse cascade process in the gauge field that leads to a production of long-range helical magnetic fields. We also study the chiral charge dynamics in the presence of an external magnetic field $B$, and extract its decay rate $\Gamma_5 \equiv -{d\log \mu\over dt}$. We provide in this way a new determination of the gauge coupling and magnetic field dependence of the chiral rate, which exhibits a best fit scaling as $\Gamma_5 \propto e^{11/2}B^2$. We confirm numerically the fluctuation-dissipation relation between $\Gamma_5$ and $\Gamma_{\rm diff}$, the Chern-Simons diffusion rate, which was obtained in a previous study. Remarkably, even though we are outside the MHD range of validity, the dynamics observed are in qualitative agreement with MHD predictions. The magnitude of the chiral/diffusion rate is however a factor $\sim 10$ times larger than expected in MHD, signaling that we are in reality exploring a different regime accounting for short scale fluctuations. This discrepancy calls for a revision of the implications of fermion number and chirality non-conservation in finite temperature Abelian gauge theories, though not definite conclusion can be made at this point until hard-thermal-loops (HTL) are included in the lattice simulations., Comment: 32 pages, 11 figures. Scale invariance supplemented by the requirement of the absence of new heavy particles may play an important role in addressing the hierarchy problem. There exist renormalisation schemes that explicitly preserve the scale invariance of a theory at the quantum level. Imposing a scale invariant renormalisation breaks renormalisability and induces new non-trivial operators in the theory. In this work, we study the effects of such scale invariant renormalisation procedures. On the one hand, an explicitly quantum scale invariant theory can emerge from the scale invariant renormalisation of a scale invariant Lagrangian. On the other hand, we show how a quantum scale invariant theory can equally emerge from a Lagrangian visibly breaking scale invariance renormalised with scale dependent renormalisation (such as the traditional MS-bar scheme). This document summarizes the conclusions of the Neutrino Town Meeting held at CERN in October 2018 to review the neutrino field at large with the aim of defining a strategy for accelerator-based neutrino physics in Europe. The importance of the field across its many complementary components is stressed. Recommendations are presented regarding the accelerator based neutrino physics, pertinent to the European Strategy for Particle Physics. The Standard Model accompanied with two right-handed neutrinos with the masses below the weak scale can explain the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe. Moreover, this model is at least partially testable in the forthcoming experiments such as NA62, SHiP, and MATHUSLA. The remarkable progress in understanding of various rates entering the kinetic equations describing the asymmetry generation along with considerable improvements of the numerical procedures allow us to perform a comprehensive analysis of the parameter space of the model. We find that the region of parameters leading to the successful baryogenesis is notably larger than it was previously obtained. Our results are presented in a way that they can be readily used for studies of sensitivity of various experiments searching for the right-handed neutrinos responsible for the baryon asymmetry of the Universe. Combining the quantum scale invariance with the absence of new degrees of freedom above the electroweak scale leads to stability of the latter against perturbative quantum corrections. Nevertheless, the hierarchy between the weak and the Planck scales remains unexplained. We argue that this hierarchy can be generated by a non-perturbative effect relating the low energy and the Planck-scale physics. The effect is manifested in the existence of an instanton configuration contributing to the vacuum expectation value of the Higgs field. We analyze such configurations in several toy models and in a phenomenologically viable theory encompassing the Standard Model and General Relativity in a scale-invariant way. If the mass of the Higgs boson is put to zero, the classical Lagrangian of the Standard Model (SM) becomes conformally invariant (CI). Taking into account quantum non-perturbative QCD effects violating CI leads to electroweak symmetry breaking with the scale $v \sim \Lambda_{\rm QCD}\sim 100$ MeV which is three orders of magnitude less than it is observed experimentally. Depending on the mass of the top quark, the radiative corrections may lead to another minimum of the effective potential for the Higgs field with $v \gtrsim M_P$, where $M_P$ is the Planck mass, at least $16$ orders of magnitude more than it is observed. We explore yet another source of CI breaking associated with gravity. We suggest a non-perturbative mechanism that can reproduce the observed hierarchy between the Fermi and the Planck scales, by constructing an instanton configuration contributing to the vacuum expectation value of the Higgs field. We discuss the non-conservation of fermion number (or chirality breaking, depending on the fermionic charge assignment) in Abelian gauge theories at finite temperature. We study different mechanisms of fermionic charge disappearance in the high temperature plasma, using both analytical estimates and real-time classical lattice numerical simulations. We investigate the random walk of the Chern-Simons number $Q \propto \int d^4x F_{\mu\nu}{\tilde F}^{\mu\nu}$, and show that it has a diffusive behaviour in the presence of an external magnetic field $B$. This indicates that the mechanism for fermionic number non-conservation for $B \neq 0$, is due to fluctuations of the gauge fields, similarly as in the case of non-Abelian gauge theories. We determine numerically, with lattice simulations, the rate $\Gamma$ of chirality non-conservation associated with this diffusion. We find the rate to be a factor $\mathcal{O}(10)$ larger compared to previous theoretical estimates, what calls for a revision of the implications of Abelian fermion number and chirality non-conservation for baryogenesis, magnetogenesis and chiral symmetry evolution. Real time evolution of classical gauge fields is relevant for a number of applications in particle physics and cosmology, ranging from the early Universe to dynamics of quark-gluon plasma. We present a lattice formulation of the interaction between a $shift$-symmetric field and some $U(1)$ gauge sector, $a(x)\tilde{F}_{\mu\nu}F^{\mu\nu}$, reproducing the continuum limit to order $\mathcal{O}(dx_\mu^2)$ and obeying the following properties: (i) the system is gauge invariant and (ii) shift symmetry is exact on the lattice. For this end we construct a definition of the {\it topological number density} $Q = \tilde{F}_{\mu\nu}F^{\mu\nu}$ that admits a lattice total derivative representation $Q = \Delta_\mu^+ K^\mu$, reproducing to order $\mathcal{O}(dx_\mu^2)$ the continuum expression $Q = \partial_\mu K^\mu \propto \vec E \cdot \vec B$. If we consider a homogeneous field $a(x) = a(t)$, the system can be mapped into an Abelian gauge theory with Hamiltonian containing a Chern-Simons term for the gauge fields. This allow us to study in an accompanying paper the real time dynamics of fermion number non-conservation (or chirality breaking) in Abelian gauge theories at finite temperature. When $a(x) = a(\vec x,t)$ is inhomogeneous, the set of lattice equations of motion do not admit however a simple explicit local solution (while preserving an $\mathcal{O}(dx_\mu^2)$ accuracy). The existence of baryon asymmetry and dark matter in the Universe may be related to CP-violating reactions of three heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) with masses well below the Fermi scale. The dynamical description of the lepton asymmetry generation, which is the key ingredient of baryogenesis and of dark matter production, is quite complicated due to the presence of many different relaxation time scales and the necessity to include quantum-mechanical coherent effects in HNL oscillations. We propose an interpretation of the gauge coupling unification scale which is not related to any new particle threshold. We revisit Grand Unified Theories and show that it is possible to completely eliminate the scalar as well as vector leptoquarks from the particle physics spectrum. As a consequence, in our approach the gauge hierarchy problem is put on different grounds, and the proton may be absolutely stable. In order to achieve that, we employ a number of nonlinear gauge-invariant constraints which only affect the superheavy degrees of freedom. We illustrate our considerations in a model based on the SU(5) group, with the generalization to other groups being straightforward. We argue that electromagnetic decays of energetic unflavoured neutral mesons, notably $\eta$, mis-identified as single photons due to granularity of the electromagnetic calorimeter might create bump-like features in the diphoton invariant mass spectrum at different energies, including 750 GeV. In the present paper, we revisit gravitational theories which are invariant under TDiffs -- transverse (volume preserving) diffeomorphisms and global scale transformations. It is known that these theories can be rewritten in an equivalent diffeomorphism-invariant form with an action including an integration constant (cosmological constant for the particular case of non-scale-invariant unimodular gravity). The presence of this integration constant, in general, breaks explicitly scale invariance and induces a runaway potential for the (otherwise massless) dilaton, associated with the determinant of the metric tensor. We show, however, that if the metric carries mass dimension $\left[\text{GeV}\right]^{-2}$, the scale invariance of the system is preserved, unlike the situation in theories in which the metric has mass dimension different from $-2$. The dilaton remains massless and couples to other fields only through derivatives, without any conflict with observations. We observe that one can define a specific limit for fields and their derivatives (in particular, the dilaton goes to zero, potentially related to the small distance domain of the theory) in which the only singular terms in the action correspond to the Higgs mass and the cosmological constant. We speculate that the self-consistency of the theory may require the regularity of the action, leading to the absence of the bare Higgs mass and cosmological constant, whereas their small finite values may be generated by nonperturbative effects., Comment: published version

We construct a 2+1 dimensional model that sustains superconductivity at all temperatures. This is achieved by introducing a Chern Simons mixing term between two Abelian gauge fields A and Z. The superfluid is described by a complex scalar charged under Z, whereas a sufficiently strong magnetic field of A forces the superconducting condensate to form at all temperatures. In fact, at finite temperature, the theory exhibits Berezinsky-Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition due to proliferation of topological vortices admitted by our construction. However, the critical temperature is proportional to the magnetic field of A, and thus, the phase transition can be postponed to high temperatures by increasing the strength of the magnetic field. We find a new type of topological vortex solution in the $U(1)_Z \times U(1)_A$ Chern Simons gauge theory in the presence of a $U(1)_A$ magnetic field background. In this theory $U(1)_Z$ is broken spontaneously by the $U(1)_A$ magnetic field. These vortices exhibit long range interactions as they are charged under the unbroken $U(1)_A$. They deplete the $U(1)_A$ magnetic field near their core and also break both $C$ and $P$ symmetries. Understanding the nature of these vortices sheds light on the ground state structure of the superconductivity studied in [1]. We also study the Berezinsky-Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition in this class of theories and point out that superconductivity can be achieved at high temperatures by increasing the $U(1)_A$ magnetic field., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

We report on a new topological vortex solution in U(1)$\times$U(1) Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory. The existence of the vortex is envisaged by analytical means, and a numerical solution is obtained by integrating the equations of motion. These vortices have a long-range force because one of the U(1)s remains unbroken in the infrared, which is guarded by the Coleman-Hill theorem. The sum of the winding numbers of an ensemble of vortices has to vanish; otherwise the system would have a logarithmically divergent energy. In turn, these vortices exhibit classical confinement. We investigate the rich parameter space of the solutions, and show that one recovers the Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen, U(1) Maxwell-Chern-Simons, U(1) pure Chern-Simons and global vortices as various limiting cases. Unlike these limiting cases, the higher winding solutions of our vortices carry non-integer charges under the broken U(1). This paper describes the physics case for a new fixed target facility at CERN SPS. The SHiP (Search for Hidden Particles) experiment is intended to hunt for new physics in the largely unexplored domain of very weakly interacting particles with masses below the Fermi scale, inaccessible to the LHC experiments, and to study tau neutrino physics. The same proton beam setup can be used later to look for decays of tau-leptons with lepton flavour number non-conservation, $\tau\to 3\mu$ and to search for weakly-interacting sub-GeV dark matter candidates. We discuss the evidence for physics beyond the Standard Model and describe interactions between new particles and four different portals - scalars, vectors, fermions or axion-like particles. We discuss motivations for different models, manifesting themselves via these interactions, and how they can be probed with the SHiP experiment and present several case studies. The prospects to search for relatively light SUSY and composite particles at SHiP are also discussed. We demonstrate that the SHiP experiment has a unique potential to discover new physics and can directly probe a number of solutions of beyond the Standard Model puzzles, such as neutrino masses, baryon asymmetry of the Universe, dark matter, and inflation, Comment: 200 pages + appendices/references

The measurements of the Higgs mass and top Yukawa coupling indicate that we live in a very special Universe, at the edge of the absolute stability of the electroweak vacuum. If fully stable, the Standard Model (SM) can be extended all the way up to the inflationary scale and the Higgs field, non-minimally coupled to gravity with strength $\xi$, can be responsible for inflation. We show that the successful Higgs inflation scenario can also take place if the SM vacuum is not absolutely stable. This conclusion is based on two effects that were overlooked previously. The first one is associated with the effective renormalization of the SM couplings at the energy scale $M_P/\xi$, where $M_P$ is the Planck scale. In the cosmological context, for the Standard Model to be valid up to the scale of inflation, the top quark Yukawa coupling $y_t$ should not exceed the critical value $y_t^{crit}$, coinciding with good precision (about 0.02%) with the requirement of the stability of the electroweak vacuum. So, the exact measurements of $y_t$ may give an insight on the possible existence and the energy scale of new physics above 100 GeV, which is extremely sensitive to $y_t$. We overview the most recent theoretical computations of $y_t^{crit}$ and the experimental measurements of $y_t$. Within the theoretical and experimental uncertainties in $y_t$ the required scale of new physics varies from $10^7$ GeV to the Planck scale, urging for precise determination of the top quark Yukawa coupling., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures. The Higgs-Dilaton model is able to produce an early inflationary expansion followed by a dark energy dominated era responsible for the late time acceleration of the Universe. At tree level, the model predicts a small tensor-to-scalar ratio ($0.0021\leq r \leq 0.0034$), a tiny negative running of the spectral tilt ($-0.00057 \leq dn_s/d\ln k \leq -0.00034$) and a nontrivial consistency relation between the spectral tilt of scalar perturbations and the dark energy equation of state, which turns out to be close to a cosmological constant ($0 \leq 1+w_{DE} \leq 0.014$). We reconsider the validity of these predictions in the vicinity of the critical value of the Higgs self-coupling giving rise to an inflection point in the inflationary potential. The value of the inflationary observables in this case strongly depends on the parameters of the model. The tensor-to-scalar ratio can be large [$r\sim {\cal O}(0.1)$] and notably exceed its tree-level value. Higgs inflation can occur if the Standard Model (SM) is a self-consistent effective field theory up to inflationary scale. This leads to a lower bound on the Higgs boson mass, $M_h \geq M_{\text{crit}}$. If $M_h$ is more than a few hundreds of MeV above the critical value, the Higgs inflation predicts the universal values of inflationary indexes, $r\simeq 0.003$ and $n_s\simeq 0.97$, independently on the Standard Model parameters. We show that in the vicinity of the critical point $M_{\text{crit}}$ the inflationary indexes acquire an essential dependence on the mass of the top quark $m_t$ and $M_h$. The discovery of 126 GeV Higgs boson and observations of no signs of new physics at the LHC implies that the Standard Model of elementary particles is a self-consistent weakly-coupled effective field theory all the way up to the Planck scale without the addition of any new particles. The diversity of structures in the Universe (from the smallest galaxies to the largest superclusters) has formed under the pull of gravity from the tiny primordial perturbations that we see imprinted in the cosmic microwave background. A quantitative description of this process would require description of motion of zillions of dark matter particles. This impossible task is usually circumvented by coarse-graining the problem: one either considers a Newtonian dynamics of "particles" with macroscopically large masses or approximates the dark matter distribution with a continuous density field. There is no closed system of equations for the evolution of the matter density field alone and instead it should still be discretized at each timestep. In this work we describe a method of solving the full 6-dimensional Vlasov-Poisson equation via a system of auxiliary Schroedinger-like equations. The complexity of the problem gets shifted into the choice of the number and shape of the initial wavefunctions that should only be specified at the beginning of the computation (we stress that these wavefunctions have nothing to do with quantum nature of the actual dark matter particles). We discuss different prescriptions to generate the initial wave functions from the initial conditions and demonstrate the validity of the technique on two simple test cases. This new simulation algorithm can in principle be used on an arbitrary distribution function, enabling the simulation of warm and hot dark matter structure formation scenarios., Comment: 26 pages, 9 figures. The majority of renormalizable field theories possessing the scale invariance at the classical level exhibits the trace anomaly once quantum corrections are taken into account. This leads to the breaking of scale and conformal invariance. At the same time any realistic theory must contain gravity and is thus non-renormalizable. We show that discarding the renormalizability it is possible to construct viable models allowing to preserve the scale invariance at the quantum level. We present explicit one-loop computations for two toy models to demonstrate the main idea of the approach. Constructing the renormalized energy momentum tensor we show that it is traceless, meaning that the conformal invariance is also preserved., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures

The Higgs-Dilaton cosmological model is able to describe simultaneously an inflationary expansion in the early Universe and a dark energy dominated stage responsible for the present day acceleration. It also leads to a non-trivial relation between the spectral tilt of scalar perturbations n_s and the dark energy equation of state \omega. We study the self-consistency of this model from an effective field theory point of view. Taking into account the influence of the dynamical background fields, we determine the effective cut-off of the theory, which turns out to be parametrically larger than all the relevant energy scales from inflation to the present epoch. We finally formulate the set of assumptions needed to estimate the amplitude of the quantum corrections in a systematic way and show that the connection between n_s and \omega remains unaltered if these assumptions are satisfied., Comment: typos corrected, references and appendix added, published version

In this note we show that in a scale invariant relativistic field theory fields of canonical dimensionality are not necessarily free provided the scale invariance is spontaneously broken.

Recent analyses of cosmological data suggest the presence of an extra relativistic component beyond the Standard Model content. The Higgs-Dilaton cosmological model predicts the existence of a massless particle -the dilaton- associated with the spontaneous symmetry breaking of scale invariance and undetectable by any accelerator experiment. Its ultrarelativistic character makes it a suitable candidate for contributing to the effective number of light degrees of freedom in the Universe. In this Letter we analyze the dilaton production at the (p)reheating stage right after inflation and conclude that no extra relativistic degrees of freedom beyond those already present in the Standard Model are expected within the simplest Higgs-Dilaton scenario.
