The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly impacted global economies and healthcare systems, revealing critical vulnerabilities in both. In response, our study introduces a groundbreaking method for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 cDNA, leveraging Luminescence resonance energy transfer (LRET) between upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to achieve an unprecedented detection limit of 242 femtomolar (fM). This innovative sensing platform utilizes UCNPs conjugated with one primer and AuNPs with another, targeting the 5' and 3' ends of the SARS-CoV-2 cDNA, respectively, enabling precise differentiation of mismatched DNA sequences and significantly enhancing detection specificity. Through rigorous experimental analysis, we established a quenching efficiency range from 10.4\% to 73.6\%, with an optimal midpoint of 42\%, thereby demonstrating the superior sensitivity of our method. By comparing the quenching efficiency of mismatched DNAs to the target DNA, we identified an optimal DNA:UCNP:AuNP ratio that ensures accurate detection. Our comparative analysis with existing SARS-CoV-2 detection methods revealed that our approach not only provides a lower detection limit but also offers higher specificity and potential for rapid, on-site testing. This study demonstrates the superior sensitivity and specificity of using UCNPs and AuNPs for SARS-CoV-2 cDNA detection, offering a significant advancement in rapid, accessible diagnostic technologies. We present the characterization of the photonic waveguide resonator using confocal laser scanning microscopy imaging method. Free space TEM$_{00}$ laser mode is coupled into quasi-TE$_{0}$ waveguide mode using confocal microscopy via a diffractive grating coupler and vice versa. Our work includes the design, fabrication, and experimental characterization of a silicon nitride racetrack-shaped resonator of length ~ 165 um. We illustrate clear evidence of resonance excitation from the confocal microscope image and demonstrate loaded Q-factor and finesse ~ 8.2 \pm 0.17 * 10^4 and ~ 180 \pm 3.5, respectively. We further demonstrate its one application in air density sensing by measuring the resonance wavelength shifts with variation in environment air pressure. Our work impacts spectroscopy, imaging, and sensing applications of single or ensemble atoms or molecules coupled to photonic devices. Devices based on photonic integrated circuits play a crucial role in the development of low-cost, high-performance, industry-scale manufacturable sensors. We report the design, fabrication, and application of a silicon nitride waveguide-based integrated photonic sensor in Young's interferometer configuration combined with Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (CMOS) imaging detection. We use a finite-difference time-domain method to analyze the performance of the sensor device and optimize the sensitivity of the fundamental transverse-electric (TE) mode. We develop a low-cost fabrication method for the photonic sensor chip, using photolithography-compatible dimensions, and produce the sensing region with wet-etching of silicon dioxide. We demonstrate the sensor's functioning by measuring the optical phase shift with glucose concentration in an aqueous solution. We obtain consistent interference patterns with fringe visibility exceeding 0.75 and measure the phase differences for glucose concentrations in the 10 ug/ml order, corresponding to the order of 10^7 molecules in the sensing volume. We envision extending this work to functionalized surface sensors based on molecular binding. The biomechanical properties of cells and tissues play an important role in our fundamental understanding of the structures and functions of biological systems at both the cellular and subcellular levels. Recently, Brillouin microscopy, which offers a label-free spectroscopic means of assessing viscoelastic properties in vivo, has emerged as a powerful way to interrogate those properties on a microscopic level in living tissues. However, susceptibility to photo-damage and photo-bleaching, particularly when high-intensity laser beams are used to induce Brillouin scattering, poses a significant challenge. This article introduces a transformative approach designed to mitigate photo-damage in biological and biomedical studies, enabling non-destructive, label-free assessments of mechanical properties in live biological samples. By leveraging quantum-light-enhanced stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) imaging contrast, the signal-to-noise ratio is significantly elevated, thereby increasing sample viability and extending interrogation times without compromising the integrity of living samples. The tangible impact of this novel methodology is evidenced by a notable three-fold increase in sample viability observed after subjecting the samples to three hours of continuous squeezed-light illumination, surpassing the traditional coherent light-based approaches. The quantum-enhanced SBS imaging holds promise across diverse fields, such as cancer biology and neuroscience where preserving sample vitality is of paramount significance. Strong quantum-correlated sources are essential but delicate resources for quantum information science and engineering protocols. Decoherence and loss are the two main disruptive processes that lead to the loss of nonclassical behavior in quantum correlations. In quantum systems, scattering can contribute to both decoherence and loss. In this work, we present an experimental scheme capable of significantly mitigating the adverse impact of scattering in quantum systems. Our quantum system is composed of a two-mode squeezed light generated with the four-wave mixing process in hot rubidium vapor, and a scatterer is introduced to one of the two modes. An integrating sphere is then placed after the scatterer to recollect the scattered photons. We use mutual information between the two modes as the measure of quantum correlations, and demonstrate a 47.5% mutual information recovery from scattering, despite an enormous photon loss of greater than 85%. Our scheme is a pioneering step towards recovering quantum correlations from disruptive random processes, thus has the potential to bridge the gap between proof-of-principle demonstrations and practical real-world deployments of quantum protocols., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

The development and application of upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) have garnered significant attention due to their unique optical properties and potential uses in bioimaging, drug delivery, and solar cells. However, the hydrophobic nature of UCNPs presents challenges in their synthesis and application, particularly in aqueous environments. We provide an overview of UCNPs, their synthesis challenges, and the importance of surface modification. Furthermore, we discuss the properties of \textit{LiYF_{4}:Yb, Er, Tm} UCNPs synthesized using novel 2,2-[ethylenebis(oxy)] bisacetic acid (EBAA) method and their versatile applications. Notably, the first Dynamic Light Scattering measurement on 05/22/2022 showed a size of 11.39 nm, and after 348 days on 04/05/2023, the same batch maintained a size of 13.8 nm, indicating excellent stability and no particle agglomeration over this extended period. This remarkable stability underscores the potential of UCNPs synthesized with the EBAA method for long-term applications. Finally, we compare the EBAA method with other surface modification techniques, exploring challenges and future perspectives for the use of hydrophilic UCNPs in various applications. Non-Hermitian topological phenomena have gained much interest among physicists in recent years. In this paper, we expound on the physics of dissipatively coupled Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) lattices, specifically in systems with bosonic and electrical constituents. In the context of electrical circuits, we demonstrate that a series of resistively coupled LCR circuits mimics the topology of a dissipatively coupled SSH model. In addition, we foreground a scheme to construct dissipatively coupled SSH lattices involving a set of non-interacting bosonic oscillators weakly coupled to engineered reservoirs of modes possessing substantially small lifetimes when compared to other system timescales. Further, by activating the coherent coupling between bosonic oscillators, we elucidate the emergence of non-reciprocal dissipative coupling which can be controlled by the phase of the coherent interaction strength precipitating in phase-dependent topological transitions and skin effect. Atoms falling into a black hole (BH) through a cavity are shown to enable coherent amplification of light quanta powered by the BH gravitational vacuum energy. This process can harness the BH energy towards useful purposes, such as propelling a spaceship trapped by the BH. The process can occur via transient amplification of a signal field by falling atoms that are partly excited by Hawking radiation reflected by an orbiting mirror. In the steady-state regime of thermally equilibrated atoms that weakly couple to the field, this amplifier constitutes a BH-powered quantum heat engine. The envisaged effects substantiate the thermodynamic approach to BH acceleration radiation.

Artificial intelligence has recently been widely used in computational imaging. The deep neural network (DNN) improves the signal-to-noise ratio of the retrieved images, whose quality is otherwise corrupted due to the low sampling ratio or noisy environments. This work proposes a new computational imaging scheme based on the sequence transduction mechanism with the transformer network. The simulation database assists the network in achieving signal translation ability. The experimental single-pixel detector's signal will be `translated' into a 2D image in an end-to-end manner. High-quality images with no background noise can be retrieved at a sampling ratio as low as 2%. The illumination patterns can be either well-designed speckle patterns for sub-Nyquist imaging or random speckle patterns. Moreover, our method is robust to noise interference. We show that stimulated scattering of an isolated system of N Bose particles with initially broad energy distribution can yield condensation of particles into excited collective state in which most of the bosons occupy one or several modes. During condensation, the total particle number and energy are conserved, while entropy of the system grows. Onset of condensation occurs at a critical particle occupation number when spectrum narrowing due to stimulated processes overcomes spectrum broadening due to diffusion. Optical imaging through scattering media is a long-standing challenge. Although many approaches have been developed to focus light or image objects through scattering media, they are either invasive, restricted to stationary or slowly-moving media, or require high-resolution cameras and complex algorithms to retrieve the images. Here we introduce a computational imaging technique that can overcome these restrictions by exploiting spatial-temporal encoded patterns (STEP). We present non-invasive imaging through scattering media with a single-pixel photodetector. We show that the method is insensitive to the motions of media. We further demonstrate that our image reconstruction algorithm is much more efficient than correlation-based algorithms for single-pixel imaging, which may allow fast imaging in currently unreachable scenarios., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

In this paper, we present a method for speckle pattern design using deep learning. The speckle patterns possess unique features after experiencing convolutions in Speckle-Net, our well-designed framework for speckle pattern generation. We then apply our method to the computational ghost imaging system. The standard deep learning-assisted ghost imaging methods use the network to recognize the reconstructed objects or imaging algorithms. In contrast, this innovative application optimizes the illuminating speckle patterns via Speckle-Net with specific sampling ratios. Our method, therefore, outperforms the other techniques for ghost imaging, particularly its ability to retrieve high-quality images with extremely low sampling ratios. It opens a new route towards nontrivial speckle generation by referring to a standard loss function on specified objectives with the modified deep neural network. In a viral pandemic, a few important tests are required for successful containment of the virus and reduction in severity of the infection. Among those tests, a test for the neutralizing ability of an antibody is crucial for assessment of population immunity gained through vaccination, and to test therapeutic value of antibodies made to counter the infections. Here, we report a sensitive technique to detect the relative neutralizing strength of various antibodies against the SARS-CoV-2 virus. We used bright, photostable, background-free, fluorescent upconversion nanoparticles conjugated with SARS-CoV-2 receptor binding domain as a phantom virion. A glass bottom plate coated with angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE-2) protein imitates the target cells. When no neutralizing IgG antibody was present in the sample, the particles would bind to the ACE-2 with high affinity. In contrast, a neutralizing antibody can prevent particle attachment to the ACE-2-coated substrate. A prototype system consisting of a custom-made confocal microscope was used to quantify particle attachment to the substrate. The sensitivity of this assay can reach 4.0 ng/ml and the dynamic range is from 1.0 ng/ml to 3.2 {\mu}g/ml. This is to be compared to 19 ng/ml sensitivity of commercially available kits.

Spontaneous emission from individual atoms in vapor lasts nanoseconds, if not microseconds, and beatings in this emission involve only directly excited energy sublevels. In contrast, the superfluorescent emissions burst on a much-reduced timescale and their beatings involve both directly and indirectly excited energy sublevels. In this work, picosecond and femtosecond superfluorescent beatings are observed from a dense cesium atomic vapor. Cesium atoms are excited by 60-femtosecond long, 800 nm laser pulses via two-photon processes into their coherent superpositions of the ground 6S and excited 8S states. As a part of the transient four wave mixing process, the yoked superfluorescent blue light at lower transitions of 6S - 7P are recorded and studied. Delayed buildup time of this blue light is measured as a function of the input laser beam power using a high-resolution 2 ps streak camera. The power dependent buildup delay time is consistently doubled as the vapor temperature is lowered to cut the number of atoms by half. At low power and density, a beating with a period of 100 picoseconds representing the ground state splitting is observed. The autocorrelation measurements of the generated blue light exhibit a beating with a quasi-period of 230 fs corresponding to the splitting of the 7P level primarily at lower input laser power. Understanding and, eventually, controlling the intriguing nature of superfluorescent beatings may permit a rapid quantum operation free from the rather slow spontaneous emission processes from atoms and molecules., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Synthesizing many-body interaction Hamiltonian is a central task in quantum simulation. However, it is challenging to synthesize interactions including more than two spins. Borrowing tools from quantum optics, we synthesize five-body spin-exchange interaction in a superconducting quantum circuit by simultaneously exciting four independent qubits with time-energy correlated photon quadruples generated from a qudit. During the dynamic evolution of the five-body interaction, a Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state is generated in a single step with fidelity estimated to be $0.685$. We compare the influence of noise on the three-, four- and five-body interaction as a step toward answering the question on the quantum origin of chiral molecules. We also demonstrate a many-body Mach-Zehnder interferometer which potentially has a Heisenberg-limit sensitivity. We present a framework for computational ghost imaging based on deep learning and customized pink noise speckle patterns. The deep neural network in this work, which can learn the sensing model and enhance image reconstruction quality, is trained merely by simulation. To demonstrate the sub-Nyquist level in our work, the conventional computational ghost imaging results, reconstructed imaging results using white noise and pink noise via deep learning are compared under multiple sampling rates at different noise conditions. We show that the proposed scheme can provide high-quality images with a sampling rate of 0.8% even when the object is outside the training dataset, and it is robust to noisy environments. We develop an ultrafast frequency-resolved Raman spectroscopy with entangled photons for polyatomic molecules in condensed phases, to probe the electronic and vibrational coherences. Using quantum correlation between the photons, the signal shows the capability of both temporal and spectral resolutions that are not accessible by either classical pulses or the fields without entanglement. We develop a microscopic theory for this Raman spectroscopy, revealing the electronic coherence dynamics which often shows a rapid decay within $\sim$50fs. The spectrum of atomic hydrogen has long been viewed as a Rosetta stone that bears the key to decode the writings of quantum mechanics in a vast variety of physical, chemical, and biological systems. Here, we show that, in addition to its role as a basic model of quantum mechanics, the hydrogen atom provides a fundamental building block of quantum information. Through its electron and nuclear spin degrees of freedom, the hydrogen atom is shown to lend a physically meaningful frame and a suitable Hilbert space for bipartite entanglement, whose two-qubit concurrence and quantum coherence can be expressed in terms of the fundamental physical constants -- the Planck and Boltzmann constants, electron and proton masses, the fine-structure constant, as well as the Bohr radius and the Bohr magneton. The intrinsic, natural entanglement that the hyperfine-structure (HFS) states of the H atom store at low temperatures rapidly decreases with a growth in temperature, vanishing above a $\tau_c$ $\approx$ 5.35 $\mu$eV threshold. An external magnetic field, however, can overcome this thermal loss of HFS entanglement. As one of the central findings of this work, we show that an external magnetic field can induce and sustain an HFS entanglement, against all the odds of thermal effects, at temperatures well above the $\tau_c$ threshold, thus enabling magnetic-field-assisted entanglement engineering in low-temperature gases and solids., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We present a novel method to synthesize non-trivial speckles that can enable superresolving second-order correlation imaging. The speckles acquire a unique anti-correlation in the spatial intensity fluctuation by introducing the blue noise spectrum to the input light fields through amplitude modulation. Illuminating objects with the blue noise speckle patterns can lead to a sub-diffraction limit imaging system with a resolution more than three times higher than first-order imaging, which is comparable to the resolving power of ninth order correlation imaging with thermal light. Our method opens a new route towards non-trivial speckle generation by tailoring amplitudes of the input light fields and provides a versatile scheme for constructing superresolving imaging and microscopy systems without invoking complicated higher-order correlations., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

We propose and demonstrate a method for measuring the time evolution of the off-diagonal elements $\rho_{n,n+k}(t)$ of the reduced density matrix obtained from the quantum theory of the laser. The decay rates of the off-diagonal matrix element $\rho_{n,n+k}(t)$ (k=2,3) are measured for the first time and compared with that of $\rho_{n,n+1}(t)$, which corresponds to the linewidth of the laser. The experimental results agree with the quantum theory of the laser.

We develop and experimentally demonstrate an imaging method based on the pink noise pattern in the computational ghost imaging (CGI) system, which has a strong ability to photograph moving objects. To examine its unique ability and scope of application, the object oscillates with variable amplitude in horizontal axis, and the result via commonly used white noise are also measured as a comparison. We show that our method can image the object when the white noise method fails. In addition, our method uses less number of patterns, and enhances the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) to a great extent.

Computational ghost imaging generally requires a large number of pattern illumination to obtain a high-quality image. The colored noise speckle pattern was recently proposed to substitute the white noise pattern in a variety of noisy environments and gave a significant signal-to-noise ratio enhancement even with a limited number of patterns. We propose and experimentally demonstrate here an orthonormalization approach based on the colored noise patterns to achieve sub-Nyquist computational ghost imaging. We tested the reconstructed image in quality indicators such as the contrast-to-noise ratio, the mean square error, the peak signal to noise ratio, and the correlation coefficient. We develop a method based on the cross-spectrum of an intensity-modulated CW laser, which can extract a signal from an extremely noisy environment and image objects hidden in turbid media. We theoretically analyzed our scheme and performed the experiment by scanning the object placed in between two ground glass diffusers. The image of the object is retrieved by collecting the amplitudes at the modulation frequency of all the cross-spectra. We propose a computational ghost imaging scheme using customized pink noise speckle pattern illumination. By modulating the spatial frequency amplitude of the speckles, we generate speckle patterns with a significant positive spatial correlation. We experimentally reconstruct images using our synthesized speckle patterns in the presence of a variety of noise sources and pattern distortion and shown it is robust to noise interference. The results are compared with the use of standard white noise speckle patterns. We show that our method gives good image qualities under different noise interference situations while the traditional way fails. Absorption measurement is an exceptionally versatile tool for many applications in science and engineering. For absorption measurements using laser beams of light, the sensitivity is theoretically limited by the shot noise due to the fundamental Poisson distribution of photon number in laser radiation. In practice, the shot-noise limit can only be achieved when all other sources of noise are eliminated. \textcolor{black}{Here, we use seeded squeezed light to demonstrate that direct absorption measurement can be performed with sensitivity beyond the shot-noise limit. We present a practically realizable scheme, where intensity squeezed beams are generated by a seeded four-wave mixing process in an atomic rubidium vapor cell. More than 1.2~dB quantum advantage for the measurement sensitivity is obtained at faint absorption levels ($\leq 10\%$). We also present a detailed theoretical analysis to show that the observed quantum advantage when corrected for optical loss would be equivalent to 3~dB. Our experiment demonstrates a direct sub-shot-noise measurement of absorption that requires neither homodyne/lock-in nor logic coincidence detection schemes. The cavity mediated spin current between two ferrite samples has been reported by Bai et. al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 118, 217201 (2017)]. This experiment was done in the linear regime of the interaction in the presence of external drive. In the current paper we develop a theory for the spin current in the nonlinear domain where the external drive is strong so that one needs to include the Kerr nonlinearity of the ferrite materials. In this manner the nonlinear polaritons are created and one can reach both bistable and multistable behavior of the spin current. The system is driven into a far from equilibrium steady state which is determined by the details of driving field and various interactions. We present a variety of steady state results for the spin current. A spectroscopic detection of the nonlinear spin current is developed, revealing the key properties of the nonlinear polaritons. The transmission of a weak probe is used to obtain quantitative information on the multistable behavior of the spin current. The results and methods that we present are quite generic and can be used in many other contexts where cavities are used to transfer information from one system to another, e.g., two different molecular systems., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

Here we report the first observation of simultaneous excitation of two noninteracting atoms by a pair of time-frequency correlated photons in a superconducting circuit. The strong coupling regime of this process enables the synthesis of a three-body interaction Hamiltonian, which allows the generation of the tripartite Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state in a single step with a fidelity as high as 0.95. We further demonstrate the quantum Zeno effect of inhibiting the simultaneous two-atom excitation by continuously measuring whether the first photon is emitted. We report an experiment to test quantum interference, entanglement and nonlocality using two dissimilar photon sources, the Sun and a semiconductor quantum dot on the Earth, which are separated by 150 million kilometers. By making the otherwise vastly distinct photons indistinguishable all degrees of freedom, we observe time-resolved two-photon quantum interference with a raw visibility of 0.796(17), well above the 0.5 classical limit, providing the first evidence of quantum nature of thermal light. Further, using the photons with no common history, we demonstrate post-selected two-photon entanglement with a state fidelity of 0.826(24), and a violation of Bell's inequality by 2.20(6). We propose a scheme to entangle two magnon modes via Kerr nonlinear effect when driving the systems far-from-equilibrium. We consider two macroscopic yttrium iron garnets (YIGs) interacting with a single-mode microcavity through the magnetic dipole coupling. The Kittel mode describing the collective excitations of large number of spins are excited through driving cavity with a strong microwave field. We demonstrate how the Kerr nonlineraity creates the entangled quantum states between the two macroscopic ferromagnetic samples, when the microcavity is strongly driven by a blue-detuned microwave field. Such quantum entanglement survives at the steady state. Our work offers new insights and guidance to designate the experiments for observing the entanglement in massive ferromagnetic materials. Fr\"ohlich discovered the remarkable condensation of polar vibrations into the lowest frequency mode when the system is pumped externally. For a full understanding of the Fr\"ohlich condensate one needs to go beyond the mean field level to describe critical behavior as well as quantum fluctuations. The energy redistribution among vibrational modes with nonlinearity included is shown to be essential for realizing the condensate and the phonon-number distribution, revealing the transition from quasi-thermal to super-Poissonian statistics with the pump. We further study the spectroscopic properties of the Fr\"ohlich condensate, which are especially revealed by the narrow linewidth. This gives the long-lived coherence and the collective motion of the condensate. One of the most widely used chiroptical spectroscopic methods for studying chiral molecules is Raman optical activity; however, the chiral Raman optical activity signal is extremely weak. Here, we theoretically examine enhanced chiral signals in a system with strongly prepared molecular coherence. We show that the enhanced chiral signal due to strong molecular coherence is up to four orders of magnitude higher than that of the spontaneous Raman optical activity. We discuss several advantages of studying the heterodyned signal obtained by combining the anti-Stokes signal with a local oscillator. The heterodyning allows direct measurement of the ratio of the chiral and achiral parameters. Taking advantage of the molecular coherence and heterodyne detection, the coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering technique opens up a new potential application for investigation of biomolecular chirality., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures

We study the collective behavior of molecules placed in an infrared (IR) microcavity, incorporating the local fluctuations, i.e., dynamical disorder. The cooperative feature in vibrational polaritons is shown to be dynamically eroded, due to intermolecule coherence. To further resolve such process, we develop a two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy (2D-IR) for molecules interacting with cavity modes. The cooperative feature in correspondence to the spectroscopic signal is specified. The results reveal the dark states by the cross peaks apart from the ones for polaritons, as a result of the breakdown of cooperativity between molecules. We further show that the breakdown of cooperativity profoundly connects to the localization of the vibrational excitations whereas the polariton modes are extended wave over several molecules. Besides, our work offers new physical insight for understanding the recent 2D-IR experiments where the interaction between dark modes and bright polaritons was evident., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

We show that indirect spin-spin interactions between effective spin-1/2 systems can be realized in two parallel 1D optical lattices loaded with polar molecules and/or Rydberg atoms. The effective spin can be encoded into low-energy rotational states of polar molecules or long-lived states of Rydberg atoms, tightly trapped in a deep optical lattice. The spin-spin interactions can be mediated by Rydberg atoms, placed in a parallel shallow optical lattice, interacting with the effective spins by charge-dipole (for polar molecules) or dipole-dipole (for Rydberg atoms) interaction. Indirect XX, Ising and XXZ interactions with interaction coefficients $J^{\bot}$ and $J^{zz}$ sign varying with interspin distance can be realized, in particular, the $J_{1}-J_{2}$ XXZ model with frustrated ferro-(antiferro-)magnetic nearest (next-nearest) neighbor interactions.

We have synthesized the anti-symmetric spin exchange interaction (ASI), which is also called the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, in a superconducting circuit containing five superconducting qubits connected to a bus resonator, by periodically modulating the transition frequencies of the qubits with different modulation phases. This allows us to show the chiral spin dynamics in three-, four- and five-spin clusters. We also demonstrate a three-spin chiral logic gate and entangle up to five qubits in Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states. The cooperative resonance for a spin one half system interacting with dc and ac magnetic field is considered. This interaction in the system collective regime can result in parametic resonance and rapid excitation of the excited spin state of the dense atomic gas. The phenomenon is studied using the density matrix approach. We discuss the implementation of this effect and possible applications of the quantum amplification by superradiant emission of radiation.

We study the statistics of the lasing output from a single atom quantum heat engine, which was originally proposed by Scovil and Schulz-DuBois (SSDB). In this heat engine model, a single three-level atom is strongly coupled with an optical cavity, and contacted with a hot and a cold heat bath together. We derive a fully quantum laser equation for this heat engine model, and obtain the photon number distribution for both below and above the lasing threshold. With the increase of the hot bath temperature, the population is inverted and lasing light comes out. However, we notice that if the hot bath temperature keeps increasing, the atomic decay rate is also enhanced, which weakens the lasing gain. As a result, another critical point appears at a very high temperature of the hot bath, after which the output light become thermal radiation again. To avoid this double-threshold behavior, we introduce a four-level heat engine model, where the atomic decay rate does not depend on the hot bath temperature. In this case, the lasing threshold is much easier to achieve, and the double-threshold behavior disappears., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

We show that atoms falling from outside through a cavity into a black hole (BH) emit acceleration radiation which to a distant observer looks much like Hawking BH radiation. In particular, we find the entropy of the acceleration radiation via a simple laser-like analysis. We call this entropy Horizon Brightened Acceleration Radiation (HBAR) entropy to distinguish it from the BH entropy of Bekenstein and Hawking., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures

Calculation of the entropy of an ideal Bose Einstein Condensate (BEC) in a three dimensional trap reveals unusual, previously unrecognized, features of the Canonical Ensemble. It is found that, for any temperature, the entropy of the Bose gas is equal to the entropy of the excited particles although the entropy of the particles in the ground state is nonzero. We explain this by considering the correlations between the ground state particles and particles in the excited states. These correlations lead to a correlation entropy which is exactly equal to the contribution from the ground state. The correlations themselves arise from the fact that we have a fixed number of particles obeying quantum statistics. We present results for correlation functions between the ground and excited states in Bose gas, so to clarify the role of fluctuations in the system. Recently, optimization techniques have had a significant impact in a variety of fields, leading to a higher signal-to-noise and more streamlined techniques. We consider the possibility for using programmable phase-only spatial optimization of the pump beam to influence the supercontinuum generation process. Preliminary results show that significant broadening and rough control of the supercontinuum spectrum are possible without loss of input energy. This serves as a proof-of-concept demonstration that spatial effects can controllably influence the supercontinuum spectrum, leading to possibilities for utilizing supercontinuum power more efficiently and achieving arbitrary spectral control.

We report an analytic solution for a three-level atom driven by arbitrary time-dependent electromagnetic pulses. In particular, we consider far-detuned driving pulses and show an excellent match between our analytic result and the numerical simulations. We use our solution to derive a pulse area theorem for three--level $V$ and $\Lambda$ systems without making the rotating wave approximation. Formulated as an energy conservation law, this pulse area theorem provides a simple picture for a pulse propagation through a three--level media.

We propose to use intensity correlation microscopy in combination with structured illumination to image quantum emitters that exhibit antibunching with a spatial resolution reaching far beyond the Rayleigh limit. Combining intensity measurements and intensity auto correlations up to order $m$ creates an effective PSF with FWHM shrunk by the factor $\sqrt{m}$. Structured Illumination microscopy on the other hand introduces a resolution improvement of factor 2 by use of the principle of moir\'e fringes. Here, we show that for linear low-intensity excitation and linear optical detection the simultaneous use of both techniques leads to an in theory unlimited resolution power with the improvement scaling favorably as $m + \sqrt{m}$ in dependence of the correlation order $m$. Hence, yielding this technique to be of interest in microscopy for imaging a variety of samples including biological ones. We construct the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) by dynamically coupling a superradiant state with a subradiant state. The superradiant and subradiant states with enhanced and inhibited decay rates act as the excited and metastable states in EIT, respectively. Their energy difference determined by the distance between the atoms can be measured by the EIT spectra, which renders this method useful in subwavelength metrology. The scheme can also be applied to many atoms in nuclear quantum optics, where the transparency point due to counter-rotating wave terms can be observed., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

One of the important nonclassical effects in quantum optics is the anti-bunching, which has been observed in a large class of physical systems - including light-harvesting antennas with cyclic structures. The units of the ring couple with adjacent ones through dipole-dipole interactions. We show how this strong dipole-dipole interaction leads to photon-blockade resulting in the suppression of double excitation pathway and anti-bunching in photosynthesis systems. The robustness of the photon blockade is demonstrated against the disorder in the ring structures. We study the dynamics of an open quantum system interacting with a non-thermal bath. Here, "non-thermal" means that the bath modes do not need to have the same temperature, but they have an effective temperature distribution. We find that, when a quantum system is interacting with such a non-thermal bath far from thermal equilibrium, it is no longer proper to use any coarse-grained Markovian description for the system, even when their coupling strength is quite weak. Especially, when there is coherent transition with strong interference strength in the quantum system, the Markovian master equation would bring in a serious problem of negative probability. Mesoscopic superposition states of photons can be prepared in three cavities interacting with the same two-level atom. By periodically modulating the three cavity frequencies around the transition frequency of the atom with $2\pi/3$ phase difference, the time reversal symmetry is broken and an optical circulator is generated with chiralities depending on the quantum state of the atom. A superposition of the atomic states can guide photons from one cavity to a mesoscopic superposition of the other two cavities. The physics can be understood in a finite spin-orbit-coupled Fock-state lattice where the atom and the cavities carry the spin and the orbit degrees of freedom, respectively. This scheme can be realized in circuit QED architectures and provides a new platform for exploring quantum information and topological physics in novel lattices., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

We study the protection of subradiant states by the symmetry of the atomic distributions in the Dicke limit, in which collective Lamb shifts cannot be neglected. We find that anti-symmetric states are subradiant states for distributions with reflection symmetry. Continuous symmetry can also be used to achieve subradiance. Two-dimensional (2D) materials beyond graphene such as transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have unique mechanical, optical and electronic properties with promising applications in flexible devices, catalysis and sensing. Optical imaging of TMDs using photoluminescence and Raman spectroscopy can reveal the effects of structure, strain, doping, defects, edge states, grain boundaries and surface functionalization. However, Raman signals are inherently weak and so far have been limited in spatial resolution in TMDs to a few hundred nanometres which is much larger than the intrinsic scale of these effects. Here we overcome the diffraction limit by using resonant tip-enhanced Raman scattering (TERS) of few-layer MoS2, and obtain nanoscale optical images with ~ 20 nm spatial resolution. This becomes possible due to electric field enhancement in an optimized subnanometre-gap resonant tip-substrate configuration. We investigate the limits of signal enhancement by varying the tip-sample gap with sub-Angstrom precision and observe a quantum quenching behavior, as well as a Schottky-Ohmic transition, for subnanometre gaps, which enable surface mapping based on this new contrast mechanism. This quantum regime of plasmonic gap-mode enhancement with a few nanometre thick MoS2 junction may be used for designing new quantum optoelectronic devices and sensors.

High finesse frequency combs (HFC) with large ratio of the frequency spacing to the width of the spectral components have demonstrated remarkable results in many applications such as precision spectroscopy and metrology. We found that low finesse frequency combs having very small ratio of the frequency spacing to the width of the spectral components are more sensitive to the exact resonance with absorber than HFC. Our method is based on time domain measurements reviling oscillations of the radiation intensity after passing through an optically thick absorber. Fourier analysis of the oscillations allows to reconstruct the spectral content of the comb. If the central component of the incident comb is in exact resonance with the single line absorber, the contribution of the first sideband frequency into oscillations is exactly zero. We demonstrate this technique with gamma-photon absorbtion by M\"{o}ssbauer nuclei providing the spectral resolution beyond the natural broadening., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures
