FLASH is the first soft X-ray FEL user facility, routinely providing brilliant photon beams for users since 2005. The second undulator branch of this facility, FLASH2, is gap-tunable which allows to test and use advanced lasing concepts. In particular, we developed a two-color operation mode based on the alternatingly tuned undulator segments (every other segment is tuned to the second wavelength). This scheme is advantageous in comparison with a subsequent generation of two colors in two consecutive sections of the undulator line. First, source positions of the two FEL beams are close to each other which makes it easier to focus them on a sample. Second, the amplification is more efficient in this configuration since the segments with respectively "wrong" wavelength still act as bunchers. We studied operation of this scheme in the regime of small and large separation of tunes (up to a factor of two). We developed new methods for online intensity measurements of the two colors simultaneously that require a combination of two detectors. We also demonstrated our capabilities to measure spectral and temporal properties of two pulses with different wavelengths.

The interaction of intense particle bunches with plasma can give rise to plasma wakes capable of sustaining gigavolt-per-metre electric fields, which are orders of magnitude higher than provided by state-of-the-art radio-frequency technology. Plasma wakefields can, therefore, strongly accelerate charged particles and offer the opportunity to reach higher particle energies with smaller and hence more widely available accelerator facilities. However, the luminosity and brilliance demands of high-energy physics and photon science require particle bunches to be accelerated at repetition rates of thousands or even millions per second, which are orders of magnitude higher than demonstrated with plasma-wakefield technology. Here we investigate the upper limit on repetition rates of beam-driven plasma accelerators by measuring the time it takes for the plasma to recover to its initial state after perturbation by a wakefield. The many-nanosecond-level recovery time measured establishes the in-principle attainability of megahertz rates of acceleration in plasmas. The experimental signatures of the perturbation are well described by simulations of a temporally evolving parabolic ion channel, transferring energy from the collapsing wake to the surrounding media. This result establishes that plasma-wakefield modules could be developed as feasible high-repetition-rate energy boosters at current and future particle-physics and photon-science facilities.

Bond-order potentials (BOPs) provide a local and physically transparent description of the interatomic interaction. Here we describe the efficient implementation of analytic BOPs in the BOPfox program and library. We discuss the integration of the underlying non-magnetic, collinear-magnetic and noncollinear-magnetic tight-binding models that are evaluated by the analytic BOPs. We summarize the flow of an analytic BOP calculation including the determination of self-returning paths for computing the moments, the self-consistency cycle, the estimation of the band-width from the recursion coefficients, and the termination of the BOP expansion. We discuss the implementation of the calculations of forces, stresses and magnetic torques with analytic BOPs. We show the scaling of analytic BOP calculations with the number of atoms and moments, present options for speeding up the calculations and outline different concepts of parallelisation. In the appendix we compile the implemented equations of the analytic BOP methodology and comments on the implementation. This description should be relevant for other implementations and further developments of analytic bond-order potentials.

Harmonic lasing is a perspective mode of operation of X-ray FEL user facilities that allows to provide brilliant beams of higher energy photons for user experiments. Another useful application of harmonic lasing is so called Harmonic Lasing Self-Seeded Free Electron Laser (HLSS FEL) that allows to improve spectral brightness of these facilities. In the past, harmonic lasing has been demonstrated in the FEL oscillators in infrared and visible wavelength ranges, but not in high-gain FELs and not at short wavelengths. In this paper we report on the first evidence of the harmonic lasing and the first operation of the HLSS FEL at the soft X-ray FEL user facility FLASH in the wavelength range between 4.5 nm and 15 nm. Spectral brightness was improved in comparison with Self-Amplified Spontaneous emission (SASE) FEL by a factor of six in the exponential gain regime. A better performance of HLSS FEL with respect to SASE FEL in the post-saturation regime with a tapered undulator was observed as well. The first demonstration of harmonic lasing in a high-gain FEL and at short wavelengths paves the way for a variety of applications of this new operation mode in X-ray FELs.

The FLASHForward project at DESY is a pioneering plasma-wakefield acceleration experiment that aims to produce, in a few centimetres of ionised hydrogen, beams with energy of order GeV that are of quality sufficient to be used in a free-electron laser. The plasma wave will be driven by high-current density electron beams from the FLASH linear accelerator and will explore both external and internal witness-beam injection techniques. The plasma is created by ionising a gas in a gas cell with a multi-TW laser system, which can also be used to provide optical diagnostics of the plasma and electron beams due to the <30 fs synchronisation between the laser and the driving electron beam. This archive summarizes a working paper and conference proceedings related to laser wire scanner development for the Future Linear Collider (FLC) in the years 2001 to 2006. In particular the design, setup and data taking for the laser wire experiments at PETRA II and CT2 are described. The Laser-wire will be an essential diagnostic tool at the International Linear Collider. It uses a finely focussed laser beam to measure the transverse profile of electron bunches by detecting the Compton-scattered photons (or degraded electrons) downstream of where the laser beam intersects the electron beam. Such a system has been installed at the PETRA storage ring at DESY, which uses a piezo-driven mirror to scan the laser-light across the electron beam. Lat- est results of experimental data taking are presented and compared to detailed simulations using the Geant4 based program BDSIM., Comment: 3 pagesm 4 figures. Pump-probe experiments combining pulses from a X-ray FEL and an optical femtosecond laser are very attractive for sub-picosecond time-resolved studies. Since the synchronization between the two independent light sources to an accuracy of 100 fs is not yet solved, it is proposed to derive both femtosecond radiation pulses from the same electron bunch but from two insertion devices. This eliminates the need for synchronization and developing a tunable high power femtosecond quantum laser. In the proposed scheme a GW-level soft X-ray pulse is naturally synchronized with a GW-level optical pulse, independent of any jitter in the arrival time of the electron bunches. The concept is based on the generation of optical radiation in a master oscillator-power FEL amplifier (MOPA) configuration. X-ray radiation is generated in an X-ray undulator inserted between the modulator and radiator sections of the optical MOPA scheme. An attractive feature of the FEL amplifier scheme is the absence of any apparent limitations which could prevent operation in the femtosecond regime in a wide (200-900 nm) wavelength range.
