Colloidal molecules are ideal model systems for mimicking real molecules and can serve as versatile building blocks for the bottom-up self-assembly of flexible and smart materials. While most colloidal molecules are rigid objects, the development of colloidal joints has made it possible to also include conformational flexibility into colloidal molecules. However, their unrestricted range of motion does not capture the restricted motion range and bond directionality that is typical of real molecules. In this work, we create flexible colloidal molecules with an in situ controllable motion range and bond directionality by assembling spherical particles onto cubes functionalized with complementary surface-mobile DNA. We assemble colloidal molecules with different coordination number of spheres by varying the size ratio and find that they feature a constrained range of motion above a critical size ratio. Using theory and simulations, we show that the particle shape together with the multivalent bonds create an effective free-energy landscape for the motion of the sphere on the surface of the cube. We quantify the confinement of the spheres on the surface of the cube and the probability to change facet. We find that temperature can be used as an extra control parameter to switch in situ between full and constrained flexibility of these colloidal molecules. These flexible colloidal molecules with temperature switching motion range can be used to investigate the effect of directional, yet flexible bonds in determining their self-assembly and phase behavior, and may be employed as constructional units in microrobotics and novel smart materials

Colloidal molecules are designed to mimic their molecular analogues through their anisotropic shape and interactions. However, current experimental realizations are missing the structural flexibility present in real molecules thereby restricting their use as model systems. We overcome this limitation by assembling reconfigurable colloidal molecules from silica particles functionalized with mobile DNA linkers in high yields. We achieve this by steering the self-assembly pathway towards the formation of finite-sized clusters by employing high number ratios of particles functionalized with complementary DNA strands. The size ratio of the two species of particles provides control over the overall cluster size, or, "valence", as well as the degree of reconfigurability. The bond flexibility provided by the mobile linkers allows the successful assembly of colloidal clusters with the geometrically expected maximum valence. We quantitatively examine the self-assembly dynamics of these flexible colloidal molecules by a combination of experiments, molecular dynamics simulations, and an analytical model. Our "flexible colloidal molecules" are exciting building blocks for investigating and exploiting the self-assembly of complex hierarchical structures, photonic crystals and colloidal meta-materials.

For biologically relevant macromolecules such as intrinsically disordered proteins, internal degrees of freedom that allow for shape changes have a large influence on both the motion and function of the compound. A detailed understanding of the effect of flexibility is needed in order to explain their behavior. Here, we study a model system of freely-jointed chains of three to six colloidal spheres, using both simulations and experiments. We find that in spite of their short lengths, their conformational statistics are well described by two-dimensional Flory theory, while their average translational and rotational diffusivity follow the Kirkwood-Riseman scaling. Their maximum flexibility does not depend on the length of the chain, but is determined by the near-wall in-plane translational diffusion coefficient of an individual sphere. Furthermore, we uncover shape-dependent effects in the short-time diffusivity of colloidal tetramer chains, as well as non-zero couplings between the different diffusive modes. Impurity-induced defects play a crucial role for the properties of crystals, but little is known about impurities with anisotropic shape. Here, we study how colloidal dumbbells distort and interact with a hexagonal crystal of charged colloidal spheres at a fluid interface. We find that subtle changes in the dumbbell length induce a transition from a local distortion to a particle-bound dislocation, and determine how the dumbbell moves inside the repulsive hexagonal lattice. Our results provide new routes towards controlling material properties through particle-bound dislocations.

Geometric confinement strongly influences the behavior of microparticles in liquid environments. However, to date, nonspherical particle behaviors close to confining boundaries, even as simple as planar walls, remain largely unexplored. Here, we measure the height distribution and orientation of colloidal dumbbells above walls by means of digital in-line holographic microscopy. We find that while larger dumbbells are oriented almost parallel to the wall, smaller dumbbells of the same material are surprisingly oriented at preferred angles. We determine the total height-dependent force acting on the dumbbells by considering gravitational effects and electrostatic particle-wall interactions. Our modeling reveals that at specific heights both net forces and torques on the dumbbells are simultaneously below the thermal force and energy, respectively, which makes the observed orientations possible. Our results highlight the rich near-wall dynamics of nonspherical particles, and can further contribute to the development of quantitative frameworks for arbitrarily-shaped microparticle dynamics in confinement., Comment: Ruben W. Shape changes resulting from segmental flexibility are ubiquitous in molecular and biological systems, and are expected to affect both the diffusive motion and (biological) function of dispersed objects. The recent development of colloidal structures with freely-jointed bonds have now made a direct experimental investigation of diffusive shape-changing objects possible. Here, we show the effect of segmental flexibility on the simplest possible model system, a freely-jointed cluster of three spherical particles, and validate long-standing theoretical predictions. We find that in addition to the rotational diffusion time, an analogous conformational diffusion time governs the relaxation of the diffusive motion, unique to flexible assemblies, and that their translational diffusivity differs by a small but measurable amount. We also uncovered a Brownian quasiscallop mode, where diffusive motion is coupled to Brownian shape changes. The use of colloidal supported lipid bilayers (CSLBs) has recently been extended to create colloidal joints, that - in analogy to their macroscopic counterparts - can flexibly connect colloidal particles. These novel elements enable the assembly of structures with internal degrees of flexibility, but rely on previously unappreciated properties: the simultaneous fluidity of the bilayer, lateral mobility of inserted (linker) molecules and colloidal stability. Here we characterize every step in the manufacturing of CSLBs in view of these requirements using confocal microscopy and fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP). Specifically, we have studied the influence of different particle properties (roughness, surface charge, chemical composition, polymer coating) on the quality and mobility of the supported bilayer. We find that the insertion of lipopolymers in the bilayer can affect its homogeneity and fluidity. We improve the colloidal stability by inserting lipopolymers or double-stranded inert DNA into the bilayer. Finally, we include surface-mobile DNA linkers and use FRAP to characterize their lateral mobility both in their freely diffusive and bonded state. The primary objective of this study was to identify concentrations and locations of American Indian, Asian American, Black, and Spanish Surname students attending the public schools of California. A comparative analysis of the four ethnic minority groups being studied is also presented. The study first identifies four major ethnic minority groups in the United States and indicates their respective percentages of the total United States population. Second, the same ethnic minority groups are identified for California and compared to national percentages. Third, the study identifies the student ethnic minority population in California. Results are presented in tabular form with narrative analysis. (JD)
