Stress-annealing (SA) is a novel secondary processing technique capable of significantly increasing magnetic anisotropy and controlling magnetic permeability in planar-cast amorphous precursor ribbons. In this technical memorandum, measures taken to improve the mechanical handling of brittle Fe-based ribbons are described for a custom SA system. This system was then used to process a series of Fe-based alloys (Fe-2Nb-2Mo-1Cu-15.5Si-7B at.%, Fe-5Co-3Ta-1Cu-16Si-6.5B at.%, and Fe-5Co-3Ta-1Cu-16.5Si-6B at.%) and the resulting magnetic properties were determined. The Fe-5Co-3Ta-1Cu-16.5Si-6B at.% alloy was found to be the most promising composition of the three in terms of surviving an optimized spool-to-spool continuous SA process under 90 MPa of tensile stress at 650 °C using a feed rate of 75.5 in/min, which equated to approximately 10 second anneal time. These optimally annealed ribbons exhibited flat hysteresis loops with a saturation magnetization of nearly 1.2 T, low magnetic coercivity (≈ 2 A m-1), and relative permeability of approximately 500.

We report on the broadband characterization of Co74:6Fe2:7Mn2:7Nb4Si2B14 (at%) melt-spun, soft magnetic alloy ribbons after various secondary processing treatments. Ribbons were investigated in the as-cast (melt-spun) condition, after annealing under stress at 50 - 200 MPa, and after transverse magnetic field (TMF) annealing. The magnetization dynamics of these materials have been studied from 10 - 60 GHz using ferromagnetic resonance (FMR). The in-plane uniaxial anisotropy was determined from the FMR data and permeability extracted for each condition. The permeability determined from broadband FMR was in good agreement with independently determined values using vibrating sample magnetometry and impedance spectrometry of toroidal cores. The effective damping parameter (α (sub ϱff)) of all the samples was close to 0.015 except for the TMF sample, which showed higher damping, possibly due to two magnon scattering.

The effects of micro-additions of boron and zirconium on grain-boundary (GB) structure and strength inpolycrystalline γ(f.c.c.) plus γ’(L12) strengthened Co-9.5Al-7.5W-X at. % alloys (X=0-Ternary, 0.05B, 0.01B,0.05Zr, and 0.005B-0.05Zr at. %) are studied. Creep tests performed at 850 °C demonstrate that GB strength and cohesion limit the creep resistance and ductility of the ternary B- and Zr-free alloy due to intergranular fracture. Alloys with 0.05B and 0.005B-0.05Zr both exhibit improved creep strength due to enhanced GB cohesion,compared to the baseline ternary Co-9.5Al-7.5W alloy, but alloys containing 0.01B or 0.05Zr additions displayed no benefit. Atom-probe tomography (APT) is utilized to measure GB segregation, where B and Zr are demonstrated to segregate at GBs. A Gibbsian interfacial excess of 5.57 ± 1.04 atoms nm(exp) -2 was found for B at aGB in the 0.01B alloy and 2.88 ± 0.81 and 2.40 ± 0.84 atoms nm2 for B and Zr, respectively, for the 0.005B-0.05Zr alloy. The GBs in the highest B-containing (0.05B) alloy exhibit micrometer-sized boride precipitates with adjacent precipitate denuded-zones (PDZs), whereas secondary precipitation at the GBs is absent in theother four alloys. The 0.05B alloy has the smallest room temperature yield strength, by 6%, which is attributedto the PDZs, but it exhibits the largest increase in creep strength (with an ~2.5 order of magnitude decrease inthe minimum strain rate for a given stress at 850 °C) over the baseline Co-9.5Al-7.5W alloy.

A multi-layered component, such as a rocket engine combustion chamber, includes NiAl or NiAl-based alloy as a structural layer on the hot side of the component. A second structural layer is formed of material selected form Ni-based superalloys, Co-based alloys, Fe-based alloys, Cu, and Cu-based alloys. The second material is more ductile than the NiAl and imparts increased toughness to the component. The second material is selected to enhance one or more predetermined physical properties of the component. Additional structural layers may be included with the additional material(s) being selected for their impact on physical properties of the component.
