In an attempt to further characterise the near-Earth asteroid (NEA) population we present 38 new light-curves acquired between September 2020 and November 2023 for NEAs (7335) 1989 JA, (7822) 1991 CS, (154244) 2002 KL6 and (159402) 1999 AP10, obtained from observations taken at the Teide Observatory (Tenerife, Spain). With these new observations along with archival data, we computed their first shape models and spin solutions by applying the light curve inversion method. The obtained rotation periods are in good agreement with those reported in previous works, with improved uncertainties. Additionally, besides the constant period models for (7335) 1989 JA, (7822) 1991 CS and (159402) 1999 AP10, our results for (154244) 2002 KL6 suggest that it could be affected by a Yarkovsky-O'Keefe-Radzievskii-Paddack acceleration with a value of $\upsilon \simeq -7 \times 10^{-9}$ rad d$^{-2}$. This would be one of the first detections of this effect slowing down an asteroid.

The transit method allows the detection and characterization of planetary systems by analyzing stellar light curves. Convolutional neural networks appear to offer a viable solution for automating these analyses. In this research, two 1D convolutional neural network models, which work with simulated light curves in which transit-like signals were injected, are presented. One model operates on complete light curves and estimates the orbital period, and the other one operates on phase-folded light curves and estimates the semimajor axis of the orbit and the square of the planet-to-star radius ratio. Both models were tested on real data from TESS light curves with confirmed planets to ensure that they are able to work with real data. The results obtained show that 1D CNNs are able to characterize transiting exoplanets from their host star's detrended light curve and, furthermore, reducing both the required time and computational costs compared with the current detection and characterization algorithms.

To simulate a 200 nm photoexcitation in cyclobutanone to the n-3s Rydberg state, classical trajectories were excited from a Wigner distribution to the singlet state manifold based on excitation energies and oscillator strenghts. Twelve singlet and twelve triplet states are treated using TD-B3LYP-D3/6-31+G$^{**}$ for the electronic structure and the nuclei are propagated with the Tully Surface Hopping method. Using TD-DFT, we are able to predict the bond cleavage that takes place on the S$_1$ surface as well as the ultrafast deactivation from the Rydberg n-3s state to the n$\pi^*$. After showing that triplet states and higher-lying singlet states do not play any crucial role during the early dynamics (i.e., the first 300 fs), the SA(6)-CASSCF(8,11)/aug-cc-pvDZ method is used as an electronic structure and the outcome of the non-adiabatic dynamic simulations is recomputed. Gas-phase ultrafast electron diffraction (GUED) spectra are computed for both electronic structure methods, showing significantly different results.

We present a surface analog to a dripping faucet, where a viscous liquid slides down an immiscible meniscus. Periodic pinch-off of the dripping filament is observed, generating a succession of monodisperse floating lenses. We show that this interfacial dripping faucet can be described analogously to its single-phase counterpart, replacing surface tension by the spreading coefficient, and even undergoes a transition to a jetting regime. We present 24 new dense lightcurves of the near-Earth asteroids (3103) Eger, (161989) Cacus, (2100) Ra-Shalom and (12711) Tukmit, obtained with the Instituto Astrof\'isico Canarias 80 and Telescopio Abierto Remoto 2 telescopes at the Teide Observatory (Tenerife, Spain) during 2021 and 2022, in the framework of projects visible NEAs observations survey and NEO Rapid Observation, Characterization and Key Simulations. The shape models and rotation state parameters ($P$, $\lambda$, $\beta$) were computed by applying the lightcurve inversion method to the new data altogether with the archival data. For (3013) Eger and (161989) Cacus, our shape models and rotation state parameters agree with previous works, though they have smaller uncertainties. For (2100) Ra-Shalom, our results also agree with previous studies. Still, we find that a Yarkovsky - O'Keefe - Radzievskii - Paddack acceleration of $\upsilon = (0.223\pm0.237)\times10^{-8}$ rad d$^{-2}$ slightly improves the fit of the lightcurves, suggesting that (2100) Ra-Shalom could be affected by this acceleration. We also present for the first time a shape model for (12711) Tukmit, along with its rotation state parameters ($P=3.484900 \pm 0.000031$ hr, $\lambda = 27^{\circ}\pm 8^{\circ}$, $\beta = 9^{\circ} \pm 15^{\circ}$).

The transit method is one of the most relevant exoplanet detection techniques, which consists of detecting periodic eclipses in the light curves of stars. This is not always easy due to the presence of noise in the light curves, which is induced, for example, by the response of a telescope to stellar flux. For this reason, we aimed to develop an artificial neural network model that is able to detect these transits in light curves obtained from different telescopes and surveys. We created artificial light curves with and without transits to try to mimic those expected for the extended mission of the Kepler telescope (K2) in order to train and validate a 1D convolutional neural network model, which was later tested, obtaining an accuracy of 99.02 % and an estimated error (loss function) of 0.03. These results, among others, helped to confirm that the 1D CNN is a good choice for working with non-phased-folded Mandel and Agol light curves with transits. It also reduces the number of light curves that have to be visually inspected to decide if they present transit-like signals and decreases the time needed for analyzing each (with respect to traditional analysis).

In splat painting, a collection of liquid droplets is projected onto the substrate by imposing a controlled acceleration to a paint-loaded brush. To unravel the physical phenomena at play in this artistic technique, we perform a series of experiments where the amount of expelled liquid and the resulting patterns on the substrate are systematically characterized as a function of the liquid viscosity and brush acceleration. Experimental trends and orders of magnitude are rationalized by simple physical models, revealing the existence of an inertia-dominated flow in the anisotropic, porous tip of the brush. We argue that splat painting artists intuitively tune their parameters to work in this regime, which may also play a role in other pulsed flows, like violent expiratory events or sudden geophysical processes., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures

A significant step forward in Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) developments can only be achieved by proposing mold-breaking research based on selecting the best materials for the cell components, optimizing cell manufacture, anticipating the degradation mechanisms of the LIBs, and consolidating the regeneration processes of damaged batteries. LIBs with longer recycling life, better safety, and the ability to be reused will establish sustainable state-of-the-art batteries with maximum energy efficiency, low costs, and minimal CO2 emissions within a circular economy, promoting sustainability in areas as relevant as electromobility and portable electronics. Recently, there has been increasing interest in applying Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques and their subclasses to better predict novel materials with designed properties. This collection of methods has already obtained considerable success, having been used to predict numerous physical properties of materials. However, compared to other fields, the materials data are typically much smaller and sometimes more diverse, which undoubtedly affects the construction and effectiveness of AI models. At present, several Data Augmentation (DA) methods have been proposed in materials science based on flipping, rotating, and distorting the unit cells of materials, which have been demonstrated to be very efficient in increasing the size and quality of data. Here we present an even more effective new method of Data Augmentation based on the lattice scaling of crystal structures. In the lattice scaling DA method, the unit cell is perturbed, undergoing an increase and decrease of the unit cell volume in an isotropic or anisotropic way. This transformation is particularly pertinent for battery components since volume changes of up to 5% have been reported for the insertion-based LIBs during cycling.

Understand and predict the dynamics of dispersed micro-objects in microfluidics is crucial in numerous natural, industrial and technological situations. In this paper, we experimentally characterized the equilibrium velocity $V$ and lateral position $\varepsilon$ of various dispersed micro-objects such as beads, bubbles and drops, in a cylindrical microchannel over an unprecedent wide range of parameters. By systematically varying the dimensionless object size ($d \in [0.1; 1]$), the viscosity ratio ($\lambda \in [10^{-2}; \infty[$), the density ratio ($\varphi \in [10^{-3}; 2]$), the Reynolds number ($\Re \in [10^{-2}; 10^2]$), and the capillary number ($\text{Ca} \in [10^{-3}; 0.3]$), we offer a general study exploring various dynamics from the nonderformable viscous regime to the deformable visco-inertio-capillary regime, thus enabling to highlight the sole and combined roles of inertia and capillary effects on lateral migration. The experiments are compared and well-agree with a steady 3D Navier-Stokes model for incompressible two-phase fluids including both the effects of inertia and possible interfacial deformations. This model enables to rationalize the experiments and to provide an exhaustive parametric analysis on the influence of the main parameters of the problem, mainly on two aspects: the stability of the centered position and the velocity of the dispersed object. Interestingly, we propose a useful correlation for the object velocity $V$ as functions of the $d$, $\varepsilon$ and $\lambda$, obtained in the $\text{Re}=\text{Ca}=0$ limit, but actually valid for a larger range of values of $\text{Re}$ and $\text{Ca}$ in the linear regimes., Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures, submitted to Journal of Fluid Mechanics

Evaporation of multi-component liquid mixtures in confined geometries, such as capillaries, is crucial in applications such as microfluidics, two-phase cooling devices, and inkjet printing. Predicting the behaviour of such systems becomes challenging because evaporation triggers complex spatio-temporal changes in the composition of the mixture. These changes in composition, in turn, affect evaporation. In the present work, we study the evaporation of aqueous glycerol solutions contained as a liquid column in a capillary tube. Experiments and direct numerical simulations show three evaporation regimes characterised by different temporal evolutions of the normalised mass transfer rate (or Sherwood number, $Sh$), namely $Sh (\tilde{t}) = 1$, $Sh \sim 1/\sqrt{\tilde{t}}$, and $Sh \sim \exp\left(-\tilde{t}\right)$. Here $\tilde{t}$ is a normalised time. We present a simplistic analytical model which shows that the evaporation dynamics can be expressed by the classical relation $Sh = \exp \left( \tilde{t} \right) \mathrm{erfc} \left( \sqrt{\tilde{t}}\right)$. For small and medium $\tilde{t}$, this expression results in the first and second of the three observed scaling regimes, respectively. This analytical model is formulated in the limit of pure diffusion and when the penetration depth $\delta(t)$ of the diffusion front is much smaller than the length $L(t)$ of the liquid column. When $\delta \approx L$, finite length effects lead to $Sh \sim \exp\left(-\tilde{t}\right)$, i.e. the third regime. Finally, we extend our analytical model to incorporate the effect of advection and determine the conditions under which this effect is important. Our results provide fundamental insight into the physics of selective evaporation from a multi-component liquid column.

In the present work, we developed a sustainable and effective antimicrobial surface film based on Micro-Fibrillated Cellulose. The resulting porous cellulose thin film is barely noticeable to human eyes due to its sub-micron thickness, of which the coverage, porosity and microstructure can be modulated by the formulations developed. Using goniometers and a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), we observed a threefold reduction in water contact angles and accelerated (more than 50% faster) water evaporation kinetics on the cellulose film. The thin film exhibits not only a rapid inactivation effect against SARS-CoV-2 in 5 minutes, following deposition of the virus loaded droplets, but also an exceptional ability to reduce contact transfer of liquid, e.g. respiratory droplets, onto surfaces such as artificial skin by more than 90%. It also exhibits excellent antimicrobial performance in inhibiting the growth of both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria (E.coli and S.epidermidis) due to the excellent porosity and hydrophilicity. Additionally, the cellulose film shows nearly 100% resistance to skin scraping in dry condition thanks to its strong attachment to the substrate, whilst good removability once wetted, suggesting its practical suitability for daily use. Importantly, the coating can be formed on solid substrates readily by spraying and requires solely a simple formulation of a plant-based cellulose material with no additives, rendering it a scalable, affordable and green solution for antimicrobial surfaces. Implementing such cellulose films could thus play a significant role in controlling future pan- and epidemics, in particularly during the first phase when appropriate medication needs to be developed.

Pathogens contained in airborne respiratory droplets have been seen to remain infectious for periods of time that depend on the ambient temperature and humidity. In particular, regarding the humidity, the empirically least favorable conditions for the survival of viral pathogens are found at intermediate humidities. However, the precise physico-chemical mechanisms that generate such least-favorable conditions are not understood yet. In this work, we analyze the evaporation dynamics of respiratory-like droplets in air, semi-levitating them on superhydrophobic substrates with minimal solid-liquid contact area. Our results reveal that, compared to pure water droplets, the salt dissolved in the droplets can significantly change the evaporation behaviour, especially for high humidities close to and above the deliquesence limit. Due to the hygroscopic properties of salt, water evaporation is inhibited once the salt concentration reaches a critical value that depends on the relative humidity. The salt concentration in a stable droplet reaches its maximum at around 75% relative humidity, generating conditions that might shorten the time in which pathogens remain infectious., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures. Dip-coating is a common technique used to cover a solid surface with a thin liquid film, the thickness of which was successfully predicted by the theory developed by Landau & Levich and Derjaguin in the 1940's. In this work, we present an extension of their theory to the case where the dipping bath contains two immiscible liquids, one lighter than the other, resulting in the entrainment of two thin films on the substrate. We report how the thicknesses of the coated films depend on the capillary number, on the ratios of the properties of the two liquids and on the relative thickness of the upper fluid layer in the bath. We also show that the liquid/liquid and liquid/gas interfaces evolve independently from each other as if only one liquid was coated, except for a very small region where their separation falls quickly to its asymptotic value and the shear stresses at the two interfaces peak. Interestingly, we find that the final coated thicknesses are determined by the values of these maximum shear stresses.

Mechanical forces influence the development and behavior of biological tissues. In many situations these forces are exerted or resisted by elastic compliant structures such as the own-tissue cellular matrix or other surrounding tissues. This kind of tissue-elastic body interactions are also at the core of many state-of-the-art {\it in situ} force measurement techniques employed in biophysics. This creates the need to model tissue interaction with the surrounding elastic bodies that exert these forces, raising the question: which are the minimum ingredients needed to describe such interactions? We conduct experiments where migrating cell monolayers push on carbon fibers as a model problem. Although the migrating tissue is able to bend the fiber for some time, it eventually recoils before coming to a stop. This stop occurs when cells have performed a fixed mechanical work on the fiber, regardless of its stiffness. Based on these observations we develop a minimal active-fluid model that reproduces the experiments and predicts quantitatively relevant features of the system. The diffusion-driven growth of a dense cloud of bubbles immersed in a gas-supersaturated liquid is a problem that finds applications in several modern technologies such as solvent-exchange micro-reactors, nanotechnology or the manufacturing of foamy materials. However, under Earth's gravity conditions, these dynamics can only be observed for a very limited time if the cloud is not attached to a surface, due to the action of buoyancy, i.e. of gravity effects. Here, we present experimental observations of the time evolution of dense bubble clouds growing in CO$_2$-supersaturated water in microgravity conditions. We report the existence of three regimes where the bubble cloud exhibits different growth rates. At short times, each bubble grows independently following the Epstein--Plesset equation. Later on, bubbles start to interact with each other and their growth rate diminishes as they compete for the available CO$_2$. When this happens, the growth rate slows down. This occurs earlier the deeper the bubble is in the cloud. Finally, at long times, only those bubbles on the husk continue growing. These regimes may be qualitatively described by a mathematical model where each individual bubble grows in the presence of a constellation of point mass sinks. Despite the model being only valid for dilute bubble clouds, its predictions are consistent with the experimental observations, even though the bubble clouds we observe are rather dense.

Most commercial microfluidic droplet generators rely on the planar flow-focusing configuration implemented in polymer or glass chips. The planar geometry, however, suffers from many limitations and drawbacks, such as the need of specific coatings or the use of dedicated surfactants, depending on the fluids in play. On the contrary, and thanks to their axisymmetric geometry, glass capillary-based droplet generators are a priori not fluid-dependent. Nevertheless, they have never reached the market because their assembly requires art-dependent and not scalable fabrication techniques. Here we present a new device, called Raydrop, based on the alignment of two capillaries immersed in a pressurized chamber containing the continuous phase. The dispersed phase exits one of the capillaries through a 3D-printed nozzle, placed in front of the extraction capillary for collecting the droplets. This non-embedded implementation of an axisymmetric flow-focusing is referred to {\it co-flow-focusing}. Experimental results demonstrate the universality of the device in terms of the variety of fluids that can be emulsified, as well as the range of droplet radii that can be obtained, without neither the need of surfactant nor coating. Additionally, numerical computations of the Navier-Stokes equations based on the quasi-steadiness assumption are shown to correctly predict the droplet radius in the dripping regime and the dripping-jetting transition when varying the geometrical and fluid parameters. The monodispersity ensured by the dripping regime, the robustness of the fabrication technique, the optimization capabilities from the numerical modeling and the universality of the configuration confer to the Raydrop technology a very high potential in the race towards high-throughput droplet generation processes.

Analytical considerations and potential flow numerical simulations of the pinch-off of bubbles at high Reynolds numbers reveal that the bubble minimum radius, $r_n$, decreases as $\tau\propto r_n^2 \, (-\ln{r_n^2})^{1/2}$, where $\tau$ is the time to break-up, when the local shape of the bubble near the singularity is symmetric. However, if the gas convective terms in the momentum equation become of the order of those of the liquid, the bubble shape is no longer symmetric and the evolution of the neck changes to a $r_n\propto\tau^{1/3}$ power law. Here we report the results of an experimental study where we measure the hydrodynamic force acting on a plate which is lifted from a water surface, suddently starting to move upwards with an acceleration much larger than gravity. Our work focuses on the early stage of the plate motion, when the hydrodynamic suction forces due to the liquid inertia are the most relevant ones. Besides the force, we measure as well the acceleration at the center of the plate and the time evolution of the wetted area. The results of this study show that, at very early stages, the hydrodynamic force can be estimated by a simple extension to the linear exit theory by Korobkin (2013), which incorporates an added mass to the body dynamics. However, at longer times, the measured acceleration decays even though the applied external force continues to increase. Moreover, high-speed recordings of the disc displacement and the radius of the wetted area reveal that the latter does not change before the disc acceleration reaches its maximum value. We show in this paper that these phenomena are caused by the elastic deflection of the disc during the initial transient stage of water exit. We present a linearised model of water exit that accounts for the elastic behaviour of the lifted body. The results obtained with this new model agree fairly well with the experimental results.

Many physical problems can be modelled by partial differential equations on unknown domains. Several examples can easily be found in the dynamics of free interfaces in fluid dynamics, solid mechanics or in fluid-solid interactions. To solve these equations in an arbitrary domain with nonlinear deformations, we propose a mathematical approach allowing to track the boundary of the domain, analogue of, and complementary to, the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) method for the interior of the domain. We name this method as the Boundary Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (BALE) method. Additionally, in many situations nonlinear deformations can be avoided with the help of some analyses which rely on small deformations of the boundary, such as stability analysis, asymptotic expansion and gradient-based shape optimisation. For these cases, we propose an approach to perturb the domain and its boundaries and write the partial differential equations at the unperturbed domain together with the boundary conditions at the unperturbed boundary, instead of at the perturbed ones, which are a priori unknown. We name this method as the Deformable Boundary Perturbation (DBP) method. These two proposed methods rely on the boundary exterior differential operator, whose relevant properties for the present work are evidenced. This work focuses on the dissolution of a train of unconfined bubbles in cylindrical microchannels. We investigate how the mass transfer is affected by the channel and bubble sizes, distance between bubbles, diffusivity, superficial velocity, deformation of the bubble, the presence of surfactants in the limit of rigid interface and off-centred positions of the bubbles. We analyse the influence of the dimensionless numbers and especially the distance between bubbles and the P\'eclet number, Pe, which we vary among eight decades and identify five different dissolution regimes. We show different concentration patterns and the dependence of the Sherwood numbers, Sh. These regimes can be classified by either the importance of the streamline diffusion or by the interaction between bubbles. For small Pe the streamline diffusion is not negligible as compared to convection whereas for large Pe, convection dominates in the streamline direction and, thus, crosswind diffusion becomes crucial in governing the dissolution through boundary layers or of the remaining wake behind the bubbles. Bubbles interaction takes place for very small Pe for which the dissolution is purely diffusive or for very large Pe numbers in which case long wakes eventually reach the following bubble. We also observe that the bubble deformability mainly affects the Sh in the regime for very large Pe in which bubbles interaction matters, and also that the rigid interface effect affects the boundary layer and the remaining wake. The effect of off-centred position of the bubble, determined by the transverse force balance, is also limited to large Pe. The boundary layers in rigid bubble surfaces are thicker as compared to those on stress-free bubble surface and, thus, the dissolution is smaller. Graph anticoloring problem is partial coloring problem where the main feature is the opposite rule of the graph coloring problem, i.e., if two vertices are adjacent, their assigned colors must be the same or at least one of them is uncolored. The translation of a bubble under the action of an acoustic forcing finds applications in fields ranging from drug delivery to sonoluminesce. This phenomenon has been widely studied for cases where the amplitude of the forcing remains constant over time. However, in many practical applications, the duration of the forcing is not long enough for the bubble to attain a constant translational velocity, mainly due to the effect of the history force. Here, we develop a formulation, valid in the limit of very viscous flow and small-amplitude acoustic forcing, that allows us to describe the transient dynamics of bubbles driven by acoustic pulses consisting of a finite number of cycles. We also present an asymptotic solution to this theory for the case of a finite-duration sinusoidal pressure pulse. This solution takes into account both the history integral term and the transient period that the bubble needs to achieve steady radial oscillations, being the former dominant during most of the acceleration process. Moreover, by introducing some additional assumptions, we derive a simplified formula that describes fairly well the time evolution of the bubble velocity. Using this solution we show that the convergence to the steady translational velocity, given by the so-called Bjerknes force, occurs rather slowly, namely as $\tau^{-1/2}$, which explains the slow convergence of the bubble velocity and stresses the importance of taking into account the history force.

This work focuses on the dynamics of a train of unconfined bubbles flowing in microchan- nels. We investigate the transverse position of a train of bubbles, its velocity and the associated pressure drop when flowing in a microchannel depending on the internal forces due to viscosity, inertia and capillarity. Despite the small scales of the system, inertia, referred to as inertial migration force, play a crucial role in determining the transverse equilibrium position of the bubbles. Beside inertia and viscosity, other effects may also affect the transverse migration of bubbles such as the Marangoni surface stresses and the surface deformability. We look at the influence of surfactants in the limit of infinite Marangoni effect which yields rigid bubble interface. The resulting migration force may balance external body forces if present such as buoyancy, Dean or magnetic ones. This balance not only determines the transverse position of the bubbles but, consequently, the surrounding flow structure, which can be determinant for any mass/heat transfer process involved. Finally, we look at the influence of the bubble deformation on the equilibrium position and compare it to the inertial migration force at the centred position, explaining the stable or unstable character of this position accordingly. A systematic study of the influence of the parameters - such as the bubble size, uniform body force, Reynolds and capillary numbers - has been carried out using numerical simulations based on the Finite Element Method, solving the full steady Navier-Stokes equations and its asymptotic counterpart for the limits of small Reynolds and/or capillary numbers., Comment: Submitted to JFM

The accurate description of the growth or dissolution dynamics of a soluble gas bubble in a super- or undersaturated solution requires taking into account a number of physical effects that contribute to the instantaneous mass transfer rate. One of these effects is the so-called history effect. It refers to the contribution of the local concentration boundary layer around the bubble that has developed from past mass transfer events between the bubble and liquid surroundings. In Part 1 of this work \citep{penas2016}, a theoretical treatment of this effect was given for a spherical, isolated bubble. Here, Part 2 provides an experimental and numerical study of the history effect regarding a spherical bubble attached to a horizontal flat plate and in the presence of gravity. The simulation technique developed in this paper is based on a streamfunction--vorticity formulation that may be applied to other flows where bubbles or drops exchange mass in the presence of a gravity field. Using this numerical tool, simulations are performed for the same conditions used in the experiments, in which the bubble is exposed to subsequent growth and dissolution stages, using step-wise variations in the ambient pressure. Besides proving the relevance of the history effect, the simulations highlight the importance that boundary-induced advection has to accurately describe bubble growth and shrinkage, i.e. the bubble radius evolution. In addition, natural convection has a significant influence that shows up in the velocity field even at short times, though, given the supersaturation conditions studied here, the bubble evolution is expected to be mainly diffusive.

The term `history effect' refers to the contribution of any past mass transfer events between a gas bubble and its liquid surroundings towards the current diffusion-driven growth or dissolution dynamics of that same bubble. The history effect arises from the (non-instantaneous) development of the dissolved gas concentration boundary layer in the liquid in response to changes in the concentration at the bubble interface caused, for instance, by variations of the ambient pressure in time. Essentially, the history effect amounts to the acknowledgement that at any given time the mass flux across the bubble is conditioned by the preceding time-history of the concentration at the bubble boundary. Considering the canonical problem of an isolated spherical bubble at rest, we show that the contribution of the history effect in the current interfacial concentration gradient is fully contained within a memory integral of the interface concentration. Retaining this integral term, we formulate a governing differential equation for the bubble dynamics, analogous to the well-known Epstein-Plesset solution. Our equation does not make use of the quasi-static radius approximation. An analytical solution is presented for the case of multiple step-like jumps in pressure. The nature and relevance of the history effect is then assessed through illustrative examples. Finally, we investigate the role of the history effect in rectified diffusion for a bubble that pulsates under harmonic pressure forcing in the non-inertial, isothermal regime.

The diffusion-driven growth of a foam ball is a phenomenon that appears in many manufacturing process as well as in a variety of geological phenomena. Usually these processes are greatly affected by gravity, as foam is much lighter than the surrounding liquid. However, the growth of the foam free of gravity effects is still very relevant, as it is connected to manufacturing in space and to the forma- tion of rocks in meteorites and other small celestial bodies. The aim of this research is to investigate experimentally the growth of a bubble cloud growing in a gas-supersaturated liquid in microgravity conditions. Here, we describe the ex- periments carried out in the drop tower of the Center of Ap- plied Space Technology and Microgravity (ZARM). In few words, a foam seed is formed with spark-induced cavitation in carbonated water, whose time evolution is recorded with two high-speed cameras. Our preliminary results shed some light on how the size of the foam ball scales with time, in particular at times much longer than what could be studied in normal conditions, i.e. on the surface of the Earth, where the dynamics of the foam is already dominated by gravity after several milliseconds.

The number of documents available into Internet moves each day up. For this reason, processing this amount of information effectively and expressibly becomes a major concern for companies and scientists. Methods that represent a textual document by a topic representation are widely used in Information Retrieval (IR) to process big data such as Wikipedia articles. One of the main difficulty in using topic model on huge data collection is related to the material resources (CPU time and memory) required for model estimate. To deal with this issue, we propose to build topic spaces from summarized documents. In this paper, we present a study of topic space representation in the context of big data. The topic space representation behavior is analyzed on different languages. Experiments show that topic spaces estimated from text summaries are as relevant as those estimated from the complete documents. The real advantage of such an approach is the processing time gain: we showed that the processing time can be drastically reduced using summarized documents (more than 60\% in general). This study finally points out the differences between thematic representations of documents depending on the targeted languages such as English or latin languages., Comment: 16 pages, 4 tables, 8 figures

An electrified visco-capillary jet shows different dynamic behavior, such as cone forming, breakage into droplets, whipping and coiling, depending on the considered parameter regime. The whipping instability that is of fundamental importance for electrospinning has been approached by means of stability analysis in previous papers. In this work we alternatively propose a model framework in which the instability can be computed straightforwardly as the stable stationary solution of an asymptotic Cosserat rod description. For this purpose, we adopt a procedure by Ribe (Proc. Roy. Soc. Lond. A, 2004) describing the jet dynamics with respect to a frame rotating with the a priori unknown whipping frequency that itself becomes part of the solution. The rod model allows for stretching, bending and torsion, taking into account inertia, viscosity, surface tension, electric field and air drag. For the resulting parametric boundary value problem of ordinary differential equations we present a continuation-collocation method. On top of an implicit Runge-Kutta scheme of fifth order, our developed continuation procedure makes the efficient and robust simulation and navigation through a high-dimensional parameter space possible. Despite the simplicity of the employed electric force model the numerical results are convincing, the whipping effect is qualitatively well characterized.

The main results in this thesis deal with the representation growth of certain classes of groups. In chapter $1$ we present the required preliminary theory. In chapter $2$ we introduce the Congruence Subgroup Problem for an algebraic group $G$ defined over a global field $k$. In chapter $3$ we consider $\Gamma=G(\mathcal{O}_S)$ an arithmetic subgroup of a semisimple algebraic $k$-group for some global field $k$ with ring of $S$-integers $\mathcal{O}_S$. If the Lie algebra of $G$ is perfect, Lubotzky and Martin showed that if $\Gamma$ has the weak Congruence Subgroup Property then $\Gamma$ has Polynomial Representation Growth, that is, $r_n(\Gamma)\leq p(n)$ for some polynomial $p$. By using a different approach, we show that the same holds for any semisimple algebraic group $G$ including those with a non-perfect Lie algebra. In chapter $4$ we show that if $\Gamma$ has the weak Congruence Subgroup Property then $s_n(\Gamma)\leq n^{D\log n}$ for some constant $D$, where $s_n(\Gamma)$ denotes the number of subgroups of $\Gamma$ of index at most $n$. In chapter $5$ we consider $\Gamma=1+J$, where $J$ is a finite nilpotent associative algebra, this is called an algebra group. We provide counterexamples for any prime $p$ for the Fake Degree Conjecture by looking at groups of the form $\Gamma=1+I_{\mathbb{F}_q}$, where $I_{\mathbb{F}_q}$ is the augmentation ideal of the group algebra $\mathbb{F}_q[\pi]$ for some $p$-group $\pi$. Moreover, we show that for such groups $r_1(\Gamma)=q^{K(\pi)-1}|B_0(\pi)|$, where $B_0(\pi)$ is the Bogomolov multiplier of $\pi$. Finally in chapter $6$, we consider $\Gamma=\prod_{i\in I} S_i$, where the $S_i$ are nonabelian finite simple group. We show that within this class one can obtain any rate of representation growth, i.e., for any $\alpha>0$ there exists $\Gamma=\prod_{i\in I}S_i$ such that $r_n(\Gamma)\sim n^\alpha$., Comment: Ph.D. Thesis of the author

We study the relaxation dynamics and intersystem-crossing to the metastable state in laser-pumped tetra and hexa-coordinated nickel porphyrins. We use a ligand-field model which takes into account the crystal field created by the porphyrin ring and axial ligands. By accounting for the energy redistribution of the lattice vibrations of the metal-ligand stretch mode we get an irreversible decay within the order of the hundreds of femtoseconds timescale. We show how non-equilibrium time-dependent x-ray absorption atthe Ni K-edge measurements can elucidate the nature of the intermediate states involved in the decay. Understanding radiationless transitions in this system is of interest for their relevance in photocatalytic systems and photothermal sensitizers for cancer treatment.

We discuss the calculation of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) with Xclaim, a multi-plaform code for the calculation of core-hole spectroscopy based on a ligand-field multiplet model. RIXS can be calcuated with a ligand-field model with ligands for the L$_{2,3}$, M$_{2,3}$, $K_{\alpha}$ and $K_{\beta}$ edges for $d$-valence metals. In addition, the program brings the possibility of fully diagonalizing the hamiltonian to classify the excited states. The command line use of xclaim is described for scripting purposes to help in automatizing the results that can be obtained with the graphical interface.

Let $\pi$ be a finite $p$-group and $\mathbb{F}_q$ a finite field with $q=p^n$ elements. Denote by $\mathrm{I}_{\mathbb{F}_q}$ the augmentation ideal of the group ring $\mathbb{F}_q[\pi]$. We have found a surprising relation between the abelianization of $1+\mathrm{I}_{\mathbb{F}_q}$, the Bogomolov multiplier $\mathrm{B}_0(\pi)$ of $\pi$ and the number of conjugacy classes $\mathrm{k}(\pi)$ of $\pi$: \[ | (1+\mathrm{I}_{\mathbb{F}_q})_{\mathrm{ab}} |=q^{\mathrm{k}(\pi)-1}|\mathrm{B}_0(\pi)|. \] In particular, if $\pi$ is a finite $p$-group with a non-trivial Bogomolov multiplier, then $1+\mathrm{I}_{\mathbb{F}_q}$ is a counterexample to the fake degree conjecture proposed by M. Xclaim (x-ray core level atomic multiplets) is a graphical interface for the calculation of core-hole spectroscopy and ground state properties within a charge-transfer multiplet model taking into account a many-body hamiltonian with Coulomb, spin-orbit, crystal-field, and hybridization interactions. Using Hartree-Fock estimates for the Coulomb and spin-orbit interactions and ligand field parameters (crystal-field, hybridization and charge-transfer energy) the program can calculate x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), photoemission spectrospcy (PES) and inverse photoemission (IPES) for d- and f-valence metals and different absorption edges. The program runs in Linux, Windows and MacOS platforms.

We calculate the angular dependence of the x-ray linear and circular dichroism at the $L_{2,3}$ edges of $\alpha$-Fe(II) Phthalocyanine (FePc) thin films using a ligand field model with full configuration interaction. We find the best agreement with the experimental spectra for a mixed ground state of $^3E_{g}(a_{1g}^2e_g^3b_{2g}^1)$ and $^3B_{2g}(a_{1g}^1e_g^4b_{2g}^1)$ with the two configurations coupled by the spin-orbit interaction. The $^3E_{g}(b)$ and $^3B_{2g}$ states have an easy axis and plane anisotropies, respectively. Our model accounts for an easy-plane magnetic anisotropy and the measured magnitudes of the in-plane orbital and spin moments. The proximity in energy of the two configurations allows a switching of the magnetic anisotropy from easy plane to easy axis with a small change in the crystal field, as recently observed for FePc adsorbed on an oxidized Cu surface. We also discuss the possibility of a quintet ground state ($^5A_{1g}$ is 250~meV above the ground state) with planar anisotropy by manipulation of the Fe-C bond length by depositing the complex on a substrate that is subjected to a mechanical strain.

The popular bar prank known in colloquial English as beer tapping consists in hitting the top of a beer bottle with a solid object, usually another bottle, to trigger the foaming over of the former within a few seconds. Despite the trick being known for long time, to the best of our knowledge, the phenomenon still lacks scientific explanation. Although it seems natural to think that shock-induced cavitation enhances the diffusion of CO$_2$ from the supersaturated bulk liquid into the bubbles by breaking them up, the subtle mechanism by which this happens remains unknown. Here we show that the overall foaming-over process can be divided into three stages where different physical phenomena take place in different time-scales, namely: bubble-collapse (or cavitation) stage, diffusion-driven stage and buoyancy-driven stage. In the bubble-collapse stage, the impact generates a train of expansion-compression waves in the liquid that leads to the fragmentation of pre-existing gas cavities. Upon bubble fragmentation, the sudden increase of the interface-area-to-volume ratio enhances mass transfer significantly, which makes the bubble volume grow by a large factor until CO$_2$ is locally depleted. At that point buoyancy takes over, making the bubble clouds rise and eventually form buoyant vortex rings whose volume grows fast due to the feedback between the buoyancy-induced rising speed and the advection-enhanced CO$_2$ transport from the bulk liquid to the bubble. A sudden vertical impact on the mouth of a beer bottle generates a compression wave that propagates through the glass towards the bottom. When this wave reaches the base of the bottle, it is transmitted to the liquid as an expansion wave that travels to free surface, where it bounces back as a compression wave. This train of expansion-compression waves drives the forced cavitation of existing air pockets, leading to their violent collapse. A cloud of very small daughter bubbles are generated upon these collapses, that expand much faster than their mothers due to their smaller size. These rapidly growing bubble clusters effectively act as buoyancy sources, what leads to the formation of bubble-laden plumes whose void fraction increases quickly by several orders of magnitude, eventually turning most of the liquid into foam., Comment: This submission includes 2 movies for the APS / DFD Gallery of Fluid Motion 2013

A systematic analysis of resonant x-ray Bragg diffraction data for UPd$_3$, with signal enhancement at the U M$_{IV}$ edge, including possible structural phase-transitions leads to a new determination of the space groups of the material in the phases between $T_0 = 7.8$ K and $T_{+1}$ = 6.9 K as P222$_1$ and between $T_{-1}$ = 6.7 K and $T_{2}$ = 4.4 K as space group P2$_1$. In addition, the quadrupolar order-parameters, $$, inferred from diffraction data in the phase between $T_{-1}$ and $T_{2}$, are $$ and $$ at the (103) Bragg reflection, and $$ at the (104) reflection., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

The effect of doping on the electronic structure at the Mn sites in the La_{1-x}Sr_{1+x}MnO_4 series (x=0, 0.3 and 0.5) was studied by means of non-resonant hard X- ray emission spectroscopy (XES). We observe a linear dichroism in the Mn K-beta main lines (3p to 1s transitions) that is strongest for x=0 and decreases with increasing x to 0.5. The Mn K-beta main lines in the poly-crystalline samples change considerably less upon increasing the hole doping (substitution of La by Sr) than it would be expected based on the change of formal valence. From this we conclude that the charge and spin density at the Mn sites are only little affected by doping. This implies that holes injected in the La_{1-x}Sr_{1+x}MnO_4 series mainly result in a decrease of charge density on the oxygen atoms, i.e. oxygen takes part in the charge balancing. These findings are supported by many-body cluster calculations.

The dependence with energy of the resonant soft x-ray Bragg diffraction intensity in DyB$_2$C$_2$ for the $(00{1/2})$ reflection at the Dy M$_{4,5}$ edges have been calculated by using an atomic multiplet hamiltonian including the effect of crystal field and introducing an intra-atomic quadrupolar interaction between the 3d core and 4f valence shell. These calculations are compared with the experimental results (Mulders et al., J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 18 (2006) 11195) in the antiferroquadrupolar and antiferromagnetic phases of DyB$_2$C$_2$. We reproduce all the features appearing $(00{1/2})$ reflection energy profile in the antiferroquadrupolar ordered phase, and we reproduce the behaviour of the resonant x-ray scattering intensity at different energies in the vicinity of the Dy M$_5$ edge when the temperature is lowered within the antiferromagnetic phase.

Structural and dynamical characteristics pertaining to the solvation of an excess proton in liquid-like nanoclusters of the type [H$_2$O]$_n$ are investigated using Molecular Dynamics experiments. Three different aggregate sizes were analyzed: $n=10,$ 21 and 125. The simulation experiments were performed using a multistate empirical valence bond Hamiltonian model. While in the smallest aggregates the proton occupies a central position, the stable solvation environments for $n=21$ and 125 are located at the cluster boundaries. In all cases, the structure of the closest solvation shell of the excess charge remains practically unchanged and coincides with that observed in bulk water. Compared to results obtained in bulk, the computed rates for proton transfer in clusters are between one and two orders of magnitude slower, and tend to increase for larger cluster sizes., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, to be published in Journal of Molecular Liquids, EMLG2006 special issue
