We study $D=11$ supergravity solutions which are dual to one-dimensional superconformal defects in $d=3$ SCFTs. We consider defects in ABJM theory with monodromy for $U(1)^4\subset SO(8)$ global symmetry, as well as in $\mathcal{N}=2$ mABJM SCFT, which arises from the RG flow of a mass deformation of ABJM theory, with monodromy for $U(1)^3\subset SU(3)\times U(1)$ global symmetry. We show that the defects of the two SCFTs are connected by a line of bulk marginal mass deformations and argue that they are also related by bulk RG flow. In all cases we allow for the possibility of conical singularities at the location of the defect. We study type IIB supergravity solutions that are dual to two-dimensional superconformal defects in $d=4$ SCFTs which preserve $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ supersymmetry. We consider solutions dual to defects in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory that have non-trivial monodromy for $U(1)^3\subset SO(6)$ global symmetry and we also allow for the possibility of conical singularities. In addition, we consider the addition of fermionic and bosonic mass terms that have non trivial dependence on the spatial directions transverse to the defect, while preserving the superconformal symmetry of the defect. We compute various physical quantities including the central charges of the defect expressed as a function of the monodromy, the on-shell action as well as associated supersymmetric Renyi entropies. Analogous computations are carried out for superconformal defects in the $\mathcal{N}=1$, $d=4$ Leigh-Strassler SCFT. We show that in-context learning emerges in transformers in discrete developmental stages, when they are trained on either language modeling or linear regression tasks. We introduce two methods for detecting the milestones that separate these stages, by probing the geometry of the population loss in both parameter space and function space. We study the stages revealed by these new methods using a range of behavioral and structural metrics to establish their validity.

The infinite-parent spatial Lambda-Fleming-Viot (SLFV) process is a model of random growth, in which a set evolves by the addition of balls according to points of an underlying Poisson point process, and which was recently introduced to study genetic diversity in spatially expanding populations. In this article, we give asymptotics for the location and depth of the moving interface, and identify the exact asymptotic scale of the transverse fluctuations of geodesics. Our proofs are based on a new representation of the infinite-parent SLFV in terms of chains of reproduction events, and on the study of the properties of a typical geodesic. Moreover, we show that our representation coincides with the alternative definitions of the process considered in the literature, subject to a simple condition on the initial state. To better understand complexity in neural networks, we theoretically investigate the idealised phenomenon of lossless network compressibility, whereby an identical function can be implemented with fewer hidden units. In the setting of single-hidden-layer hyperbolic tangent networks, we define the rank of a parameter as the minimum number of hidden units required to implement the same function. We give efficient formal algorithms for optimal lossless compression and computing the rank of a parameter. Losslessly compressible parameters are atypical, but their existence has implications for nearby parameters. We define the proximate rank of a parameter as the rank of the most compressible parameter within a small L-infinity neighbourhood. We give an efficient greedy algorithm for bounding the proximate rank of a parameter, and show that the problem of tightly bounding the proximate rank is NP-complete. We consider the tight-binding model of graphene with slowly spatially varying hopping functions. We develop a low energy approximation as a derivative expansion in a Dirac spinor that is perturbative in the hopping function deformation. The leading description is the Dirac equation in flat 2+1-d spacetime with (strain-)gauge field. Prior work considered subleading corrections written as non-trivial frame and spin connection terms. We previously argued that such corrections cannot be considered consistently without taking all the terms at the same order of approximation, which due to the unconventional power counting originating from the large gauge field, involve also higher covariant derivative terms. Here we confirm this, explicitly computing subleading terms. To the order we explore, the theory is elegantly determined by the gauge field and frame, both given by the hopping functions, the torsion free spin connection of the frame, together with coefficients for the higher derivative terms derived from lattice invariants. For the first time we compute the metric that the Dirac field sees - the `electrometric' - to quadratic order in the deformation allowing us to describe the subleading corrections to the dispersion relation for inhomogeneous deformations originating from corrections to the frame. Focussing on in-plane inhomogeneous strain, we use a simple model to relate the hopping functions to the strain field, finding the electrometric becomes curved at this quadratic order. Thus this lattice model yields an effective analog gravity description as a curved space Dirac theory, with large magnetic field, and Lorentz violating higher covariant derivative terms. We check this by comparison to numerical diagonalization. Understanding the learning process of artificial neural networks requires clarifying the structure of the parameter space within which learning takes place. A neural network parameter's functional equivalence class is the set of parameters implementing the same input--output function. For many architectures, almost all parameters have a simple and well-documented functional equivalence class. However, there is also a vanishing minority of reducible parameters, with richer functional equivalence classes caused by redundancies among the network's units. In this paper, we give an algorithmic characterisation of unit redundancies and reducible functional equivalence classes for a single-hidden-layer hyperbolic tangent architecture. We show that such functional equivalence classes are piecewise-linear path-connected sets, and that for parameters with a majority of redundant units, the sets have a diameter of at most 7 linear segments., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures

In recent years we have explored using Haskell alongside a traditional mathematical formalism in our large-enrolment university course on topics including logic and formal languages, aiming to offer our students a programming perspective on these mathematical topics. We have found it possible to offer almost all formative and summative assessment through an interactive learning platform, using Haskell as a lingua franca for digital exercises across our broad syllabus. One of the hardest exercises to convert into this format are traditional written proofs conveying constructive arguments. In this paper we reflect on the digitisation of this kind of exercise. We share many examples of Haskell exercises designed to target similar skills to written proof exercises across topics in propositional logic and formal languages, discussing various aspects of the design of such exercises. We also catalogue a sample of student responses to such exercises. We construct a new class of supersymmetric $AdS_3\times Y_7$ solutions of type IIB supergravity, where $Y_7$ is an $S^5$ fibration over a spindle, which are dual to $d=2$, $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ SCFTs. The solutions are constructed in a sub-truncation of $D=5$, $SO(6)$ maximal gauged supergravity and they all lie within the anti-twist class. We show that the central charge computed from the gravity solutions agrees with an anomaly polynomial calculation associated with compactifying the $\mathcal{N}=1$, $d=4$ Leigh-Strassler SCFT on a spindle., Comment: 55 pages, 2 figures. It is often very challenging to manually design reward functions for complex, real-world tasks. To solve this, one can instead use reward learning to infer a reward function from data. However, there are often multiple reward functions that fit the data equally well, even in the infinite-data limit. This means that the reward function is only partially identifiable. In this work, we formally characterise the partial identifiability of the reward function given several popular reward learning data sources, including expert demonstrations and trajectory comparisons. We also analyse the impact of this partial identifiability for several downstream tasks, such as policy optimisation. Undistorted monolayer graphene has energy bands which cross at protected Dirac points. It elastically deforms and much research has assumed the Dirac description persists, now in a curved space and coupled to a gauge field related to lattice strain. We show this is incorrect by using a real space gradient expansion to study how the Dirac equation derives from the tight binding model. Generic spatially varying hopping functions give rise to large magnetic fields which spoil the truncation in derivatives. In the perturbative regime, the only consistent truncation to Dirac is one with nontrivial gauge field but in flat space. One can instead fine tune the magnetic field to be small, and we derive the resulting differential condition that the hopping functions must satisfy to yield a consistent truncation to Dirac in curved space. We construct a continuous one parameter family of $AdS_4\times S^1\times S^5$ S-fold solutions of type IIB string theory which have nontrivial $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ monodromy in the $S^1$ direction. The solutions span a subset of a conformal manifold that contains the known $\mathcal{N}=4$ S-fold SCFT in $d=3$, and generically preserve $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry. We also construct RG flows across dimensions, from $AdS_5\times S^5$, dual to $\mathcal{N}=4$, $d=4$ SYM compactified with a twisted spatial circle, to various $AdS_4\times S^1\times S^5$ S-fold solutions, dual to $d=3$ SCFTs. We define a spatially-dependent fragmentation process, which involves rectangles breaking up into progressively smaller pieces at rates that depend on their shape. Long, thin rectangles are more likely to break quickly, and are also more likely to split along their longest side. We are interested in how the system evolves over time: how many fragments are there of different shapes and sizes, and how did they reach that state? Our theorem gives an almost sure growth rate along paths, which does not match the growth rate in expectation - there are paths where the expected number of fragments of that shape and size is exponentially large, but in reality no such fragments exist at large times almost surely., Comment: 67 pages, 3 figures. The $N$-particle branching random walk is a discrete time branching particle system with selection. We have $N$ particles located on the real line at all times. At every time step each particle is replaced by two offspring, and each offspring particle makes a jump of non-negative size from its parent's location, independently from the other jumps, according to a given jump distribution. Then only the $N$ rightmost particles survive; the other particles are removed from the system to keep the population size constant. Inspired by work of J. B\'erard and P. Maillard, we examine the long term behaviour of this particle system in the case where the jump distribution has regularly varying tails and the number of particles is large. We prove that at a typical large time the genealogy of the population is given by a star-shaped coalescent, and that almost the whole population is near the leftmost particle on the relevant space scale., Comment: 64 pages, 2 figures

We construct infinite new classes of $AdS_4\times S^1\times S^5$ solutions of type IIB string theory which have non-trivial $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ monodromy along the $S^1$ direction. The solutions are supersymmetric and holographically dual, generically, to $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFTs in $d=3$. The solutions are first constructed as $AdS_4\times \mathbb{R}$ solutions in $D=5$ $SO(6)$ gauged supergravity and then uplifted to $D=10$. Unlike the known $AdS_4\times \mathbb{R}$ S-fold solutions, there is no continuous symmetry associated with the $\mathbb{R}$ direction. The solutions all arise as limiting cases of Janus solutions of $d=4$, $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory which are supported both by a different value of the coupling constant on either side of the interface, as well as by fermion and boson mass deformations. As special cases, the construction recovers three known S-fold constructions, preserving $\mathcal{N}=1,2$ and 4 supersymmetry, as well as a recently constructed $\mathcal{N}=1$ $AdS_4\times S^1\times S^5$ solution (not S-folded). We consider the near-critical Erd\H{o}s-R\'{e}nyi random graph $G(n,p)$ and provide a new probabilistic proof of the fact that, when $p$ is of the form $p=p(n)=1/n+\lambda/n^{4/3}$ and $A$ is large, \[\mathbb{P}(|\mathcal{C}_{\max}|>An^{2/3})\asymp A^{-3/2}e^{-\frac{A^3}{8}+\frac{\lambda A^2}{2}-\frac{\lambda^2A}{2}}\] where $\mathcal{C}_{\max}$ is the largest connected component of the graph. We study mass deformations of $\mathcal{N}=4$, $d=4$ SYM theory that are spatially modulated in one spatial dimension and preserve some residual supersymmetry. We focus on generalisations of $\mathcal{N}=1^*$ theories and show that it is also possible, for suitably chosen supersymmetric masses, to preserve $d=3$ conformal symmetry associated with a co-dimension one interface. Holographic solutions can be constructed using $D=5$ theories of gravity that arise from consistent truncations of $SO(6)$ gauged supergravity and hence type IIB supergravity. For the mass deformations that preserve $d=3$ superconformal symmetry we construct a rich set of Janus solutions of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory which have the same coupling constant on either side of the interface. Limiting classes of these solutions give rise to RG interface solutions with $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM on one side of the interface and the Leigh-Strassler (LS) SCFT on the other, and also to a Janus solution for the LS theory. We construct gravitational solutions that holographically describe two different $d=4$ SCFTs joined together at a co-dimension one, planar RG interface and preserving $d=3$ superconformal symmetry. The RG interface joins $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory on one side with the $\mathcal{N}=1$ Leigh-Strassler SCFT on the other. We construct a family of such solutions, which in general are associated with spatially dependent mass deformations on the $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM side, but there is a particular solution for which these deformations vanish. We also construct a Janus solution with the Leigh-Strassler SCFT on either side of the interface. Motivated by the goal of understanding the evolution of populations undergoing selection, we consider branching Brownian motion in which particles independently move according to one-dimensional Brownian motion with drift, each particle may either split into two or die, and the difference between the birth and death rates is a linear function of the position of the particle. We show that, under certain assumptions, after a sufficiently long time, the empirical distribution of the positions of the particles is approximately Gaussian. This provides mathematically rigorous justification for results in the biology literature indicating that the distribution of the fitness levels of individuals in a population over time evolves like a Gaussian traveling wave., Comment: 83 pages

We construct new families of deformed supersymmetric field theories which break space-time symmetries but preserve half of the original supersymmetry. We do this by writing deformations as couplings to background multiplets. In many cases it is important to use the off-shell representation as auxiliary fields of the non-dynamical fields must be turned on to preserve supersymmetry. We also consider backgrounds which preserve some superconformal symmetry, finding scale-invariant field profiles, as well as $\mathcal{N} =2$ theories on $S^3$. We define a dynamical simple symmetric random walk in one dimension, and show that there almost surely exist exceptional times at which the walk tends to infinity. This is in contrast to the usual dynamical simple symmetric random walk in one dimension, for which such exceptional times are known not to exist. In fact we show that the set of exceptional times has Hausdorff dimension $1/2$ almost surely, and give bounds on the rate at which the walk diverges at such times. We also show noise sensitivity of the event that our random walk is positive after $n$ steps. In fact this event is maximally noise sensitive, in the sense that it is quantitatively noise sensitive for any sequence $\varepsilon_n$ such that $n\varepsilon_n\to\infty$. Let $T$ be the regular tree in which every vertex has exactly $d\ge 3$ neighbours. We construct supersymmetric solutions of $D=11$ supergravity, preserving 1/4 of the supersymmetry, that are holographically dual to ABJM theory which has been deformed by spatially varying mass terms depending on one of the two spatial directions. We consider real mass and FI deformations of ABJM theory preserving supersymmetry in the large $N$ limit, and compare with holographic results. On the field theory side, the problems amounts to a spectral problem of a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. For certain values of the deformation parameters this is invariant under an antiunitary operator (generalised $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry), which ensures the partition function remains real and allows us to calculate the free energy using tools from statistical physics. The results obtained are compatible with previous work, the important new feature being that these are obtained directly from the real deformations, without analytic continuation., Comment: 21 pages, 3 figures

We study fractional quantum Hall states at filling fractions in the Jain sequences using the framework of composite Dirac fermions. Synthesizing previous work, we write down an effective field theory consistent with all symmetry requirements, including Galilean invariance and particle-hole symmetry. Employing a Fermi liquid description, we demonstrate the appearance of the Girvin--Macdonlald--Platzman algebra and compute the dispersion relation of neutral excitations and various response functions. Our results satisfy requirements of particle-hole symmetry. We show that while the dispersion relation obtained from the HLR theory is particle-hole symmetric, correlation functions obtained from HLR are not. The results of the Dirac theory are shown to be consistent with the Haldane bound on the projected structure factor, while those of the HLR theory violate it., Comment: 32 pages, 3 figures

We construct an action for the composite Dirac fermion consistent with symmetries of electrons projected to the lowest Landau level. First we construct a generalization of the $g=2$ electron that gives a smooth massless limit on any curved background. Using the symmetries of the microscopic electron theory in this massless limit we find a number of constraints on any low-energy effective theory. We find that any low-energy description must couple to a geometry which exhibits nontrivial curvature even on flat space-times. Any composite fermion must have an electric dipole moment proportional and orthogonal to the composite fermion's wavevector. Take a continuous-time Galton-Watson tree. If the system survives until a large time $T$, then choose $k$ particles uniformly from those alive. What does the ancestral tree drawn out by these $k$ particles look like? Some special cases are known but we give a more complete answer. We concentrate on near-critical cases where the mean number of offspring is $1+\mu/T$ for some $\mu\in\mathbb{R}$, and show that a scaling limit exists as $T\to\infty$. Viewed backwards in time, the resulting coalescent process is topologically equivalent to Kingman's coalescent, but the times of coalescence have an interesting and highly non-trivial structure. The randomly fluctuating population size, as opposed to constant size populations where the Kingman coalescent more usually arises, have a pronounced effect on both the results and the method of proof required. We give explicit formulas for the distribution of the coalescent times, as well as a construction of the genealogical tree involving a mixture of independent and identically distributed random variables. In this paper we introduce a network model which evolves in time, and study its largest connected component. We consider a process of graphs $(G_t:t\in [0,1])$, where initially we start with a critical Erd\H{o}s-R\'enyi graph ER(n, 1/n), and then evolve forwards in time by resampling each edge independently at rate 1. We show that the size of the largest connected component that appears during the time interval $[0, 1]$ is of order $n^{2/3} log^{1/3} n$ with high probability. The largest components of the critical Erd\H{o}s-R\'enyi graph, $G(n,p)$ with $p=1/n$, have size of order $n^{2/3}$ with high probability. For theories of relativistic matter fields there exist two possible definitions of the stress-energy tensor, one defined by a variation of the action with the coframes at fixed connection, and the other at fixed torsion. These two stress-energy tensors do not necessarily coincide and it is the latter that corresponds to the Cauchy stress measured in the lab. In this note we discuss the corresponding issue for non-relativistic matter theories. We point out that while the physical non-relativistic stress, momentum, and mass currents are defined by a variation of the action at fixed torsion, the energy current does not admit such a description and is naturally defined at fixed connection. Any attempt to define an energy current at fixed torsion results in an ambiguity which cannot be resolved from the background spacetime data or conservation laws. We construct effective field theories for gapped quantum Hall systems coupled to background geometries with local Galilean invariance i.e. Bargmann spacetimes. Along with an electromagnetic field, these backgrounds include the effects of curved Galilean spacetimes, including torsion and a gravitational field, allowing us to study charge, energy, stress and mass currents within a unified framework. We consider a branching random walk on the lattice, where the branching rates are given by an i.i.d. Pareto random potential. We show a very strong form of intermittency, where with high probability most of the mass of the system is concentrated in a single site with high potential. The analogous one-point localization is already known for the parabolic Anderson model, which describes the expected number of particles in the same system. We consider a branching random walk on the lattice, where the branching rates are given by an i.i.d. Pareto random potential. We show that the system of particles, rescaled in an appropriate way, converges in distribution to a scaling limit that is interesting in its own right. We describe the limit object as a growing collection of "lilypads" built on a Poisson point process in $\mathbb{R}^d$. Fractional quantum Hall liquids exhibit a rich set of excitations, the lowest-energy of which are the magnetorotons with dispersion minima at a finite momentum. We propose a theory of the magnetorotons on the quantum Hall plateaux near half filling, namely, at filling fractions $\nu=N/(2N+1)$ at large $N$. The theory involves an infinite number of bosonic fields arising from bosonizing the fluctuations of the shape of the composite Fermi surface. At zero momentum there are $O(N)$ neutral excitations, each carrying a well-defined spin that runs integer values $2,3,\ldots$. The mixing of modes at nonzero momentum $q$ leads to the characteristic bending down of the lowest excitation and the appearance of the magnetoroton minima. A purely algebraic argument shows that the magnetoroton minima are located at $q\ell_B=z_i/(2N+1)$, where $\ell_B$ is the magnetic length and $z_i$ are the zeros of the Bessel function $J_1$, independent of the microscopic details. Take the linearised FKPP equation \[\partial_t h =\partial^2_x h +h\] with boundary condition $h(m(t),t)=0$. Depending on the behaviour of the initial condition $h_0(x)=h(x,0)$ we obtain the asymptotics - up to a $o(1)$ term $r(t)$ - of the absorbing boundary $m(t)$ such that $\omega(x):=\lim_t h(x+m(t) ,t)$ exists and is non-trivial. In particular, as in Bramson's results for the non-linear FKPP equation, we recover the celebrated $-(3/2)\log t$ correction for initial conditions decaying faster than $x^\nu e^{-x}$ for some $\nu<-2$. Furthermore, when we are in this regime, the main result of the present work is the identification (to first order) of the $r(t)$ term which ensures the fastest convergence to $\omega(x)$. When $h_0(x)$ decays faster than $x^\nu e^{-x}$ for some $\nu<-3$, we show that $r(t)$ must be chosen to be $-3\sqrt{\pi/t}$ which is precisely the term predicted heuristically by Ebert-van Saarloos in the non-linear case. When the initial condition decays as $x^\nu e^{-x}$ for some $\nu \in [-3,-2)$, we show that even though we are still in the regime where Bramson's correction is $-(3/2)\log t$, the Ebert-van Saarloos correction has to be modified. There is significant recent work on coupling matter to Newton-Cartan spacetimes with the aim of investigating certain condensed matter phenomena. To this end, one needs to have a completely general spacetime consistent with local non-relativisitic symmetries which supports massive matter fields. In particular, one can not impose a priori restrictions on the geometric data if one wants to analyze matter response to a perturbed geometry. In this paper we construct such a Bargmann spacetime in complete generality without any prior restrictions on the fields specifying the geometry. The resulting spacetime structure includes the familiar Newton-Cartan structure with an additional gauge field which couples to mass. We illustrate the matter coupling with a few examples. The general spacetime we construct also includes as a special case the covariant description of Newtonian gravity, which has been thoroughly investigated in previous works. We also show how our Bargmann spacetimes arise from a suitable non-relativistic limit of Lorentzian spacetimes. We consider non-relativistic curved geometries and argue that the background structure should be generalized from that considered in previous works. In this approach the derivative operator is defined by a Galilean spin connection valued in the Lie algebra of the Galilean group. This includes the usual spin connection plus an additional "boost connection" which parameterizes the freedom in the derivative operator not fixed by torsion or metric compatibility. As an example we write down the most general theory of dissipative fluids consistent with the second law in curved non-relativistic geometries and find significant differences in the allowed transport coefficients from those found previously. Kubo formulas for all response coefficients are presented. Our approach also immediately generalizes to systems with independent mass and charge currents as would arise in multicomponent fluids. Along the way we also discuss how to write general locally Galilean invariant non-relativistic actions for multiple particle species at any order in derivatives. We consider a holographic model of chiral superfluidity whose bulk is Einstein Yang-Mills and compute viscosity and conductivity responses away from the probe limit. We calculate Hall viscosity and analyze its relationship to the superfluid density and the shift. We find that the relationship between these quantities derived from effective field theory at zero temperature persists for all temperatures: for $p\pm ip$ their ratio is equal to $\mp1/2$. At low temperatures the system develops a Lifshitz throat, indicating an anisotropic scaling symmetry in the infrared dynamics., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures

We investigate the relationship between Hall viscosity, spin density and response to geometric torsion. For the most general effective action for relativistic gapped systems, the presence of non-universal terms implies that there is no relationship between torsion response and Hall viscosity. We also consider free relativistic and non-relativistic microscopic actions and again verify the existence of analogous non-universal couplings. Explicit examples demonstrate that torsion response is unrelated to both Hall viscosity and spin density. For a spacetime of odd dimensions endowed with a unit vector field, we introduce a new topological current that is identically conserved and whose charge is equal to the Euler character of the even dimensional spacelike foliations. The existence of this current allows us to introduce new Chern-Simons-type terms in the effective field theories describing relativistic quantum Hall states and (2+1) dimensional superfluids. Using effective field theory, we calculate various correlation functions and identify transport coefficients. In the quantum Hall case, this current provides the natural relativistic generalization of the Wen-Zee term, required to characterize the shift and Hall viscosity in quantum Hall systems. Motivated by the observation of the fractional quantum Hall effect in graphene, we consider the effective field theory of relativistic quantum Hall states. We find that, beside the Chern-Simons term, the effective action also contains a term of topological nature, which couples the electromagnetic field with a topologically conserved current of $2+1$ dimensional relativistic fluid. In contrast to the Chern-Simons term, the new term involves the spacetime metric in a nontrivial way. We extract the predictions of the effective theory for linear electromagnetic and gravitational responses. We review and extend previous results regarding the stability and thermodynamics of Anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime at finite temperature. Using a combination of analytic and numerical techniques, we compute the energy, temperature, and entropy of perfect fluid stars in asymptotically AdS spacetimes. We find that at sufficiently high temperature (in the canonical ensemble) or energy (in the microcanonical ensemble) these configurations develop dynamical instabilities, which presumably lead to the formation of a black hole. We extend our analysis to the case of $AdS \times S$ compactifications stabilized by flux (such as those that arise in supergravity and string theory), and find that the inclusion of the sphere does not substantially alter these results. We then map out the phase structure of these theories in the canonical and microcanonical ensembles, paying attention to inequivalence of these ensembles for global anti-de Sitter space. With a certain scaling limit, the critical temperature can be parametrically lower than the string temperature, so that supergravity is a good description at the instability point. We consider a regular $n$-ary tree of height $h$, for which every vertex except the root is labelled with an independent and identically distributed continuous random variable. Taking motivation from a question in evolutionary biology, we consider the number of simple paths from the root to a leaf along vertices with increasing labels. We show that if $\alpha = n/h$ is fixed and $\alpha > 1/e$, the probability there exists such a path converges to 1 as $h \to \infty$. We investigate the non-perturbative stability of asymptotically anti-de Sitter gravity coupled to tachyonic scalar fields with mass near the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound. Such scalars are characterized by power-law radial decay near the AdS boundary, and typical boundary conditions are "Dirichlet" (fix the slower fall-off mode) or "Neumann" (fix the faster fall-off mode). More generally though, these "designer gravity" theories admit a large class of boundary conditions defined by a functional relation between the two modes. While previous stability proofs have considered boundary conditions that are deformations of the Neumann theory, the goal of this paper is to analyze stability in designer gravity with boundary conditions that are irrelevant deformations of the Dirichlet theory. We obtain a lower bound on the energy using spinor charge methods and show that for the most interesting class of such boundary conditions, the theory is always stable. We argue that the deformed theory flows to a new fixed point in the ultraviolet, which is just the Neumann theory.
