The one variable Krawtchouk polynomials, a special case of the $_2F_1$ function did appear in the spectral representation of the transition kernel for a Markov chain studied a long time ago by M. Hoare and M. Rahman. A multivariable extension of this Markov chain was considered in a later paper by these authors where a certain two variable extension of the $F_1$ Appel function shows up in the spectral analysis of the corresponding transition kernel. Independently of any probabilistic consideration a certain multivariable version of the Gelfand-Aomoto hypergeometric function was considered in papers by H. Mizukawa and H. Tanaka. These authors and others such as P. Iliev and P. Tertwilliger treat the two-dimensional version of the Hoare-Rahman work from a Lie-theoretic point of view. P. Iliev then treats the general $n$-dimensional case. All of these authors proved several properties of these functions. Here we show that these functions play a crucial role in the spectral analysis of the transition kernel that comes from pushing the work of Hoare-Rahman to the multivariable case. The methods employed here to prove this as well as several properties of these functions are completely different to those used by the authors mentioned above.

We give a hypergeometric proof involving a family of 2-variable Krawtchouk polynomials that were obtained earlier by Hoare and Rahman [SIGMA 4 (2008), 089, 18 pages] as a limit of the 9-j symbols of quantum angular momentum theory, and shown to be eigenfunctions of the transition probability kernel corresponding to a "poker dice" type probability model. The proof in this paper derives and makes use of the necessary and sufficient conditions of orthogonality in establishing orthogonality as well as indicating their geometrical significance. We also derive a 5-term recurrence relation satisfied by these polynomials.

We present here a probabilistic approach to the generation of new polynomials in two discrete variables. This extends our earlier work on the 'classical' orthogonal polynomials in a previously unexplored direction, resulting in the discovery of an exactly soluble eigenvalue problem corresponding to a bivariate Markov chain with a transition kernel formed by a convolution of simple binomial and trinomial distributions. The solution of the relevant eigenfunction problem, giving the spectral resolution of the kernel, leads to what we believe to be a new class of orthogonal polynomials in two discrete variables. A q-analogue a pair of multivariable biorthogonal polynomials found by M.V.Tratnik in 1989 is derived. The weight function is a product of a multivariable version of the integrand in the Askey-Roy integral and of the Askey-Wilson weight function in a single variable. The main goal is to interpret the Askey-Wilson function and the corresponding transform pair on the quantum SU(1,1) group. A weight on the C^*-algebra of continuous functions vanishing at infinity on the quantum SU(1,1) group is studied, which is left and right invariant in a weak sense with respect to a product defined using Wall functions. The Haar weight restricted to certain subalgebras are explicitly determined in terms of an infinitely supported Jackson integral and in terms of an infinitely supported Askey-Wilson type measure. For the evaluation the spectral analysis of explicit unbounded doubly infinite Jacobi matrices and some new summation formulas for basic hypergeometric series are needed. The spherical functions are calculated in terms of Askey-Wilson functions and big q-Jacobi functions. Wiener used the Poisson kernel for the Hermite polynomials to deal with the classical Fourier transform. Askey, Atakishiyev and Suslov used this approach to obtain a q-Fourier transform by using the continuous q-Hermite polynomials. Rahman and Suslov extended this result by taking the Askey--Wilson polynomials, considered to be the most general continuous classical orthogonal polynomials. The theory of q-Fourier transformation is further extended here by considering a nonsymmetric version of the Poisson kernel with Askey--Wilson polynomials. This approach enables us to obtain some new results, for example, the complex and real orthogonalities of these kernels.

We establish an integral representations of a right inverses of the Askey-Wilson finite difference operator in an $L^2$ space weighted by the weight function of the continuous $q$-Jacobi polynomials. We characterize the eigenvalues of this integral operator and prove a $q$-analog of the expansion of $e^{ixy}$ in Jacobi polynomials of argument $x$. We also outline a general procedure of finding integral representations for inverses of linear operators.
