Community-based fact-checking is a promising approach to verify social media content and correct misleading posts at scale. Yet, causal evidence regarding its effectiveness in reducing the spread of misinformation on social media is missing. Here, we performed a large-scale empirical study to analyze whether community notes reduce the spread of misleading posts on X. Using a Difference-in-Differences design and repost time series data for N=237,677 (community fact-checked) cascades that had been reposted more than 431 million times, we found that exposing users to community notes reduced the spread of misleading posts by, on average, 62.0%. Furthermore, community notes increased the odds that users delete their misleading posts by 103.4%. However, our findings also suggest that community notes might be too slow to intervene in the early (and most viral) stage of the diffusion. Our work offers important implications to enhance the effectiveness of community-based fact-checking approaches on social media.

The bond distance is the simplest and most obvious indicator of the nature of a given chemical bond. However, for rare chemistry, it may happen that it is not yet firmly established. In this communication, we will show that the formally-triple protactinium(V) mono-oxo bond is predicted longer than what was previously reported in the solid state and in solution, based on robust quantum mechanical calculations, supported by an extensive methodological study. Furthermore, additional calculations are used to demonstrate that the Pa-Ooxo bond of interest is more sensitive to complexation than the supposedly analogous U-Oyl ones, not only in terms of bond distance but also of finer bond descriptors associated with the effective bond multiplicity.

\texttt{ml\_edm} is a Python 3 library, designed for early decision making of any learning tasks involving temporal/sequential data. The package is also modular, providing researchers an easy way to implement their own triggering strategy for classification, regression or any machine learning task. As of now, many Early Classification of Time Series (ECTS) state-of-the-art algorithms, are efficiently implemented in the library leveraging parallel computation. The syntax follows the one introduce in \texttt{scikit-learn}, making estimators and pipelines compatible with \texttt{ml\_edm}. This software is distributed over the BSD-3-Clause license, source code can be found at \url{https://github.com/ML-EDM/ml_edm}.

This paper studies the last-iterate convergence properties of the exponential weights algorithm with constant learning rates. We consider a repeated interaction in discrete time, where each player uses an exponential weights algorithm characterized by an initial mixed action and a fixed learning rate, so that the mixed action profile $p^t$ played at stage $t$ follows an homogeneous Markov chain. At first, we show that whenever a strict Nash equilibrium exists, the probability to play a strict Nash equilibrium at the next stage converges almost surely to 0 or 1. Secondly, we show that the limit of $p^t$, whenever it exists, belongs to the set of ``Nash Equilibria with Equalizing Payoffs''. Thirdly, we show that in strong coordination games, where the payoff of a player is positive on the diagonal and 0 elsewhere, $p^t$ converges almost surely to one of the strict Nash equilibria. We conclude with open questions.

In many situations, the measurements of a studied phenomenon are provided sequentially, and the prediction of its class needs to be made as early as possible so as not to incur too high a time penalty, but not too early and risk paying the cost of misclassification. This problem has been particularly studied in the case of time series, and is known as Early Classification of Time Series (ECTS). Although it has been the subject of a growing body of literature, there is still a lack of a systematic, shared evaluation protocol to compare the relative merits of the various existing methods. This document begins by situating these methods within a principle-based taxonomy. It defines dimensions for organizing their evaluation, and then reports the results of a very extensive set of experiments along these dimensions involving nine state-of-the art ECTS algorithms. In addition, these and other experiments can be carried out using an open-source library in which most of the existing ECTS algorithms have been implemented (see \url{https://github.com/ML-EDM/ml_edm}).

We build a novel database of around 285,000 notes from the Twitter Community Notes program to analyze the causal influence of appending contextual information to potentially misleading posts on their dissemination. Employing a difference in difference design, our findings reveal that adding context below a tweet reduces the number of retweets by almost half. A significant, albeit smaller, effect is observed when focusing on the number of replies or quotes. Community Notes also increase by 80% the probability that a tweet is deleted by its creator. The post-treatment impact is substantial, but the overall effect on tweet virality is contingent upon the timing of the contextual information's publication. Our research concludes that, although crowdsourced fact-checking is effective, its current speed may not be adequate to substantially reduce the dissemination of misleading information on social media.

This article presents a proof of the Feldman-Moore theorem on Cartan subalgebras in W*-algebras based on the non-commutative Stone equivalence between Boolean inverse semigroups and Boolean groupoids. The proof is decomposed into two parts. The first part writes the W*-algebra as the W*-algebra of the Weyl twist of the Cartan subalgebra. This paper describes a receiver that uses an innovative method to predict, according to history of receiver operating metrics (packet lost/well received), the optimum automatic gain control (AGC) index or most appropriate variable gain range to be used for next packet reception, anticipating an interferer appearing during the payload reception. This allows the receiver to have higher immunity to interferers even if they occur during the gain frozen payload reception period whilst still ensuring an optimum sensitivity level. As a result, the method allows setting the receiver gain to get an optimum trade-off between reception sensitivity and random interferer immunity., Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as deep learning are evolving very quickly bringing many changes to our everyday lives. To explore the future impact and potential of AI in the field of music and sound technologies a doctoral day was held between Queen Mary University of London (QMUL, UK) and Sciences et Technologies de la Musique et du Son (STMS, France). Prompt questions about current trends in AI and music were generated by academics from QMUL and STMS. Students from the two institutions then debated these questions. This report presents a summary of the student debates on the topics of: Data, Impact, and the Environment; Responsible Innovation and Creative Practice; Creativity and Bias; and From Tools to the Singularity. The students represent the future generation of AI and music researchers. The academics represent the incumbent establishment. The student debates reported here capture visions, dreams, concerns, uncertainties, and contentious issues for the future of AI and music as the establishment is rightfully challenged by the next generation.

Multispectral Optoacoustic Tomography (MSOT) uniquely enables spatial mapping in high resolution of oxygen saturation (SO$_2$), with potential applications in studying pathological complications and therapy efficacy. MSOT offers seamless integration with ultrasonography, by using a common ultrasound detector array. However, MSOT relies on multiple successive acquisitions of optoacoustic (OA) images at different optical wavelengths and the low frame rate of OA imaging makes the MSOT acquisition sensitive to body/respiratory motion. Moreover, estimation of SO$_2$ is highly sensitive to noise, and artefacts related to the respiratory motion of the animal were identified as the primary source of noise in MSOT.In this work, we propose a two-step image processing method for SO$_2$ estimation in deep tissues. First, to mitigate motion artefacts, we propose a method of selection of OA images acquired only during the respiratory pause of the animal, using ultrafast ultrasound images (USIs) acquired immediately after each OA acquisition (USI acquisition duration of 1.4 ms and a total delay of 7 ms). We show that gating is more effective using USIs than OA images at different optical wavelengths. Secondly, we propose a novel method which can estimate directly the SO$_2$ value of a pixel and at the same time evaluate the amount of noise present in that pixel. Hence, the method can efficiently eliminate the pixels dominated by noise from the final SO$_2$ map. Our post-processing method is shown to outperform conventional methods for SO$_2$ estimation, and the method was validated by in vivo oxygen challenge experiments.

Time Series Classification (TSC) has received much attention in the past two decades and is still a crucial and challenging problem in data science and knowledge engineering. Indeed, along with the increasing availability of time series data, many TSC algorithms have been suggested by the research community in the literature. Besides state-of-the-art methods based on similarity measures, intervals, shapelets, dictionaries, deep learning methods or hybrid ensemble methods, several tools for extracting unsupervised informative summary statistics, aka features, from time series have been designed in the recent years. Originally designed for descriptive analysis and visualization of time series with informative and interpretable features, very few of these feature engineering tools have been benchmarked for TSC problems and compared with state-of-the-art TSC algorithms in terms of predictive performance. In this article, we aim at filling this gap and propose a simple TSC process to evaluate the potential predictive performance of the feature sets obtained with existing feature engineering tools. Thus, we present an empirical study of 11 feature engineering tools branched with 9 supervised classifiers over 112 time series data sets. The analysis of the results of more than 10000 learning experiments indicate that feature-based methods perform as accurately as current state-of-the-art TSC algorithms, and thus should rightfully be considered further in the TSC literature.

We present 294 pulsars found in GeV data from the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. Another 33 millisecond pulsars (MSPs) discovered in deep radio searches of LAT sources will likely reveal pulsations once phase-connected rotation ephemerides are achieved. A further dozen optical and/or X-ray binary systems co-located with LAT sources also likely harbor gamma-ray MSPs. This catalog thus reports roughly 340 gamma-ray pulsars and candidates, 10% of all known pulsars, compared to $\leq 11$ known before Fermi. Half of the gamma-ray pulsars are young. Of these, the half that are undetected in radio have a broader Galactic latitude distribution than the young radio-loud pulsars. The others are MSPs, with 6 undetected in radio. Overall, >235 are bright enough above 50 MeV to fit the pulse profile, the energy spectrum, or both. For the common two-peaked profiles, the gamma-ray peak closest to the magnetic pole crossing generally has a softer spectrum. The spectral energy distributions tend to narrow as the spindown power $\dot E$ decreases to its observed minimum near $10^{33}$ erg s$^{-1}$, approaching the shape for synchrotron radiation from monoenergetic electrons. We calculate gamma-ray luminosities when distances are available. Our all-sky gamma-ray sensitivity map is useful for population syntheses. Polonium (Po, Z = 84) is a main-block element with poorly known physico-chemical properties. Not much information has been firmly acquired since its discovery by Marie and Pierre Curie in 1898, especially regarding its speciation in aqueous solution and spectroscopy. In this work, we revisit the absorption properties of two complexes, [PoCl5]^- and [PoCl6]^{2-}, using quantum mechanical calculations. These complexes have the potential to exhibit a maximum absorption at 418 nm in HCl medium (for 0.5 mol/L concentrations and above). Initially, we examine the electronic spectra of the Po^{4+} free ion and of its isoelectronic analogue, Bi^{3+}. In the spin-orbit configuration interaction (SOCI) framework. Our findings demonstrate that the SOCI matrix should be dressed with correlated electronic energies and that the quality of the spectra is largely improved by decontracting the reference states at the complete active space plus singles (CAS+S) level. Subsequently, we investigate the absorption properties of the [PoCl5]^- and [PoCl6]^{2-} complexes in two stages. Firstly, we perform methodological tests at the MP2/def2-TZVP gas phase geometries, indicating that the decontraction of the reference states can there be skipped without compromising the accuracy significantly. Secondly, we study the solution absorption properties by means of single-point calculations performed at the solvated geometries, obtained by an implicit solvation treatment or a combination of implicit and explicit solvation. Our results highlight the importance of saturating the first coordination sphere of the Po^{IV} ion to obtain a qualitatively correct picture. Finally, we conclude that the known-for-decades 418 nm peak could be attributed to a mixture of both the [PoCl5(H2O)]^- and [PoCl6]^{2-} complexes. The electronic orders appearing in condensed matter systems are originating from the precise arrangement of atoms constituting the crystal as well as their nature. This teneous relationship can lead to highly different phases in condensed matter, and drive electronic phase transitions. Here, we show that a very slight deformation of the crystal structure of TbTe$_3$ can have a dramatic influence on the electronic order that is stabilized. In particular, we show that the Charge Density Wave (CDW) developping along the $\vec{c}$ axis in the pristine state, switches to an orientation along $\vec{a}$ when the naturally orthorhombic system is turned into a tetragonal system. This is achieved by performing true biaxial mechanical deformation of a TbTe$_3$ sample from 250K to 375K, and by measuring both structural and electronic parameters with x-ray diffraction and transport measurements. We show that this switching transition is driven by the tetragonality parameter $a/c$, and that the transition occurs for $a=c$, with a coexistence region for $0.9985< a/c < 1.002$. The CDW transition temperature $T_c$ is found to have a linear dependence with $a/c$, with no saturation in the deformed states investigated here, while the gap saturates out of the coexistence region. The linear dependence of $T_c$ is accounted for within a tight-binding model. Our results question the relationship between the gap and $T_c$ in RTe$_3$ systems. More generally, our method of applying true biaxial deformation at cryogenic temperatures can be applied to many systems displaying electronic phase transitions, and opens a new route towards the study of coexisting or competing electronic orders in condensed matter.

The accuracy and explainability of data-driven nowcasting models are of great importance in many socio-economic sectors reliant on weather-dependent decision making. This paper proposes a novel architecture called Small Attention Residual UNet (SAR-UNet) for precipitation and cloud cover nowcasting. Here, SmaAt-UNet is used as a core model and is further equipped with residual connections, parallel to the depthwise separable convolutions. The proposed SAR-UNet model is evaluated on two datasets, i.e., Dutch precipitation maps ranging from 2016 to 2019 and French cloud cover binary images from 2017 to 2018. The obtained results show that SAR-UNet outperforms other examined models in precipitation nowcasting from 30 to 180 minutes in the future as well as cloud cover nowcasting in the next 90 minutes. Furthermore, we provide additional insights on the nowcasts made by our proposed model using Grad-CAM, a visual explanation technique, which is employed on different levels of the encoder and decoder paths of the SAR-UNet model and produces heatmaps highlighting the critical regions in the input image as well as intermediate representations to the precipitation. The heatmaps generated by Grad-CAM reveal the interactions between the residual connections and the depthwise separable convolutions inside of the multiple depthwise separable blocks placed throughout the network architecture., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

No quantum system can be considered totally isolated from its environment. In most cases the interaction between the system of interest and the external degrees of freedom deeply changes its dynamics, as described by open quantum system theory. Nevertheless, engineered environment can be turned into beneficial effects for some quantum information tasks. Here we demonstrate an optical simulator of a quantum system coupled to an arbitrary and reconfigurable environment built as a complex network of quantum interacting systems. We experimentally retrieve typical features of open quantum system dynamics like the spectral density and quantum non-Markovianity, by exploiting squeezing and entanglement correlation of a continuous variables optical platform. This opens the way to the experimental tests of open quantum systems in reconfigurable environments that are relevant in, among others, quantum information, quantum thermodynamics, quantum transport and quantum synchronization., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures

Protactinium ($Z$ = 91) is a very rare actinide with peculiar physico-chemical properties. Indeed, although one may naively think that it behaves similarly to either thorium or uranium by its position in the periodic table, it may in fact follow its own rules. Because of the quite small energy gap between its valence shells (in particular the 5$f$ and 6$d$ ones) and also the strong influence of relativistic effects on its properties, it is actually a challenging element for theoretical chemists. In this article, we combine experimental information, chemical arguments and standard first-principle calculations, complemented by implicit and explicit solvation, to revisit the stepwise complexation of aqueous protactinium(V) with sulfate and oxalate dianionic ligands (SO$_4$$^{2-}$ and C$_2$O$_4$$^{2-}$, respectively). From a methodological viewpoint, we notably conclude that it is necessary to at least saturate the coordination sphere of protactinium(V) to reach converged equilibrium constant values. Furthermore, in the case of single complexations (i.e. with one sulfate or oxalate ligand bound in the bidentate fashion), we show that it is necessary to maintain the coordination of one hydroxyl group, present in the supposed [PaO(OH)]$^{2+}$ precursor, to obtain coherent complexation constants. Therefore, we predict that this hydroxyl group is maintained in the formation of 1:1 complexes while we confirm that it is withdrawn when coordinating three sulfate or oxalate ligands. Finally, we stress that this work is a first step toward the future use of theoretical predictions to elucidate the enigmatic chemistry of protactinium in solution.

The Microchannel X-ray Telescope (MXT) is an innovative compact X-ray instrument on board the SVOM astronomical mission dedicated to the study of transient phenomena such as gamma-ray bursts. During 3 weeks, we have tested the MXT flight model at the Panter X-ray test facility under the nominal temperature and vacuum conditions that MXT will undergo in-flight. We collected data at series of characteristic energies probing the entire MXT energy range, from 0.28 keV up to 9 keV, for multiple source positions with the center of the point spread function (PSF) inside and outside the detector field of view (FOV). We stacked the data of the positions with the PSF outside the FOV to obtain a uniformly illuminated matrix and reduced all data sets using a dedicated pipeline. We determined the best spectral performance of MXT using an optimized data processing, especially for the energy calibration and the charge sharing effect induced by the pixel low energy thresholding. Our results demonstrate that MXT is compliant with the instrument requirement regarding the energy resolution (<80 eV at 1.5 keV), the low and high energy threshold, and the accuracy of the energy calibration ($\pm$20 eV). We also determined the charge transfer inefficiency (~$10^{-5}$) of the detector and modeled its evolution with energy prior to the irradiation that MXT will undergo during its in-orbit lifetime. Finally, we measured the relation of the energy resolution as function of the photon energy. We determined an equivalent noise charge of 4.9 $\pm$ 0.2 e- rms for the MXT detection chain and a Fano factor of 0.131 $\pm$ 0.003 in silicon at 208 K, in agreement with previous works. Verification of properties expressed as $\omega$-regular languages such as LTL can benefit hugely from stutter insensitivity, using a diverse set of reduction strategies. However properties that are not stutter invariant, for instance due to the use of the neXt operator of LTL or to some form of counting in the logic, are not covered by these techniques in general. We propose in this paper to study a weaker property than stutter insensitivity. In a stutter insensitive language both adding and removing stutter to a word does not change its acceptance, any stuttering can be abstracted away; by decomposing this equivalence relation into two implications we obtain weaker conditions. We define a shortening insensitive language where any word that stutters less than a word in the language must also belong to the language. A lengthening insensitive language has the dual property. A semi-decision procedure is then introduced to reliably prove shortening insensitive properties or deny lengthening insensitive properties while working with a \emph{reduction} of a system. A reduction has the property that it can only shorten runs. Lipton's transaction reductions or Petri net agglomerations are examples of eligible structural reduction strategies. We also present an approach that can reason using a partition of a property language into its stutter insensitive, shortening insensitive, lengthening insensitive and length sensitive parts to still use structural reductions even when working with arbitrary properties. The Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) is a second-generation VLT panoramic integral-field spectrograph currently in manufacturing, assembly and integration phase. MUSE has a field of 1x1 arcmin2 sampled at 0.2x0.2 arcsec2 and is assisted by the VLT ground layer adaptive optics ESO facility using four laser guide stars. The instrument is a large assembly of 24 identical high performance integral field units, each one composed of an advanced image slicer, a spectrograph and a 4kx4k detector. The Microchannel X-ray Telescope (MXT) will be the first focusing X-ray telescope based on a "Lobster-Eye" optical design to be flown on Sino-French mission SVOM. SVOM will be dedicated to the study of Gamma-Ray Bursts and more generally time-domain astrophysics. The MXT telescope is a compact (focal length ~ 1.15 m) and light (< 42 kg) instrument, sensitive in the 0.2--10 keV energy range. It is composed of an optical system, based on micro-pore optics (MPOs) of 40 micron pore size, coupled to a low-noise pnCDD X-ray detector. In this paper we describe the expected scientific performance of the MXT telescope, based on the End-to-End calibration campaign performed in fall 2021, before the integration of the SVOM payload on the satellite., Comment: 22 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in Experimental Astronomy

We study the convergence of Optimistic Gradient Descent Ascent in unconstrained bilinear games. In a first part, we consider the zero-sum case and extend previous results by Daskalakis et al. in 2018, Liang and Stokes in 2019, and others: we prove, for any payoff matrix, the exponential convergence of OGDA to a saddle point and also provide a new, optimal, geometric ratio for the convergence. We also characterize the step sizes inducing convergence, and are able to deduce the optimal step size for the speed of convergence. In a second part, we introduce OGDA for general-sum bilinear games: we show that in an interesting class of games, either OGDA converges exponentially fast to a Nash equilibrium, or the payoffs for both players converge exponentially fast to $+\infty$ (which might be interpreted as endogenous emergence of coordination, or cooperation, among players). We also give sufficient conditions for convergence of OGDA to a Nash equilibrium. These conditions are used to increase the speed of convergence of a min-max problem involving a matrix $A$, by introducing a general-sum game using the Moore-Penrose inverse matrix of $A$. This shows for the first time, at our knowledge, that general-sum games can be used to optimally improve algorithms designed for min-max problems. HARMONI is the first light visible and near-IR integral field spectrograph for the ELT covering a large spectral range from 450nm to 2450nm with resolving powers from 3500 to 18000 and spatial sampling from 60mas to 4mas. It can operate in two Adaptive Optics modes-SCAO and LTAO-or with no AO. The project is preparing for Final Design Reviews. The laser Tomographic AO (LTAO) system provides AO correction with very high sky-coverage thanks to two systems: the Laser Guide Star Sensors (LGSS) and the Natural Guide Star Sensors (NGSS). LGSS is dedicated to the analysis of the wavefront coming from 6 laser guide stars created by the ELT. It is made of 6 independent wavefront sensor (WFS) modules mounted on a rotator of 600mm diameter to stabilise the pupil onto the microlens array in front of the detector. The optical design accepts elongated spots of up to 16 arcsec with no truncation using a CMOS detector from SONY. We will present the final optical and mechanical design of the LGSS based on freeform lenses to minimize the numbers of optical components and to accommodate for the diversity of sodium layer configurations. We will focus on rotator design, illustrating how we will move 1 tons with 90" accuracy in restrictive environment. Finally, we will present the strategy to verify the system in HARMONI context. The main challenge for the verification being how to test an AO system without access to the deformable mirror, part of the ELT.

Spot is a C ++ 17 library for LTL and $\omega$-automata manipulation, with command-line utilities, and Python bindings. This paper summarizes its evolution over the past six years, since the release of Spot 2.0, which was the first version to support $\omega$-automata with arbitrary acceptance conditions, and the last version presented at a conference. Since then, Spot has been extended with several features such as acceptance transformations, alternating automata, games, LTL synthesis, and more. We also shed some lights on the data-structure used to store automata.

Nowadays, making thermoelectric materials more efficient in energy conversion is still a challenge. In this work, to reduce the thermal conductivity and thus improve the overall thermoelectric performances, point and extended defects were generated in epitaxial 111-ScN thin films by implantation using argon ions. The films were investigated by structural, optical, electrical, and thermoelectric characterization methods. The results demonstrated that argon implantation leads to the formation of stable defects (up to 750 K operating temperature) were identified as interstitial type defect clusters and so-called argon-vacancy complexes. The insertion of those specific defects induces acceptor-type deep levels in the bandgap yielding to a reduce of the free carrier mobility. With a reduce electrical conductivity, the irradiated sample exhibited higher Seebeck coefficient maintaining the power factor of the film. The thermal conductivity is strongly reduced from 12 to 3 W.m-1.K-1 at 300 K, showing the effect of defects in increasing phonon scattering. Subsequent high temperature annealing, at 1573 K, leads to the progressive evolution of defects: the initial clusters of interstitial evolved to the benefit of smaller clusters and the formation of bubble. Thus, the number of free carriers, the resistivity and the Seebeck coefficient are almost restored but the mobility of the carriers remains low and a 30% drop in thermal conductivity is still effective (8.5 W.m-1.K-1). This study shows that the control defect engineering with defects introduced by irradiation using noble gases in a thermoelectric coating can be an attractive method to enhance the figure of merit of thermoelectric materials., Comment: 7 figures

Verification of properties expressed as-regular languages such as LTL can benefit hugely from stutter-insensitivity, using a diverse set of reduction strategies. However properties that are not stutter-insensitive, for instance due to the use of the neXt operator of LTL or to some form of counting in the logic, are not covered by these techniques in general. We propose in this paper to study a weaker property than stutter-insensitivity. In a stutter insensitive language both adding and removing stutter to a word does not change its acceptance, any stuttering can be abstracted away; by decomposing this equivalence relation into two implications we obtain weaker conditions. We define a shortening insensitive language where any word that stutters less than a word in the language must also belong to the language. A lengthening insensitive language has the dual property. A semi-decision procedure is then introduced to reliably prove shortening insensitive properties or deny lengthening insensitive properties while working with a reduction of a system. A reduction has the property that it can only shorten runs. Lipton's transaction reductions or Petri net agglomerations are examples of eligible structural reduction strategies. An implementation and experimental evidence is provided showing most nonrandom properties sensitive to stutter are actually shortening or lengthening insensitive. We define the distance between two information structures as the largest possible difference in value across all zero-sum games. We provide a tractable characterization of distance and use it to discuss the relation between the value of information in games versus single-agent problems, the value of additional information, informational substitutes, complements, or joint information. The convergence to a countable information structure under value-based distance is equivalent to the weak convergence of belief hierarchies, implying, among other things, that for zero-sum games, approximate knowledge is equivalent to common knowledge. At the same time, the space of information structures under the value-based distance is large: there exists a sequence of information structures where players acquire increasingly more information, and $\epsilon$ > 0 such that any two elements of the sequence have distance of at least $\epsilon$. This result answers by the negative the second (and last unsolved) of the three problems posed by J.F. We consider the problem in which n items arrive to a market sequentially over time, where two agents compete to choose the best possible item. When an agent selects an item, he leaves the market and obtains a payoff given by the value of the item, which is represented by a random variable following a known distribution with support contained in [0, 1]. We consider two different settings for this problem. In the first one, namely competitive selection problem with no recall, agents observe the value of each item upon its arrival and decide whether to accept or reject it, in which case they will not select it in future. In the second setting, called competitive selection problem with recall, agents are allowed to select any of the available items arrived so far. For each of these problems, we describe the game induced by the selection problem as a sequential game with imperfect information and study the set of subgame-perfect Nash equilibrium payoffs. We also study the efficiency of the game equilibria. More specifically, we address the question of how much better is to have the power of getting any available item against the take-it-or-leave-it fashion. To this end, we define and study the price of anarchy and price of stability of a game instance as the ratio between the maximal sum of payoffs obtained by players under any feasible strategy and the sum of payoffs for the worst and best subgame-perfect Nash equilibrium, respectively. For the no recall case, we prove that if there are two agents and two items arriving sequentially over time, both the price of anarchy and price of stability are upper bounded by the constant 4/3 for any value distribution. Even more, we show that this bound is tight.

We analyse extensions $\Sigma$ of groupoids $G$ by bundles $A$ of abelian groups. We describe a pushout construction for such extensions, and use it to describe the extension group of a given groupoid $G$ by a given bundle $A$. There is a natural action of $\Sigma$ on the dual of $A$, yielding a corresponding transformation groupoid. The pushout of this transformation groupoid by the natural map from the fibre product of $A$ with its dual to the Cartesian product of the dual with the circle is a twist over the transformation groupoid resulting from the action of $G$ on the dual of $A$. We prove that the full $C^*$-algebra of this twist is isomorphic to the full $C^*$-algebra of $\Sigma$, and that this isomorphism descends to an isomorphism of reduced algebras. Extensive works have tackled Language Identification (LID) in the speech domain, however their application to the singing voice trails and performances on Singing Language Identification (SLID) can be improved leveraging recent progresses made in other singing related tasks. This work presents a modernized phonotactic system for SLID on polyphonic music: phoneme recognition is performed with a Connectionist Temporal Classification (CTC)-based acoustic model trained with multilingual data, before language classification with a recurrent model based on the phonemes estimation. The full pipeline is trained and evaluated with a large and publicly available dataset, with unprecedented performances. Today, thanks in particular to the results of the ESA Planck mission, the concordance cosmological model appears to be the most robust to describe the evolution and content of the Universe from its early to late times. It summarizes the evolution of matter, made mainly of dark matter, from the primordial fluctuations generated by inflation around $10^{-30}$ second after the Big-Bang to galaxies and clusters of galaxies, 13.8 billion years later, and the evolution of the expansion of space, with a relative slowdown in the matter-dominated era and, since a few billion years, an acceleration powered by dark energy. But we are far from knowing the pillars of this model which are inflation, dark matter and dark energy. Comprehending these fundamental questions requires a detailed mapping of our observable Universe over the whole of cosmic time. The relic radiation provides the starting point and galaxies draw the cosmic web. JAXA's LiteBIRD mission will map the beginning of our Universe with a crucial test for inflation (its primordial gravity waves), and the ESA Euclid mission will map the most recent half part, crucial for dark energy. This article extends the main results of the publication arXiv:2001.01312 to the case of a twisted groupoid. More precisely, it gives a decomposition of the C*-algebra of a twisted locally compact groupoid with Haar system in presence of a normal subgroupoid. When the normal subgroupoid and the twist over it are abelian, one obtains another twisted groupoid C*-algebra. We study the impact of weak identification in discrete choice models, and provide insights into the determinants of identification strength in these models. Using these insights, we propose a novel test that can consistently detect weak identification in commonly applied discrete choice models, such as probit, logit, and many of their extensions. Furthermore, we demonstrate that when the null hypothesis of weak identification is rejected, Wald-based inference can be carried out using standard formulas and critical values. A Monte Carlo study compares our proposed testing approach against commonly applied weak identification tests. The results simultaneously demonstrate the good performance of our approach and the fundamental failure of using conventional weak identification tests for linear models in the discrete choice model context. Furthermore, we compare our approach against those commonly applied in the literature in two empirical examples: married women labor force participation, and US food aid and civil conflicts.

Janus single-layer transition metal dichalcogenides, in which the two chalcogen layers have a different chemical nature, push chemical composition control beyond what is usually achievable with van der Waals heterostructures. Here we report such a novel Janus compound, SPtSe, which is predicted to exhibit strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling. We synthetized it by conversion of a single-layer of PtSe$_2$ on Pt(111) via sulphurization under H$_2$S atmosphere. Our in situ and operando structural analysis with grazing incidence synchrotron X-ray diffraction reveals the process by which the Janus alloy forms. The crystalline long-range order of the as-grown PtSe$_2$ monolayer is first lost due to thermal annealing. A subsequent recrystallization in presence of a source of sulphur yields a highly ordered SPtSe alloy, which is iso-structural to the pristine PtSe$_2$. The chemical composition is resolved, layer-by-layer, using angle-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, demonstrating that Se-by-S substitution occurs selectively in the topmost chalcogen layer., Comment: 23 pages, 4 figures and 1 table

We construct a novel database containing hundreds of thousands geotagged messages related to the COVID-19 pandemic sent on Twitter. We create a daily index of social distancing -- at the state level -- to capture social distancing beliefs by analyzing the number of tweets containing keywords such as "stay home", "stay safe", "wear mask", "wash hands" and "social distancing". We find that an increase in the Twitter index of social distancing on day t-1 is associated with a decrease in mobility on day t. We also find that state orders, an increase in the number of COVID cases, precipitation and temperature contribute to reducing human mobility. Republican states are also less likely to enforce social distancing. Beliefs shared on social networks could both reveal the behavior of individuals and influence the behavior of others. Our findings suggest that policy makers can use geotagged Twitter data -- in conjunction with mobility data -- to better understand individual voluntary social distancing actions.

Indirect Inference (I-I) is a popular technique for estimating complex parametric models whose likelihood function is intractable, however, the statistical efficiency of I-I estimation is questionable. While the efficient method of moments, Gallant and Tauchen (1996), promises efficiency, the price to pay for this efficiency is a loss of parsimony and thereby a potential lack of robustness to model misspecification. This stands in contrast to simpler I-I estimation strategies, which are known to display less sensitivity to model misspecification precisely due to their focus on specific elements of the underlying structural model. In this research, we propose a new simulation-based approach that maintains the parsimony of I-I estimation, which is often critical in empirical applications, but can also deliver estimators that are nearly as efficient as maximum likelihood. This new approach is based on using a constrained approximation to the structural model, which ensures identification and can deliver estimators that are nearly efficient. We demonstrate this approach through several examples, and show that this approach can deliver estimators that are nearly as efficient as maximum likelihood, when feasible, but can be employed in many situations where maximum likelihood is infeasible.

Photoacoustic (PA) imaging systems are spreading in the biomedical community, and the de-velopment of new PA contrast agents is an active area of research. However, PA contrast agents are usually characterized with spectrophotometry or uncalibrated PA imaging systems, leading to partial assessment of their PA efficiency. To enable quantitative PA spectroscopy of contrast agents in vitro with conventional PA imaging systems, we have developed an adapted calibration method. Contrast agents in solution are injected in a dedicated non-scattering tube phantom imaged at different optical wavelengths. The calibration method uses a reference solu-tion of cupric sulfate to simultaneously correct for the spectral energy distribution of excitation light at the tube location and perform a conversion of the tube amplitude in the image from ar-bitrary to spectroscopic units. The method does not require any precise alignment and provides quantitative PA spectra, even with non-uniform illumination and ultrasound sensitivity. It was implemented on a conventional imaging setup based on a tunable laser operating between 680 nm and 980 nm and a 5 MHz clinical ultrasound array. We demonstrated robust calibrated PA spectroscopy with sample volumes as low as 15 {\mu}L of known chromophores and commonly used contrast agents. The validated method will be an essential and accessible tool for the de-velopment of new and efficient PA contrast agents by improving their quantitative characterization., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures

Current designs for all three extremely large telescopes show the overwhelming adoption of the pyramid wavefront sensor (P-WFS) as the WFS of choice for adaptive optics (AO) systems sensing on natural guide stars (NGS) or extended objects. The key advantages of the P-WFS over the Shack-Hartmann are known and are mainly provided by the improved sensitivity (fainter NGS) and reduced sensitivity to spatial aliasing. However, robustness and tolerances of the P-WFS for the ELTs are not currently well understood. In this paper, we present simulation results for the single-conjugate AO mode of HARMONI, a visible and near-infrared integral field spectrograph for the European Extremely Large Telescope. We first explore the wavefront sensing issues related to the telescope itself; namely the island effect (i.e. differential piston) and M1 segments phasing errors. We present mitigation strategies to the island effect and their performance. We then focus on some performance optimisation aspects of the AO design to explore the impact of the RTC latency and the optical gain issues, which will in particular affect the high-contrast mode of HARMONI. Finally, we investigate the influence of the quality of glass pyramid prism itself, and of optical aberrations on the final AO performance. By relaxing the tolerances on the fabrication of the prism, we are able to reduce hardware costs and simplify integration. We show the importance of calibration (i.e. updating the control matrix) to capture any displacement of the telescope pupil and rotation of the support structure for M4. We also show the importance of the number of pixels used for wavefront sensing to relax tolerances of the pyramid prism. We describe CARTOLABE, a web-based multi-scale system for visualizing and exploring large textual corpora based on topics, introducing a novel mechanism for the progressive visualization of filtering queries. Initially designed to represent and navigate through scientific publications in different disciplines, CARTOLABE has evolved to become a generic framework and accommodate various corpora, ranging from Wikipedia (4.5M entries) to the French National Debate (4.3M entries). CARTOLABE is made of two modules: the first relies on Natural Language Processing methods, converting a corpus and its entities (documents, authors, concepts) into high-dimensional vectors, computing their projection on the 2D plane, and extracting meaningful labels for regions of the plane. The second module is a web-based visualization, displaying tiles computed from the multidimensional projection of the corpus using the U MAP projection method. This visualization module aims at enabling users with no expertise in visualization and data analysis to get an overview of their corpus, and to interact with it: exploring, querying, filtering, panning and zooming on regions of semantic interest. Three use cases are discussed to illustrate CARTOLABE's versatility and ability to bring large scale textual corpus visualization and exploration to a wide audience.

One of the most important properties influencing the chemical behavior of an element is the energy released with the addition of an extra electron to the neutral atom, referred to as the electron affinity (EA). Among the remaining elements with unknown EA is astatine, the purely radioactive element 85. Astatine is the heaviest naturally occurring halogen and its isotope $^{211}$At is remarkably well suited for targeted radionuclide therapy of cancer. With the At$^-$ anion being involved in many aspects of current astatine labelling protocols, the knowledge of the electron affinity of this element is of prime importance. In addition, the EA can be used to deduce other concepts such as the electronegativity, thereby further improving the understanding of astatine's chemistry. Here, we report the first measurement of the EA for astatine to be 2.41578(7)eV. This result is compared to state-of-the-art relativistic quantum mechanical calculations, which require incorporation of the electron-electron correlation effects on the highest possible level. The developed technique of laser-photodetachment spectroscopy of radioisotopes opens the path for future EA measurements of other radioelements such as polonium, and eventually super-heavy elements, which are produced at a one-atom-at-a-time rate.

We consider a sender-receiver game with an outside option for the sender. After the cheap talk phase, the receiver makes a proposal to the sender, which the latter can reject. We study situations in which the sender's approval is crucial to the receiver.We show that a partitional, (perfect Bayesian Nash) equilibrium exists if the sender has only two types or if the receiver's preferences over decisions do not depend on the type of the sender as long as the latter participates. The result does not extend: we construct a counter-example (with three types for the sender and type-dependent affine utility functions) in which there is no mixed equilibrium. In the three type case, we provide a full characterization of (possibly mediated) equilibria.

Given a normal subgroup bundle $\mathcal A$ of the isotropy bundle of a groupoid $\Sigma$, we obtain a twisted action of the quotient groupoid $\Sigma/\mathcal A$ on the bundle of group $C^*$-algebras determined by $\mathcal A$ whose twisted crossed product recovers the groupoid $C^*$-algebra $C^*(\Sigma)$. In this paper, we present an in-depth analysis of Navigation Among Movable Obstacles (NAMO) literature, notably highlighting that social acceptability remains an unadressed problem in this robotics navigation domain. The objectives of a Socially-Aware NAMO are defined and a first set of algorithmic propositions is built upon existing work. We developed a simulator allowing to test our propositions of social movability evaluation for obstacle selection, and social placement of objects with a semantic map layer. Preliminary pushing tests are done with a Pepper robot, the standard platform for the Robocup@home Social Standard Platform League, in the context of our participation (LyonTech Team).

The Wald test statistic has been shown to diverge (Dufour et al, 2013, 2017) under some conditions. This note links the divergence to eigenvalues of a polynomial matrix and establishes the divergence rate.

The magnetic order associated with the degree of freedom of spin in two-dimensional (2D) materials is subjected to intense investigation because of its potential application in 2D spintronics and valley-related magnetic phenomena. We report here a bottom-up strategy using molecular beam epitaxy to grow and dope large-area (cm$^2$) few-layer MoSe$_2$ with Mn as a magnetic dopant. High-quality Mn-doped MoSe$_2$ layers are obtained for Mn content of less than 5 % (atomic). When increasing the Mn content above 5 % we observe a clear transition from layer-by-layer to cluster growth. Magnetic measurements involving a transfer process of the cm$^2$-large doped layers on 100-micron-thick silicon substrate, show plausible proof of high-temperature ferromagnetism of 1 % and 10 % Mn-doped MoSe$_2$. Although we could not point to a correlation between magnetic and electrical properties, we demonstrate that the transfer process described in this report permits to achieve conventional electrical and magnetic measurements on the doped layers transferred on any substrate. Therefore, this study provides a promising route to characterize stable ferromagnetic 2D layers, which is broadening the current start-of-the-art of 2D materials-based applications., Comment: 18 pages and 5 figures

Large-area growth of continuous transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) layers is a prerequisite to transfer their exceptional electronic and optical properties into practical devices. It still represents an open issue nowadays. Electric and magnetic doping of TMDC layers to develop basic devices such as p-n junctions or diluted magnetic semiconductors for spintronic applications are also an important field of investigation. Here, we have developed two different techniques to grow MoSe$_2$ mono- and multi-layers on SiO$_2$/Si substrates over large areas. First, we co-deposited Mo and Se atoms on SiO$_2$/Si by molecular beam epitaxy in the van der Waals regime to obtain continuous MoSe$_2$ monolayers over 1 cm$^2$. To grow MoSe$_2$ multilayers, we then used the van der Waals solid phase epitaxy which consists in depositing an amorphous Se/Mo bilayer on top of a co-deposited MoSe$_2$ monolayer which serves as a van der Waals growth template. By annealing, we obtained continuous MoSe$_2$ multilayers over 1 cm$^2$. Moreover, by inserting a thin layer of Mn in the stack, we could demonstrate the incorporation of up to 10 \% of Mn in MoSe$_2$ bilayers., Comment: 32 pages, 13 figures

Zero-sum stochastic games generalize the notion of Markov Decision Processes (i.e. controlled Markov chains, or stochastic dynamic programming) to the 2-player competitive case : two players jointly control the evolution of a state variable, and have opposite interests. These notes constitute a short mathematical introduction to the theory of such games. Section 1 presents the basic model with finitely many states and actions. We give proofs of the standard results concerning : the existence and formulas for the values of the n-stage games, of the $\lambda$-discounted games, the convergence of these values when $\lambda$ goes to 0 (algebraic approach) and when n goes to +$\infty$, an important example called 'The Big Match' and the existence of the uniform value. Section 2 presents a short and subjective selection of related and more recent results : 1-player games (MDP) and the compact non expansive case, a simple compact continuous stochastic game with no asymptotic value, and the general equivalence between the uniform convergence of (v n) n and (v $\lambda$) $\lambda$.
