When a millimetric body is placed atop a vibrating liquid bath, the relative motion between the object and interface generates outward propagating waves with an associated momentum flux. Prior work has shown that isolated chiral objects, referred to as spinners, can thus rotate steadily in response to their self-generated wavefield. Here, we consider the case of two co-chiral spinners held at a fixed spacing from one another but otherwise free to interact hydrodynamically through their shared fluid substrate. Two identical spinners are able to synchronize their rotation, with their equilibrium phase difference sensitive to their spacing and initial conditions, and even cease to rotate when the coupling becomes sufficiently strong. Non-identical spinners can also find synchrony provided their intrinsic differences are not too disparate. A hydrodynamic wave model of the spinner interaction is proposed, recovering all salient features of the experiment. In all cases, the spatially periodic nature of the capillary wave coupling is directly reflected in the emergent equilibrium behaviors.

A macroscopic hydrodynamic system that couples a particle and a wave has recently renewed interest in the question as to what extent a classical system may reproduce quantum phenomena. Here we investigate single-particle diffraction with a pilot-wave model originally developed to describe the hydrodynamic system. We study single-particle interactions with a barrier and slits of increasing width by focusing on the near field. We find single-particle diffraction arising as wavelike patterns in the particles' position statistics, which we compare to the predictions of quantum mechanics. We provide a mechanism that rationalizes the diffractive behavior in our system.

When particles are deposited at a fluid interface they tend to aggregate by capillary attraction to minimize the overall potential energy of the system. In this work, we embed floating millimetric disks with permanent magnets to introduce a competing repulsion effect and study their pattern formation in equilibrium. The pairwise energy landscape of two disks is described by a short-range attraction and long-range repulsion (SALR) interaction potential, previously documented in a number of microscopic systems. Such competing interactions enable a variety of pairwise equilibrium states, including the possibility of a local minimum energy corresponding to a finite disk spacing. Two-dimensional (2D) experiments and simulations in confined geometries demonstrate that as the areal packing fraction is increased, the dilute repulsion-dominated lattice state becomes unstable to the spontaneous formation of localized clusters, which eventually merge into a system-spanning striped pattern. Finally, we demonstrate that the equilibrium pattern can be externally manipulated by the application of a supplemental vertical magnetic force that remotely enhances the effective capillary attraction.

We present and analyze a theoretical model for the dynamics and interactions of "capillary surfers," which are millimetric objects that self-propel while floating at the interface of a vibrating fluid bath. In our companion paper [1], we reported the results of an experimental investigation of the surfer system, which showed that surfer pairs may lock into one of seven bound states, and that larger collectives of surfers self-organize into coherent flocking states. Our theoretical model for the surfers' positional and orientational dynamics approximates a surfer as a pair of vertically oscillating point sources of weakly viscous gravity-capillary waves. We derive an analytical solution for the associated interfacial deformation and thus the hydrodynamic force exerted by one surfer on another. Our model recovers the bound states found in experiments and exhibits good quantitative agreement with experimental data. Moreover, a linear stability analysis shows that the bound states are quantized on the capillary wavelength, with stable branches of equilibria separated by unstable ones. Generally, our work shows that self-propelling objects coupled by interfacial flows constitute a promising platform for studying active matter systems in which both inertial and viscous effects are relevant.

We present an experimental study of capillary surfers, a new fluid-mediated active system that bridges the gap between dissipation- and inertia-dominated regimes. Surfers are wave-driven particles that self-propel and interact on a fluid interface via an extended field of surface waves. A surfer's speed and interaction with its environment can be tuned broadly through the particle, fluid, and vibration parameters. The wave nature of interactions among surfers allows for multistability of interaction modes and promises a number of novel collective behaviors., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

In most experimental studies, active drops propel in a liquid bulk due to self-generated interfacial stresses of solutal origin. Here, we demonstrate the self-propulsion of a volatile drop on the surface of a liquid bath due to stresses of thermal origin. Evaporative heat pumping is converted into directed motion driven by thermocapillary stresses, which emerge on the drop surface as a result of a symmetry breaking of the drop temperature field. The dependence of the drop speed on the activity source, i.e. the evaporation flux, is derived with scaling arguments and captures the experimental data., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Hydrodynamic instabilities are usually investigated in confined geometries where the resulting spatiotemporal pattern is constrained by the boundary conditions. Here we study the Faraday instability in domains with flexible boundaries. This is implemented by triggering this instability in floating fluid drops. An interaction of Faraday waves with the shape of the drop is observed, the radiation pressure of the waves exerting a force on the surface tension held boundaries. Two regimes are observed. In the first one there is a coadaptation of the wave pattern with the shape of the domain so that a steady configuration is reached. In the second one the radiation pressure dominates and no steady regime is reached. The drop stretches and ultimately breaks into smaller domains that have a complex dynamics including spontaneous propagation.
