Search

We describe a gyroscope that measures rotation based on the effects of the rotation on the polarization of light. Rotation induces a differential phase shift in the propagation of left and right circularly polarized light and this phase shift can be measured in suitably designed interferometric setups. The signal in this setup is independent of the frequency of light, unlike various sources of noise such as vibrations, which cause phase shifts that depend on the frequency. Such vibrations are the practical limit on the sensitivity of conventional Sagnac-style optical interferometers that are typically used as gyroscopes. In the proposed setup, one can potentially mitigate this source of noise by simultaneously using two (or more) sources of light that have different frequencies. The signal in this setup scales with the total storage time of the light. Due to its frequency independence, it is thus most optimal to measure the signal using superconducting RF systems where the high finesse of the available cavities enables considerably longer storage times than is possible in an optical setup., Comment: 15 pages, 1 figure

Despite having advantageous superconducting properties, Nb3Sn superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) cavities still have practical challenges compared to Nb SRF cavities due to the brittle nature of Nb3Sn. Performance degradation can occur when a Nb3Sn SRF cavity experiences mechanical stresses such as during handling and tuning of the cavity. In this study, we present a potential treatment for SRF cavities that have experienced stress induced performance degradation that involves a recoating procedure. The degraded cavity is coated with a small amount of Sn using a single step vapor-diffusion methodology. Using this approach we can recover a significant portion of the lost performance of a Nb3Sn SRF cavity.

The superconductor Nb$_3$Sn has a high critical temperature and high critical field, widely used for high-field superconducting magnets. In this work we investigate its microscopic electronic structure with $^{93}$Nb nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The high-quality Nb$_3$Sn powder sample was studied in both 3.2T and 7T magnetic fields in the temperature range from 1.5K to 300K. From measurement of the spectrum and its theoretical analysis, we find evidence for anisotropy despite its cubic crystal structure. This anisotropy is manifest in alignment of powder grains under certain temperature and field cycling conditions. The Knight shift and spin-lattice relaxation rate, $T_1^{-1}$, were measured in the normal state. Additionally, $T_1^{-1}$ was measured in the superconducting state and compared with BCS theory revealing a weak field dependence, with an energy gap $\Delta(0)=2.0\pm0.08k_B T_c$ at 3.2T and $\Delta(0)=1.73\pm0.08k_B T_c$ at 7T, indicating suppression of the order parameter by magnetic field.

Two 2.6 GHz SRF cavities are being used for a dark photon search at the vertical test stand (VTS) in FNAL, for the second phase of the Dark SRF experiment. During testing at 2 K the cavities experience frequency detuning caused by microphonics and slow frequency drifts. The experiment requires that the two cavities have the same frequency within the cavity's bandwidth. These two cavities are equipped with frequency tuners consisting of three piezo actuators. The piezo actuators are used for fine-fast frequency tuning. A proportional-integral (PI) loop utilizing the three piezos on the emitter was used to stabilize the cavity frequency and match the receiver cavity frequency. At FNAL two single cell 2.6 GHz SRF cavities are being used to search for dark photons, the experiment can be conducted at 2 K or in a dilution refrigerator. Precise frequency tuning is required for these two cavities so they can be matched in frequency. A cooling capacity constraint on the dilution refrigerator only allows piezo actuators to be part of the design of the 2.6 GHz cavity tuner. The tuner is equipped with three encapsulated piezos that deliver long and short-range frequency tuning. Modifications were implemented on the first tuner design due to the low forces on the piezos caused by the cavity. Three brass rods with Belleville washers were added to the design to increase the overall force on the piezos. We present the results of commissioning a dedicated furnace for Nb3Sn coatings of 2.6 GHz single cell cavities. Nb3Sn is a desired coating due to its high critical temperature and smaller surface resistance compared to bulk Nb. Usage of Nb3Sn coated cavities will greatly reduce operating costs due to decreased dependance on cryo cooling. Tin is deposited by use of a tin chloride nucleation agent and tin vapor diffusion. Analysis of the resultant coating was performed using SEM/EDS to verify successful formation of Nb3Sn. A 218 MHz quarter wave niobium cavity has been fabricated for the purpose of demonstrating Nb3Sn technology on a low-beta accelerator cavity. Niobiumtin has been established as a promising next generation SRF material, but development has focused primarily in high-beta elliptical cell cavities. This material has a significantly higher TC than niobium, allowing for design of higher frequency quarter wave cavities (that are subsequently smaller) as well as for significantly lowered cooling requirements (possibly leading to cryocooler based designs). Two CEBAF 5-cell accelerator cavities have been coated with Nb3Sn film using the vapor diffusion technique. One cavity was coated in the Jefferson Lab Nb3Sn cavity coating system, and the other in the Fermilab Nb3Sn coating system. Both cavities were measured at 4 K and 2 K in the vertical dewar test in each lab and then assembled into a cavity pair at Jefferson Lab. Previous attempts to assemble Nb3Sn cavities into a cavity pair degraded the superconducting properties of Nb3Sn-coated cavities. This contribution discusses the efforts to identify and mitigate the pair assembly challenges and will present the results of the vertical tests before and after pair assembly. Traveling wave SRF accelerating structures offer several advantages over the traditional standing wave structures: substantially lower $H_pk/E_acc$ and lower $E_pk/E_acc$, ratios of peak magnetic field and peak electric field to the accelerating gradient, respectively, together with substantially higher $R/Q$. In this paper we discuss how a linear collider Higgs Factory HELEN can be built using TW-based SRF linacs. Multipacting (MP) is a phenomenon which can affect stability in particle accelerators and limit performance in superconducting radio frequency cavities. In the TESLA shaped, 1.3 GHz, 9-cell cavities used in the LCLS-II (L2) and LCLS-II-HE (HE) projects, the MP-band (~17-24 MV/m) lies within the required accelerating gradients. For HE, the operating gradient of 20.8 MV/m lies well within the MP-band and cryomodule testing has confirmed that this is an issue. As such, MP processing for the HE cryomodule test program will be discussed. Early results on MP processing in cryomodules installed in the L2 linac will also be presented, demonstrating that the methods used in cryomodule acceptance testing are also successful at conditioning MP in the accelerator and that this processing is preserved in the mid-term., Comment: 21st Intl Conf Radio Frequency Superconductivity (SRF 2023)

High-quality cavities are crucial for various fundamental physical studies and applications. Here we find that by coupling two cavities directly or via a phase-tunable coupling channel, the photon lifetime of the local field can exceed that of the bare cavities. The cavity photon lifetime is modified by the phases of the initial states and the phase accumulation on the coupling channel which affect the interference between cavities. In experiments, by coupling superconducting radio-frequency cavities via phase-tunable cables, we realize a factor of two improvement in the cavity photon lifetime. In this study we will show a new method of polishing for Nb3Sn cavities known as centrifugal barrel polishing (CBP). Using this method, Nb3Sn coated samples are polished to a surface roughness comparable to a traditional Nb cavity after electropolishing (EP). We also investigate different methods of cleaning the Nb3Sn surface after CBP to remove residual abrasive particles. The polished Nb3Sn surface is analyzed using confocal laser microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is used to image the surface and measure the surface roughness after polishing. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is also used for high resolution analysis of the surface after polishing. Finally, we show that centrifugal barrel polishing can improve the performance of a Nb3Sn SRF cavity.

We propose a novel search technique for axions with a $CP$-violating monopole coupling $\tilde{g}_Q$ to bulk Standard Model charges $Q \in \{B,L,B-L\}$. Gradients in the static axion field configurations sourced by matter induce achromatic circular photon birefringence via the axion-photon coupling $g_{\phi\gamma}$. Circularly polarized light fed into an optical or (open) radio-frequency (RF) Fabry-P\'erot (FP) cavity develops a phase shift that accumulates up to the cavity finesse: the fixed axion spatial gradient prevents a cancellation known to occur for an axion dark-matter search. The relative phase shift between two FP cavities fed with opposite circular polarizations can be detected interferometrically. This time-independent signal can be modulated up to non-zero frequency by altering the cavity orientations with respect to the field gradient. Multi-wavelength co-metrology techniques can be used to address chromatic measurement systematics and noise sources. With Earth as the axion source, we project reach beyond current constraints on the product of couplings $\tilde{g}_Q g_{\phi\gamma}$ for axion masses $m_{\phi} \lesssim 10^{-5} \mathrm{eV}$. If shot-noise-limited sensitivity can be achieved, an experiment using high-finesse RF FP cavities could reach a factor of $\sim 10^{5}$ into new parameter space for $\tilde{g}_Q g_{\phi\gamma}$ for masses $m_\phi \lesssim 4\times 10^{-11} \mathrm{eV}$., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures. This contribution discusses the results of an in-situ angular XPS study on the thermal evolution of the native oxide layer on Nb3Sn and pure Nb. XPS data were recorded with conventional spectrometers using an AlK(alpha) X-ray source for spectra collected up to 600 C, and an MgK(Alpha) X-rays source for temperatures above 600 C. The effect of the thickness, composition, and thermal stability of that oxide layer is relevant to understanding the functional properties of superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) cavities used in particle accelerators. There is a consensus that oxide plays a role in surface resistance (Rs). The focus of this study is Nb3Sn, which is a promising material that is used in the manufacturing of superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) cavities as well as in quantum sensing, and pure Nb, which was included in the study for comparison. The thermal evolution of the oxide layer in these two materials is found to be quite different, which is ascribed to the influence of the Sn atom on the reactivity of the Nb atom in Nb3Sn films. Nb and Sn atoms in this intermetallic solid have different electronegativity, and the Sn atom can reduce electron density around neighbouring Nb atoms in the solid, thus reducing their reactivity for oxygen. This is shown in the thickness, composition, and thermal stability of the oxide layer formed on Nb3Sn. The XPS spectra were complemented by grazing incident XRD patterns collected using the ESRF synchrotron radiation facility. The results discussed herein shed light on oxide evolution in the Nb3Sn compound and guide its processing for potential applications of the Nb3Sn-based SRF cavities in accelerators and other superconducting devices.

A series of experiments were carried out in an effort to develop a simple method for predicting magnetic flux expulsion behavior of high purity niobium used to fabricate superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavities. Using conventional metallographic characterizations in conjunction with high spatial resolution electron backscattered diffraction-orientation imaging microscopy (EBSD-OIM), we found that the flux expulsion behavior of 1.3 GHz single cell SRF Nb cavities is significantly associated with the grain growth of the Nb material during heat treatment. Most of Nb grains rapidly grew during 900C heat treatment, and likely full-recrystallized with 1000C HT. With comparison of the magnetic flux expulsion ratio (Bsc/Bnc) at dT = 5 K, the flux expulsion efficiency of the cavities increases along with increasing of grain size. Most interestingly, 900C HT shows a roughly linear trend that suggests this criterion could be used to predict appropriate heat treatment temperature for sufficient flux expulsion behavior in SRF-grade Nb. This result would be used to see if flux expulsion can be predicted by examining the materials coming from the Nb vendor, prior to cavity fabrication.

We conduct the first ``light-shining-through-wall" (LSW) search for dark photons using two state-of-the-art high quality-factor superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavities and report the results of its pathfinder run. Our new experimental setup enables improvements in sensitivity over previous searches and covers new dark photon parameter space. We design delicate calibration and measurement protocols to utilize the high-$Q$ setup at Dark SRF. Using cavities operating at $1.3 \ \text{GHz}$, we establish a new exclusion limit for kinetic mixing as small as {$\epsilon= 1.6\times 10^{-9}$} and provide the world's best constraints on dark photons in the $2.1\times 10^{-7} \ \text{eV} - 5.7\times10^{-6} \ \text{eV}$ mass range. Our result is the first proof-of-concept for the enabling role of SRF cavities in LSW setups, with ample opportunities for further improvements. In addition, our data sets a competitive lab-based limit on the Standard Model photon mass by searching for longitudinal photon polarization.

A multi-TeV muon collider offers a spectacular opportunity in the direct exploration of the energy frontier. Offering a combination of unprecedented energy collisions in a comparatively clean leptonic environment, a high energy muon collider has the unique potential to provide both precision measurements and the highest energy reach in one machine that cannot be paralleled by any currently available technology. The topic generated a lot of excitement in Snowmass meetings and continues to attract a large number of supporters, including many from the early career community. In light of this very strong interest within the US particle physics community, Snowmass Energy, Theory and Accelerator Frontiers created a cross-frontier Muon Collider Forum in November of 2020. The Forum has been meeting on a monthly basis and organized several topical workshops dedicated to physics, accelerator technology, and detector R&D. Findings of the Forum are summarized in this report.

This paper discusses recently proposed Higgs Energy LEptoN (HELEN) $e+e-$ linear collider based on advances in superconducting radio frequency technology. The collider offers cost and AC power savings, smaller footprint (relative to the ILC), and could be built at Fermilab with an interaction region within the site boundaries. After the initial physics run at 250 GeV, the collider could be upgraded either to higher luminosity or to higher (up to 500 GeV) energies.

The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) is an X-ray science facility at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. The LCLS-II project (an upgrade to LCLS) is in the commissioning phase; the LCLS-II-HE (High Energy) project is another upgrade to the facility, enabling higher energy operation. An electron beam is accelerated using superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavities built into cryomodules. It is planned to build 24 1.3 GHz standard cryomodules and one 1.3 GHz single-cavity Buncher Capture Cavity (BCC) cryomodule for the LCLS-II-HE project. Fourteen of these standard cryomodules and the BCC are planned to be assembled and tested at Fermilab. Procurements for standard cryomodule components are nearing completion. The first LCLS-II-HE cryomodule, referred to as the verification cryomodule (vCM) was assembled and tested at Fermilab. Fermilab has completed the assembly of the second cryomodule. This paper presents LCLS-II-HE cryomodule production status at Fermilab, emphasizing the changes done based on the successes, challenges, mitigations, and lessons learned from LCLS-II; validation of the changes with the excellent vCM results.

Accelerator radio frequency (RF) technology has been and remains critical for modern high energy physics (HEP) experiments based on particle accelerators. Tremendous progress in advancing this technology has been achieved over the past decade in several areas highlighted in this report. These achievements and new results expected from continued R&D efforts could pave the way for upgrades of existing facilities, improvements to accelerators already under construction (e.g., PIP-II), well-developed proposals (e.g., ILC, CLIC), and/or enable concepts under development, such as FCC-ee, CEPC, C3, HELEN, multi-MW Fermilab Proton Intensity Upgrade, future Muon Colloder, etc. Advances in RF technology have impact beyond HEP on accelerators built for nuclear physics, basic energy sciences, and other areas. Recent examples of such accelerators are European XFEL, LCLS-II and LCLS-II-HE, SHINE, SNS, ESS, FRIB, and EIC. To support and enable new accelerator-based applications and even make some of them feasible, we must continue addressing their challenges via a comprehensive RF R&D program that would advance the existing RF technologies and explore the nascent ones., Comment: contribution to Snowmass 2021

Increasing the Fermilab Main Injector (MI) beam power above ~1.2 MW requires replacement of the 8 GeV Booster by a higher intensity alternative. Earlier, rapid-cycling synchrotron and linac solutions were considered for this purpose. In this paper, we consider the linac version that produces 8 GeV H- beam for injection into the Recycler Ring (RR) or MI The new linac takes ~1 GeV beam from the PIP-II linac and accelerates it to ~ 2 GeV in a 650 MHz SRF linac, and then accelerates to ~8 GeV in an SRF pulsed linac using 1300 MHz cryomodules. The linac components incorporate recent improvements in SRF technology. The LCLS-II HE superconducting linac can produce multi-energy beams by supporting multiple undulator lines simultaneously. This could be achieved by using the cavity SRF tuner in the off-frequency detune mode. This off-frequency operation method was tested in the verification cryomodule (vCM) and CM 1 at Fermilab at 2 K. In both cases, the tuners achieved a frequency shift of -565$\pm$80 kHz. This study will discuss cavity frequency during each step as it is being assembled in the cryomodule string and finally when it is being tested at 2 K. Tracking the cavity frequency helped enable the tuners to reach this large frequency shift. The specific procedures of tuner setting during assembly will be presented.

Microphonics causes the cavity to detune. This study discusses the microphonics of sixteen 1.3 GHz cryomodules, 14 for LCLS-II and 2 for LCLS-II HE tested at CMTF. The peak detuning, as well as the RMS detuning for each cryomodule, will be discussed. For each cryomodule, the data was taken with enough soaking time to prevent any thermalization effects which can show up in the detuning. Each data capture taken was 30 minutes or longer and sampled at 1 kHz.

Wavelike, bosonic dark matter candidates like axions and dark photons can be detected using microwave cavities known as haloscopes. Traditionally, haloscopes consist of tunable copper cavities operating in the TM$_{010}$ mode, but ohmic losses have limited their performance. In contrast, superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavities can achieve quality factors of $\sim 10^{10}$, perhaps five orders of magnitude better than copper cavities, leading to more sensitive dark matter detectors. In this paper, we first derive that the scan rate of a haloscope experiment is proportional to the loaded quality factor $Q_L$, even if the cavity bandwidth is much narrower than the dark matter halo line shape. We then present a proof-of-concept search for dark photon dark matter using a nontunable ultrahigh quality SRF cavity. We exclude dark photon dark matter with kinetic mixing strengths of $\chi > 1.5\times 10^{-16}$ for a dark photon mass of $m_{A^{\prime}} = 5.35\mu$eV, achieving the deepest exclusion to wavelike dark photons by almost an order of magnitude., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures

The Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems center is developing searches for dark photons, axions and ALPs with the goal of improving upon the current state-of-the-art sensitivity. These efforts leverage on Fermi National Accelerator expertise on ultra-high quality factor superconducting radio frequency cavities combined with the center research on quantum technology. Here we focus on multiple axion searches that utilize ~1E10 quality factor superconducting radio frequency cavities and their resonant modes to enhance the production and/or detection of axions in the cavity volume. In addition, we present preliminary results of single-mode and multi-mode nonlinearity measurements that were carried out as part of an experimental feasibility study to gain insight on the behavior of the ultra-high quality factor resonators and the experimental RF system in the regime relevant for axion searches., Comment: 6 pages, 9 figures

We introduce AVCAffe, the first Audio-Visual dataset consisting of Cognitive load and Affect attributes. We record AVCAffe by simulating remote work scenarios over a video-conferencing platform, where subjects collaborate to complete a number of cognitively engaging tasks. AVCAffe is the largest originally collected (not collected from the Internet) affective dataset in English language. We recruit 106 participants from 18 different countries of origin, spanning an age range of 18 to 57 years old, with a balanced male-female ratio. AVCAffe comprises a total of 108 hours of video, equivalent to more than 58,000 clips along with task-based self-reported ground truth labels for arousal, valence, and cognitive load attributes such as mental demand, temporal demand, effort, and a few others. We believe AVCAffe would be a challenging benchmark for the deep learning research community given the inherent difficulty of classifying affect and cognitive load in particular. Moreover, our dataset fills an existing timely gap by facilitating the creation of learning systems for better self-management of remote work meetings, and further study of hypotheses regarding the impact of remote work on cognitive load and affective states., Comment: Accepted in AAAI 2023

Niobium is commonly used for superconducting quantum systems as readout resonators, capacitors, and interconnects. The coherence time of the superconducting qubits is mainly limited by microwave dissipation attributed to two-level system defects at interfaces, such as the Nb/Si and Nb/air interface. One way to improve the Nb/air interface quality is by thermal annealing, as shown by extensive studies in 3D superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavities. However, it is unclear how the microstructure and chemistry of the interface structures change during heat treatment. To address this knowledge gap, we comprehensively characterized Nb films deposited on Si wafers by physical vapor deposition, including (1) an Nb film from a transmon and (2) an Nb film without any patterning step, using an aberration-corrected transmission electron microscope. Both Nb films exhibit columnar growth with strong [110] textures. There is a double layer between the Nb film and Si substrate, which are amorphous niobium silicides with different Nb and Si concentrations. After in-situ heating of the heterostructure at 360{\deg}C inside the microscope, the composition of the double layers at the Nb-Si interface remains almost the same despite different thickness changes. The initial amorphous niobium oxide layer on Nb surface decomposes into face-centered cubic Nb nanograins in the amorphous Nb-O matrix upon heating.

Radio frequency superconductivity is a cornerstone technology for many future HEP particle accelerators and experiments from colliders to proton drivers for neutrino facilities to searches for dark matter. While the performance of superconducting RF (SRF) cavities has improved significantly over the last decades, and the SRF technology has enabled new applications, the proposed HEP facilities and experiments pose new challenges. To address these challenges, the field continues to generate new ideas and there seems to be a vast room for improvements. This is a Snowmass white paper on the utility of existing and future superconducting cavities to probe fundamental physics. Superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavity technology has seen tremendous progress in the past decades, as a tool for accelerator science. With advances spear-headed by the SQMS center at Fermilab, they are now being brought to the quantum regime becoming a tool in quantum science thanks to the high degree of coherence. The same high quality factor can be leveraged in the search for new physics, including searches for new particles, dark matter, including the QCD axion, and gravitational waves. We survey some of the physics opportunities and the required directions of R&D. Field emission (FE) is one of the main limiting factors of superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities operating in accelerators and it occurs whenever contaminants, like dust, metal flakes or even absorbates, are present on the surface of the cavity high electric field region. Field emission reduces the maximum achievable accelerating field and generates free electrons that may interact with the beam, damage or activate the beamline. One practical method that can be used to mitigate this problem is in-situ plasma cleaning, or plasma processing. The development of a processing that can be applied in-situ is extremely advantageous, since it enables the recovery of the cryomodule performance without the need of disassembling the whole cryomodule, which is an extremely expensive and time-consuming process. On the other hand, plasma processing only requires the cryomodule warm-up to room-temperature and the subsequent processing of the contaminated cavities. The entire process is reasonably quick and involves a limited number of personnel. For these reasons we would like to advocate for continuing to invest in the R\&D of plasma processing to optimize its applicability in cryomodules and for extending the technique to other frequency ranges and cavities geometries., Comment: contribution to Snowmass 2021

The United States has a rich history in high energy particle accelerators and colliders -- both lepton and hadron machines, which have enabled several major discoveries in elementary particle physics. To ensure continued progress in the field, U.S. leadership as a key partner in building next generation collider facilities abroad is essential; also critically important is the exploring of options to host a future collider in the U.S. The "Snowmass" study and the subsequent Particle Physics Project Prioritization Panel (P5) process provide the timely opportunity to develop strategies for both. What we do now will shape the future of our field and whether the U.S. will remain a world leader in these areas. In this white paper, we briefly discuss the US engagement in proposed collider projects abroad and describe future collider options for the U.S. We also call for initiating an integrated R\&D program for future colliders., Comment: Contribution to Snowmass 2021

The International Linear Collider (ILC) is on the table now as a new global energy-frontier accelerator laboratory taking data in the 2030s. The ILC addresses key questions for our current understanding of particle physics. It is based on a proven accelerator technology. Its experiments will challenge the Standard Model of particle physics and will provide a new window to look beyond it. Nb3Sn superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) cavities have substantial potential for enabling new performance capabilities for particle accelerators for high energy physics (HEP), as well as for RF cavity-based detectors for dark matter, gravitational waves, and other quantum sensing applications. Outside of HEP, Nb3Sn SRF cavities can also benefit accelerators for nuclear physics, basic energy sciences, and the industry. Following the PIP-II 800 MeV Linac, Fermilab will need an accelerator that extends from that linac to the MI injection energy of ~8 GeV, completing the modernization of the Fermilab high-intensity accelerator complex. This will maximize the beam available for neutrino production for the long baseline DUNE experiment to greater than 2.5 MW and enable a next generation of intensity frontier experiments. In this white paper, we propose an 8 GeV Linac for that purpose. The Linac consists of an extension of the PIP-II Linac to ~2 GeV using PIP-II 650 MHz SRF cryomodules, followed by a 2 -->8.0 GeV Linac composed of 1300 MHz SRF cryomodules, based upon the LCLS-II cryomodules developed at Fermilab. The 8 GeV Linac will incorporate recent improvements in SRF technology. The research needed to implement this Linac is described., Comment: contribution to Snowmass 2021

In dark matter searches using axion haloscopes, the search sensitivity depends on the quality factors ($Q_0$) of radiofrequency cavities immersed in multi-tesla magnetic fields. Increasing $Q_0$ would increase the scan rate through the parameter space of interest. Researchers developing superconducting radiofrequency cavities for particle accelerators have developed methods for obtaining extremely high $Q_0\sim10^{11}$ in $\mu$T-scale magnetic fields. In this paper, we describe efforts to develop high Q cavities made from Nb$_3$Sn films using a technique developed for particle accelerator cavities. Geometry optimization for this application is explored, and two cavities are tested: an existing particle accelerator-style cavity and a geometry developed and fabricated for use in high fields. A quality factor of ($5.3\pm0.3$)$\times 10^5$ is obtained at 3.9~GHz and 6~T at 4.2~K.

Plasma cleaning is a technique that can be applied in superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities in situ in cryomodules in order to decrease their level of field emission. We developed the technique for the Linac Coherent Light Source II (LCLS-II) cavities and we present in this paper the full development and application of plasma processing to the LCLS-II High Energy (HE) verification cryomodule (vCM). We validated our plasma processing procedure on the vCM, fully processing four out of eight cavities of this CM, demonstrating that cavities performance were preserved in terms of both accelerating field and quality factor. Applying plasma processing to this clean, record breaking cryomodule also showed that no contaminants were introduced in the string, maintaining the vCM field emission-free up to the maximum field reached by each cavity. We also found that plasma processing eliminates multipacting (MP) induced quenches that are typically observed frequently within the MP band field range. This suggests that plasma processing could be employed in situ in CMs to mitigate both field emission and multipacting, significantly decreasing the testing time of cryomodules, the linac commissioning time and cost and increasing the accelerator reliability., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures

An 8-cavity, 1.3 GHz, LCLS-II-HE cryomodule was assembled and tested at Fermilab to verify performance before the start of production. Its cavities were processed with a novel nitrogen doping treatment to improve gradient performance. The cryomodule was tested with a modified protocol to process sporadic quenches, which were observed in LCLS-II production cryomodules and are attributed to multipacting. Dedicated vertical test experiments support the attribution to multipacting. The verification cryomodule achieved an acceleration voltage of 200 MV in continuous wave mode, corresponding to an average accelerating gradient of 24.1 MV/m, significantly exceeding the specification of 173 MV. The average Q0 (3.0x10^10) also exceeded its specification (2.7x10^10). After processing, no field emission was observed up to the maximum gradient of each cavity. SRF cavities for particle acceleration are conventionally operated immersed in a bath of liquid helium at 4.2 K and below. Although this cooling configuration is practically and economically viable for large scientific accelerator installations, it may not be so for smaller accelerators intended for industrial applications such as the treatment of wastewater, sludge, flue gases, etc. In this paper, we describe a procedure to operate SRF cavities without liquid helium that can be used to construct electron-beam sources for industrial applications of electron irradiation (1-10 MeV electron energy). In this procedure, an elliptical single-cell 650 MHz niobium-tin coated niobium cavity is coupled to a closed-cycle 4 K cryocooler using high purity aluminum thermal links. The cryocooler conductively extracts heat (RF dissipation) from the cavity without requiring liquid helium around the cavity. We present construction details of this cryocooler conduction-cooling technique and systematic experiments that have demonstrated ~10 MV/m cw gradient on the cavity. By straightforward scaling up the cavity length and number of cryocoolers, the technique will provide the complete range of 1-10 MeV electron energy for industrial applications.

$Nb_{3}Sn$ performance in RF fields is limited to fields far below its superheating critical field. Poor thermal conductivity of $Nb_{3}Sn$ has been speculated to be the reason behind this limit. In order to better understand the contribution of $Nb_{3}Sn$ thermal conductivity to its RF performance, we simulated numerically with Matlab program*(based on SRIMP and HEAT codes) the limiting fields under different realistic conditions. Our simulations indicate that limiting fields observed presently in the experiments with RF fields cannot be explained by the thermal impedance of $Nb_{3}Sn$ alone. The results change significantly in the presence of higher losses due to extrinsic mechanisms.

Nb3Sn is a promising next-generation material for superconducting radiofrequency cavities, with significant potential for both large scale and compact accelerator applications. However, so far, Nb3Sn cavities have been limited to cw accelerating fields <18 MV/m. In this paper, new results are presented with significantly higher fields, as high as 24 MV/m in single cell cavities. Results are also presented from the first ever Nb3Sn-coated 1.3 GHz 9-cell cavity, a full-scale demonstration on the cavity type used in production for the European XFEL and LCLS-II. Results are presented together with heat dissipation curves to emphasize the potential for industrial accelerator applications using cryocooler-based cooling systems. The cavities studied have an atypical shiny visual appearance, and microscopy studies of witness samples reveal significantly reduced surface roughness and smaller film thickness compared to typical Nb3Sn films for superconducting cavities. Possible mechanisms for increased maximum field are discussed as well as implications for physics of RF superconductivity in the low coherence length regime. Outlook for continued development is presented.

Nb$_3$Sn is a promising advanced material under development for superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) cavities. Past efforts have been focused primarily on small development-scale cavities, but large, often multi-celled cavities, are needed for particle accelerator applications. In this work, we report on successful Nb$_3$Sn coatings on Nb in a 1 m-long 9-cell Nb sample-host cavity at Fermilab. The geometry of the first coating with only one Sn source made it possible to study the influence of Sn flux on the microstructure. Based on these results, we postulate a connection between recently observed anomalously large thin grains and uncovered niobium spots observed in the past by other authors [Trenikhina 2018]. A phenomenological model to explain how these anomalously large grains could form is proposed. This model is invoked to provide possible explanations for literature results from several groups and to guide key process parameters to achieve uniform vapor-diffusion coatings, when applied to complex structures as the multi-cell cavity under study.

We study mechanisms of vortex nucleation in Nb$_3$Sn Superconducting RF (SRF) cavities using a combination of experimental, theoretical, and computational methods. Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) image and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) of some Nb$_3$Sn cavities show Sn segregation at grain boundaries in Nb$_3$Sn with Sn concentration as high as $\sim$35 at.\% and widths $\sim$3 nm in chemical composition. Using ab initio calculations, we estimate the effect excess tin has on the local superconducting properties of the material. We model Sn segregation as a lowering of the local critical temperature. We then use time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory to understand the role of segregation on magnetic vortex nucleation. Our simulations indicate that the grain boundaries act as both nucleation sites for vortex penetration and pinning sites for vortices after nucleation. Depending on the magnitude of the applied field, vortices may remain pinned in the grain boundary or penetrate the grain itself. We estimate the superconducting losses due to vortices filling grain boundaries and compare with observed performance degradation with higher magnetic fields. We estimate that the quality factor may decrease by an order of magnitude ($10^{10}$ to $10^9$) at typical operating fields if 0.03\% of the grain boundaries actively nucleate vortices. We additionally estimate the volume that would need to be filled with vortices to match experimental observations of cavity heating.

We demonstrate practical accelerating gradients on a superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) accelerator cavity with cryocooler conduction cooling, a cooling technique that does not involve the complexities of the conventional liquid helium bath. A design is first presented that enables conduction cooling an elliptical-cell SRF cavity. Implementing this design, a single cell 650 MHz Nb3Sn cavity coupled using high purity aluminum thermal links to a 4 K pulse tube cryocooler generated accelerating gradients up to 6.6 MV/m at 100% duty cycle. The experiments were carried out with the cavity-cryocooler assembly in a simple vacuum vessel, completely free of circulating liquid cryogens. We anticipate that this cryocooling technique will make the SRF technology accessible to interested accelerator researchers who lack access to full-stack helium cryogenic systems. Furthermore, the technique can lead to SRF based compact sources of high average power electron beams for environmental protection and industrial applications. A concept of such an SRF compact accelerator is presented.

In this paper, we address the possibility of upgrading the ILC250 luminosity to $8.1 \times 10^{34}$, so that with the polarization feature, the effective luminosity will be $2.0 \times 10^{35}$ to compete with the FCC-ee luminosity and two detectors. The additional cost of the higher luminosity option will be about 2.2 B ILCU. The total cost for the ILC high luminosity machine will therefore be about 7.7 B versus FCC-ee 10.5 B. The AC power (267 MW) to operate the ILC luminosity upgrade will also be less than the AC power for FCC-ee (300 MW). Even with a modest quality factor Q of $1 \times 10^{10}$ for SRF cavities, the total cost of the upgrade will be 2.5 B ILCU additional over ILC250 baseline. We expect that, if approved, ILC250 will first be built at the baseline luminosity, operated for many years at this luminosity, and later upgraded to the high luminosity option. A significant part (RF power and cryo-power) of the additional cost for the luminosity upgrade overlaps with the expected additional costs for anticipated energy upgrade paths. A second ILC upgrade discussed in this paper will be to the higher energy Top Factory at 380 GeV. We also estimate the additional cost of this upgrade (1.5 B ILCU).

We report on atomic-scale analyses of grain boundary (GB) structures and segregation in Nb3Sn coatings on Nb, prepared by the vapor-diffusion process, for superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) cavity applications, utilizing atom-probe tomography, high-resolution scanning transmission electron-microscopy and first-principles calculations. We demonstrate that the chemical composition of Nb3Sn GBs is correlated strongly with the diffusion of Sn and Nb at GBs during the coating process. In a sample coated with a relatively large Sn flux, we observe an interfacial width of Sn segregation at a GB of ~3 nm, with a maximum concentration of ~35 at.%. After post-annealing at 1100 oC for 3 h, the Sn segregated at GBs disappears and Nb segregation is observed subsequently at GBs, indicating that Nb diffused into the Nb3Sn GBs from the Nb substrate. It is also demonstrated that the amount of Sn segregation in a Nb3Sn coating can be controlled by: (i) Sn flux; and (ii) the temperatures of the Nb substrates and Sn source, which may affect the overall kinetics including GB diffusion of Sn and Nb. An investigation of the correlation between the chemical compositions of GBs and Nb3Sn SRF cavity performance reveals that the Nb3Sn SRF cavities with the best performance (high-quality factors at high accelerating electric-field gradients) do not exhibit Sn segregation at GBs. Our results suggest that the chemical compositions of GBs in Nb3Sn coatings for SRF cavities can be controlled by GB engineering and can be utilized to optimize fabrication of high-quality Nb3Sn coatings for SRF cavities.

We report on an effort to improve the performance of superconducting radiofrequency cavities by the use of heat treatment in a temperature range sufficient to dissociate the natural surface oxide. We find that the residual resistance is significantly decreased, and we find an unexpected reduction in the BCS resistance. Together these result in extremely high quality factor values at relatively large accelerating fields Eacc ~20 MV/m: Q0 of 3-4x10^11 at <1.5 K and Q0 ~5x10^10 at 2.0 K. In one cavity, measurements of surface resistance versus temperature showed an extremely small residual resistance of just 0.63+/-0.06 nOhms at 16 MV/m. SIMS measurements confirm that the oxide was significantly dissociated, but they also show the presence of nitrogen after heat treatment. We also present studies of surface oxidation via exposure to air and to water, as well as the effects of very light surface removal via HF rinse. When a superconducting radiofrequency cavity is cooled through its critical temperature, ambient magnetic flux can become "frozen in" to the superconductor, resulting in degradation of the quality factor. This is especially problematic in applications where quality factor is a cost driver, such as in the CW linac for LCLS-II. Previously, it had been unknown how to prevent flux from being trapped during cooldown in bulk niobium cavities, but recent R&D studies showed near-full flux expulsion can be achieved through high temperature heat treatment and cooling cavities through the superconducting transition with a spatial thermal gradient over the surface. In this paper, we describe the first accelerator implementation of these procedures, in cryomodules that are currently being produced for LCLS-II. We compare the performance of cavities under different conditions of heat treatment and thermal gradient during cooldown, showing a substantial improvement in performance when both are applied, enabling cryomodules to reach and, in many cases, exceed a Q0 of ~3x10^10., Comment: 11 pages

Nb$_3$Sn is currently the most promising material other than niobium for future superconducting radiofrequency cavities. Critical fields above 120 mT in pulsed operation and about 80 mT in CW have been achieved in cavity tests. This is large compared to the lower critical field as derived from the London penetration depth, extracted from low field surface impedance measurements. In this paper direct measurements of the London penetration depth from which the lower critical field and the superheating field are derived are presented. The field of first vortex penetration is measured under DC and RF fields. The combined results confirm that Nb$_3$Sn cavities are indeed operated in a metastable state above the lower critical field but are currently limited to a critical field well below the superheating field.

Very high quality factor superconducting radio frequency cavities developed for accelerators can enable fundamental physics searches with orders of magnitude higher sensitivity, as well as offer a path to a 1000-fold increase in the achievable coherence times for cavity-stored quantum states in the 3D circuit QED architecture. Here we report the first measurements of multiple accelerator cavities of $f_0=$1.3, 2.6, 5 GHz resonant frequencies down to temperatures of about 10~mK and field levels down to a few photons, which reveal record high photon lifetimes up to 2 seconds, while also further exposing the role of the two level systems (TLS) in the niobium oxide. We also demonstrate how the TLS contribution can be greatly suppressed by the vacuum heat treatments at 340-450$^\circ$C., Comment: revised version
