Elucidating the factors limiting quantum coherence in real materials is essential to the development of quantum technologies. Here we report a strategic approach to determine the effect of lattice dynamics on spin coherence lifetimes using oxygen deficient double perovskites as host materials. In addition to obtaining millisecond $T_1$ spin-lattice lifetimes at T ~ 10 K, measurable quantum superpositions were observed up to room temperature. We determine that $T_2$ enhancement in $Sr_2CaWO_{6-\delta}$ over previously studied $Ba_2CaWO_{6-\delta}$ is caused by a dynamically-driven increase in effective site symmetry around the dominant paramagnetic site, assigned as $W^{5+}$ via electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. Further, a combination of experimental and computational techniques enabled quantification of the relative strength of spin-phonon coupling of each phonon mode. We have explored the relaxation process of the spin glass phase in Bi$_2$Fe$_3$GaO$_9$, a geometrically frustrated magnet with a unique structure consisting of pentagonal building blocks known as the Cairo lattice. Using dc magnetization measurements on single crystals, we estimate the relaxation time across various temperatures and fields. Our results indicate that the relaxation time of Bi$_2$Fe$_3$GaO$_9$ follows the Arrhenius law as a function of temperature but remains relatively constant as the applied magnetic field varies. Further, through a carefully designed protocol, we observe significant rejuvenation and memory effects. Remarkably, the memory effects in Bi$_2$Fe$_3$GaO$_9$ are found to be more similar to those observed in classical spin glasses rather than in spin jamming systems, both in terms of the magnitude of the memory effect and the value of the exponent that describes the relaxation behavior. Our findings suggest that Bi$_2$Fe$_3$GaO$_9$ provides an excellent platform for investigating the time-dependent evolution of underlying magnetism using neutron scattering, paving the way for future research., Comment: 7 figures

The quasiharmonic approximation is the most common method for modeling the specific heat of solids; however, it fails to capture the effects of intrinsic anharmonicity in phonons. In this study, we introduce the "elastic softening approximation," an alternative approach to modelling intrinsic anharmonic effects on thermodynamic quantities which is grounded in Wallace's thermodynamic framework (Thermodynamics of Crystals, 1972) and focused on tracking entropy changes due to the continuous softening of phonons as a function of temperature. A key finding of our study is a direct correlation between Poisson's ratio and the differential rate of phonon softening at finite frequencies, compared to lower frequencies relevant to elastic moduli measurements. We observe that elemental solids such as alpha-Be, diamond, Al, Cu, In, W, Au, and Pb, which span a wide range of Poisson's ratios and exhibit varying degrees of intrinsic anharmonicity, consistently follow this trend. When applied to alpha-U, alpha-Pu, and delta-Pu, our method reveals unusually large anharmonic phonon contributions at elevated temperatures across all three light actinide metals. Calibrating the time-dependent Implied Volatility Surface (IVS) using sparse market data is an essential challenge in computational finance, particularly for real-time applications. This task requires not only fitting market data but also satisfying a specified partial differential equation (PDE) and no-arbitrage conditions modelled by differential inequalities. This paper proposes a novel Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) approach called Whack-a-mole Online Learning (WamOL) to address this multi-objective optimisation problem. WamOL integrates self-adaptive and auto-balancing processes for each loss term, efficiently reweighting objective functions to ensure smooth surface fitting while adhering to PDE and no-arbitrage constraints and updating for intraday predictions. In our experiments, WamOL demonstrates superior performance in calibrating intraday IVS from uneven and sparse market data, effectively capturing the dynamic evolution of option prices and associated risk profiles. Magneto-transport measurements of Pr$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$ single crystals performed under externally applied pressures up to 73 GPa in diamond anvil cells with either KBr or Nujol oil as pressure media yield signatures of superconductivity with a maximum onset temperature of approximately 31 K. True zero resistance was not observed, consistent with a non-percolating superconducting volume fraction. Magnetization measurements provided corroborating evidence of superconductivity, with a pressure-dependent diamagnetic signal occurring below the onset temperature, and an estimate from the absolute value of the susceptibility suggests a superconducting volume fraction on the order of 10%. We observe sample-to-sample variations in the magnitude and pressure dependence of Tc as well as a dependence on the configuration of electrical contacts on a given sample. Possible causes of this behavior may be significant inhomogeneities in the pressure and/or damage to the samples induced by the pressure media as well as inhomogeneities in the crystals themselves. The results imply that our as-grown Pr$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$ single crystals are not bulk superconductors but that there is a minority structure present within the crystals that is indeed superconducting.

We present the ab initio supported discovery of two new Pu based intermetallic compounds, PuNiSn and PuPtSn. Using density functional theory, the formation energies within the relevant ternary phase diagrams were calculated to predict the stability of both compounds. Simultaneously, Pu-Ni-Sn and Pu-Pt-Sn materials were arc-melted and subsequently characterized with magnetization, specific heat, and resistivity measurements from 2-300 K. Magnetization measurements show that PuNiSn and PuPtSn order antiferromagnetically at TN = 11 K and TN = 15 K, respectively. Specific heat measurements show an enhanced residual electronic specific heat that is indicative of strong electron correlations. Resistivity measurements are indicative of Kondo behavior for PuNiSn while crystal field effects may play a role in the observed temperature dependence for PuPtSn.

Relativistic exact two-component coupled-cluster calculations of molecular sensitivity factors for nuclear Schiff moments (NSMs) are reported. We focus on molecules containing heavy nuclei, especially octupole-deformed nuclei. Analytic relativistic coupled-cluster gradient techniques are used and serve as useful tools for identifying candidate molecules that sensitively probe for physics beyond the Standard Model in the hadronic sector. Notably, these tools enable straightforward ``black-box'' calculations. Two competing chemical mechanisms that contribute to the NSM are analyzed, illuminating the physics of ligand effects on NSM sensitivity factors.

Plutonium's phase diagram is host to complex structures and interactions that make the description of its ground state properties elusive. Using all-electron density functional theory, we study the thermodynamic properties of $\alpha$-Pu. To do this, we build on recent work in the literature by introducing a novel noncollinear magnetic ansatz for $\alpha$-Pu's ground state. The noncollinear ansatz accurately recovers the experimental phonon density of states, heat capacity, and thermal expansion. These new results on $\alpha$-Pu along with recent results on $\delta$-Pu demonstrate the efficacy of noncollinear ansatzes for the description of plutonium.

Anecdotal evidence points to the importance of school principals, but the limited existing research has neither provided consistent results nor indicated any set of essential characteristics of effective principals. This paper exploits extensive student-level panel data across six states to investigate both variations in principal performance and the relationship between effectiveness and key certification factors. While principal effectiveness varies widely across states, there is little indication that regulation of the background and training of principals yields consistently effective performance. Having prior teaching or management experience is not related to our estimates of principal value-added.

Closed-shell atoms and molecules such as Hg or TlF provide some of the best low-energy tests of hadronic $\mathcal{CP}$-violation which is considered to be a necessary ingredient to explain the observed excess of matter over antimatter in our universe. $\mathcal{CP}$-violation is, however, expected to be strongly enhanced in octupole deformed nuclei such as $^{225}$Ra. Recently, closed-shell radium-containing symmetric-top molecular ions were cooled sympathetically in a Coulomb crystal [M. Fan et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 126, 023002 (2021)] and shown to be well-suited for precision spectroscopy in the search for fundamental physics [P. Yu and N. R. Hutzler, Phys. Rev. Lett. 126, 023003 (2021)]. In closed-shell molecules hadronic $\mathcal{CP}$-violation contributes to a net electric dipole moment (EDM) that violates parity and time-reversal symmetry ($\mathcal{P,T}$), which is the target of measurements. To interpret experiments, it is indispensable to know the electronic structure enhancement parameters for the various sources of $\mathcal{P,T}$-violation which contribute to the net $\mathcal{P,T}$-odd EDM. In this paper we employ relativistic Hartree--Fock and density functional theory calculations to determine relevant parameters for interpretation of possible EDM measurements in RaOCH$_3^+$, RaSH$^+$, RaCH$_3^+$, RaCN$^+$, and RaNC$^+$ and perform accurate relativistic coupled cluster calculations of the Schiff moment enhancement in RaSH$^+$ to gauge the quality of the density functional theory approach. Finally, we project to bounds on various fundamental $\mathcal{P,T}$-odd parameters that could be achievable from an experiment with RaOCH$_3^+$ in the near future and asses the complementarity of this experiment to experiments with Hg and TlF., Comment: Updated references, corrected Wm values for RaCH3+, RaCN+ and RaNC+ in Table VII and in the supplement

We report the discovery of a novel form of Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) oxide, which stands as the first example of long-range, coherent polymorphism in this class of inorganic solids. Rather than the well-known, uniform stacking of perovskite blocks ubiquitously found in RP phases, this newly discovered polymorph of the bilayer RP phase $La_{3}Ni_{2}O_{7}$adopts a novel stacking sequence in which single and trilayer blocks of $NiO_{6}$ octahedra alternate in a 1313 sequence. Crystals of this new polymorph are described in space group Cmmm, although we note evidence for a competing Imcm variant. Transport measurements at ambient pressure reveal metallic character with evidence of a charge density wave transition with onset at T = 134 K, which lies intermediate between that of the standard 2222 polymorph of $La_{3}Ni_{2}O_{7}$ (space group Amam) and the trilayer RP phase, $La_{4}Ni_{3}O_{10}$. The discovery of such polymorphism could reverberate to the expansive range of science and applications that rely on RP materials, particularly the recently reported signatures of superconductivity with $T_{c}$ as high as 80 K above 14 GPa in bilayer $La_{3}Ni_{2}O_{7}$., Comment: 37 pages, 10 figures

Volatility smile and skewness are two key properties of option prices that are represented by the implied volatility (IV) surface. However, IV surface calibration through nonlinear interpolation is a complex problem due to several factors, including limited input data, low liquidity, and noise. Additionally, the calibrated surface must obey the fundamental financial principle of the absence of arbitrage, which can be modeled by various differential inequalities over the partial derivatives of the option price with respect to the expiration time and the strike price. To address these challenges, we have introduced a Derivative-Constrained Neural Network (DCNN), which is an enhancement of a multilayer perceptron (MLP) that incorporates derivatives in the objective function. DCNN allows us to generate a smooth surface and incorporate the no-arbitrage condition thanks to the derivative terms in the loss function. In numerical experiments, we train the model using prices generated with the SABR model to produce smile and skewness parameters. We carry out different settings to examine the stability of the calibrated model under different conditions. The results show that DCNNs improve the interpolation of the implied volatility surface with smile and skewness by integrating the computation of the derivatives, which are necessary and sufficient no-arbitrage conditions. The developed algorithm also offers practitioners an effective tool for understanding expected market dynamics and managing risk associated with volatility smile and skewness., Comment: 25 pages, 13 figures

We propose a method to measure time-reversal symmetry violation in molecules that overcomes the standard quantum limit while leveraging decoherence-free subspaces to mitigate sensitivity to classical noise. The protocol does not require an external electric field, and the entangled states have no first-order sensitivity to static electromagnetic fields as they involve superpositions with zero average lab-frame projection of spins and dipoles. This protocol can be applied with trapped neutral or ionic species, and can be implemented using methods which have been demonstrated experimentally., Comment: 7+11 pages, 3+3 figures

We have developed and demonstrated a scheme to achieve rotationally-closed photon cycling in polyatomic molecules with complex hyperfine structure and sensitivity to hadronic symmetry violation, specifically $^{171}$YbOH and $^{173}$YbOH. We calculate rotational branching ratios for spontaneous decay and identify repumping schemes which use electro-optical modulators (EOMs) to address the hyperfine structure. We demonstrate our scheme by cycling photons in a molecular beam and verify that we have achieved rotationally-closed cycling by measuring optical pumping into unaddressed vibrational states. A true understanding of the properties of pnictide superconductors require the development of high-quality materials and performing measurements designed to unravel their intrinsic properties and short-range nematic correlations which are often obscured by extrinsic effects such as poor crystallinity, inhomogeneity, domain formation and twinning. In this paper, we report the systematic growth of high-quality Na-substituted BaFe2As2 single crystals and their characterization using pulsed-magnetic fields x-ray diffraction and x-ray diffuse scattering. Analysis of the properties and compositions of the highest quality crystals show that their actual Na stoichiometry is about 50-60% of the nominal content and that the targeted production of crystals with specific compositions is accessible. We derived a reliable equation to estimate the Na stoichiometry based on the measured superconducting TC of these materials. Attempting to force spin reorientation and induce tetragonality, orthorhombic Ba1-xNaxFe2As2 single crystals subjected to out-of-plane magnetic fields up to 31.4T are found to exhibit strong in-plane magnetic anisotropy demonstrated by the insufficiency of such high fields in manipulating the relative population of their twinned domains or in suppressing the orthorhombic order. Broad x-ray diffuse intensity rods observed at temperatures between 30 K and 300 K uncover short-range structural correlations. Local structure modeling together with 3D-{\Delta}PDF mapping of real-space interatomic vectors show that the diffuse scattering arises from in-plane short-range chemical correlations of the Ba and Na atoms coupled with short-range atomic displacements within the same plane due to an effective size difference between the two atomic species.

Beyond the quantum limit, many-body effects are expected to induce unusual electronic phase transitions. Materials possessing metallic ground states with strong interactions between localized and itinerant electronic states are natural candidates for the realization of such quantum phases. However, the electronic correlations responsible for increasing the likelihood of novel phases simultaneously place the quantum limit beyond the reach of laboratory magnets. Here we propose these difficulties can be surmounted in materials with strong correlations and insulating ground states. Strong correlations in insulators and high magnetic fields conspire to fill Landau levels in the reverse order compared to conventional metals, such that the lowest Landau level is the first observed. Consequently, the quantum limit in strongly correlated insulators is reached in reverse and at fields accessible in laboratories. Quantum oscillations measured at high fields in YbB12 are shown to have features consistent with the reverse quantum limit. These include how quantum oscillations move in lock step with the angular evolution of the insulator-metal transition and the field dependence of the quantum oscillation frequency. We argue that close to the insulator-metal transition, the insulating state should be viewed through the lens of a magnetic field-induced electronic instability affecting the lowest Landau level states in the quantum limit.

Planar tunneling spectroscopy of the Kondo insulator SmB$_6$ suggests that an interaction between the surface Dirac fermions and the bulk spin excitons results in incompletely protected topological surface states. To gain further insight into their true nature, it is necessary to study other topological Kondo insulator candidates. Calculations of electronic energy bands predict that the Kondo insulator YbB$_{12}$ hosts topological surface states protected by crystalline mirror symmetry. In this study, we present tunneling conductance spectra obtained from the (001) surface of YbB$_{12}$ single crystals and discuss them in comparison to SmB$_6$. The linear conductance at low bias provides strong evidence for the existence of surface Dirac fermions. The double-hump structure in the negative bias region is associated with hybridized band edges, in agreement with a calculated band structure. While these similarities with SmB6 are suggestive of the existence of topological surface states in YbB$_{12}$, in agreement with other experiments, some discrepancies are also observed, which we attribute to a difference in their exact nature from those in SmB$_6$., Comment: 25 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Physical Review B

The introduction of neuroendoscopy, microneurosurgery, neuronavigation, and intraoperative imaging for surgical operations has made significant improvements over other traditionally invasive surgical techniques. The integration of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-driven surgical devices with intraoperative imaging and endoscopy can enable further advancements in surgical treatments and outcomes. This work proposes the design and development of an MRI-driven endoscope leveraging the high (3-7 T), external magnetic field of an MR scanner for heat-mitigated steering within the ventricular system of the brain. It also demonstrates the effectiveness of a Lorentz force-based grasper for diseased tissue manipulation and ablation. Feasibility studies show the neuroendoscope can be steered precisely within the lateral ventricle to locate a tumor using both MRI and endoscopic guidance. Results also indicate grasping forces as high as 31 mN are possible and power inputs as low as 0.69 mW can cause cancerous tissue ablation. These findings enable further developments of steerable devices using MR imaging integrated with endoscopic guidance for improved outcomes.

Quantum materials display rich and myriad types of magnetic, electronic, and structural ordering, often with these ordering modes either competing with one another or 'intertwining', that is, reinforcing one another. Low dimensional quantum materials, influenced strongly by competing interactions and/or geometric frustration, are particularly susceptible to such ordering phenomena and thus offer fertile ground for understanding the consequent emergent collective quantum phenomena. Such is the case of the quasi-2D materials R4Ni3O10(R=La, Pr), in which intertwined charge-and spin-density waves (CDW and SDW) on the Ni sublattice have been identified and characterized. Not unexpectedly, these density waves are largely 2D as a result of weak coupling between planes, compounded with magnetic frustration. In the case of R=Pr, however, we show here that exchange coupling between the transition metal and rare earth sublattices upon cooling overcomes both obstacles, leading to a dimensional crossover into a fully 3D ordered and coupled SDW state on both sublattices, as an induced moment on notionally nonmagnetic Pr3+ opens exchange pathways in the third dimension. In the process, the structure of the SDW on the Ni sublattice is irreversibly altered, an effect that survives reheating of the material until the underlying CDW melts. This 'bootstrapping' mechanism linking incommensurate SDWs on the two sublattices illustrates a new member of the multitude of quantum states that low-dimensional magnets can express, driven by coupled orders and modulated by frustrated exchange pathways., Comment: 48 pages including supplementary, 6 figures, 19 supplementary figures

The Scintillating Bubble Chamber (SBC) Collaboration is developing liquid-noble bubble chambers for the quasi-background-free detection of low-mass (GeV-scale) dark matter and coherent scattering of low-energy (MeV-scale) neutrinos (CE$\nu$NS). The first physics-scale demonstrator of this technique, a 10-kg liquid argon bubble chamber dubbed SBC-LAr10, is now being commissioned at Fermilab. This device will calibrate the background discrimination power and sensitivity of superheated argon to nuclear recoils at energies down to 100 eV. A second functionally-identical detector with a focus on radiopure construction is being built for SBC's first dark matter search at SNOLAB. The projected spin-independent sensitivity of this search is approximately $10^{-43}$ cm$^2$ at 1 GeV$/c^2$ dark matter particle mass. The scalability and background discrimination power of the liquid-noble bubble chamber make this technique a compelling candidate for future dark matter searches to the solar neutrino fog at 1 GeV$/c^2$ particle mass (requiring a $\sim$ton-year exposure with non-neutrino backgrounds sub-dominant to the solar CE$\nu$NS signal) and for high-statistics CE$\nu$NS studies at nuclear reactors., Comment: 35 pages, 12 figures, contributed white paper to Snowmass 2021 (final version for Snowmass proceedings)

The anisotropic spin glass transition, in which spin freezing is observed only along the c-axis in pseudobrookite Fe$_2$TiO$_5$, has long been perplexing because the Fe$^{3+}$ moments (d$^5$) are expected to be isotropic. Recently, neutron diffraction demonstrated that surfboard-shaped antiferromagnetic nanoregions coalesce above the glass transition temperature, T$_g$ $\approx$ 55 K, and a model was proposed in which the freezing of the fluctuations of the surfboards' magnetization leads to the anisotropic spin glass state. Given this new model, we have carried out high resolution inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the spin-spin correlations to understand the temperature dependence of the intra-surfboard spin dynamics on neutron (picosecond) time-scales. Here, we report on the temperature-dependence of the spin fluctuations measured from single crystal Fe$_2$TiO$_5$. Strong quasi-elastic magnetic scattering, arising from intra-surfboard correlations, is observed well above T$_g$. The spin fluctuations possess a steep energy-wave vector relation and are indicative of strong exchange interactions, consistent with the large Curie-Weiss temperature. As the temperature approaches T$_g$ from above, a shift in spectral weight from inelastic to elastic scattering is observed. At various temperatures between 4 K and 300 K, a characteristic relaxation rate of the fluctuations is determined. Despite the freezing of the majority of the spin correlations, an inelastic contribution remains even at base temperature, signifying the presence of fluctuating intra-surfboard spin correlations to at least T/T$_g$ $\approx$ 0.1 consistent with a description of Fe$_2$TiO$_5$ as a hybrid between conventional and geometrically frustrated spin glasses., Comment: 6 figures

The unusual anisotropy of the spin glass transition in the pseudobrookite system Fe$_2$TiO$_5$ has been interpreted as arising from an induced, van der Waals-like, interaction among magnetic clusters. Here we present susceptibility ($\chi$) and specific heat data (C) for Fe2TiO5 diluted with non-magnetic Ga, (Fe$_{1-p}$Ga$_p$)$_2$TiO$_5$, for disorder parameter p = 0, 0.11, and 0.42, and elastic neutron scattering data for p = 0.20. A uniform suppression of T{_g} is observed upon increasing p, along with a value of $\chi (T_g)$ that increases as T$_g$ decreases, i.e. $d\chi(T_g)/dT_g< 0$. We also observe C(T) $\propto$ T$^2$ in the low temperature limit. The observed behavior places (Fe$_{1-p}$Ga$_p$)$_2$TiO$_5$ in the category of a strongly geometrically frustrated spin glass., Comment: 4 figures

Optical control of polyatomic molecules promises new opportunities in precision metrology, fundamental chemistry, quantum information, and many-body science. Contemporary experimental and theoretical efforts have mostly focused on cycling photons via excitation of a single electron localized to an alkaline earth (group 2)-like metal center. In this manuscript, we consider pathways towards optical cycling in polyatomic molecules with multi-electron degrees of freedom, which arise from two or more cycling electrons localized to $p$-block post-transition metal and metalloid (group 13, 14, and 15) centers. We characterize the electronic structure and rovibrational branching of several prototypical candidates using ab initio quantum chemical methods. Despite increased internal complexity and challenging design parameters, we find several molecules possessing quasi-closed photon cycling schemes with highly diagonal, visible and near-infrared transitions. Furthermore, we identify new heuristics for engineering optically controllable and laser-coolable polyatomic molecules with multi-electron cycling centers. Our results help elucidate the interplay between hybridization, repulsion, and ionicity in optically active species and provide a first step towards using polyatomic molecules with complex electronic structure as a resource for quantum science and measurement., Comment: 29 pages, 11 figures, 5 tables, and 6 supplemental data tables

Self-Supervised learning (SSL) has become the new state-of-art in several domain classification and segmentation tasks. Of these, one popular category in SSL is distillation networks such as BYOL. This work proposes RSDnet, which applies the distillation network (BYOL) in the remote sensing (RS) domain where data is non-trivially different from natural RGB images. Since Multi-spectral (MS) and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensors provide varied spectral and spatial resolution information, we utilised them as an implicit augmentation to learn invariant feature embeddings. In order to learn RS based invariant features with SSL, we trained RSDnet in two ways, i.e., single channel feature learning and three channel feature learning. This work explores the usefulness of single channel feature learning from random MS and SAR bands compared to the common notion of using three or more bands. In our linear evaluation, these single channel features reached a 0.92 F1 score on the EuroSAT classification task and 59.6 mIoU on the DFC segmentation task for certain single bands. We also compared our results with ImageNet weights and showed that the RS based SSL model outperforms the supervised ImageNet based model. We further explored the usefulness of multi-modal data compared to single modality data, and it is shown that utilising MS and SAR data learn better invariant representations than utilising only MS data., Comment: Manuscript Accepted at IEEE JSTAR

Understanding the physics of phase transitions in two-dimensional (2D) systems underpins the research in diverse fields including statistical mechanics, quantum systems, nanomagnetism, and soft condensed matter. However, many fundamental aspects of 2D phase transitions are still not well understood, including the effects of interparticle potential, polydispersity, and particle shape. Magnetic skyrmions, which are non-trivial chiral spin structures, can be considered as quasi-particles that form two-dimensional lattices. Here we show, by real-space imaging using in situ cryo-Lorentz transmission electron microscopy coupled with machine learning, the ordering behavior of N\'eel skyrmion lattices in van der Waals Fe3GeTe2. We demonstrate a distinct change in the skyrmion size distribution during field-cooling, which leads to a loss of lattice order and an evolution of the skyrmion liquid phase. Remarkably, the lattice order is restored during field heating and demonstrates a thermal hysteresis. Our quantitative analysis explains this behavior based on the energy landscape of skyrmions and demonstrates the potential to control the lattice order in 2D phase transitions.

Low-valent nickelates R$_{n+1}$Ni$_n$O$_{2n+2}$ (R = rare earth) containing Ni$^{1+}$ (d$^{9}$) with a quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) square planar coordination geometry possess structural and electronic properties that are similar to those of high-Tc cuprates, including superconductivity itself in the doped infinite layer ($n = \infty$) RNiO$_2$ system. Within this R$_{n+1}$Ni$_n$O$_{2n+2}$ nickelate family, the crystallographic isomorphs Pr$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$ and La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$ exhibit singularly different ground states: Pr$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$ is metallic and La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$ is a charge- and spin-stripe ordered insulator. To explore and understand the ground state evolution from metallic Pr$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$ to stripe-ordered La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$ in the R$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$ family, we have grown a series of isovalent-substituted single crystals (Pr$_{1-x}$La$_x$)$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$. Combining thermodynamic, transport, magnetic, and synchrotron X-ray single crystal diffraction measurements, we reveal a transition between metallic and stripe-insulator phase regions, with a putative quantum phase transition at x = 0.4. We propose two possible models for (Pr$_{1-x}$La$_x$)$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$: an electronically inhomogeneous system that could serve as a candidate for exploring quantum Griffiths phase physics and a homogeneous system with a putative quantum critical point at the phase boundary.

The National Math + Science Initiative (NMSI) is a nonprofit organization committed to improving educational outcomes that traces its roots back to the early 1990s. NMSI's College Readiness Program (CRP) is a long-standing program with the goal of promoting STEM education in high schools to improve students' preparation for college. The three-year program provides teacher, student, and school supports to promote high school students' success in English, mathematics, and science Advanced Placement (AP) courses, with a focus on students who are traditionally underrepresented in the targeted AP courses. Through a scale-up grant awarded to NMSI by the Investing in Innovation (i3) program, the CRP was implemented in 27 schools in the 2016-2017 school year (Treatment Schools) and in 21 schools in the 2017-2018 school year (Delayed Treatment Schools), collectively identified as Program Schools. CRESST conducted an independent evaluation of the impact of the CRP on students' AP outcomes using a randomized cluster trial with 48 CRP schools and 48 Comparison Schools in 10 states. The evaluation of the CRP consisted of three parts: (1) measuring the program's impact on selected student AP exam outcomes; (2) determining the impact of the program on school perspectives and culture; and (3) assessing of the fidelity of implementation of the CRP at the school level. AP exam data from 48 Treatment Schools, with a total of 8,778 exams in 2018 and 9,378 in 2019, and 48 matched control schools, with 7,505 exams in 2018 and 2019 in Year 3, were analyzed for this study. Program impact was evaluated using a 2-level hierarchical generalized linear model (HGLM) with students nested within schools. The analyses revealed that in 2018 the probability of a student taking an AP exam in the Program Schools was, on average, 7% higher than the paired Comparison Schools, and the difference was statistically significant. And in 2019 the effect was even greater with the probability of taking an AP exam being significantly higher in Program Schools (18%) than in Comparison Schools (3%). When looking at the probability of an exam yielding a qualifying score, in 2018, the HGLM analyses found no significant difference between the two groups. In 2019, however, exams taken at the Program Schools had a significantly higher overall probability (2%) of receiving a qualifying score than the Comparison Schools (0%). These analyses compared results to the total school population. In the next analyses, we looked only at those students who took AP exams. In 2018, overall, the fitted probability of achieving a qualifying score among the exams taken was 8% in the Program Schools, compared to 22% in the Comparison Schools. In 2019, however, the difference between the Program Schools (7%) and the Comparison Schools (9%) was not statistically significant. Fidelity of implementation was evaluated using a fidelity matrix approach (required as part of the evaluation of the i3 program), which showed that not all elements of the program were implemented with high fidelity. In 2018, results indicated that 43 out of 48 schools (90%) achieved 80% or better implementation fidelity, for an average fidelity score of 89%. Four schools achieved a perfect 100% fidelity score. In 2019, 88% of schools achieved 80% or better implementation fidelity. Ten schools achieved a perfect 100% fidelity score. In 2018 in more than 75% of schools, not all teachers fulfilled their requirements for attending the required teacher training sessions, and so this component was not implemented with fidelity. In 2019, this picture improved a little with 15 schools (31%) meeting the 80% threshold. Teacher stipends, administrator bonuses, and student qualifying score awards were paid as expected. Teacher survey data indicated that teachers found the training and professional development activities provided by the CRP to be the most beneficial program supports. Mentoring was chosen, across all years, as the least effective program component. When prompted for the second most effective CRP component, the same number of teachers selected the funding of classroom and lab supplies as did teacher training. Dark matter searches using dual-phase xenon time-projection chambers (LXe-TPCs) rely on their ability to reject background electron recoils (ERs) while searching for signal-like nuclear recoils (NRs). ER response is typically calibrated using $\beta$-decay sources, such as tritium, but these calibrations do not characterize events accompanied by an atomic vacancy, as in solar neutrino scatters off inner shell electrons. Such events lead to emission of X-rays and Auger electrons, resulting in higher electron-ion recombination and thus a more NR-like response than inferred from $\beta$-decay calibration. We present a cross-calibration of tritium $\beta$-decays and $^{127}$Xe electron-capture decays (which produce inner-shell vacancies) in a small-scale LXe-TPC and give the most precise measurements to date of light and charge yields for the $^{127}$Xe L-shell electron-capture in liquid xenon. We observe a 6.9$\sigma$ (9.2$\sigma$) discrepancy in the L-shell capture response relative to tritium $\beta$-decays, measured at a drift field of 363 $\pm$ 14 V/cm (258 $\pm$ 13 V/cm), when compared to simulations tuned to reproduce the correct $\beta$-decay response. In dark matter searches, use of a background model that neglects this effect leads to overcoverage (higher limits) for background-only multi-kiloton-year exposures, but at a level much less than the 1-$\sigma$ experiment-to-experiment variation of the 90\% C.L. upper limit on the interaction rate of a 50 GeV/$c^2$ dark matter particle., Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures

The perovskite SrVO$_3$ is of interest for a variety of applications due to its simple metallic character and stability in reducing environments. Here we report the preparation of single-crystal SrVO$_3$ using the laser floating zone technique. Laue diffraction implies single domains ca. 30 mm in length. The stoichiometry of optimized crystals was found to be Sr$_{0.985}$VO$_{2.91}$ using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry and neutron powder diffraction analysis, with compositions adjustable depending on the crystal pulling rate. Heat capacity measurements from 2 to 300 K show variations with composition, attributable to a combination of impurity scattering and changes in phonon dynamics.Our results demonstrate the utility of the laser floating zone technique in preparing a range of materials, and our advances with SrVO$_3$ may help lead to applications including catalysis, transparent conducting oxides, thermionic emitters, and other electronic devices., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

The search for new elementary particles is one of the most basic pursuits in physics, spanning from subatomic physics to quantum materials. Magnons are the ubiquitous elementary quasiparticle to describe the excitations of fully-ordered magnetic systems. But other possibilities exist, including fractional and multipolar excitations. Here, we demonstrate that strong quantum interactions exist between three flavors of elementary quasiparticles in the uniaxial spin-one magnet FeI2. Using neutron scattering in an applied magnetic field, we observe spontaneous decay between conventional and heavy magnons and the recombination of these quasiparticles into a super-heavy bound-state. Akin to other contemporary problems in quantum materials, the microscopic origin for new physics in FeI2 is the quasi-flat nature of excitation bands and the presence of Kitaev anisotropic magnetic exchange interactions., Comment: 31 pages, 3 main figures

A novel explainable AI method called CLEAR Image is introduced in this paper. CLEAR Image is based on the view that a satisfactory explanation should be contrastive, counterfactual and measurable. CLEAR Image explains an image's classification probability by contrasting the image with a corresponding image generated automatically via adversarial learning. This enables both salient segmentation and perturbations that faithfully determine each segment's importance. CLEAR Image was successfully applied to a medical imaging case study where it outperformed methods such as Grad-CAM and LIME by an average of 27% using a novel pointing game metric. CLEAR Image excels in identifying cases of "causal overdetermination" where there are multiple patches in an image, any one of which is sufficient by itself to cause the classification probability to be close to one.

We present new numerical schemes for pricing perpetual Bermudan and American options as well as $\alpha$-quantile options. This includes a new direct calculation of the optimal exercise barrier for early-exercise options. Our approach is based on the Spitzer identities for general L\'evy processes and on the Wiener-Hopf method. Our direct calculation of the price of $\alpha$-quantile options combines for the first time the Dassios-Port-Wendel identity and the Spitzer identities for the extrema of processes. We present numerical methods based on the fast Fourier transform (FFT) to solve convolution integral equations on a semi-infinite interval (Wiener-Hopf equation) or on a finite interval (Fredholm equation). We extend and improve a FFT-based method for the Wiener-Hopf equation due to Henery, expressing it in terms of the Hilbert transform, and computing the latter in a more sophisticated way with sinc functions. We then generalise our method to the Fredholm equation reformulating it as two coupled Wiener-Hopf equations and solving them iteratively. Doped perovskite cobaltites (e.g., La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$CoO$_3$) have been extensively studied for their spin-state physics, electronic inhomogeneity, and insulator-metal transitions. Ferromagnetically-interacting spin-state polarons emerge at low $x$ in the phase diagram of these compounds, eventually yielding long-range ferromagnetism. The onset of long-range ferromagnetism ($x \approx 0.18$) is substantially delayed relative to polaron percolation ($x \approx 0.05$), however, generating a troubling inconsistency. Here, Monte-Carlo simulations of a disordered classical spin model are used to establish that previously ignored magnetic frustration is responsible for this effect, enabling faithful reproduction of the magnetic phase diagram., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures; includes Supplemental Material (4 pages, 2 figures)

The true topological nature of the Kondo insulator SmB$_6$ remains to be unveiled. Our previous tunneling study not only found evidence for the existence of surface Dirac fermions, but it also uncovered that they inherently interact with the spin excitons, collective excitations in the bulk. We have extended such a spectroscopic investigation into crystals containing a Sm deficiency. The bulk hybridization gap is found to be insensitive to the deficiency up to 1% studied here, but the surface states in Sm-deficient crystals exhibit quite different temperature evolutions from those in stoichiometric ones. We attribute this to the topological surface states remaining incoherent down to the lowest measurement temperature due to their continued interaction with the spin excitons that remain uncondensed. This result shows that the detailed topological nature of SmB$_6$ could vary drastically in the presence of disorder in the lattice. This sensitiveness to disorder is seemingly contradictory to the celebrated topological protection, but it can be understood as being due to the intimate interplay between strong correlations and topological effects., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures

We analyze equilibrium behavior and optimal policy within a Susceptible-Infected-Recovered epidemic model augmented with potentially undiagnosed agents who infer their health status and a social planner with imperfect enforcement of social distancing. We define and prove the existence of a perfect Bayesian Markov competitive equilibrium and contrast it with the efficient allocation subject to the same informational constraints. We identify two externalities, static (individual actions affect current risk of infection) and dynamic (individual actions affect future disease prevalence), and study how they are affected by limitations on testing and enforcement. We prove that a planner with imperfect enforcement will always wish to curtail activity, but that its incentives to do so vanish as testing becomes perfect. When a vaccine arrives far into the future, the planner with perfect enforcement may encourage activity before herd immunity. We find that lockdown policies have modest welfare gains, whereas quarantine policies are effective even with imperfect testing.

Chemical bonding in 2D layered materials and van der Waals solids is central to understanding and harnessing their unique electronic, magnetic, optical, thermal and superconducting properties. Here we report the discovery of spontaneous, bidirectional, bilayer twisting (twist angle ~ 4.5{\deg}) in the metallic kagom\'e MgCo6Ge6 at T = 100(2) K via X-ray diffraction measure-ments, enabled by the preparation of single crystals by the Laser Bridgman method. Despite the appearance of static twisting on cooling from T ~ 300 K to 100 K, no evidence for a phase transition was found in physical properties measurements. Combined with the presence of an Einstein phonon mode contribution in the specific heat, this implies that the twisting exists at all temperatures but is thermally fluctuating at room temperature. Crystal Orbital Hamilton Population analysis demonstrates that the cooperative twisting between layers stabilizes the Co-kagom\'e network when coupled to strongly bonded and rigid (Ge2) dimers that connect adjacent layers. Further modelling of the displacive disorder in the crystal structure shows the presence of second, Mg-deficient, stacking sequence. This alternative stacking sequence also exhibits inter-layer twisting, but with a different pattern, consistent with the change in electron count due to removal of Mg. Magnetization, resistivity, and low-temperature specific heat measurements are all consistent with a Pauli paramagnetic, strongly correlated metal. Our results provide crucial insight into how chemical concepts lead to interesting electronic structures and behaviors in layered materials.

Single crystals of PrNiO3 were grown under an oxygen pressure of 295 bar using a unique high-pressure optical-image floating zone furnace. The crystals, with volume in excess of 1 mm3, were characterized structurally using single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction. Resistivity, specific heat, and magnetic susceptibility were measured, all of which evidenced an abrupt, first order metal-insulator transition (MIT) at ~130 K, in agreement with previous literature reports on polycrystalline specimens. Temperature-dependent single crystal diffraction was performed to investigate changes through the MIT. Spin-waves e.g. magnons are the conventional elementary excitations of ordered magnets. However, other possibilities exist. For instance, magnon bound-states can arise due to attractive magnon-magnon interactions and drastically impact the static and dynamic properties of materials. Here, we demonstrate a zoo of distinct multi-magnon quasiparticles in the frustrated spin-1 triangular antiferromagnet FeI$_2$ using time-domain terahertz spectroscopy. The energy-magnetic field excitation spectrum contains signatures of one-, two-, four- and six-magnon bound-states, which we analyze using an exact diagonalization approach for a dilute gas of interacting magnons. The two-magnon single-ion bound states occur due to strong anisotropy and the preponderance of even higher order excitations arises from the tendency of the single-ion bound states to themselves form bound states due to their very flat dispersion. This menagerie of tunable interacting quasiparticles provides a unique platform in a condensed matter setting that is reminiscent of the few-body quantum phenomena central to cold-atom, nuclear, and particle physics experiments.

Time reversal symmetry breaking Weyl semimetals are unique among Weyl materials in allowing the minimal number of Weyl points thus offering the clearest signatures of the associated physics. Here we present neutron diffraction, density functional theory and transport measurement results which indicate that EuCd$_2$As$_2$ , under ambient field, strain and pressure, is such a material with a single pair of Weyl points. Our work reveals a magnetic structure (magnetic space group $C2'/m'$) with Eu moments pointing along the [210] direction in-plane and canted $\sim$ 30$^{\circ}$ out-of-plane. Density functional theory calculations using this structure show that the observed canting drastically alters the relevant electronic bands, relative to the in-plane order, leading to a single set of well defined Weyl points. Furthermore, we find the canting angle can tune the distance of the Weyl points above the Fermi level, with the smallest distance at low canting angles. Finally, transport measurements of the anomalous Hall Effect and longitudinal magnetoresistance exhibit properties indicative of a chiral anomaly, thus supporting the neutron scattering and DFT results suggesting EuCd$_2$As$_2$ is close to the ideal situation of the Weyl "Hydrogen atom"., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

Magnetic topological semimetals have attracted intense attention recently since these materials carry a great promise for potential applications in novel spintronic devices. Here, we report an intimate interplay between lattice, Eu magnetic order and topological semimetallic behavior in Eu$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnSb$_{2}$ driven by nonmagnetic Sr doping on magnetic Eu site. Different types of Eu spin reorientations are controllable by the Sr concentration, temperature or magnetic field, and coupled to the quantum transport properties of Dirac fermions generated by the 2D Sb layers. Our study opens a new pathway to achieving exotic magnetic order and topological semimetallic state via controlling spin reorientation. The effective strategy of substituting rare-earth site by nonmagnetic element demonstrated here may be applicable to the AMnCh$_{2}$ (A=rare-earth elements; Ch=Bi/Sb) family and a wide variation of other layered compounds involving spatially separated rare-earth and transition metal layers., Comment: 25 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables, plus supplementary materials

In this paper we prove two results which further classify smoothness properties of Hilbert schemes of points. This is done by counting classes of arrows on Young diagrams corresponding to monomial ideals, building on the approach taken by Jan Cheah to show smoothness in the 2 dimensional case. We prove sufficient conditions for points to be smooth on Hilbert schemes of points in 3 dimensions and on nested schemes in 2 dimensions in terms of the geometry of the Young diagram. In particular, we proved that when the region between the two diagrams at a point of the nested scheme is rectangular, the corresponding point is smooth. We also proved that if the three dimensional Young diagram at a point can be oriented such that its horizontal layers are rectangular, then the point is smooth., Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures

An investigation of the structural, magnetic, thermodynamic, and charge transport properties of non-centrosymmetric hexagonal ScFeGe reveals it to be an anisotropic metal with a transition to a weak itinerant incommensurate helimagnetic state below $T_N = 36$ K. Neutron diffraction measurements discovered a temperature and field independent helical wavevector \textbf{\textit{k}} = (0 0 0.193) with magnetic moments of 0.53 $\mu_{B}$ per formula unit confined to the {\it ab}-plane. Density functional theory calculations are consistent with these measurements and find several bands that cross the Fermi level along the {\it c}-axis with a nearly degenerate set of flat bands just above the Fermi energy. The anisotropy found in the electrical transport is reflected in the calculated Fermi surface, which consists of several warped flat sheets along the $c$-axis with two regions of significant nesting, one of which has a wavevector that closely matches that found in the neutron diffraction. The electronic structure calculations, along with a strong anomaly in the {\it c}-axis conductivity at $T_N$, signal a Fermi surface driven magnetic transition, similar to that found in spin density wave materials. Magnetic fields applied in the {\it ab}-plane result in a metamagnetic transition with a threshold field of $\approx$ 6.7 T along with a sharp, strongly temperature dependent, discontinuity and a change in sign of the magnetoresistance for in-plane currents. Thus, ScFeGe is an ideal system to investigate the effect of in-plane magnetic fields on an easy-plane magnetic system, where the relative strength of the magnetic interactions and anisotropies determine the topology and magnetic structure., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures

Precision measurements of Schiff moments in heavy, deformed nuclei are sensitive probes of beyond Standard Model $T,P$-violation in the hadronic sector. While the most sensitive limits on Schiff moments to date are set with diamagnetic atoms, polar polyatomic molecules can offer higher sensitivities with unique experimental advantages. In particular, symmetric top molecular ions possess $K$-doublets of opposite parity with especially small splittings, leading to full polarization at low fields, internal co-magnetometer states useful for rejection of systematic effects, and the ability to perform sensitive searches for $T,P$-violation using a small number of trapped ions containing heavy exotic nuclei. We consider the symmetric top cation $^{225}$RaOCH$_3^+$ as a prototypical and candidate platform for performing sensitive nuclear Schiff measurements and characterize in detail its internal structure using relativistic ab initio methods. The combination of enhancements from a deformed nucleus, large polarizability, and unique molecular structure make this molecule a promising platform to search for fundamental symmetry violation even with a single trapped ion.

The information content of crystalline materials becomes astronomical when collective electronic behavior and their fluctuations are taken into account. In the past decade, improvements in source brightness and detector technology at modern x-ray facilities have allowed a dramatically increased fraction of this information to be captured. Now, the primary challenge is to understand and discover scientific principles from big data sets when a comprehensive analysis is beyond human reach. We report the development of a novel unsupervised machine learning approach, XRD Temperature Clustering (X-TEC), that can automatically extract charge density wave (CDW) order parameters and detect intra-unit cell (IUC) ordering and its fluctuations from a series of high-volume X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements taken at multiple temperatures. We apply X-TEC to XRD data on a quasi-skutterudite family of materials, (Ca$_x$Sr$_{1-x}$)$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$, where a quantum critical point arising from charge order is observed as a function of Ca concentration. We further apply X-TEC to XRD data on the pyrochlore metal, Cd$_2$Re$_2$O$_7$, to investigate its two much debated structural phase transitions and uncover the Goldstone mode accompanying them. We demonstrate how unprecedented atomic scale knowledge can be gained when human researchers connect the X-TEC results to physical principles. Specifically, we extract from the X-TEC-revealed selection rule that the Cd and Re displacements are approximately equal in amplitude, but out of phase. This discovery reveals a previously unknown involvement of $5d^2$ Re, supporting the idea of an electronic origin to the structural order. Our approach can radically transform XRD experiments by allowing in-operando data analysis and enabling researchers to refine experiments by discovering interesting regions of phase space on-the-fly.

The recent reports of superconductivity in Nd1-xSrxNiO2/SrTiO3 heterostructures have reinvigorated interest in potential superconductivity of low-valence nickelates. Synthesis of Ni1+-containing compounds is notoriously difficult. In the current work, a combined sol-gel combustion and high-pressure annealing technique was employed to prepare polycrystalline perovskite Nd1-xSrxNiO3 (x = 0, 0.1 and 0.2). Metal nitrates and metal acetates were used as starting materials, and the latter were found to be superior to the former in terms of safety and reactivity. The Nd1-xSrxNiO3 compounds were subsequently reduced to Nd1 xSrxNiO2 using calcium hydride in a sealed, evacuated quartz tube. To understand the synthesis pathway, the evolution from NdNiO3 to NdNiO2 was monitored using in-situ synchrotron X ray diffraction during the reduction process. Electrical transport properties were consistent with an insulator-metal transition occurring between x = 0 and 0.1 for Nd1-xSrxNiO3. Superconductivity was not observed in our bulk samples of Nd1-xSrxNiO2. Neutron diffraction experiments at 3 K and 300 K were performed on Nd0.9Sr0.1NiO2, in which no magnetic Bragg reflections were observed, and the results of structural Rietveld refinement are provided., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

Nickelates are a rich class of materials, ranging from insulating magnets to superconductors. But for stoichiometric materials, insulating behavior is the norm, as for most late transition metal oxides. Notable exceptions are the 3D perovskite LaNiO$_3$, an unconventional paramagnetic metal, and the layered Ruddlesden-Popper phases R$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$, (R=La, Pr, Nd). The latter are particularly intriguing because they exhibit an unusual metal-to-metal transition. Here, we demonstrate that this transition results from an incommensurate density wave with both charge and magnetic character that lies intermediate in behavior between the metallic density wave seen in chromium metal and the insulating stripes typically found in layered nickelates. As such, R$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$, which appears to be the first known example of an itinerant spin density wave in a 3d transition metal oxide, represents an important bridge between the paramagnetism of 3D metallic LaNiO$_3$ at higher nickel valence and the polaronic behavior of quasi-2D R$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_4$ at lower nickel valence.

In this note, we discuss the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak from the perspective of the market-structure. We observe that the US market-structure has dramatically changed during the past four weeks and that the level of change has followed the number of infected cases reported in the USA. Presently, market-structure resembles most closely the structure during the middle of the 2008 crisis but there are signs that it may be starting to evolve into a new structure altogether.
