Search

Isotropic diffuse gamma-ray flux in the PeV energy band is an important tool for multimessenger tests of models of the origin of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos and for new-physics searches. So far, this flux has not yet been observed. Carpet-2 is an air-shower experiment capable of detecting astrophysical gamma rays with energies above 0.1 PeV. Here we report the upper limits on the isotropic gamma-ray flux from Carpet-2 data obtained in 1999-2011 and 2018-2022. Galactic sites of acceleration of cosmic rays to energies of order 10^15 eV and higher, dubbed PeVatrons, reveal themselves by recently discovered gamma radiation of energies above 100 TeV. However, joint gamma-ray and neutrino production, which marks unambiguously cosmic-ray interactions with ambient matter and radiation, was not observed until now. In November 2020, the IceCube neutrino observatory reported an ~150 TeV neutrino event from the direction of one of the most promising Galactic PeVatrons, the Cygnus Cocoon. Here we report on the observation of a 3.1-sigma (post trial) excess of atmospheric air showers from the same direction, observed by the Carpet-2 experiment and consistent with a few-months flare in photons above 300 TeV, in temporal coincidence with the neutrino event. The fluence of the gamma-ray flare is of the same order as that expected from the neutrino observation, assuming the standard mechanism of neutrino production. We report on the search of astrophysical gamma rays with energies in the 100 TeV to several PeV range arriving in directional and temporal coincidence with public alerts from HAWC (TeV gamma rays) and IceCube (neutrinos above ~100 TeV). The observations have been performed with the Carpet-2 air-shower detector at the Baksan Neutrino Observatory, working in the "photon-friendly" mode since 2018. Photon candidate showers are selected by their low muon content. No significant excess of the photon candidates have been observed, and upper limits on gamma-ray fluences associated with the alerts are obtained. For events with good viewing conditions, the Carpet-2 effective area for photons is of the order of the IceCube effective area for neutrinos of the same energy, so the constraints start to probe the production of neutrinos in fast flares of Galactic sources., Comment: 4 pages paper + 5 pages Supplemental Material. We present the earliest astronomical observation of a high energy neutrino error box in which its variability was discovered after high-energy neutrinos detection. The one robotic telescope of the MASTER global international network (Lipunov et al. 2010) automatically imaged the error box of the very high-energy neutrino event IceCube-170922A. Observations were carried out in minute after the IceCube-170922A neutrino event was detected by the IceCube observatory at the South Pole. MASTER found the blazar TXS 0506+056 to be in the off-state after one minute and then switched to the on-state no later than two hours after the event. The effect is observed at a 50-sigma significance level. Primordial black holes (PBHs) are black holes which may form in the early Universe through the gravitational collapse of primordial cosmological density fluctuations. Due to Hawking radiation these PBHs are supposed to evaporate by emitting particles. Recent developments in the experimental searching for evaporating PBHs in the local Universe are reviewed. The multimessenger techniques of searching for signals from evaporating PBHs are discussed.

The detectors based on the liquid scintillator (LS) monitored by an array of photo-multiplier tubes (PMT) are often used in low energy experiments such as neutrino oscillation studies and search for dark matter. Detectors of this kind operate in an energy range spanning from hundreds of keV to a few GeV providing a few percent resolution at energies above 1 MeV and allowing to observe fine spectral features. This article gives a brief overview of relevant physical processes and introduces a new universal simulation tool LSMC (Liquid Scintillator Monte Carlo) for simulation of LS-based detectors equipped with PMT arrays. This tool is based on the Geant4 framework and provides supplementing functionality for ease of configuration and comprehensive output. The usage of LSMC is illustrated by modeling and optimization of a compact detector prototype currently being built at Baksan Neutrino Observatory.

Carpet is an air-shower array at Baksan, Russia, equipped with a large-area muon detector, which makes it possible to separate primary photons from hadrons. Using data of the Baksan Underground Scintillation Telescope (BUST) we have made a search for muon neutrinos and antineutrinos with energies above 1 GeV coinciding with the gravitational wave event GW170817 that was recorded on August 17, 2017 by the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo observatories. This is a first detection of the new type of events occurring as a result of a merger of two neutron stars in a binary system. A short gamma-ray burst GRB170817A accompanying this event is an evidence of particle acceleration in the source whose precise position was determined by detection of the subsequent optical signal. No neutrino signals were found with the BUST in the interval $\pm 500$ s around the moment of the gravitational wave event GW170817, as well as during the next 14 days. The upper limits on integral fluxes of muon neutrino and antineutrino from the source are derived., Comment: Submitted to JETP Letters

The experiment on recording neutrino bursts operates since the mid-1980. As the target, we use two parts of the facility with the total mass of 240 tons. The current status of the experiment and some results related to the investigation of background events and the stability of facility operation are presented. Over the period of June 30, 1980 to December 31, 2018, the actual observational time is 33.02 years. No candidate for the stellar core collapse has been detected during the observation period. An upper bound of the mean frequency of core collapse supernovae in our Galaxy is 0.070 year$^{-1}$ (90\% CL)., Comment: Submitted to Astropart.Phys

Carpet-2 is an air-shower array at Baksan Valley, Russia, equipped with a large-area (175 m^2) muon detector, which makes it possible to separate primary photons from hadrons. Early results of the search for E_\gamma>1 PeV cosmic photons from point sources with the data of Carpet-2, an air-shower array equipped with a 175 m^2 muon detector, are presented. They include 95% CL upper limits on PeV photon fluxes from stacked directions of high-energy IceCube neutrino events and from four predefined sources, Crab, Cyg X-3, Mrk 421 and Mrk 501. An insignificant excess of events from Mrk 421 will be further monitored. The matrices formed of silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) are very promising photosensors for the scintillation detectors. The use of SiPM matrices with appropriate optical collector gives, in principle, a possibility to do a snapshot of glowing track of charged particle traversing a scintillator. The prototype of such scintillation detector is under development now in INR RAS. The present-day status of the problem of searching for primary cosmic gamma rays at energies above 100 TeV is discussed, as well as a proposal for a new experiment in this field. It is shown that an increase of the area of the muon detector of the Carpet-2 air shower array up to 410 square meters, to be realized in 2016, will make this array quite competitive with past and existing experiments, especially at modest energies. Some preliminary results of measurements made with smaller area of the muon detector are presented together with estimates of expected results to be obtained with the coming large-area muon detector., Comment: 7 pages. Observing a high-statistics neutrino signal from the supernova explosions in the Galaxy is a major goal of low-energy neutrino astronomy. The prospects for detecting all flavors of neutrinos and antineutrinos from the core-collapse supernova (ccSN) in operating and forthcoming large liquid scintillation detectors (LLSD) are widely discussed now. One of proposed LLSD is Baksan Large Volume Scintillation Detector (BLVSD). This detector will be installed at the Baksan Neutrino Observatory (BNO) of the Institute for Nuclear Research, Russian Academy of Sciences, at a depth of 4800 m.w.e. According to the Baksan underground scintillation telescope data the barometric coefficients for six intervals of zenith angles of particle registration were obtained for ten years (2003-2012). The obtained barometric coefficients exceed an order of magnitude the theoretical values. Nevertheless, these results are in good agreement with the data obtained for the barometric effect of high-energy muons in a number papers of other authors. And there is a noticeable increase of the absolute values of the measured barometric coefficients with increase of the threshold energy of muons., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, 5 tables

The multichannel data acquisition system is intended to be used in the EMMA experiment studying cosmic rays. The array will be in the Pihasalmi mine (central Finland) at a depth of about 85 m. The scintillator counters (SC-1) of the array are cast plastic scintillators with a wavelength of each SC-1 detector is 12.2{\times}12.2{\times}3.0 cm^3. 16 SC-1 detectors are placed in the metal case of 50.0{\times}50.0{\times}13.0 cm^3 dimension. Each case, called SC-16 detector, contains electronics of preliminary processing of signals and operating mode stabilization. The whole of the array will contain 96 detectors SC-16. It will make 1536 channels placed in three planes (48+24+24 detectors). The array will allow us to measure the time of flight of particles between SC-16 detectors and the coordinates of SC-1 fired detectors. The main goal of the Andyrchy-BUST experiment is to study the primary cosmic rays spectrum and composition around the knee. The experimental data on the knee, as observed in the electromagnetic and high energy muon components, are presented. The electromagnetic component in our experiment is measured using the "Andyrchy" EAS array. High energy muon component (with 230 GeV threshold energy of muons) is measured using the Baksan Underground Scintillation Telescope (BUST). Differential and integral energy spectra of cosmic ray muons in the energy range from several TeV to ~ 1 PeV obtained by means of the analysis of multiple interactions of muons (pair meter technique) in the Baksan underground scintillation telescope (BUST) are presented. Experimental data of arrays "Andyrchy" and "Carpet-2" of Baksan Neutrino Observatory (Institute for Nuclear Research), obtained in the regime of a detection of the single cosmic-ray component, are used for a search of the bursts of cosmic gamma rays from evaporating primordial black holes. Different theoretical models of the evaporation process are used for the analysis. Distributions of the counting rate fluctuations on both arrays agree with the expectations from the cosmic ray background. The new constraints on the concentration of evaporating primordial black holes in the local region of Galaxy are obtained. The technical procedure of a search of bursts of very high energy gamma rays from evaporation of primordial black holes on air-shower array "Andyrchy" of Baksan Neutrino Observatory of Institute for Nuclear Research is described. The theoretical model used in the present work assumes that the chromosphere around the evaporating black hole does not form. For minimization of the cosmic ray background the method of multidimensional analysis of modelled as well as experimentally detected events is applied. The new upper limit on the concentration of evaporating primordial black holes in the local region of Galaxy is obtained. The lateral distribution function of high energy muons in EAS around the knee ($5.9\le \lg N_e \le 7.1$) has been measured for near vertical showers ($\theta \le 20^{\circ}$, effective muon threshold energy is 230 GeV). The measurements have been performed at the Baksan Underground Scintillation Telescope (BUST). The electromagnetic component is measured by the "Andyrchy" EAS array, located above the BUST. The knee in EAS size spectrum is found to be at $\lg N_e \approx 6.3$. The experimental results are compared with Monte Carlo simulations., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures. The results of a development of a scintillator counter with wavelength shifting (WLS) fibre and a multi-pixel Geiger-mode avalanche photodiode readout are presented. The photodiode has a metal-resistor-semiconductor layered structure and operates in the limited Geiger mode. In this short note we present results of background measurements carried out with a polystyrene based cast plastic 12.0x12.0x3.0 cm^3 size scintillator counter with a wavelength shifting fibre and a multi-pixel Geiger mode avalanche photodiode readout in the Baksan underground laboratory at a depth of 200 meters of water equivalent. The total counting rate of the scintillator counter measured at this depth and at a threshold corresponding to ~0.37 of a minimum ionizing particle is approximately 1.3 Hz., Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures, submitted to NIMA

Temporal and energy characteristics of the very-high-energy gamma-ray bursts from evaporating primordial black holes have been calculated by assuming that the photospheric and chromospheric effects are negligible. The technique of searching for such bursts on shower arrays is described. We show that the burst time profile and the array dead time should be taken into account to interpret experimental data. Based on data from the Andyrchy array of the Baksan Neutrino Observatory (Institute for Nuclear Research, Russian Academy of Sciences), we have obtained an upper limit on the number density of evaporating primordial black holes in a local region of space with a scale size of ~10^{-3} pc. Cosmic gamma-ray bursts with primary-photon energies > 10 GeV are sought in the data from the Andyrchy array obtained in the mode of detection of a single cosmic-ray component during a net observation period of 2005.4 d. The distribution of fluctuations of the detector counting rate agrees with the expected cosmic-ray background, the only exception being an event with a deviation of 7.9 sigma. Constraints on the number density of evaporating primordial black holes in a local region of the Galaxy are obtained for the chromospheric evaporation models., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

22 Sep 2005 Swift-BAT triggered and located GRB050922C. The light curve shows the intense broad peak with $T_{90}$ of $(5 \pm 1)$ s. The Nordic Optical Telescope has obtained spectra of the afterglow with several absorption features corresponding to a redshift of $z = 2.17 \pm 0.03$. Observation of optical transient of GRB050922C was carried out in the R-band with the 60-cm telescope equipped with a CCD on Peak Terskol (North Caucasus). The OT magnitude was fading from R $\approx 16$ to $\approx 17.5$. Detection of an oscillatory phenomenon in the R post-burst light curve is described in this work. Analysis of the R data reveals coherent harmonic with a period of $0.0050 \pm 0.0003$ days (7.2 min) during observing run of about 0.05 days ($\sim 70$ min). Amplitude of oscillations is about 0.05 magnitude. The simplest model suggests that GRB050922C may result from tidal disruption of a white dwarf star by a black hole of about one thousand solar mass. A new type of cosmic-ray experiment is under construction in the Pyh\"asalmi mine in the underground laboratory of the University of Oulu, Finland. It aims to study the composition of cosmic rays at and above the knee region. The experiment, called EMMA, will cover approximately 150 square-metres of detector area. The array is capable of measuring the multiplicity and the lateral distribution of underground muons, and the arrival direction of the air shower. The results of measuring diurnal variations of extensive air showers with energy above 100 TeV detected by the Andyrchi air shower array in 1995-2002 are presented. It is shown that solar diurnal wave of intensity is formed by pressure variations and Compton-Getting effect (due to the orbital motion of the Earth). The data on cosmic ray anisotropy of the Baksan underground scintillation telescope (BUST) are also presented for energies above 2.5 TeV covering the period 1982-1998. The local structure of Ba6Ge25 has been studied by x-ray diffraction and the atomic pair distribution function technique at 40 K and room temperature. Unambiguous evidence has been found that two out of three types of Ba atoms in Ba6Ge25 move off their positions and become locked in split sites at low temperatures., Comment: 5 pages and 4 figures, submitted to Solid State Communications

X-ray and neutron powder diffraction data as a function of temperature are analyzed for the colossal dielectric constant material CaCu3Ti4O12. The local structure is studied using atomic pair distribution function analysis. No evidence is found for enhanced oxygen displacement parameters suggesting that short-range octahedral tilt disorder is minimal. However, an unusual temperature dependence for the atomic displacement parameters of calcium and copper is observed. Temperature dependent modeling of the structure, using bond valence concepts, suggests that the calcium atoms become underbonded below approximately 260 K, which provides a rationale for the unusually high Ca displacement parameters at low temperature., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

The estimation of light velocity dispertion caused by quantum fluctuations influence on electromagnetic wave propogation in four-dimensional space-time is presented. Analytical cosmological solutions for the flat and open Universe for the case of cosmic vacuum model are obtained. The time delay of cosmic gamma-ray burst radiation is calculated. The delay is explained by propogation of dispersive electromagnetic wave in the expanding Universe. It is shown that the delay value depends on a model of the Universe. Many crystalline materials show chemical short range order and relaxation of neighboring atoms. Local structural information can be obtained by analyzing the atomic pair distribution function (PDF) obtained from powder diffraction data. In this paper, we present the successful extraction of chemical short range order parameters from the x-ray PDF of a quenched Cu_3Au sample., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

The structure of LiMoS2 has been experimentally determined for the first time. The approach of atomic pair distribution function (PDF) analysis was used because of the lack of well defined Bragg peaks due to the short structural coherence (~ 50 A) in this intercalation compound. This represents one of the first instances where the structure of such poorly diffracting material was determined from the total scattering including diffuse as well as Bragg scattering. The reduction of Mo by Li results in Mo-Mo bonding with the formation of chains of distorted Mo-S6 octahedra. Using the refined structural parameters the electronic band-structure for this material has been calculated and is in good agreement with observed material properties., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

Nearest and higher neighbor distances as well as bond length distributions (static and thermal) of the In_xGa_(1-x)As (0 and <111> displacements. Examination of the Kirkwood model indicates that the standard deviation (sigma) of the static disorder on the (In,Ga) sublattice is around 60% of the value on the As sublattice and the (In,Ga) atomic displacements are much more isotropic than those on the As sublattice. The single crystal diffuse scattering calculated from the Kirkwood model shows that atomic displacements are most strongly correlated along <110> directions., Comment: 10 pages, 12 figures

Structure factors for Cax/2AlxSi1-xO2 glasses (x=0,0.25,0.5,0.67) extended to a wave vector of magnitude Q= 40 1/A have been obtained by high-energy x-ray diffraction. For the first time, it is possible to resolve the contributions of Si-O, Al-O and Ca-O coordination polyhedra to the experimental atomic pair distribution functions (PDF). It has been found that both Si and Al are four-fold coordinated and so participate in a continuous tetrahedral network at low values of x. The number of network breaking defects in the form of non-bridging oxygens (NBO's) increases slowly with x until x=0.5 (NBO's ~ 10% at x=0.5). By x=0.67 the network breaking defects become significant as evidenced by the significant drop in the average coordination number of Si. By contrast, Al-O tetrahedra remain free of NBO's and fully integrated in the Al/Si-O network for all values of x. Calcium maintains a rather uniform coordination sphere of approximately 5 oxygen atoms for all values of x. The results suggest that not only Si/Al-O tetrahedra but Ca-O polyhedra, too, play a role in determining the glassy structure.

High resolution total and indium differential atomic pair distribution functions (PDFs) for In_(0.5)Ga_(0.5)As alloys have been obtained by high energy and anomalous x-ray diffraction experiments, respectively. The first peak in the total PDF is resolved as a doublet due to the presence of two distinct bond lengths, In-As and Ga-As. The In differential PDF, which involves only atomic pairs containing In, yields chemical specific information and helps ease the structure data interpretation. Both PDFs have been fit with structure models and the way in that the underlying cubic zinc-blende lattice of In_(0.5)Ga_(0.5)As semiconductor alloy distorts locally to accommodate the distinct In-As and Ga-As bond lengths present has been quantified., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figure

High real-space-resolution atomic pair distribution functions of La_(1-x)Ca_(x)MnO_3 (x=0.12, 0.25 and 0.33) have been measured using high-energy x-ray powder diffraction to study the size and shape of the MnO_6 octahedron as a function of temperature and doping. In the paramagnetic insulating phase we find evidence for three distinct bond-lengths (~ 1.88, 1.95 and 2.15A) which we ascribe to Mn^{4+}-O, Mn^{3+}-O short and Mn^{3+}-O long bonds respectively. In the ferromagnetic metallic (FM) phase, for x=0.33 and T=20K, we find a single Mn-O bond-length; however, as the metal-insulator transition is approached either by increasing T or decreasing x, intensity progressively appears around r=2.15 and in the region 1.8 - 1.9A suggesting the appearance of Mn^{3+}-O long bonds and short Mn^{4+}-O bonds. This is strong evidence that charge localized and delocalized phases coexist close to the metal-insulator transition in the FM phase., Comment: 8 pages, 8 postscript figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. High real-space resolution atomic pair distribution functions (PDF)s from the alloy series Ga_1-xIn_xAs have been obtained using high-energy x-ray diffraction. The first peak in the PDF is resolved as a doublet due to the presence of two nearest neighbor bond lengths, Ga-As and In-As, as previously observed using XAFS. The widths of nearest, and higher, neighbor pairs are analyzed by separating the strain broadening from the thermal motion. The strain broadening is five times larger for distant atomic neighbors as compared to nearest neighbors. The results are in agreement with model calculations., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

The data on muon groups observed at Baksan underground scintillation telescope is analyzed. In this analysis we compare the experimental data with calulations, based on a superposition model in order to obtain the effective atomic number of primary cosmic rays in the energy range 10 to the 13th power to 10 to the 15th power eV.
