Treatment selection in breast cancer is guided by molecular subtypes and clinical characteristics. Recurrence risk assessment plays a crucial role in personalizing treatment. Current methods, including genomic assays, have limited accuracy and clinical utility, leading to suboptimal decisions for many patients. We developed a test for breast cancer patient stratification based on digital pathology and clinical characteristics using novel AI methods. Specifically, we utilized a vision transformer-based pan-cancer foundation model trained with self-supervised learning to extract features from digitized H&E-stained slides. These features were integrated with clinical data to form a multi-modal AI test predicting cancer recurrence and death. The test was developed and evaluated using data from a total of 8,161 breast cancer patients across 15 cohorts originating from seven countries. Of these, 3,502 patients from five cohorts were used exclusively for evaluation, while the remaining patients were used for training. Our test accurately predicted our primary endpoint, disease-free interval, in the five external cohorts (C-index: 0.71 [0.68-0.75], HR: 3.63 [3.02-4.37, p<0.01]). In a direct comparison (N=858), the AI test was more accurate than Oncotype DX, the standard-of-care 21-gene assay, with a C-index of 0.67 [0.61-0.74] versus 0.61 [0.49-0.73], respectively. Additionally, the AI test added independent information to Oncotype DX in a multivariate analysis (HR: 3.11 [1.91-5.09, p<0.01)]). The test demonstrated robust accuracy across all major breast cancer subtypes, including TNBC (C-index: 0.71 [0.62-0.81], HR: 3.81 [2.35-6.17, p=0.02]), where no diagnostic tools are currently recommended by clinical guidelines. These results suggest that our AI test can improve accuracy, extend applicability to a wider range of patients, and enhance access to treatment selection tools.

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based bi-modal salient object detection (BSOD) aims to segment salient objects in a scene utilizing complementary cues in unaligned RGB and thermal image pairs. However, the high computational expense of existing UAV-based BSOD models limits their applicability to real-world UAV devices. To address this problem, we propose an efficient Fourier filter network with contrastive learning that achieves both real-time and accurate performance. Specifically, we first design a semantic contrastive alignment loss to align the two modalities at the semantic level, which facilitates mutual refinement in a parameter-free way. Second, inspired by the fast Fourier transform that obtains global relevance in linear complexity, we propose synchronized alignment fusion, which aligns and fuses bi-modal features in the channel and spatial dimensions by a hierarchical filtering mechanism. Our proposed model, AlignSal, reduces the number of parameters by 70.0%, decreases the floating point operations by 49.4%, and increases the inference speed by 152.5% compared to the cutting-edge BSOD model (i.e., MROS). Extensive experiments on the UAV RGB-T 2400 and three weakly aligned datasets demonstrate that AlignSal achieves both real-time inference speed and better performance and generalizability compared to sixteen state-of-the-art BSOD models across most evaluation metrics. In addition, our ablation studies further verify AlignSal's potential in boosting the performance of existing aligned BSOD models on UAV-based unaligned data. We present 850 {\mu}m thermal dust polarization observations with a resolution of 14.4"(~ 0.13 pc) towards an infrared dark cloud G16.96+0.27 using JCMT/POL-2. The average magnetic field orientation, which roughly agrees with the larger-scale magnetic field orientation traced by the Planck 353 GHz data, is approximately perpendicular to the filament structure. The estimated plane-of-sky magnetic field strength is ~ 96 {\mu}G and ~ 60 {\mu}G using two variants of the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi methods. We calculate the virial and magnetic critical parameters to evaluate the relative importance of gravity, the magnetic field, and turbulence. The magnetic field and turbulence are both weaker than gravity, but magnetic fields and turbulence together are equal to gravity, suggesting that G16.96+0.27 is in a quasi-equilibrium state. The cloud-magnetic-field alignment is found to have a trend moving away from perpendicularity in the dense regions, which may serve as a tracer of potential fragmentation in such quiescent filaments., Comment: Accepted by ApJ. 13 pages, 5 figures

In this paper, we present a detailed analysis of the IRS 17 filament within the intermediate-mass protocluster IRAS 08448-4343 (of $\sim\,10^3\,\rm L_{\odot}$), using ALMA data from the ATOMS 3-mm and QUARKS 1.3-mm surveys. The IRS 17 filament, which spans $\sim$54000 au ($0.26\,\rm pc$) in length and $\sim$4000 au ($0.02\,\rm pc$) in width, exhibits a complex, multi-component velocity field, and harbours hierarchical substructures. These substructures include three bundles of seven velocity-coherent fibers, and 29 dense ($n\sim 10^8\,\rm cm^{-3}$) condensations. The fibers have a median length of $\sim 4500\,\rm au$ and a median width of $\sim 1400\,\rm au$. Among these fibers, four are identified as ``fertile", each hosting at least three dense condensations, which are regarded as the ``seeds" of star formation. While the detected cores are randomly spaced within the IRS\,17 filament based on the 3-mm dust continuum image, periodic spacing ($\sim1600\,\rm au$) of condensations is observed in the fertile fibers according to the 1.3-mm dust map, consistent with the predictions of linear isothermal cylinder fragmentation models. This paper introduces a new task in Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Digital Humanities (DH): Mining Asymmetric Intertextuality. Asymmetric intertextuality refers to one-sided relationships between texts, where one text cites, quotes, or borrows from another without reciprocation. These relationships are common in literature and historical texts, where a later work references aclassical or older text that remain static. We propose a scalable and adaptive approach for mining asymmetric intertextuality, leveraging a split-normalize-merge paradigm. In this approach, documents are split into smaller chunks, normalized into structured data using LLM-assisted metadata extraction, and merged during querying to detect both explicit and implicit intertextual relationships. Our system handles intertextuality at various levels, from direct quotations to paraphrasing and cross-document influence, using a combination of metadata filtering, vector similarity search, and LLM-based verification. This method is particularly well-suited for dynamically growing corpora, such as expanding literary archives or historical databases. By enabling the continuous integration of new documents, the system can scale efficiently, making it highly valuable for digital humanities practitioners in literacy studies, historical research and related fields.

Innovation and development of renewable energy devices are crucial for reaching a sustainable and environmentally conscious future. This work focuses on the development of a new type of renewable energy devices in the context of Smart Garden at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, which aims to design a bladeless wind turbine for urban areas, addressing the pressing need for clean energy locally and globally. Traditional wind turbines have been widely adopted in recent decades, while bladeless wind turbines have also displayed their advantages and uniqueness in urban areas. A Vortex Bladeless Wind Turbine (VBWT) is modeled by using Fusion 360 to optimize wind energy generation in urban settings with limited space and buildings-dominated landscape. Optimal parameters of the VBWT were obtained by comparing the results of drag force, lift force and deflection, via the simulations in Ansys. Hardware of proposed bladeless wind turbine has been assembled and developed by 3-dimensional printing. Additional tests and adjustments on hardware further improve the performance of the developed wind turbine. The analysis of biophysical neural networks (BNNs) has been a longstanding focus in computational neuroscience. A central yet unresolved challenge in BNN analysis lies in deciphering the correlations between neuronal and synaptic dynamics, their connectivity patterns, and learning process. To address this, we introduce a novel BNN analysis framework grounded in network representation learning (NRL), which leverages attention scores to uncover intricate correlations between network components and their features. Our framework integrates a new computational graph (CG)-based BNN representation, a bio-inspired graph attention network (BGAN) that enables multiscale correlation analysis across BNN representations, and an extensive BNN dataset. The CG-based representation captures key computational features, information flow, and structural relationships underlying neuronal and synaptic dynamics, while BGAN reflects the compositional structure of neurons, including dendrites, somas, and axons, as well as bidirectional information flows between BNN components. The dataset comprises publicly available models from ModelDB, reconstructed using the Python and standardized in NeuroML format, and is augmented with data derived from canonical neuron and synapse models. Single spot radiometers are widely used to estimate temperature of body heated by high temperature, specially blast furnace, glass fusion, boiler of power plant, and so on. However, fitting functions required for current-to-voltage converter, non-inverting amplifier, and logarithmic amplifier have never reported. The advancement of robotic systems has revolutionized numerous industries, yet their operation often demands specialized technical knowledge, limiting accessibility for non-expert users. This paper introduces ROSA (Robot Operating System Agent), an AI-powered agent that bridges the gap between the Robot Operating System (ROS) and natural language interfaces. By leveraging state-of-the-art language models and integrating open-source frameworks, ROSA enables operators to interact with robots using natural language, translating commands into actions and interfacing with ROS through well-defined tools. ROSA's design is modular and extensible, offering seamless integration with both ROS1 and ROS2, along with safety mechanisms like parameter validation and constraint enforcement to ensure secure, reliable operations. While ROSA is originally designed for ROS, it can be extended to work with other robotics middle-wares to maximize compatibility across missions. ROSA enhances human-robot interaction by democratizing access to complex robotic systems, empowering users of all expertise levels with multi-modal capabilities such as speech integration and visual perception. Ethical considerations are thoroughly addressed, guided by foundational principles like Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics, ensuring that AI integration promotes safety, transparency, privacy, and accountability. By making robotic technology more user-friendly and accessible, ROSA not only improves operational efficiency but also sets a new standard for responsible AI use in robotics and potentially future mission operations. We study the topological order that arises from chiral states with ${\rm SU}(N)$ or ${\rm SO}(N)$ edge-state symmetry. This extends our previous study of topological orders that descend from the bosonic $E_8$ quantum Hall state. We use exactly solvable models of coupled electron wires to construct states with ${\rm SU}(m)_n$, ${\rm SO}(m)_n$, or ${\rm Sp}(m)_n$ topological order for various levels $n$. We use our constructions to write down string operators for various non-Abelian anyons. We thereby provide a systematic, microscopic understanding of quantum Hall states, topological superconductors, and spin liquids with emergent non-Abelian quasiparticle excitations, including those of Ising, metaplectic, and Fibonacci type., Comment: 32 pages, 2 figures

Traditionally, gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are classified as long and short GRBs, with $T_{90} = 2$ s being the threshold duration. Generally, long-duration GRBs (LGRBs, $T_{90}>2$ s) are associated with the collapse of massive stars, and short-duration (SGRBs, $T_{90}<2$ s) are associated with the compact binary mergers involving at least one neutron star. However, the existence of a population of so-called ``peculiar GRBs", i.e., LGRBs originating from mergers, or long Type I GRBs, and SGRBs originating from collapsars, or short Type II GRBs, have challenged the traditional paradigm of GRB classification. Finding more peculiar GRBs may help to give us more insight into this issue. In this work, we analyze the properties of machine learning identified long Type I GRBs and short Type II GRBs candidates, long GRBs-I and short GRBs-II (the so-called ``peculiar GRBs"). We find that long GRBs-I almost always exhibit properties similar to Type I, which suggests that the merger may indeed produce GRBs with $T_{90}>2$ s. Furthermore, according to the probability given by the redshift distribution, short GRBs-II almost exhibit properties similar to Type II. This suggests that the populations of short Type II GRBs are not scarce and that they are hidden in a large number of samples without redshifts, which is unfavorable to the interpretation that the jet progression leads to a missed main emission., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures, Accepted for publication in the ApJ

The proper class of Conway's surreal numbers forms a rich totally ordered algebraically closed field with many arithmetic and algebraic properties close to those of real numbers, the ordinals, and infinitesimal numbers. In this paper, we formalize the construction of Conway's numbers in Mizar using two approaches and propose a bridge between them, aiming to combine their advantages for efficient formalization. By replacing transfinite induction-recursion with transfinite induction, we streamline their construction. Additionally, we introduce a method to merge proofs from both approaches using global choice, facilitating formal proof. We demonstrate that surreal numbers form a field, including the square root, and that they encompass subsets such as reals, ordinals, and powers of $\omega$. We report the first measurement of the azimuthal anisotropy of J$/\psi$ at forward rapidity ($1.2<|\eta|<2.2$) in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The data were collected by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 and 2016 with integrated luminosity of 14.5~nb$^{-1}$. The second Fourier coefficient ($v_2$) of the azimuthal distribution of $J/\psi$ is determined as a function of the transverse momentum ($p_T$) using the event-plane method. The measurements were performed for several selections of collision centrality: 0\%--50\%, 10\%--60\%, and 10\%-40\%. We find that in all cases the values of $v_2(p_T)$, which quantify the elliptic flow of J$/\psi$, are consistent with zero. The results are consistent with measurements at midrapidity, indicating no significant elliptic flow of the J$/\psi$ within the quark-gluon-plasma medium at collision energies of $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV., Comment: 369 authors from 72 institutions, 12 pages, 7 figures, 5 tables. v1 is version submitted to Physical Review C. We present the first forward-rapidity measurements of elliptic anisotropy of open-heavy-flavor muons at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The measurements are based on data samples of Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV collected by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 and 2016 with integrated luminosity of 14.5~nb$^{-1}$. Thermodynamics of degenerate Fermi gases has been extensively studied through various aspects such as Pauli blocking effects, collective modes, BCS superfluidity, and more. Despite this, multi-component fermions with imbalanced spin configurations remain largely unexplored, particularly beyond the two-component scenario. In this work, we generalize the thermodynamic study of SU($N$) fermions to spin-imbalanced configurations based on density fluctuations. Theoretically, we provide closed-form expressions of density fluctuation across all temperature ranges for general spin population setups. Experimentally, after calibrating the measurements with deeply degenerate $^{173}$Yb Fermi gases under spin-balanced configurations ($N\leq$~6), we examine the density fluctuations in spin-imbalanced systems. Specifically, we investigate two-species and four-species configurations to validate our theoretical predictions. Our analysis indicates that interaction enhancement effects can be significant even in highly spin-imbalanced systems. Finally, as an application, we use this approach to examine the decoherence process. Industry 4.0 has revolutionized manufacturing by driving digitalization and shifting the paradigm toward additive manufacturing (AM). Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), a key AM technology, enables the creation of highly customized, cost-effective products with minimal material waste through layer-by-layer extrusion, posing a significant challenge to traditional subtractive methods. However, the susceptibility of material extrusion techniques to errors often requires expert intervention to detect and mitigate defects that can severely compromise product quality. While automated error detection and machine learning models exist, their generalizability across diverse 3D printer setups, firmware, and sensors is limited, and deep learning methods require extensive labeled datasets, hindering scalability and adaptability. To address these challenges, we present a process monitoring and control framework that leverages pre-trained Large Language Models (LLMs) alongside 3D printers to detect and address printing defects. The LLM evaluates print quality by analyzing images captured after each layer or print segment, identifying failure modes and querying the printer for relevant parameters. It then generates and executes a corrective action plan. We validated the effectiveness of the proposed framework in identifying defects by comparing it against a control group of engineers with diverse AM expertise. Our evaluation demonstrated that LLM-based agents not only accurately identify common 3D printing errors, such as inconsistent extrusion, stringing, warping, and layer adhesion, but also effectively determine the parameters causing these failures and autonomously correct them without any need for human intervention.

The jet cross-section and jet-substructure observables in $p$$+$$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV were measured by the PHENIX Collaboration at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The \emph{Stanley--Yan} (SY) \emph{inequality} gives the ultra-log-concavity for the numbers of bases of a matroid which have given sizes of intersections with $k$ fixed disjoint sets. The inequality was proved by Stanley (1981) for regular matroids, and by Yan (2023) in full generality. In the original paper, Stanley asked for equality conditions of the SY~inequality, and proved total equality conditions for regular matroids in the case $k=0$. In this paper, we completely resolve Stanley's problem. First, we obtain an explicit description of the equality cases of the SY inequality for $k=0$, extending Stanley's results to general matroids and removing the ``total equality'' assumption. Second, for $k\ge 1$, we prove that the equality cases of the SY inequality cannot be described in a sense that they are not in the polynomial hierarchy unless the polynomial hierarchy collapses to a finite level., Comment: 34 pages

In this paper, we introduce a method to tackle Domain Generalized Semantic Segmentation (DGSS) by utilizing domain-invariant semantic knowledge from text embeddings of vision-language models. We employ the text embeddings as object queries within a transformer-based segmentation framework (textual object queries). These queries are regarded as a domain-invariant basis for pixel grouping in DGSS. To leverage the power of textual object queries, we introduce a novel framework named the textual query-driven mask transformer (tqdm). Our tqdm aims to (1) generate textual object queries that maximally encode domain-invariant semantics and (2) enhance the semantic clarity of dense visual features. Additionally, we suggest three regularization losses to improve the efficacy of tqdm by aligning between visual and textual features. By utilizing our method, the model can comprehend inherent semantic information for classes of interest, enabling it to generalize to extreme domains (e.g., sketch style). Our tqdm achieves 68.9 mIoU on GTA5$\rightarrow$Cityscapes, outperforming the prior state-of-the-art method by 2.5 mIoU. The PHENIX experiment measured the centrality dependence of two-pion Bose-Einstein correlation functions in $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$~GeV Au$+$Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The data are well represented by L\'evy-stable source distributions. The extracted source parameters are the correlation-strength parameter $\lambda$, the L\'evy index of stability $\alpha$, and the L\'evy-scale parameter $R$ as a function of transverse mass $m_T$ and centrality. The $\lambda(m_T)$ parameter is constant at larger values of $m_T$, but decreases as $m_T$ decreases. The L\'evy scale parameter $R(m_T)$ decreases with $m_T$ and exhibits proportionality to the length scale of the nuclear overlap region. The L\'evy exponent $\alpha(m_T)$ is independent of $m_T$ within uncertainties in each investigated centrality bin, but shows a clear centrality dependence. At all centralities, the L\'evy exponent $\alpha$ is significantly different from that of Gaussian ($\alpha=2$) or Cauchy ($\alpha=1$) source distributions. Comparisons to the predictions of Monte-Carlo simulations of resonance-decay chains show that in all but the most peripheral centrality class (50%-60%), the obtained results are inconsistent with the measurements, unless a significant reduction of the in-medium mass of the $\eta'$ meson is included. The fifth Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-V) Local Volume Mapper (LVM) is a wide-field integral field unit (IFU) survey that uses an array of four 160 mm fixed telescopes with siderostats to minimize the number of moving parts. Individual telescope observes the science field or calibration field independently and is synchronized with the science exposure. We developed the LVM Acquisition and Guiding Package (LVMAGP) optimized telescope control software program for LVM observations, which can simultaneously control four focusers, three K-mirrors, one fiber selector, four mounts (siderostats), and seven guide cameras. This software is built on a hierarchical architecture and the SDSS framework and provides three key sequences: autofocus, field acquisition, and autoguide. We designed and fabricated a proto-model siderostat to test the telescope pointing model and LVMAGP software. The mirrors of the proto-model were designed as an isogrid open-back type, which reduced the weight by 46% and enabled reaching thermal equilibrium quickly. Additionally, deflection due to bolting torque, self-gravity, and thermal deformation was simulated, and the maximum scatter of the pointing model induced by the tilt of optomechanics was predicted to be $4'.4$, which can be compensated for by the field acquisition sequence. We performed a real sky test of LVMAGP with the proto-model siderostat and obtained field acquisition and autoguide accuracies of $0''.38$ and $1''.5$, respectively. Aortic stenosis (AS) is the most common valvular heart disease in developed countries. High-fidelity preclinical models can improve AS management by enabling therapeutic innovation, early diagnosis, and tailored treatment planning. However, their use is currently limited by complex workflows necessitating lengthy expert-driven manual operations. Here, we propose an AI-powered computational framework for accelerated and democratized patient-specific modeling of AS hemodynamics from computed tomography. First, we demonstrate that our automated meshing algorithms can generate task-ready geometries for both computational and benchtop simulations with higher accuracy and 100 times faster than existing approaches. Then, we show that our approach can be integrated with fluid-structure interaction and soft robotics models to accurately recapitulate a broad spectrum of clinical hemodynamic measurements of diverse AS patients. Full spectrum fitting is a powerful tool for estimating the stellar populations of galaxies, but the fitting results are often significantly influenced by internal dust attenuation. For understanding how the choice of the internal dust correction method affects the detailed stellar populations estimated from the full spectrum fitting, we analyze the Sydney-Australian Astronomical Observatory Multi-object Integral field spectrograph (SAMI) galaxy survey data using the Penalized PiXel-Fitting (PPXF) package. Three choices are compared: (Choice-1) using the PPXF reddening option, (Choice-2) using the multiplicative Legendre polynomial, and (Choice-3) using none of them (no dust correction). In any case, the total mean stellar populations show reasonable mass-age and mass-metallicity relations (MTR and MZR), although the correlations appear to be strongest for Choice-1 (MTR) and Choice-2 (MZR). When we compare the age-divided mean stellar populations, the MZR of young (< 10^9.5 yr ~ 3.2 Gyr) stellar components in Choice-2 is consistent with the gas-phase MZR, whereas those in the other two choices hardly are. On the other hand, the MTR of old (>= 10^9.5 yr) stellar components in Choice-1 seems to be more reasonable than that in Choice-2, because the old stellar components in low-mass galaxies tend to be relatively younger than those in massive galaxies. High-momentum two-particle correlations are a useful tool for studying jet-quenching effects in the quark-gluon plasma. Angular correlations between neutral-pion triggers and charged hadrons with transverse momenta in the range 4--12~GeV/$c$ and 0.5--7~GeV/$c$, respectively, have been measured by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 for Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$~GeV. Suppression is observed in the yield of high-momentum jet fragments opposite the trigger particle, which indicates jet suppression stemming from in-medium partonic energy loss, while enhancement is observed for low-momentum particles. The ratio and differences between the yield in Au$+$Au collisions and $p$$+$$p$ collisions, $I_{AA}$ and $\Delta_{AA}$, as a function of the trigger-hadron azimuthal separation, $\Delta\phi$, are measured for the first time at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Metamorphic testing has become one mainstream technique to address the notorious oracle problem in software testing, thanks to its great successes in revealing real-life bugs in a wide variety of software systems. Metamorphic relations, the core component of metamorphic testing, have continuously attracted research interests from both academia and industry. In the last decade, a rapidly increasing number of studies have been conducted to systematically generate metamorphic relations from various sources and for different application domains. Accurately localizing two-dimensional (2D) ultrasound (US) fetal brain images in the 3D brain, using minimal computational resources, is an important task for automated US analysis of fetal growth and development. We propose an uncertainty-aware deep learning model for automated 3D plane localization in 2D fetal brain images. Specifically, a multi-head network is trained to jointly regress 3D plane pose from 2D images in terms of different geometric transformations. The model explicitly learns to predict uncertainty to allocate higher weight to inputs with low variances across different transformations to improve performance. Our proposed method, QAERTS, demonstrates superior pose estimation accuracy than the state-of-the-art and most of the uncertainty-based approaches, leading to 9% improvement on plane angle (PA) for localization accuracy, and 8% on normalized cross-correlation (NCC) for sampled image quality. QAERTS also demonstrates efficiency, containing 5$\times$ fewer parameters than ensemble-based approach, making it advantageous in resource-constrained settings. In robotic manipulation, tactile sensors are indispensable, especially when dealing with soft objects, objects of varying dimensions, or those out of the robot's direct line of sight. Traditional tactile sensors often grapple with challenges related to cost and durability. To address these issues, our study introduces a novel approach to visuo-tactile sensing with an emphasis on economy and replacablity. Our proposed sensor, BeadSight, uses hydro-gel beads encased in a vinyl bag as an economical, easily replaceable sensing medium. When the sensor makes contact with a surface, the deformation of the hydrogel beads is observed using a rear camera. This observation is then passed through a U-net Neural Network to predict the forces acting on the surface of the bead bag, in the form of a pressure map. Our results show that the sensor can accurately predict these pressure maps, detecting the location and magnitude of forces applied to the surface. Shear-thinning viscosity is a non-Newtonian behaviour that active particles often encounter in biological fluids such as blood and mucus. The fundamental question of how this ubiquitous non-Newtonian rheology affects the propulsion of active particles has attracted substantial interest. In particular, spherical Janus particles driven by self-diffusiophresis, a major physico-chemical propulsion mechanism of synthetic active particles, were shown to always swim slower in a shear-thinning fluid than in a Newtonian fluid. In this work, we move beyond the spherical limit to examine the effect of particle eccentricity on self-diffusiophoretic propulsion in a shear-thinning fluid. We use a combination of asymptotic analysis and numerical simulations to show that shear-thinning rheology can enhance self-diffusiophoretic propulsion of a spheroidal particle, in stark contrast to previous findings for the spherical case. A systematic characterization of the dependence of the propulsion speed on the particle's active surface coverage has also uncovered an intriguing feature associated with the propulsion speeds of a pair of complementarily coated particles not previously reported. Symmetry arguments are presented to elucidate how this new feature emerges as a combined effect of anisotropy of the spheroidal geometry and nonlinearity in fluid rheology., Comment: 21 Pages, 8 figures

We develop a set of variable selection methods for the Cox model under interval censoring, in the ultra-high dimensional setting where the dimensionality can grow exponentially with the sample size. The methods select covariates via a penalized nonparametric maximum likelihood estimation with some popular penalty functions, including lasso, adaptive lasso, SCAD, and MCP. We prove that our penalized variable selection methods with folded concave penalties or adaptive lasso penalty enjoy the oracle property. Extensive numerical experiments show that the proposed methods have satisfactory empirical performance under various scenarios. The utility of the methods is illustrated through an application to a genome-wide association study of age to early childhood caries.

Astronauts participating in lunar landing missions will encounter exposure to albedo particles emitted from the lunar surface as well as primary high-energy particles in the spectra of galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) and solar particle events (SPEs). While existing studies have examined particle energy spectra and absorbed doses in limited radiation exposure scenarios on and near the Moon, comprehensive research encompassing various shielding amounts and large SPEs on the lunar surface remains lacking. Additionally, detailed organ dose equivalents of albedo particles in a human model on the lunar surface have yet to be investigated. This work assesses the organ dose equivalents of albedo neutrons and protons during historically large SPEs in August 1972 and September 1989 utilizing realistic computational anthropomorphic human phantom for the first time. Dosimetric quantities within human organs have been evaluated based on the PHITS Monte Carlo simulation results and quality factors of the state-of-the-art NASA Space Cancer Risk (NSCR) model, as well as ICRP publications. The results with the NSCR model indicate that the albedo contribution to organ dose equivalent is less than 3% for 1 g/cm2 aluminum shielding, while it increases to more than 20% in some organs for 20 g/cm2 aluminum shielding during exposure to low-energy-proton-rich SPEs., Comment: Pre-print with 25 pages

Insufficient overlap between the melt pools produced during Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) can lead to lack-of-fusion defects and deteriorated mechanical and fatigue performance. In-situ monitoring of the melt pool subsurface morphology requires specialized equipment that may not be readily accessible or scalable. Therefore, we introduce a machine learning framework to correlate in-situ two-color thermal images observed via high-speed color imaging to the two-dimensional profile of the melt pool cross-section. Specifically, we employ a hybrid CNN-Transformer architecture to establish a correlation between single bead off-axis thermal image sequences and melt pool cross-section contours measured via optical microscopy. In this architecture, a ResNet model embeds the spatial information contained within the thermal images to a latent vector, while a Transformer model correlates the sequence of embedded vectors to extract temporal information. Our framework is able to model the curvature of the subsurface melt pool structure, with improved performance in high energy density regimes compared to analytical melt pool models. The performance of this model is evaluated through dimensional and geometric comparisons to the corresponding experimental melt pool observations.

We present a deep learning approach for quantifying and localizing ex-situ porosity within Laser Powder Bed Fusion fabricated samples utilizing in-situ thermal image monitoring data. Our goal is to build the real time porosity map of parts based on thermal images acquired during the build. The quantification task builds upon the established Convolutional Neural Network model architecture to predict pore count and the localization task leverages the spatial and temporal attention mechanisms of the novel Video Vision Transformer model to indicate areas of expected porosity. Our model for porosity quantification achieved a $R^2$ score of 0.57 and our model for porosity localization produced an average IoU score of 0.32 and a maximum of 1.0. This work is setting the foundations of part porosity "Digital Twins" based on additive manufacturing monitoring data and can be applied downstream to reduce time-intensive post-inspection and testing activities during part qualification and certification. In addition, we seek to accelerate the acquisition of crucial insights normally only available through ex-situ part evaluation by means of machine learning analysis of in-situ process monitoring data.

Developing quantum networks necessitates coherently connecting distant systems via remote strong coupling. Here, we demonstrate long-distance coherence in cavity magnonics operating in the linear regime. By locally setting the cavity near critical coupling with travelling photons, non-local magnon-photon coherence is established via strong coupling over a 2-meter distance. We observe two anomalies in this long-distance coherence: first, the coupling strength oscillates twice the period of conventional photon-mediated couplings; second, clear mode splitting is observed within the cavity linewidth. Both effects cannot be explained by conventional coupled-mode theory, which reveal the tip of an iceberg of photon-mediated coupling in systems under critical driving. Two-dimensional (2D) freehand ultrasonography is one of the most commonly used medical imaging modalities, particularly in obstetrics and gynaecology. However, it only captures 2D cross-sectional views of inherently 3D anatomies, losing valuable contextual information. As an alternative to requiring costly and complex 3D ultrasound scanners, 3D volumes can be constructed from 2D scans using machine learning. However this usually requires long computational time. Here, we propose RapidVol: a neural representation framework to speed up slice-to-volume ultrasound reconstruction. We use tensor-rank decomposition, to decompose the typical 3D volume into sets of tri-planes, and store those instead, as well as a small neural network. A set of 2D ultrasound scans, with their ground truth (or estimated) 3D position and orientation (pose) is all that is required to form a complete 3D reconstruction. Reconstructions are formed from real fetal brain scans, and then evaluated by requesting novel cross-sectional views. When compared to prior approaches based on fully implicit representation (e.g. neural radiance fields), our method is over 3x quicker, 46% more accurate, and if given inaccurate poses is more robust. Further speed-up is also possible by reconstructing from a structural prior rather than from scratch.

We consider deformations of the scalar curvature of a partially integrable pseudohermitian manifold, in analogy with the work of Fischer and Marsden on Riemannian manifolds. We address two longstanding open problems, one originating in PL topology, another in birational geometry. First, we prove the weighted version of Oda's \emph{strong factorization conjecture} (1978), and prove that every two birational toric varieties are related by a common iterated blowup (at rationally smooth points). Second, we prove that every two PL homeomorphic polyhedra have a common stellar subdivisions, as conjectured by Alexander in~1930.

Filamentary structures are ubiquitously found in high-mass star-forming clouds. To investigate the relationship between filaments and star formation, we carry out the INFANT (INvestigations of massive Filaments ANd sTar formation) survey, a multi-scale, multi-wavelength survey of massive filamentary clouds with ALMA band 3/band 6 and VLA K band. In this first paper, we present the ALMA band 6 continuum observations toward a sample of 8 high-mass star forming filaments. We covered each target with approximately rectangular mosaic field of view with two 12-m array configurations, achieving an angular resolution of $\sim$0.6" (2700 AU at 4.5 kpc) and a continuum rms of $\sim$0.1 mJy/beam ($\sim$0.06 Msun in gas mass assuming 15 K). We identify cores using the getsf and astrodendro and find the former is more robust in terms of both identification and measuring flux densities. We identify in total 183 dense cores (15--36 cores in each cloud) and classify their star formation states via outflow and warm gas tracers. The protostellar cores are statistically more massive than the prestellar cores, possibly indicating further accretion onto cores after formation of protostars. For the high-mass end ($M_\text{core}$ $>$ 1.5 Msun) of the core mass function (CMF) we derive a power-law index of $-$1.15 $\pm$ 0.12 for the whole sample, and $-$1.70 $\pm$ 0.25 for the prestellar population. We also find a steepening trend in CMF with cloud evolution ($-$0.89 $\pm$ 0.15 for the young group v.s. $-$1.44 $\pm$ 0.25 for the evolved group) and discuss its implication for cluster formation., Comment: 25 pages, 8 figures, accepted for ApJ

We report the detection of gamma-ray emission by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi-LAT) towards the young massive star cluster RCW 38 in the 1-500 GeV photon energy range. We found spatially extended GeV emission towards the direction of RCW 38, which is best modelled by a Gaussian disc of 0.23$\deg$ radius with a significance of the extension is $\sim 11.4 \sigma$. Furthermore, the spatial correlation with the ionized and molecular gas content favors the hadronic origin of the gamma-ray emission. The gamma-ray spectrum of RCW 38 has a relatively hard photon index of $2.44 \pm 0.03$, which is similar to other young massive star clusters. With the growth of data sizes, visualizing them becomes more complex. Desktop displays are insufficient for presenting and collaborating on complex data visualizations. Large displays could provide the necessary space to demo or present complex data visualizations. However, designing and developing visualizations for such displays pose distinct challenges. Identifying these challenges is essential for researchers, designers, and developers in the field of data visualization. In this study, we aim to gain insights into the challenges encountered by designers and developers when creating data visualizations for large displays. We conducted a series of semi-structured interviews with experts who had experience in large displays and, through affinity diagramming, categorized the challenges.

Quantum informatic quantities such as entanglement entropy are useful in detecting quantum phase transitions. Recently, a new entanglement measure called pseudo-entropy was proposed which is a generalization of the more well-known entanglement entropy. It has many nice properties and is useful in the study of post-selection measurements. In this paper, one of our goals is to explore the properties of pseudo-entropy and study the effectiveness of it as a quantum chaos diagnostic, i.e. as a tool to distinguish between chaotic and integrable systems. Using various variants of the SYK model, we study the signal of quantum chaos captured in the pseudo-entropy and relate it to the spectral form factor (SFF) and local operator entanglement (LOE). We also explore another quantity called the negativity of entanglement which is a useful entanglement measure for a mixed state. We generalized it to accommodate the transition matrix and called it pseudo-negativity in analogy to pseudo-entropy. We found that it also nicely captures the spectral properties of a chaotic system and hence also plays a role as a tool of quantum chaos diagnostic., Comment: 31 pages, 12 figures

Calcification has significant influence over cardiovascular diseases and interventions. Detailed characterization of calcification is thus desired for predictive modeling, but calcified heart meshes for physics-driven simulations are still often reconstructed using manual operations. This poses a major bottleneck for large-scale adoption of computational simulations for research or clinical use. To address this, we propose an end-to-end automated meshing algorithm that enables robust incorporation of patient-specific calcification onto a given heart mesh. The algorithm provides a substantial speed-up from several hours of manual meshing to $\sim$1 minute of automated computation, and it solves an important problem that cannot be addressed with recent template registration-based heart meshing techniques. We validated our final calcified heart meshes with extensive simulations, demonstrating our ability to accurately model patient-specific aortic stenosis and Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement. Our method may serve as an important tool for accelerating the development and usage of physics-driven simulations for cardiac digital twins.

In $1996$, H.-D. Cao constructed a $U(n)$-invariant steady gradient K\"ahler-Ricci soliton on $\mathbb{C}^{n}$ and asked whether every steady gradient K\"ahler-Ricci soliton of positive curvature on $\mathbb{C}^{n}$ is necessarily $U(n)$-invariant (and hence unique up to scaling). Recently, Apostolov-Cifarelli answered this question in the negative for $n=2$. Here, we construct a family of $U(1)\times U(n-1)$-invariant, but not $U(n)$-invariant, complete steady gradient K\"ahler-Ricci solitons with strictly positive curvature operator on real $(1,\,1)$-forms (in particular, with strictly positive sectional curvature) on $\mathbb{C}^{n}$ for $n\geq3$, thereby answering Cao's question in the negative for $n\geq3$. This family of steady Ricci solitons interpolates between Cao's $U(n)$-invariant steady K\"ahler-Ricci soliton and the product of the cigar soliton and Cao's $U(n-1)$-invariant steady K\"ahler-Ricci soliton. This provides the K\"ahler analog of the Riemannian flying wings construction of Lai. In the process of the proof, we also demonstrate that the almost diameter rigidity of $\mathbb{P}^{n}$ endowed with the Fubini-Study metric does not hold even if the curvature operator is bounded below by $2$ on real $(1,\,1)$-forms., Comment: Appendix B added; more references added

Recently, synthetic spin-orbit coupling has been introduced into cold-atom systems for more flexible control of the Hamiltonian, which was further made time-varying through two-photon detuning to achieve dynamic control of the cold-atom state. While an intraband transition can be adiabatically obtained, a complete interband transition, rather than a superposition of different bands, obtained through fast sweeping is usually guaranteed by having the positions of the initial and final states be far away from any band gap in the quasimomentum space. Here, by introducing an additional non-Hermitian parameter through an atom-loss contrast together with two-photon detuning as two controllable external parameters, both intraband and complete interband transitions can be achieved independent of the positions of the initial and final states. In addition, a point-source diagram approach in the 2D external parameter space is developed to visualize and predict the locations of any nonadiabatic transitions. We study the ramifications of increased commitment power for information provision in an oligopolistic market with search frictions. Although prices are posted and, therefore, guide search, if firms cannot commit to information provision policies, there is no active search at equilibrium so consumers visit (and purchase from) at most one firm. If firms can guide search by both their prices and information policies, there exists a unique symmetric equilibrium exhibiting price dispersion and active search. Nevertheless, when the market is thin, consumers prefer the former case, which features intense price competition. Firms always prefer the latter.
