In-operando techniques enable real-time measurement of intricate physical properties at the micro- and nano-scale under external stimuli, allowing the study of a wide range of materials and functionalities. In nanomagnetism, in-operando techniques greatly benefit from precise three-dimensional (3D) magnetic field control, enabling access to complex magnetic states forming in systems where multiple energies are set to compete with each other. However, achieving such precision is challenging and uncommon, as specific applications impose constraints on the type and geometry of magnetic field sources, limiting their capabilities. Here, we introduce an approach that leverages machine learning algorithms to achieve precise 3D magnetic field control using a hexapole electromagnet that is composed of three independent, non-collinear dipole electromagnets. In our experimental setup, magnetic field sensors are placed at a distance from the sample position due to inherent constraints, leading to indirect field measurements that differ from the magnetic field experienced by the sample. We find that the existing relationship between the remote and sample frames of reference is non-linear, thus requiring a more complex calibration method. To address this, we employ a multi-layer perceptron neural network that processes multiple inputs from a dynamic magnetic field sequence, effectively capturing the time-dependent non-linear field response. The network achieves high calibration accuracy and demonstrates exceptional generalization to unseen magnetic field sequences. This study highlights the significant potential of machine learning in achieving high-precision control and calibration, crucial for in-operando experiments where direct measurement at the point of interest is not possible.

We propose a novel extension to the recently developed non-commutative Riemannian foliated branch-cut quantum gravity (BCQG). Based on an extended Faddeev-Jackiw symplectic deformation of the conventional Poisson algebra, we investigate non-commutativity effects on a symplectic topological manifold that provides a natural isomorphic setting composed by a triad of canonically conjugate scalar complex fields which comprise quantum complementary dualities. Based on a complementary analytically continued Friedmann-type equation, combined with a quantum approach based on the Ho\v{r}awa-Lifshitz quantum gravity, we describe the dynamic evolution of the universe's wave function, unfolding unprecedented predictions for the cosmic evolution and inflation. The non-commutative foliated quantum gravity approach offers a new perspective on explaining the accelerated cosmic expansion of the universe, strongly suggesting that non-commutative algebra induces the late accelerated growth of both the universe's wave function and the corresponding scale factor, along with their quantum counterparts. In contrast to the conventional inflationary model, where inflation requires a remarkably fine-tuned set of initial conditions in a patch of the universe, non-commutative foliated quantum gravity, analytically continued to the complex plane, captures short and long scales of spacetime, leading to an evolutionary cosmic dynamic through a topological reconfiguration of the primordial cosmic matter and energy content. This result introduces new speculative framework elements regarding the reconfiguration of matter and energy due to an underlying non-commutative spatio-temporal structure as a driver of spacetime cosmic acceleration.

The determination of the $DD^{*}$ scattering amplitude from lattice QCD is complicated by long-range interactions. In particular, the L\"uscher method is no longer applicable in the kinematical region close to the left-hand cut. We tackle this problem by adopting plane-wave and effective-field-theoretic methods, which also address partial wave mixing. In addition, we incorporate a diquark-antidiquark interpolator in the operator basis (along with the relevant scattering operators) in order to achieve a better resolution of the energy spectrum. Results show that inclusion of it already has some impact at physical charm quark mass, although it is more significant for larger heavy quark masses, in line with expectations., Comment: 9 pages. A new model to follow the complete evolution of a drop in Leidenfrost state is presented in this work. The main ingredients of the phenomenon were considered, including: 1) the shape and weight of a sessile drop, according to its size, compared to the capillary length, using the Young-Laplace equation; 2) the evaporation at the entire surface of the drop, due to the heat transfer across the vapor film, to the proximitiy of a hot plate and to the diffusion in air; 3) the velocity, pressure and temperature fields at the vapor film, between the drop and the hot plate, which are recovered by means of a Hankel transform method, being valid for any size of drops and any thickness of vapor films (below the vapor film stability threshold); 4) an estimation of the thermo-capillary Marangoni convection flow, without simulating numerically the flow within the drop. The aforementioned features were addressed and calculated, in order to include their effect within a single non-linear ODE, describing the temporal evolution of the size of the drop, through the Bond number. Three dimensionless parameters, relating the thermophysical properties of the drop fluid and the surrounding air, control the development of the phenomenon. All those properties were calculated according to the ideal gas approximation and to widely used empirical correlations, without any fitting parameter. The model predictions were compared against experimental results, using different organic and inorganic compounds, for which a good agreement has been found, when no bounce or rotation of the drop spontaneously occurs., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

Experimentally, the doubly charm tetraquark channel $cc\bar q\bar q$ with $q\!=\!u,d$ features an exotic hadron, $T_{cc}$, with isospin $I\!=\!0$ near the $DD^*$ threshold, while no peak was observed for $I\!=\!1$. We present a lattice QCD study of this channel with $I\!=\!1$, $J^P\!=\!1^+$ and $m_\pi\simeq 280~$MeV. Finite-volume energies calculated across five charm quark masses consistently indicate a repulsive interaction in this channel. These energies are used to compute the $DD^*$ scattering amplitude using both the standard L\"uscher method and the recently proposed effective-field-theory-based approach in the plane-wave basis, which incorporates the long-range interactions and the left-hand cut. Both analyses reaffirm the repulsive interaction resulting in a scattering amplitude that does not feature any poles in the energy region near the $DD^*$ threshold, in line with LHCb results. We identify that the Wick contraction resembling $t$-channel isovector-vector meson exchanges between $D$ and $D^*$ plays a key role in distinguishing between the $I=0$ and $I=1$ channels, leading to repulsion in the $I=1$ and attraction in the $I=0$ channel., Comment: 14 pages and 11 figures

Variable viscosity arises in many flow scenarios, often imposing numerical challenges. Yet, discretisation methods designed specifically for non-constant viscosity are few, and their analysis is even scarcer. In finite element methods for incompressible flows, the most popular approach to allow equal-order velocity-pressure interpolation are residual-based stabilisations. For low-order elements, however, the viscous part of that residual cannot be approximated, often compromising accuracy. Assuming slightly more regularity on the viscosity field, we can construct stabilisation methods that fully approximate the residual, regardless of the polynomial order of the finite element spaces. This work analyses two variants of this fully consistent approach, with the generalised Stokes system as a model problem. We prove unique solvability and derive expressions for the stabilisation parameter, generalising some classical results for constant viscosity. Numerical results illustrate how our method completely eliminates the spurious pressure boundary layers typically induced by low-order PSPG-like stabilisations.

An (artificial cardiac) pacemaker is an implantable electronic device that sends electrical impulses to the heart to regulate the heartbeat. As the number of pacemaker users continues to rise, so does the demand for features with additional sensors, adaptability, and improved battery performance. Reinforcement learning (RL) has recently been proposed as a performant algorithm for creative design space exploration, adaptation, and statistical verification of cardiac pacemakers. The design of correct reward functions, expressed as a reward machine, is a key programming activity in this process. In 2007, Boston Scientific published a detailed description of their pacemaker specifications. This document has since formed the basis for several formal characterizations of pacemaker specifications using real-time automata and logic. However, because these translations are done manually, they are challenging to verify. Moreover, capturing requirements in automata or logic is notoriously difficult. We posit that it is significantly easier for domain experts, such as electrophysiologists, to observe and identify abnormalities in electrocardiograms that correspond to patient-pacemaker interactions. Therefore, we explore the possibility of learning correctness specifications from such labeled demonstrations in the form of a reward machine and training an RL agent to synthesize a cardiac pacemaker based on the resulting reward machine. We leverage advances in machine learning to extract signals from labeled demonstrations as reward machines using recurrent neural networks and transformer architectures. These reward machines are then used to design a simple pacemaker with RL. Interplanetary shocks are fundamental constituents of the heliosphere, where they form as a result of solar activity. We use previously unavailable measurements of interplanetary shocks in the inner heliosphere provided by Solar Orbiter, and present a survey of the first 100 shocks observed in situ at different heliocentric distances during the rising phase of solar cycle 25. The fundamental shock parameters (shock normals, shock normal angles, shock speeds, compression ratios, Mach numbers) have been estimated and studied as a function of heliocentric distance, revealing a rich scenario of configurations. Comparison with large surveys of shocks at 1~au show that shocks in the quasi-parallel regime and with high speed are more commonly observed in the inner heliosphere. The wave environment of the shocks has also been addressed, with about 50\% of the events exhibiting clear shock-induced upstream fluctuations. We characterize energetic particle responses to the passage of IP shocks at different energies, often revealing complex features arising from the interaction between IP shocks and pre-existing fluctuations, including solar wind structures being processed upon shock crossing. Finally, we give details and guidance on the access use of the present survey, available on the EU-project ``solar energetic particle analysis platform for the inner heliosphere'' (SERPENTINE) website. The algorithm used to identify shocks in large datasets, now publicly available, is also described.

We introduce the Cuntz-Thomsen picture of $\mathcal{C}$-equivariant Kasparov theory, denoted $\mathrm{KK}^\mathcal{C}$, for a unitary tensor category $\mathcal{C}$ with countably many isomorphism classes of simple objects. We use this description of $\mathrm{KK}^\mathcal{C}$ to prove the stable uniqueness theorem in this setting.

To analyze the flow of information online, experts often rely on platform-provided data from social media companies, which typically attribute all resharing actions to an original poster. This obscures the true dynamics of how information spreads online, as users can be exposed to content in various ways. While most researchers analyze data as it is provided by the platform and overlook this issue, some attempt to infer the structure of these information cascades. However, the absence of ground truth about actual diffusion cascades makes verifying the efficacy of these efforts impossible. This study investigates the implications of the common practice of ignoring reconstruction all together. Two case studies involving data from Twitter and Bluesky reveal that reconstructing cascades significantly alters the identification of influential users, therefore affecting downstream analyses in general. We also propose a novel reconstruction approach that allows us to evaluate the effects of different assumptions made during the cascade inference procedure. Analysis of the diffusion of over 40,000 true and false news stories on Twitter reveals that the assumptions made during the reconstruction procedure drastically distort both microscopic and macroscopic properties of cascade networks. This work highlights the challenges of studying information spreading processes on complex networks and has significant implications for the broader study of digital platforms.

Trust and interpretability are crucial for the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in scientific research, but current models often operate as black boxes offering limited transparency and justifications for their outputs. We introduce AiSciVision, a framework that specializes Large Multimodal Models (LMMs) into interactive research partners and classification models for image classification tasks in niche scientific domains. Our framework uses two key components: (1) Visual Retrieval-Augmented Generation (VisRAG) and (2) domain-specific tools utilized in an agentic workflow. To classify a target image, AiSciVision first retrieves the most similar positive and negative labeled images as context for the LMM. Then the LMM agent actively selects and applies tools to manipulate and inspect the target image over multiple rounds, refining its analysis before making a final prediction. These VisRAG and tooling components are designed to mirror the processes of domain experts, as humans often compare new data to similar examples and use specialized tools to manipulate and inspect images before arriving at a conclusion. Each inference produces both a prediction and a natural language transcript detailing the reasoning and tool usage that led to the prediction. We evaluate AiSciVision on three real-world scientific image classification datasets: detecting the presence of aquaculture ponds, diseased eelgrass, and solar panels. Across these datasets, our method outperforms fully supervised models in low and full-labeled data settings. AiSciVision is actively deployed in real-world use, specifically for aquaculture research, through a dedicated web application that displays and allows the expert users to converse with the transcripts. This work represents a crucial step toward AI systems that are both interpretable and effective, advancing their use in scientific research and scientific discovery.

In this study, we employ the combined charged particle measurements from Integrated Science Investigation of the Sun (\ISOIS) onboard the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) and Energetic Particle Detector (EPD) onboard the Solar Orbiter (SolO) to study the composition variation of the solar energetic particle (SEP) event occurring on May 16, 2023. During the event, SolO and PSP were located at a similar radial distance of ~0.7 au and were separated by $\sim$60$^\circ$ in longitude. The footpoints of both PSP and SolO were west of the flare region but the former was much closer (18$^\circ$ vs 80$^\circ$). Such a distribution of observers is ideal for studying the longitudinal dependence of the ion composition with the minimum transport effects of particles along the radial direction. We focus on H, He, O, and Fe measured by both spacecraft in sunward and anti-sunward directions. Their spectra are in a double power-law shape, which is fitted best by the Band function. Notably, the event was Fe-rich at PSP, where the mean Fe/O ratio at energies of 0.1 - 10 Mev/nuc was 0.48, higher than the average Fe/O ratio in previous large SEP events. In contrast, the mean Fe/O ratio at SolO over the same energy range was considerable lower at 0.08. The Fe/O ratio between 0.5 and 10 MeV/nuc at both spacecraft is nearly constant. Although the He/H ratio shows energy dependence, decreasing with increasing energy, the He/H ratio at PSP is still about twice as high as that at SolO. Such a strong longitudinal dependence of element abundances and the Fe-rich component in the PSP data could be attributed to the direct flare contribution. Moreover, the temporal profiles indicate that differences in the Fe/O and He/H ratios between PSP and SolO persisted throughout the entire event rather than only at the start., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

Pre-trained language models (PLMs) are trained on large amounts of data, which helps capture world knowledge alongside linguistic competence. Due to this, they are extensively used for ultra-fine entity typing tasks, where they provide the entity knowledge held in its parameter space. Given that PLMs learn from co-occurrence patterns, they likely contain more knowledge or less knowledge about entities depending on their how frequent they are in the pre-training data. In this work, we probe PLMs to elicit encoded entity probabilities and demonstrate that they highly correlate with their frequency in large-scale internet data. Then, we demonstrate that entity-typing approaches that rely on PLMs struggle with entities at the long tail on the distribution. Our findings suggests that we need to go beyond PLMs to produce solutions that perform well for rare, new or infrequent entities.

In recent years, nanosatellites have revolutionized the space sector due to their significant economic and time-saving advantages. As a result, they have fostered the testing of advanced instruments intended for larger space science missions. The case of MELISA is presented in this work. MELISA is a magnetic measurement instrument which aims at demonstrating the in-orbit performance of AMR sensors featuring dedicated noise reduction techniques at sub-millihertz frequencies. Such low frequency ranges are relevant for future space-borne gravitational wave detectors, where the local magnetic environment of the satellite might yield a significant contribution to the overall noise budget of the observatory. The demanding magnetic noise levels required for this bandwidth, down to 0.1 mHz, make measurements arduous. To explore sensing solutions within the H2020 European Commission Programme with the involvement of ESA, the functional performance of MELISA-III will be validated in-orbit. During operations, there is the possibility to measure the low-frequency magnetic contribution stemming from orbiting the Earth's magnetic field, impeding the characterization of the intrinsic performance of the sensor. With the objective of minimizing excess noise during the in-flight operations, the present research aims to simulate the environmental magnetic conditions in LEO to identify and subtract undesired contributions to the measurements. The in-orbit long-term magnetic fluctuations are replicated using a Helmholtz coil system. A fluxgate magnetometer allows the correlation of the generated field with the payload measurements, leading to the subsequent subtraction. Proving the effect of this approach will facilitate the noise characterization of magnetic sensors in LEO, paving the way for the in-orbit validation of MELISA-III for use in magnetically demanding missions with long integration times.

For the incompressible Navier--Stokes system with variable density and viscosity, we propose and analyse an IMEX framework treating the convective and diffusive terms semi-implicitly. This extends to variable density and second order in time some methods previously analysed for variable viscosity and constant density. We present three new schemes, both monolithic and fractional-step. All of them share the methodological novelty that the viscous term is treated in an implicit-explicit (IMEX) fashion, which allows decoupling the velocity components. Unconditional temporal stability is proved for all three variants. Furthermore, the system to solve at each time step is linear, thus avoiding the costly solution of nonlinear problems even if the viscosity follows a non-Newtonian rheological law. Our presentation is restricted to the semi-discrete case, only considering the time discretisation. In this way, the results herein can be applied to any spatial discretisation. We validate our theory through numerical experiments considering finite element methods in space. We investigate the stability of weak symmetry-protected topological phases (SPTs) in the presence of short-range interactions, focusing on the tenfold way classification. Using Atiyah's Real $\mathit{KR}$-theory and Anderson-dualized bordism, we classify free and interacting weak phases across all Altland-Zirnbauer symmetry classes in low dimensions. Extending the free-to-interacting map of Freed-Hopkins, we mathematically compute how the behavior of free weak SPTs changes when interactions are introduced as well as predict intrinsically-interacting weak phases in certain classes. Our mathematical techniques involve T-duality and the James splitting of the torus. Our results provide a mathematical framework for understanding the persistence of weak SPTs under interactions, with potential implications for experimental and theoretical studies of these phases., Comment: 48 pages. We present a study of two-body decay widths of heavy baryons into another heavy baryon and a light pseudoscalar meson in the framework of the non-relativistic quark model in combination with the elementary emission model for the strong couplings. The present study includes the decays of 1S- and 1P-wave baryons with one, two or three heavy quarks, either charm (c) or bottom (b). The relative partial widths are given by the appropriate flavor SU(3) isoscalar factors. The flavor, spin and orbital contributions are discussed explicitly as well as selection rules for forbidden decays. The total widths are compared with the available experimental data as well as with other theoretical studies. The calculated widths of singly-heavy baryons are found to be in reasonable agreement with the observed widths. The decay widths of doubly-heavy baryons are suppressed with respect to those of the singly-heavy baryons by the ratios of the quark masses appearing in the orbital contributions., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures, 8 tables, submitted to Physical Review D

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of internet access across various aspects of life, from remote work and online education to healthcare services and social connections. As we transition to a post-pandemic era, a pressing need arises to update our understanding of the multifaceted nature of internet access. This study is one of the first attempts to do so. Using survey data from New Zealand adult internet users (n=960), it compares internet connection types, frequency of internet use at home, social media use, and concerns about online risk between people with and without disabilities. Results show people with disabilities have restricted fibre access and higher wireless broadband (a much slower connection type). People with disabilities use social media platforms less and are more concerned about certain online risks. The findings highlight persistent disparities in internet access for people with disabilities in the post-pandemic era. From a communications perspective, a frame defines the packaging of the language used in such a way as to encourage certain interpretations and to discourage others. For example, a news article can frame immigration as either a boost or a drain on the economy, and thus communicate very different interpretations of the same phenomenon. In this work, we argue that to explain framing devices we have to look at the way narratives are constructed. As a first step in this direction, we propose a framework that extracts events and their relations to other events, and groups them into high-level narratives that help explain frames in news articles. In public opinion studies, the relationships between opinions on different topics are likely to shift based on the characteristics of the respondents. Thus, understanding the complexities of public opinion requires methods that can account for the heterogeneity in responses across different groups. Multiple graphs are used to study how external factors-such as time spent online or generational differences-shape the joint dependence relationships between opinions on various topics. Specifically, we propose a class of multiple Ising models where a set of graphs across different groups are able to capture these variations and to model the heterogeneity induced in a set of binary variables by external factors. The proposed Bayesian methodology is based on a Markov Random Field prior for the multiple graph setting. Such prior enables the borrowing of strength across the different groups to encourage common edges when supported by the data. Sparse inducing spike-and-slab priors are employed on the parameters that measure graph similarities to learn which subgroups have a shared graph structure. Two Bayesian approaches are developed for the inference of multiple Ising models with a special focus on model selection: (i) a Fully Bayesian method for low-dimensional graphs based on conjugate priors specified with respect to the exact likelihood, and (ii) an Approximate Bayesian method based on a quasi-likelihood approach for high-dimensional graphs where the normalization constant required in the exact method is computationally intractable. These methods are employed for the analysis of data from two public opinion studies in US. The obtained results display a good trade-off between identifying significant edges (both shared and group-specific) and having sparse networks, all while quantifying the uncertainty of the graph structure and the graphs' similarity.

On 2022 March 10, a coronal mass ejection (CME) erupted from the Sun, resulting in Solar Orbiter observations at 0.45 au of both dispersive solar energetic particles arriving prior to the interplanetary CME (ICME) and locally accelerated particles near the ICME-associated shock structure as it passed the spacecraft on 2022 March 11. This shock was later detected on 2022 March 14 by the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE), which was radially aligned with Solar Orbiter, at 1 au. Ion composition data from both spacecraft -- via the Solar Orbiter Energetic Particle Detector/ Suprathermal Ion Spectrograph (EPD/SIS) and the Ultra Low Energy Isotope Spectrometer (ULEIS) on ACE -- allows for in-depth analysis of the radial evolution of species-dependent ICME shock-associated acceleration processes for this event. We present a study of the ion spectra observed at 0.45 and 1 au during both the gradual solar energetic particle (SEP) and energetic storm particle (ESP) phases of the event. We find that the shapes of the spectra seen at each spacecraft have significant differences that were likely caused by varying shock geometry: Solar Orbiter spectra tend to lack spectral breaks, and the higher energy portions of the ACE spectra have comparable average flux to the Solar Orbiter spectra. Through an analysis of rigidity effects on the spectral breaks observed by ACE, we conclude that the 1 au observations were largely influenced by a suprathermal pool of $\mathrm{He}^{+}$ ions that were enhanced due to propagation along a stream interaction region (SIR) that was interacting with the ICME at times of observation., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, submitted to A&A

Multi-fidelity Bayesian Optimization (MFBO) is a promising framework to speed up materials and molecular discovery as sources of information of different accuracies are at hand at increasing cost. Despite its potential use in chemical tasks, there is a lack of systematic evaluation of the many parameters playing a role in MFBO. In this work, we provide guidelines and recommendations to decide when to use MFBO in experimental settings. We investigate MFBO methods applied to molecules and materials problems. First, we test two different families of acquisition functions in two synthetic problems and study the effect of the informativeness and cost of the approximate function. We use our implementation and guidelines to benchmark three real discovery problems and compare them against their single-fidelity counterparts. Our results may help guide future efforts to implement MFBO as a routine tool in the chemical sciences.

Estimating a soft robot's pose and applied forces, also called proprioception, is crucial for safe interaction of the robot with its environment. However, most solutions for soft robot proprioception use dedicated sensors, particularly for external forces, which introduce design trade-offs, rigidity, and risk of failure. This work presents an approach for pose estimation and contact detection for soft robots actuated by shape memory alloy (SMA) artificial muscles, using no dedicated force sensors. Our framework uses the unique material properties of SMAs to self-sense their internal stress, via offboard measurements of their electrical resistance and in-situ temperature readings, in an existing fully-soft limb design. We demonstrate that a simple polynomial regression model on these measurements is sufficient to predict the robot's pose, under no-contact conditions. Then, we show that if an additional measurement of the true pose is available (e.g. from an already-in-place bending sensor), it is possible to predict a binary contact/no-contact using multiple combinations of self-sensing signals. Our hardware tests verify our hypothesis via a contact detection test with a human operator. This proof-of-concept validates that self-sensing signals in soft SMA-actuated soft robots can be used for proprioception and contact detection, and suggests a direction for integrating proprioception into soft robots without design compromises. Context. On 2022 January 20, the Energetic Particle Detector (EPD) on board Solar Orbiter measured a solar energetic particle (SEP) event showing unusual first arriving particles from the anti-Sun direction. Near-Earth spacecraft separated 17{\deg} in longitude to the west from Solar Orbiter measured classic antisunward-directed fluxes. STEREO-A and MAVEN, separated 18{\deg} to the east and 143{\deg} to the west from Solar Orbiter respectively, also observed the event, suggesting that particles spread over at least 160{\deg} in the heliosphere. Results. Solar Orbiter was embedded in a MC erupting on 16 January from the same active region as the one related to the SEP event on 20 January. The SEP event is related to a M5.5 flare and a fast CME-driven shock of 1433 km/s, which injected particles within and outside the MC. The hard SEP spectra, the presence of a Type II radio burst, and the co-temporal Type III radio bursts being observed from 80 MHz that seems to emanate from the Type II, points to the shock as the relevant accelerator of the particles. Conclusions. The detailed analysis of the SEP event strongly suggest that the energetic particles are injected mainly by a CME-driven shock into and outside of a previous MC present in the heliosphere at the time of the particle onset. The sunward propagating SEPs measured by Solar Orbiter are produced by the injection of particles along the longer (western) leg of the MC still connected to the Sun at the time of the release of the particles. The determined electron propagation path length inside the MC is around 30% longer than the estimated length of the loop leg of the MC itself (based on the graduated cylindrical shell model) consistent with a low number of field line rotations., Comment: 23 pages, 19 figures

Federated learning is a new approach to distributed machine learning that offers potential advantages such as reducing communication requirements and distributing the costs of training algorithms. Therefore, it could hold great promise in swarm robotics applications. However, federated learning usually requires a centralized server for the aggregation of the models. In this paper, we present a proof-of-concept implementation of federated learning in a robot swarm that does not compromise decentralization. To do so, we use blockchain technology to enable our robot swarm to securely synchronize a shared model that is the aggregation of the individual models without relying on a central server. We then show that introducing a single malfunctioning robot can, however, heavily disrupt the training process. To prevent such situations, we devise protection mechanisms that are implemented through secure and tamper-proof blockchain smart contracts. Differentially private stochastic gradient descent (DP-SGD) has been instrumental in privately training deep learning models by providing a framework to control and track the privacy loss incurred during training. At the core of this computation lies a subsampling method that uses a privacy amplification lemma to enhance the privacy guarantees provided by the additive noise. Fixed size subsampling is appealing for its constant memory usage, unlike the variable sized minibatches in Poisson subsampling. It is also of interest in addressing class imbalance and federated learning. However, the current computable guarantees for fixed-size subsampling are not tight and do not consider both add/remove and replace-one adjacency relationships. We present a new and holistic R{\'e}nyi differential privacy (RDP) accountant for DP-SGD with fixed-size subsampling without replacement (FSwoR) and with replacement (FSwR). For FSwoR we consider both add/remove and replace-one adjacency. Our FSwoR results improves on the best current computable bound by a factor of $4$. We also show for the first time that the widely-used Poisson subsampling and FSwoR with replace-one adjacency have the same privacy to leading order in the sampling probability. Accordingly, our work suggests that FSwoR is often preferable to Poisson subsampling due to constant memory usage. Our FSwR accountant includes explicit non-asymptotic upper and lower bounds and, to the authors' knowledge, is the first such analysis of fixed-size RDP with replacement for DP-SGD. We analytically and empirically compare fixed size and Poisson subsampling, and show that DP-SGD gradients in a fixed-size subsampling regime exhibit lower variance in practice in addition to memory usage benefits., Comment: 39 pages, 10 figures

NLP-assisted solutions have gained considerable traction to support qualitative data analysis. However, there does not exist a unified evaluation framework that can account for the many different settings in which qualitative researchers may employ them. In this paper, we take a first step in this direction by proposing an evaluation framework to study the way in which different tools may result in different outcomes depending on the collaboration strategy employed. Specifically, we study the impact of synchronous vs. asynchronous collaboration using two different NLP-assisted qualitative research tools and present a comprehensive analysis of significant differences in the consistency, cohesiveness, and correctness of their outputs.

The Sun drives a supersonic wind which inflates a giant plasma bubble in our very local interstellar neighborhood, the heliosphere. It is bathed in an extremely variable background of energetic ions and electrons which originate from a number of sources. Solar energetic particles (SEPs) are accelerated in the vicinity of the Sun, whereas shocks driven by solar disturbances are observed to accelerate energetic storm particles (ESPs). Moreover, a dilute population with a distinct composition forms the anomalous cosmic rays (ACRs) which are of a mixed interstellar-heliospheric origin. Particles are also accelerated at planetary bow shocks. In the period between 2009 and 2015, several very high-energy (VHE $> 100$ GeV) gamma-ray flaring events from the BL Lac object PKS 1424+240 were observed by the Cerenkov telescopes VERITAS and MAGIC. It had uncertain redshift ($z$) and using spectroscopical measurement, Paiano et al. (2017) found it to be $z=0.604$. Using four different extragalactic background light (EBL) models and the photohadronic model, nine independently observed VHE gamma-ray spectra of PKS 1424+240 are analyzed and a global $\chi^2$ fit is performed on all observations to estimate the best-fit value for the redshift for each EBL model. Confidence levels (CL) intervals for the redshift are also estimated using all the EBL models. This method is tested by comparing our analysis with the observed value. It is shown that the photohadronic scenario provides an excellent description of all the observed spectra. It is found that the EBL model of Dom\'inguez et al. (2011) is the one that provides the most restrictive limits on the redshift of PKS 1424+240, but in our analysis, $z=0.604$ lies within the $3\sigma$ CL interval of the EBL model of Saldana-Lopez et al. The design of a serious game is presented that served as an instrument to motivate and aid to Physics education using active and ludic learning, specifically the topic of free fall of objects, with diverse educational purposes, first to apply a set of teaching strategies focused on promoting supervised active learning and live programming and second, providing a serious game to illustrate the notions of kinematics and simulate the dynamics of rigid bodies using a video game engine. Thanks to the use of the game engine and a holistic methodology, it was possible to help Physics students implement said serious game during a semester of an introductory Physics course., Comment: Preprint in Spanish language

The onset of Industry 4.0 is rapidly transforming the manufacturing world through the integration of cloud computing, machine learning (ML), artificial intelligence (AI), and universal network connectivity, resulting in performance optimization and increase productivity. Digital Twins (DT) are one such transformational technology that leverages software systems to replicate physical process behavior, representing the physical process in a digital environment. This paper aims to explore the use of photogrammetry (which is the process of reconstructing physical objects into virtual 3D models using photographs) and 3D Scanning techniques to create accurate visual representation of the 'Physical Process', to interact with the ML/AI based behavior models. To achieve this, we have used a readily available consumer device, the iPhone 15 Pro, which features stereo vision capabilities, to capture the depth of an Industry 4.0 system. By processing these images using 3D scanning tools, we created a raw 3D model for 3D modeling and rendering software for the creation of a DT model. The paper highlights the reliability of this method by measuring the error rate in between the ground truth (measurements done manually using a tape measure) and the final 3D model created using this method. The overall mean error is 4.97\% and the overall standard deviation error is 5.54\% between the ground truth measurements and their photogrammetry counterparts. The results from this work indicate that photogrammetry using consumer-grade devices can be an efficient and cost-efficient approach to creating DTs for smart manufacturing, while the approaches flexibility allows for iterative improvements of the models over time.

This technical report describes the implementation of Toychain: a simple, lightweight blockchain implemented in Python, designed for ease of deployment and practicality in robotics research. It can be integrated with various software and simulation tools used in robotics (we have integrated it with ARGoS, Gazebo, and ROS2), and also be deployed on real robots capable of Wi-Fi communications. The Toychain package supports the deployment of smart contracts written in Python (computer programs that can be executed by and synchronized across a distributed network). The nodes in the blockchain can execute smart contract functions by broadcasting transactions, which update the state of the blockchain upon agreement by all other nodes. The conditions for this agreement are established by a consensus protocol. The Toychain package allows for custom implementations of the consensus protocol, which can be useful for research or meeting specific application requirements. Currently, Proof-of-Work and Proof-of-Authority are implemented.

Brownian motion in one or more dimensions is extensively used as a stochastic process to model natural and engineering signals, as well as financial data. Most works dealing with multidimensional Brownian motion assume that each component is independent. In this article, we investigate a model of correlated Brownian motion in $\mathbb{R}^2$, where the individual components are not necessarily independent. We explore various statistical properties of the process under consideration, going beyond the conventional analysis of the second moment. Our particular focus lies on investigating the distribution of turning angles. This distribution reveals particularly interesting characteristics for processes with dependent components that are relevant to applications in diverse physical systems. Theoretical considerations are supported by numerical simulations and analysis of two real-world datasets: the financial data of the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the Standard and Poor's 500, and trajectories of polystyrene beads in water. We present a study of the vacuum transition probabilities taking into account quantum corrections. We first introduce a general method that expand previous works employing the Lorentzian formalism of the Wheeler-De Witt equation by considering higher order terms in the semiclassical expansion. The method presented is applicable in principle to any model in the superspace and up to any desired order in the quantum correction terms. Then, we apply this method to obtain analytical solutions for the probabilities up to second quantum corrections for homogeneous isotropic and anisotropic universes. We use the Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker with positive and zero curvature for the isotropic case and the Bianchi III and Kantwowski-Sachs metrics for the anisotropic case. Interpreting the results as distribution probabilities of creating universes by vacuum decay with a given size, we found that the general behaviour is that considering up to the second quantum correction leads to an avoidance of the initial singularity. However, we show that this result can only be achieved for the isotropic universe. Furthermore, we also study the effect of anisotropy on the transition probabilities., Comment: 36 pages, 4 figures

The off-shell pion electromagnetic form factors are explored with corresponding off-shell light-front wave functions modeled by constituent quark and anti-quark. We apply the Mandelstam approach for the microscopic computation of the form factors relating the model parameters with the pion decay constant and charge radius. Analyzing the existing data on the cross-sections for the Sullivan process, H(e,e',pi)n, we extract the off-shell pion form factor using the relation derived from the generalized Ward-Takahashi identity for the pion electromagnetic current. They are compared with our previous results from exactly solvable manifestly covariant model of a (3+1)-dimensional fermion field theory. We find that the adopted constituent quark model reproduces the extracted off-shell form factor $F_1(Q^2,t)$ from the experimental data within a few percent difference and matches well with our previous theoretical simulation which exhibits a variation of about 10\% for the extracted off-shell pion form factor $g(Q^2,t)$. This study presents the results of a search for rotation signature in 250 Gaia DR3 Ultra-Cool Dwarfs (UCDs) with TESS light curves. We identified 71 targets with unambiguous periodicities, of which 61 present rotation signatures and a single source behavior, with periods between 0.133 and 5.81 days. Five UCDs show double-dip features, namely variations with two periods, one approximately double or half the other. The remaining ten UCDs with unambiguous variability present a likely non-single behavior. We also found 20 UCDs showing complex behavior in their light curves, with noticeable fluctuations and irregular structure, with a few exhibiting apparent changes in their temporal structure. The remaining 159 targets show noisy light curves corresponding to low-amplitude signals, whose temporal variation cannot be easily identified. The distribution of the UCDs with rotation signature in the CMD diagram points to a lack of rotating objects within about $11.5

PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is ESA's M3 mission designed to detect and characterise extrasolar planets and perform asteroseismic monitoring of a large number of stars. PLATO will detect small planets (down to <2 R_(Earth)) around bright stars (<11 mag), including terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. With the complement of radial velocity observations from the ground, planets will be characterised for their radius, mass, and age with high accuracy (5 %, 10 %, 10 % for an Earth-Sun combination respectively). PLATO will provide us with a large-scale catalogue of well-characterised small planets up to intermediate orbital periods, relevant for a meaningful comparison to planet formation theories and to better understand planet evolution. It will make possible comparative exoplanetology to place our Solar System planets in a broader context. In parallel, PLATO will study (host) stars using asteroseismology, allowing us to determine the stellar properties with high accuracy, substantially enhancing our knowledge of stellar structure and evolution. The payload instrument consists of 26 cameras with 12cm aperture each. For at least four years, the mission will perform high-precision photometric measurements. Here we review the science objectives, present PLATO's target samples and fields, provide an overview of expected core science performance as well as a description of the instrument and the mission profile at the beginning of the serial production of the flight cameras. PLATO is scheduled for a launch date end 2026. This overview therefore provides a summary of the mission to the community in preparation of the upcoming operational phases.

The use of e-learning systems has a long tradition, where students can study online helped by a system. In this context, the use of recommender systems is relatively new. In our research project, we investigated various ways to create a recommender system. They all aim at facilitating the learning and understanding of a student. We present a common concept of the learning path and its learning indicators and embed 5 different recommenders in this context.

This paper introduces Physics-Informed Deep Equilibrium Models (PIDEQs) for solving initial value problems (IVPs) of ordinary differential equations (ODEs). Leveraging recent advancements in deep equilibrium models (DEQs) and physics-informed neural networks (PINNs), PIDEQs combine the implicit output representation of DEQs with physics-informed training techniques. We validate PIDEQs using the Van der Pol oscillator as a benchmark problem, demonstrating their efficiency and effectiveness in solving IVPs. Our analysis includes key hyperparameter considerations for optimizing PIDEQ performance. By bridging deep learning and physics-based modeling, this work advances computational techniques for solving IVPs, with implications for scientific computing and engineering applications., Comment: Accepted at CASE 2024; Extended Sec. Supervised learning has gone beyond the expected risk minimization framework. Central to most of these developments is the introduction of more general aggregation functions for losses incurred by the learner. In this paper, we turn towards online learning under expert advice. Via easily justified assumptions we characterize a set of reasonable loss aggregation functions as quasi-sums. Based upon this insight, we suggest a variant of the Aggregating Algorithm tailored to these more general aggregation functions. This variant inherits most of the nice theoretical properties of the AA, such as recovery of Bayes' updating and a time-independent bound on quasi-sum regret. We introduce a data structure for counting pattern occurrences in texts compressed with any run-length context-free grammar. Our structure uses space proportional to the grammar size and counts the occurrences of a pattern of length $m$ in a text of length $n$ in time \(O(m\log^{2+\epsilon} n)\), for any constant \(\epsilon > 0\). This closes an open problem posed by Christiansen et al.~[ACM TALG 2020] and enhances our abilities for computation over compressed data; we give an example application.

Since the publication of the first scheduling paper in 1954, a huge number of works dealing with different types of single machine problems appeared. They addressed many heuristics and enumerative procedures, complexity results or structural properties of certain problems. Regarding surveys, often particular subjects like special objective functions are discussed, or more general scheduling problems were surveyed, where a substantial part is devoted to single machine problems. In this paper we present some results on polynomial algorithms, complexity and approximation issues, where the main focus is on results, which have been published during the last decades in papers, where at least one of the first two authors of this paper was involved. We hope that the reviewed results will stimulate further investigation in related research fields.

In the Bounded Multiple Traveling Salesman Problem (BMTSP), a tour for each salesman, that starts and ends at the depot and that respects the bounds on the number of cities that a feasible salesman tour should satisfy, is to be constructed. The objective is to minimize the total length of all tours. Already Euclidean traveling salesman problem is NP-hard. We propose a 3-Phase heuristic algorithm for the Euclidean BMTSP. We tested the algorithm for the 22 benchmark instances and 168 new problem instances that we created. We report 19 best known solutions for the 22 benchmark instances including the 12 largest ones. For the newly created instances, we compared the performance of our algorithm with that of an ILP-solver CPLEX, which was able to construct a feasible solution for 71% of the instances within the time limit of two hours imposed by us. For about 10% of the smallest new instances, CPLEX delivered slightly better solutions, where our algorithm took less than 180 seconds for the largest of these instances. For the remaining 61% of the instances solved by CPLEX, the solutions by our heuristic were, on average, about 21.5% better than those obtained by CPLEX.

Smith homomorphisms are maps between bordism groups that change both the dimension and the tangential structure. We give a completely general account of Smith homomorphisms, unifying the many examples in the literature. We provide three definitions of Smith homomorphisms, including as maps of Thom spectra, and show they are equivalent. Using this, we identify the cofiber of the spectrum-level Smith map and extend the Smith homomorphism to a long exact sequence of bordism groups, which is a powerful computation tool. We discuss several examples of this long exact sequence, relating them to known constructions such as Wood's and Wall's sequences. Furthermore, taking Anderson duals yields a long exact sequence of invertible field theories, which has a rich physical interpretation. Despite the success of fractional Brownian motion (fBm) in modeling systems that exhibit anomalous diffusion due to temporal correlations, recent experimental and theoretical studies highlight the necessity for a more comprehensive approach of a generalization that incorporates heterogeneities in either the tracers or the environment. This work presents a modification of Levy's representation of fBm for the case in which the generalized diffusion coefficient is a stochastic process. We derive analytical expressions for the autocovariance function and both ensemble- and time-averaged mean squared displacements. Bug fixing is a crucial task in software maintenance to hold user trust. Although various automated fault localization techniques exist, they often require specific conditions to be effective. For example, Spectrum-Based Fault Localization (SBFL) techniques need at least one failing test to identify bugs, which may not always be available. Bug reports, particularly those with stack traces, provide detailed information on system execution failures and are invaluable for developers. This study focuses on utilizing stack traces from crash reports as fault-triggering tests for SBFL. Our findings indicate that only 3.33% of bugs have fault-triggering tests, limiting traditional SBFL efficiency. However, 98.3% of bugfix intentions align directly with exceptions in stack traces, and 78.3% of buggy methods are reachable within an average of 0.34 method calls, proving stack traces as a reliable source for locating bugs. We introduce a new approach, SBEST, that integrates stack trace data with test coverage to enhance fault localization. Our approach shows a significant improvement, increasing Mean Average Precision (MAP) by 32.22% and Mean Reciprocal Rank (MRR) by 17.43% over traditional stack trace ranking methods.

When materials are patterned in three dimensions, there exist opportunities to tailor and create functionalities associated with an increase in complexity, the breaking of symmetries, and the introduction of curvature and non-trivial topologies. For superconducting nanostructures, the extension to the third dimension may trigger the emergence of new physical phenomena, as well as advances in technologies. Here, we harness three-dimensional (3D) nanopatterning to fabricate and control the emergent properties of a 3D superconducting nanostructure. Not only are we able to demonstrate the existence and motion of superconducting vortices in 3D but, with simulations, we show that the confinement leads to a well-defined bending of the vortices within the volume of the structure. Moreover, we experimentally observe a strong geometrical anisotropy of the critical field, through which we achieve the reconfigurable coexistence of superconducting and normal states in our 3D superconducting architecture, and the local definition of weak links. In this way, we uncover an intermediate regime of nanosuperconductivity, where the vortex state is truly three-dimensional and can be designed and manipulated by geometrical confinement. This insight into the influence of 3D geometries on superconducting properties offers a route to local reconfigurable control for future computing devices, sensors, and quantum technologies., Comment: 22 pages, 12 figures

Chiral magnetic textures are key for the development of modern spintronic devices. In multilayered thin films, these are typically stabilized via the interfacial intralayer Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). Additionally, it has been recently observed that DMI may also promote vector spin chirality along the third dimension, coupling spins in different magnetic layers via non-magnetic spacer layers, an effect referred to as interlayer DMI (IL-DMI). This interaction holds promise for 3D nanomagnetism, from the creation of 3D spin structures such as hopfions to new forms of magnetic functionality in the vertical direction via remote control of chiral spin states. Here, we investigate via magnetic X-ray scattering and imaging techniques the chiral nature of orthogonal magnetic states that form in a synthetic antiferromagnet with IL-DMI. We find that the vector spin chirality of the textures formed in an in-plane layer is determined by the net out-of-plane spin configuration of a neighboring layer, leading as a result to complex spin states across a metallic interface where the overall scalar spin chirality is preserved. This work thus uncovers a new flavor of chiral interlayer interactions, demonstrating new ways to control magnetic chirality in three dimensions.
