Abstract

We analyzed the 7.92$\times 10^{11}$ cosmic-ray-induced muon events collected by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory from May 13, 2011, when the fully constructed experiment started to take data, to May 12, 2023. This dataset provides an up-to-date cosmic-ray arrival direction distribution in the Southern Hemisphere with unprecedented statistical accuracy covering more than a full period length of a solar cycle. Improvements in Monte Carlo event simulation and better handling of year-to-year differences in data processing significantly reduce systematic uncertainties below the level of statistical fluctuations compared to the previously published results. We confirm the observation of a change in the angular structure of the cosmic-ray anisotropy between 10 TeV and 1 PeV, more specifically in the 100-300 TeV energy range.

2. Simulating the Arrival of Multiple Coronal Mass Ejections that Triggered the Gannon Superstorm on May 10, 2024

Abstract

The May 10, 2024 space weather event stands out as the most powerful storm recorded during the current solar cycle. This study employs a numerical framework utilizing a semi-empirical coronal model, along with HUXt (Heliospheric Upwind eXtrapolation with time-dependence) and cone-CME models for the inner heliosphere, to forecast solar wind velocity and the arrival of CMEs associated with this event. The simulations were also carried out using Space Weather Adaptive SimulaTion (SWASTi) and a drag-based model (DBM) for this complex event of multiple CMEs. Predicted arrival times and velocities from these models are compared with actual observations at the Sun-Earth L1 point. These simulations reveal that three coronal mass ejections (CMEs) reached Earth nearly simultaneously, resulting in the extreme space weather event, followed by the arrival of a few more eruptions. The simulations accurately predicted arrival times with a discrepancy of approximately 5 hours or less for these CMEs. Further, the ensemble study of DBM shows the sensitivity of the CME arrival time to the background solar wind speed and drag parameters. All three models have done fairly well in reproducing the arrival time closely to the actual observation of the CMEs responsible for the extreme geomagnetic storm of May 10, 2024. Abstract

The radio galaxy NGC 1275, located at the central region of Perseus cluster, is a well-known very high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray emitter. The Major Atmospheric Cherenkov Experiment Telescope has detected two distinct episodes of VHE (E > 80 GeV) gamma-ray emission from NGC 1275 during 2022 December and 2023 January. The second outburst, observed on 2023 January 10, was the more intense of the two, with flux reaching 58$\%$ of the Crab Nebula flux above 80 GeV. The differential energy spectrum measured between 80 GeV and 1.5 TeV can be described by a power law with a spectral index of $\Gamma = - 2.90 \pm 0.16_{stat}$ for both flaring events. The broadband spectral energy distribution derived from these flares, along with quasisimultaneous low-energy counterparts, suggests that the observed gamma-ray emission can be explained using a homogeneous single-zone synchrotron self-Compton model. The physical parameters derived from this model for both flaring states are similar. The intermediate state observed between two flaring episodes is explained by a lower Doppler factor or magnetic field, which subsequently returned to its previous value during the high-activity state observed on 2023 January 10., Comment: 7 Pages, 5 Figures, and 1 Table

4. Is Prior-Free Black-Box Non-Stationary Reinforcement Learning Feasible?

Abstract

We study the problem of Non-Stationary Reinforcement Learning (NS-RL) without prior knowledge about the system's non-stationarity. A state-of-the-art, black-box algorithm, known as MASTER, is considered, with a focus on identifying the conditions under which it can achieve its stated goals. Specifically, we prove that MASTER's non-stationarity detection mechanism is not triggered for practical choices of horizon, leading to performance akin to a random restarting algorithm. Moreover, we show that the regret bound for MASTER, while being order optimal, stays above the worst-case linear regret until unreasonably large values of the horizon. To validate these observations, MASTER is tested for the special case of piecewise stationary multi-armed bandits, along with methods that employ random restarting, and others that use quickest change detection to restart. A simple, order optimal random restarting algorithm, that has prior knowledge of the non-stationarity is proposed as a baseline. The behavior of the MASTER algorithm is validated in simulations, and it is shown that methods employing quickest change detection are more robust and consistently outperform MASTER and other random restarting approaches., Comment: Corrected minor typos in the proof of Theorem 2 on pages 25 and 26

5. Proactive Detection and Calibration of Seasonal Advertisements with Multimodal Large Language Models

Abstract

A myriad of factors affect large scale ads delivery systems and influence both user experience and revenue. One such factor is proactive detection and calibration of seasonal advertisements to help with increasing conversion and user satisfaction. In this paper, we present Proactive Detection and Calibration of Seasonal Advertisements (PDCaSA), a research problem that is of interest for the ads ranking and recommendation community, both in the industrial setting as well as in research. Our paper provides detailed guidelines from various angles of this problem tested in, and motivated by a large-scale industrial ads ranking system. We share our findings including the clear statement of the problem and its motivation rooted in real-world systems, evaluation metrics, and sheds lights to the existing challenges, lessons learned, and best practices of data annotation and machine learning modeling to tackle this problem. Lastly, we present a conclusive solution we took during this research exploration: to detect seasonality, we leveraged Multimodal LLMs (MLMs) which on our in-house benchmark achieved 0.97 top F1 score. Based on our findings, we envision MLMs as a teacher for knowledge distillation, a machine labeler, and a part of the ensembled and tiered seasonality detection system, which can empower ads ranking systems with enriched seasonal information.

6. High Probability Latency Sequential Change Detection over an Unknown Finite Horizon

Abstract

A finite horizon variant of the quickest change detection problem is studied, in which the goal is to minimize a delay threshold (latency), under constraints on the probability of false alarm and the probability that the latency is exceeded. In addition, the horizon is not known to the change detector. A variant of the cumulative sum (CuSum) test with a threshold that increasing logarithmically with time is proposed as a candidate solution to the problem. An information-theoretic lower bound on the minimum value of the latency under the constraints is then developed. This lower bound is used to establish certain asymptotic optimality properties of the proposed test in terms of the horizon and the false alarm probability. 7. Track-MDP: Reinforcement Learning for Target Tracking with Controlled Sensing

Abstract

State of the art methods for target tracking with sensor management (or controlled sensing) are model-based and are obtained through solutions to Partially Observable Markov Decision Process (POMDP) formulations. In this paper a Reinforcement Learning (RL) approach to the problem is explored for the setting where the motion model for the object/target to be tracked is unknown to the observer. It is assumed that the target dynamics are stationary in time, the state space and the observation space are discrete, and there is complete observability of the location of the target under certain (a priori unknown) sensor control actions. Then, a novel Markov Decision Process (MDP) rather than POMDP formulation is proposed for the tracking problem with controlled sensing, which is termed as Track-MDP. In contrast to the POMDP formulation, the Track-MDP formulation is amenable to an RL based solution. It is shown that the optimal policy for the Track-MDP formulation, which is approximated through RL, is guaranteed to track all significant target paths with certainty. The Track-MDP method is then compared with the optimal POMDP policy, and it is shown that the infinite horizon tracking reward of the optimal Track-MDP policy is the same as that of the optimal POMDP policy. In simulations it is demonstrated that Track-MDP based RL leads to a policy that can track the target with high accuracy.

Abstract

Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are prime candidate sources of the high-energy, astrophysical neutrinos detected by IceCube. This is demonstrated by the real-time multi-messenger detection of the blazar TXS 0506+056 and the recent evidence of neutrino emission from NGC 1068 from a separate time-averaged study. However, the production mechanism of the astrophysical neutrinos in AGN is not well established which can be resolved via correlation studies with photon observations. For neutrinos produced due to photohadronic interactions in AGN, in addition to a correlation of neutrinos with high-energy photons, there would also be a correlation of neutrinos with photons emitted at radio wavelengths. In this work, we perform an in-depth stacking study of the correlation between 15 GHz radio observations of AGN reported in the MOJAVE XV catalog, and ten years of neutrino data from IceCube. We also use a time-dependent approach which improves the statistical power of the stacking analysis. No significant correlation was found for both analyses and upper limits are reported. When compared to the IceCube diffuse flux, at 100 TeV and for a spectral index of 2.5, the upper limits derived are $\sim3\%$ and $\sim9\%$ for the time-averaged and time-dependent case, respectively., Comment: 14 Pages 7 Figures

Abstract

We present a search for an eV-scale sterile neutrino using 7.5 years of data from the IceCube DeepCore detector. The analysis uses a sample of 21,914 events with energies between 5 and 150 GeV to search for sterile neutrinos through atmospheric muon neutrino disappearance. Improvements in event selection and treatment of systematic uncertainties provide greater statistical power compared to previous DeepCore sterile neutrino searches. Our results are compatible with the absence of mixing between active and sterile neutrino states, and we place constraints on the mixing matrix elements $|U_{\mu 4}|^2 < 0.0534$ and $|U_{\tau 4}|^2 < 0.0574$ at 90% CL under the assumption that $\Delta m^2_{41}\geq 1\;\mathrm{eV^2}$. These null results add to the growing tension between anomalous appearance results and constraints from disappearance searches in the 3+1 sterile neutrino landscape., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures. Abstract

In this article, we define Dirichlet-type space $\mathcal{D}^{2}(\boldsymbol{\mu})$ over the bidisc $\mathbb D^2$ for any measure $\boldsymbol{\mu}\in\mathcal{P}\mathcal{M}_{+}(\mathbb T^2).$ We show that the set of polynomials is dense in $\mathcal{D}^{2}(\boldsymbol{\mu})$ and the pair $(M_{z_1}, M_{z_2})$ of multiplication operator by co-ordinate functions on $\mathcal{D}^{2}(\boldsymbol{\mu})$ is a pair of commuting $2$-isometries. Moreover, the pair $(M_{z_1}, M_{z_2})$ is a left-inverse commuting pair in the following sense: $L_{M_{z_i}} M_{z_j}=M_{z_j}L_{M_{z_i}}$ for $1\leqslant i\neq j\leqslant n,$ where $L_{M_{z_i}}$ is the left inverse of $M_{z_i}$ with $\ker L_{M_{z_i}} =\ker M_{z_i}^*$, $1\leqslant i \leqslant n$. Furthermore, it turns out that, for the class of left-inverse commuting tuple $\boldsymbol T=(T_1, \ldots, T_n)$ acting on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$, the joint wandering subspace property is equivalent to the individual wandering subspace property. As an application of this, the article shows that the class of left-inverse commuting pair with certain splitting property is modelled by the pair of multiplication by co-ordinate functions $(M_{z_1}, M_{z_2})$ on $\mathcal{D}^{2}(\boldsymbol{\mu})$ for some $\boldsymbol{\mu}\in\mathcal{P}\mathcal{M}_{+}(\mathbb T^2).$, Comment: The article has been significantly revised

Abstract

Experimental searches for vector-like quarks have until now only considered their decays into Standard Model particles. However, various new physics scenarios predict additional scalars, so that these vector-like quarks can decay to new channels. These new channels reduce the branching ratios into Standard Model final states, significantly affecting current mass bounds. In this article, we quantitatively assess the relevance and observability of single and pair production processes of vector-like quarks, followed by decays into both standard and exotic final states. We highlight the importance of large widths and the relative interaction strengths with Standard Model particles and new scalars. Then, we review the post-Moriond 2024 status of these models in light of available LHC data and discuss potential future strategies to enhance the scope of vector-like quark searches., Comment: 25 pages, 7 figures; v2: minor clarifications added

Abstract

The recent IceCube detection of TeV neutrino emission from the nearby active galaxy NGC 1068 suggests that active galactic nuclei (AGN) could make a sizable contribution to the diffuse flux of astrophysical neutrinos. The absence of TeV $\gamma$-rays from NGC 1068 indicates neutrino production in the vicinity of the supermassive black hole, where the high radiation density leads to $\gamma$-ray attenuation. Therefore, any potential neutrino emission from similar sources is not expected to correlate with high-energy $\gamma$-rays. Disk-corona models predict neutrino emission from Seyfert galaxies to correlate with keV X-rays, as they are tracers of coronal activity. Using through-going track events from the Northern Sky recorded by IceCube between 2011 and 2021, we report results from a search for individual and aggregated neutrino signals from 27 additional Seyfert galaxies that are contained in the BAT AGN Spectroscopic Survey (BASS). Besides the generic single power-law, we evaluate the spectra predicted by the disk-corona model. Assuming all sources to be intrinsically similar to NGC 1068, our findings constrain the collective neutrino emission from X-ray bright Seyfert galaxies in the Northern Hemisphere, but, at the same time, show excesses of neutrinos that could be associated with the objects NGC 4151 and CGCG 420-015. Abstract

Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are promising candidate sources of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos since they provide environments rich in matter and photon targets where cosmic ray interactions may lead to the production of gamma rays and neutrinos. We searched for high-energy neutrino emission from AGN using the $\textit{Swift}$-BAT Spectroscopic Survey (BASS) catalog of hard X-ray sources and 12 years of IceCube muon track data. First, upon performing a stacked search, no significant emission was found. Second, we searched for neutrinos from a list of 43 candidate sources and found an excess from the direction of two sources, Seyfert galaxies NGC 1068 and NGC 4151. We observed NGC 1068 at flux $\phi_{\nu_{\mu}+\bar{\nu}_{\mu}}$ = $4.02_{-1.52}^{+1.58} \times 10^{-11}$ TeV$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ normalized at 1 TeV, with power-law spectral index, $\gamma$ = 3.10$^{+0.26}_{-0.22}$, consistent with previous IceCube results. The observation of a neutrino excess from the direction of NGC 4151 is at a post-trial significance of 2.9$\sigma$. If interpreted as an astrophysical signal, the excess observed from NGC 4151 corresponds to a flux $\phi_{\nu_{\mu}+\bar{\nu}_{\mu}}$ = $1.51_{-0.81}^{+0.99} \times 10^{-11}$ TeV$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ normalized at 1 TeV and $\gamma$ = 2.83$^{+0.35}_{-0.28}$.

Abstract

We present the first three-parameter fit to a 3+1 sterile neutrino model using 7.634 years of data from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory on $\nu_\mu+\overline{\nu}_\mu$ charged-current interactions in the energy range 500--9976 GeV. Our analysis is sensitive to the mass-squared splitting between the heaviest and lightest mass state ($\Delta m_{41}^2$), the mixing matrix element connecting muon flavor to the fourth mass state ($|U_{\mu4}|^2$), and the element connecting tau flavor to the fourth mass state ($|U_{\tau4}|^2$). Predicted propagation effects in matter enhance the signature through a resonance as atmospheric neutrinos from the Northern Hemisphere traverse the Earth to the IceCube detector at the South Pole. The remaining sterile neutrino matrix elements are left fixed, with $|U_{e4}|^2= 0$ and $\delta_{14}=0$, as they have a negligible effect, and $\delta_{24}=\pi$ is set to give the most conservative limits. The result is consistent with the no-sterile neutrino hypothesis with a probability of 4.3%. Profiling the likelihood of each parameter yields the 90\% confidence levels: $ 2.4\,\mathrm{eV}^{2} < \Delta m_{41}^2 <9.6\,\mathrm{eV}^{2} $ , $0.0081 < |U_{\mu4}|^2 < 0.10$ , and $|U_{\tau4}|^2< 0.035$, which narrows the allowed parameter-space for $|U_{\tau4}|^2$. Abstract

This study evaluates the effectiveness of child-robot interactions with the HaKsh-E social robot in India, examining both individual and group interaction settings. The research centers on game-based interactions designed to teach hand hygiene to children aged 7-11. Utilizing video analysis, rubric assessments, and post-study questionnaires, the study gathered data from 36 participants. Findings indicate that children in both settings developed positive perceptions of the robot in terms of the robot's trustworthiness, closeness, and social support. The significant difference in the interaction level scores presented in the study suggests that group settings foster higher levels of interaction, potentially due to peer influence and collaborative dynamics. While both settings showed significant improvements in learning outcomes, the individual setting had more pronounced learning gains. This suggests that personal interactions with the robot might lead to deeper or more effective learning experiences. Abstract

We provide supporting details for the search for a 3+1 sterile neutrino using data collected over eleven years at the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. The analysis uses atmospheric muon-flavored neutrinos from 0.5 to 100\, TeV that traverse the Earth to reach the IceCube detector, and finds a best-fit point at $\sin^2(2\theta_{24}) = 0.16$ and $\Delta m^{2}_{41} = 3.5$ eV$^2$ with a goodness-of-fit p-value of 12\% and consistency with the null hypothesis of no oscillations to sterile neutrinos with a p-value of 3.1\%. Several improvements were made over past analyses, which are reviewed in this article, including upgrades to the reconstruction and the study of sources of systematic uncertainty. We provide details of the fit quality and discuss stability tests that split the data for separate samples, comparing results. Abstract

This Letter presents the result of a 3+1 sterile neutrino search using 10.7 years of IceCube data. We analyze atmospheric muon neutrinos that traverse the Earth with energies ranging from 0.5 to 100 TeV, incorporating significant improvements in modeling neutrino flux and detector response compared to earlier studies. Notably, for the first time, we categorize data into starting and through-going events, distinguishing neutrino interactions with vertices inside or outside the instrumented volume, to improve energy resolution. The best-fit point for a 3+1 model is found to be at $\sin^2(2\theta_{24}) = 0.16$ and $\Delta m^{2}_{41} = 3.5$ eV$^2$, which agrees with previous iterations of this study. The result is consistent with the null hypothesis of no sterile neutrinos with a p-value of 3.1\%., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures. Abstract

Galactic PeVatrons are sources that can accelerate cosmic rays to PeV energies. The high-energy cosmic rays are expected to interact with the surrounding ambient material or radiation, resulting in the production of gamma rays and neutrinos. To optimize for the detection of such associated production of gamma rays and neutrinos for a given source morphology and spectrum, a multi-messenger analysis that combines gamma rays and neutrinos is required. In this study, we use the Multi-Mission Maximum Likelihood framework (3ML) with IceCube Maximum Likelihood Analysis software (i3mla) and HAWC Accelerated Likelihood (HAL) to search for a correlation between 22 known gamma-ray sources from the third HAWC gamma-ray catalog and 14 years of IceCube track-like data. No significant neutrino emission from the direction of the HAWC sources was found. We report the best-fit gamma-ray model and 90% CL neutrino flux limit from the 22 sources. From the neutrino flux limit, we conclude that the gamma-ray emission from five of the sources can not be produced purely from hadronic interactions. We report the limit for the fraction of gamma rays produced by hadronic interactions for these five sources.

Abstract

In the problem of quickest change detection (QCD), a change occurs at some unknown time in the distribution of a sequence of independent observations. This work studies a QCD problem where the change is either a bad change, which we aim to detect, or a confusing change, which is not of our interest. Our objective is to detect a bad change as quickly as possible while avoiding raising a false alarm for pre-change or a confusing change. We identify a specific set of pre-change, bad change, and confusing change distributions that pose challenges beyond the capabilities of standard Cumulative Sum (CuSum) procedures. Proposing novel CuSum-based detection procedures, S-CuSum and J-CuSum, leveraging two CuSum statistics, we offer solutions applicable across all kinds of pre-change, bad change, and confusing change distributions. For both S-CuSum and J-CuSum, we provide analytical performance guarantees and validate them by numerical results. Furthermore, both procedures are computationally efficient as they only require simple recursive updates.

Abstract

More than 10,000 photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) with a diameter of 80 mm will be installed in multi-PMT Digital Optical Modules (mDOMs) of the IceCube Upgrade. These have been tested and pre-calibrated at two sites. A throughput of more than 1000 PMTs per week with both sites was achieved with a modular design of the testing facilities and highly automated testing procedures. The testing facilities can easily be adapted to other PMTs, such that they can, e.g., be re-used for testing the PMTs for IceCube-Gen2. Single photoelectron response, high voltage dependence, time resolution, prepulse, late pulse, afterpulse probabilities, and dark rates were measured for each PMT. Abstract

The studies of the nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of the transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) coupled with photoactive particles, plasmonic nanocavities, waveguides, and metamaterials remain in their infancy. This study investigates the third-order NLO properties of MoS$_2$ nanosheets in the presence of a semiconductor photoactive medium. Our extensive studies and the obtained results reveal the counteractive coupling effect of bare and passivated quantum dots on the MoS$_2$ nanosheet, as made evident by the analysis of the NLO processes. The enhanced NLO properties of MoS$_2$ nanosheets functionalized with CdSe and CdSe-V2O5 quantum dots are helpful for applications as saturable absorbers in laser applications and the emission of coherent short-wavelength radiation. The multiphoton-excitation resonance energy transfer mechanism exploiting remote dipole dipole coupling, and ultrafast charge transfer pathways emerges as another plausible way to alter the NLO properties in TMDs., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Nonreciprocal nonequilibrium process are attracting growing interest in sociology, animal behaviour, chemistry, and nanotechnology, and may have played a role in the origin of life. It is less widely recognized, however, that in open systems light can induce nonreciprocal predator-prey like forces between nanoparticles. Such forces provide access to the continuous time crystal state of matter, which has been demonstrated in a plasmonic metamaterial array of nanowires wherein light triggers a spontaneous mobilization transition to the robust oscillatory state, breaking time translation symmetry. Here, we report on the first experimental study of the transient dynamics of light-induced mobilization and demobilization in a time crystal. By analysing time resolved phase trajectories of the system of nanowires, we show that the mobilization transition is accompanied by breaking of continuous time translation symmetry and ergodicity, and a decrease in the entropy of motion. This insight into the transient dynamics of a nonreciprocity-driven time crystal is relevant to optical timetronics, an information and communications technology paradigm relying on the unique functionalities of time crystals, and applications of the interacting nanowire oscillator platform to modelling a wide range of nonreciprocal processes from many-body dynamics to the early stages of matter-to-life transitions., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

23. Quickest Change Detection for Multiple Data Streams Using the James-Stein Estimator

Abstract

The problem of quickest change detection is studied in the context of detecting an arbitrary unknown mean-shift in multiple independent Gaussian data streams. The James-Stein estimator is used in constructing detection schemes that exhibit strong detection performance both asymptotically and non-asymptotically. First, a James-Stein-based extension of the recently developed windowed CuSum test is introduced. Our results indicate that the proposed scheme constitutes a uniform improvement over its typical maximum likelihood variant. That is, the proposed James-Stein version achieves a smaller detection delay simultaneously for all possible post-change parameter values and every false alarm rate constraint, as long as the number of parallel data streams is greater than three. Additionally, an alternative detection procedure that utilizes the James-Stein estimator is shown to have asymptotic detection delay properties that compare favorably to existing tests. The second-order term of the asymptotic average detection delay is reduced in a predefined low-dimensional subspace of the parameter space, while second-order asymptotic minimaxity is preserved. The results are verified in simulations, where the proposed schemes are shown to achieve smaller detection delays compared to existing alternatives, especially when the number of data streams is large., Comment: 27 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

The Major Atmospheric Cherenkov Experiment (MACE) is a large size (21m) Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope (IACT) installed at an altitude of 4270m above sea level at Hanle, Ladakh in northern India. Here we report the detection of Very High Energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission from Crab Nebula above 80 GeV. We analysed ~15 hours of data collected at low zenith angle between November 2022 and February 2023. The energy spectrum is well described by a log-parabola function with a flux of ~(3.46 +/- 0.26stat) x 10-10 TeV-1 cm-2 s-1, at 400 GeV with spectral index of 2.09 +/- 0.06stat and a curvature parameter of 0.08 +/- 0.07stat. The gamma-rays are detected in an energy range spanning from 80 GeV to ~5 TeV. The energy resolution improves from ~34% at an analysis energy threshold of 80 GeV to ~21% above 1 TeV. The daily light curve and the spectral energy distribution obtained for the Crab Nebula is in agreement with previous measurements, considering statistical and systematic uncertainties., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astroparticle Physics

Abstract

We study the problem of distributed and rate-adaptive feature compression for linear regression. A set of distributed sensors collect disjoint features of regressor data. A fusion center is assumed to contain a pretrained linear regression model, trained on a dataset of the entire uncompressed data. At inference time, the sensors compress their observations and send them to the fusion center through communication-constrained channels, whose rates can change with time. Our goal is to design a feature compression {scheme} that can adapt to the varying communication constraints, while maximizing the inference performance at the fusion center. We first obtain the form of optimal quantizers assuming knowledge of underlying regressor data distribution. Under a practically reasonable approximation, we then propose a distributed compression scheme which works by quantizing a one-dimensional projection of the sensor data. We also propose a simple adaptive scheme for handling changes in communication constraints. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the distributed adaptive compression scheme through simulated experiments.

Abstract

The loss of soil organic carbon (SOC) poses a severe danger to agricultural sustainability around the World. This review examines various farming practices and their impact on soil organic carbon storage. After a careful review of the literature, most of the research indicated that different farming practices, such as organic farming, cover crops, conservation tillage, and agroforestry, play vital roles in increasing the SOC content of the soil sustainably. Root exudation from cover crops increases microbial activity and helps break down complex organic compounds into organic carbon. Conservation tillage enhances the soil structure and maintains carbon storage without disturbing the soil. Agroforestry systems boost organic carbon input and fasten nutrient cycling because the trees and crops have symbiotic relationships. Intercropping and crop rotations have a role in changing the composition of plant residues and promoting carbon storage. There were many understanding on the complex interactions between soil organic carbon dynamics and agricultural practices. Based on the study, the paper reveals, the role of different agricultural practices like Carbon storage through cover crops, crop rotation, mulching Conservation tillage, conventional tillage, zero tillage and organic amendments in organic carbon storage in the soil for maximum crop yield to improve the economic condition of the cultivators.

Abstract

This paper introduces iRoCo (intuitive Robot Control) - a framework for ubiquitous human-robot collaboration using a single smartwatch and smartphone. By integrating probabilistic differentiable filters, iRoCo optimizes a combination of precise robot control and unrestricted user movement from ubiquitous devices. We demonstrate and evaluate the effectiveness of iRoCo in practical teleoperation and drone piloting applications. Comparative analysis shows no significant difference between task performance with iRoCo and gold-standard control systems in teleoperation tasks. Additionally, iRoCo users complete drone piloting tasks 32\% faster than with a traditional remote control and report less frustration in a subjective load index questionnaire. Our findings strongly suggest that iRoCo is a promising new approach for intuitive robot control through smartwatches and smartphones from anywhere, at any time. Abstract

We report on a measurement of astrophysical tau neutrinos with 9.7 years of IceCube data. Using convolutional neural networks trained on images derived from simulated events, seven candidate $\nu_\tau$ events were found with visible energies ranging from roughly 20 TeV to 1 PeV and a median expected parent $\nu_\tau$ energy of about 200 TeV. Considering backgrounds from astrophysical and atmospheric neutrinos, and muons from $\pi^\pm/K^\pm$ decays in atmospheric air showers, we obtain a total estimated background of about 0.5 events, dominated by non-$\nu_\tau$ astrophysical neutrinos. Thus, we rule out the absence of astrophysical $\nu_\tau$ at the $5\sigma$ level. Abstract

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory relies on an array of photomultiplier tubes to detect Cherenkov light produced by charged particles in the South Pole ice. IceCube data analyses depend on an in-depth characterization of the glacial ice, and on novel approaches in event reconstruction that utilize fast approximations of photoelectron yields. Here, a more accurate model is derived for event reconstruction that better captures our current knowledge of ice optical properties. When evaluated on a Monte Carlo simulation set, the median angular resolution for in-ice particle showers improves by over a factor of three compared to a reconstruction based on a simplified model of the ice. The most substantial improvement is obtained when including effects of birefringence due to the polycrystalline structure of the ice. Abstract

A measurement of the diffuse astrophysical neutrino spectrum is presented using IceCube data collected from 2011-2022 (10.3 years). We developed novel detection techniques to search for events with a contained vertex and exiting track induced by muon neutrinos undergoing a charged-current interaction. Searching for these starting track events allows us to not only more effectively reject atmospheric muons but also atmospheric neutrino backgrounds in the southern sky, opening a new window to the sub-100 TeV astrophysical neutrino sky. The event selection is constructed using a dynamic starting track veto and machine learning algorithms. We use this data to measure the astrophysical diffuse flux as a single power law flux (SPL) with a best-fit spectral index of $\gamma = 2.58 ^{+0.10}_{-0.09}$ and per-flavor normalization of $\phi^{\mathrm{Astro}}_{\mathrm{per-flavor}} = 1.68 ^{+0.19}_{-0.22} \times 10^{-18} \times \mathrm{GeV}^{-1} \mathrm{cm}^{-2} \mathrm{s}^{-1} \mathrm{sr}^{-1}$ (at 100 TeV). Abstract

Orbital angular momentum (OAM)-carrying beams have gained significant attention in recent years due to their unique properties and potential to improve spectral efficiency and data transmission rates in optical communication systems. However, fully exploiting the capabilities of the entire OAM mode spectrum remains challenging. The emergence of AI-driven OAM mode identification has revolutionized the demultiplexing process within optical communication channels. OAM beams with different orders are orthogonal, allowing each beam to serve as a distinct signal carrier. Combining multiple OAM beams can effectively enhance channel capacity. In this paper, we adopt speckle-learned demultiplexing to demultiplex OAM beams via its speckle pattern that is more resilient to alignment and noise. However, the use of only non-intensity degenerate beams limits the utilization of multiplexing resources. This approach aims to fully leverage the full spectrum of OAM beams by introducing astigmatism in far-field speckle patterns using a tilted spherical convex lens. We then conduct a comprehensive analysis of two innovative information encoding techniques: OAM shift keying and OAM multiplexing. We successfully demonstrate an optical communication link encoded using both OAM shift keying and OAM multiplexing, followed by accurate decoding via speckle-learned demultiplexing.

Abstract

Name that Neutrino is a citizen science project where volunteers aid in classification of events for the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, an immense particle detector at the geographic South Pole. From March 2023 to September 2023, volunteers did classifications of videos produced from simulated data of both neutrino signal and background interactions. Name that Neutrino obtained more than 128,000 classifications by over 1,800 registered volunteers that were compared to results obtained by a deep neural network machine-learning algorithm. Possible improvements for both Name that Neutrino and the deep neural network are discussed.

Abstract

The structure of the basal ganglia is remarkably similar across a number of species (often described in terms of direct, indirect and hyperdirect pathways) and is deeply involved in decision making and action selection. In this article, we are interested in exploring the role of structure when solving a decision task while avoiding to make any strong assumption regarding the actual structure. To do so, we exploit the echo state network paradigm that allows to solve complex task based on a random architecture. Considering a temporal decision task, the question is whether a specific structure allows for better performance and if so, whether this structure shares some similarity with the basal ganglia. Our results highlight the advantage of having a slow (direct) and a fast (hyperdirect) pathway that allows to deal with late information during a decision making task.

35. Verifying Relational Explanations: A Probabilistic Approach

Abstract

Explanations on relational data are hard to verify since the explanation structures are more complex (e.g. graphs). To verify interpretable explanations (e.g. explanations of predictions made in images, text, etc.), typically human subjects are used since it does not necessarily require a lot of expertise. However, to verify the quality of a relational explanation requires expertise and is hard to scale-up. GNNExplainer is arguably one of the most popular explanation methods for Graph Neural Networks. In this paper, we develop an approach where we assess the uncertainty in explanations generated by GNNExplainer. Specifically, we ask the explainer to generate explanations for several counterfactual examples. We generate these examples as symmetric approximations of the relational structure in the original data. From these explanations, we learn a factor graph model to quantify uncertainty in an explanation. 36. Scalable and Equitable Math Problem Solving Strategy Prediction in Big Educational Data

Abstract

Understanding a student's problem-solving strategy can have a significant impact on effective math learning using Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs) and Adaptive Instructional Systems (AISs). For instance, the ITS/AIS can better personalize itself to correct specific misconceptions that are indicated by incorrect strategies, specific problems can be designed to improve strategies and frustration can be minimized by adapting to a student's natural way of thinking rather than trying to fit a standard strategy for all. While it may be possible for human experts to identify strategies manually in classroom settings with sufficient student interaction, it is not possible to scale this up to big data. Therefore, we leverage advances in Machine Learning and AI methods to perform scalable strategy prediction that is also fair to students at all skill levels. Specifically, we develop an embedding called MVec where we learn a representation based on the mastery of students. We then cluster these embeddings with a non-parametric clustering method where we progressively learn clusters such that we group together instances that have approximately symmetrical strategies. The strategy prediction model is trained on instances sampled from these clusters. This ensures that we train the model over diverse strategies and also that strategies from a particular group do not bias the DNN model, thus allowing it to optimize its parameters over all groups. Using real world large-scale student interaction datasets from MATHia, we implement our approach using transformers and Node2Vec for learning the mastery embeddings and LSTMs for predicting strategies. We show that our approach can scale up to achieve high accuracy by training on a small sample of a large dataset and also has predictive equality, i.e., it can predict strategies equally well for learners at diverse skill levels. Abstract

The standard approach to verify representations learned by Deep Neural Networks is to use them in specific tasks such as classification or regression, and measure their performance based on accuracy in such tasks. However, in many cases, we would want to verify more complex properties of a learned representation. To do this, we propose a framework based on a probabilistic first-order language, namely, Hybrid Markov Logic Networks (HMLNs) where we specify properties over embeddings mixed with symbolic domain knowledge. We present an approach to learn parameters for the properties within this framework. Further, we develop a verification method to test embeddings in this framework by encoding this task as a Mixed Integer Linear Program for which we can leverage existing state-of-the-art solvers. Abstract

We present the results of a search for 10--1,000 GeV neutrinos from 2,268 gamma-ray bursts over 8 years of IceCube-DeepCore data. This work probes burst physics below the photosphere where electromagnetic radiation cannot escape. Neutrinos of tens of GeVs are predicted in sub-photospheric collision of free streaming neutrons with bulk-jet protons. In a first analysis, we searched for the most significant neutrino-GRB coincidence using six overlapping time windows centered on the prompt phase of each GRB. In a second analysis, we conducted a search for a group of GRBs, each individually too weak to be detectable, but potentially significant when combined. No evidence of neutrino emission is found for either analysis. The most significant neutrino coincidence is for Fermi-GBM GRB bn 140807500, with a p-value of 0.097 corrected for all trials. The binomial test used to search for a group of GRBs had a p-value of 0.65 after all trial corrections. The binomial test found a group consisting only of GRB bn 140807500 and no additional GRBs. The neutrino limits of this work complement those obtained by IceCube at TeV to PeV energies. We compare our findings for the large set of GRBs as well as GRB 221009A to the sub-photospheric neutron-proton collision model and find that GRB 221009A provides the most constraining limit on baryon loading. For a jet Lorentz factor of 300 (800), the baryon loading on GRB 221009A is lower than 3.85 (2.13) at a 90% confidence level.

Abstract

We present the results of a time-dependent search for neutrino flares in data collected by IceCube between May 2011 and 2021. This data set contains cascade-like events originating from charged-current electron neutrino and tau neutrino interactions and all-flavor neutral-current interactions. IceCube's previous all-sky searches for neutrino flares used data sets consisting of track-like events originating from charged-current muon neutrino interactions. The cascade data sets are statistically independent of the track data sets and provide a new opportunity to observe the transient all-sky landscape. This search uses the spatial, temporal, and energy information of the cascade-like events to conduct searches for the most statistically significant neutrino flares in the northern and southern skies. No statistically significant time-dependent neutrino emission was observed. For the most statistically significant location in the northern sky, $p_\mathrm{global} =$ 0.71, and in the southern sky, $p_\mathrm{global} =$ 0.51. These results are compatible with the background hypothesis. Assuming an E$^{-2.53}$ spectrum from the diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux as measured with cascades, these results are used to calculate upper limits at the 90\% confidence level on neutrino flares of varying duration and constrain the contribution of these flares to the diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux. These constraints are independent of a specified class of astrophysical objects and show that multiple unresolved transient sources may contribute to the diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux., Comment: Submitted to The Astrophysical Journal

40. Heavy vector-like quarks decaying to exotic scalars: a case study with triplets

Abstract

We investigate the pair production of a vector-like quark triplet with hypercharge 5/3 decaying into top quark and a complex scalar triplet with hypercharge 1 at the LHC. This novel scenario, featuring particles with exotic charges - two quarks with charge 8/3 and 5/3 and a scalar with charge 2 - serves as a unique window to models based on the framework of partial compositeness, where these particles naturally emerge as bound states around the TeV scale. Leveraging on the LHC data we establish exclusion limits on the masses of the vector-like quark and the scalar triplet. Subsequently, we design an analysis strategy aimed at improving sensitivity in the region which is still allowed. Our analysis focuses on two specific regions in the parameter space: the first entails a large mass gap between the vector-like quarks and the scalars, so that the vector-like quarks can decay into the scalars; the second involves a small mass gap, such that this decay is forbidden. To simplify the parameter space, both vector-like quarks and scalars are assumed to be degenerate or almost degenerate within the triplets, such that chain decays between fermions and scalars are suppressed. As a result, we found that final states characterized by a same-sign lepton pair, multiple jets, and high net transverse momentum (i.e. effective mass) will play a pivotal role to unveil this model and, more in general, models characterised by multiple vector-like quarks around the same mass scale during the high luminosity LHC phase., Comment: 22 pages, 10 figures, 8 tables. Abstract

With the increasingly widespread adoption of AI in healthcare, maintaining the accuracy and reliability of AI models in clinical practice has become crucial. In this context, we introduce novel methods for monitoring the performance of radiology AI classification models in practice, addressing the challenges of obtaining real-time ground truth for performance monitoring. We propose two metrics - predictive divergence and temporal stability - to be used for preemptive alerts of AI performance changes. Predictive divergence, measured using Kullback-Leibler and Jensen-Shannon divergences, evaluates model accuracy by comparing predictions with those of two supplementary models. Temporal stability is assessed through a comparison of current predictions against historical moving averages, identifying potential model decay or data drift. This approach was retrospectively validated using chest X-ray data from a single-center imaging clinic, demonstrating its effectiveness in maintaining AI model reliability. 42. Machine learning meets Singular Optics: Speckle-based Structured light demultiplexing

Abstract

In this paper, the advancements in structured light beams recognition using speckle-based convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been presented. Speckle fields, generated by the interference of multiple wavefronts diffracted and scattered through a diffuser, project a random distribution. The generated random distribution of phase and intensity correlates to the structured light beam of the corresponding speckle field. This unique distribution of phase and intensity offers an additional dimension for recognizing the encoded information in structured light. The CNNs are well-suited for harnessing this unique ability to recognize the speckle field by learning hidden patterns within data. One notable advantage of speckle-based recognition is their ability to identify structured light beams from a small portion of the speckle field, even in high-noise environments. The diffractive nature of the speckle field enables off-axis recognition, showcasing its capability in information broadcasting employing structured light beams. This is a significant departure from direct-mode detection-based models to alignment-free speckle-based detection models, which are no longer constrained by the directionality of laser beams.

Abstract

Automatically generated reports from medical images promise to improve the workflow of radiologists. Existing methods consider an image-to-report modeling task by directly generating a fully-fledged report from an image. However, this conflates the content of the report (e.g., findings and their attributes) with its style (e.g., format and choice of words), which can lead to clinically inaccurate reports. To address this, we propose a two-step approach for radiology report generation. First, we extract the content from an image; then, we verbalize the extracted content into a report that matches the style of a specific radiologist. For this, we leverage RadGraph -- a graph representation of reports -- together with large language models (LLMs). In our quantitative evaluations, we find that our approach leads to beneficial performance. Our human evaluation with clinical raters highlights that the AI-generated reports are indistinguishably tailored to the style of individual radiologist despite leveraging only a few examples as context., Comment: Accepted to Findings of EMNLP 2023

44. Quickest Change Detection with Controlled Sensing

Abstract

In the problem of quickest change detection, a change occurs at some unknown time in the distribution of a sequence of random vectors that are monitored in real time, and the goal is to detect this change as quickly as possible subject to a certain false alarm constraint. In this work we consider this problem in the presence of parametric uncertainty in the post-change regime and controlled sensing. That is, the post-change distribution contains an unknown parameter, and the distribution of each observation, before and after the change, is affected by a control action. In this context, in addition to a stopping rule that determines the time at which it is declared that the change has occurred, one also needs to determine a sequential control policy, which chooses the control action at each time based on the already collected observations. We formulate this problem mathematically using Lorden's minimax criterion, and assuming that there are finitely many possible actions and post-change parameter values. We then propose a specific procedure for this problem that employs an adaptive CuSum statistic in which (i) the estimate of the parameter is based on a fixed number of the more recent observations, and (ii) each action is selected to maximize the Kullback-Leibler divergence of the next observation based on the current parameter estimate, apart from a small number of exploration times. We show that this procedure, which we call the Windowed Chernoff-CuSum (WCC), is first-order asymptotically optimal under Lorden's minimax criterion, for every possible possible value of the unknown post-change parameter, as the mean time to false alarm goes to infinity. We also provide simulation results to illustrate the performance of the WCC procedure.

45. Continuous Space-Time Crystal State Driven by Nonreciprocal Optical Forces

Abstract

Continuous time crystals (CTCs) - media with broken continuous time translation symmetry - are an eagerly sought state of matter that spontaneously transition from a time-independent state to one of periodic motion in response to a small perturbation. The state has been realized recently in an array of nanowires decorated with plasmonic metamolecules illuminated with light. Here we show that this as-yet-unexplained CTC state can be understood as arising from a nonreciprocal phase transition induced by nonconservative radiation pressure forces among plasmonic metamolecules: above a certain intensity threshold, light drives the inhomogeneously broadened array of thermally-driven noisy nanowire oscillators to a synchronized coherent space-time crystal state and ergodicity of the system is broken. At the onset of synchronization, this mechanism does not require nonlinearity in the oscillators but depends instead on nonreciprocal forces. 46. Visual In-Context Learning for Few-Shot Eczema Segmentation

Abstract

Automated diagnosis of eczema from digital camera images is crucial for developing applications that allow patients to self-monitor their recovery. An important component of this is the segmentation of eczema region from such images. Current methods for eczema segmentation rely on deep neural networks such as convolutional (CNN)-based U-Net or transformer-based Swin U-Net. While effective, these methods require high volume of annotated data, which can be difficult to obtain. Here, we investigate the capabilities of visual in-context learning that can perform few-shot eczema segmentation with just a handful of examples and without any need for retraining models. Specifically, we propose a strategy for applying in-context learning for eczema segmentation with a generalist vision model called SegGPT. When benchmarked on a dataset of annotated eczema images, we show that SegGPT with just 2 representative example images from the training dataset performs better (mIoU: 36.69) than a CNN U-Net trained on 428 images (mIoU: 32.60). We also discover that using more number of examples for SegGPT may in fact be harmful to its performance. Our result highlights the importance of visual in-context learning in developing faster and better solutions to skin imaging tasks. Our result also paves the way for developing inclusive solutions that can cater to minorities in the demographics who are typically heavily under-represented in the training data.

47. Distributionally Robust Quickest Change Detection using Wasserstein Uncertainty Sets

Abstract

The problem of quickest detection of a change in the distribution of a sequence of independent observations is considered. It is assumed that the pre-change distribution is known (accurately estimated), while the only information about the post-change distribution is through a (small) set of labeled data. This post-change data is used in a data-driven minimax robust framework, where an uncertainty set for the post-change distribution is constructed using the Wasserstein distance from the empirical distribution of the data. The robust change detection problem is studied in an asymptotic setting where the mean time to false alarm goes to infinity, for which the least favorable post-change distribution within the uncertainty set is the one that minimizes the Kullback-Leibler divergence between the post- and the pre-change distributions. It is shown that the density corresponding to the least favorable distribution is an exponentially tilted version of the pre-change density and can be calculated efficiently. A Cumulative Sum (CuSum) test based on the least favorable distribution, which is referred to as the distributionally robust (DR) CuSum test, is then shown to be asymptotically robust. The results are extended to the case where the post-change uncertainty set is a finite union of multiple Wasserstein uncertainty sets, corresponding to multiple post-change scenarios, each with its own labeled data. The proposed method is validated using synthetic and real data examples.

Abstract

IceCube alert events are neutrinos with a moderate-to-high probability of having astrophysical origin. In this study, we analyze 11 years of IceCube data and investigate 122 alert events and a selection of high-energy tracks detected between 2009 and the end of 2021. This high-energy event selection (alert events + high-energy tracks) has an average probability of $\geq 0.5$ to be of astrophysical origin. We search for additional continuous and transient neutrino emission within the high-energy events' error regions. We find no evidence for significant continuous neutrino emission from any of the alert event directions. The only locally significant neutrino emission is the transient emission associated with the blazar TXS~0506+056, with a local significance of $ 3 \sigma$, which confirms previous IceCube studies. When correcting for 122 test positions, the global p-value is $0.156$ and is compatible with the background hypothesis. We constrain the total continuous flux emitted from all 122 test positions at 100~TeV to be below $1.2 \times 10^{-15}$~(TeV cm$^2$ s)$^{-1}$ at 90% confidence assuming an $E^{-2}$ spectrum. This corresponds to 4.5% of IceCube's astrophysical diffuse flux. Abstract

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the geographic South Pole is, with its surface and in-ice detectors, used for both neutrino and cosmic-ray physics. The surface array, named IceTop, consists of ice-Cherenkov tanks grouped in 81 pairs spanning a 1 km$^2$ area. An enhancement of the surface array, composed of elevated scintillation panels and radio antennas, was designed over the last years in order to increase the scientific capabilities of IceTop. The surface radio antennas, in particular, will be able to reconstruct $X_\mathrm{max}$, an observable widely used to determine the mass composition of cosmic rays. A complete prototype station of this enhanced array was deployed in the Austral summer of 2019/20 at the South Pole. This station comprises three antennas and eight scintillation panels, arranged in a three-arms star shape. The nominal frequency band of the radio antennas is 70 to 350 MHz. In this work, we use a state-of-the-art reconstruction method in which observed events are compared directly to CoREAS simulations to obtain an estimation of the air-shower variables, in particular, energy and $X_\mathrm{max}$. Abstract

Neutrino oscillations at the highest energies and longest baselines provide a natural quantum interferometer with which to study the structure of spacetime and test the fundamental principles of quantum mechanics. If the metric of spacetime has a quantum mechanical description, there is a generic expectation that its fluctuations at the Planck scale would introduce non-unitary effects that are inconsistent with the standard unitary time evolution of quantum mechanics. Neutrinos interacting with such fluctuations would lose their quantum coherence, deviating from the expected oscillatory flavor composition at long distances and high energies. The IceCube South Pole Neutrino Observatory is a billion-ton neutrino telescope situated in the deep ice of the Antarctic glacier. Atmospheric neutrinos detected by IceCube in the energy range 0.5--10 TeV have been used to test for coherence loss in neutrino propagation. No evidence of anomalous neutrino decoherence was observed, leading to the strongest experimental limits on neutrino-quantum gravity interactions to date, significantly surpassing expectations from natural Planck-scale models. The resulting constraint on the effective decoherence strength parameter within an energy-independent decoherence model is $\Gamma_0\leq 1.17\times10^{-15}$~eV, improving upon past limits by a factor of 30. For decoherence effects scaling as E$^2$, limits are advanced by more than six orders of magnitude beyond past measurements.
