Search

Clinicians face several significant barriers to search and synthesize accurate, succinct, updated, and trustworthy medical information from several literature sources during the practice of medicine and patient care. In this talk, we will be presenting our research behind the development of a Focused Clinical Search Service, powered by a Healthcare Knowledge Graph, to interpret the query intent behind clinical search queries and retrieve relevant medical snippets from a diverse corpus of medical literature., Comment: Under Review as a Podium Talk at the AMIA Informatics Summit 2021

We show that each perfect matching in a bipartite graph $G$ intersects at least half of the perfect matchings in $G$. This result has equivalent formulations in terms of the permanent of the adjacency matrix of a graph, and in terms of derangements and permutations on graphs. We give several related results and open questions.

The hadronic leading-order (hlo) contribution to the lepton anomalous magnetic moments $a_l^\mathrm{hlo}$ of the Standard Model leptons still accounts for the dominant source of the uncertainty of the Standard Model estimates. We present the results of an investigation of the hadronic leading order anomalous magnetic moments of the electron, muon and tau lepton from first principles in twisted mass lattice QCD. With lattice data for multiple pion masses in the range $230 \mathrm{~MeV} \lesssim m_{PS} \lesssim 490 \mathrm{~MeV}$, multiple lattice volumes and three lattice spacings we perform the extrapolation to the continuum and to the physical pion mass and check for all systematic uncertainties in the lattice calculation. As a result we calculate $a_{l}^\mathrm{hlo}$ for the three Standard Model leptons with controlled statistical and systematic error in agreement with phenomenological determinations using dispersion relations and experimental data. We present results for the leading order QCD correction to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon including the first two generations of quarks as dynamical degrees of freedom. Several light quark masses are examined in order to yield a controlled extrapolation to the physical pion mass. We analyse ensembles for three different lattice spacings and several volumes in order to investigate lattice artefacts and finite-size effects, respectively. We present two examples of applications of the analytic continuation method for computing the hadronic vacuum polarization function in space- and time-like momentum regions. These examples are the Adler function and the leading order hadronic contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment. We present a four-flavour lattice calculation of the leading-order hadronic vacuum polarisation contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, $a_\mathrm{\mu}^{\rm hvp}$, arising from quark-connected Feynman graphs. It is based on ensembles featuring $N_f=2+1+1$ dynamical twisted mass fermions generated by the European Twisted Mass Collaboration (ETMC). Several light quark masses are used in order to yield a controlled extrapolation to the physical pion mass. We employ three lattice spacings to examine lattice artefacts and several different volumes to check for finite-size effects. Incorporating the complete first two generations of quarks allows for a direct comparison with phenomenological determinations of $a_\mathrm{\mu}^{\rm hvp}$. Our final result including an estimate of the systematic uncertainty $$a_{\mathrm{\mu}}^{\rm hvp} = 6.74(21)(18) \cdot 10^{-8}$$ shows a good overall agreement with these computations., Comment: 24 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in JHEP

We propose a method to compute the hadronic vacuum polarization function on the lattice at continuous values of photon momenta bridging between the spacelike and timelike regions. We provide two independent demonstrations to show that this method leads to the desired hadronic vacuum polarization function in Minkowski spacetime. We show with the example of the leading-order QCD correction to the muon anomalous magnetic moment that this approach can provide a valuable alternative method for calculations of physical quantities where the hadronic vacuum polarization function enters., Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures; v2, version accepted for publication in PRD

We present a stochastic method for the calculation of baryon three-point functions that is more versatile compared to the typically used sequential method. We analyze the scaling of the error of the stochastically evaluated three-point function with the lattice volume and find a favorable signal-to-noise ratio suggesting that our stochastic method can be used efficiently at large volumes to compute hadronic matrix elements., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, v2, final version accepted for publication in EPJC

We present the first four-flavour lattice calculation of the leading-order hadronic vacuum-polarisation contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, a_{\mu}^{hvp}, and the hadronic running of the QED coupling constant, \Delta \alpha_{QED}^{hvp} (Q^2). In the heavy sector a mixed-action setup is employed. The bare quark masses are determined from matching the K- and D-meson masses to their physical values. Several light quark masses are used in order to yield a controlled extrapolation to the physical pion mass by utilising a recently proposed improved method. Precision computation of hadronic physics with lattice QCD is becoming feasible. The last decade has seen percent-level calculations of many simple properties of mesons, and the last few years have seen calculations of baryon masses, including the nucleon mass, accurate to a few percent. As computational power increases and algorithms advance, the precise calculation of a variety of more demanding hadronic properties will become realistic. With this in mind, I discuss the current lattice QCD calculations of generalized parton distributions with an emphasis on the prospects for well-controlled calculations for these observables as well. I will do this by way of several examples: the pion and nucleon form factors and moments of the nucleon parton and generalized-parton distributions., Comment: proceedings of plenary talk at QNP 2012

Nonperturbative QCD corrections are important to many low-energy electroweak observables, for example the muon magnetic moment. However, hadronic corrections also play a significant role at much higher energies due to their impact on the running of standard model parameters, such as the electromagnetic coupling. Currently, these hadronic contributions are accounted for by a combination of experimental measurements, effective field theory techniques and phenomenological modeling but ideally should be calculated from first principles. Recent developments indicate that many of the most important hadronic corrections may be feasibly calculated using lattice QCD methods. To illustrate this, we will examine the lattice computation of the leading-order QCD corrections to the muon magnetic moment, paying particular attention to a recently developed method but also reviewing the results from other calculations. We will then continue with several examples that demonstrate the potential impact of the new approach: the leading-order corrections to the electron and tau magnetic moments, the running of the electromagnetic coupling, and a class of the next-to-leading-order corrections for the muon magnetic moment. We perform a high-statistics precision calculation of nucleon matrix elements using an open sink method allowing us to explore a wide range of sink-source time separations. In this way the influence of excited states of nucleon matrix elements can be studied. As particular examples we present results for the nucleon axial charge $g_A$ and for the first moment of the isovector unpolarized parton distribution $_{u-d}$. In addition, we report on preliminary results using the generalized eigenvalue method for nucleon matrix elements. We present a dedicated analysis of the influence of excited states on the calculation of nucleon matrix elements. This calculation is performed at a fixed value of the lattice spacing, volume and pion mass that are typical of contemporary lattice computations. We focus on the nucleon axial charge, g_A, for which we use about 7,500 measurements, and on the average momentum of the unpolarized isovector parton distribution, _{u-d}, for which we use about 23,000 measurements. All computations are done employing N_f=2+1+1 maximally-twisted-mass Wilson fermions and using non-perturbatively calculated renormalization factors. Excited state effects are shown to be negligible for g_A whereas they lead to an O(10%) downward shift for _{u-d}., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

We present a derivation of the finite-size formulae in a moving frame with total momentum P=(2\pi/L)(e1+e2). We present a reliable nonperturbative calculation of the QCD correction, at leading order in the electromagnetic coupling, to the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron, muon, and tau leptons using two-flavor lattice QCD. We use multiple lattice spacings, multiple volumes, and a broad range of quark masses to control the continuum, infinite-volume, and chiral limits. We examine the impact of the commonly ignored disconnected diagrams and introduce a modification to the previously used method that results in a well-controlled lattice calculation. We obtain 1.513(43) 10^(-12), 5.72(16) 10^(-8), and 2.650(54) 10^(-6) for the leading-order two-flavor QCD correction to the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron, muon, and tau, respectively, each accurate to better than 3%., Comment: added paragraph on chiral extrapolation and additional references, other minor changes, version accepted by PRL

As algorithms and computing power have advanced, lattice QCD has become a precision technique for many QCD observables. However, the calculation of nucleon matrix elements remains an open challenge. I summarize the status of the lattice effort by examining one observable that has come to represent this challenge, average-x: the fraction of the nucleon's momentum carried by its quark constituents. Recent results confirm a long standing tendency to overshoot the experimentally measured value. We calculate the leading-order hadronic correction to the anomalous magnetic moments of each of the three charged leptons in the Standard Model: the electron, muon and tau. Working in two-flavor lattice QCD, we address essentially all sources of systematic error: lattice artifacts, finite-size effects, quark-mass extrapolation, momentum extrapolation and disconnected diagrams. The most significant remaining systematic error, the exclusion of the strange and charm quark contributions, will be addressed in our four-flavor calculation. We achieve a statistical accuracy of 2% or better for the physical values for each of the three leptons and the systematic errors are at most comparable., Comment: Proceedings of invited talk at ICHEP 2010

We present the first lattice calculation of nucleon matrix elements using four dynamical flavors. We use the $N_f=2+1+1$ maximally twisted mass formulation. The renormalization is performed non-perturbatively in the RI$^\prime$-MOM scheme and results are given for the vector and axial vector operators with up to one-derivative. Our calculation of the average momentum of the unpolarized non-singlet parton distribution is presented and compared to our previous results obtained from the $N_f=2$ case., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures. We perform a non-perturbative lattice calculation of the P-wave pion-pion scattering phase in the rho-meson decay channel using two flavors of maximally twisted mass fermions at pion masses ranging from 480 MeV to 290 MeV. Making use of finite-size methods, we evaluate the pion-pion scattering phase in the center-of-mass frame and two moving frames. Applying an effective range formula, we find a good description of our results for the scattering phase as a function of the energy covering the resonance region. We calculate the leading order hadronic contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment using twisted mass lattice QCD. The pion masses range from 330 MeV to 650 MeV. We use two lattice spacings, a=0.079 fm and 0.063 fm, to study lattice artifacts. Finite-size effects are studied for two values of the pion mass, and we calculate the disconnected contributions for four ensembles. Lattice QCD calculations of hadron structure are a valuable complement to many experimental programs as well as an indispensable tool to understand the dynamics of QCD. I present a focused review of a few representative topics chosen to illustrate both the challenges and advances of our community: the momentum fraction, axial charge and charge radius of the nucleon. Using two flavors of maximally twisted mass fermions, we calculate the S-wave pion-pion scattering length in the isospin I=2 channel and the P-wave pion-pion scattering phase in the isospin I=1 channel. In the former channel, the lattice calculations are performed at pion masses ranging from 270 MeV to 485 MeV. We use chiral perturbation theory at next-to-leading order to extrapolate our results. At the physical pion mass, we find m_pi a_pipi(I=2)=-0.04385(28)(38) for the scattering length. In the latter channel, the calculation is currently performed at a single pion mass of 391 MeV. Making use of finite size methods, we evaluate the scattering phase in both the center of mass frame and the moving frame. We present new high-statistics results for nucleon form factors at pion masses of approximately 290, 350, 500, and 600 MeV using a mixed action of domain wall valence quarks on an improved staggered sea. The use of chirally rotated boundary conditions provides a formulation of the Schroedinger functional that is compatible with automatic O(a)-improvement of Wilson fermions in the bulk. The elimination of bulk O(a) terms requires the non-perturbative tuning of the critical mass and one additional boundary counterterm. We calculate the s-wave pion-pion scattering length in the isospin I=2 channel in lattice QCD for pion masses ranging from 270 Mev to 485 Mev using two flavors of maximally twisted mass fermions at a lattice spacing of 0.086 fm. Additionally, we check for lattice artifacts with one calculation at a finer lattice spacing of 0.067 fm. We use chiral perturbation theory at next-to-leading order to extrapolate our results. We calculate the vacuum polarization tensor for pion masses from 480 MeV to 270 MeV using dynamical twisted mass fermions at a lattice spacing of 0.086 fm. We analyze the form of the polarization tensor on the lattice using the symmetries of twisted QCD and we study both finite size effects and lattice artifacts at a pion mass of 310 MeV. Transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDPDFs) encode information about the intrinsic motion of quarks inside the nucleon. They are important non-perturbative ingredients in our understanding of, e.g., azimuthal asymmetries and other qualitative features in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering experiments. We present first calculations on the lattice, based on MILC gauge configurations and propagators from LHPC. They yield polarized and unpolarized transverse momentum dependent quark densities and enable us to test the assumption of factorization in x and transverse momentum. The operators we employ are non-local and contain a Wilson line, whose renormalization requires the removal of a divergence linear in the cutoff 1/a., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures, submitted as PoS LC2008 053

We present preliminary numerical studies in Lattice QCD related to the intrinsic transverse momentum distribution of partons in the nucleon. We employ non-local operators, consisting of spatially separated quark creation and annihilation operators connected by a straight Wilson line. A clear signal is already obtained from a small number of configurations at a pion mass of about 600 MeV. As an example, we demonstrate that we can obtain the first x-moment of the transverse momentum dependent parton distribution function f_1^{n=1}(k_T) from our data. Our results, which are not renormalized, show a Gaussian-like distribution. Generalized parton distributions encompass a wealth of information concerning the three-dimensional quark and gluon structure of the nucleon, and thus provide an ideal focus for the study of hadron structure using lattice QCD. The special limits corresponding to form factors and parton distributions are well explored experimentally, providing clear tests of lattice calculations, and the lack of experimental data for more general cases provides opportunities for genuine predictions and for guiding experiment. Calculation of moments of generalized parton distributions in lattice QCD requires more powerful techniques than those previously used to calculate moments of structure functions. Hence, we present a novel approach that exploits the full information content from a given lattice configuration by measuring an overdetermined set of lattice observables to provide maximal statistical constraints on the generalized form factors at a given virtuality, t. In an exploratory investigation using unquenched QCD configurations at intermediate sea quark masses, we demonstrate that our new technique is superior to conventional methods and leads to reliable numerical signals for the n=2 flavor singlet generalized form factors up to 3 GeV^2. The contribution from connected diagrams in the flavor singlet sector to the total quark angular momentum is measured to an accuracy of the order of one percent., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, LaTeX, minor elaboration of formalism and singular value decomposition for non-specialists and addition of several references

A description is given of a group interview process used with candidates for a nine month, field-based teacher training program. Five candidates were interviewed together by several faculty observers in a forty-five minute session. Faculty observed and noted leadership skills, verbalization and sharing of ideas, ability to convince others, acceptance of other's contributions, and skills in summarizing and synthesizing. Also noted were personal characteristics. It was felt that more information on the students' potential for success in student teaching could be obtained in this format than in an individual interview format. (JD)
