This paper introduces a hierarchical framework for decision-making and optimization, leveraging Large Language Models (LLMs) for adaptive code generation. Instead of direct decision-making, LLMs generate and refine executable control policies through a meta-policy that guides task generation and a base policy for operational actions. Applied to a simplified microgrid scenario, the approach achieves up to 15 percent cost savings by iteratively improving battery control strategies. The proposed methodology lays a foundation for integrating LLM-based tools into planning and control tasks, offering adaptable and scalable solutions for complex systems while addressing challenges of uncertainty and reproducibility.

Helicenes are a class of molecules potentially suitable in several technological applications with intrinsic structural chirality which makes them interesting scaffolds for chiroptical properties. As desirable is tuning chiroptical property by synthesis, we combine experimental optical characterization and ab-initio calculations to study how different substituents influence the optical properties of [6]helicene. We explore anchoring groups presenting a variety of sizes and chemical nature, finding that both electron withdrawing and donating groups redshift and dwindle the optical activity of the molecule. We suggest the observed dumping in transitions energy and intensity is connected to the strength of the perturbation induced by the substituent on the pi-conjugation of the aromatic rings. Such observations demonstrate how helicenes' chiroptical properties can be fine-tuned via stereochemical control of the substituents and validates a simple yet effective computational setup to model the optics of those systems.

Early detection of chronic and Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) is crucial for effective treatment during the initial stages. This study explores the application of wearable devices and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in order to predict weight loss changes in overweight and obese individuals. Using wearable data from a 1-month trial involving around 100 subjects from the AI4FoodDB database, including biomarkers, vital signs, and behavioral data, we identify key differences between those achieving weight loss (>= 2% of their initial weight) and those who do not. Feature selection techniques and classification algorithms reveal promising results, with the Gradient Boosting classifier achieving 84.44% Area Under the Curve (AUC). The integration of multiple data sources (e.g., vital signs, physical and sleep activity, etc.) enhances performance, suggesting the potential of wearable devices and AI in personalized healthcare., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, 6 tables, 1 appendix

This paper addresses the convergence analysis of a variant of the LevenbergMarquardt method (LMM) designed for nonlinear least-squares problems with non-zero residue. This variant, called LMM with Singular Scaling (LMMSS), allows the LMM scaling matrix to be singular, encompassing a broader class of regularizers, which has proven useful in certain applications. In order to establish local convergence results, a careful choice of the LMM parameter is made based on the gradient linearization error, dictated by the nonlinearity and size of the residual. Under completeness and local error bound assumptions we prove that the distance from an iterate to the set of stationary points goes to zero superlinearly and that the iterative sequence converges. Furthermore, we also study a globalized version of the method obtained using linesearch and prove that any limit point of the generated sequence is stationary. Some examples are provided to illustrate our theoretical results.

High-Energy Physics experiments are facing a multi-fold data increase with every new iteration. This is certainly the case for the upcoming High-Luminosity LHC upgrade. Such increased data processing requirements forces revisions to almost every step of the data processing pipeline. One such step in need of an overhaul is the task of particle track reconstruction, a.k.a., tracking. A Machine Learning-assisted solution is expected to provide significant improvements, since the most time-consuming step in tracking is the assignment of hits to particles or track candidates. This is the topic of this paper. We take inspiration from large language models. As such, we consider two approaches: the prediction of the next word in a sentence (next hit point in a track), as well as the one-shot prediction of all hits within an event. In an extensive design effort, we have experimented with three models based on the Transformer architecture and one model based on the U-Net architecture, performing track association predictions for collision event hit points. In our evaluation, we consider a spectrum of simple to complex representations of the problem, eliminating designs with lower metrics early on. We report extensive results, covering both prediction accuracy (score) and computational performance. We have made use of the REDVID simulation framework, as well as reductions applied to the TrackML data set, to compose five data sets from simple to complex, for our experiments. The results highlight distinct advantages among different designs in terms of prediction accuracy and computational performance, demonstrating the efficiency of our methodology. Most importantly, the results show the viability of a one-shot encoder-classifier based Transformer solution as a practical approach for the task of tracking.

Additive manufacturing (AM; 3D printing) has clear benefits in the production of lightweight mirrors for astronomy: it can create optimised lightweight structures and combine multiple components into one. New capabilities in AM ceramics, silicon carbide infiltrated with silicon and fused silica, offer the possibility to combine the design benefits of AM with a material suitable for visible, ultraviolet and X-ray applications. This paper will introduce the printing methods and post-processing steps to convert AM ceramic samples into reflective mirrors. Track reconstruction is a vital aspect of High-Energy Physics (HEP) and plays a critical role in major experiments. In this study, we delve into unexplored avenues for particle track reconstruction and hit clustering. Firstly, we enhance the algorithmic design effort by utilising a simplified simulator (REDVID) to generate training data that is specifically composed for simplicity. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this data in guiding the development of optimal network architectures. Additionally, we investigate the application of image segmentation networks for this task, exploring their potential for accurate track reconstruction. Moreover, we approach the task from a different perspective by treating it as a hit sequence to track sequence translation problem. Specifically, we explore the utilisation of Transformer architectures for tracking purposes. Our preliminary findings are covered in detail. By considering this novel approach, we aim to uncover new insights and potential advancements in track reconstruction. This research sheds light on previously unexplored methods and provides valuable insights for the field of particle track reconstruction and hit clustering in HEP.

This work is motivated by the interest in determining the effect of the micro-anatomy of the spinal subarachnoid space on the cerebrospinal fluid flow and on the associated transport of solutes. To that aim, we focus on a canonical model problem in which a circular post of radius $a$, confined between two parallel plates separated by a distance $2h$, is subjected to an oscillatory flow. In particular, we are concerned with the steady, viscous, time-averaged flow that persists in the vicinity on the cylinder, when the stroke length of the oscillating flow, $U_{\infty}/\omega$ is smaller or comparable to the radius of the post, $a$, where $U_{\infty}$ and $\omega$ are the mean velocity amplitude and the corresponding angular frequency, respectively. First, we analyze the asymptotic limit of small values of the stroke length varying the aspect ratio of the post $\lambda$ and the Womersley number $M$. First-order steady-streaming corrections at leading order have been computed, together with associated Stokes-drift component, the sum of both yielding the mean Lagrangian velocity field. The confinement effect is seen to induce the three-dimensionality of flow. Moreover, in the mid plane the time-averaged steady flow exhibits a recirculating vortex attached to the wall of the post that decreases as $M$ increases for low values of $M$. However, for values of $M$ larger than a critical one, $M_{cr}(\lambda)$, a second, outer vortex is also formed. The dependence $M_{cr}(\lambda)$ has been quantified. The analysis has been corroborated experimentally for a fixed aspect ratio. Consideration of an anharmonic oscillating flow shows the fort-and-aft symmetry of the steady flow is broken. A simplified model of an initially excited oscillator as a quantum system interacting with a large number of oscillators acting as a reservoir has been developed in this work. All these oscillators are in their ground state uncoupled each other and at the limit of the weak coupling between the system and the reservoir. This system could be an oscillator excited in a microcavity that interacts with the vacuum's electromagnetic field at zero temperature. This work's primary goal is to obtain the system's density matrix's exact solution in these conditions. The general approach calculates all oscillators' evolution as a single isolated entity using the evolution operator. Starting from a total initial state that can be factored between the system and the reservoir, the evolution is unitary, and the partial trace is taken in all the degrees of freedom of the environment to obtain the density matrix of the system at any instant of time; this procedure requires diagonalizing Hamiltonian. In this work was researched the problems of classicalization and measurement unifying them in a single problem: the problem of collapse, for this purpose was developed a working program -- the classicalization's program -- in an interpretation of objective collapse that was proposed for this purpose, and which overcomes the limitations of the official interpretation. This program explain that the classicization arises by alternating the unitary evolution and the collapses, due to the redistribution of energy, so the classical mechanics emerges as a good approximation; however, was defined deep chaos as the regime where macrosystems are so sensitive to the initial conditions that are affected by the collapses and indeterminism of quantum mechanics, allowing the emergence of thermodynamics with its irreversibility; at this level the observation occurs because the measurement device (classic) extends their collapses at microsystem through quantum entanglement. We give extensive empirical evidence against the common belief that variational learning is ineffective for large neural networks. We show that an optimizer called Improved Variational Online Newton (IVON) consistently matches or outperforms Adam for training large networks such as GPT-2 and ResNets from scratch. IVON's computational costs are nearly identical to Adam but its predictive uncertainty is better. We show several new use cases of IVON where we improve finetuning and model merging in Large Language Models, accurately predict generalization error, and faithfully estimate sensitivity to data. Intermolecular interactions are crucial in determining the morphology of solution-processed semiconducting polymer thin films. However, these random interactions often lead to disordered or short-range ordered structures. Achieving long-range order in these films has been a challenge due to limited control over microscopic interactions in current techniques. Here, we present a molecular-level methodology that leverages spatial matching of intermolecular dynamics among solutes, solvents, and substrates to induce directional molecular assembly in weakly bonded polymers. Within the optimized dynamic scale of 2.5 \r{A} between polymer side chains and self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on nanogrooved substrates, our approach transforms random aggregates into unidirectional fibers with a remarkable increase in the anisotropic stacking ratio from 1 to 11. The Flory-Huggins-based molecular stacking model accurately predicts the transitioning order on various SAMs, validated by morphologic and spectroscopic observations. The enhanced structural ordering spans over 3 orders of magnitude in length, raising from the smallest 7.3 nm random crystallites to >14 um unidirectional fibers on sub-millimeter areas. The trajectories of a single bubble rising in the vicinity of a vertical solid wall are experimentally investigated. Distinct initial wall-bubble distances are considered for three different bubble rising regimes, i.e. rectilinear, planar zigzag, and spiral. The problem is defined by three control parameters, namely the Galilei number, $Ga$, the Bond number, $Bo$, and the initial dimensionless distance between the bubble centroid and the wall, $L$. We focus on high-Bond numbers, varying $L$ from 1 to 4, and compare the results with the corresponding unbounded case, $L \rightarrow \infty$. In all cases, the bubble deviates from the expected unbounded trajectory and migrates away from the wall as it rises due to the overpressure generated in the gap between the bubble and the wall. This repulsion is more evident as the initial wall-bubble distance decreases. Moreover, in the planar zigzagging regime, the wall is found to impose a preferential zigzagging plane perpendicular to it when $L$ is small enough. Only slight wall effects are observed in the velocity or the oscillation amplitude and frequency. The wall migration effect is more evident for the planar zigzagging case and less relevant for the rectilinear one. Finally, the influence of the vertical position of the wall is also investigated. When the wall is not present upon release, the bubbles have the expected behavior for the unbounded case and experience the migration only instants before reaching the wall edge. This repulsion is, in general, more substantial than in the initially-present-wall case.

A Q-matrix is a binary matrix that defines the relationship between items and latent variables and is widely used in diagnostic classification models (DCMs), and can also be adopted in multidimensional item response theory (MIRT) models. The construction process of the Q-matrix is typically carried out by experts in the subject area of the items and statistical procedures can be used to verify its suitability. In DCMs, different approaches have been proposed for validating the Q-matrix through iterative algorithms. This article presents a method of empirical Q-matrix validation for MIRT models. A simulation study and an application to real data of morphology skills of elementary students are conducted to examine the viability of the method. Relevant issues regarding the implementation of the method and the results obtained are discussed. [This paper will be published in "Applied Measurement in Education."]

The role of type Ia supernovae (SN Ia), mainly the Delay Time Distributions (DTDs) determined by the binary systems, and the yields of elements created by different explosion mechanisms, are studied by using the MulChem chemical evolution model applied to our Galaxy. We explored 15 DTDs and 12 tables of elemental yields produced by different SN Ia explosion mechanisms, doing a total of 180 models. Chemical abundances for $\alpha$-elements (O, Mg, Si, Ca) and Fe derived from these models are compared with recent solar region observational data of $\alpha$-elements over Fe relative abundances, [X/Fe], as a function of [Fe/H] and age. A multidimensional maximum likelihood analysis shows that 52 models are able to fit all these datasets simultaneously, considering the 1$\sigma$ confidence level. The combination of STROLG1 DTD and LN20181 SN Ia yields provides the best fit. The exponential model with very prompt events is a possible DTD, but a combination of several channels is more probable. The SN Ia yields that include MCh or Near MCh correspond to 39 (75%) of the 52 best models. Regarding the DTD, 31 (60%) of the 52 most probable models correspond to the SD scenario, while the remaining 21 (40%) are based on the DD scenario. Our results also show that the relatively large dispersion of the observational data may be explained by the stellar migration from other radial regions, and/or perhaps a combination of DTDs and explosion channels., Comment: 26 pages, 28 figures. We investigate the linear Floquet stability of two fluid layers undergoing oscillations in the direction parallel to the flexible wall that separates them. This canonical configuration is inspired by the cerebrospinal fluid flow in the spinal canal of subjects with hydro-/syringomyelia.The analysis focuses on the marginal conditions for the onset of instability, and how these depend on the spatial wavelength of the perturbation, and on the values of the control parameters, which are the two channel widths, the Reynolds number, and the wall stiffness. Unstable perturbations are found to oscillate synchronous with the base flow. The wavelength of the most unstable perturbation, of the order of the stroke length of the basic oscillatory motion, depends strongly on the wall stiffness, but is only weakly influenced by the channel widths and the Reynolds number. In general, around criticality, it was found that increasing the Reynolds number has a destabilizing effect, and that decreasing the canal widths stabilizes the instability. The wall stiffness on the other hand has a non-monotonic effect, exhibiting an intermediate value for which the instability is maximally amplified. The present analysis is a first step towards a better understanding of the physical mechanisms that govern many (bio)fluid mechanical problems that involve oscillatory flows near compliant walls.

Inspired by certain regularization techniques for linear inverse problems, in this work we investigate the convergence properties of the Levenberg-Marquardt method using singular scaling matrices. Under a completeness condition, we show that the method is well-defined and establish its local quadratic convergence under an error bound assumption. We also prove that the search directions are gradient-related allowing us to show that limit points of the sequence generated by a line-search version of the method are stationary for the sum-of-squares function. The usefulness of the method is illustrated with some examples of parameter identification in heat conduction problems for which specific singular scaling matrices can be used to improve the quality of approximate solutions.

Due to its proximity, the stellar populations of the Galactic bulge (GB) can be resolved and can be studied in detail. This allows tracing the bulge metallicity distribution function (MDF) for different spatial regions within the bulge, which may give us clues about the bulge formation and evolution scenarios. In this work, we developed a chemical evolution model (CEM), taking into account the mass distribution in the bulge and disc, to derive the radial dependence of this time-scale in the Galaxy. Since the infall rate depends on that time scale in the CEM, the results of the model were used to test a scenario where the bulge is formed inside-out. The obtained results for the $[\alpha/\mbox{Fe}]$ vs. [Fe/H] relationship, the MDF and the [Fe/H] radial gradient in the bulge have been compared to available data in the literature. The model is able to reproduce most of the observational data: the spread in the relation $[\alpha/\mbox{Fe}]$ vs. [Fe/H], the MDF shape in different regions of the bulge, the [Fe/H] radial gradient inside it and the age-metallicity relation, as well as the [$\alpha$/Fe] evolution with age. The results of the model point to a scenario where the bulk of the bulge stars pre-existed the boxy/peanut X-shape bar formation. As a result, the classical origin of the GB is not ruled out and this scenario may be invoked to explain the chemical properties of the Galactic bulge., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures. The Astropy Project supports and fosters the development of open-source and openly-developed Python packages that provide commonly needed functionality to the astronomical community. A key element of the Astropy Project is the core package $\texttt{astropy}$, which serves as the foundation for more specialized projects and packages. In this article, we summarize key features in the core package as of the recent major release, version 5.0, and provide major updates for the Project. We then discuss supporting a broader ecosystem of interoperable packages, including connections with several astronomical observatories and missions. We also revisit the future outlook of the Astropy Project and the current status of Learn Astropy. We present updated LHC limits on the minimal universal extra dimensions (MUED) model from the Run 2 searches. We scan the parameter space against a number of searches implemented in the public code \textsc{CheckMATE} and derive up-to-date limits on the MUED parameter space from 13 TeV searches. The strongest constraints come from a search dedicated to squarks and gluinos with one isolated lepton, jets and missing transverse energy. In the procedure we take into account initial state radiation and stress its importance in the MUED searches, which is not always appreciated., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

New antibiotics are needed to battle growing antibiotic resistance, but the development process from hit, to lead, and ultimately to a useful drug, takes decades. Although progress in molecular property prediction using machine-learning methods has opened up new pathways for aiding the antibiotics development process, many existing solutions rely on large datasets and finding structural similarities to existing antibiotics. Challenges remain in modelling of unconventional antibiotics classes that are drawing increasing research attention. In response, we developed an antimicrobial activity prediction model for conjugated oligoelectrolyte molecules, a new class of antibiotics that lacks extensive prior structure-activity relationship studies. Our approach enables us to predict minimum inhibitory concentration for E. coli K12, with 21 molecular descriptors selected by recursive elimination from a set of 5,305 descriptors. This predictive model achieves an R2 of 0.65 with no prior knowledge of the underlying mechanism. We find the molecular representation optimum for the domain is the key to good predictions of antimicrobial activity. In the case of conjugated oligoelectrolytes, a representation reflecting the 3-dimensional shape of the molecules is most critical. Although it is demonstrated with a specific example of conjugated oligoelectrolytes, our proposed approach for creating the predictive model can be readily adapted to other novel antibiotic candidate domains.

Long-lived particles have become a new frontier in the exploration of physics beyond the Standard Model. In this paper, we present the implementation of four types of long-lived particle searches, viz. displaced leptons, disappearing track, displaced vertex (together with muons or with missing energy), and heavy charged tracks. These four categories cover the signatures of a large range of physics models. Silver, especially in the form of nanostructures, is widely employed as an antimicrobial agent in a large range of commercial products. The origin of the biocidal mechanism has been elucidated in the last decades, and most likely originates from silver cation release due to oxidative dissolution followed by cellular uptake of silver ions, a process that causes a severe disruption of bacterial metabolism and eventually leads to eradication. Despite the large number of works dealing with the effects of nanosilver shape/size on the antibacterial mechanism and on the (bio)physical chemistry pathways that drive bacterial eradication, little effort has been devoted to the investigation of the silver NPs plasmon response upon interaction with bacteria. Here we present a detailed investigation of the bacteria-induced changes of the plasmon spectral and dynamical features after exposure to one of the most studied bacterial models, Escherichia Coli. Ultrafast pump-probe measurements indicate that the dramatic changes on particle size/shape and crystallinity, which stem from a bacteria-induced oxidative dissolution process, translate into a clear modification of the plasmon spectral and dynamical features. This study may open innovative new avenues in the field of biophysics of bio-responsive materials, with the aim of providing new and reliable biophysical signatures of the interaction of these materials with complex biological environments.

The power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of organic solar cells (OSCs) using non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) have now reached 18%. However, this is still lower than inorganic solar cells, for which PCEs >20% are commonplace. A key reason is that OSCs still show low open-circuit voltages (Voc) relative to their optical band gaps, attributed to non-radiative recombination. For OSCs to compete with inorganics in efficiency, all non-radiative loss pathways must be identified and where possible, removed. Here, we show that in most NFA OSCs, the majority of charge recombination at open-circuit proceeds via formation of non-emissive NFA triplet excitons (T1); in the benchmark PM6:Y6 blend, this fraction reaches 90%, contributing 60 mV to the reduction of Voc. We develop a new design to prevent recombination via this non-radiative channel through the engineering of significant hybridisation between the NFA T1 and the spin-triplet charge transfer exciton (3CTE). We model that the rate of the back charge transfer from 3CTE to T1 can be reduced by an order of magnitude, allowing re-dissociation of the 3CTE. We then demonstrate NFA systems where T1 formation is suppressed. Analytical considerations and potential flow numerical simulations of the pinch-off of bubbles at high Reynolds numbers reveal that the bubble minimum radius, $r_n$, decreases as $\tau\propto r_n^2 \, (-\ln{r_n^2})^{1/2}$, where $\tau$ is the time to break-up, when the local shape of the bubble near the singularity is symmetric. However, if the gas convective terms in the momentum equation become of the order of those of the liquid, the bubble shape is no longer symmetric and the evolution of the neck changes to a $r_n\propto\tau^{1/3}$ power law. We study the large-scale helical vortex shedding regime in the wake of an axisymmetric body with a blunt trailing edge at high Reynolds numbers, both experimentally and by means of local, linear, spatiotemporal stability analysis. In the instability analysis we take into account the detailed downstream evolution of the basic flow behind the body base. The study confirms the existence of a finite region of absolute instability for the first azimuthal number in the near field of the wake. Such instability is believed to trigger the large scale helical vortex shedding downstream of the recirculating zone. Inhibition of vortex shedding is examined by blowing a given flow rate of fluid through the base of the slender body. The extent of the locally absolute region of the flow is calculated as a function of the bleed coefficient, $C_b=q_b/(\pi R^2u_\infty)$, where $q_b$ is the bleed flow rate, $R$ is the radius of the base and $u_\infty$ is the incident free-stream velocity. It is shown that the basic flow becomes convectively unstable everywhere for a critical value of the bleed coefficient of $C_b^*\sim 0.13$, such that no self-excited regime is expected for $C_b>C_b^*$. In addition, we report experimental results of flow visualizations and hot-wire measurements for increasing values of the bleed coefficient. When a sufficient amount of base bleed is applied, flow visualizations indicate that vortex shedding is suppressed and that the mean flow becomes axisymmetric. In this Brief Communication we study experimentally the flow regimes that appear in co-axial air-water jets discharging into a stagnant air atmosphere and we propose a simple explanation for their occurrence based on linear, local, spatiotemporal stability theory. In addition to the existence of a periodic bubbling regime for low enough values of the water-to-air velocity ratio, $u=u_w/u_a$, our experiments revealed the presence of a jetting regime for velocity ratios higher than a critical one, $u_c$. In the bubbling regime, bubbles form periodically from the tip of an air ligament whose length increases with $u$. However, when $u> u_c$ a long, slender gas jet is observed inside the core of the liquid coflow. Since in the jetting regime the downstream variation of the flow field is slow, we performed a local, linear spatiotemporal stability analysis with uniform velocity profiles to model the flow field of the air-water jet. Similar to the transition from dripping to jetting in capillary liquid jets, the analysis shows that the change from the bubbling to the jetting regime can be understood in terms of the transition from an absolute to a convective instability., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

We report a detailed experimental characterization of the periodic bubbling regimes that take place in an axisymmetric air-water jet when the inner air stream is forced by periodic modulations of the pressure at the upstream air feeding chamber. When the forcing pressure amplitude is larger than a certain critical value, the bubble formation process is effectively driven by the selected frequency, leading to the formation of nearly monodisperse bubbles whose volume is reduced by increasing the forcing frequency. We reveal the existence of two different breakup modes, M1 and M2, under effective forcing conditions. The bubble formation in mode M1 resembles the natural bubbling process, featuring an initial radial expansion of an air ligament attached to the injector, whose initial length is smaller than the wavelength of a small interfacial perturbation induced by the oscillating air flow rate. The expansion stage is followed by a ligament collapse stage, which begins with the formation of an incipient neck that propagates downstream while collapsing radially inwards, leading to the pinch-off of a new bubble. These two stages take place faster than in the unforced case as a consequence of the the air flow modulation induced by the forcing system. The breakup mode M2 takes place with an intact ligament longer than one disturbance wavelength, whereby the interface already presents a local necking region at pinch-off, and leads to the formation of bubbles from the tip of an elongated air filament without an expansion stage. Scaling laws that provide closed expressions for the bubble volume, the intact ligament length, and the transition from the M1 breakup mode to the M2, as functions of the relevant governing parameters, are deduced from the experimental data., Comment: 27 pages, 12 figures, submitted to Int. We measure the homogeneous excitation linewidth of regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene), a model semicrystalline polymeric semiconductor, by means of two-dimensional coherent photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy. At a temperature of 8\,K, we find a linewidth that is always $\gtrsim 110$\,meV full-width-at-half-maximum, which is a significant fraction of the total linewidth. It displays a spectral dependence and is minimum near the 0--0 origin peak. In this paper we propose formulas for the distance between vertices of a generalized Sierpi\'{n}ski graph $S(G,t)$ in terms of the distance between vertices of the base graph $G$. In particular, we deduce a recursive formula for the distance between an arbitrary vertex and an extreme vertex of $S(G,t)$, and we obtain a recursive formula for the distance between two arbitrary vertices of $S(G,t)$ when the base graph is triangle-free. From these recursive formulas, we provide algorithms to compute the distance between vertices of $S(G,t)$. In addition, we give an explicit formula for the diameter and radius of $S(G,t)$ when the base graph is a tree.

A map $f : V \rightarrow \{0, 1, 2\}$ is a Roman dominating function on a graph $G=(V,E)$ if for every vertex $v\in V$ with $f(v) = 0$, there exists a vertex $u$, adjacent to $v$, such that $f(u) = 2$. The weight of a Roman dominating function is given by $f(V) =\sum_{u\in V}f(u)$. The minimum weight of a Roman dominating function on $G$ is called the Roman domination number of $G$. In this article we study the Roman domination number of Generalized Sierpi\'{n}ski graphs $S(G,t)$. More precisely, we obtain a general upper bound on the Roman domination number of $S(G,t)$ and we discuss the tightness of this bound. In particular, we focus on the cases in which the base graph $G$ is a path, a cycle, a complete graph or a graph having exactly one universal vertex.

All-organic-based photovoltaic solar cells have attracted considerable attention because of their low-cost processing and short energy payback time. In such systems the primary dissociation of an optical excitation into a pair of photocarriers has been recently shown to be extremely rapid and efficient, but the physical reason for this remains unclear. Here, two-dimensional photocurrent excitation spectroscopy, a novel non-linear optical spectroscopy, is used to probe the ultrafast coherent decay of photoexcitations into charge-producing states in a polymer:fullerene based solar cell. The two-dimensional photocurrent spectra are interpreted by introducing a theoretical model for the description of the coupling of the electronic states of the system to an external environment and to the applied laser fields. The experimental data show no cross-peaks in the two-dimensional photocurrent spectra, as predicted by the model for coherence times between the exciton and the photocurrent producing states of 20\,fs or less.

In this paper we obtain closed formulae for several parameters of generalized Sierpi\'{n}ski graphs $S(G,t)$ in terms of parameters of the base graph $G$. In particular, we focus on the chromatic, vertex cover, clique and domination numbers.

We establish various extensions of the convexity Dines theorem for a (joint-range) pair of inhomogeneous quadratic functions. If convexity fails we describe those rays for which the sum of the joint-range and the ray is convex. These results are suitable for dealing nonconvex inhomogeneous quadratic optimization problems under one quadratic equality constraint. As applications of our main results, different sufficient conditions for the validity of S-lemma (a nonstrict version of Finsler's theorem) for inhomogenoeus quadratic functions, is presented. We analyze the global linear stability of the axisymmetric flow around a spinning bullet-shaped body as a function of the Reynolds number, $Re=w_{\infty}D/\nu$, and of the rotation parameter $\Omega=\omega D/(2 w_{\infty})$, in the ranges $Re<450$ and $0\leq\Omega\leq 1$. Here, $w_{\infty}$ and $\omega$ are the free-stream and the body rotation velocities respectively, and $\nu$ is the fluid kinematic viscosity. The spectrum and the eigenfunctions obtained allow us to explain the different bifurcations from the axisymmetric state observed in previous numerical studies. Our results reveal that three global eigenmodes, denoted Low-Frequency (LF), Medium-Frequency (MF) and High-Frequency (HF) modes, become unstable in different regions of the $Re-\Omega$ parameter plane. We provide precise computations of the corresponding neutral curves, that divide the $Re-\Omega$ plane into four different regions: the stable axisymmetric flow prevails for small enough values of $Re$ and $\Omega$, while three different frozen states, where the wake structures co-rotate with the body at different angular velocities, take place as a consequence of the destabilization of the LF, MF and HF modes. Several direct numerical simulations of the nonlinear state associated to the MF mode, identified here for the first time, are also reported to complement the linear stability results. Finally, we point out the important fact that, since the axisymmetric base flow is $SO(2)$-symmetric, the theory of equivariant bifurcations implies that the weakly non-linear regimes that emerge close to criticality must necessarily take the form of rotating-wave states. You measure the value of a quantity x for a number of systems (cells, molecules, people, chunks of metal, DNA vectors, etc.). You repeat the whole set of measures in different occasions or assays, which you try to design as equal to one another as possible. Despite the effort, you find that the results are too different from one assay to another. As a consequence, some systems' averages present standard deviations that are too large to render the results statistically significant. In this work, we present a novel correction method of very low mathematical and numerical complexity that can reduce the standard deviation in your results and increase their statistical significance as long as two conditions are met: inter-system variations of x matter to you but its absolute value does not, and the different assays display a similar tendency in the values of x; in other words, the results corresponding to different assays present high linear correlation. We demonstrate the improvement that this method brings about on a real cell biology experiment, but the method can be applied to any problem that conforms to the described structure and requirements, in any quantitative scientific field that has to deal with data subject to uncertainty., Comment: Supplementary material at http://bit.ly/14I718S

Conformal mapping of a slab of a two-dimensional ultrasonic crystal generate a closed geometrical arrangement of ultrasonic scatterers with appealing acoustic properties. This acoustic shell is able to confine ultrasonic modes. Some of these internal resonances can be induced from an external wave source. The mapping of a linear defect produces a wave-guide that exhibits a spatial-frequency selection analogous to that characteristic of a synthetic "cochlea". Orders of vanishing of zeros of zeta functions have much arithmetic information encoded in them. For the absolute zeta function, Dinesh Thakur gave sufficient conditions for the order of vanishing of its zeros when the finite field has two elements. Such conditions consider only principal ideals. This result was generalized by Thakur and Diaz-Vargas. Now the conditions involve not only the principal ideals but all the classes of ideals, still in the field of two elements. The eigenfunctions of nested wells with incommensurate boundary geometry, in both hydrodynamic shallow water regime and quantum cases, are systematically and exhaustively studied in this letter. The boundary arrangement of the nested wells consist of polygonal ones, square or hexagonal, with a concentric immersed similar but rotated well or plateau. A rich taxonomy of wave patterns, such as quasicrystalline states, their crystalline rational approximants and some other exotic but well known tilings, is found in these mimicked experiments. To our best knowledge, these hydrodynamic rational approximants are presented here for the first time in a hydrodynamic-quantum framework. The corresponding statistical nature of the energy level spacing distribution reflects this taxonomy by changing the spectral types., Comment: 4 pages, 10 figures

A dielectric vertical cavity is used to study the spin dynamics of molecularly self-assembled colloidal CdSe quantum dots (QDs). Using this structure, a nearly 30-fold enhancement of Faraday rotation is observed, which scales with the quality factor of the cavity. In this classical nonperturbative regime, the amplified rotation is attributed to optically excited spins interacting with multiple passes of the probe photons in the cavity. By applying this general planar cavity motif to Faraday rotation, dynamical measurements are accessible at extremely low powers on relatively small numbers of quantum confined spins. In CdSe QDs, low power measurements reveal that contributions from exciton and electron spin precession are largely dependent upon the power of excitation. Current practice in stellar evolution is to employ one-dimensional calculations that quantitatively apply only to a minority of the observed stars (single non-rotating stars, or well detached binaries). Even in these systems, astrophysicists are dependent on approximations to handle complex three-dimensional processes like convection. Understanding the structure of binary stars, like those that lead to the Type Ia supernovae used to measure the expansion of the universe, are grossly non-spherical and await a 3D treatment. To approach very large problems like multi-dimensional modeling of stars, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has invested in massively parallel computers and invested even more in developing the algorithms to utilize them on complex physics problems. We have leveraged skills from across the lab to develop a 3D stellar evolution code, Djehuty (after the Egyptian god for writing and calculation) that operates efficiently on platforms with thousands of nodes, with the best available physical data (opacities, EOS, etc.). Djehuty has incorporated all basic physics for modeling stars including an accurate equation of state, radiation transport by diffusion, thermonuclear reaction rates, and hydrodynamics, and we have begun testing it in a number of applications., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures. Athena is the ATLAS off-line software framework, based upon the GAUDI architecture from LHCb. As part of ATLAS' continuing efforts to enhance and customise the architecture to meet our needs, we have developed a data object description tool suite and service for Athena. The aim is to provide a set of tools to describe, manage, integrate and use the Event Data Model at a design level according to the concepts of the Athena framework (use of patterns, relationships, ...). Moreover, to ensure stability and reusability this must be fully independent from the implementation details. After an extensive investigation into the many options, we have developed a language grammar based upon a description language (IDL, ODL) to provide support for object integration in Athena. We have then developed a compiler front end based upon this language grammar, JavaCC, and a Java Reflection API-like interface. We have then used these tools to develop several compiler back ends which meet specific needs in ATLAS such as automatic generation of object converters, and data object scripting interfaces.
