Abstract

PFS (Prime Focus Spectrograph), a next generation facility instrument on the 8.2-meter Subaru Telescope, is a very wide-field, massively multiplexed, optical and near-infrared spectrograph. Exploiting the Subaru prime focus, 2394 reconfigurable fibers will be distributed over the 1.3 deg field of view. The spectrograph has been designed with 3 arms of blue, red, and near-infrared cameras to simultaneously observe spectra from 380nm to 1260nm in one exposure at a resolution of ~1.6-2.7A. An international collaboration is developing this instrument under the initiative of Kavli IPMU. The project is now going into the construction phase aiming at undertaking system integration in 2017-2018 and subsequently carrying out engineering operations in 2018-2019. Abstract

Improvements in the precision of the astrophysical flux scale are needed to answer fundamental scientific questions ranging from cosmology to stellar physics. The unexpected discovery that the expansion of the universe is accelerating was based upon the measurement of astrophysical standard candles that appeared fainter than expected. To characterize the underlying physical mechanism of the "Dark Energy" responsible for this phenomenon requires an improvement in the visible-NIR flux calibration of astrophysical sources to 1% precision. These improvements will also enable large surveys of white dwarf stars, e.g. GAIA, to advance stellar astrophysics by testing and providing constraints for the mass-radius relationship of these stars. ACCESS (Absolute Color Calibration Experiment for Standard Stars) is a rocket-borne payload that will enable the transfer of absolute laboratory detector standards from NIST to a network of stellar standards with a calibration accuracy of 1% and a spectral resolving power of R = 500 across the 0.35-1.7 micron bandpass. Among the strategies being employed to minimize calibration uncertainties are: (1) judicious selection of standard stars (previous calibration heritage, minimal spectral features, robust stellar atmosphere models), (2) execution of observations above the Earth's atmosphere (eliminates atmospheric contamination of the stellar spectrum), (3) a single optical path and detector (to minimize visible to NIR cross-calibration uncertainties), (4) establishment of an a priori error budget, (5) on-board monitoring of instrument performance, and (6) fitting stellar atmosphere models to the data to search for discrepancies and confirm performance., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures

3. A Model Computer Literacy Course.

Abstract

Designed to address the varied computer skill levels of college students, this proposed computer literacy course would be modular in format, with modules tailored to address various levels of expertise and permit individualized instruction. An introductory module would present both the history and future of computers and computing, followed by an overview of computer hardware, software, and basic concepts and phrases. Students would then be introduced to basic MS-DOS commands, and a closing module would raise issues related to the ethics of computer use, privacy, and the social impact of computers. Other basic modules would introduce students to text processing, spreadsheet and database management, programming languages, and further information on MS-DOS or other operating systems. Advanced modules would be developed as needed. Instruction would be delivered in a variety of ways, including lecture, instructional videotapes, interactive disks, use of a projector tied to a PC, or completely individualized work combined with recitation classes. In order to facilitate the development of such a program, a structure within the institution should be established which includes an advisory committee to plan and implement the program, and a core of faculty, staff and students with computer expertise to develop the program. 4. Using Computers and Original Texts to Teach Critical Reading and Thinking.

Abstract

While ability to read and think critically is the very basis of post-secondary education, increasing numbers of college students lack these skills. A sequence of two courses in critical reading and thinking are currently offered in the Concentrated Studies program at Duquesne University in Pennsylvania. In these courses, students who are inadequate readers study original texts (such as the writings of Aeschylus, Melville, and Tolstoy), and make use of innovative computer aids that provide coaching and drill-and-practice support. The computer programs--ABSTRACT, which teaches how to analyze a work for literary genre and structure, and INTERLOCUTOR, which allows teachers to create tutorials for machine-readable text--are original, and are written for IBM personal computers. The courses link texts to critical skills, for example, applying grammatical structure to Aristotle, or propositional logic to Machiavelli. The success of the approach has been demonstrated by retention, student achievement, and increase in the ability of Duquesne students to read and think critically. (SKC)
