1. On the Relationship between CH$_3$OD Abundance and Temperature in the Orion KL Nebula

Abstract

The relative abundances of singly-deuterated methanol isotopologues, [CH$_{2}$DOH]/[CH$_{3}$OD], in star-forming regions deviate from the statistically expected ratio of 3. In Orion KL, the nearest high-mass star-forming region to Earth, the singly-deuterated methanol ratio is about 1, and the cause for this observation has been explored through theory for nearly three decades. We present high-angular resolution observations of Orion KL using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array to map small-scale changes in CH$_{3}$OD column density across the nebula, which provide a new avenue to examine the deuterium chemistry during star and planet formation. By considering how CH$_{3}$OD column densities vary with temperature, we find evidence of chemical processes that can significantly alter the observed column densities. The astronomical data are compared with existing theoretical work and support D-H exchange between CH$_{3}$OH and heavy water (i.e., HDO and D$_{2}$O) at methanol's hydroxyl site in the icy mantles of dust grains. The enhanced CH$_{3}$OD column densities are localized to the Hot Core-SW region, a pattern that may be linked to the coupled evolution of ice mantel chemistry and star formation in giant molecular clouds. Abstract

The Orion Kleinmann-Low nebula (Orion KL) is notoriously complex and exhibits a range of physical and chemical components. We conducted high angular resolution (sub-arcsecond) observations of $^13$CH$_{3}$OH $\nu=0$ ($\sim$0.3$^{\prime\prime}$ and $\sim$0.7$^{\prime\prime}$) and CH$_3$CN $\nu_8=1$ ($\sim$0.2$^{\prime\prime}$ and $\sim$0.9$^{\prime\prime}$) line emission with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to investigate Orion KL's structure on small spatial scales (${\le}350$ au). Gas kinematics, excitation temperatures, and column densities were derived from the molecular emission via a pixel-by-pixel spectral line fitting of the image cubes, enabling us to examine the small-scale variation of these parameters. Sub-regions of the Hot Core have a higher excitation temperature in a 0.2$^{\prime\prime}$ beam than a 0.9$^{\prime\prime}$ beam, indicative of possible internal sources of heating. Furthermore, the velocity field includes a bipolar ${\sim}7{-}8$ km s$^{-1}$ feature with a southeast-northwest orientation against the surrounding ${\sim}4{-}5$ km s$^{-1}$ velocity field, which may be due to an outflow. We also find evidence of a possible source of internal heating toward the Northwest Clump, since the excitation temperature there is higher in a smaller beam versus a larger beam. Finally, the region southwest of the Hot Core (Hot Core-SW) presents itself as a particularly heterogeneous region bridging the Hot Core and Compact Ridge. 3. Simulating the Multi-Epoch Direct Detection Technique to Isolate the Thermal Emission of the Non-Transiting Hot Jupiter HD187123B

Abstract

We report the 6.5$\sigma$ detection of water from the hot Jupiter HD187123b with a Keplerian orbital velocity $K_p$ of 53 $\pm$ 13 km/s. This high confidence detection is made using a multi-epoch, high resolution, cross correlation technique, and corresponds to a planetary mass of 1.4$^{+0.5}_{-0.3}$ $M_J$ and an orbital inclination of 21 $\pm$ 5$^{\circ}$. The technique works by treating the planet/star system as a spectroscopic binary and obtaining high signal-to-noise, high resolution observations at multiple points across the planet's orbit to constrain the system's binary dynamical motion. All together, seven epochs of Keck/NIRSPEC $L$-band observations were obtained, with five before the instrument upgrade and two after. Using high resolution SCARLET planetary and PHOENIX stellar spectral models, along with a line-by-line telluric absorption model, we were able to drastically increase the confidence of the detection by running simulations that could reproduce, and thus remove, the non-random structured noise in the final likelihood space well. The ability to predict multi-epoch results will be extremely useful for furthering the technique. Here, we use these simulations to compare three different approaches to combining the cross correlations of high resolution spectra and find that the Zucker 2003 log(L) approach is least affected by unwanted planet/star correlation for our HD187123 data set. Furthermore, we find that the same total S/N spread across an orbit in many, lower S/N epochs rather than fewer, higher S/N epochs could provide a more efficient detection. This work provides a necessary validation of multi-epoch simulations which can be used to guide future observations and will be key to studying the atmospheres of further separated, non-transiting exoplanets., Comment: Accepted to AJ, 14 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

We performed a spectral line survey called Exploring Molecular Complexity with ALMA (EMoCA) toward Sagittarius~B2(N) between 84.1 and 114.4 GHz with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in its Cycles 0 and 1. We determined line intensities of n-propyl cyanide in the ground vibrational states of its gauche and anti conformers toward the hot molecular core Sagittarius B2(N2) which suggest that we should also be able to detect transitions pertaining to excited vibrational states. We wanted to determine spectroscopic parameters of low-lying vibrational states of both conformers of n-propyl cyanide to search for them in our ALMA data. We recorded laboratory rotational spectra of n-propyl cyanide in two spectral windows between 36 and 127 GHz. We searched for emission lines produced by these states in the ALMA spectrum of Sagittarius B2(N2). We modeled their emission and the emission of the ground vibrational states assuming local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE). We have made extensive assignments of a- and b-type transitions of the four lowest vibrational states of the gauche conformer which reach J and Ka quantum numbers of 65 and 20, respectively. We assigned mostly a-type transitions for the anti conformer with J and Ka quantum numbers up to 48 and 24, respectively. Rotational and Fermi perturbations between two anti states allowed us to determine their energy difference. The resulting spectroscopic parameters enabled us to identify transitions of all four vibrational states of each conformer in our ALMA data. The emission features of all states, including the ground vibrational state, are well-reproduced with the same LTE modeling parameters, which gives us confidence in the reliability of the identifications, even for the states with only one clearly detected line., Comment: 29 pages, 6 plus 9 figures, abstract abbreviated at end, accepted at Astronomy and Astrophysics

5. Carbon Chains and Methanol toward Embedded Protostars

Abstract

Large interstellar organic molecules are potential precursors of prebiotic molecules. Their formation pathways and chemical relationships with one another and simpler molecules are therefore of great interest. In this paper, we address the relationship between two classes of large organic molecules, carbon chains and saturated complex organic molecules (COMs), at the early stages of star formation through observations of C4H and CH3OH. We surveyed these molecules with the IRAM 30m telescope toward 16 deeply embedded low-mass protostars selected from the Spitzer c2d ice survey. We find that CH3OH and C4H are positively correlated indicating that these two classes of molecules can coexist during the embedded protostellar stage. The C4H/CH3OH gas abundance ratio tentatively correlates with the CH4/CH3OH ice abundance ratio in the same lines of sight. 6. Compact Star Clusters in Nearby Dwarf Irregular Galaxies

Abstract

Nearby dwarf irregular galaxies were searched for compact star clusters using data from the HST archives. Three of the galaxies were found to host both populous clusters (M_V<-9.5 at a fiducial age of 10 Myr) and super-star clusters (M_V<-10.5 at 10 Myr). Four other dwarf galaxies, two of which contain populous and super-star clusters, were drawn from the literature. We find upper limits to integrated galactic M_B and star formation rate for the formation of these clusters. However, galaxies brighter and more active than these limits rarely form them. Yet when they do form, the associated star formation activity is very high, with numerous compact clusters of similar age in the same complex and often evidence for a galaxy-wide perturbation as the trigger. This tendency to concentrate star formation in localized regions of high column density is consistent with previous suggestions that self-gravity must be strong and the pressure must be high to allow a cool phase of gas to exist in equilibrium. Statistical considerations emphasize the peculiarity of super-star clusters in dwarf galaxies, which are too small to sample the cluster mass function to that extreme. We suggest that triggered large-scale flows and ambient gravitational instabilities in the absence of shear make the clouds that form super-star clusters in small galaxies. This is unlike the case in spirals where density wave flows and scale-free compression from turbulence dominate. Further compar- isons with spirals give insight into Larsen & Richtler's relation between star formation rate per unit area and the fraction of young stars in massive dense clusters. We suggest that this relation is the result of a physical connection between maximum cluster mass, interstellar pressure, column density, and star formation rate, combined with a size-of-sample effect., Comment: To appear in AJ, March 2002

7. Simulation of Charge Collection to Spacecraft Surfaces: Freja Satellite

Abstract

As spacecraft travel through plasma, spacecraft surfaces become charged by the collection of charged particles. This process is referred to as Surface Charging. These charges can be detrimental to the vehicle's electronic subsystems as they present a threat of electrostatic discharge (ESD) to onboard circuitry. The process of Surface Charging is complex and is affected by many elements. The charging of each surface is unique. The potential of an individual surface is dependent upon many variables including but not limited to the surface's geometry, material and its location. Each surface also has unique interactions with the surrounding plasma. Other factors that play large roles in the charging process is the density and temperature of plasma ions and electrons. Using Nascap-2k, a model of the Freja satellite has been constructed, and its auroral plasma environment has been imitated to simulate surface charging characteristics. The charging process of the Freja satellite has been modeled iteratively with incremental changes in both the Maxwellian electron temperature (eV) as well as the Gaussian electron energy (eV). This study provides an analysis of the sensitivity between spacecraft surface charging and these two primary variables of electron differential flux.

Abstract

To help teachers make effective use of ten curriculum guides in career education for the seventh and eighth grade levels, the manual comments upon several topics: the career development philosophy, the basic ingredients of the D.C. program, the roles of the classroom teacher and the guidance counselor in the program, and the setting for the program's implementation. The manual also describes the characteristics and organization of the guides. Suggestions for planning ahead include a ten-page Grade 7 outline plan for implementing module 1 (a career cluster). Methods of introducing the curriculum to students and parents are discussed, and the importance of involving the community in classroom activity is stressed. The document concludes with chapters on career development activities and the evaluation of student learning.
