Dense systems of magnetic nanoparticles may exhibit dipolar collective behavior. However, two fundamental questions remain unsolved: i) whether the transition temperature may be affected by the particle anisotropy or it is essentially determined by the intensity of the interparticle dipolar interactions, and ii) what is the minimum ratio of dipole-dipole interaction ($E_\text{dd}$) to nanoparticle anisotropy ($K_{\text{ef}}V$, anisotropy $\times$ volume) energies necessary to crossover from individual to collective behavior. A series of particle assemblies with similarly intense dipolar interactions but widely varying anisotropy is studied. The $K_\text{ef}$ is tuned through different degrees of cobalt-doping in maghemite nanoparticles, resulting in a variation of nearly an order of magnitude. All the bare particle compacts display collective behavior, except the one made with the highest anisotropy particles, which presents ``marginal'' features. Thus, a threshold of $K_{\text{ef}} V/E_{\text{dd}} \approx 130$ to suppress collective behavior is derived, in good agreement with Monte Carlo simulations. This translates into a crossover value of $\approx 1.7$ for the easily accessible parameter $T_\text{MAX}$(interacting)$/T_\text{MAX}$(non-interacting) (ratio of the peak temperatures of the zero-field-cooled magnetization curves of interacting and dilute particle systems), which is successfully tested against the literature to predict the individual-like$/$collective behavior of any given interacting particle assembly comprising relatively uniform particles., Comment: 24 pages (proof version), 6 figures

Applications based on aggregates of magnetic nanoparticles are becoming increasingly widespread, ranging from hyperthermia to magnetic recording. However, although some uses require a collective behavior, other need a more individual-like response, the conditions leading to either of these behaviors are still poorly understood. Here we use nanoscale-uniform binary random dense mixtures with different proportions of oxide magnetic nanoparticles with low$/$high anisotropy as a valuable tool to explore the crossover from individual to collective behavior. Two different anisotropy scenarios have been studied in two series of binary compacts: M1, comprising maghemite ($\gamma$-Fe$_2$O$_3$) nanoparticles of different sizes (9.0 nm $/$ 11.5 nm) with barely a factor of 2 between their anisotropy energies and M2, mixing equally-sized pure maghemite (low-anisotropy) and Co-doped maghemite (high-anisotropy) nanoparticles with a large difference in anisotropy energy (ratio $>$ 8). Interestingly, while the M1 series exhibits collective behavior typical of strongly-coupled dipolar systems, the M2 series presents a more complex scenario where different magnetic properties resemble either "individual-like" or "collective", crucially emphasizing that the collective character must be ascribed to specific properties and not to the system as a whole. The mechanical and magnetic properties of the newly discovered MAB-phase class of materials based upon AlFe2B2 were investigated. The samples were synthesised from stoichiometric amounts of all constituent elements. X-ray diffraction shows that the main phase is orthorhombic with an elongated b-axis, similar to AlFe2B2. The low hardness and visual inspection of the samples after deformation indicate that these compounds are deformed via a delamination process. When substituting iron in AlFe2B2 with manganese, the magnetism in the system goes from being ferro- to antiferromagnetic via a disordered ferrimagnetic phase exhibited by AlFeMnB2. Density functional theory calculations indicate a weakening of the magnetic interactions among the transitions metal ions as iron is substituted by manganese in AlFe2B2. The Mn-Mn exchange interactions in AlMn2 B2 are found to be very small.

Binary random compacts with different proportions of small (volume V) and large (volume 2V) bare maghemite nanoparticles (NPs) are used to investigate the effect of controllably broadening the particle size distribution on the magnetic properties of magnetic NP assemblies with strong dipolar interaction. A series of eight random mixtures of highly uniform 9.0 and 11.5 nm diameter maghemite particles prepared by thermal decomposition are studied. In spite of severely broadened size distributions in the mixed samples, well defined superspin glass transition temperatures are observed across the series, their values increasing linearly with the weight fraction of large particles., Comment: 5 pages 4 figures, submitted version

The properties of natural and artificial assemblies of interacting elements, ranging from Quarks to Galaxies, are at the heart of Physics. The collective response and dynamics of such assemblies are dictated by the intrinsic dynamical properties of the building blocks, the nature of their interactions and topological constraints. Here we report on the relaxation dynamics of the magnetization of artificial assemblies of mesoscopic spins. In our model nano-magnetic system - square artificial spin ice - we are able to control the geometrical arrangement and interaction strength between the magnetically interacting building blocks by means of nano-lithography. Using time resolved magnetometry we show that the relaxation process can be described using the Kohlrausch law and that the extracted temperature dependent relaxation times of the assemblies follow the Vogel-Fulcher law. The results provide insight into the relaxation dynamics of mesoscopic nano-magnetic model systems, with adjustable energy and time scales, and demonstrates that these can serve as an ideal playground for the studies of collective dynamics and relaxations., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures

The crystal and magnetic structures of AlFe2B2 have been studied with a combination of X-ray and neutron diffraction and electronic structure calculations. The magnetic and magnetocaloric properties have been investigated by magnetisation measurements. The samples have been produced using high temperature synthesis and subsequent heat treatments. The compound crystallises in the orthorhombic crystal system Cmmm and it orders ferromagnetically at 285 K through a second order phase transition. At temperatures below the magnetic transition the magnetic moments align along the crystallographic $a$-axis. The magnetic entropy change from 0 to 800 kA/m was found to be -1.3 J/K kg at the magnetic transition temperature.

We present a comprehensive study of the thickness dependence of static and magneto-dynamic magnetic properties of La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$. Epitaxial pulsed laser deposited La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ / SrTiO$_3$(001) thin films in the range from 3 unit cells (uc) to 40 uc (1.2 - 16 nm) have been investigated through ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy (FMR) and SQUID magnetometry at variable temperature. Magnetodynamically, three different thickness, $d$, regimes are identified: 20 uc $\lesssim d$ uc where the system is bulk like, a transition region 8 uc $\le d \lesssim 20$ uc where the FMR line width and position depend on thickness and $d=6$ uc which displays significantly altered magnetodynamic properties, while still displaying bulk magnetization. Magnetization and FMR measurements are consistent with a nonmagnetic volume corresponding to $\sim$ 4 uc. We observe a reduction of Curie temperature ($T_C$) with decreasing thickness, which is coherent with a mean field model description. The reduced ordering temperature also accounts for the thickness dependence of the magnetic anisotropy constants and resonance fields. The damping of the system is strongly thickness dependent, and is for thin films dominated by thickness dependent anisotropies, yielding both a strong 2-magnon scattering close to $T_c$ and a low temperature broadening. For the bulk like samples a large part of the broadening can be linked to spread in magnetic anisotropies attributed to crystal imperfections/domain boundaries of the bulk like film.

STM based magnetotransport measurements of epitaxial La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ 32 nm thick films with and without an internal LaMnO$_3$ layer (0-8 nm thick) grown on Nb doped SrTiO$_3$ are presented. The measurements reveal two types of low field magnetoresistance (LFMR) with a magnitude of $\sim 0.1-1.5\%$. One LFMR contribution is identified as a conventional grain boundary/domain wall scattering through the symmetric I-V characteristics, high dependence on tip placements and insensitivity to introduction of LaMnO$_3$ layers. The other contribution originates from the reverse biased Nb doped SrTiO$_3$ interface and the interface layer of La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$. Both LFMR contributions display a field dependence indicative of a higher coercivity ($\sim$200 Oe) than the bulk film. LaMnO$_3$ layers are found to reduce the rectifying properties of the junctions, and sub micron lateral patterning by electron beam lithography enhances the diodic properties, in accordance with a proposed transport model based on the locality of the injected current.

The specific heat and thermodynamics of ${\rm Fe}_2{\rm P}$ single-crystals around the first order paramagnetic (PM) to ferromagnetic (FM) phase transition at $T_{\rm C} = 217 \,{\rm K}$ are empirically investigated. The magnitude and direction of the magnetic field relative to the crystal axes govern the derived H-T phase diagram. Strikingly different phase contours are obtained for fields applied parallel and perpendicular to the $c$-axis of the crystal. In parallel fields, the FM state is stabilized, while in perpendicular fields, the phase transition is split into two, with an intermediate FM phase where there is no spontaneous magnetization along the $c$-axis. The zero-field transition displays a text-book example of a first order transition with different phase stability limits on heating and cooling. The results have special significance since ${\rm Fe}_2{\rm P}$ is the parent material to a family of compounds with outstanding magnetocaloric properties., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

Temperature-dependent crystallographic and magnetic studies on stoichiometric single crystals of LiCu2O2 are reported. The magnetic properties are similar to earlier findings demonstrating antiferromagnetic ordering below 25 K. Evidence of magnetoelastic coupling is observed in the thermal expansion along the c-direction; not only at the low temperature antiferromagnetic transitions, but an anomalous behavior of the thermal expansion indicate magnetoelastic coupling also to the magnetic ordering related to a weak spontaneous magnetic moment appearing at 150 K. We report results of magnetization and ac susceptibility measurements down to very low fields on a single crystal of the perovskite manganite, La$_{0.82}$Ca$_{0.18}$MnO$_3$. This composition falls in the intriguing ferromagnetic insulator region of the manganite phase diagram. In contrast to earlier beliefs, our investigations reveal that the system is magnetically (and in every other sense) single-phase with a ferromagnetic ordering temperature of $\sim$ 170 K. However, this ferromagnetic state is magnetically frustrated, and the system exhibits pronounced glassy dynamics below 90 K. Based on measured dynamical properties, we propose that this quasi-long-ranged ferromagnetic phase, and associated superspin glass behavior, is the true magnetic state of the system, rather than being a macroscopic mixture of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases as often suggested. Our results provide an understanding of the quantum phase transition from an antiferromagnetic insulator to a ferromagnetic metal via this ferromagnetic insulating state as a function of $x$ in La$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$, in terms of the possible formation of magnetic polarons., Comment: to appear in PRX

What does the equilibrium atomic, molecular or spin configuration of a glass phase look like? Is there only one unique equilibrium configuration or are there infinitely many configurations of equal energy? The processes and mechanisms governing the path towards equilibrium, i.e. the dynamics of glassy systems, provide insights to these questions. Here we discuss the intrinsic dynamics of different glassy magnets: of spin-glasses, frustrated ferromagnets, superspin-glasses and other nanostructured systems with competing ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions and randomness in their spatial distribution. The effects of Co2+ doping on the structural, magnetic and dielectric properties of the multiferroic frustrated antiferromagnet Mn3TeO6 have been investigated. Ceramic samples of the solid solution series Mn3-xCoxTeO6 were prepared by a solid-state reaction route. X-ray and neutron powder diffraction and electron microscopy techniques were combined with calorimetric, dielectric and magnetic measurements to investigate the dependence of the crystal structure and physical properties on temperature and composition. It is shown that the compounds with x up to 2.4 all adopt the trigonal corundum-related structure of pure Mn3TeO6 (space group R-3) in the temperature range 5-295 K and that the lattice parameters a and c and the unit-cell volume V decrease linearly with increasing Co2+ concentration. The low- temperature magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity data evidence the antiferromagnetic ordering of all samples. The Neel temperature linearly increases with Co2+ concentration x. Curie-Weiss fits of the high temperature susceptibility indicate that the magnetic frustration decreases with x. The derived magnetic structure of Mn3TeO6 can be described as an incommensurately modulated magnetic spin state with k = [0, 0, kz] and an elliptical spin- spiral order of spins within the chains of MnO6 octahedra. With increasing Co2+ concentration the propagation vector kz changes from 0.453 (x = 0) to 0.516 (x = 2.4). The magnetic anisotropy changes as well, leading to a reorientation of the spiral-basal plane. A possible coexistence of long-range order of electrical dipoles and magnetic moments in Mn3-xCoxTeO6 is discussed., Comment: 30 pages, 13 figures

Magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of high-purity, giant magnetocaloric polycrystalline and single-crystalline Fe2P are investigated. Fe2P displays a moderate magnetic entropy change which spans over 70 K and the presence of strong magnetization anisotropy proves this system is not fully itinerant but displays a mix of itinerant and localized magnetism. We here confirm the occurrence of spin glass phase transition and extract estimates of associated critical exponents of a highly monodisperse and densely compacted system of bare maghemite nanoparticles. The complex metal oxides Ni2InSbO6 (NISO) and Ni2ScSbO6 (NSSO) have been prepared in form of polycrystalline powders by a solid state reaction route. The crystal structure and magnetic properties of the compounds were investigated using a combination of X-ray and neutron powder diffraction, electron microscopy, calorimetric and magnetic measurements. The compounds adopt a trigonal structure, space group R3, of the corundum related Ni3TeO6 (NTO) type. Only one of the octahedral Ni positions (Ni(2)) of the NTO structure was found to be occupied by In (Sc). NTO has non-centrosymmetric structure and is ferroelectric below 1000 K, dielectric and second harmonic measurements suggest that also NISO and NSSO are correspondingly ferroelectric. Magnetization measurements signified antiferromagnetic ordering below TN=60 K (NSSO) and 76 K (NISO). The magnetic structure is formed by two antiferromagnetically coupled incommensurate helices with the spiral axis along the b-axis and propagation vector k = [0, ky,0] with ky= 0.036(1) (NSSO) and ky= 0.029(1) (NISO). LiCu_2O_2 single crystals were studied in the temperature range 300-1100 K by means of heating-cooling curves of differential thermal analysis (DTA), thermogravimetry (TG), X-ray powder diffraction and electrical measurements. A reversible first-order phase transition between orthorhombic and tetragonal phases was found to take place at 993 K. At the transition, a peak is observed in the DTA curves, as well as jumps of the unit cell parameters and electrical resistivity. Considering the crystal structure of LiCu_2O_2 and the entropy change associated with the phase transition, it is concluded that the phase transition is related to processes of order-disorder of the Cu2+ and Li+ cations onto their crystallographic positions., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures

Due of its polymorphism, Mn$_2$FeSbO$_6$ can be synthesized at high pressures and temperatures as a ferrimagnetic ilmenite or an antiferromagnetic perovskite. The structural phase transformation is discussed in detail, and magnetic structures are proposed for both phases. The high-pressure Mn$_2$FeSbO$_6$ polymorph is a rare example of $A_2 B'B"$O$_6$ perovskite with solely Mn cations on the $A$-site. Fe and Sb cations are ordered on the $B$-sites. Solid solutions of (1-x)LaFeO3-(x)PbTiO3 (0

The thickness dependence of the magnetic properties of amorphous Fe90Zr10 layers has been explored using Fe90Zr10/Al75Zr25 multilayers. The Al75Zr25 layer thickness is kept at 40 \AA, while the thickness of the Fe90Zr10 layers is varied between 5 and 20 \AA. The thickness of the Al75Zr25 layers is sufficiently large to suppress any significant interlayer coupling. Both the Curie temperature and the spontaneous magnetization decrease non-linearly with decreasing thickness of the Fe90Zr10 layers. No ferromagnetic order is observed in the multilayer with 5 {\AA} Fe90Zr10 layers. The variation of the Curie temperature $T_c$ with the Fe90Zr10 layer thickness $t$ is fitted with a finite-size scaling formula $[1-\Tc(t)/\Tc(\infty)]=[(t-t')/t_0]^{-\lambda}$, yielding $\lambda=1.2$, and a critical thickness $t'=6.5$ \AA, below which the Curie temperature is zero., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

We present an investigation on the large magnetic anisotropy of Fe_{2}P, based on {\it Ab Initio} density-functional theory calculations, with a full potential linear muffin-tin orbital (FP-LMTO) basis. We obtain an uniaxial magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) of 664 \mu eV/f.u., which is in decent agreement with experimental observations. Based on a band structure analysis the microscopical origin of the large magnetic anisotropy is explained. We report magnetic, dielectric and magnetodielectric responses of pure monoclinic bulk phase of partially-disordered La2NiMnO6, exhibiting a spectrum of unusual properties and establish that this system intrinsically is a true multiglass with a large magnetodielectric coupling (8-20%) over a wide range of temperatures (150 - 300 K). Specifically, our results establish a unique way to obtain colossal magnetodielectricity, independent of any striction effects, by engineering the asymmetric hopping contribution to the dielectric constant via the tuning of the relative spin orientations between neighboring magnetic ions in a transition metal oxide system. Mn3TeO6 exhibits a corundum-related A3TeO6 structure and a complex magnetic structure involving two magnetic orbits for the Mn atoms [*]. Mn3-xCdxTeO6 (x=0, 1, 1.5 and 2) ceramics were synthesized by solid state reaction and investigated using X-ray powder diffraction, electron microscopy, calorimetric and magnetic measurements. Cd2+ replaces Mn2+ cations without greatly affecting the structure of the compound. The Mn and Cd cations were found to be randomly distributed over the A-site. Magnetization measurements indicated that the samples order antiferromagnetically at low temperature with a transition temperature that decreases with increasing Cd doping. The nuclear and magnetic structure of one specially prepared 114Cd containing sample: Mn1.5(114Cd)1.5TeO6, was studied using neutron powder diffraction over the temperature range 2 to 295 K. Mn1.5(114Cd)1.5TeO6 was found to order in an incommensurate helical magnetic structure, very similar to that of Mn3TeO6 [*]. A complex magnetic order of the multiferroic compound Co3TeO6 has been revealed by neutron powder diffraction studies on ceramics and crushed single crystals. The compound adopts a monoclinic structure (s.g. C2/c) in the studied temperature range 2 K - 300 K but exhibits successive antiferromagnetic transitions at low temperature. Incommensurate antiferromagnetic order with the propagation vector k1 = (0, 0.485, 0.055) sets in at 26 K. A transition to a second antiferromagnetic structure with k2 = (0, 0, 0) takes place at 21.1 K. Moreover, a transition to a commensurate antiferromagnetic structure with k3 = (0, 0.5, 0.25) occurs at 17.4 K. The magnetic structures have been determined by neutron powder diffraction using group theory analysis as a preliminary tool. Different coordinations of the Co2+ ions involved in the low-symmetry C2/c structure of Co3TeO6 render the exchange-interaction network very complex by itself. The observed magnetic phase transformations are interpreted as an evidence of competing magnetic interactions. The temperature dependent changes in the magnetic structure, derived from refinements of high-resolution neutron data, are discussed and possible mechanisms connected with the spin reorientations are described., Comment: 32 pages, 12 figures

The magnetic phase transition and magnetocaloric properties of mineral and synthetic melanostibite Mn$_2$FeSbO$_6$ with ilmenite-type structure have been studied. Mn$_2$FeSbO$_6$ orders ferrimagnetically below 270 K and is found to undergo a second-order magnetic phase transition. The associated magnetic entropy change amounts to 1.7 J/kgK for the mineral and 1.8 J/kgK synthetic melanostibite for 5 T field change. For the synthetic Mn$_2$FeSbO$_6$ the adiabatic temperature change was estimated from magnetic- and specific heat measurements and amounts to 0.2 K in 1 T field change. The magnetic and electrical properties of Co$_3$TeO$_6$ single-crystals with corundum related structure reveal a magnetic-field induced polarization below 21 K. A sharp peak in the specific heat at \approx 18 K indicates a reconstructive-type first-order phase transition. From second-harmonic generation (SHG) measurements breaking of inversion symmetry is evident and the point-group symmetry was determined as m. The temperature and magnetic-field dependence of the magnetic and electrical polarizations are discussed in the light of the SHG results., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

We studied structural and magnetic properties of a series of insulating double perovskite compounds, La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuRuO$_{6}$ (0 $\le$ x $\le$ 1), representing doping via \textit{A}-site substitution. The end members La$_{2}$CuRuO$_{6}$ and LaSrCuRuO$_{6}$ form in monoclinic structure while the intermediate Sr doped compounds stabilise in triclinic structure. The Cu and Ru ions sit on alternate B-sites of the perovskite lattice with $\sim$15% anti-site defects in the undoped sample while the Sr doped samples show a tendency to higher ordering at B-sites. The undoped (x = 0) compound shows a ferrimagnetic-like behaviour at low temperatures. In surprising contrast to the usual expectation of an enhancement of ferromagnetic interaction on doping, an antiferromagnetic-like ground state is realized for all doped samples (x $>$ 0). Heat capacity measurements indicate the absence of any long range magnetic order in any of these compounds. The magnetic relaxation and memory effects observed in all compounds suggest glassy dynamical properties associated with magnetic disorder and frustration. We show that the observed magnetic properties are dominated by the competition between the nearest neighbour Ru -- O -- Cu 180$^\circ$ superexchange interaction and the next nearest neighbour Ru -- O -- O -- Ru 90$^\circ$ superexchange interaction as well as by the formation of anti-site defects with interchanged Cu and Ru positions. Our calculated exchange interaction parameters from first principles calculations for $x$ = 0 and $x$ = 1 support this interpretation., Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures

The complex metal oxides Mn2ASbO6 (A=In, Sc) with a corundum-related structure A3BO6 have been prepared as polycrystalline powders by a solid state reaction route. The crystal structure and magnetic properties have been investigated using a combination of X-ray and neutron powder diffraction, electron microscopy, calorimetric and magnetic measurements. At room temperature these compounds adopt a trigonal structure, space group R-3 with a = 8.9313(1) {\AA}, c = 10.7071(2) {\AA} (for In) and a = 8.8836(1) {\AA}, c = 10.6168(2) {\AA} (for Sc) which persists down to 1.6 K. The Mn and A cations were found to be randomly distributed over the A-sites. The overall behavior of the magnetization of Mn2InSbO6 and Mn2ScSbO6 is quite similar. In spite of the relatively large amount of Mn ions on the A-site, only short-ranged magnetism is observed. Neutron diffraction patterns of Mn2InSbO6 showed no evidence of a long-range magnetic ordering at 1.6 K, instead only a weak diffuse magnetic peak was observed at low temperatures. The factors governing the observed structural and magnetic properties of Mn2ASbO6 are discussed and compared with those of other Mn-containing complex metal oxides with a corundum-related structure. The structural and magnetic properties of Mn$_2$FeSbO$_6$ single-crystalline mineral and ceramic samples synthesized under thermobaric treatment have been investigated, and compared to theoretical predictions based on first-principles electronic structure calculations. The crystal and magnetic structure of the magnetocaloric compound FeMnP0.5Si0.5 have been studied by means of neutron and X-ray powder diffraction. Single phase samples of nominal composition FeMnP0.5Si0.5 have been prepared by the drop synthesis method. The compound crystallizes in the Fe2P-type structure (P-62m) with the magnetic moments aligned along the aaxis. It is found that the Fe atoms are mainly situated in the tetrahedral 3g site while the Mn atoms prefer the pyramidal 3f position. The material is ferromagnetic (TC = 382 K) and at 296 K the total magnetic moment is 4.4 \mu B/f.u. It is shown that the magnetic moment in the 3f site is larger (2.5 \mu B) than in the 3g site (1.9 \mu B)., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

The complex metal oxide Mn3TeO6 exhibits a corundum related structure and has been prepared both in forms of single crystals by chemical transport reactions and of polycrystalline powders by a solid state reaction route. The crystal structure and magnetic properties have been investigated using a combination of X-ray and neutron powder diffraction, electron microscopy, calorimetric and magnetic measurements. At room temperature this compound adopts a trigonal structure, space group R3 with a = 8.8679(1) {\AA}, c = 10.6727(2) {\AA}. A long-range magnetically ordered state is identified below 23 K. An unexpected feature of this magnetic structure is several types of Mn-chains. Under the action of the incommensurate magnetic propagation vector k = [0, 0, 0.4302(1)] the unique Mn site is split into two magnetically different orbits. One orbit forms a perfect helix with the spiral axis along the c-axis while the other orbit has a sine wave character along the c-axis., Comment: PDF; 16 pages, 6 figures

The compound FeMnP$_{0.50}$Si$_{0.50}$ has been studied by magnetic measurements, M\"ossbauer spectroscopy and electronic structure and total energy calculations. An unexpected high magnetic hyperfine field for Fe atoms located at the tetrahedral Me(1) site in the Fe$_2$P structure is found. The saturation moment derived from magnetic measurements corresponds to 4.4 $\mu_B$/f.u. at low temperatures, a value substantially higher than previously reported, but in accord with the results from our electron structure calculations. This high saturation moment, a first order nature of the ferromagnetic transition and a tunable transition temperature make the Fe$_{2-x}$Mn$_{x}$P$_{1-y}$Si$y$ system promising for magnetocaloric applications., Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures

We have investigated the structural and magnetic properties of antiferroelectric $A_2$CoTeO$_6$ perovskites with $A$ = Cd, Ca, Sr, Pb, and Ba. All compounds are antiferromagnetic at low temperatures, with the antiferromagnetic transition temperature slightly decreasing with decreasing ionic size of the $A$ cation. Such a decrease in antiferromagnetic interaction is not observed in $A^{2+}_2$Co$M^{6+}$O$_6$ materials with other $M^{6+}$ cations of similar ionic sizes, suggesting that Te$^{6+}$ cations affect the electronic and in turn the magnetic structure of the system., Comment: REVTeX style; 6 pages, 8 figures

The complex perovskite Ba2CoTeO6 (BCTO) has been synthesised, and the crystal structure and magnetic properties have been investigated using a combination of X-ray and neutron powder diffraction, electron microscopy and dielectric, calorimetric and magnetic measurements. It was shown that at room temperature this compound adopts the 6L-trigonal perovskite structure, space group P-3m (N 164) (a= 5.7996(1){\AA}, c=14.2658(3){\AA}). The structure comprises dimers of face-sharing octahedra as well as octahedra which share only vertices with their neighbours. A long-range antiferromagnetically ordered state has been identified from neutron diffraction and magnetic studies. The magnetic diffraction peaks were registered below the magnetic transition at about 15 K and a possible model for the magnetic structure is proposed. The complex perovskite Pb2CoTeO6 (PCTO) has been prepared as polycrystalline powders by solid state reaction route, and the crystal structure and magnetic properties have been investigated using a combination of X-ray and neutron powder diffraction, electron microscopy, dielectric, calorimetric and magnetic measurements. It was shown that at room temperature this compound adopts a trigonal perovskite structure, space group R-3 (a= 5.6782(1){\AA}, c= 13.8552(3){\AA}). The compound undergoes a number of temperature-induced phase transitions and adopts four different structures in the temperature range 5-500 K: monoclinic in P21/n(5

Combining experiments with first principles calculations, we show that site-specific doping of Mn into SrTiO3 has a decisive influence on the dielectric properties of these doped systems. We find that phonon contributions to the dielectric constant invariably decrease sharply on doping at any site. However, a sizable, random dipolar contribution only for Mn at the Sr site arises from a strong off-centric displacement of Mn in spite of Mn being in a non-d0 state; this leads to a large dielectric constant at higher temperatures and gives rise to a relaxor ferroelectric behavior at lower temperatures. The isothermal remanent magnetization is used to investigate dynamical magnetic properties of spatially three dimensional spin glasses with different spin dimensionality (Ising, XY, Heisenberg). The isothermal remanent magnetization is recorded vs. temperature after intermittent application of a weak magnetic field at a constant temperature $T_h$. We observe that in the case of the Heisenberg spin glasses, the equilibrated spin structure and the direction of the excess moment are recovered at $T_h$. The isothermal remanent magnetization thus reflects the directional character of the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction present in Heisenberg systems., Comment: tPHL2e style; 7 page, 3 figures

The temperature dependence of the magnetisation of a Cu(Mn) spin glass ($T_g$ $\approx$ 57 K) has been investigated using weak probing magnetic fields ($H$ = 0.5 or 0 Oe) and specific thermal protocols. The behaviour of the zero-field cooled, thermoremanent and isothermal remanent magnetisation on (re-)cooling the system from a temperature (40 K) where the system has been aged is investigated. It is observed that the measured magnetisation is formed by two parts: (i) a temperature- and observation time-dependent thermally activated relaxational part governed by the age- and temperature-dependent response function and the (latest) field change made at a lower temperature, superposed on (ii) a weakly temperature-dependent frozen-in part. Interestingly we observe that the spin configuration that is imprinted during an elongated halt in the cooling, if it is accompanied by a field induced magnetisation, also includes a unidirectional excess magnetisation that is recovered on returning to the ageing temperature., Comment: EPL style; 7 pages, 5 figures

We report on the synthesis and structural characterization of the magnetocaloric FeMnP$_{0.75}$Si$_{0.25}$ compound. Two types of samples (as quenched and annealed) were synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. We have found that minute changes in the degree of crystallographic order causes a large change in the magnetic properties. The annealed sample, with higher degree of order is antiferromagnetic with a zero net moment. The as-quenched sample has a net moment of 1.26 $\mu_B$/f.u. and ferrimagnetic-like behavior. Theoretical calculations give rather large values for the Fe and Mn magnetic moments, both when occupied on the tetrahedral and pyramidal lattice site. The largest being the Mn moment for the pyramidal site reaches values as high as 2.8 $\mu_B$/atom., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures, submitted to PRB

We demonstrate the use of Langevin spin dynamics for studying dynamical properties of an archetypical spin glass system. Simulations are performed on CuMn (20% Mn) where we study the relaxation that follows a sudden quench of the system to the low temperature phase. The system is modeled by a Heisenberg Hamiltonian where the Heisenberg interaction parameters are calculated by means of first-principles density functional theory. Simulations are performed by numerically solving the Langevin equations of motion for the atomic spins. It is shown that dynamics is governed, to a large degree, by the damping parameter in the equations of motion and the system size. For large damping and large system sizes we observe the typical aging regime., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures

The dynamical behavior of the magnetism of diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS) has been investigated by means of atomistic spin dynamics simulations. The conclusions drawn from the study are argued to be general for DMS systems in the low concentration limit, although all simulations are done for 5% Mn-doped GaAs with various concentrations of As antisite defects. The magnetization curve, $M(T)$, and the Curie temperature $T_C$ have been calculated, and are found to be in good correspondence to results from Monte Carlo simulations and experiments. Furthermore, equilibrium and non-equilibrium behavior of the magnetic pair correlation function have been extracted. The dynamics of DMS systems reveals a substantial short ranged magnetic order even at temperatures at or above the ordering temperature, with a non-vanishing pair correlation function extending up to several atomic shells. For the high As antisite concentrations the simulations show a short ranged anti-ferromagnetic coupling, and a weakened long ranged ferromagnetic coupling. For sufficiently large concentrations we do not observe any long ranged ferromagnetic correlation. A typical dynamical response shows that starting from a random orientation of moments, the spin-correlation develops very fast ($\sim$ 1ps) extending up to 15 atomic shells. Above $\sim$ 10 ps in the simulations, the pair correlation is observed to extend over some 40 atomic shells. The autocorrelation function has been calculated and compared with ferromagnets like bcc Fe and spin-glass materials. We find no evidence in our simulations for a spin-glass behaviour, for any concentration of As antisites. Instead the magnetic response is better described as slow dynamics, at least when compared to that of a regular ferromagnet like bcc Fe., Comment: 24 pages, 15 figures

While La0.7Ba0.3MnO3 is a ferromagnetic metal (TC = 340 K) with longrange ordering, Nd0.7Ba0.3MnO3 shows a transition around 150 K with a small increase in magnetization, but remains an insulator at all temperatures. Gd0.7Ba0.3MnO3 is non-magnetic and insulating at all temperatures. Low field dc magnetization and ac susceptibility measurements reveal the presence of a transition at around 150 K in Nd0.7Ba0.3MnO3, and a complex behavior with different ordering/freezing transitions at 62, 46 and 36 K in the case of Gd0.7Ba0.3MnO3, the last one being more prominent. The nature of the field dependence of the magnetization, combined with the slow magnetic relaxation, ageing and memory effects, suggests that Nd0.7Ba0.3MnO3 is a cluster glass below 150 K, a situation similar to that found for La_{1-x}SrxCoO3. Gd0.7Ba0.3MnO3, however, shows non-equilibrium dynamics characteristic of spin glasses, below 36 K. The difference in nature of the glassy behavior between Gd0.7Ba0.3MnO3 and Nd0.7Ba0.3MnO3 probably arises because of the larger disorder arising from the mismatch between the sizes of the A-site cations in the former. Our results on Nd0.7Ba0.3MnO3 and Gd0.7Ba0.3MnO3 suggest that the magnetic insulating states often reported for rare earth manganates of the type Ln1-xAxMnO3 (Ln = rare earth, A = alkaline earth) are likely to be associated with glassy magnetic behavior., Comment: 20 pages including figures

The magnetic lattice of mixed-valence Mn ions in La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$ is selectively diluted by partial substitution of Al or Ti for Mn. The ferromagnetic transition temperature $T_\mathrm{c}$ and the saturation magnetization $M_\mathrm{s}$ both decrease with substitution. By presenting the data in terms of selective dilution, $T_\mathrm{c}$ in the low-doping region is found to follow the relation $T_\mathrm{c}=T_\mathrm{c0}(1-n_\mathrm{p})$, where $T_\mathrm{c0}$ refers to the undiluted system and $n_\mathrm{p}$ is the dilution concentration defined as $n_\mathrm{p}=x/0.7$ or $n_\mathrm{p}=x/0.3$ for $M^\prime=$ Al or Ti, respectively. The scaling behavior of $T_\mathrm{c}(n_\mathrm{p})$ can be analyzed in the framework of the molecular-field theory and still valid when Mn is substituted by both Al and Ti. We present experimental results attempting to fingerprint nonanalyticities in the magnetization curves of spin glasses found by Katzgraber et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 257202 (2002)] via zero-temperature Monte Carlo simulations of the Edwards-Anderson Ising spin glass. Our results show that the singularities at zero temperature due to the reversal-field memory effect are washed out by the finite temperatures of the experiments. The data are analyzed via the first order reversal curve (FORC) magnetic fingerprinting method. The experimental results are supported by Monte Carlo simulations of the Edwards-Anderson Ising spin glass at finite temperatures which agree qualitatively very well with the experimental results. This suggests that the hysteretic behavior of real Ising spin-glass materials is well described by the Edwards-Anderson Ising spin glass. Magnetic and electric properties of a single crystal of La0.7Ca0.3CoO3 have been experimentally studied. The system attains a ferromagnetic spontaneous moment below 170 K and exhibits a re-entrant spin-glass phase below 100 K. In the ordered and the re-entrant phases, the low field magnetic properties are strongly direction dependent, showing considerably higher magnetization values perpendicular than parallel to the c-axis. Magnetic relaxation experiments show that both the ferromagnetic and the re-entrant spin-glass phases are non-equilibrium states, where the system exhibits magnetic aging characteristic of spin-glasses and disordered and frustrated ferromagnets., Comment: 21 pages including figures

Single crystals of La_1.8Sr_0.2CuO_4-\delta grown by the travelling solvent floating zone method have been ground to spherical shape for studies of anisotropic supercondcucting properties by SQUID magnetometry. Here we report on magnetization measurements parallel and perpendicular to the c-axis on two of these crystals. At low enough temperatures and fields the spheres are perfectly shielding (susceptibility -1.5 [SI]) and thus magnetically isotropic. The field dependence of the critical temperature, the transition width and the field expulsion well below T_c is qualitatively similar in both samples and is detailed in the paper. The anisotropy of the first critical field also shows similar behavior for the two crystals. Magnetization vs field experiments reveal a large difference in the hysteresis behavior along the two directions and an enhancement of the critical current density through the CuO_2-planes compared to the in-plane current density at higher fields.

In Phys. Rev. Lett. 91 167206 (2003), Sun et al. study memory effects in an interacting nanoparticle system with specific temperature and field protocols. The authors claim that the observed memory effects originate from spin-glass dynamics and that the results are consistent with the hierarchical picture of the spin-glass phase. In this comment, we argue their claims premature by demonstrating that all their experimental curves can be reproduced qualitatively using only a simplified model of isolated nanoparticles with a temperature dependent distribution of relaxation times., Comment: 1 page, 2 figures, slightly changed content, the parameters involved in Figs. 1 and 2 are changed a little for a semi-quantitative comparision with experimental results

Spin glasses are frustrated magnetic systems due to a random distribution of ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions. An experimental three dimensional (3d) spin glass exhibits a second order phase transition to a low temperature spin glass phase regardless of the spin dimensionality. In addition, the low temperature phase of Ising and Heisenberg spin glasses exhibits similar non-equilibrium dynamics and an infinitely slow approach towards a thermodynamic equilibrium state. There are however significant differences in the detailed character of the dynamics as to memory and rejuvenation phenomena and the influence of critical dynamics on the behaviour. In this article, some aspects of the non-equilibrium dynamics of an Ising and a Heisenberg spin glass are briefly reviewed and some comparisons are made to other glassy systems that exhibit magnetic non-equilibrium dynamics., Comment: To appear in J.
