1. Strong Nominal Semantics for Fixed-Point Constraints

Abstract

Nominal algebra includes $\alpha$-equality and freshness constraints on nominal terms endowed with a nominal set semantics that facilitates reasoning about languages with binders. Nominal unification is decidable and unitary, however, its extension with equational axioms such as Commutativity (which is finitary) is no longer finitary unless permutation fixed-point constraints are used. In this paper, we extend the notion of nominal algebra by introducing fixed-point constraints and provide a sound semantics using strong nominal sets. We show, by providing a counter-example, that the class of nominal sets is not a sound denotation for this extended nominal algebra. To recover soundness we propose two different formulations of nominal algebra, one obtained by restricting to a class of fixed-point contexts that are in direct correspondence with freshness contexts and another obtained by using a different set of derivation rules.

Abstract

The introduction of separation logic has led to the development of symbolic execution techniques and tools that are (functionally) compositional with function specifications that can be used in broader calling contexts. Many of the compositional symbolic execution tools developed in academia and industry have been grounded on a formal foundation, but either the function specifications are not validated with respect to the underlying separation logic of the theory, or there is a large gulf between the theory and the implementation of the tool. We introduce a formal compositional symbolic execution engine which creates and uses function specifications from an underlying separation logic and provides a sound theoretical foundation for, and indeed was partially inspired by, the Gillian symbolic execution platform. This is achieved by providing an axiomatic interface which describes the properties of the consume and produce operations used in the engine to update compositionally the symbolic state, for example when calling function specifications. This consume-produce technique is used by VeriFast, Viper, and Gillian, but has not been previously characterised independently of the tool. As part of our result, we give consume and produce operations inspired by the Gillian implementation that satisfy the properties described by our axiomatic interface. A surprising property is that our engine semantics provides a common foundation for both correctness and incorrectness reasoning, with the difference in the underlying engine only amounting to the choice to use satisfiability or validity. We use this property to extend the Gillian platform, which previously only supported correctness reasoning, with incorrectness reasoning and automatic true bug-finding using incorrectness bi-abduction.

Abstract

Detecting anomalies in a daily time series with a weekly pattern is a common task with a wide range of applications. A typical way of performing the task is by using decomposition method. However, the method often generates false positive results where a data point falls within its weekly range but is just off from its weekday position. We refer to this type of anomalies as "in-season anomalies", and propose a k-parameter approach to address the issue. The approach provides configurable extra tolerance for in-season anomalies to suppress misleading alerts while preserving real positives. It yields favorable result., Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

Termination is a central property in sequential programming models: a term is terminating if all its reduction sequences are finite. Termination is also important in concurrency in general, and for message-passing programs in particular. A variety of type systems that enforce termination by typing have been developed. In this paper, we rigorously compare several type systems for $\pi$-calculus processes from the unifying perspective of termination. Adopting session types as reference framework, we consider two different type systems: one follows Deng and Sangiorgi's weight-based approach; the other is Caires and Pfenning's Curry-Howard correspondence between linear logic and session types. Our technical results precisely connect these very different type systems, and shed light on the classes of client/server interactions they admit as correct.

34. Typed Non-determinism in Functional and Concurrent Calculi

Abstract

We study functional and concurrent calculi with non-determinism, along with type systems to control resources based on linearity. The interplay between non-determinism and linearity is delicate: careless handling of branches can discard resources meant to be used exactly once. Here we go beyond prior work by considering non-determinism in its standard sense: once a branch is selected, the rest are discarded. Our technical contributions are three-fold. First, we introduce a $\pi$-calculus with non-deterministic choice, governed by session types. Second, we introduce a resource $\lambda$-calculus, governed by intersection types, in which non-determinism concerns fetching of resources from bags. Finally, we connect our two typed non-deterministic calculi via a correct translation.

Abstract

Type-preserving translations are effective rigorous tools in the study of core programming calculi. In this paper, we develop a new typed translation that connects sequential and concurrent calculi; it is governed by type systems that control resource consumption. Our main contribution is the source language, a new resource $\lambda$-calculus with non-determinism and failures, dubbed \ulamf. In \ulamf, resources are split into linear and unrestricted; failures are explicit and arise from this distinction. We define a type system based on intersection types to control resources and fail-prone computation. The target language is \spi, an existing session-typed $\pi$-calculus that results from a Curry-Howard correspondence between linear logic and session types. Our typed translation subsumes our prior work; interestingly, it treats unrestricted resources in \lamrfailunres as client-server session behaviours in \spi., Comment: 24 pages, plus appendices. 44. A Subexponential View of Domains in Session Types

Abstract

Linear logic (LL) has inspired the design of many computational systems, offering reasoning techniques built on top of its meta-theory. Since its inception, several connections between concurrent systems and LL have emerged from different perspectives. In the last decade, the seminal work of Caires and Pfenning showed that formulas in LL can be interpreted as session types and processes in the pi-calculus as proof terms. This leads to a Curry-Howard interpretation where proof reductions in the cut-elimination procedure correspond to process reductions/interactions. The subexponentials in LL have also played an important role in concurrent systems since they can be interpreted in different ways, including timed, spatial and even epistemic modalities in distributed systems. In this paper we address the question: What is the meaning of the subexponentials from the point of view of a session type interpretation? Our answer is a pi-like process calculus where agents reside in locations/sites and they make it explicit how the communication among the different sites should happen. Abstract

We present a new method to obtain the first-order temporal correlation function, $g^{(1)} (\tau)$, of the light scattered by an assembly of point-like quantum scatterers, or equivalently its spectral power distribution. This new method is based on the mirror-assisted backscattering interferometric setup. The contrast of its angular fringes was already linked in the past to the convolution of $g^{(1)} (\tau)$ for different Rabi frequencies taking into account the incoming spatial intensity profile of the probe beam, but we show here that by simply adding a half waveplate to the interferometer in a specific configuration, the fringe contrast becomes $g^{(1)} (\tau)$ of the light scattered by atoms, which are now all subjected to the same laser intensity. This new method has direct application to obtain the saturated spectrum of quantum systems. We discuss some non-trivial aspects of this interferometric setup, and propose an analogy with a double Mach-Zehnder interferometer.

Abstract

We study encodings of the lambda-calculus into the pi-calculus in the unexplored case of calculi with non-determinism and failures. On the sequential side, we consider lambdafail, a new non-deterministic calculus in which intersection types control resources (terms); on the concurrent side, we consider spi, a pi-calculus in which non-determinism and failure rest upon a Curry-Howard correspondence between linear logic and session types. We present a typed encoding of lambdafail into spi and establish its correctness. Our encoding precisely explains the interplay of non-deterministic and fail-prone evaluation in lambdafail via typed processes in spi. In particular, it shows how failures in sequential evaluation (absence/excess of resources) can be neatly codified as interaction protocols.
