Search

A catalyst is a substance that enables otherwise impossible transformations between states of a system, without being consumed in the process. In this work, we apply the notion of catalysts to many-body quantum physics. In particular, we construct catalysts that enable transformations between different symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases of matter using symmetric finite-depth quantum circuits. We discover a wide variety of catalysts, including GHZ-like states which spontaneously break the symmetry, gapless states with critical correlations, topological orders with symmetry fractionalization, and spin-glass states. These catalysts are all united under a single framework which has close connections to the theory of quantum anomalies, and we use this connection to put strong constraints on possible pure- and mixed-state catalysts. We also show how the catalyst approach leads to new insights into the structure of certain phases of matter, and to new methods to efficiently prepare SPT phases with long-range interactions or projective measurements.

We propose new physically reasonable systems capable of avoiding ergodicity at infinite time in the thermodynamic limit, even with generic perturbations and when coupled to a heat bath. In two dimensions, the rainbow loop soup has (stretched) exponentially numerous absolutely stable nonergodic states with diverging energy but vanishing energy density. In three dimensions the rainbow membrane soup has (stretched) exponentially numerous nonergodic states with diverging energy barriers, leading to infinite-time robust ergodicity breaking that even survives coupling to a nonzero temperature heat bath. We describe our results in the language of exact emergent symmetries and demonstrate how the systems avoid common instabilities. We introduce a framework that allows for the exact analytic treatment of quantum dynamics subject to coherent noise. The noise is modeled via unitary evolution under a Hamiltonian drawn from a random-matrix ensemble for arbitrary Hilbert-space dimension $N$. While the methods we develop apply to generic such ensembles with a notion of rotation invariance, we focus largely on the Gaussian unitary ensemble (GUE). Averaging over the ensemble of ''noisy'' Hamiltonians produces an effective quantum channel, the properties of which are analytically calculable and determined by the spectral form factors of the relevant ensemble. We compute spectral form factors of the GUE exactly for any finite $N$, along with the corresponding GUE quantum channel, and its variance. Key advantages of our approach include the ability to access exact analytic results for any $N$ and the ability to tune to the noise-free limit (in contrast, e.g., to the Haar ensemble), and analytic access to moments beyond the variance. We also highlight some unusual features of the GUE channel, including the nonmonotonicity of the coefficients of various operators as a function of noise strength and the failure to saturate the Haar-random limit, even with infinite noise strength., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures

The 4d-electron trimer lattice Ba4Nb1-xRu3+xO12 is believed to feature a heavy spinon Fermi surface that underpins both a quantum spin liquid (QSL) and an adjacent heavy-fermion strange metal (HFSM) phase, depending on Nb content. Itinerant spinons act as heat carriers that render the charge-insulating QSL a much better thermal conductor than the HFSM [1]. We find application of magnetic fields up to 14 T below 150 mK induces an abrupt rise in the heat capacity by as much as 5000% and breaks the signature linear temperature dependences of the heat capacity of both phases. In contrast, the AC magnetic susceptibility and the electrical resistivity are insensitive to applied fields up to 14 T over the same milli-Kelvin temperature range, whereas field depresses the thermal conductivity by up to 40% at temperatures below 4 K. These complex phenomena imply applied magnetic field drastically alters the spinons at low temperatures and demand new physics: We propose the steep rise in the heat capacity (and thus entropy) at milli-Kelvin temperatures and strong magnetic fields announces a field-induced localization of spinons., Comment: 4 figures

We introduce a large class of models exhibiting robust ergodicity breaking in quantum dynamics. Our work is inspired by recent discussions of "topologically robust Hilbert space fragmentation," but massively generalizes in two directions: firstly from states describable as "loop-soups" to a broader class of states reminiscent of string-nets and sponges, and secondly from models restricted to square or cubic lattices, to models defined on arbitrary lattices (and even arbitrary graphs without translation invariance). Our constructions leverage a recently proposed group-theory framework [PRX 14, 021034 (2024)], and identify a host of new phenomena arising from the interplay of "group-model dynamics" and lattice structure. We prove the existence of extensive many-body Hamiltonians with few-body interactions and a many-body mobility edge: all eigenstates below a nonzero energy density are localized in an exponentially small fraction of "energetically allowed configurations" within Hilbert space. Our construction is based on quantum perturbations to a classical low-density parity check code. Many-body quantum games provide a natural perspective on phases of matter in quantum hardware, crisply relating the quantum correlations inherent in phases of matter to the securing of quantum advantage at a device-oriented task. In this paper we introduce a family of multiplayer quantum games for which topologically ordered phases of matter are a resource yielding quantum advantage. Unlike previous examples, quantum advantage persists away from the exactly solvable point and is robust to arbitrary local perturbations, irrespective of system size. We demonstrate this robustness experimentally on Quantinuum's H1-1 quantum computer by playing the game with a continuous family of randomly deformed toric code states that can be created with constant-depth circuits leveraging mid-circuit measurements and unitary feedback. We are thus able to tune through a topological phase transition - witnessed by the loss of robust quantum advantage - on currently available quantum hardware. This behavior is contrasted with an analogous family of deformed GHZ states, for which arbitrarily weak local perturbations destroy quantum advantage in the thermodynamic limit. Chiral orbital currents (COC) underpin a novel colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) in ferrimagnetic Mn3Si2Te6 [1]. Here we report the Hall effect in the COC state which exhibits the following unprecedented features: (1) A sharp, current-sensitive peak in the magnetic field dependence of the Hall resistivity; (2) An unusually large Hall angle reaching up to 0.15 (comparable to the highest values yet reported); and (3) A current-sensitive scaling relation between the Hall conductivity sigma_xy and the longitudinal conductivity sigma_xx, namely, sigma_xy ~ sigma_xx^alpha with alpha ranging between 3 and 5, which is both sensitive to external current and exceptionally large compared to alpha < 2 typical of most solids. These anomalies point to a giant, current-sensitive Hall effect that is unique to the COC state. We argue that a magnetic field induced by the fully developed COC combines with the applied magnetic field to exert the greatly enhanced transverse force on charge carriers, which dictates the novel Hall responses. The COC Hall effect is unique, as it is generated and controlled via the interaction between intrinsic COC and applied external currents, which leads to novel transport phenomena of fundamental and technological significance and requires new physics for explanation., Comment: 4 figures

We present experimental evidence that a heavy Fermi surface consisting of itinerant, charge-neutral spinons underpins both heavy-fermion-strange-metal (without f electrons) and quantum-spin-liquid states in the 4d-electron trimer lattice, Ba4Nb1-xRu3+xO12 (|x| < 0.20). These two exotic states both exhibit an extraordinarily large entropy, a linear heat capacity extending into the milli-Kelvin regime, a linear thermal conductivity at low temperatures, and separation of charges and spins. Furthermore, the insulating spin liquid is a much better thermal conductor than the heavy-fermion-strange-metal that separately is observed to strongly violate the Wiedemann-Franz law. We propose that at the heart of this 4d system is a universal, heavy spinon Fermi surface that provides a unified framework for explaining the exotic phenomena observed throughout the entire series. We present a set of generalized quantum loop models which provably exhibit topologically stable ergodicity breaking. These results hold for both periodic and open boundary conditions, and derive from a one-form symmetry (notably not being restricted to sectors of extremal one-form charge). We identify simple models in which this one-form symmetry can be emergent, giving rise to the aforementioned ergodicity breaking as an exponentially long-lived prethermal phenomenon. We unveil a web of dualities that connects these models, in certain limits, to models that have previously been discussed in the literature. We examine the hydrodynamics of systems with spontaneously broken multipolar symmetries using a systematic effective field theory. We focus on the simplest non-trivial setting: a system with charge and dipole symmetry, but without momentum conservation. When no symmetries are broken, our formalism reproduces the quartic subdiffusion ($\omega \sim -i k^4$) characteristic of `fracton hydrodynamics' with conserved dipole moment. Our formalism also captures spontaneous breaking of charge and/or dipole symmetry. When charge symmetry is spontaneously broken, the hydrodynamic modes are quadratically propagating and quartically relaxing ($\omega \sim \pm k^2 - ik^4$). When the dipole symmetry is spontaneously broken but the charge symmetry is preserved, then we find quadratically relaxing (diffusive) transverse modes, plus another mode which depending on parameters may be either purely diffusive ($\omega \sim -i k^2$) or quadratically propagating and quadratically relaxing ($\omega \sim \pm k^2 -i k^2$). Our work provides concrete predictions that may be tested in near-term cold atom experiments, and also lays out a general framework that may be applied to study systems with spontaneously broken multipolar symmetries., Comment: 4+2+epsilon pages, 3 figures

Multipole symmetries are of interest in multiple contexts, from the study of fracton phases, to nonergodic quantum dynamics, to the exploration of new hydrodynamic universality classes. However, prior explorations have focused on continuum systems or hypercubic lattices. In this work, we systematically explore multipole symmetries on arbitrary crystal lattices. We explain how, given a crystal structure (specified by a space group and the occupied Wyckoff positions), one may systematically construct all consistent multipole groups. We focus on two-dimensional crystal structures for simplicity, although our methods are general and extend straightforwardly to three dimensions. We classify the possible multipole groups on all two-dimensional Bravais lattices, and on the kagome and breathing kagome crystal structures to illustrate the procedure on general crystal lattices. Using Wyckoff positions, we provide an in-principle classification of all possible multipole groups in any space group. We explain how, given a valid multipole group, one may construct an effective Hamiltonian and a low-energy field theory. We then explore the physical consequences, beginning by generalizing certain results originally obtained on hypercubic lattices to arbitrary crystal structures. Next, we identify two seemingly novel phenomena, including an emergent, robust subsystem symmetry on the triangular lattice, and an exact multipolar symmetry on the breathing kagome lattice that does not include conservation of charge (monopole), but instead conserves a vector charge. This makes clear that there is new physics to be found by exploring the consequences of multipolar symmetries on arbitrary lattices, and this work provides the map for the exploration thereof, as well as guiding the search for emergent multipolar symmetries and the attendant exotic phenomena in real materials based on nonhypercubic lattices., Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures

Whether a given target state can be prepared by starting with a simple product state and acting with a finite-depth quantum circuit is a key question in condensed matter physics and quantum information science. It underpins classifications of topological phases, as well as the understanding of topological quantum codes, and has obvious relevance for device implementations. Traditionally, this question assumes that the quantum circuit is made up of unitary gates that are geometrically local. Inspired by the advent of noisy intermediate-scale quantum devices, we reconsider this question with $k$-local gates, i.e. gates that act on no more than $k$ degrees of freedom, but are not restricted to be geometrically local. First, we construct explicit finite-depth circuits of symmetric $k$-local gates which create symmetry-protected topological (SPT) states from an initial a product state. Our construction applies both to SPT states protected by global symmetries and subsystem symmetries, but not to those with higher-form symmetries, which we conjecture remain nontrivial. Next, we show how to implement arbitrary translationally invariant quantum cellular automata (QCA) in any dimension using finite-depth circuits of $k$-local gates. These results imply that the topological classifications of SPT phases and QCA both collapse to a single trivial phase in the presence of $k$-local interactions. We furthermore argue that SPT phases are fragile to generic $k$-local symmetric perturbations. We conclude by discussing the implications for other phases, such as fracton phases, and surveying future directions. We explore universality and phases of matter in hybrid quantum dynamics combining chaotic time evolution and projective measurements. We develop a unitary representation of measurements based on the Stinespring Theorem, which we crucially identify with the time evolution of the system and measurement apparatus, affording significant technical advantages and conceptual insight into hybrid dynamics. We diagnose spectral properties in the presence of measurements for the first time, along with standard, experimentally tractable probes of phase structure, finding no nontrivial effects due to measurements in the absence of feedback. We also establish that nonlinearity in the density matrix is neither sufficient nor necessary to see a transition, and instead identify utilization of the measurement outcomes (i.e., ``feedback'') as the crucial ingredient. After reviewing the definition of a phase of matter, we identify nontrivial orders in adaptive hybrid dynamics -- in which measurement outcomes determine future unitary gates -- finding a genuine measurement-induced absorbing-state phase transition in an adaptive quantum East model. We present a new route to ergodicity breaking via Hilbert space fragmentation that displays an unprecedented level of robustness. Our construction relies on a single emergent (prethermal) conservation law. In the limit when the conservation law is exact, we prove the emergence of Hilbert space fragmentation with an exponential number of frozen configurations. We further prove that every frozen configuration is absolutely stable to arbitrary perturbations, to all finite orders in perturbation theory. In particular, our proof is not limited to symmetric perturbations, or to perturbations with compact support, but also applies to perturbations with long-range tails, and even to arbitrary geometrically nonlocal $k$-body perturbations, as long as $k/L \rightarrow 0$ in the thermodynamic limit, where $L$ is linear system size. Two-dimensional coherent spectroscopy (2DCS) is a nonlinear spectroscopy technique capable of identifying whether apparent continua in linear response are made out of multiplets of sharp deconfined quasiparticles. This makes it a potent tool for experimental identification of fractionalized phases. Previous discussions have focused on limits where the quasiparticles in question are infinitely long lived. In this manuscript we discuss 2DCS in the regime where the fractionalized quasiparticles can themselves decay. We introduce a powerful path integral based approach, whereby the computation of nonlinear susceptibilities reduces to an efficient exercise in diagrammatic perturbation theory. We apply this method to compute the 2DCS response of the one-dimensional transverse field Ising model, in the presence of integrability-breaking perturbations. We discuss aspects of the self-energy of the fractionalized quasiparticles that may be extracted via 2DCS, such as the momentum-dependent decay rate., Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures

Local moment formation is ubiquitous in disordered semiconductors such as Si:P, where it is observed both in the metallic and the insulating regimes. Here, we focus on local moment behavior in disordered insulators, which arises from short-ranged, repulsive electron-electron interactions. Using density matrix renormalization group and strong-disorder renormalization group methods, we study paradigmatic models of interacting insulators: one dimensional Hubbard chains with quenched randomness. In chains with either random fermion hoppings or random chemical potentials, both at and away from half-filling, we find exponential decay of charge and fermion 2-point correlations but power-law decay of spin correlations that are indicative of the random singlet phase. The numerical results can be understood qualitatively by appealing to the large-interaction limit of the Hubbard chain, in which a remarkably simple picture emerges.

We extend recent work on hydrodynamics with global multipolar symmetries -- known as "fracton hydrodynamics" -- to systems in which the multipolar symmetries are gauged. We refer to the latter as "fracton magnetohydrodynamics", in analogy to conventional magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), which governs systems with gauged charge conservation. We show that fracton MHD arises naturally from higher-rank Maxwell's equations and in systems with one-form symmetries obeying certain constraints; while we focus on "minimal" higher-rank generalizations of MHD that realize diffusion, our methods may also be used to identify other, more exotic hydrodynamic theories (e.g., with magnetic subdiffusion). In contrast to semi-microscopic derivations of MHD, our approach elucidates the origin of the hydrodynamic modes by identifying the corresponding higher-form symmetries. I discuss the quantum dynamics of strongly disordered quantum systems with critically long range interactions, decaying as $1/r^{2d}$ in $d$ spatial dimensions. I argue that, contrary to expectations, localization in such systems is stable at low orders in perturbation theory, giving rise to an unusual `critically many body localized regime.' I discuss the phenomenology of this critical MBL regime, which includes distinctive signatures in entanglement, charge statistics, noise, and transport. Experimentally, such a critically localized regime can be realized in three dimensional systems with Van der Waals interactions, such as Rydberg atoms, and in one dimensional systems with $1/r^2$ interactions, such as trapped ions. I estimate timescales on which high order perturbative and non-perturbative (avalanche) phenomena may destabilize this critically MBL regime, and conclude that the avalanche sets the limiting timescale, in the limit of strong disorder / weak interactions.

We discuss quantum dynamics in the transverse field Ising model in two spatial dimensions. We show that, up to a prethermal timescale, which we quantify, the Hilbert space 'shatters' into dynamically disconnected subsectors. We identify this shattering as originating from the interplay of a $\mathrm{U}(1)$ conservation law and a one-form $\mathbb{Z}_2$ constraint. We show that the number of dynamically disconnected sectors is exponential in system volume, and includes a subspace exponential in system volume within which the dynamics is exactly localized, even in the absence of quenched disorder. Depending on the emergent sector in which we work, the shattering can be weak (such that typical initial conditions thermalize with respect to their emergent symmetry sector), or strong (such that typical initial conditions exhibit localized dynamics). We present analytical and numerical evidence that a first order-like 'freezing transition' between weak and strong shattering occurs as a function of the symmetry sector, in a non-standard thermodynamic limit. The origin of the pseudogap in many strongly correlated materials has been a longstanding puzzle. Here, we uncover which many-body interactions underlie the pseudogap in quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) material (TaSe4)2I by weak photo-excitation of the material to partially melt the ground state order and thereby reveal the underlying states in the gap. We observe the appearance of both dispersive and flat bands by using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We assign the dispersive band to a single-particle bare band, while the flat band to a collection of single-polaron sub-bands. Our results provide direct experimental evidence that many-body interactions among small Holstein polarons i.e., the formation of bipolarons, are primarily responsible for the pseudogap in (TaSe4)2I. Recent theoretical studies of the Holstein model support the presence of such a bipolaron-to-polaron crossover. We also observe dramatically different relaxation times for the excited in-gap states in (TaSe4)2I (~600 fs) compared with another quasi-1D material Rb0.3MoO3 (~60 fs), which provides a new method for distinguishing between pseudogaps induced by polaronic or Luttinger-liquid many-body interactions.

Multipole symmetries are of interest both as a window on fracton physics and as a crucial ingredient in realizing new universality classes for quantum dynamics. Here we address the question of whether and when multipole symmetries can be spontaneously broken, both in thermal equilibrium and at zero temperature. We derive generalized Mermin-Wagner arguments for the total or partial breaking of multipolar symmetry groups and generalized Imry-Ma arguments for the robustness of such multipolar symmetry breaking to disorder. We present both general results and explicit examples. We show that the simplest universality classes of fracton hydrodynamics in more than one spatial dimension, including isotropic theories of charge and dipole conservation, can exhibit hidden "quasiconservation laws", in which certain higher multipole moments can only decay due to dangerously irrelevant corrections to hydrodynamics. We present two simple examples of this phenomenon. Firstly, an isotropic dipole-conserving fluid in the infinite plane conserves an infinite number of "harmonic multipole charges" within linear response; we calculate the decay or growth of these charges due to dangerously irrelevant nonlinearities. Secondly, we consider a model with $xy$ and $x^2-y^2$ quadrupole conservation, in addition to dipole conservation, which is described by isotropic fourth-order subdiffusion, yet has dangerously irrelevant sixth-order corrections necessary to relax the harmonic multipole charges. We confirm our predictions for the anomalously slow decay of the harmonic conserved charges in each setting by using numerical simulations, both of the nonlinear hydrodynamic differential equations, and in quantum automaton circuits on a square lattice., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures; v2 is published version

Motivated by recent experiments on the kagome metals $A\text{V}_3\text{Sb}_5$ with $A=\text{K}$, $\text{Rb}$, and $\text{Cs}$, which show a charge density wave (CDW) at $\sim100$ K and the superconductivity at $\sim1$ K, we explore the onset of the superconductivity, taking the perspective that it descends from a parent CDW. We argue that viewing the superconductivity as a weak-coupling instability of a reconstructed (by the CDW) Fermi surface naturally explains the experimentally observed 'multidome' nonmonotonic dependence on pressure, with the 'peaks' in the superconducting critical temperature being associated with the Van Hove singularities of the reconstructed Fermi surface. This 'parent-child relationship' also naturally explains the large separation of energy scales between the superconductivity and the CDW. We discuss different possible pairing mechanisms and speculate that the CDW or reconstructed Pomeranchuk fluctuations may mediate the pairing interaction., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures. v3: Published version

Fracton phases feature elementary excitations with fractionalized mobility and are exciting interest from multiple areas of theoretical physics. However, the most exotic 'type-II' fracton phases, like the Haah codes, currently have no known experimental diagnostics. Here, we explain how type-II fracton phases with gapless gauge modes, such as the $\mathrm{U}(1)$ Haah code, may be identified experimentally. Our analysis makes use of the 'multipole gauge theory' description of type-II fracton phases, which exhibits ultraviolet-infrared (UV-IR) mixing. We show that neutron scattering experiments on gapless type-II fracton phases should generically exhibit exotic pinch points in the structure factor, with distinctive anisotropic contours as a direct consequence of UV-IR mixing. This characteristic pinch point structure provides a clean diagnostic of type-II fracton phases. We investigate how the real and imaginary charge density waves interplay at the Van Hove singularity on the hexagonal lattices. A phenomenological analysis indicates the formation of $3Q$ complex orders at all three nesting momenta. Under a total phase condition, unequal phases at the three momenta break the rotation symmetry generally. The $3Q$ complex orders constitute a rich Haldane-model phase diagram. When effective time-reversal symmetries arise under 1-site translations, the Dirac semimetals are protected. The breakdown of these symmetries gaps the Dirac points and leads to the trivial and Chern insulator phases. These phases are deformations of purely real and imaginary orders, which exhibit trivial site and/or bond density and chiral flux orders, respectively. The exotic single-Dirac-point semimetals also appear along the gapless phase boundary. We further show that the theoretical model offers transparent interpretations of experimental observations in the kagome metals $\text{AV}_3\text{Sb}_5$ with $\text{A}=\text{K},\text{Rb},\text{Cs}$. The topological charge density waves may be identified with the complex orders in the Chern insulator phase. Meanwhile, the lower-temperature symmetry-breaking phenomena may be interpreted as the secondary orders from the complex order ground states. Whether self correcting quantum memories can exist at non-zero temperature in a physically reasonable setting remains a great open problem. It has recently been argued [1] that symmetry protected topological (SPT) systems in three space dimensions subject to a strong constraint -- that the quantum dynamics respect a 1-form symmetry -- realize such a quantum memory. We illustrate how this works in Walker-Wang codes, which provide a specific realization of these desiderata. In this setting we show that it is sufficient for the 1-form symmetry to be enforced on a sub-volume of the system which is measure zero in the thermodynamic limit. This strongly suggests that the `SPT' character of the state is not essential. We confirm this by constructing an explicit example with a trivial (paramagnetic) bulk that realizes a self correcting quantum memory. We therefore show that the enforcement of a 1-form symmetry on a measure zero sub-volume of a three dimensional system can be sufficient to stabilize a self correcting quantum memory at non-zero temperature., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

When a strongly disordered system of interacting quantum dipoles is locally excited, the excitation relaxes on some (potentially very long) timescale. We analyze this relaxation process, both for electron glasses with strong Coulomb interactions - in which particle-hole dipoles are emergent excitations - and for systems (e.g., quantum magnets or ultracold dipolar molecules) made up of microscopic dipoles. We consider both energy relaxation rates ($T_1$ times) and dephasing rates ($T_2$ times), and their dependence on frequency, temperature, and polarization. Systems in both two and three dimensions are considered, along with the dimensional crossover in quasi-two dimensional geometries. A rich set of scaling laws is found.

We demonstrate that the one-dimensional helical Majorana edges of two-dimensional time-reversal symmetric topological superconductors (class DIII) can become gapless and insulating by a combination of random edge velocity and interaction. Such a gapless insulating edge breaks time-reversal symmetry inhomogeneously, and the local symmetry broken regions can be regarded as static mass potentials or dynamical Ising spins. In both limits, we find that such glassy Majorana edges are generically exponentially localized and trap Majorana zero modes. Interestingly, for a statistically time-reversal symmetric edge, the low-energy theory can be mapped to a Dyson model at zero energy, manifesting a diverging density of states and exhibiting marginal localization (i.e., a diverging localization length). Although the ballistic edge state transport is absent, the localized Majorana zero modes reflect the nontrivial topology in the bulk. We study the dynamical behaviour of ultracold fermionic atoms loaded into an optical lattice under the presence of an effective magnetic flux, induced by spin-orbit coupled laser driving. At half filling, the resulting system can emulate a variety of iconic spin-1/2 models such as an Ising model, an XY model, a generic XXZ model with arbitrary anisotropy, or a collective one-axis twisting model. The validity of these different spin models is examined across the parameter space of flux and driving strength. In addition, there is a parameter regime where the system exhibits chiral, persistent features in the long-time dynamics. We explain how gapped quantum spin liquids, both conventional and 'fractonic', may be unambiguously diagnosed experimentally using the technique of multidimensional coherent spectroscopy. 'Conventional' gapped quantum spin liquids (e.g. $Z_2$ spin liquid) do not have clear signatures in linear response, but do have clear fingerprints in non-linear response, accessible through the already existing experimental technique of two dimensional coherent spectroscopy. Type I fracton phases (e.g. X-cube) are (surprisingly) even easier to distinguish, with strongly suggestive features even in linear response, and unambiguous signatures in non-linear response. Subdiffusion is a generic feature of chaotic many-body dynamics with multipole conservation laws and subsystem symmetries. We numerically study this subdiffusive dynamics, using quantum automaton random unitary circuits, in a broad range of models including one dimensional models with dipole and quadrupole conservation, two dimensional models with dipole conservation, and two dimensional models with subsystem symmetry on the triangular lattice. We analyze the weak-coupling instabilities that may arise when multiple high-order Van Hove points are present inside the Brillouin zone. The model we consider is inspired by twisted bilayer graphene, although the analysis should be more generally applicable. We employ a parquet renormalization group analysis to identify the leading weak-coupling instabilities, supplemented with a Ginzburg-Landau treatment to resolve any degeneracies. Hence we identify the leading instabilities that can occur from weak repulsion with the power-law divergent density of states. Five correlated phases are uncovered along distinct stable fixed trajectories, including $s$-wave ferromagnetism, $p$-wave chiral/helical superconductivity, $d$-wave chiral superconductivity, $f$-wave valley-polarized order, and $p$-wave polar valley-polarized order. We develop a systematic effective field theory of hydrodynamics for many-body systems on the lattice with global continuous non-Abelian symmetries. Models with continuous non-Abelian symmetries are ubiquitous in physics, arising in diverse settings ranging from hot nuclear matter to cold atomic gases and quantum spin chains. In every dimension and for every flavor symmetry group, the low energy theory is a set of coupled noisy diffusion equations. Independence of the physics on the choice of canonical or microcanonical ensemble is manifest in our hydrodynamic expansion, even though the ensemble choice causes an apparent shift in quasinormal mode spectra. We use our formalism to explain why flavor symmetry is qualitatively different from hydrodynamics with other non-Abelian conservation laws, including angular momentum and charge multipoles. As a significant application of our framework, we study spin and energy diffusion in classical one-dimensional SU(2)-invariant spin chains, including the Heisenberg model along with multiple generalizations. We argue based on both numerical simulations and our effective field theory framework that non-integrable spin chains on a lattice exhibit conventional spin diffusion, in contrast to some recent predictions that diffusion constants grow logarithmically at late times. A longstanding open problem in condensed matter physics is whether or not a strongly disordered interacting insulator can be mapped to a system of effectively non-interacting localized excitations. We investigate this issue on the insulating side of the 3D metal-insulator transition (MIT) in phosphorus doped silicon using the new technique of terahertz two dimensional coherent spectroscopy. Despite the intrinsically disordered nature of these materials, we observe coherent excitations and strong photon echoes that provide us with a powerful method for the study of their decay processes. We extract the first measurements of energy relaxation ($T_1$) and decoherence ($T_2$) times close to the MIT in this classic system. We observe that (i) both relaxation rates are linear in excitation frequency with a slope close to unity, (ii) the energy relaxation timescale $T_1$ counterintuitively increases with increasing temperature and (iii) the coherence relaxation timescale $T_2$ has little temperature dependence between 5 K and 25 K, but counterintuitively increases as the material is doped towards the MIT. We argue that these features imply that (a) the system behaves as a well isolated electronic system on the timescales of interest, and (b) relaxation is controlled by electron-electron interactions. We discuss the potential relaxation channels that may explain the behavior. We introduce new classes of hydrodynamic theories inspired by the recently discovered fracton phases of quantum matter. Fracton phases are characterized by elementary excitations (fractons) with restricted mobility. The hydrodynamic theories we introduce describe thermalization in systems with fracton-like mobility constraints, including fluids where charge and dipole moment are both locally conserved, and fluids where charge is conserved along every line or plane of a lattice. Each of these fluids is subdiffusive, and constitutes a new universality class of hydrodynamic behavior. There are infinitely many such classes, each with distinct subdiffusive exponents, all of which are captured by our formalism. Our framework naturally explains recent results on dynamics with constrained quantum circuits, as well as recent experiments with ultracold atoms in tilted optical lattices. We explore quantum dynamics in Floquet many-body systems with local conservation laws in one spatial dimension, focusing on sectors of the Hilbert space which are highly polarized. We numerically compare the predicted charge diffusion constants and quantum butterfly velocity of operator growth between models of chaotic Floquet dynamics (with discrete spacetime translation invariance) and random unitary circuits which vary both in space and time. We find that for small but finite polarization per length (in the thermodynamic limit), the random unitary circuit correctly predicts the scaling of the butterfly velocity but incorrectly predicts the scaling of the diffusion constant. We argue that this is a consequence of quantum coherence on short time scales. Our work clarifies the settings in which random unitary circuits provide correct physical predictions for non-random chaotic systems, and sheds light into the origin of the slow down of the butterfly effect in highly polarized systems or at low temperature., Comment: 9 + 4 pages; 7 figures; v2: published version

Measurement and control of magnetic order and correlations in real time is a rapidly developing scientific area relevant for magnetic memory and spintronics [1,15]. In these experiments an ultra-short laser pulse (pump) is first absorbed by excitations carrying electric dipole moment. These then give their energy to the magnetic subsystem monitored by a time-resolved probe. A lot of progress has been made in investigations of ferromagnets but antiferromagnets are more challenging. Here we introduce time-resolved two-magnon Raman scattering as a novel real time probe of magnetic correlations especially well-suited for antiferromagnets. Its application to the antiferromagnetic charge transfer insulator YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ revealed rapid demagnetization within 90fs of photoexcitation. The relaxation back to thermal equilibrium is characterized by much slower timescales. We interpret these results in terms of slow relaxation of the charge sector and rapid equilibration of the magnetic sector to a prethermal state characterized by parameters that change slowly as the charge sector relaxes.

We study the quantum dynamics of a simple translation invariant, center-of-mass (CoM) preserving model of interacting fermions in one dimension (1D), which arises in multiple experimentally realizable contexts. We show that this model naturally displays the phenomenology associated with fractonic systems, wherein single charges can only move by emitting dipoles. This allows us to demonstrate the rich Krylov fractured structure of this model, whose Hilbert space shatters into exponentially many dynamically disconnected subspaces. Focusing on exponentially large Krylov subspaces, we show that these can be either be integrable or non-integrable, thereby establishing the notion of Krylov-restricted thermalization. We analytically find a tower of integrable Krylov subspaces of this Hamiltonian, all of which map onto spin-1/2 XX models of various system sizes. We also discuss the physics of the non-integrable subspaces, where we show evidence for weak Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis (ETH) restricted to each non-integrable Krylov subspace. Further, we show that constraints in some of the thermal Krylov subspaces cause the long-time expectation values of local operators to deviate from behavior typically expected from translation-invariant systems. Finally, we show using a Schrieffer-Wolff transformation that such models naturally appear as effective Hamiltonians in the large electric field limit of the interacting Wannier-Stark problem, and comment on connections of our work with the phenomenon of Bloch many-body localization., Comment: 29 pages, 3 figures

We show how a finite number of conservation laws can globally `shatter' Hilbert space into exponentially many dynamically disconnected subsectors, leading to an unexpected dynamics with features reminiscent of both many body localization and quantum scars. A crisp example of this phenomenon is provided by a `fractonic' model of quantum dynamics constrained to conserve both charge and dipole moment. We show how the Hilbert space of the fractonic model dynamically fractures into disconnected emergent subsectors within a particular charge and dipole symmetry sector. This shattering can occur in arbitrary spatial dimensions. A large number of the emergent subsectors, exponentially many in system volume, have dimension one and exhibit strictly localized quantum dynamics---even in the absence of spatial disorder and in the presence of temporal noise. Other emergent subsectors display non-trivial dynamics and may be constructed by embedding finite sized non-trivial blocks into the localized subspace. While `fractonic' models provide a particularly clean realization, the shattering phenomenon is more general, as we discuss. We also discuss how the key phenomena may be readily observed in near term ultracold atom experiments. In experimental realizations, the conservation laws are approximate rather than exact, so the localization only survives up to a prethermal timescale that we estimate. The boundary of a topological insulator (TI) hosts an anomaly restricting its possible phases: e.g. 3D strong and weak TIs maintain surface conductivity at any disorder if symmetry is preserved on-average, at least when electron interactions on the surface are weak. However the interplay of strong interactions and disorder with the boundary anomaly has not yet been theoretically addressed. Here we study this combination for the edge of a 2D TI and the surface of a 3D weak TI, showing how it can lead to an "Anomalous Many Body Localized" (AMBL) phase that preserves the anomaly. We discuss how the anomalous Kramers parity switching with pi flux arises in the bosonized theory of the localized helical state. The anomaly can be probed in localized boundaries by electrostatically sensing nonlinear hopping transport with e/2 shot noise. Our AMBL construction in 3D weak TIs fails for 3D strong TIs, suggesting that their anomaly restrictions are distinguished by strong interactions., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

We introduce quantum circuits in two and three spatial dimensions which are classically simulable, despite producing a high degree of operator entanglement. We provide a partial characterization of these "automaton" quantum circuits, and use them to study operator growth, information spreading, and local charge relaxation in quantum dynamics with subsystem symmetries, which we define as overlapping symmetries that act on lower-dimensional submanifolds. With these symmetries, we discover the anomalous subdiffusion of conserved charges; that is, the charges spread slower than diffusion in the dimension of the subsystem symmetry. By studying an effective operator hydrodynamics in the presence of these symmetries, we predict the charge autocorrelator to decay ($i$) as $\log(t)/\sqrt{t}$ in two dimensions with a conserved $U(1)$ charge along intersecting \emph{lines}, and ($ii$) as $1/t^{3/4}$ in three spatial dimensions with intersecting \emph{planar} $U(1)$ symmetries. Through large-scale studies of automaton dynamics with these symmetries, we numerically observe charge relaxation that is consistent with these predictions. In both cases, the spatial charge distribution is distinctly non-Gaussian, and reminiscent of the diffusion of charges along a fractal surface. We numerically study the onset of quantum chaos in the spreading of local operators under these automaton dynamics, and observe power-law broadening of the ballistically-propagating fronts of evolving operators in two and three dimensions, and the saturation of out-of-time-ordered correlations to values consistent with quantum chaotic behavior., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures

We present a simple model that we believe captures the key aspects of the competition between superconducting and insulating states in twisted bilayer graphene. Within this model, the superconducting phase is primary, and arises at generic fillings, but is interrupted by the insulator at commensurate fillings. Importantly, the insulator forms because of electron-electron interactions, but the model is agnostic as to the superconducting pairing mechanism, which need not originate with electron-electron interactions. The model is composed of a collection of crossed one-dimensional quantum wires whose intersections form a superlattice. At each superlattice point, we place a locally superconducting puddle which can exchange Cooper pairs with the quantum wires. We analyze this model assuming weak wire-puddle and wire-wire couplings. We show that for a range of repulsive intrawire interactions, the system is superconducting at `generic' incommensurate fillings, with the superconductivity being `interrupted' by an insulating phase at commensurate fillings. We further show that the gapped insulating states at commensurate fillings give way to gapless states upon application of external Zeeman fields. These features are consistent with experimental observations in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphenes despite the distinct microscopic details. We further study the full phase diagram of this model and discover that it contains several distinct correlated insulating states, which we characterize herein., Comment: 8+4 pages, 3 figures. We study a driven, spin-orbit coupled fermionic system in a lattice at the resonant regime where the drive frequency equals the Hubbard repulsion, for which non-trivial constrained dynamics emerge at fast timescales. An effective density-dependent tunneling model is derived, and examined in the sparse filling regime in 1D. The system exhibits entropic self-localization, where while even numbers of atoms propagate ballistically, odd numbers form localized bound states induced by an effective attraction from a higher configurational entropy. These phenomena occur in the strong coupling limit where interactions only impose a constraint with no explicit Hamiltonian term. We show how the constrained dynamics lead to quantum few-body scars and map to an Anderson impurity model with an additional intriguing feature of non-reciprocal scattering. We show how local constraints can globally "shatter" Hilbert space into subsectors, leading to an unexpected dynamics with features reminiscent of both many body localization and quantum scars. A crisp example of this phenomenon is provided by a "fractonic circuit" - a model of quantum circuit dynamics in one dimension constrained to conserve both charge and dipole moment. We show how the Hilbert space of the fractonic circuit dynamically fractures into disconnected emergent subsectors within a particular charge and dipole symmetry sector. Exponentially large localized subspaces can be proven to exist for any one dimensional fractonic circuit with finite spatial range, and provide a potentially new route for the robust storage of quantum information. Other emergent subsectors display non-trivial dynamics and may be constructed by embedding finite sized non-trivial blocks into the localized subspace. The shattering of a particular symmetry sector into a distribution of dynamical subsectors with varying sizes leads to the coexistence of high and low entanglement states, i.e. this provides a general mechanism for the production of quantum many body scars. Inspired by recent experiments on many-body localized systems coupled to an environment, we apply a Flow Equation method to study the problem of a disorder chain of spinless fermions, coupled via density-density interactions to a second clean chain of spinless fermions. In particular, we focus on the conditions for the onset of a many-body localized phase in the clean sector of our model by proximity to the dirty one. We find that a many-body localization proximity effect in the clean component is established when the density of dirty fermions exceeds a threshold value. From the flow equation method we find that, similar to many-body localization in a single chain, the many-body localization proximity effect is also described by an extensive set of local integrals of motion. Furthermore, by tuning the geometry of the inter-chain couplings, we show that the dynamics of the model is ruled, on intermediate time scales, by an emergent set of quasi-conserved charges., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures

We study the surface of a three-dimensional spin chiral $\mathrm{Z}_2$ topological insulator (class CII), demonstrating the possibility of its localization. This arises through an interplay of interaction and statistically-symmetric disorder, that confines the gapless fermionic degrees of freedom to a network of one-dimensional helical domain-walls that can be localized. We identify two distinct regimes of this gapless insulating phase, a `clogged' regime wherein the network localization is induced by its junctions between otherwise metallic helical domain-walls, and a `fully localized' regime of localized domain-walls. We show that the large orbital degeneracy inherent in Moir\'e heterostructures naturally gives rise to a `high-$T_c$' like phase diagram with a chiral twist - wherein an exotic $\textit{quantum anomalous Hall}$ insulator phase is flanked by chiral $d+id$ superconducting domes. Specifically, we analyze repulsively interacting fermions on hexagonal (triangular or honeycomb) lattices near Van Hove filling, with an ${\rm SU}(N_f)$ flavor degeneracy. This model is inspired by recent experiments on graphene Moir\'e heterostructures. At this point, a nested Fermi surface and divergent density of states give rise to strong ($\ln^2$) instabilities to correlated phases, the competition between which can be controllably addressed through a combination of weak coupling parquet renormalization group and Landau-Ginzburg analysis. For $N_f=2$ (i.e. spin degeneracy only) it is known that chiral $d+id$ superconductivity is the unambiguously leading weak coupling instability. Here we show that $N_f\geq4$ leads to a richer (but still unambiguous and fully controllable) behavior, wherein at weak coupling the leading instability is to a fully gapped and chiral $\textit{Chern insulator}$, characterized by a spontaneous breaking of time reversal symmetry and a quantized Hall response. Upon doping this phase gives way to a chiral $d+id$ superconductor. We further consider deforming this minimal model by introducing an orbital splitting of the Van Hove singularities, and discuss the resulting RG flow and phase diagram. Our analysis thus bridges the minimal model and the practical Moir\'e band structures, thereby providing a transparent picture of how the correlated phases arise under various circumstances. Meanwhile, a similar analysis on the square lattice predicts a phase diagram where (for $N_f>2$) a nodal staggered flux phase with `loop current' order gives way upon doping to a nodal $d$-wave superconductor., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures. Starting from a state of low quantum entanglement, local unitary time evolution increases the entanglement of a quantum many-body system. In contrast, local projective measurements disentangle degrees of freedom and decrease entanglement. We study the interplay of these competing tendencies by considering time evolution combining both unitary and projective dynamics. We begin by constructing a toy model of Bell pair dynamics which demonstrates that measurements can keep a system in a state of low (i.e. area law) entanglement, in contrast with the volume law entanglement produced by generic pure unitary time evolution. While the simplest Bell pair model has area law entanglement for any measurement rate, as seen in certain non-interacting systems, we show that more generic models of entanglement can feature an area-to-volume law transition at a critical value of the measurement rate, in agreement with recent numerical investigations. As a concrete example of these ideas, we analytically investigate Clifford evolution in qubit systems which can exhibit an entanglement transition. We are able to identify stabilizer size distributions characterizing the area law, volume law and critical 'fixed points.' We also discuss Floquet random circuits, where the answers depend on the order of limits - one order of limits yields area law entanglement for any non-zero measurement rate, whereas a different order of limits allows for an area law - volume law transition. Finally, we provide a rigorous argument that a system subjected to projective measurements can only exhibit a volume law entanglement entropy if it also features a subleading correction term, which provides a universal signature of projective dynamics in the high-entanglement phase. Motivated by experiments on twisted bilayer graphene, we study the emergence of superconductivity from $\textit{weak}$ repulsive interactions in the Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice, with both spin and orbital degeneracies, and with the filling treated as a tunable control parameter. The attraction is generated through the Kohn-Luttinger mechanism. We find, similar to old studies of single layer graphene, that the leading superconducting instability is in a $d$-wave pairing channel close to Van Hove filling, and is in an $f$-wave pairing channel away from Van Hove filling. The $d$-wave pairing instability further has a twelve-fold degeneracy while the $f$-wave pairing instability has a ten-fold degeneracy. We analyze the symmetry breaking perturbations to this model. Combining this with a Ginzburg-Landau analysis, we conclude that close to Van Hove filling, a spin singlet $d+id$ pairing state should form (consistent with several other investigations of twisted bilayer graphene), whereas away from Van Hove filling we propose an unusual spin and orbital singlet $f$-wave pairing state., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures. v3: Published version
