Search

The dominant contribution to the theoretical uncertainty in the extracted weak parameters of the Standard Model comes from the hadronic uncertainties in the electroweak boxes, i.e. $\gamma-W^\pm/Z$ exchange diagrams. A dispersive analysis relates the box diagrams to the parity-odd structure function, $F_3$, for which the experimental data either do not exist or belong to a separate isospin channel. Therefore a first-principles calculation of $F_3$ is highly desirable. We investigate relations between the chiral susceptibility and axial $U(1)$ anomaly in lattice QCD at high temperatures. Employing the exactly chiral symmetric Dirac operator, we separate the purely axial $U(1)$ breaking effect in the connected and disconnected chiral susceptibilites in a theoretically clean manner. Security of modern classical data encryption often relies on computationally hard problems, which can be trivialized with the advent of quantum computers. A potential remedy for this is quantum communication which takes advantage of the laws of quantum physics to provide secure exchange of information. Here, quantum key distribution (QKD) represents a powerful tool, allowing for unconditionally secure quantum communication between remote parties. At the same time, microwave quantum communication is set to play an important role in future quantum networks because of its natural frequency compatibility with superconducting quantum processors and modern near-distance communication standards. To this end, we present an experimental realization of a continuous-variable QKD protocol based on propagating displaced squeezed microwave states. We use superconducting parametric devices for generation and single-shot quadrature detection of these states. We demonstrate unconditional security in our experimental microwave QKD setting. We show that security performance can be improved by adding finite trusted noise to the preparation side. Our results indicate feasibility of secure microwave quantum communication with the currently available technology in both open-air (up to $\sim$ 80 m) and cryogenic (over 1000 m) conditions., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, 1 supplementary information file

Gamma rays from HESS J1849$-$000, a middle-aged TeV pulsar wind nebula (PWN), are observed by the Tibet air shower array and the muon detector array. The detection significance of gamma rays reaches $4.0\, \sigma$ and $4.4\, \sigma$ levels above 25 TeV and 100 TeV, respectively, in units of Gaussian standard deviation $\sigma$. The energy spectrum measured between $40\, {\rm TeV} < E < 320\, {\rm TeV}$ for the first time is described with a simple power-law function of ${\rm d}N/{\rm d}E = (2.86 \pm 1.44) \times 10^{-16}(E/40\, {\rm TeV})^{-2.24 \pm 0.41}\, {\rm TeV}^{-1}\, {\rm cm}^{-2}\, {\rm s}^{-1}$. The gamma-ray energy spectrum from the sub-TeV ($E < 1\, {\rm TeV}$) to sub-PeV ($100\, {\rm TeV} < E < 1\, {\rm PeV}$) ranges including the results of previous studies can be modeled with the leptonic scenario, inverse Compton scattering by high-energy electrons accelerated by the PWN of PSR J1849$-$0001. On the other hand, the gamma-ray energy spectrum can also be modeled with the hadronic scenario in which gamma rays are generated from the decay of neutral pions produced by collisions between accelerated cosmic-ray protons and the ambient molecular cloud found in the gamma-ray emitting region. The cutoff energy of cosmic-ray protons $E_{\rm p\, cut}$, cut is estimated at ${\rm log}_{10}(E_{\rm p,\, cut}/{\rm TeV}) = 3.73^{+2.98}_{-0.66}$, suggesting that protons are accelerated up to the PeV energy range. HESS J1843$-$033 is a very-high-energy gamma-ray source whose origin remains unidentified. This work presents, for the first time, the energy spectrum of gamma rays beyond $100\, {\rm TeV}$ from the HESS J1843$-$033 region using the data recorded by the Tibet air shower array and its underground muon detector array. A gamma-ray source with an extension of $0.34^{\circ} \pm 0.12^{\circ}$ is successfully detected above $25\, {\rm TeV}$ at $(\alpha,\, \delta) = (281.09^{\circ}\pm 0.10^{\circ},\, -3.76^{\circ}\pm 0.09^{\circ})$ near HESS J1843$-$033 with a statistical significance of $6.2\, \sigma$, and the source is named TASG J1844$-$038. The position of TASG J1844$-$038 is consistent with those of HESS J1843$-$033, eHWC J1842$-$035, and LHAASO J1843$-$0338. The measured gamma-ray energy spectrum in $25\, {\rm TeV} < E < 130\, {\rm TeV}$ is described with ${\rm d}N/{\rm d}E = (9.70\pm 1.89)\times 10^{-16} (E/40\, {\rm TeV})^{-3.26\pm 0.30}\, {\rm TeV}^{-1} {\rm cm}^{-2} {\rm s}^{-1}$, and the spectral fit to the combined spectra of HESS J1843$-$033, LHAASO J1843$-$0338, and TASG J1844$-$038 implies the existence of a cutoff at $49.5\pm 9.0\, {\rm TeV}$. The structure of hadrons relevant for deep-inelastic scattering are completely characterised by the Compton amplitude. A direct calculation of the Compton amplitude in a lattice QCD setup provides a way to accessing the structure functions, circumventing the operator mixing and renormalisation issues of the standard operator product expansion approach. In this contribution, we focus on the QCDSF/UKQCD Collaboration's advances in calculating the forward Compton amplitude via an implementation of the second-order Feynman-Hellmann theorem. The Feynman--Hellmann approach to computing matrix elements in lattice QCD by first adding a perturbing operator to the action is described using the transition matrix and the Dyson expansion formalism. This perturbs the energies in the two-point baryon correlation function, from which the matrix element can be obtained. In particular at leading order in the perturbation we need to diagonalise a matrix of near-degenerate energies. While the method is general for all hadrons, we apply it here to a study of a Sigma to Nucleon baryon transition vector matrix element., Comment: 50 pages. Minor typos fixed. Published version

With increasing requirements for greater precision, it becomes essential to describe the effects of isospin breaking induced by both quark masses and electro-magnetic effects. In this work we perform a lattice analysis of the weak decay constants of the neutral pseudoscalar mesons including such isospin breaking effects, with particular consideration being given to the state mixing of the $\pi^0$, $\eta$ and $\eta^\prime$. We also detail extensions to the non-perturbative RI$^\prime$-MOM renormalization scheme for application to non-degenerate flavour-neutral operators which are permitted to mix, and present initial results. Using flavour-breaking expansions in terms of quark masses and charges we determine the leptonic decay constants for the $\pi^0$ and $\eta$ mesons, demonstrating in principle how precision determinations of all neutral pseudoscalar decay constants could be reached in lattice QCD with QED and strong isospin-breaking accounted for., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, analysis of charged mesons has been removed

At the TeV scale, low-energy precision observations of neutron characteristics provide unique probes of novel physics. Precision studies of neutron decay observables are susceptible to beyond the Standard Model (BSM) tensor and scalar interactions, while the neutron electric dipole moment, $d_n$, also has high sensitivity to new BSM CP-violating interactions. To fully utilise the potential of future experimental neutron physics programs, matrix elements of appropriate low-energy effective operators within neutron states must be precisely calculated. We present results from the QCDSF/UKQCD/CSSM collaboration for the isovector charges $g_T,~g_A$ and $g_S$ of the nucleon, $\Sigma$ and $\Xi$ baryons using lattice QCD methods and the Feynman-Hellmann theorem. We use a flavour symmetry breaking method to systematically approach the physical quark mass using ensembles that span five lattice spacings and multiple volumes. We extend this existing flavour breaking expansion to also account for lattice spacing and finite volume effects in order to quantify all systematic uncertainties. Our final estimates of the nucleon isovector charges are $g_T~=~1.010(21)_{\text{stat}}(12)_{\text{sys}},~g_A=1.253(63)_{\text{stat}}(41)_{\text{sys}}$ and $g_S~=~1.08(21)_{\text{stat}}(03)_{\text{sys}}$ renormalised, where appropriate, at $\mu=2~\text{GeV}$ in the $\overline{\text{MS}}$ scheme., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, 10 tables

Classical interferometers are indispensable tools for the precise determination of various physical quantities. Their accuracy is bound by the standard quantum limit. This limit can be overcome by using quantum states or nonlinear quantum elements. Here, we present the experimental study of a nonlinear Josephson interferometer operating in the microwave regime. Our quantum microwave parametric interferometer (QUMPI) is based on superconducting flux-driven Josephson parametric amplifiers combined with linear microwave elements. We perform a systematic analysis of the implemented QUMPI. We find that its Gaussian interferometric power exceeds the shot-noise limit and observe sub-Poissonian photon statistics in the output modes. Furthermore, we identify a low-gain operation regime of the QUMPI which is essential for optimal quantum measurements in quantum illumination protocols., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

The standard method for determining matrix elements in lattice QCD requires the computation of three-point correlation functions. This has the disadvantage of requiring two large time separations: one between the hadron source and operator and the other from the operator to the hadron sink. Here we consider an alternative formalism, based on the Dyson expansion leading to the Feynman-Hellmann theorem, which only requires the computation of two-point correlation functions. Both the cases of degenerate energy levels and quasi-degenerate energy levels which correspond to diagonal and transition matrix elements respectively can be considered in this formalism. Hybrid quantum systems in the ultrastrong, and even more in the deep-strong, coupling regimes can exhibit exotic physical phenomena and promise new applications in quantum technologies. In these nonperturbative regimes, a qubit--resonator system has an entangled quantum vacuum with a nonzero average photon number in the resonator, where the photons are virtual and cannot be directly detected. The vacuum field, however, is able to induce the symmetry breaking of a dispersively coupled probe qubit. We experimentally observe the parity symmetry breaking of an ancillary Xmon artificial atom induced by the field of a lumped-element superconducting resonator deep-strongly coupled with a flux qubit. This result opens a way to experimentally explore the novel quantum-vacuum effects emerging in the deep-strong coupling regime., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures

We present a simultaneous extraction of the moments of $F_2$ and $F_L$ structure functions of the proton for a range of photon virtuality, $Q^2$. This is achieved by computing the forward Compton amplitude on the lattice utilizing the second-order Feynman-Hellmann theorem. Our calculations are performed on configurations with two different lattice spacings and volumes, all at the $SU(3)$ symmetric point. We find the moments of $F_{2}$ and $F_{L}$ in good agreement with experiment. Power corrections turn out to be significant. We study nonclassical correlations in propagating two-mode squeezed microwave states in the presence of noise. We focus on two different types of correlations, namely, quantum entanglement and quantum discord. Quantum discord has various intriguing fundamental properties which require experimental verification, such as the asymptotic robustness to environmental noise. Here, we experimentally investigate quantum discord in propagating two-mode squeezed microwave states generated via superconducting Josephson parametric amplifiers. By exploiting an asymmetric noise injection into these entangled states, we demonstrate the robustness of quantum discord against thermal noise while verifying the sudden death of entanglement. Furthermore, we investigate the difference between quantum discord and entanglement of formation, which can be directly related to the flow of locally inaccessible information between the environment and the bipartite subsystem. We observe a crossover behavior between quantum discord and entanglement for low noise photon numbers, which is a result of the tripartite nature of noise injection. We demonstrate that the difference between entanglement and quantum discord can be related to the security of certain quantum key distribution protocols.

In a honeycomb-lattice spin-orbit assisted Mott insulator {\alpha}-RuCl3, an ultrafast magnetization is induced by circularly polarized excitation below the Mott gap. Photo-carriers play an important role, which are generated by turning down the synergy of the on-site Coulomb interaction and the spin-orbit interaction realizing the insulator state. An ultrafast 6- fs measurement of photo-carrier dynamics and a quantum mechanical analysis clarify the mechanism, according to which the magnetization emerges from a coherent charge motion between different t2g orbitals (dyz-dxz-dxy) of Ru3+ ions. This ultrafast magnetization is weakened in the antiferromagnetic (AF) phase, which is opposite to the general tendency that the inverse Faraday effect is larger in AF compounds than in paramagnetic ones. This temperature dependence indicates that the interorbital charge motion is affected by pseudo-spin rotational symmetry breaking in the AF phase.

A Josephson parametric amplifier (JPA) is executed in a three-dimensional (3D) microwave cavity by coupling it to a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) that is embedded in a two-dimensional resonator. The JPA is activated in a three-wave mixing configuration by injecting ac magnetic flux, at twice the 3D cavity frequency, into the SQUID. An 8.3 GHz cavity is measured in a non-degenerate phase-insensitive configuration which yields gains in excess of 40 dB, where a 20 dB gain results in an operational bandwidth of 0.4 MHz, a 1 dB compression point of -115 dBm with half a quantum of added noise., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

In this paper, we present the first high-speed video observation of a cloud-to-ground lightning flash and its associated downward-directed Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flash (TGF). The optical emission of the event was observed by a high-speed video camera running at 40,000 frames per second in conjunction with the Telescope Array Surface Detector, Lightning Mapping Array, interferometer, electric-field fast antenna, and the National Lightning Detection Network. The cloud-to-ground flash associated with the observed TGF was formed by a fast downward leader followed by a very intense return stroke peak current of -154 kA. The TGF occurred while the downward leader was below cloud base, and even when it was halfway in its propagation to ground. The suite of gamma-ray and lightning instruments, timing resolution, and source proximity offer us detailed information and therefore a unique look at the TGF phenomena.

This study conducted an analysis of muons, protons, and charged pions emitted from $\nu_{\mu}$ charged-current interactions on iron using a nuclear emulsion detector. The emulsion detector with a 65$\,$kg iron target was exposed to a neutrino beam corresponding to 4.0$\times$10$^{19}$ protons on target with a mean neutrino energy of 1.49$\,$GeV. The measurements were performed at a momentum threshold of 200 (50)$\,$MeV/$c$ for protons (pions), which are the lowest momentum thresholds attempted up to now. The measured quantities are the multiplicities, emission angles, and momenta of the muons, protons, and charged pions. In addition to these inclusive measurements, exclusive measurements such as the muon-proton emission-angle correlations of specific channels and the opening angle between the protons of CC0$\pi$2$p$ events were performed. The data were compared to Monte Carlo (MC) predictions and some significant differences were observed. The results of the study demonstrate the capability of detailed measurements of neutrino-nucleus interactions using a nuclear emulsion detector to improve neutrino interaction models., Comment: 21 pages, 25 figures

Lattice QCD calculations of the nucleon electromagnetic form factors are of interest at both the high and low momentum transfer regions. For high momentum transfers especially there are open questions which require more intense study, such as the potential zero crossing in the proton's electric form factor. We will present recent progress from the QCDSF/UKQCD/CSSM collaboration on the calculation of these form factors using the Feynman-Hellmann method in lattice QCD. The Feynman-Hellmann method allows for greater control over excited states which we take advantage of by going to high values of the momentum transfer. In this proceeding we present results of the form factors up to $6 \textrm{GeV}^{2}$, using $N_{f}=2+1$ flavour fermions for three different pion masses in the range 310-470 $\textrm{MeV}$. We present updates from QCDSF/UKQCD/CSSM on the $SU(3)_f$ breaking in $B$ meson decay constants. The $b$-quarks are generated with an anisotropic clover-improved action, and are tuned to match properties of the physical $B$ and $B^*$ mesons. Configurations are generated with $\overline{m}=(1/3)(2m_l+m_s)$ kept constant to control symmetry breaking effects. Various sources of systematic uncertainty will be discussed, including those from continuum extrapolations and extrapolations to the physical point. We also present new efforts to calculate $f_B$ and $f_{B_s}$ using weighted averages across multiple time fitting regions. A major objective of lattice QCD is the computation of hadronic matrix elements. The standard method is to use three-point and four-point correlation functions. An alternative approach, requiring only the computation of two-point correlation functions is to use the Feynman-Hellmann theorem. In this talk we develop this method up to second order in perturbation theory, in a context appropriate for lattice QCD. This encompasses the Compton Amplitude (which forms the basis for deep inelastic scattering) and hadron scattering. For several decades, the origin of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) has been an unsolved question of high-energy astrophysics. One approach for solving this puzzle is to correlate UHECRs with high-energy neutrinos, since neutrinos are a direct probe of hadronic interactions of cosmic rays and are not deflected by magnetic fields. In this paper, we present three different approaches for correlating the arrival directions of neutrinos with the arrival directions of UHECRs. The neutrino data is provided by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and ANTARES, while the UHECR data with energies above $\sim$50 EeV is provided by the Pierre Auger Observatory and the Telescope Array. All experiments provide increased statistics and improved reconstructions with respect to our previous results reported in 2015. The first analysis uses a high-statistics neutrino sample optimized for point-source searches to search for excesses of neutrinos clustering in the vicinity of UHECR directions. The second analysis searches for an excess of UHECRs in the direction of the highest-energy neutrinos. The third analysis searches for an excess of pairs of UHECRs and highest-energy neutrinos on different angular scales. None of the analyses has found a significant excess, and previously reported over-fluctuations are reduced in significance. A database is under construction to provide a complete collection of published basic properties of hypernuclei such as {\Lambda} binding energies, lifetimes, or excitation energies. From these values, averages with related errors are computed in a systematic way. For each property, the overall experimental situation is depicted in form of an ideogram showing the combined probability density function of the measurements. The database is accessible via a dynamic website at https://hypernuclei.kph.uni-mainz.de with an user interface offering customizable visualizations, selections, or unit conversions. Lattice calculations of hadronic observables are aggravated by short-distance fluctuations. The gradient flow, which can be viewed as a particular realisation of the coarse-graining step of momentum space RG transformations, proves a powerful tool for evolving the lattice gauge field to successively longer length scales for any initial coupling. Already at small flow times we find the signal-to-noise ratio of two- and three-point functions significantly enhanced and the projection onto the ground state largely improved, while the effect on the hadronic observables considered here to be negligible. A further benefit is that far fewer conjugate gradient iterations are needed for the Wilson-Dirac inverter to converge. Additionally, we find the renormalisation constants of quark bilinears to be significantly closer to unity., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures. Using an SU(3)-flavour symmetry breaking expansion between the strange and light quark masses, we determine how this constrains the extrapolation of baryon octet matrix elements and form factors. In particular we can construct certain combinations, which fan out from the symmetric point (when all the quark masses are degenerate) to the point where the light and strange quarks take their physical values. We present the first observation by the Telescope Array Surface Detector (TASD) of the effect of thunderstorms on the development of cosmic ray single count rate intensity over a 700 km$^{2}$ area. Observations of variations in the secondary low-energy cosmic ray counting rate, using the TASD, allow us to study the electric field inside thunderstorms, on a large scale, as it progresses on top of the 700 km$^{2}$ detector, without dealing with the limitation of narrow exposure in time and space using balloons and aircraft detectors. In this work, variations in the cosmic ray intensity (single count rate) using the TASD, were studied and found to be on average at the $\sim(0.5-1)\%$ and up to 2\% level. These observations were found to be both in excess and in deficit. They were also found to be correlated with lightning in addition to thunderstorms. These variations lasted for tens of minutes; their footprint on the ground ranged from 6 to 24 km in diameter and moved in the same direction as the thunderstorm. With the use of simple electric field models inside the cloud and between cloud to ground, the observed variations in the cosmic ray single count rate were recreated using CORSIKA simulations. Depending on the electric field model used and the direction of the electric field in that model, the electric field magnitude that reproduces the observed low-energy cosmic ray single count rate variations was found to be approximately between 0.2-0.4 GV. This in turn allows us to get a reasonable insight on the electric field and its effect on cosmic ray air showers inside thunderstorms.

Magnonics is a field of science that addresses the physical properties of spin waves and utilizes them for data processing. Scalability down to atomic dimensions, operations in the GHz-to-THz frequency range, utilization of nonlinear and nonreciprocal phenomena, and compatibility with CMOS are just a few of many advantages offered by magnons. Although magnonics is still primarily positioned in the academic domain, the scientific and technological challenges of the field are being extensively investigated, and many proof-of-concept prototypes have already been realized in laboratories. This roadmap is a product of the collective work of many authors that covers versatile spin-wave computing approaches, conceptual building blocks, and underlying physical phenomena. In particular, the roadmap discusses the computation operations with Boolean digital data, unconventional approaches like neuromorphic computing, and the progress towards magnon-based quantum computing. The article is organized as a collection of sub-sections grouped into seven large thematic sections. The Telescope Array Collaboration has observed an excess of events with $E \ge 10^{19.4} ~{\rm eV}$ in the data which is centered at (RA, dec) = ($19^\circ$, $35^\circ$). This is near the center of the Perseus-Pisces supercluster (PPSC). The PPSC is about $70 ~{\rm Mpc}$ distant and is the closest supercluster in the Northern Hemisphere (other than the Virgo supercluster of which we are a part). A Li-Ma oversampling analysis with $20^\circ$-radius circles indicates an excess in the arrival direction of events with a local significance of about 4 standard deviations. The probability of having such excess close to the PPSC by chance is estimated to be 3.5 standard deviations. We present a lattice analysis of the light pseudoscalar mesons with consideration for the mixing between the flavour-neutral states $\pi^0$, $\eta$ and $\eta^\prime$. We extract the masses and flavour compositions of the pseudoscalar meson nonet in $n_f=1+1+1$ lattice QCD+QED around an SU(3)-flavour symmetric point, and observe flavour-symmetry features of the extracted data, along with preliminary extrapolation results for the flavour compositions at the physical point. A key result of this work is the observed mass splitting between the $\pi^0$ and $\eta$ on our ensembles, which is found to exhibit behaviour that is simply related to the corresponding flavour compositions., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures. We highlight QCDSF/UKQCD Collaboration's recent developments on computing the Compton amplitude directly via an implementation of the second order Feynman-Hellmann theorem. As an application, we compute the nucleon Compton tensor across a range of photon virtuality at an unphysical quark mass. This enables us to study the $Q^2$ dependence of the low moments of the nucleon structure functions in a lattice calculation for the first time. Andes Large-area PArticle detector for Cosmic-ray physics and Astronomy (ALPACA) is an international experiment that applies southern very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray astronomy to determine the origin of cosmic rays around the knee energy region ($10^{15}\, {\rm eV} - 10^{16}\, {\rm eV}$). The experiment consists of an air shower (AS) array with a surface of $83, 000\, {\rm m}^2$ and an underground water Cherenkov muon detector (MD) array covering $5, 400\, {\rm m}^2$. The experimental site is at the Mt. Chacaltaya plateau in La Paz, Bolivia, with an altitude of $4, 740\, {\rm m}$ corresponding to $572\, {\rm g}/{\rm cm}^2$ atmospheric thickness. As the prototype experiment of ALPACA, the ALPAQUITA experiment aims to begin data acquisition in late 2021. The ALPAQUITA array consists of a smaller AS array ($18, 450\, {\rm m}^2$) and underground MD ($900\, {\rm m}^2$), which are now under construction. ALPAQUITA's sensitivity to gamma-ray sources is evaluated with Monte Carlo simulations. The simulation finds that five gamma-ray sources observed by H.E.S.S. and HAWC experiments will be detected by ALPAQUITA beyond 10 TeV and one out of these five - HESS J1702-420A - above 300 TeV in one calendar year observation. The latter finding means that scientific discussions can be made on the emission mechanism of gamma rays beyond 100 TeV from southern sources on the basis of the observational results of this prototype experiment., Comment: This is the manuscript accepted by Experimental Astronomy. Cosmic rays (protons and other atomic nuclei) are believed to gain energies of petaelectronvolts (PeV) and beyond at astrophysical particle accelerators called 'PeVatrons' inside our Galaxy. Although a characteristic feature of a PeVatron is expected to be a hard gamma-ray energy spectrum that extends beyond 100 teraelectronvolts (TeV) without a cutoff, none of the currently known sources exhibits such a spectrum due to the low maximum energy of accelerated cosmic rays or insufficient detector sensitivity around 100 TeV. Here we report the observation of gamma-ray emission from the supernova remnant G106.3+2.7 above 10 TeV. This work provides flux data points up to and above 100 TeV and indicates that the very-high-energy gamma-ray emission above 10 TeV is well correlated with a molecular cloud rather than the pulsar PSR J2229+6114. Regarding the gamma-ray emission mechanism of G106.3+2.7, this morphological feature appears to favor a hadronic origin via the {\pi}0 decay caused by accelerated relativistic protons over a leptonic one via the inverse-Compton scattering by relativistic electrons. Furthermore, we point out that an X-ray flux upper limit on the synchrotron spectrum would provide important information to firmly establish the hadronic scenario as the mechanism of particle acceleration at the source., Comment: Published in Nature Astronomy

We report observations of gamma-ray emissions with energies in the 100 TeV energy region from the Cygnus region in our Galaxy. Two sources are significantly detected in the directions of the Cygnus OB1 and OB2 associations. Based on their positional coincidences, we associate one with a pulsar PSR J2032+4127 and the other mainly with a pulsar wind nebula PWN G75.2+0.1 with the pulsar moving away from its original birthplace situated around the centroid of the observed gamma-ray emission. The vacuum of quantum chromodynamics has an incredibly rich structure at the nonperturbative level, which is intimately connected with the topology of gauge fields, and put to a test by the strong CP problem. We investigate the long-distance properties of the theory in the presence of the topological $\theta$ term. This is done on the lattice, using the gradient flow to isolate the long-distance modes in the functional integral measure and tracing it over successive length scales. The key point is that the vacuum splits into disconnected topological sectors with markedly different physical characteristics, which gives rise to a nontrivial behavior depending on $\theta$. We find that the color fields produced by quarks and gluons are screened, and confinement is lost, for bare vacuum angles $|\theta| > 0$, thus providing a natural solution of the strong CP problem. The renormalized vacuum angle $\theta$ is found to flow to zero in the infrared limit, leading to a self-consistent solution within QCD., Comment: 22 pages, 15 figures, typos corrected, meets journal version in Nucl. This study aims to construct a theoretical formulation of a nonequilibrium process for a system of Bose--Einstein condensate associated with a spontaneous symmetry breakdown. For this, Thermo Field Dynamics is used. We then describe the most general forms of a 4x4 transformation and an unperturbed Hamiltonian. After calculating the $4\times 4$ self-energy and identifying its on-shell, we impose the renormalization condition in which the entire on-shell self-energy should vanish. This condition provides a sufficient number of independent equations to determine all of the parameters in an unperturbed Hamiltonian, among which the quantum transport equations for normal and anomalous number distributions are included., Comment: 22 pages

We report, for the first time, the long-awaited detection of diffuse gamma rays with energies between 100 TeV and 1 PeV in the Galactic disk. Particularly, all gamma rays above 398 TeV are observed apart from known TeV gamma-ray sources and compatible with expectations from the hadronic emission scenario in which gamma rays originate from the decay of $\pi^0$'s produced through the interaction of protons with the interstellar medium in the Galaxy. The modern field of quantum communication thrives on promise to deliver efficient and unconditionally secure ways to exchange information by exploiting quantum laws of physics. Here, quantum teleportation stands out as an exemplary protocol allowing for the disembodied and safe transfer of unknown quantum states using quantum entanglement and classical communication as resources. The experimental feasibility of quantum teleportation with propagating waves, relevant to communication scenarios, has been demonstrated in various physical settings. However, an analogous implementation of quantum teleportation in the microwave domain was missing so far. At the same time, recent breakthroughs in quantum computation with superconducting circuits have triggered a demand for quantum communication between spatially separated superconducting processors operated at microwave frequencies. Here, we demonstrate a realization of deterministic quantum teleportation of coherent microwave states by exploiting two-mode squeezing and analog feedforward over macroscopic distances $d = 42\,$cm. We achieve teleportation fidelities $F = 0.689 \pm 0.004$ exceeding the no-cloning $F_\mathrm{nc} = 2/3$ threshold for coherent states with an average photon number of up to $n_\mathrm{d} = 1.1$. Our results provide a key ingredient for the teleportation-based quantum gate for modular quantum computing with superconducting circuits and establish a solid foundation for future microwave quantum local area networks.

Telescope Array (TA) is the largest ultrahigh energy cosmic-ray (UHECR) observatory in the Northern Hemisphere. It explores the origin of UHECRs by measuring their energy spectrum, arrival-direction distribution, and mass composition using a surface detector (SD) array covering approximately 700 km$^2$ and fluorescence detector (FD) stations. TA has found evidence for a cluster of cosmic rays with energies greater than 57 EeV. In order to confirm this evidence with more data, it is necessary to increase the data collection rate.We have begun building an expansion of TA that we call TAx4. In this paper, we explain the motivation, design, technical features, and expected performance of the TAx4 SD. Muon detectors and neutron monitors were recently installed at Syowa Station, in the Antarctic, to observe different types of secondary particles resulting from cosmic ray interactions simultaneously from the same location. Continuing observations will give new insight into the response of muon detectors to atmospheric and geomagnetic effects. Operation began in February, 2018 and the system has been stable with a duty-cycle exceeding 94%. Muon data shows a clear seasonal variation, which is expected from the atmospheric temperature effect. We verified successful operation by showing that the muon and neutron data are consistent with those from other locations by comparing intensity variations during a space weather event. We have carried out $\nu_{\mu}$ charged-current interaction measurement on iron using an emulsion detector exposed to the T2K neutrino beam in the J-PARC neutrino facility. The data samples correspond to 4.0$\times$10$^{19}$ protons on target, and the neutrino mean energy is 1.49$\,$GeV. The emulsion detector is suitable for precision measurements of charged particles produced in neutrino-iron interactions with a low momentum threshold thanks to thin-layered structure and sub-$\mu$m spatial resolution. The charged particles are successfully detected, and their multiplicities are measured using the emulsion detector. The cross section was measured to be $\sigma^{\mathrm{Fe}}_{\mathrm{CC}} = (1.28 \pm 0.11({\mathrm{stat.}})^{+0.12}_{-0.11}({\mathrm{syst.}})) \times 10^{-38} \, {\mathrm{cm}}^{2}/{\mathrm{nucleon}}$. The cross section in a limited kinematic phase space of induced muons, $\theta_{\mu} < 45^{\circ}$ and $p_{\mu} > 400 \, {\rm MeV}/c$, on iron was $\sigma^{\mathrm{Fe}}_{\mathrm{CC \hspace{1mm} phase \hspace{0.5mm} space}} = (0.84 \pm 0.07({\mathrm{stat.}})^{+0.07}_{-0.06}({\mathrm{syst.}})) \times 10^{-38} \, {\mathrm{cm}}^{2}/{\mathrm{nucleon}}$. The cross-section results are consistent with previous values obtained via different techniques using the same beamline, and they are well reproduced by current neutrino interaction models. These results demonstrate the capability of the detector towards the detailed measurements of the neutrino-nucleus interactions around the 1$\,$GeV energy region., Comment: 27 pages, 17 figures

The low-noise amplification of weak microwave signals is crucial for countless protocols in quantum information processing. Quantum mechanics sets an ultimate lower limit of half a photon to the added input noise for phase-preserving amplification of narrowband signals, also known as the standard quantum limit (SQL). This limit, which is equivalent to a maximum quantum efficiency of $0.5$, can be overcome by employing nondegenerate parametric amplification of broadband signals. We show that, in principle, a maximum quantum efficiency of 1 can be reached. Experimentally, we find a quantum efficiency of $0.69 \pm 0.02$, well beyond the SQL, by employing a flux-driven Josephson parametric amplifier and broadband thermal signals. We expect that our results allow for fundamental improvements in the detection of ultraweak microwave signals.

We study microwave response of a Josephson parametric oscillator consisting of a superconducting transmission-line resonator with an embedded dc-SQUID. The dc-SQUID allows to control the magnitude of a Kerr nonlinearity over the ranges where it is smaller or larger than the photon loss rate. Spectroscopy measurements reveal the change of the microwave response from a classical Duffing oscillator to a Kerr parametric oscillator in a single device. In the single-photon Kerr regime, we observe parametric oscillations with a well-defined phase of either $0$ or $\pi$, whose probability can be controlled by an externally injected signal.

In this paper we report the first close, high-resolution observations of downward-directed terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs) detected by the large-area Telescope Array cosmic ray observatory, obtained in conjunction with broadband VHF interferometer and fast electric field change measurements of the parent discharge. The results show that the TGFs occur during strong initial breakdown pulses (IBPs) in the first few milliseconds of negative cloud-to-ground and low-altitude intracloud flashes, and that the IBPs are produced by a newly-identified streamer-based discharge process called fast negative breakdown. The observations indicate the relativistic runaway electron avalanches (RREAs) responsible for producing the TGFs are initiated by embedded spark-like transient conducting events (TCEs) within the fast streamer system, and potentially also by individual fast streamers themselves. The TCEs are inferred to be the cause of impulsive sub-pulses that are characteristic features of classic IBP sferics. Additional development of the avalanches would be facilitated by the enhanced electric field ahead of the advancing front of the fast negative breakdown. In addition to showing the nature of IBPs and their enigmatic sub-pulses, the observations also provide a possible explanation for the unsolved question of how the streamer to leader transition occurs during the initial negative breakdown, namely as a result of strong currents flowing in the final stage of successive IBPs, extending backward through both the IBP itself and the negative streamer breakdown preceding the IBP., Comment: Typo fixed and reference added. We provide numerical evidence for a temporal quantum-mechanical interference phenomenon: time molecules (TM). A variety of such stroboscopic states are observed in the dynamics of two interacting qubits subject to a periodic sequence of $\pi$-pulses with the period $T$. The TMs appear periodically in time and have a large duration, $\delta t_\mathrm{TM} \gg T$. All TMs demonstrate an almost zero value of the total polarization and a strong enhancement of the entanglement entropy $S$ up to the maximum value $S=\ln 2$ of a corresponding Bell state. The TMs are generated by the commensurability of the Floquet eigenvalues and the presence of maximally entangled Floquet eigenstates. The TMs remain stable with detuned system parameters and with an increased number of qubits. This paper reports the track multiplicity and kinematics of muons, charged pions, and protons from charged-current inclusive $\bar{\nu}_{\mu}$ and $\nu_{\mu}$ interactions on a water target, measured using a nuclear emulsion detector in the NINJA experiment. A 3-kg water target was exposed to the T2K antineutrino-enhanced beam with a mean energy of 1.3 GeV. Owing to the high-granularity of the nuclear emulsion, protons with momenta down to 200 MeV/$c$ from the neutrino-water interactions were detected. We find good agreement between the observed data and model predictions for all kinematic distributions other than the number of charged pions. Charge acceleration during an intense light field application to solids attracts much attention as elementary processes in high-harmonic generation and photoelectron emission [1-7]. For manipulating such attosecond dynamics of charge, carrier-envelope-phase (CEP:relative phase between carrier oscillation of light field and its envelope function) control has been employed in insulators, nanometal and graphene [8-10]. In superconducting materials, collective control of charge motion is expected because of its strongly coherent nature of quasi-particles. Here, in a layered organic superconductor, second harmonic generation (SHG) is observed by using a single-cycle 6 femtosecond near infrared pulse, which is in contrast to the common belief that even harmonics are forbidden in the centrosymmetric system. The SHG shows a CEP sensitive nature and an enhancement near the superconducting temperature. The result and its quantum many-body analysis indicate that a polarized current is induced by non-dissipative acceleration of charge, which is amplified by superconducting fluctuations. The forward Compton amplitude describes the process of virtual photon scattering from a hadron and provides an essential ingredient for the understanding of hadron structure. As a physical amplitude, the Compton tensor naturally includes all target mass corrections and higher twist effects at a fixed virtuality, $Q^2$. By making use of the second-order Feynman-Hellmann theorem, the nucleon Compton tensor is calculated in lattice QCD at an unphysical quark mass across a range of photon momenta $3 \lesssim Q^2 \lesssim 7$ GeV$^2$. This allows for the $Q^2$ dependence of the low moments of the nucleon structure functions to be studied in a lattice calculation for the first time. Motivated by the detection of a significant dipole structure in the arrival directions of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays above 8 EeV reported by the Pierre Auger Observatory (Auger), we search for a large-scale anisotropy using data collected with the surface detector array of the Telescope Array Experiment (TA). With 11 years of TA data, a dipole structure in a projection of the right ascension is fitted with an amplitude of 3.3+- 1.9% and a phase of 131 +- 33 degrees. The corresponding 99% confidence-level upper limit on the amplitude is 7.3%. Ultra high energy cosmic rays provide the highest known energy source in the universe to measure proton cross sections. Though conditions for collecting such data are less controlled than an accelerator environment, current generation cosmic ray observatories have large enough exposures to collect significant statistics for a reliable measurement for energies above what can be attained in the lab. Cosmic ray measurements of cross section use atmospheric calorimetry to measure depth of air shower maximum ($X_{\mathrm{max}}$), which is related to the primary particle's energy and mass. The tail of the $X_{\mathrm{max}}$ distribution is assumed to be dominated by showers generated by protons, allowing measurement of the inelastic proton-air cross section. In this work the proton-air inelastic cross section measurement, $\sigma^{\mathrm{inel}}_{\mathrm{p-air}}$, using data observed by Telescope Array's Black Rock Mesa and Long Ridge fluorescence detectors and surface detector array in hybrid mode is presented. $\sigma^{\mathrm{inel}}_{\mathrm{p-air}}$ is observed to be $520.1 \pm 35.8$[Stat.] $^{+25.0}_{-40}$[Sys.]~mb at $\sqrt{s} = 73$ TeV. The total proton-proton cross section is subsequently inferred from Glauber formalism and is found to be $\sigma^{\mathrm{tot}}_{\mathrm{pp}} = 139.4 ^{+23.4}_{-21.3}$ [Stat.]$ ^{+15.0}_{-24.0}$[Sys.]~mb.
