As quantum networks expand and are deployed outside research laboratories, a need arises to design and integrate compact control electronics for each memory node. It is essential to understand the performance requirements for such systems, especially concerning tolerable levels of noise, since these specifications dramatically affect a system's design complexity and cost. Here, using an approach that can be easily generalized across quantum-hardware platforms, we present a case study based on nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond. We model and experimentally verify the effects of phase noise and timing jitter in the control system in conjunction with the spin qubit's environmental noise. We further consider the impact of different phase noise characteristics on the fidelity of dynamical decoupling sequences. The results demonstrate a procedure to specify design requirements for integrated quantum control signal generators for solid-state spin qubits, depending on their coherence time, intrinsic noise spectrum, and required fidelity.

Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly used by software engineers for code generation. However, limitations of LLMs such as irrelevant or incorrect code have highlighted the need for prompt programming (or prompt engineering) where engineers apply specific prompt techniques (e.g., chain-of-thought or input-output examples) to improve the generated code. Despite this, the impact of different prompt techniques -- and their combinations -- on code generation remains underexplored. In this study, we introduce CodePromptEval, a dataset of 7072 prompts designed to evaluate five prompt techniques (few-shot, persona, chain-of-thought, function signature, list of packages) and their effect on the correctness, similarity, and quality of complete functions generated by three LLMs (GPT-4o, Llama3, and Mistral). Our findings show that while certain prompt techniques significantly influence the generated code, combining multiple techniques does not necessarily improve the outcome. Additionally, we observed a trade-off between correctness and quality when using prompt techniques. Process-supervised reward models (PRMs), which verify large language model (LLM) outputs step-by-step, have achieved significant success in mathematical and coding problems. However, their application to other domains remains largely unexplored. In this work, we train a PRM to provide step-level reward signals for clinical notes generated by LLMs from patient-doctor dialogues. Guided by real-world clinician expertise, we carefully designed step definitions for clinical notes and utilized Gemini-Pro 1.5 to automatically generate process supervision data at scale. Our proposed PRM, trained on the LLaMA-3.1 8B instruct model, demonstrated superior performance compared to Gemini-Pro 1.5 and an outcome-supervised reward model (ORM) across two key evaluations: (1) the accuracy of selecting gold-reference samples from error-containing samples, achieving 98.8% (versus 61.3% for ORM and 93.8% for Gemini-Pro 1.5), and (2) the accuracy of selecting physician-preferred notes, achieving 56.2% (compared to 51.2% for ORM and 50.0% for Gemini-Pro 1.5). Additionally, we conducted ablation studies to determine optimal loss functions and data selection strategies, along with physician reader studies to explore predictors of downstream Best-of-N performance. Our promising results suggest the potential of PRMs to extend beyond the clinical domain, offering a scalable and effective solution for diverse generative tasks.

Genetic Network Programming (GNP) is an evolutionary algorithm that extends Genetic Programming (GP). It is typically used in agent control problems. In contrast to GP, which employs a tree structure, GNP utilizes a directed graph structure. During the evolutionary process, the connections between nodes change to discover the optimal strategy. Due to the large number of node connections, GNP has a large search space, making it challenging to identify an appropriate graph structure. One way to reduce this search space is by utilizing simplified operators that restrict the changeable node connections to those participating in the fitness function. However, this method has not been applied to GNP structures that use separate graphs for each agent, such as situation-based GNP (SBGNP). This paper proposes a method to apply simplified operators to SBGNP. To evaluate the performance of this method, we tested it on the Tileworld benchmark, where the algorithm demonstrated improvements in average fitness.

This paper tackles the intricate challenge of video question-answering (VideoQA). Despite notable progress, current methods fall short of effectively integrating questions with video frames and semantic object-level abstractions to create question-aware video representations. We introduce Local-Global Question Aware Video Embedding (LGQAVE), which incorporates three major innovations to integrate multi-modal knowledge better and emphasize semantic visual concepts relevant to specific questions. LGQAVE moves beyond traditional ad-hoc frame sampling by utilizing a cross-attention mechanism that precisely identifies the most relevant frames concerning the questions. It captures the dynamics of objects within these frames using distinct graphs, grounding them in question semantics with the miniGPT model. These graphs are processed by a question-aware dynamic graph transformer (Q-DGT), which refines the outputs to develop nuanced global and local video representations. An additional cross-attention module integrates these local and global embeddings to generate the final video embeddings, which a language model uses to generate answers. Extensive evaluations across multiple benchmarks demonstrate that LGQAVE significantly outperforms existing models in delivering accurate multi-choice and open-ended answers.

Purpose: Finding scholarly articles is a time-consuming and cumbersome activity, yet crucial for conducting science. Due to the growing number of scholarly articles, new scholarly search systems are needed to effectively assist researchers in finding relevant literature. Methodology: We take a neuro-symbolic approach to scholarly search and exploration by leveraging state-of-the-art components, including semantic search, Large Language Models (LLMs), and Knowledge Graphs (KGs). The semantic search component composes a set of relevant articles. From this set of articles, information is extracted and presented to the user. Findings: The presented system, called ORKG ASK (Assistant for Scientific Knowledge), provides a production-ready search and exploration system. Our preliminary evaluation indicates that our proposed approach is indeed suitable for the task of scholarly information retrieval. Value: With ORKG ASK, we present a next-generation scholarly search and exploration system and make it available online. Energy dissipation in collisionless shocks is a key mechanism in various astrophysical environments. Its non-linear nature complicates analytical understanding and necessitate Particle-in-Cell (PIC) simulations. This study examines the impact of reducing the ion-to-electron mass ratio ($m_r$), to decrease computational cost, on energy partitioning in 1D3V (one spatial and three velocity-space dimensions) PIC simulations of strong, non-relativistic, parallel electron-ion collisionless shocks using the SHARP code. We compare simulations with a reduced mass ratio ($m_r = 100$) to those with a realistic mass ratio ($m_r = 1836$) for shocks with high ($\mathcal{M}_A = 21.3$) and low ($\mathcal{M}_A = 5.3$) Alfv$\acute{\text{e}}$n Mach numbers. Our findings show that the mass ratio significantly affects particle acceleration and thermal energy dissipation. At high $\mathcal{M}_A$, a reduced mass ratio leads to more efficient electron acceleration and an unrealistically high ion flux at higher momentum. At low $\mathcal{M}_A$, it causes complete suppression of electron acceleration, whereas the realistic mass ratio enables efficient electron acceleration. The reduced mass ratio also results in excessive electron heating and lower heating in downstream ions at both Mach numbers, with slightly more magnetic field amplification at low $\mathcal{M}_A$. Consequently, the electron-to-ion temperature ratio is high at low $\mathcal{M}_A$ due to reduced ion heating and remains high at high $\mathcal{M}_A$ due to increased electron heating. Precise manipulation of liquid marbles has significant potential in various applications such as lab-on-a-chip systems, drug delivery, and biotechnology and has been a challenge for researchers. Ferrofluid marble (FM) is a marble with a ferrofluid core that can easily be manipulated by a magnetic field. Although FMs have great potential for accurate positioning and manipulation, these marbles have not been precisely controlled in magnetic digital microfluidics, so far. In this study for the first time, a novel method of magnetic actuation is proposed using a pair of Helmholtz coils and permanent magnets. The governing equations for controlling the FM position are investigated, and it is shown that there are three different strategies for adjusting the applied magnetic force. Then, experiments are conducted to demonstrate the capability of the proposed method. To this aim, different magnetic setups are proposed for manipulating FMs. These setups are compared in terms of energy consumption and tracking ability across various frequencies. The study showcases several applications of precise FM position control, including controllable reciprocal positioning, simultaneous position control of two FMs, the transport of non-magnetic liquid marbles using the FMs, and sample extraction method from the liquid core of the FM.

With increasing concerns over privacy in healthcare, especially for sensitive medical data, this research introduces a federated learning framework that combines local differential privacy and secure aggregation using Secure Multi-Party Computation for medical image classification. Further, we propose DPResNet, a modified ResNet architecture optimized for differential privacy. Leveraging the BloodMNIST benchmark dataset, we simulate a realistic data-sharing environment across different hospitals, addressing the distinct privacy challenges posed by federated healthcare data. Experimental results indicate that our privacy-preserving federated model achieves accuracy levels close to non-private models, surpassing traditional approaches while maintaining strict data confidentiality. The quasi two-dimensional kagome ferrimagnet TbMn$_6$Sn$_6$ is investigated for thermo-remanent magnetization and Hall effects. On cooling under a moderate magnetic field, the sample attains a magnetization value close to the saturation magnetization. Upon heating in a very small magnetic field, the sample continues to maintain the large value of magnetization, which eventually diminishes distinctly at around 200 K manifesting an ultrasharp jump. A similar feature is also observed in the Hall resistivity, which holds its saturation value when heated back in zero field after being field-cooled. The ultrasharp jump in magnetization is also get reflected in our Hall data. The observed data is exotic and can be rooted to the large anisotropy and the strong exchange interaction.

The automatic detection of pedestrian heads in crowded environments is essential for crowd analysis and management tasks, particularly in high-risk settings such as railway platforms and event entrances. These environments, characterized by dense crowds and dynamic movements, are underrepresented in public datasets, posing challenges for existing deep learning models. To address this gap, we introduce the Railway Platforms and Event Entrances-Heads (RPEE-Heads) dataset, a novel, diverse, high-resolution, and accurately annotated resource. It includes 109,913 annotated pedestrian heads across 1,886 images from 66 video recordings, with an average of 56.2 heads per image. Annotations include bounding boxes for visible head regions. In addition to introducing the RPEE-Heads dataset, this paper evaluates eight state-of-the-art object detection algorithms using the RPEE-Heads dataset and analyzes the impact of head size on detection accuracy. The experimental results show that You Only Look Once v9 and Real-Time Detection Transformer outperform the other algorithms, achieving mean average precisions of 90.7% and 90.8%, with inference times of 11 and 14 milliseconds, respectively. Moreover, the findings underscore the need for specialized datasets like RPEE-Heads for training and evaluating accurate models for head detection in railway platforms and event entrances. Health-related discussions on social media like Reddit offer valuable insights, but extracting quantitative data from unstructured text is challenging. In this work, we present an adapted framework from QuaLLM into QuaLLM-Health for extracting clinically relevant quantitative data from Reddit discussions about glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists using large language models (LLMs). We collected 410k posts and comments from five GLP-1-related communities using the Reddit API in July 2024. After filtering for cancer-related discussions, 2,059 unique entries remained. We developed annotation guidelines to manually extract variables such as cancer survivorship, family cancer history, cancer types mentioned, risk perceptions, and discussions with physicians. Two domain-experts independently annotated a random sample of 100 entries to create a gold-standard dataset. We then employed iterative prompt engineering with OpenAI's "GPT-4o-mini" on the gold-standard dataset to build an optimized pipeline that allowed us to extract variables from the large dataset. The optimized LLM achieved accuracies above 0.85 for all variables, with precision, recall and F1 score macro averaged > 0.90, indicating balanced performance. Stability testing showed a 95% match rate across runs, confirming consistency. Applying the framework to the full dataset enabled efficient extraction of variables necessary for downstream analysis, costing under $3 and completing in approximately one hour. QuaLLM-Health demonstrates that LLMs can effectively and efficiently extract clinically relevant quantitative data from unstructured social media content. Incorporating human expertise and iterative prompt refinement ensures accuracy and reliability. This methodology can be adapted for large-scale analysis of patient-generated data across various health domains, facilitating valuable insights for healthcare research.

This study investigated the factors contributing to the failure of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) startups in the emerging metaverse landscape. Through an in-depth analysis of 29 failed AR/VR startups from 2016 to 2022, key pitfalls were identified, such as a lack of scalability, poor usability, unclear value propositions, and the failure to address specific user problems. Grounded in these findings, we developed the Metaverse Innovation Canvas (MIC) a tailored business ideation framework for XR products and services. The canvas guides founders to define user problems, articulate unique XR value propositions, evaluate usability factors such as the motion-based interaction load, consider social/virtual economy opportunities, and plan for long term scalability. Unlike generalized models, specialized blocks prompt the consideration of critical XR factors from the outset. The canvas was evaluated through expert testing with startup consultants on five failed venture cases. The results highlighted the tool's effectiveness in surfacing overlooked usability issues and technology constraints upfront, enhancing the viability of future metaverse startups.

Digital Computing-in-Memory (DCIM) is an innovative technology that integrates multiply-accumulation (MAC) logic directly into memory arrays to enhance the performance of modern AI computing. However, the need for customized memory cells and logic components currently necessitates significant manual effort in DCIM design. Existing tools for facilitating DCIM macro designs struggle to optimize subcircuit synthesis to meet user-defined performance criteria, thereby limiting the potential system-level acceleration that DCIM can offer. To address these challenges and enable agile design of DCIM macros with optimal architectures, we present SynDCIM, a performance-aware DCIM compiler that employs multi-spec-oriented subcircuit synthesis. SynDCIM features an automated performance-to-layout generation process that aligns with user-defined performance expectations. This is supported by a scalable subcircuit library and a multi-spec-oriented searching algorithm for effective subcircuit synthesis. The effectiveness of SynDCIM is demonstrated through extensive experiments and validated with a test chip fabricated in a 40nm CMOS process. Cryo-Electron Tomography (Cryo-ET) enables detailed 3D visualization of cellular structures in near-native states but suffers from low signal-to-noise ratio due to imaging constraints. Traditional denoising methods and supervised learning approaches often struggle with complex noise patterns and the lack of paired datasets. Self-supervised methods, which utilize noisy input itself as a target, have been studied; however, existing Cryo-ET self-supervised denoising methods face significant challenges due to losing information during training and the learned incomplete noise patterns. In this paper, we propose a novel self-supervised learning model that denoises Cryo-ET volumetric images using a single noisy volume. Our method features a U-shape J-invariant blind spot network with sparse centrally masked convolutions, dilated channel attention blocks, and volume unshuffle/shuffle technique. The volume-unshuffle/shuffle technique expands receptive fields and utilizes multi-scale representations, significantly improving noise reduction and structural preservation. We conducted a comprehensive analysis of the magnetic and electronic transport properties of the layered chalcogenide Cr$_{1+\delta}$Te$_2$ in its single crystalline form. This material exhibits a ferromagnetic transition at a critical temperature of $T_C = 191$ K, characterized by significant thermal hysteresis in the magnetization data below this temperature. Measurements of isothermal magnetization, magnetocaloric effect, and magnetoresistance indicate that the system exhibits strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy, with the $c$-axis serving as the easy axis of magnetization. The Cr$_{1+\delta}$Te$_2$ compound shows pronounced anomalous Hall effect (AHE); however, existing experimental and theoretical data do not provide a clear understanding of the nature and origin of this phenomenon. Our experimental findings suggest that the skew scattering mechanism primarily accounts for the observed AHE. In contrast, our theoretical study reveals the presence of gapped nodal points accompanied by non-zero Berry Curvature, which are expected to contribute towards intrinsic AHE. A detailed analysis of the electronic band structure, obtained through density functional theory calculations, reveals that the Berry Curvature at different nodal points exhibit both positive and negative signs. These opposing contributions largely cancel each other out, thereby significantly diminishing the intrinsic contribution to the AHE., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

Here, we present the outcomes from the second Large Language Model (LLM) Hackathon for Applications in Materials Science and Chemistry, which engaged participants across global hybrid locations, resulting in 34 team submissions. The submissions spanned seven key application areas and demonstrated the diverse utility of LLMs for applications in (1) molecular and material property prediction; (2) molecular and material design; (3) automation and novel interfaces; (4) scientific communication and education; (5) research data management and automation; (6) hypothesis generation and evaluation; and (7) knowledge extraction and reasoning from scientific literature. Each team submission is presented in a summary table with links to the code and as brief papers in the appendix. Beyond team results, we discuss the hackathon event and its hybrid format, which included physical hubs in Toronto, Montreal, San Francisco, Berlin, Lausanne, and Tokyo, alongside a global online hub to enable local and virtual collaboration. Overall, the event highlighted significant improvements in LLM capabilities since the previous year's hackathon, suggesting continued expansion of LLMs for applications in materials science and chemistry research. The exponential growth of text-based data in domains such as healthcare, education, and social sciences has outpaced the capacity of traditional qualitative analysis methods, which are time-intensive and prone to subjectivity. Large Language Models (LLMs), powered by advanced generative AI, have emerged as transformative tools capable of automating and enhancing qualitative analysis. This study systematically maps the literature on the use of LLMs for qualitative research, exploring their application contexts, configurations, methodologies, and evaluation metrics. Findings reveal that LLMs are utilized across diverse fields, demonstrating the potential to automate processes traditionally requiring extensive human input. However, challenges such as reliance on prompt engineering, occasional inaccuracies, and contextual limitations remain significant barriers. This research highlights opportunities for integrating LLMs with human expertise, improving model robustness, and refining evaluation methodologies. In the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence (AI), the identification, documentation, and mitigation of vulnerabilities are paramount to ensuring robust and secure systems. This paper discusses the minimum elements for AI vulnerability management and the establishment of an Artificial Intelligence Vulnerability Database (AIVD). It presents standardized formats and protocols for disclosing, analyzing, cataloging, and documenting AI vulnerabilities. It discusses how such an AI incident database must extend beyond the traditional scope of vulnerabilities by focusing on the unique aspects of AI systems. Additionally, this paper highlights challenges and gaps in AI Vulnerability Management, including the need for new severity scores, weakness enumeration systems, and comprehensive mitigation strategies specifically designed to address the multifaceted nature of AI vulnerabilities.

Renal Cell Carcinoma is typically asymptomatic at the early stages for many patients. This leads to a late diagnosis of the tumor, where the curability likelihood is lower, and makes the mortality rate of Renal Cell Carcinoma high, with respect to its incidence rate. To increase the survival chance, a fast and correct categorization of the tumor subtype is paramount. Nowadays, computerized methods, based on artificial intelligence, represent an interesting opportunity to improve the productivity and the objectivity of the microscopy-based Renal Cell Carcinoma diagnosis. Nonetheless, much of their exploitation is hampered by the paucity of annotated dataset, essential for a proficient training of supervised machine learning technologies. This study sets out to investigate a novel self supervised training strategy for machine learning diagnostic tools, based on the multi-resolution nature of the histological samples. We aim at reducing the need of annotated dataset, without significantly reducing the accuracy of the tool. We demonstrate the classification capability of our tool on a whole slide imaging dataset for Renal Cancer subtyping, and we compare our solution with several state-of-the-art classification counterparts.

Software bots, extensively adopted by Open Source Software (OSS) projects, support developers across several activities, from automating predefined tasks to generating code that aids software engineers. However, with the growing prominence of bots, questions have emerged regarding the extension to which they truly assist or hinder software engineers in their routine tasks. To address this, an exploratory survey was conducted with 37 software engineers to gather insights into their views on the use of bots within the software development process. The findings suggest that bots are present across multiple phases of the software development lifecycle, providing daily support to professionals by enhancing productivity and facilitating task automation. We consider a stylized formal model of public transportation, where a set of agents need to travel along a given road, and there is a bus that runs the length of this road. Each agent has a left terminal and a right terminal between which they wish to travel; they can walk all the way, or walk to/from the nearest stop and use the bus for the rest of their journey. The bus can make a fixed number of stops, and the planner needs to select locations for these stops. We study notions of efficiency and fairness for this setting. First, we give a polynomial-time algorithm for computing a solution that minimizes the total travel time; our approach can capture further extensions of the base model, such as more general cost functions or existing infrastructure. Second, we develop a polynomial-time algorithm that outputs solutions with provable fairness guarantees (such as a variant of the justified representation axiom or $2$-approximate core) as long as the agents' costs only depend on the distance they need to walk. Our simulations indicate that our algorithm almost always outputs fair solutions, even for parameter regimes that do not admit theoretical guarantees.

This paper conducts a comprehensive system-level analysis of mm-Wave full-duplex transceivers, focusing on a receiver employing a four-stage self-interference cancellation (SIC) process. The analysis aims to optimize the noise and linearity performance requirements of each transceiver block, ensuring that the self-interference (SI) signal does not compromise the receiver's error vector magnitude (EVM) for an OFDM 64-QAM signal. Additionally, the necessary SIC for each stage is calculated to establish feasible noise and linearity specifications for a CMOS-based implementation. The resulting specifications are subsequently validated within a MATLAB Simulink environment, confirming the accuracy of the computed requirements for each block.

Mobile banking apps have transformed the banking sector by offering customers with convenient, secure and easily accessible financial services. Even so, it is crucial for banks and the mobile banking apps developers to understand the factors that influence the utilisation of these apps among Malaysian consumer. This study will examine the influence of several factors which are security concerns, service quality, technological factors and convenience, on the usage of mobile banking apps. The study aims to discover the key factors that affect the usage of mobile banking apps. A quantitative research method was utilised, which involves the collection of data from an online survey. The survey managed to collect data from 152 respondents who are above 18 years old and users of mobile banking apps in Malaysia. The data was analysed with correlation analyses to examine the relationship between the variables. A multinominal logistic regression model was used as a predictive model to predict the usage of mobile banking apps. This study contributes to existing researches by highlighting the importance of security and convenience into the development and marketing strategies of mobile banking apps. The study can help them conduct improvements on their current apps and thus increase the usage of mobile banking apps among consumers in Malaysia.

This paper explores distributed Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) by introducing a cooperative dimension that enhances adaptability and performance. It focuses on strategically deploying multiple RISs to improve connectivity with the Base Station (BS) and among RISs, thereby aiding users in areas with weak BS coverage and enhancing spatial multiplexing gains. Each RIS can function as a primary surface to directly support users or as an intermediary surface to reflect signals to another primary surface. This dual functionality enables flexible responses to changing conditions. We implement an inter-RIS signal focusing design for phase shifts, creating a tailored codebook for precise control over signal direction. This design considers the interplay of incidence and reflection angles to maximize reflected signal power, based on the RIS response function and the physical properties of the RIS elements.

This paper studies the problem of optimal geographic placement of water quality (WQ) sensors in drinking water distribution networks (WDNs), with a specific focus on chlorine transport, decay, and reaction models. Such models are traditionally used as suitable proxies for WQ. The literature on this topic is indeed inveterate, but has a key limitation: it utilizes simplified single-species decay and reaction models that do not capture WQ transients for nonlinear, multi-species interactions. This results in sensor placements that do not account for nonlinear WQ dynamics. Furthermore, and as WQ simulations are parameterized by hydraulic profiles and demand patterns, the placement of sensors are often hydraulics-dependent. This study produces a simple algorithm that addresses the two aforementioned limitations. The presented algorithm is grounded in nonlinear dynamic system sciences and observability theory, and yields sensor placements that are robust to hydraulic changes. Thorough case studies on benchmark water networks are provided. The key findings provide practical recommendations for WDN operators.

Widely distributed misinformation shared across social media channels is a pressing issue that poses a significant threat to many aspects of society's well-being. Inaccurate shared information causes confusion, can adversely affect mental health, and can lead to mis-informed decision-making. Therefore, it is important to implement proactive measures to intervene and curb the spread of misinformation where possible. This has prompted scholars to investigate a variety of intervention strategies for misinformation sharing on social media. This study explores the typology of intervention strategies for addressing misinformation sharing on social media, identifying 4 important clusters - cognition-based, automated-based, information-based, and hybrid-based. The literature selection process utilized the PRISMA method to ensure a systematic and comprehensive analysis of relevant literature while maintaining transparency and reproducibility. A total of 139 articles published from 2013-2023 were then analyzed. Meanwhile, bibliometric analyses were conducted using performance analysis and science mapping techniques for the typology development. A comparative analysis of the typology was conducted to reveal patterns and evolution in the field. This provides valuable insights for both theory and practical applications. Overall, the study concludes that scholarly contributions to scientific research and publication help to address research gaps and expand knowledge in this field. The atom-bond connectivity ($ABC$) index is a novel topological index that Estrada introduced in Estrada et al. (1998). The spatio-temporal relations of impacts of extreme events and their drivers in climate data are not fully understood and there is a need of machine learning approaches to identify such spatio-temporal relations from data. The task, however, is very challenging since there are time delays between extremes and their drivers, and the spatial response of such drivers is inhomogeneous. In this work, we propose a first approach and benchmarks to tackle this challenge. Our approach is trained end-to-end to predict spatio-temporally extremes and spatio-temporally drivers in the physical input variables jointly. By enforcing the network to predict extremes from spatio-temporal binary masks of identified drivers, the network successfully identifies drivers that are correlated with extremes. We evaluate our approach on three newly created synthetic benchmarks, where two of them are based on remote sensing or reanalysis climate data, and on two real-world reanalysis datasets. We introduce a model of fair division with market values, where indivisible goods must be partitioned among agents with (additive) subjective valuations, and each good additionally has a market value. The market valuation can be viewed as a separate additive valuation that holds identically across all the agents. We seek allocations that are simultaneously fair with respect to the subjective valuations and with respect to the market valuation. We show that an allocation that satisfies stochastically-dominant envy-freeness up to one good (SD-EF1) with respect to both the subjective valuations and the market valuation does not always exist, but the weaker guarantee of EF1 with respect to the subjective valuations along with SD-EF1 with respect to the market valuation can be guaranteed. We also study a number of other guarantees such as Pareto optimality, EFX, and MMS. In addition, we explore non-additive valuations and extend our model to cake-cutting. Along the way, we identify several tantalizing open questions.

Traffic prediction is a vital component of intelligent transportation systems. By reasoning about traffic patterns in both the spatial and temporal dimensions, accurate and interpretable predictions can be provided. A considerable challenge in traffic prediction lies in handling the diverse data distributions caused by vastly different traffic conditions occurring at different locations. LLMs have been a dominant solution due to their remarkable capacity to adapt to new datasets with very few labeled data samples, i.e., few-shot adaptability. However, existing forecasting techniques mainly focus on extracting local graph information and forming a text-like prompt, leaving LLM- based traffic prediction an open problem. This work presents a probabilistic LLM for traffic forecasting with three highlights. We propose a graph-aware LLM for traffic prediction that considers proximal traffic information. Specifically, by considering the traffic of neighboring nodes as covariates, our model outperforms the corresponding time-series LLM. Furthermore, we adopt a lightweight approach for efficient domain adaptation when facing new data distributions in few-shot fashion. The comparative experiment demonstrates the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art LLM-based methods and the traditional GNN- based supervised approaches. Hyperspectral imaging systems based on multiple-beam interference (MBI), such as Fabry-Perot interferometry, are attracting interest due to their compact design, high throughput, and fine resolution. Unlike dispersive devices, which measure spectra directly, the desired spectra in interferometric systems are reconstructed from measured interferograms. Although the response of MBI devices is modeled by the Airy function, existing reconstruction techniques are often limited to Fourier-transform spectroscopy, which is tailored for two-beam interference (TBI). These methods impose limitations for MBI and are susceptible to non-idealities like irregular sampling and noise, highlighting the need for an in-depth numerical framework. To fill this gap, we propose a rigorous taxonomy of the TBI and MBI instrument description and propose a unified Bayesian formulation which both embeds the description of existing literature works and adds some of the real-world non-idealities of the acquisition process. Under this framework, we provide a comprehensive review of spectroscopy forward and inverse models. In the forward model, we propose a thorough analysis of the discretization of the continuous model and the ill-posedness of the problem. In the inverse model, we extend the range of existing solutions for spectrum reconstruction, framing them as an optimization problem. Specifically, we provide a progressive comparative analysis of reconstruction methods from more specific to more general scenarios, up to employing the proposed Bayesian framework with prior knowledge, such as sparsity constraints. While reinforcement learning (RL) agents often perform well during training, they can struggle with distribution shift in real-world deployments. One particularly severe risk of distribution shift is goal misgeneralization, where the agent learns a proxy goal that coincides with the true goal during training but not during deployment. In this paper, we explore whether allowing an agent to ask for help from a supervisor in unfamiliar situations can mitigate this issue. We focus on agents trained with PPO in the CoinRun environment, a setting known to exhibit goal misgeneralization. We evaluate multiple methods for determining when the agent should request help and find that asking for help consistently improves performance. However, we also find that methods based on the agent's internal state fail to proactively request help, instead waiting until mistakes have already occurred. Further investigation suggests that the agent's internal state does not represent the coin at all, highlighting the importance of learning nuanced representations, the risks of ignoring everything not immediately relevant to reward, and the necessity of developing ask-for-help strategies tailored to the agent's training algorithm., Comment: SATA Workshop @ NeurIPS 2024 (Towards Safe and Trustworthy Agents)

We prove the asymptotic stability of the high speed solitary waves to the Benjamin equation. This is done by establishing a Liouville property for the nonlinear evolution of the Benjamin equation around these solitary waves. To do this, inspired by Kenig-Martel-Robbiano 2011, we make use of the KdV limit of the Benjamin equation together with known rigidity property of the KdV flow. The main difficulties are linked to the presence of the Hilbert transform, that is a non-local operator, as well as the non-positivity of the quadratic part of the energy in the case $ \gamma<0$ which is the physical case.

We study a fair division model where indivisible items arrive sequentially, and must be allocated immediately and irrevocably. Previous work on online fair division has shown impossibility results in achieving approximate envy-freeness under these constraints. In contrast, we consider an informed setting where the algorithm has complete knowledge of future items, and aim to ensure that the cumulative allocation at each round satisfies approximate envy-freeness -- which we define as temporal envy-freeness up to one item (TEF1). We focus on settings where items can be exclusively goods or exclusively chores. For goods, while TEF1 allocations may not always exist, we identify several special cases where they do -- two agents, two item types, generalized binary valuations, unimodal preferences -- and provide polynomial-time algorithms for these cases. We also prove that determining the existence of a TEF1 allocation is NP-hard. For chores, we establish analogous results for the special cases, but present a slightly weaker intractability result. We also establish the incompatibility between TEF1 and Pareto-optimality, with the implication that it is intractable to find a TEF1 allocation that maximizes any $p$-mean welfare, even for two agents.

Anatomical landmarks are vital in medical imaging for navigation and anomaly detection. Modern large language models (LLMs), like Llama-2, offer promise for automating the mapping of these landmarks in free-text radiology reports to corresponding positions in image data. Recent studies propose LLMs may develop coherent representations of generative processes. Motivated by these insights, we investigated whether LLMs accurately represent the spatial positions of anatomical landmarks. Through experiments with Llama-2 models, we found that they can linearly represent anatomical landmarks in space with considerable robustness to different prompts. Though ubiquitous in many engineering applications, including drug delivery, the compound droplet hydrodynamics in confined geometries have been barely surveyed. For the first time, this study thoroughly investigates the hydrodynamics of a ferrofluid compound droplet (FCD) during its migration in a microchannel under the presence of a pressure-driven flow and a uniform external magnetic field (UEMF) to manipulate its morphology and retard its breakup. Finite difference and phase-field multiple-relaxation time lattice Boltzmann approaches are coupled to determine the magnetic field and ternary flow system, respectively. Firstly, the influence of the magnetic Bond number (Bo) on the FCD morphology is explored depending on whether the core or shell is ferrofluid when the UEMF is applied along {\alpha}=0{\deg} and {\alpha}=90{\deg} relative to the fluid flow. It is ascertained that imposing the UEMF at {\alpha}=0{\deg} when the shell is ferrofluid can postpone the breakup. Intriguingly, when the core is ferrofluid, strengthening the UEMF enlarges the shell deformation. Afterward, the effects of the Capillary number (Ca), density ratio, viscosity ratio, radius ratio, and surface tension coefficients are scrutinized on the FCD deformation and breakup. The results indicate that augmenting the core-to-shell viscosity and density ratios accelerates the breakup process. Additionally, surface tension between the core and shell suppresses the core deformation. Moreover, increasing the Ca number intensifies the viscous drag force exerted on the shell, flattening its rear side, which causes a triangular-like configuration. Recent advancements in brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have enabled the decoding of lexical tones from intracranial recordings, offering the potential to restore the communication abilities of speech-impaired tonal language speakers. However, data heterogeneity induced by both physiological and instrumental factors poses a significant challenge for unified invasive brain tone decoding. Traditional subject-specific models, which operate under a heterogeneous decoding paradigm, fail to capture generalized neural representations and cannot effectively leverage data across subjects. To address these limitations, we introduce Homogeneity-Heterogeneity Disentangled Learning for neural Representations (H2DiLR), a novel framework that disentangles and learns both the homogeneity and heterogeneity from intracranial recordings across multiple subjects. To evaluate H2DiLR, we collected stereoelectroencephalography (sEEG) data from multiple participants reading Mandarin materials comprising 407 syllables, representing nearly all Mandarin characters. Extensive experiments demonstrate that H2DiLR, as a unified decoding paradigm, significantly outperforms the conventional heterogeneous decoding approach. We introduce a technique for extracting microstructural geometry from NMR lineshape analysis in porous materials at angstrom-scale resolution with the use of weak magnetic field gradients. Diverging from the generally held view of FID signals undergoing simple exponential decay, we show that a detailed analysis of the line shape can unravel structural geometry on much smaller scales than previously thought. While the original q-space PFG NMR relies on strong magnetic field gradients in order to achieve high spatial resolution, our current approach reaches comparable or higher resolution using much weaker gradients. As a model system, we simulated gas diffusion for xenon confined within carbon nanotubes over a range of temperatures and nanotube diameters in order to unveil manifestations of confinement in the diffusion behavior. We report a multiscale scheme that couples the above MD simulations with the generalized Langevin equation to estimate the transport properties of interest for this problem, such as diffusivity coefficients and NMR lineshapes, using the Green-Kubo correlation function to correctly evaluate time-dependent diffusion. Our results highlight how NMR methodologies can be adapted as effective means towards structural investigation at very small scales when dealing with complicated geometries. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of the data preparation pipeline developed for the OpenGPT-X project, a large-scale initiative aimed at creating open and high-performance multilingual large language models (LLMs). The project goal is to deliver models that cover all major European languages, with a particular focus on real-world applications within the European Union. We explain all data processing steps, starting with the data selection and requirement definition to the preparation of the final datasets for model training. We distinguish between curated data and web data, as each of these categories is handled by distinct pipelines, with curated data undergoing minimal filtering and web data requiring extensive filtering and deduplication. This distinction guided the development of specialized algorithmic solutions for both pipelines. In addition to describing the processing methodologies, we provide an in-depth analysis of the datasets, increasing transparency and alignment with European data regulations. Finally, we share key insights and challenges faced during the project, offering recommendations for future endeavors in large-scale multilingual data preparation for LLMs.

Adam outperforms SGD when training language models. Yet this advantage is not well-understood theoretically -- previous convergence analysis for Adam and SGD mainly focuses on the number of steps $T$ and is already minimax-optimal in non-convex cases, which are both $\widetilde{O}(T^{-1/4})$. In this work, we argue that the exploitation of nice $\ell_\infty$-geometry is the key advantage of Adam over SGD. More specifically, we give a new convergence analysis for Adam under novel assumptions that loss is smooth under $\ell_\infty$-geometry rather than the more common $\ell_2$-geometry, which yields a much better empirical smoothness constant for GPT-2 and ResNet models. Our experiments confirm that Adam performs much worse when the favorable $\ell_\infty$-geometry is changed while SGD provably remains unaffected. We also extend the convergence analysis to blockwise Adam under novel blockwise smoothness assumptions.

Zero-order (ZO) optimization is a powerful tool for dealing with realistic constraints. On the other hand, the gradient-tracking (GT) technique proved to be an efficient method for distributed optimization aiming to achieve consensus. However, it is a first-order (FO) method that requires knowledge of the gradient, which is not always possible in practice. In this work, we introduce a zero-order distributed optimization method based on a one-point estimate of the gradient tracking technique. We prove that this new technique converges with a single noisy function query at a time in the non-convex setting. We then establish a convergence rate of $O(\frac{1}{\sqrt[3]{K}})$ after a number of iterations K, which competes with that of $O(\frac{1}{\sqrt[4]{K}})$ of its centralized counterparts. In $f(T)$ gravity, the theory modifies the gravitational action by introducing a function of the torsion scalar $T$. This approach allows for a different treatment of gravity than general relativity, particularly in cosmological contexts. Dynamical system analysis is a powerful tool for exploring the stability and behavior of cosmological solutions within this framework. The dynamical system analysis involves examining the phase space of the cosmological equations derived from the $f(T)$ model. This analysis helps identify fixed points, stability, and the evolution of the universe's scale factor. Therefore, in the following, we first review the main equations of the $f(T)$ gravity model. This work proposes a strategy for organising quadrotors around a payload to enable hovering without external stimuli, together with a MATLAB software for modelling the dynamics of a quadrotor-payload system. Based on geometric concepts, the proposed design keeps the payload and system centre of mass aligned. Hovering tests that are successful confirm the method's efficiency. Moreover, the algorithm is improved to take thrust capacities and propeller distances into account, calculating the minimum number of quadrotors needed for hovering. The algorithm's effectiveness is demonstrated by numerical examples, which reveal that larger quadrotors may require fewer units while smaller ones give greater flexibility.
