Search

Maser emission of SiO, H$_2$O and, OH is widespread in Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars with oxygen(O)-rich envelopes. This emission quickly disappear during the post-AGB phase and is extremely rare in planetary nebulae (PN). So far, only eight PNe have been confirmed to show OH and/or H$_2$O maser emission, and none has ever been found to show SiO maser emission. We intend to obtain the first detection of a SiO maser from a PNe. Such a detection would provide us with a useful tool to probe mass-loss in PNe at a scales of a few AU from the central star, much shorter than the scales traced by H$_2$ or OH masers. We compiled two different samples. The first one comprises all known PNe with confirmed OH and/or H$_2$O maser emission, as well as two candidate PNe showing OH masers. For the second sample we compiled single-dish SiO maser detections in the literature, and compared them with catalogs of PNe and radio continuum emission (which could trace photoionized gas in a PNe). We identified five targets (either PN or radio continuum sources) within the beam of the single-dish SiO maser observations. We then carried out interferometric observations of both samples with the Australia Telescope Compact Array, to confirm the spatial association between continuum and SiO maser emission. We found no SiO maser emission associated with any confirmed or candidate PN. In all targets, except IRAS 17390$-$3014, there is no spatial coincidence between SiO masers and radio continuum emission. While in IRAS 17390$-$3014 we cannot completely rule out a possible association, it is unlikely that the radio continuum emission arises from a planetary nebula. The absence of SiO maser emission in PNe showing OH or H$_2$O masers is of special interest, since thermal SiO emission has been reported in at least one of these targets, indicating that SiO molecules can be present in gas phase., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables. Identifying mutations of SARS-CoV-2 strains associated with their phenotypic changes is critical for pandemic prediction and prevention. We compared an explainable convolutional neural network (CNN) and the traditional genome-wide association study (GWAS) on the mutations associated with WHO labels of SARS-CoV-2, a proxy for virulence phenotypes. We trained a CNN classification model that can predict genomic sequences into Variants of Concern (VOCs), and then applied Shapley Additive explanations (SHAP) model to identify mutations that are important for the correct predictions. For comparison, we performed traditional GWAS to identify mutations associated with VOCs. Comparison of the two approaches shows that the explainable neural network approach can more effectively reveal known nucleotide substitutions associated with VOCs, such as those in the spike gene regions. Our results suggest that explainable neural networks for genomic sequences offer a promising alternative to the traditional genome wide analysis approaches.

IRAS 22568+6141 has been classified as a low-ionisation planetary nebula (PN) and presents non-thermal radio continuum emission, which could be a signature of nascent PNe. We present intermediate-resolution long-slit spectra obtained in 2021 and 2023, high-resolution long-slit spectra taken in 2023, and a light curve at the $r$-filter between 1953 and 2019, that reveal changes in IRAS 22568+6141 with timescales of decades and a few years. The object underwent an energetic event around 1990 that suddenly increased its brightness which has been fading since then. A comparison with a published spectrum from 1988 shows an increase of the H$\beta$ flux in 2021 by factor of $\simeq$6 and the [O III] emission lines that were absent in 1988. Between 2021 and 2023 the H$\beta$ flux decreased by a factor of $\simeq$1.7, and the [O III] emission lines almost vanished. These results and the variability observed in other emission lines indicate that IRAS 22568+6141 is recombining and cooling down between 2021 and 2023, and probably since 2005, as suggested by archival radio continuum and mid-IR observations. The intermediate- and high-resolution spectra show that the excitation of the emission lines is dominated by shocks in 2021 and 2023, and, probably, also in 1988, which may be related to the non-thermal radio continuum emission from the object. Although the variability might be due to changes in the physical conditions in the shocks or in a nova-like eruption, it accommodates better to that expected from a late thermal pulse, which is further suggested by a comparison with other similar objects. We analyze IceCube public data from its IC86 configuration, namely PSTracks event selection, to search for pseudo-Dirac signatures in high-energy neutrinos from astrophysical sources. Neutrino flux from astrophysical sources is reduced in the pseudo-Dirac scenario due to conversion of active-to-sterile neutrinos as compared to the neutrino oscillation scenario of only three active neutrinos over astrophysical distances. We fit IceCube data using astrophysical flux models for three point-like sources in both scenarios and constrain the active-sterile mass-square-difference in the absence of any evidence for pseudo-Dirac scenario. We find that a common mass-squared-difference $\delta m^2$ for all three flavors can be constrained as $\delta m^2 \lesssim 2.2 \times 10^{-19} eV^2$ for the source NGC 1068, $\delta m^2 \lesssim 1.2 \times 10^{-20} eV^2$ for the source TXS 0506+056, and $\delta m^2 \lesssim 1.5 \times 10^{-21} eV^2$ for the source PKS 1424+240 at 90% C.L. Large language models (LLMs) allow us to generate high-quality human-like text. One interesting task in natural language processing (NLP) is named entity recognition (NER), which seeks to detect mentions of relevant information in documents. This paper presents llmNER, a Python library for implementing zero-shot and few-shot NER with LLMs; by providing an easy-to-use interface, llmNER can compose prompts, query the model, and parse the completion returned by the LLM. Also, the library enables the user to perform prompt engineering efficiently by providing a simple interface to test multiple variables. We validated our software on two NER tasks to show the library's flexibility. llmNER aims to push the boundaries of in-context learning research by removing the barrier of the prompting and parsing steps.

The evolution of asymptotic giant branch stars from the spherical symmetry into the diverse shapes of planetary nebulae (PNe) is a topic of intensive research. Young PNe provide a unique opportunity to characterize the onset of this transitional phase. In particular, OH maser-emitting PNe (OHPNe) are considered nascent PNe. In fact, only 6 OHPNe have been confirmed to date. In order to identify and characterize more OHPNe, we processed the unpublished continuum data of the interferometric follow-up of the Southern Parkes Large-Area Survey in Hydroxyl (SPLASH). We then matched the interferometric positions of OH maser and radio continuum emission, considering the latter as a possible tracer of free-free emission from photoionized gas, characteristic of PNe. We report 8 objects with a positive coincidence, 4 of which are classified as candidate OHPNe here for the first time (IRAS 16372-4808, IRAS 17494-2645, IRAS 18019-2216 and OH 341.6811+00.2634). Available evidence strongly indicates that they are evolved stars, while the comparison with confirmed OHPNe indicates that they are likely to be PNe. Their final confirmation as bona fide PNe, however, requires optical/infrared spectroscopy. The obtained spectral indices of the radio continuum emission (between $\simeq$ 0.4 - 1.3) are consistent with partially optically thick free-free emission from photoionized gas. Also, they cluster in the same region of a WISE colour-colour diagram as that of the confirmed OHPNe ($9.5 \lesssim [3.4]-[22] \lesssim 13.5$, and $4.0 \lesssim [4.6]-[12] \lesssim 7.0$), thus this diagram could help to identify more OHPNe candidates in the future., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, 5 tables. Recently, the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) reported the discovery of 12 ultrahigh-energy (UHE; $\mathrm{\varepsilon} \ge 100$ TeV) gamma-ray sources located in the Galactic plane. A few of these UHE gamma-ray emitting regions are in spatial coincidence with pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe). We consider a sample of five sources; two of them are LHAASO sources (LHAASO J1908+0621 and LHAASO J2226+6057) and the remaining three are GeV-TeV gamma-ray emitters. In addition, X-rays, radio observations, or upper limits are also available for these objects. We study multiwavelength radiation from these sources by considering a PWN origin, where the emission is powered by the spin-down luminosity of the associated pulsars. In this leptonic emission model, the electron population is calculated at different times under the radiative (synchrotron and inverse-Compton) and adiabatic cooling. We also include the onset of the reverberation phase for the PWN, by assuming radially symmetric expansion. However, in this work, we find that multiwavelength emission can be interpreted before the onset of this phase. The maximum energy of the electrons based on the spectral fit is found to be above 0.1 PeV and close to 1 PeV. For LHAASO J2226+6057, using its observations in radio to UHE gamma-rays, we find that UHE gamma-rays can be interpreted using electrons with maximum energy of 1 PeV. IC\,4997 is a planetary nebula well known by its variability. We present high-resolution spectra of IC\,4997 obtained in 1993, 2019, and 2020 that reveal changes in the H$\alpha$ and [N\,{\sc ii}] emission line profiles, which had never been reported for this object. The H$\alpha$ P\,Cygni emission profile observed in 1993 changed to a single-peaked profile in 2019--2020, implying that the stellar wind has largely weakened. The very broad H$\alpha$ emission wings narrowed by a factor of $\sim$2 between 1993 and 2019--2020, indicating that the efficiency of the Rayleigh--Raman scattering has noticeably decreased. A high-velocity [N\,{\sc ii}] nebular component detected in 1993 is missing in 2019 and 2020, probably due to a decrease in its electron density. A correlation exists between the strength of the stellar wind and the episodic ($\sim$50--60\,yr) variation in the [O\,{\sc iii}]$\lambda$4363/H$\gamma$ line intensity ratio, suggesting that an episodic, smoothly variable stellar wind is the main cause of the variability of IC\,4997. Monitoring of that intensity ratio and of the H$\alpha$ emission line profile in the coming years and new multiwavelength observations are key to unveiling the ongoing processes in IC\,4997 and constraining the origin of the wind variability., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics Letters, 5 pages, 3 figures, 1 Table

We present high-resolution, long-slit optical spectra and images of the planetary nebula NGC1514. The position velocity maps of the [OIII] emission line reveal complex kinematics with multiple structures. A morpho-kinematical analysis suggests an inner shell, originally spherical and now distorted by several bubbles, and an attached outer shell. The two well-defined, mid-infrared rings of NGC1514 are not detected in our high-resolution, long-slit spectra, which prevented us from doing a kinematical analysis of them. Based exclusively on their morphology, we propose a barrel-like structure to explain the rings. Several ejection processes have been possibly involved in the formation of the nebula although a time sequence is difficult to establish with the current data. We also analyze intermediate-resolution, long-slit spectra with the goal of studying the physical parameters and chemical abundances of NGC1514. The nebular spectra reveal a moderate-excitation nebula with weak emission lines of [ArIII], [NeIII], HeI and HeII. No [NII] neither other low-excitation emission lines are detected. This work presents an adaptive architecture that performs online learning and faces catastrophic forgetting issues by means of episodic memories and prediction-error driven memory consolidation. In line with evidences from the cognitive science and neuroscience, memories are retained depending on their congruency with the prior knowledge stored in the system. This is estimated in terms of prediction error resulting from a generative model. Moreover, this AI system is transferred onto an innovative application in the horticulture industry: the learning and transfer of greenhouse models. The mixing of three active neutrino flavors is parameterized by the unitary PMNS matrix. If there are more than three neutrino flavors and if the extra generations are heavy isosinglets, the effective $3\times 3$ mixing matrix for the three active neutrinos will be non-unitary. We have analyzed the latest T2K and \nova data with the hypothesis of non-unitary mixing of the active neutrinos. We found that the 2019 NO$\nu$A data slightly (at $\sim 1\, \sigma$ C.L.) prefer the non-unitary mixing over unitary mixing. In fact, allowing the non-unitary mixing brings the \nova best-fit point in the $\sin^2\theta_{23}-\delta_{CP}$ plane closer to the T2K best-fit point. The 2019 T2K data, on the other hand, cannot rule out any of the two mixing schemes. A combined analysis of the NO$\nu$A and T2K 2019 data prefers the non-unitary mixing at $1\, \sigma$ C.L.. We derive constraints on the non-unitary mixing parameters using the best-fit to the combined NO$\nu$A and T2K data. These constraints are weaker than previously found. The latest 2020 data from both the experiments prefer non-unitarity over unitary mixing at $1\, \sigma$ C.L. The combined analysis preferes non-unitarity at $2\, \sigma$ C.L. This work deals with the portability of greenhouse models, as we believe that this is a challenge to their practical usage in control strategies under production conditions. We address this task by means of adaptive neural networks, which re-adjust their weights when transferred to new conditions. Such an adaptive account for computational models is typical of the field of developmental robotics, which investigates learning of motor control in artificial systems inspired on infants development. Similarly to robots, greenhouses are complex systems comprising technical and biological elements, whose state can be measured and modified through control actions. We present an adaptive model architecture to perform online learning on greenhouse models. This learning process makes use of an episodic memory and of online re-training. This allows for adaptation without the need for a complete new training, which might be prohibitive if the data under the new conditions is scarce. Current experiments focus on how a model of tomato photosynthesis, developed in a research facility, can adapt itself to a new environment in a production greenhouse. Further research will focus on model plasticity by means of adaptive learning rates and management of the episodic memory described in this paper. The models presented as a proof-of-concept estimate the transpiration and photosynthesis of a hydroponic tomato crop by using measurements of the climate as inputs. The models are trained and tested using data from a greenhouse in Berlin, Germany. Thereafter, the adaptive architecture is fed with data from a production greenhouse in southern Germany, where other tomato varieties were grown under different irrigation and climate strategies. In order to collaborate and co-create with humans, an AI system must be capable of both reactive and anticipatory behavior. We present a case study of such a system in the domain of musical improvisation. We consider a duo consisting of a human pianist accompained by an off-the-shelf virtual drummer, and we design an AI system to control the perfomance parameters of the drummer (e.g., patterns, intensity, or complexity) as a function of what the human pianist is playing. The AI system utilizes a model elicited from the musicians and encoded through fuzzy logic. This paper outlines the methodology, design, and development process of this system. An evaluation in public concerts is upcoming. This case study is seen as a step in the broader investigation of anticipation and creative processes in mixed human-robot, or "anthrobotic" systems.

Recent IceCube search results for sterile neutrino increased tension between the combined appearance and disappearance experiments. On the other hand, MiniBooNE latest data confirms at $4.9\sigma$ CL the short-baseline oscillation anomaly. We analyze published IceCube data based on two different active-sterile mixing schemes using one additional sterile neutrino flavor. We present exclusion regions in the parameter ranges $0.01 \le \sin^2 \theta_{24} \le 0.1$ and $0.1~{\rm eV}^2 \le \Delta m^2_{42} \le 10~{\rm eV}^2$ for the mass-mixing and flavor-mixing schemes. Under the more conservative mass-mixing scheme, $3\sigma$ CL allowed regions for the appearance experiment and MiniBooNE latest result are excluded at $\gtrsim 3\sigma$ CL. In case of less-restrictive flavor-mixing scheme, results from the appearance experiments are excluded at $\gtrsim 2\sigma$ CL. We also find that including prompt component of the atmospheric neutrino flux relaxes constraints on sterile mixing for $\Delta m^2_{42} \gtrsim 1~{\rm eV}^2$., Comment: 15 pages and 5 figures. Water fountains are evolved stars showing early stages of collimated mass loss during transition from the asymptotic giant branch, providing valuable insight into the formation of asymmetric planetary nebulae. We report the results of multi-epoch VLBI observations, which determine the spatial and three-dimensional kinematic structure of H2O masers associated with the water fountain IRAS 18113-2503. The masers trace three pairs of high-velocity (~150-300 km/s) bipolar bow shocks on a scale of 0.18'' (~2000 au). The expansion velocities of the bow shocks exhibit an exponential decrease as a function of distance from the central star, which can be explained by an episodic, jet-driven outflow decelerating due to drag forces in a circumstellar envelope. Using our model, we estimate an initial ejection velocity ~840 km/s, a period for the ejections ~10 yr, with the youngest being ~12 yr old, and an average envelope density within the H2O maser region n(H2) ~ 10^6 cm^(-3). We hypothesize that IRAS 18113-2503 hosts a binary central star with a separation of ~10 au, revealing novel clues about the launching mechanisms of high-velocity collimated outflows in water fountains., Comment: Accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society Letters (September 17, 2018). Planetary nebulae are ionized clouds of gas formed by the hydrogen-rich envelopes of low- and intermediate-mass stars ejected at late evolutionary stages. The strong UV flux from their central stars causes a highly stratified ionization structure, with species of higher ionization potential closer to the star. Here we report on the exceptional case of HuBi 1, a double-shell planetary nebula whose inner shell presents emission from low-ionization species close to the star and emission from high-ionization species farther away. Spectral analysis demonstrates that the inner shell of HuBi 1 is excited by shocks, whereas its outer shell is recombining. The anomalous excitation of these shells can be traced to its low-temperature [WC10] central star whose optical brightness has declined continuously by 10 magnitudes in a period of 46 years. Evolutionary models reveal that this star is the descendent of a low-mass star ($\simeq$1.1 $M_\odot$) that has experienced a born-again event whose ejecta shock-excite the inner shell. HuBi 1 represents the missing link in the formation of metal-rich central stars of planetary nebulae from low-mass progenitors, offering unique insight regarding the future evolution of the born-again Sakurai's object. We present continuum and molecular line (CO, C$^{18}$O, HCO$^+$) observations carried out with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array toward the "water fountain" star IRAS 15103-5754, an object that could be the youngest PN known. We detect two continuum sources, separated by $0.39\pm 0.03$ arcsec. The emission from the brighter source seems to arise mainly from ionized gas, thus confirming the PN nature of the object. The molecular line emission is dominated by a circumstellar torus with a diameter of $\simeq 0.6$ arcsec (2000 au) and expanding at $\simeq 23$ km s$^{-1}$. We see at least two gas outflows. The highest-velocity outflow (deprojected velocities up to 250 km s$^{-1}$), traced by the CO lines, shows a biconical morphology, whose axis is misaligned $\simeq 14^\circ$ with respect to the symmetry axis of the torus, and with a different central velocity (by $\simeq 8$ km s$^{-1}$). An additional high-density outflow (traced by HCO$^+$) is oriented nearly perpendicular to the torus. We speculate that IRAS 15103-5754 was a triple stellar system that went through a common envelope phase, and one of the components was ejected in this process. A subsequent low-collimation wind from the remaining binary stripped out gas from the torus, creating the conical outflow. This paper addresses the gain of global fractional regularity in Nikolskii spaces for solutions of a class of quasilinear degenerate equations with $(p,q)$-growth. Indeed, we investigate the effects of the datum on the derivatives of order greater than one of the solutions of the $(p,q)$-Laplacian operator, under Dirichlet's boundary conditions. As it turns out, even in the absence of the so-called Lavrentiev phenomenon and without variations on the order of ellipticity of the equations, the fractional regularity of these solutions ramifies depending on the interplay between the growth parameters $p$, $q$ and the data. Indeed, we are going to exploit the absence of this phenomenon in order to prove the validity up to the boundary of some regularity results, which are known to hold locally, and as well provide new fractional regularity for the associated solutions. In turn, there are obtained certain global regularity results by means of the combination between new a priori estimates and approximations of the differential operators, whereas the nonstandard boundary terms are handled by means of a careful choice for the local frame.

The definition of a concise and effective testbed for Genetic Programming (GP) is a recurrent matter in the research community. This paper takes a new step in this direction, proposing a different approach to measure the quality of the symbolic regression benchmarks quantitatively. The proposed approach is based on meta-learning and uses a set of dataset meta-features---such as the number of examples or output skewness---to describe the datasets. Our idea is to correlate these meta-features with the errors obtained by a GP method. These meta-features define a space of benchmarks that should, ideally, have datasets (points) covering different regions of the space. An initial analysis of 63 datasets showed that current benchmarks are concentrated in a small region of this benchmark space. We also found out that number of instances and output skewness are the most relevant meta-features to GP output error. Advances in Geometric Semantic Genetic Programming (GSGP) have shown that this variant of Genetic Programming (GP) reaches better results than its predecessor for supervised machine learning problems, particularly in the task of symbolic regression. However, by construction, the geometric semantic crossover operator generates individuals that grow exponentially with the number of generations, resulting in solutions with limited use. This paper presents a new method for individual simplification named GSGP with Reduced trees (GSGP-Red). GSGP-Red works by expanding the functions generated by the geometric semantic operators. The resulting expanded function is guaranteed to be a linear combination that, in a second step, has its repeated structures and respective coefficients aggregated. Experiments in 12 real-world datasets show that it is not only possible to create smaller and completely equivalent individuals in competitive computational time, but also to reduce the number of nodes composing them by 58 orders of magnitude, on average., Comment: 8 pages, In proceedings of Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference (GECCO 2018), Kyoto, Japan

The association of at least a dozen ultrahigh-energy cosmic-ray (UHECR) events with energy $\gtrsim 55$ EeV detected by the Pierre Auger Observatory (PAO) from the direction of Centaurus-A, the nearest radio galaxy, supports the scenario of UHECR acceleration in the jets of radio galaxies. In this work, we model radio to very high energy (VHE,$\gtrsim 100$ \rm GeV) $\gamma$-ray emission from Cen A, including GeV hardness detected by Fermi-LAT and TeV emission detected by HESS. We consider two scenarios: (i) Two zone synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) and external-Compton (EC) models, (ii) Two zone SSC, EC and photo-hadronic emission from cosmic ray interactions. The GeV hardness observed by Fermi-LAT can be explained using these two scenarios, where zone 2 EC emission is very important. Hadronic emission in scenario (ii) can explain VHE data with the same spectral slope as obtained through fitting UHECRs from Cen A. The peak luminosity in cosmic ray proton at 1 TeV, to explain the VHE $\gamma$-ray data is $\approx 2.5 \times 10^{46}$ erg/s. In the past years, the phenomenon of fractional regularity has been addressed for a large class of linear and/or quasilinear differential operators, mostly, in terms of certain Besov spaces. As it turned out, for equations governed by the $p$-Laplacian, in general, the regularity of solutions appears in terms of functional spaces with nonlinear order of smoothness. Moreover, despite its own interest, fractional regularity methods may be used as a tool for the investigation of some Partial Differential Equations which are not usually addressed in this manner. Thus, the purpose of the present paper is to exploit such methods in order to provide some results regarding existence and regularity of solutions to a class nonlocal elliptic equations which are linked to the $p$-Laplacian. This is done by means of explicit a priori estimates regarding Lebesgue and Nikolskii spaces, which are part of the present contribution. As a consequence, this approach allows a relaxation on some of the standard conditions employed in this class of problems.

Noise is a consequence of acquiring and pre-processing data from the environment, and shows fluctuations from different sources---e.g., from sensors, signal processing technology or even human error. As a machine learning technique, Genetic Programming (GP) is not immune to this problem, which the field has frequently addressed. Recently, Geometric Semantic Genetic Programming (GSGP), a semantic-aware branch of GP, has shown robustness and high generalization capability. Researchers believe these characteristics may be associated with a lower sensibility to noisy data. However, there is no systematic study on this matter. This paper performs a deep analysis of the GSGP performance over the presence of noise. Using 15 synthetic datasets where noise can be controlled, we added different ratios of noise to the data and compared the results obtained with those of a canonical GP. The results show that, as we increase the percentage of noisy instances, the generalization performance degradation is more pronounced in GSGP than GP. Water fountain stars (WFs) are evolved objects with water masers tracing high-velocity jets (up to several hundreds of km s$^{-1}$). They could represent one of the first manifestations of collimated mass-loss in evolved objects and thus, be a key to understanding the shaping mechanisms of planetary nebulae. Only 13 objects had been confirmed so far as WFs with interferometer observations. We present new observations with the Australia Telescope Compact Array and archival observations with the Very Large Array of four objects that are considered to be WF candidates, mainly based on single-dish observations. We confirm IRAS 17291-2147 and IRAS 18596+0315 (OH 37.1-0.8) as bona fide members of the WF class, with high-velocity water maser emission consistent with tracing bipolar jets. We argue that IRAS 15544-5332 has been wrongly considered as a WF in previous works, since we see no evidence in our data nor in the literature that this object harbours high-velocity water maser emission. In the case of IRAS 19067+0811, we did not detect any water maser emission, so its confirmation as a WF is still pending. With the result of this work, there are 15 objects that can be considered confirmed WFs. We speculate that there is no significant physical difference between WFs and obscured post-AGB stars in general. Markarian 501 is a high-peaked BL Lacertae object and has undergone many major outburst since its discovery in 1996. As a part of the multiwavelength campaign, in the year 2009 this blazar was observed for 4.5 months from March 9 to August 1 and during the period April 17 to May 5 it was observed by both space and ground based observatories covering the entire electromagnetic spectrum. A very strong high energy $\gamma$-ray flare was observed on May 1 by Whipple telescope in the energy range 317 GeV to 5 TeV and the flux was about 10 times higher than the baseline flux. We use the photohadronic model complimented by the extragalactic background radiation (EBL) correction to this very high state flare and have shown that the EBL plays an important role in attenuating the very high energy flux even though Markarian 501 is in the local Universe., Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures, latex. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1501.00973

The extraordinary multi-TeV flare from 1ES 1011 +496 during February-March 2014 was observed by MAGIC telescopes for 17 nights and the average spectrum of the whole period has a non-trivial shape. We have used the photohadronic model and a template EBL model to explain the average spectrum which fits well to the flare data. The spectral index $\alpha$ is the only free parameter in our model. We have also shown that the non-trivial nature of the spectrum is due to the change in the behavior of the optical depth above $\sim 600$ GeV $\gamma$-ray energy accompanied with the high SSC flux., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, LaTeX

The single-mirror small-size telescope (SST-1M) is one of the three proposed designs for the small-size telescopes (SSTs) of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) project. The SST-1M will be equipped with a 4 m-diameter segmented mirror dish and an innovative fully digital camera based on silicon photo-multipliers (SiPMs). Since the SST sub-array will consist of up to 70 telescopes, the challenge is not only to build a telescope with excellent performance, but also to design it so that its components can be commissioned, assembled and tested by industry. In this paper we review the basic steps that led to the design concepts for the SST-1M camera and the ongoing realization of the first prototype, with focus on the innovative solutions adopted for the photodetector plane and the readout and trigger parts of the camera. In addition, we report on results of laboratory measurements on real scale elements that validate the camera design and show that it is capable of matching the CTA requirements of operating up to high-moon-light background conditions., Comment: 30 pages, 61 figures

We present interferometric, full-polarization observations of the four ground-state transitions of OH, toward five confirmed and one candidate OH-emitting planetary nebulae (OHPNe). OHPNe are believed to be very young PNe, and information on their magnetic fields (provided by their polarization) could be key to understand the early evolution of PNe. We detect significant circular and linear polarization in four and two objects, respectively. Possible Zeeman pairs are seen in JaSt 23 and IRAS 17393-2727, resulting in estimates of magnetic field strengths between 0.8 and 24 mG. We also report the new detection of OH emission at 1720 MHz toward Vy 2-2, making it the third known PN with this type of emission. We suggest that younger PNe have spectra dominated by narrow maser features and higher degrees of polarization. Recently ANTARES collaboration presented a time dependent analysis to a selected number of flaring blazars to look for upward going muon events produced from the charge current interaction of the muon neutrinos. We use the same list of flaring blazars to look for possible positional correlation with the IceCube neutrino events. In the context of photohadronic model we propose that the neutrinos are produced within the nuclear region of the blazar where Fermi accelerated high energy protons interact with the background synchrotron/SSC photons. We present near-IR K-band intermediate-dispersion spatially-resolved spectroscopic observations of a limited sample of bipolar planetary nebulae (PNe). The spectra have been used to determine the excitation mechanism of the H2 molecule using standard line ratios diagnostics. The H2 molecule is predominantly shock-excited in bipolar PNe with broad equatorial rings, whereas bipolar PNe with narrow equatorial waists present either UV excitation at their cores (e.g., Hb 12) or shock-excitation at their bipolar lobes (e.g., M1-92). The shock-excitation among bipolar PNe with ring is found to be correlated with emission in the H2 1-0 S(1) line brighter than Br{\gamma}. We have extended this investigation to other PNe with available near-IR spectroscopic observations. We present narrow-band optical and near-IR imaging and optical long-slit spectroscopic observations of Hu1-2, a Galactic planetary nebula (PN) with a pair of [N II]-bright, fast-moving (> 340 km/s) bipolar knots. Intermediate-dispersion spectra are used to derive physical conditions and abundances across the nebula, and high-dispersion spectra to study the spatio-kinematical structure. Generally Hu1-2 has high He/H (~0.14) and N/O ratios (~0.9), typical of Type I PNe. On the other hand, its abundances of O, Ne, S, and Ar are low as compared with the average abundances of Galactic bulge and disc PNe. The position-velocity maps can be generally described as an hour-glass shaped nebula with bipolar expansion, although the morphology and kinematics of the innermost regions cannot be satisfactorily explained with a simple, tilted equatorial torus. The spatio-kinematical study confines the inclination angle of its major axis to be within 10 degrees of the plane of sky. As in the irradiated bow-shocks of IC4634 and NGC7009, there is a clear stratification in the emission peaks of [O III], H_alpha, and [N II] in the northwest (NW) knot of Hu1-2. Fast collimated outflows in PNe exhibit higher excitation than other low-ionization structures. This is particularly the case for the bipolar knots of Hu1-2, with He II emission levels above those of collimated outflows in other Galactic PNe. The excitation of the knots in Hu1-2 is consistent with the combined effects of shocks and UV radiation from the central star. The mechanical energy and luminosity of the knots are similar to those observed in the PNe known to harbor a post-common envelope (post-CE) close binary central star., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 19 pages, 11 figures, 7 tables

The beginning of photoionization marks the transition between the post-Asymptotic Giant Branch (post-AGB) and planetary nebula (PN) phases of stars with masses < 8 M_sun. This critical phase is difficult to observe, as it lasts only a few decades. The combination of jets and magnetic fields, the key agents of PNe shaping, could give rise to synchrotron emission, but this has never been observed before in any PNe, since free-free emission from the ionized gas is expected to dominate its radio spectrum. In this paper we report radio continuum observations taken with the Australia Telescope Compact Array between 1 and 46 GHz of the young PN IRAS 15103-5754. Our observations in 2010-2011 show non-thermal emission compatible with synchrotron emission from electrons accelerated at a shock with spectral index $\alpha \simeq -0.54$. However, in 2012, the spectral index $\alpha \simeq -0.28$ is no longer compatible with synchrotron emission in these types of processes. Several hypothesis are discussed to explain this change. The more plausible ones are related to the presence of the newly photoionized region in this young PN: either energy loss of electrons due to Coulomb collisions with the plasma, or selective suppression of synchrotron radiation due to the Razin effect. The TeV blazar Markarian 421 underwent multi-TeV flaring during April 2004 and simultaneously observed in x-ray and TeV energies. It was observed that the TeV outbursts had no counterparts in the lower energies, which implies that this might be an orphan flare. In the context of hadronic model, we have shown that this multi-TeV flaring can be produced due to the interaction of Fermi-accelerated protons of energy $\lesssim 168$ TeV with the background photons in the low energy tail of the synchrotron self-Compton spectrum of the blazar jet. We fit very well the flaring spectrum with this model. Based on this study, we speculate that Mrk 501 and PG 1553+113 are possible candidates for orphan flaring in the future., Comment: 8 pages, two columns, 3 figures

The IceCube Collaboration has observed 37 neutrino events in the energy range $30\, TeV\leq E_{\nu} \leq 2$ PeV and the sources of these neutrinos are unknown. Here we have shown that positions of 12 high energy blazars and the position of the FR-I galaxy Centaurus A, coincide within the error circles of ten IceCube events, the later being in the error circle of the highest energy event so far observed by IceCube. Two of the above blazars are simultaneously within the error circles of the Telescope Array hotspot and one IceCube event. We found that the blazar H2356-309 is within the error circles of three IceCube events. We propose that photohadronic interaction of the Fermi accelerated high energy protons with the synchrotron/SSC background photons in the nuclear region of these high energy blazars and AGN are probably responsible for some of the observed IceCube events., Comment: 14 pages, 3 figure, references added

The onset of the asymmetry in planetary nebulae (PNe) occurs during the short transition between the end of the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) phase and the beginning of the PN phase. Sources in this transition phase are compact and emit intensely in infrared wavelengths, making high spatial resolution observations in the infrared mandatory to investigate the shaping process of PNe. Interferometric VLTI IR observations have revealed compelling evidence of disks at the cores of PNe, but the limited sensitivity, strong observational constraints, and limited spatial coverage place severe limits on the universal use of this technique. Inspired by the successful detection of proto-planetary disks using spectro-astrometric observations, we apply here for the first time this technique to search for sub-arcsecond structures in PNe. Our exploratory study using CRIRES (CRyogenic high-resolution Infra-Red Echelle Spectrograph) commissioning data of the proto-PN IRAS 17516-2525 and the young PN SwSt 1 has revealed small-sized structures after the spectro-astrometric analysis of the two sources. In IRAS 17516-2525, the spectro-astrometric signal has a size of only 12 mas, as detected in the Brackett-gamma line, whereas the structures found in SwSt 1 have sizes of 230 mas in the [Fe III] line and 130 mas in the Brackett-gamma line. The spectroscopic observations required to perform spectro-astrometry of sources in the transition towards the PN phase are less time consuming and much more sensitive than VLTI IR observations. The results presented here open a new window in the search of the small-sized collimating agents that shape the complex morphologies of extremely axisymmetric PNe., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Once classified as an emission line source, the planetary nebula (PN) nature of the source Kn 26 has been only recently recognized in digital sky surveys. To investigate the spectral properties and spatio-kinematical structure of Kn 26, we have obtained high spatial-resolution optical and near-IR narrow-band images, high-dispersion long-slit echelle spectra, and intermediate-resolution spectroscopic observations. The new data reveal an hourglass morphology typical of bipolar PNe. A detailed analysis of its morphology and kinematics discloses the presence of a second pair of bipolar lobes, making Kn 26 a new member of the subclass of quadrupolar PNe. The time-lap between the ejection of the two pairs of bipolar lobes is much smaller than their dynamical ages, implying a rapid change of the preferential direction of the central engine. The chemical composition of Kn 26 is particularly unusual among PNe, with a low N/O ratio (as of type II PNe) and a high helium abundance (as of type I PNe), although not atypical among symbiotic stars. Such an anomalous chemical composition may have resulted from the curtail of the time in the Asymptotic Giant Branch by the evolution of the progenitor star through a common envelope phase., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

K3-35 is an extremely young bipolar planetary nebula that contains a precessing bipolar jet and a small (radius 80 AU) water maser equatorial ring. We have obtained VISIR- VLT images of K 3-35 in the PAH1 ({\lambda}=8.6 {\mu}m), [S iv] ({\lambda}=10.6 {\mu}m), and SiC ({\lambda}=11.85 {\mu}m) filters to analize the mid-IR morphology and the temperature structure of its dust emission. The images show the innermost nebular regions undetected at optical wavelegths and the precessing bipolar jets. We present Expanded Very Large Array (EVLA) water maser observations at 22 GHz toward the source IRAS 18113-2503. Maser components span over a very high velocity range of ~500 km/s, the second largest found in a Galactic maser, only surpassed by the high-mass star forming region W49N. Maser components are grouped into a blue and a redshifted cluster, separated by 0.12". Further mid-IR and radio data suggest that IRAS 18113-2503 is a post-AGB star, thus a new bona fide member of the rare class of "water fountains". It is the evolved object with the largest total velocity spread in its water masers, and with the highest velocity dispersion within its red- and blue-shifted lobes (~170 km/s). The large total velocity range of emission probably indicates that IRAS 18113-2503 has the fastest jet among the known water fountain stars. On the other hand, the remarkably high velocity dispersion within each lobe may be interpreted in terms of shocks produced by an episode of mass ejection whose velocity increased up to very high values or, alternatively, by projection effects in a jet with a large opening angle and/or precessing motions., Comment: Accepted for publication at The Astrophysical Journal Letters (special EVLA issue)

In this paper we present the results of very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) ob- servations carried out with the VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA) array and the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) toward H2O masers in a young planetary nebula K 3-35. From the VERA observations we measured the annual parallax and proper mo- tion of a bright water maser spot in K 3-35. The resulting distance is D = 3.9+0.7 kpc. -0.5 This is the first time that the parallax of a planetary nebula is obtained by observations of its maser emission. On the other hand, the proper motion of K 3-35 as a whole was esti- mated to be {\mu}{\alpha} = -3.34+/-0.10 mas yr-1, {\mu}{\delta} = -5.93+/-0.07 mas yr-1. From these results we determined the position and velocity of K 3-35 in Galactic cylindrical coordinates: (R,{\theta},z) = (7.11+0.08-0.06 kpc, 27+/-5{\circ}, 140+25-18 pc) and (VR, V{\theta}, Vz) = (33+/-16, 233+/-11, 11+/-2) km s-1, respectively. Additionally, from our VLBA observations we measured the relative proper motions among the water maser spots located in the central region of the nebula, which have been proposed to be tracing a toroidal structure. The distribution and relative proper motions of the masers, compared with previous reported observed epochs, suggest that such structure could be totally destroyed within a few years, due to the action of high velocity winds and the expansion of the ionization front in the nebula., Comment: 17 pages, accepted for publication on PASJ

We present Very Large Array (VLA) observations of H2O and OH masers, as well as radio continuum emission at 1.3 and 18 cm toward three sources previously cataloged as planetary nebulae (PNe) and in which single-dish detections of H2O masers have been reported: IRAS 17443-2949, IRAS 17580-3111, and IRAS 18061-2505. Our goal was to unambiguously confirm their nature as water-maser-emitting PNe, a class of objects of which only two bona-fide members were previously known. We detected and mapped H2O maser emission toward all three sources, while OH maser emission is detected in IRAS 17443-2949 and IRAS 17580-3111 as well as in other two objects within the observed fields: IRAS 17442-2942 (unknown nature) and IRAS 17579-3121 (also cataloged as a possible PN). We found radio continuum emission associated only with IRAS 18061-2505. Our results confirm IRAS 18061-2505 as the third known case of a PN associated with H2O maser emission. The three known water-maser-emitting PNe have clear bipolar morphologies, which suggests that water maser emission in these objects is related to non-spherical mass-loss episodes. We speculate that these bipolar PNe would have ``water-fountain'' Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) and post-AGB stars as their precursors. A note of caution is given for other objects that have been classified as OHPNe (objects with both OH maser and radio continuum emission, that could be extremely young PNe) based on single-dish observations, since interferometric data of both OH masers and continuum are necessary for a proper identification as members of this class., Comment: 33 pages, 10 figures. The nebula Mz 3 has arguably the most complex bipolar morphology, consisting of three nested pairs of bipolar lobes and an equatorial ellipse. Its three pairs of bipolar lobes share the same axis of symmetry, but have very different opening angles and morphologies: the innermost pair of bipolar lobes shows closed lobe morphology, while the other two have open lobes with cylindrical and conical shapes, respectively. We have carried out high-dispersion spectroscopic observations of Mz 3, and detected distinct kinematic properties among the different morphological components. The expansion characteristics of the two outer pairs of lobes suggest that they originated in an explosive event, whereas the innermost pair of lobes resulted from the interaction of a fast wind with the surrounding material. The equatorial ellipse is associated with a fast equatorial outflow which is unique among bipolar nebulae. The dynamical ages of the different structures in Mz 3 suggest episodic bipolar ejections, and the distinct morphologies and kinematics among these different structures reveal fundamental changes in the system between these episodic ejections., Comment: To be published in the October issue of The Astronomical Journal. 16 pages, 10 figures. We report on a water maser survey towards a sample of 27 planetary nebulae (PNe) using the Robledo de Chavela and Medicina single-dish antennas, as well as the Very Large Array (VLA). Two detections have been obtained: the already known water maser emission in K 3-35, and a new cluster of masers in IRAS 17347-3139. This low rate of detections is compatible with the short life-time of water molecules in PNe (~100 yr). The water maser cluster at IRAS 17347-3139 are distributed on a ellipse of size ~ 0.2" x 0.1", spatially associated with compact 1.3 cm continuum emission (simultaneously observed with the VLA). From archive VLA continuum data at 4.9, 8.4, and 14.9 GHz, a spectral index alpha = 0.76 +- 0.03 is derived for this radio source, which is consistent with either a partially optically thick ionized region or with an ionized wind. However, the latter scenario can be ruled out on mass-loss considerations, thus indicating that this source is probably a young PN. The spatial distribution and the radial velocities of the water masers are suggestive of a rotating and expanding maser ring, tracing the innermost regions of a torus formed at the end of the AGB phase. Given that the 1.3 cm continuum emission peak is located near one of the tips of the major axis of the ellipse of masers, we speculate on a possible binary nature of IRAS 17347-3139, where the radio continuum emission could belong to one of the components and the water masers would be associated with a companion., Comment: Accepted by The Astrophysical Journal. 25 pages, 6 figures

We present narrow-band images and long-slit echelle spectra of the planetary nebula (PN) NGC 6778. The data show this PN as bipolar, with a very prominent low-excitation equatorial toroid, high-excitation lobes and two pairs of collimated outflows. Morphologically, the pairs of outflows are different from each other; one is linear and oriented along the bipolar axis, the other presents an S-shape with changing orientations. We present a spatio-kinematical study of the planetary nebula (PN) IC 4634 which has experienced several episodes of point-symmetric ejections oriented at different directions. The nebula displays two S-shaped low-ionization arcs that are probably related to two relatively recent point-symmetric ejections, the outer S-shaped arc representing a beautiful example of a bow-shock resolved in a PN. We present high-dispersion echelle spectroscopic observations and a narrow-band [N II] image of the remarkable jet-like features of He 2-90. They are detected in the echelle spectra in the H-alpha and [N II] lines but not in other nebular lines. The [N II]/H-alpha ratio is uniformly high, ~1. The observed kinematics reveals bipolar collimated outflows in the jet-like features and shows that the southeast (northwest) component expands towards (away from) the observer at a remarkably constant line-of-sight velocity, 26.0+-0.5 km/s. The observed expansion velocity and the opening angle of the jet-like features are used to estimate an inclination angle of ~5 degrees with respect to the sky plane and a space expansion velocity of ~290 km/s. The spectrum of the bright central nebula reveals a profusion of Fe lines and extended wings of the H-alpha line, similar to those seen in symbiotic stars and some young planetary nebulae that are presumed to host a mass-exchanging binary system. We present [N II] and H-alpha images and high resolution long-slit spectra of the planetary nebula IC 4846, which reveal, for the first time, its complex structure and the existence of collimated outflows. The object consists of a moderately elongated shell, two (and probably three) pairs of collimated bipolar outflows at different orientations, and an attached circular shell. One of the collimated pairs is constituted by two curved, extended filaments whose properties indicate a high velocity, bipolar precessing jet. A difference of \~10 km/s is found between the systemic velocity of the precessing jets and the centroid velocity of the nebula, as recently report for Hu 2-1. We propose that this difference is due to orbital motion of the ejection source in a binary central star. The orbital separation and period estimates for the binary star are less than or equal to 30 AU and 100 yr, respectively. These are similar to those previously estimated for Hu 2-1, linking the central stars of both planetary nebulae to interacting binaries. Extraordinary similarities also exist between IC 4846 and the bewildering planetary nebula NGC 6543, suggesting a similar formation history for both objects., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, to be published in MNRAS

We present narrow-band optical images, VLA-A 3.6 cm continuum and H92alpha emission line data and high resolution long-slit [N II] spectra of Hu 2-1. The formation of Hu 2-1 appears dominated by anisotropic mass ejection during the late AGB stage of its progenitor and by variable, ``precessing'' collimated bipolar outflows during the proto-PN and/or early PN phases. The data strongly support the existence of a binary central star at center of Hu 2-1: (1) the brightness distribution of the bipolar lobes and inner shell is point-symmetric, and the bipolar lobes show departures from axial symmetry; (2) the position of the central star is off-center; (3) mass ejection towards the equatorial plane is detected; (4) ``precessing'' collimated outflows are present. Besides all this circumstantial evidences, the analysis of the kinematics shows that the systemic velocity of the bipolar outflows does not coincide with the systemic velocity of the nebula. We propose that this velocity difference is a direct evidence of orbital motion of the ejection source in a binary system. Assuming a reasonable range of masses for the progenitor stars, the orbital velocity of ~10 km/s corresponds to a semi-major axis of 9-27 AU and to a period of 25-80 yr.
