Ultrafast spectroscopy is an emerging technique with great promise in the study of quantum materials, as it makes it possible to track similarities and correlations that are not evident near equilibrium. Thus far, however, the way in which these processes modify the electron self-energy---a fundamental quantity describing many-body interactions in a material---has been little discussed. Here we use time- and angle-resolved photoemission to directly measure the self-energy's ultrafast response to near-infrared photoexcitation in high-temperature cuprate superconductor. Below the superconductor's critical temperature, ultrafast excitations trigger a synchronous decrease of electron self-energy and superconducting gap, culminating in a saturation in the weakening of electron-boson coupling when the superconducting gap is fully quenched. In contrast, electron-boson coupling is unresponsive to ultrafast excitations above the superconductor's critical temperature and in the metallic state of a related material. These findings open a new pathway for studying transient self-energy and correlation effects in solids., Comment: 24 pages, 11 figures

Because reanalysis data sets offer state variables and fluxes at regular space / time intervals, atmospheric reanalyses have become a mainstay of the climate community for diagnostic purposes and for driving offline ocean and land models. Although one weakness of these data sets is the susceptibility of the flux products to uncertainties because of shortcomings in parameterized model physics, another issue, perhaps less appreciated, is the fact that continual but discreet changes in the evolving observational system, particularly from satellite sensors, may also introduce artifacts in the time series of quantities. In this paper we examine the ability of the NASA MERRA (Modern Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications) and other recent reanalyses to determine variability in the climate system over the satellite record (approx. the last 30 years). In particular we highlight the effect on the reanalysis of discontinuities at the junctures of the onset of passive microwave imaging (Special Sensor Microwave Imager) in late 1987 and, more prominently, with improved sounding and imaging with the Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit, AMSU-A, in 1998. We first examine MERRA fluxes from the perspective of how physical modes of variability (e.g. ENSO events, Pacific Decadal Variability) are contained by artificial step-like trends induced by the onset of new moisture data these two satellite observing systems. Secondly, we show how Redundancy Analysis, a statistical regression methodology, is effective in relating these artifact signals in the moisture and temperature analysis increments to their presence in the physical flux terms (e.g. precipitation, radiation). This procedure is shown to be effective greatly reducing the artificial trends in the flux quantities.

Of course, one weakness of these data sets is the susceptibility of the flux products to uncertainties because of shortcomings in parameterized model physics. Another issue, perhaps less appreciated, is the fact that the discreet changes in the evolving observational system, particularly from satellite sensors, may also introduce artifacts in the time series of quantities. In this paper we examine the ability of the NASA MERRA (Modern Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications) and other recent reanalyses to determine variability in the climate system over the satellite record (~ the last 30 years). In particular we highlight the effect on reanalyses of discontinuities at the junctures of the onset of passive microwave imaging (Special Sensor Microwave Imager) in late 1987 as well as improved sounding and imaging with the Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit, AMSU-A, in 1998. We examine these data sets from two perspectives. The first is the ability to capture modes of variability that have coherent spatial structure (e.g. ENSO events and near-decadal coupling to SST changes) and how these modes are contained within trends in near global averages of key quantities. Secondly, we consider diagnostics that measure the consistency in energetic scaling in the hydrologic cycle, particularly the fractional changes in column-integrated water vapor versus precipitation as they are coupled to radiative flux constraints. These results will be discussed in the context of implications for science objectives and priorities of the NASA Energy and Water Cycle Study, NEWS.

Ocean surface turbulent and radiative fluxes are critical links in the climate system since they mediate energy exchange between the two fluid systems (ocean and atmosphere) whose combined heat transport determines the basic character of Earth's climate. Moreover, interannual to decadal climate variability depends crucially on the nature of these exchange processes. For example, addressing the question of the degree to which the global hydrologic cycle is changing depends on our ability to observe and model these fluxes accurately. In this work we investigate the interannual to decadal variation of fluxes over the global tropics, especially the tropical oceans. Recent versions of satellite-derived fresh water flux estimates as well as some reanalyses (e.g. products from Remote Sensing Systems, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, and Global Precipitation Climatology Project) suggest that increases in evaporation and precipitation over the past 20 years exceed those expected on the basis of climate model projected responses to greenhouse gas forcing. At the same time, it is well known that E1 Nino / Southern Oscillation behavior in the Pacific exhibits significant variability at scales longer than interannual. We examine here the degree to which surface fluxes attending these interannual to decadal fluctuations are related to ENSO. We examine consistency between these data sets and explore relationships between SST variations, flux changes and modulation of tropical Walker and Hadley circulations.

When averaged over the tropical oceans (30deg N/S), latent heat flux anomalies derived from passive microwave satellite measurements as well as reanalyses and climate models driven with specified seal-surface temperatures show considerable disagreement in their decadal trends. These estimates range from virtually no trend to values over 8.4 W/sq m decade. Satellite estimates also tend to have a larger interannual signal related to El Nino/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events than do reanalyses or model simulations. An analysis of wind speed and humidity going into bulk aerodynamic calculations used to derive these fluxes reveals several error sources. Among these are apparent remaining intercalibration issues affecting passive microwave satellite 10 m wind speeds and systematic biases in retrieval of near-surface humidity. Likewise, reanalyses suffer from discontinuities in availability of assimilated data that affect near surface meteorological variables. The results strongly suggest that current latent heat flux trends are overestimated.

During the ACE Asia intensive field campaign conducted in the spring of 2001 aerosol properties were measured onboard the R/V Ronald H. Brown to study the effects of the Asian aerosol on atmospheric chemistry and climate in downwind regions. Aerosol properties measured in the marine boundary layer included chemical composition; number size distribution; and light scattering, hemispheric backscattering, and absorption coefficients. In addition, optical depth and vertical profiles of aerosol 180 deg backscatter were measured. Aerosol within the ACE Asia study region was found to be a complex mixture resulting from marine, pollution, volcanic, and dust sources. Presented here as a function of air mass source region are the mass fractions of the dominant aerosol chemical components, the fraction of the scattering measured at the surface due to each component, mass scattering efficiencies of the individual components, aerosol scattering and absorption coefficients, single scattering albedo, Angstrom exponents, optical depth, and vertical profiles of aerosol extinction. All results except aerosol optical depth and the vertical profiles of aerosol extinction are reported at a relative humidity of 55 +/- 5%. An over-determined data set was collected so that measured and calculated aerosol properties could be compared, internal consistency in the data set could be assessed, and sources of uncertainty could be identified. By taking into account non-sphericity of the dust aerosol, calculated and measured aerosol mass and scattering coefficients agreed within overall experimental uncertainties. Differences between measured and calculated aerosol absorption coefficients were not within reasonable uncertainty limits, however, and may indicate the inability of Mie theory and the assumption of internally mixed homogeneous spheres to predict absorption by the ACE Asia aerosol. Mass scattering efficiencies of non-sea salt sulfate aerosol, sea salt, submicron particulate organic matter, and dust found for the ACE Asia aerosol are comparable to values estimated for ACE 1, Aerosols99, and INDOEX. Unique to the ACE Asia aerosol was the large mass fractions of dust, the dominance of dust in controlling the aerosol optical properties, and the interaction of dust with soot aerosol.

Global tropospheric wind observations are considered the number one unaccommodated atmospheric observation for the new series of NPOESS (National Polar Orbiting Environmental Satellite Series) platforms. The operational meteorology communities have long recognized the potential for improved forecasting skill if accurate wind observations were available around the globe. Recent analyses suggest that wind observations such as those that could be made by a space-based Doppler wind lidars; would even result in greater improvements than better temperature soundings. In this paper we present a roadmap that begins with the NASA approved SPAce Readiness Coherent Lidar Experiment (SPARCLE) and ends with an operational DWL (Doppler Wind Lidar) on an NPOESS platform.

A computer code capable of computing the propeller performance for clean, glaze, or rime ice propeller configurations to determine the performance degradation resulting from a given icing encounter has been developed. The inviscid, incompressible flowfield at each specified propeller radial location is first computed using the Theodorsen method. A droplet trajectory computation then calculates the droplet impingement points and airfoil collection efficiency for each radial location. User-selectable empirical correlations are available for determining the aerodynamic penalties due to ice accretion. Propeller performance is finally computed using strip analysis for either the clean or iced propeller. In the iced mode, the thrust and torque coefficient equations are modified by the drag and lift coefficient increments due to ice to obtain the appropriate iced values. Comparison with available experimental propeller icing data shows generally good agreement. The code's capability of properly predicting the thrust coefficient, power coefficient, and propeller efficiency of an iced propeller is shown to be dependent on the choice of empirical correlation employed as well as on the proper specification of the radial icing extent and propeller blade angle.

Numerical modeling has been performed of the fluid dynamics in a prototypical physical vapor transport crystal growing situation. Cases with and without gravity have been computed. Dependence of the flows upon the dimensionless parameters aspect ratio and Peclet, Rayleigh, and Schmidt numbers is demonstrated to a greater extent than in previous works. Most notably, it is shown that the effects of thermally-induced buoyant convection upon the mass flux on the growth interface crucially depend upon the temperature boundary conditions on the sidewall (e.g., whether adiabatic or of a fixed profile, and in the latter case the results depend upon the shape of the profile assumed).

Calculations have been performed of the (linear) stability of a baroclinic flow to three-dimensional perturbations. Both the simple Eady basic state and the rotating Hadley cell of Antar and Fowlis are considered. The independent influences of the Richardson (Ri), thermal Rossby (baroclinicity), Ekman, and Prandtl numbers are examined, as well as the influences of the angle of orientation of the horizontal wave vector and the wavelength. It is shown that if the wavelength is allowed to vary freely, disturbances of the Eady type are preferred (i.e., have greatest growth rate) unless Ri and Ekman numbers are small enough and the thermal Rossby number is large enough. In the latter case, disturbances whose angles of orientation are almost symmetric and whose wavelengths are mesoscale are preferred. If, on the other hand, the wavelength is fixed at a mesoscale size, only the symmetric and almost symmetric modes have growth. By allowing the wave vector orientation to deviate from purely symmetric, it is noted that the region of instability (i.e., critical Ri) is increased, the extent of which is greater for longer wavelength. For Prandtl number = 1, permitting the angle to be nonsymmetric demonstrates the existence of two maxima in growth rate at opposite angles of orientation and with very different energetics. For Prandtl number far enough from one and for large enough dissipation, only one of these two modes has positive growth rates. Growing oscillatory modes were found for some cases.

Topics in large scale atmospheric dynamics are discussed. Aspects of atmospheric blocking, the influence of transient baroclinic eddies on planetary-scale waves, cyclogenesis, the effects of orography on planetary scale flow, small scale frontal structure, and simulations of gravity waves in frontal zones are discussed.

Experiments have been performed in a cylindrical annulus with horizontal temperature gradients imposed upon the horizontal boundaries and in which the vertical depth was smaller than the width of the annulus. Qualitative observations were made by the use of small, suspended, reflective flakes in the liquid (water). Four basic regimes of flow were observed: (1) axisymmetric flow, (2) deep cellular convection, (3) boundary layer convective rolls, and (4) baroclinic waves. In some cases there was a mix of baroclinic and convective instabilities present. As a 'mean' interior Richardson number was decreased from a value greater than unity to one less than zero, axisymmetric baroclinic instability of the Solberg type was never observed. Rather, the transition was from non-axisymmetric baroclinic waves, to a mix of baroclinic and convective instability, to irregular cellular convection.

The major criterion for the Atmospheric General Circulation Experiment (AGCE) design is that it be possible to realize strong baroclinic instability in the spherical configuration chosen. A configuration was selected in which a hemispherical shell of fluid is subjected to latitudinal temperature gradients on its spherical boundaries and the latitudinal boundaries are insulators. Work in the laboratory with a cylindrical version of this configuration revealed more instabilities than baroclinic instability. Since researchers fully expect these additional instabilities to appear in the spherical configuration also, they decided to continue the laboratory cylindrical annulus studies. Four flow regimes were identified: an axisymmetric Hadley circulation, boundary layer convection, baroclinic waves and deep thermal convection. Regime diagrams were prepared.

It is pointed out that ice accretion on aircraft produces an adverse effect on aircraft performance in terms of decreased lift and increased drag of the lifting surface. Ice on the surface of a propeller may also cause a decrease in thrust, increase in the required power, and a resultant decrease in propeller efficiency. During the past years, a number of attempts have been made to analyze the effects of ice accretion on both fixed wings and propellers. The present investigation is concerned with the development of a single user-oriented computer code which makes it possible to calculate propeller performance degradation due to ice accretion for specified flight conditions, atmospheric conditions, and propeller geometry. This development is based on a combination of several of the codes and correlations considered in earlier studies.

Dry symmetric baroclinic instability is studied using numerical analysis at the critical Richardson number (Ri) for varying thermal Rossby (Ro), Prandtl (Pr), and Ekman numbers. For small enough Ro, dissipation results in a lowering of the critical Ri as Ro decreases, and the critical wavelength is not proportional to Ro. For Pr = 1, the energy conversion is via both inertial and convective mechanisms.

The major criterion for the design of the Atmospheric General Circulation Experiment is that it be possible to realize strong baroclinic instability in the apparatus. A spherical annulus configuration which allows only steady basic state flows was chosen for the first set of stability analyses. Baroclinic instability was found for this configuration and few results suggest a regime diagram very different from the cylindrical annulus regime diagram.

Baroclinic instability at small Richardson number consists of competition between symmetric (Solberg) modes, zonal (Eady) modes, and possibly other modes whose orientation is neither symmetric nor zonal. In FY-84, a study of the fully nonlinear development and energetics of the symmetric modes was completed. The nonlinear effects were quite strong and, in some senses, unexpected. Secondly, a study of the dependency of the energetics of the symmetric modes upon the physical parameters was completed.

As part of the support program for the Atmospheric General Circulation Experiment, laboratory studies of baroclinic and other convective instabilities were performed for a thin layer of fluid between thermally conducting horizontal discs. There were three types of modes identified. The first has a spiral-arm appearance, and exists for large enough horizontal thermal forcing, weak enough static stability, and large enough rotation. The source of this wave is shown to be the Eady mode of instability. The second mode is due to convective instability in the thermal boundary layers which exist due to the thermally conducting horizontal boundaries. Finally, for strong enough negative static stability, thermal convection of the Benard type appears. The most significant result is that the symmetric (Solberg) mode was not found, even though the infinite-plane theory predicts this mode under certain experimental conditions.

Calculations were performed with computer models using three types of finite difference methods of thermosolutal convection: horizontal heating of a container filled with a stably stratified solution, finger convection in a container, and finger convection in a horizontally infinite channel. The importance of including thermosolutal convection in models of crystal growth is emphasized, and the difficulties in doing so are demonstrated. It is pointed out that these difficulties, due primarily to the fine structure of the convection, may be partly overcome by the use of fine grids and implicit time stepping methods.

An experimental program using a commercially available remotely controlled model helicopter in the Texas A&M University (TAMU) subsonic wind tunnel has been conducted to investigate the performance degradation resulting from the simulated formation of ice on the leading edge of the main rotor blades in both hover and forward flight. The rotor blades utilized a NACA 0012 airfoil with a 2.5-in. constant chord. A generic ice shape derived from a predetermined natural ice condition was applied to the 53.375-in.-diameter main rotor, and thrust and torque coefficients were measured for the main rotor as functions of velocity, main rotor rpm, fuselage angle of incidence, collective pitch angle, and spanwise extent of icing. The model helicopter test exhibited significant performance degradation of the main rotor when generic ice was added. An increase of approximately 150 percent in torque coefficient to maintain a constant thrust coefficient was noted when generic ice had been applied to the 85 percent rotor radial location. Also, considerable additional degradation occurred when generic ice was applied to the 100 percent rotor radial location, as compared with the 85 percent simulated ice performance values, indicating the sensitivity of the rotor tip region.

Rotating baroclinic flow for Richardson number lower than about 1 is studied by means of a finite difference Navier-Stokes model assuming no variations except in the vertical plane that completely contains the density gradient vector. The horizontally infinite channel to which attention is given further assumes periodic boundary conditions at the vertical computational boundaries and no-slip conducting horizontal boundaries. Two configurations are considered. Symmetric baroclinic waves developed in the flows in a manner consistent with linear theory, and it is noted that the structures and energetics of the fully developed waves were dependent on the Prandtl number Pr. For Pr greater than 1, the conversion from potential energy to wave kinetic energy was direct, via temperature and vertical motion correlation, while for Pr of less than 1, conversion proceeded from potential energy to average kinetic energy by means of an induced meridional flow, and then to wave kinetic energy.

Numerical methods are used to design a spherical baroclinic flow model experiment of the large scale atmosphere flow for Spacelab. The dielectric simulation of radial gravity is only dominant in a low gravity environment. Computer codes are developed to study the processes at work in crystal growing systems which are also candidates for space flight. Crystalline materials rarely achieve their potential properties because of imperfections and component concentration variations. Thermosolutal convection in the liquid melt can be the cause of these imperfections. Such convection is suppressed in a low gravity environment. Two and three dimensional finite difference codes are being used for this work. Nonuniform meshes and implicit iterative methods are used. The iterative method for steady solutions is based on time stepping but has the options of different time steps for velocity and temperature and of a time step varying smoothly with position according to specified powers of the mesh spacings. This allows for more rapid convergence. The code being developed for the crystal growth studies allows for growth of the crystal as the solid-liquid interface. The moving interface is followed using finite differences; shape variations are permitted. For convenience in applying finite differences in the solid and liquid, a time dependent coordinate transformation is used to make this interface a coordinate surface.

A model helicopter has been used to collect test data and provide an experimental means of studying helicopter performance in a subsonic wind tunnel. A simulated generic ice shape was attached to the rotor blades and performance data were obtained for both hover and forward flights. Significant degradation in helicopter performance with respect to torque and thrust coefficient was observed; the rotor tip region was especially sensitive. Two-dimensional wind tunnel tests were conducted over a Reynolds number range 0.7-3 x 10 to the 6th in order to investigate the effect of Reynolds number on the aerodynamic performance of the airfoil in both clean and iced configurations. Only minimal dependence of the aerodynamic data on Reynolds number was observed.

A primitive equation linear model is shown to be capable of quantitatively predicting the neutral curve for a baroclinic annulus. Flows unstable to small nonaxisymmetric perturbations are assumed to lie on the nonaxisymmetric side of a transition curve, while the stable flows are on the axisymmetric side. The stability in the presence of perturbations is tested with linearized hydrostatic primitive equations. Attention is given to the fastest growing eigenmodes, demonstrating that the linear and nonlinear wave have similar structures at a particular point in the nonaxisymmetric regime. All the waves are similar to the Eddy wave except at the extreme to the transition curve, where the waves maintain little structure with height. The eddy kinetic energy is baroclinic with a potential energy suppresed by the large static stability of the basic state. Eddy dissipation is noted to be significant near all boundaries.

A spherical analogue of the rotating annulus experiments modeling atmospheric motion, in which a liquid is contained between two rigid, corotating and concentric hemispheres upon both of which thermal gradients are imposed, is presently studied by means of numerical models. Temperatures are lower on the inner than on the outer sphere, and decrease towards the pole. Using Navier-Stokes equations which assume symmetry about the polar axis, finite difference numerical models yield steady-state solutions to the equations. Hydrostatic and nonhydrostatic solutions are compared for cylindrical and spherical cases, and it is found in the case of the spherical shell that the differences between hydrostatic and nonhydrostatic solutions are small and largely confined to the regions near the pole and equator. It is suggested that nonhydrostatic effects on the axisymmetric state will not affect the flow's baroclinic stability.

Baroclinic waves in the atmospherics general circulation experiment (AGCE) apparatus by the use of numerical hydrostatic primitive equation models were determined. The calculation is accomplished by using an axisymmetric primitive equation model to compute, for a given set of experimental parameters, a steady state axisymmetric flow and then testing this axisymmetric flow for stability using a linear primitive equation model. Some axisymmetric flows are presented together with preliminary stability calculations.
