The first generation of ELT instruments includes an optical-infrared high-resolution spectrograph, indicated as ELT-HIRES and recently christened ANDES (ArmazoNes high Dispersion Echelle Spectrograph). ANDES consists of three fibre-fed spectrographs ([U]BV, RIZ, YJH) providing a spectral resolution of $\sim$100,000 with a minimum simultaneous wavelength coverage of 0.4-1.8 $\mu$m with the goal of extending it to 0.35-2.4 $\mu$m with the addition of a U arm to the BV spectrograph and a separate K band spectrograph. It operates both in seeing- and diffraction-limited conditions and the fibre feeding allows several, interchangeable observing modes including a single conjugated adaptive optics module and a small diffraction-limited integral field unit in the NIR. Modularity and fibre-feeding allow ANDES to be placed partly on the ELT Nasmyth platform and partly in the Coud\'e room. ANDES has a wide range of groundbreaking science cases spanning nearly all areas of research in astrophysics and even fundamental physics. Among the top science cases, there are the detection of biosignatures from exoplanet atmospheres, finding the fingerprints of the first generation of stars, tests on the stability of Nature's fundamental couplings, and the direct detection of the cosmic acceleration. We report on trapped pulse generation in birefringent microstructured optical fiber. Linearly polarized fs pulses are injected into the microstructured fiber in anomalous dispersion regime. We observed experimentally that soliton pulse polarized along the fast fiber axis partially transfers its energy to the orthogonal polarization. The generated pulse is amplified through the orthogonal Raman gain. The two polarization components are located at group-velocity matched wavelengths. The experimental works are supported with numerical simulations. Dual-comb (DC) ranging is an established method for high-precision and high-accuracy distance measurements. It is, however, restricted by an inherent length ambiguity and the requirement for complex control loops for comb stabilization. Here, we present a simple approach for expanding the ambiguity-free measurement length of dual-comb ranging by exploiting the intrinsic intensity modulation of a single-cavity dualcolor DC for simultaneous time-of-flight a nd D C distance measurements. This measurement approach enables the measurement of distances up to several hundred km with the precision and accuracy of a dualcomb interferometric setup while providing a high data acquisition rate (~2 kHz) and requiring only the repetition rate of one of the combs to be stabilized.

Deterministic solid-state quantum light sources are considered key building blocks for future communication networks. While several proof-of-principle experiments of quantum communication using such sources have been realized, most of them required large setups often involving liquid helium infrastructure or bulky closed-cycle cryotechnology. In this work, we report on the first quantum key distribution (QKD) testbed using a compact benchtop quantum dot single-photon source operating at telecom wavelengths. The plug\&play device emits single-photon pulses at O-band wavelengths ($1321\,$nm) and is based on a directly fiber-pigtailed deterministically-fabricated quantum dot device integrated into a compact Stirling cryocooler. The Stirling is housed in a 19-inch rack module including all accessories required for stand-alone operation. Implemented in a simple QKD testbed emulating the BB84 protocol with polarization coding, we achieve an antibunching of $g^{(2)}(0) = 0.10\pm0.01$ and a raw key rate of up to $(4.72\pm0.13)\,$kHz using an external pump laser. In this setting, we further evaluate the performance of our source in terms of the quantum bit error ratios, secure key rates, and tolerable losses expected in full implementations of QKD also accounting for finite key size effects. Furthermore, we investigate optimal settings for a two-dimensional temporal acceptance window applied on receiver side, resulting in predicted tolerable losses up to $23.19\,$dB. Not least, we compare our results with previous proof-of-concept QKD experiments using quantum dot single-photon sources. We report the design of a microstructured silica-based fiber for widely tunable soliton self-frequency shift, suitable for pumping with two most common fiber laser wavelengths: 1.04 {\mu}m and 1.55 {\mu}m. Depending on the pump source, the output spectrum can be continuously tuned up to 1.67 {\mu}m (pump at 1.04 {\mu}m) or 1.95 {\mu}m (pump at 1.55 {\mu}m) in the same 1.5 m-long fiber sample, with pump-to-soliton conversion efficiency higher than 20%. The fiber is highly birefringent, which results in an excellent polarization extinction ratio of the soliton, reaching 26 dB. The shifted solitons have a high degree of coherence confirmed by pulse-to-pulse interference measurement. The available soliton tuning range covers the wavelengths inaccessible for fiber lasers, e.g., 1.3 {\mu}m and 1.7 {\mu}m, highly important for multi-photon microscopy and imaging. Our work shows that it is possible to design and fabricate one universal optical fiber that supports soliton shift when pumped at two different wavelengths separated by over 500 nm.

We report the measurement of sub-Doppler double-resonance transitions in methane using a 3.3 $\mu$m continuous wave optical parametric oscillator to pump transitions in the fundamental $\nu_3$ band and a 1.67 $\mu$m frequency comb to probe ladder-type transitions in the 3$\nu_3$ band over 200 cm$^{-1}$ of bandwidth. We detected 36 ladder-type resonances for 9 pumped transitions with average center frequency accuracy of 1.7 MHz, limited by the pump frequency stability. The lines are assigned using the TheoReTS line list, and the intensity ratios for different relative pump/probe polarizations. This method provides accurate assignment of highly excited energy levels that cannot be done using high temperature spectra.

A user-friendly fibre-coupled single-photon source operating at telecom wavelengths is a key component of photonic quantum networks providing long-haul ultra-secure data exchange. To take full advantage of quantum-mechanical data protection and to maximize the transmission rate and distance, a true quantum source providing single-photons on demand is highly desirable. We tackle this great challenge by developing a ready to use semiconductor quantum dot (QD)-based device that launches single photons at a wavelength of 1.3 um directly into a single-mode optical fibre. In our approach the QD is deterministically integrated into a nanophotonic structure to ensure efficient on-chip coupling into a fibre. The whole arrangement is integrated into a 19" compatible housing to enable stand-alone operation by cooling via a compact Stirling cryocooler. The realized source delivers single photons with multiphoton events probability as low as 0.15 and single-photon emission rate up to 73 kHz into a standard telecom single-mode fibre., Comment: 20 pages, 3 figures

We demonstrate a broadband mid-infrared (MIR) frequency comb source based on difference frequency generation (DFG) in periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) crystal. Mid-infrared radiation is obtained via mixing of the output of a 125 MHz repetition rate Yb-doped fiber laser with Raman-shifted solitons generated from the same source in a highly nonlinear fiber. The resulting idler is tunable in the range of 2.7 - 4.2 {\mu}m with average output power reaching 237 mW, and pulses as short as 115 fs. The coherence of the MIR comb is confirmed by spectral interferometry and heterodyne beat measurements. Applicability of the developed DFG source for laser spectroscopy is demonstrated by measuring absorption spectrum of acetylene at 3.0 - 3.1 {\mu}m.
