When spin-orbit-entangled $d$-electrons reside on a honeycomb lattice, rich quantum states are anticipated to emerge, as exemplified by the $d^5$ Kitaev materials. Distinct yet equally intriguing physics may be realized with a $d$-electron count other than $d^5$. We found that the layered ruthenate Ag$_3$LiRu$_2$O$_6$ with $d^4$ Ru$^{4+}$ ions at ambient pressure forms a honeycomb lattice of spin-orbit-entangled singlets, which is a playground for frustrated excitonic magnetism. Under pressure, the singlet state does not develop the expected excitonic magnetism but experiences two successive transitions to other nonmagnetic phases, first to an intermediate phase with moderate distortion of honeycomb lattice, and eventually to a high-pressure phase with very short Ru-Ru dimer bonds. While the strong dimerization in the high-pressure phase originates from a molecular orbital formation as in the sister compound Li$_2$RuO$_3$, the intermediate phase represents a spin-orbit-coupled $J$-dimer state which is stabilized by the admixture of upper-lying $J_{\rm eff} = 1$-derived states. We argue that the $J$-dimer state is induced by a pseudo-Jahn-Teller effect associated with the low-lying spin-orbital excited states and is unique to spin-orbit-entangled $d^4$ systems. The antiferromagnetic mixed valence ternary oxide $\alpha$-CoV$_{3}$O$_{8}$ displays disorder on the Co$^{2+}$ site that is inherent to the $Ibam$ space group. The zero field structural and dynamic properties of $\alpha$-CoV$_{3}$O$_{8}$~have been investigated using a combination of neutron and x-ray diffraction, DC susceptibility, and neutron spectroscopy. The low temperature magnetic and structural properties are consistent with a random macroscopic distribution of Co$^{2+}$ over the 16$k$ metal sites. However, by applying the sum rules of neutron scattering we observe the collective magnetic excitations are parameterized with an ordered Co$^{2+}$ arrangement and critical scattering consistent with a three dimensional Ising universality class. The low energy spectrum is well-described by Co$^{2+}$ cations coupled $via$ a three dimensional network composed of competing ferromagnetic and stronger antiferromagnetic superexchange within the $ab$ plane and along $c$, respectively. While the extrapolated Weiss temperature is near zero, the 3D dimensionality results in long range antiferromagnetic order at $T\rm{_{N}}\sim$ 19 K. A crystal field analysis finds two bands of excitations separated in energy at $\hbar \omega$ $\sim$ 5 meV and 25 meV, consistent with a $j\rm{_{eff}}=\frac{1}{2}$ ground state with little mixing between spin-orbit split Kramers doublets. A comparison of our results to the random 3D Ising magnets and other compounds where spin-orbit coupling is present indicate that the presence of an orbital degree of freedom, in combination with strong crystal field effects and well-separated $j\rm{_{eff}}$ manifolds may play a key role in making the dynamics largely insensitive to disorder., Comment: 25 pages, 8 figures, 1 figure in Appendix

In a Kuroshio tracking experiment initiated in February 1977, two satellite-reporting buoys, drogued to 100-m depth, were released southeast of Kuyshu Island, Japan. These drifters crossed the Shatskiy Rise in the Kuroshio extension during May and October and then traversed the Emperor Seamount Chain. Although they reached the chain 117 days apart, their movements near the seamounts display remarkably similar patterns, demonstrating upstream meanders in the surface flow; cyclonic eddy activity immediately west of the chain; passage through the same gap associated with the Jingu and Nintoku seamounts; and a wavelike pattern present over the Hess Rise east of the chain. One drifter exhibited cyclonic eddy motion east of the chain in the lee of the Kinmei Seamount.
