Synchrotron radiation based Fourier transform IR (SR-FTIR) spectromicroscopy allows the study of individual living cells with a high signal to noise ratio. Here we report the use of the SR-FTIR technique to investigate changes in IR spectral features from individual human lung fibroblast (IMR-90) cells in vitro at different points in their cell cycle. Clear changes are observed in the spectral regions corresponding to proteins, DNA, and RNA as a cell changes from the G(1)-phase to the S-phase and finally into mitosis. These spectral changes include markers for the changing secondary structure of proteins in the cell, as well as variations in DNA/RNA content and packing as the cell cycle progresses. We also observe spectral features that indicate that occasional cells are undergoing various steps in the process of cell death. The dying or dead cell has a shift in the protein amide I and II bands corresponding to changing protein morphologies, and a significant increase in the intensity of an ester carbonyl C===O peak at 1743 cm(-1) is observed. Far-ultraviolet spectra of Jupiter with a significant improvement in sensitivity and spectral resolution have been obtained from a sounding rocket by using a 10-channel spectrometer behind a pointing telescope. The major results obtained from these spectra are: (1) measurement of the Jovian H I 1216-A brightness (a comparison with other measurements indicates that the Ly-alpha emission is likely to be variable); (2) measurement of the wavelength-dependent albedo for Rayleigh-scattered solar radiation from about 1550 to 1875 A with approximately 25-A resolution, making it possible to set revised upper limits on the abundances of some of the minor constituents in the upper Jovian atmosphere; and (3) a demonstration that weak emissions between approximately 1250 and 1500 A and near 1600 A are probably the Lyman bands of H2 excited by low-energy electrons.

The far-ultraviolet (1180-1950 A) emission spectrum of the K2 IIIp star, Arcturus, has been obtained with a rocket-borne multichannel spectrometer. The use of multiple detectors gave an increase in effective observing time and permitted an improvement in spectral resolution over two previous rocket measurements. H I at 1216-A and O I at 1304 A are the only identified emissions, and the observed H I 1216-A flux is low compared with previous observations. A third unidentified feature was observed at 1511 A. The absence of many lines found in emission from the sun is striking. The absence of certain features implies that the coronal temperature must be either below 50,000 K or above 350,000 K.

Results of two types of measurements made at a site in the center of the eclipse track during the total eclipse of Mar. 7, 1970. The O I forbidden 5577-A and 6300-A lines were measured looking vertically through the eclipse shadow. The intensities were approximately 1 kR, essentially the values obtained in recent rocket measurements of normal day airglow at altitudes above 100 km. This is consistent with the hypothesis that these lines originate primarily at altitudes well above the shadow from mechanisms which are not appreciably perturbed by the approaching shadow. Measurements were also made of the time variation of intensity of incident light during the shadow-band period before second contact. There are saw-tooth fluctuations with steep leading edges, as well as many high-frequency components of smaller amplitude. This time variation does not appear to be obviously related in a simple way to current theories of their production mechanisms, or to the visual appearance of shadow bands.
