We consider an effective theory of massive scalar fields on a fixed AdS$_{d+1}$ background with a cubic extremal interaction among them. A bulk coupling is called extremal whenever the corresponding conformal dimension of any of the dual CFT$_d$ operators matches the sum of all the others. For cubic bulk couplings, this is $\Delta_i+\Delta_j=\Delta_k$. These bulk interactions are often disregarded in the literature since they do not appear in traditional models of AdS/CFT. Turning them on yields a divergent vertex in the dual CFT, and here we show that these divergences can be regulated. Once renormalized, we demonstrate that this coupling introduces non-trivial mixing between single- and double-trace operators, and we compute the anomalous dimensions of the corrected operators to leading order in perturbation theory., Comment: 20 pages + appendices, improved discussion in Sec. 4.2 and refs added in v2

An energy-based theory of autoresonance in driven dissipative chains of coupled generic oscillators is discussed on the basis of a variational principle concerning the energy functional. The theory is applied to chains of delayed Duffing-Ueda oscillators and the equations that together govern the autoresonance forces and solutions are derived and solved analytically for generic values of parameters and initial conditions, including the case of quenched time-delay disorder. Remarkably, the presence of retarded potentials with time-delayed feedback drastically modify the autoresonance scenario preventing the growth of the energy oscillation over specific regions of the parameter space. Additionally, effective harmonic forces with a slowly varying frequency are derived from the exact autoresonant excitations and the effectiveness of the theory is demonstrated at suppressing the chaos induced by homogeneous periodic excitations in such oscillator chains. Characterizing the emergence of chaotic dynamics of complex networks is an essential task in nonlinear science with potential important applications in many fields such as neural control engineering, microgrid technologies, and ecological networks. Here, we solve a critical outstanding problem in this multidisciplinary research field: The emergence and persistence of spatio-temporal chaos in complex networks of damped-driven nonlinear oscillators in the significant weak-coupling regime, while they exhibit regular behavior when uncoupled. By developing a comprehensive theory with the aid of standard analytical methods, a hierarchy of lower-dimensional effective models, and extensive numerical simulations, we uncover and characterize the basic physical mechanisms concerning both heterogeneity-induced and impulse-induced emergence, enhancement, and suppression of chaos in starlike and scale-free networks of periodically driven, dissipative nonlinear oscillators., Comment: 11 pages (including supplemental material) with included figures

Entanglement temperatures (ET) are a generalization of Unruh temperatures valid for states reduced to any region of space. They encode in a thermal fashion the high energy behavior of the state around a point. These temperatures are determined by an eikonal equation in Euclidean space. We show that the real-time continuation of these equations implies ballistic propagation. For theories with a free UV fixed point, the ET determines the state at a large modular temperature. In particular, we show that the $n \to 0$ limit of R\'enyi entropies $S_n$, can be computed from the ET. This establishes a formula for these R\'enyi entropies for any region in terms of solutions of the eikonal equations. In the $n\to 0$ limit, the relevant high-temperature state propagation is determined by a free relativistic Boltzmann equation, with an infinite tower of conserved currents. For the special case of states and regions with a conformal Killing symmetry, these equations coincide with the ones of a perfect fluid., Comment: 33 pages, 3 figures

The strength of electrostatic interactions (EI) between electrons and holes within semiconductor nanocrystals profoundly impact the performance of their optoelectronic systems, and different optoelectronic devices demand distinct EI strength of the active medium. However, achieving a broad range, fine-tuning of the EI strength for specific optoelectronic applications is a daunting challenge, especially in quasi 2-dimensional core-shell semiconductor nanoplatelets (NPLs), as the epitaxial growth of the inorganic shell along the direction of the thickness that solely contributes to the quantum confined effect significantly undermines the strength of the EI. Herein we propose and demonstrate a novel doubly-gradient (DG) core-shell architecture of semiconductor NPLs for on-demand tailoring of the EI strength by controlling the localized exciton concentration via in-plane architectural modulation, demonstrated by a wide tuning of radiative recombination rate and exciton binding energy. Moreover, these exciton-concentration-engineered DG NPLs also exhibit a near-unity quantum yield, remarkable thermal and photo stability, as well as considerably suppressed self-absorption. As proof-of-concept demonstrations, highly efficient color converters and high-performance light-emitting diodes (external quantum efficiency: 16.9%, maximum luminance: 43,000 cd/m2) have been achieved based on the DG NPLs. This work thus opens up new avenues for developing high-performance colloidal optoelectronic device applications.

We study the conventional holographic recipes and its real-time extensions in the context of the correspondence between SYK quantum mechanics and JT gravity. We first observe that only closed contours are allowed to have a 2d space-time holographic dual. Thus, in any real-time formulation of the duality, the boundaries of a classical connected geometry are a set of closed curves, parameterized by a complex \emph{closed} time contour as in the Schwinger-Keldysh framework. Thereby, a consistent extension of the standard holographic formulas is proposed, in order to describe the correspondence between gravity and boundary quantum models that include averaging on the coupling constants. We investigate our prescription in different AdS$_{1+1}$ solutions with Schwinger-Keldysh boundary condition, dual to a boundary quantum theory at finite temperature defined on a complex time contour, and consider also classical, asymptotically AdS solutions (wormholes) with two disconnected boundaries. In doing this, we revisit the so-called factorization problem, and its resolution in conventional holography by virtue of some (non-local) coupling between disconnected boundaries, and we show how in specific contexts, the averaging proposal by-passes the paradox as well, since it induces a similar effective coupling., Comment: 29 pages + appendices, 5 figures

We study generalized free fields (GFF) from the point of view of information measures. We first review conformal GFF, their holographic representation, and the ambiguities in the assignation of algebras to regions that arise in these theories. Then we study the mutual information (MI) in several geometric configurations. The MI displays unusual features at the short distance limit: a leading volume term rather than an area term, and a logarithmic term in any dimensions rather than only for even dimensions as in ordinary CFT's. We find the dependence of some subleading terms on the conformal dimension $\Delta$ of the GFF. We study the long distance limit of the MI for regions with boundary in the null cone. The pinching limit of these surfaces show the GFF behaves as an interacting model from the MI point of view. The pinching exponents depend on the choice of algebra. The entanglement wedge algebra choice allows these models to ``fake'' causality, giving results consistent with its role in the description of large $N$ models., Comment: 28 pages, 8 figures

We consider Lorentz-Karamata spaces, small and grand Lorentz-Karamata spaces, and the so-called $\mathcal{L}$, $\mathcal{R}$, $\mathcal{LL}$, $\mathcal{RL}$, $\mathcal{RL}$, and $\mathcal{RR}$ spaces. The quasi-norms for a function $f$ in each of these spaces can be defined via the non-increasing rearrangement $f^*$ or via the maximal function $f^{**}$. We investigate when these quasi-norms are equivalent. Most of the proofs are based on Hardy-type inequalities. As application we demonstrate how our general results can be used to establish interpolation formulae for the grand and small Lorentz-Karamata spaces.

We consider K-interpolation methods involving slowly varying functions. Let $\overline{A}_{\theta,*}^{\mathcal{L}}$ and $\overline{A}_{\theta,*}^{\mathcal{R}}$ $(0\leq\theta\leq1)$ be the so called ${\mathcal{L}}$ or ${\mathcal{R}}$ limiting interpolation spaces which arise naturally in reiteration formulae for the limiting cases. We characterize the interpolation spaces $\Big(\overline{A}_{\theta_0,*}^{\mathcal{L}}, *\Big)_{\eta,r,a}$, $\Big(\overline{A}_{\theta_0,*}^{\mathcal{R}}, *\Big)_{\eta,r,a}$, $\Big(*, \overline{A}_{\theta_1,*}^{\mathcal{L}}\Big)_{\eta,r,a}$, and $\Big(*, \overline{A}_{\theta_1,*}^{\mathcal{R}}\Big)_{\eta,r,a}$ $(0\leq\eta\leq1)$ for the limiting cases $\theta_0=0$ and $\theta_1=1$. This supplements the earlier papers of the authors, which only considered the case $0<\theta_0<\theta_1<1$. The proofs of most reiteration formulae are based on Holmstedt-type formulae. Applications to grand and small Lorentz spaces as well as to Lorentz-Karamata spaces are given.

We study the Hayward term describing corners in the boundary of the geometry in the context of the Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity. These corners naturally arise in the computation of Hartle-Hawking wave functionals and reduced density matrices, and give origin to AdS spacetimes with conical defects. This set up constitutes a lab to manifestly realize many aspects of the construction recently proposed in \cite{Botta2020}. In particular, it can be shown that the Hayward term is required to reproduce the flat spectrum of R\'enyi entropies in the Fursaev's derivation, and furthermore, the action with an extra Nambu-Goto term associated to the Dong's cosmic brane prescription appears naturally. On the other hand, the conical defect coming from Hayward term contribution are subtly different from the defects set as pointlike \emph{sources} studied previously in the literature. We study and analyze these quantitative differences in the path integral and compare the results. Also study previous proposals on the superselection sectors, and by computing the density operator we obtain the Shannon entropy and some novel results on the symmetry group representations and edge modes. It also makes contact with the so-called \emph{defect operator} found in \cite{Jafferis2019}. Lastly, we obtain the area operator as part of the gravitational modular Hamiltonian, in agreement with the Jafferis-Lewkowycz-Maldacena-Suh proposal., Comment: 31 pages, 2 figures

We propose a real time holographic framework to study thermalization processes of a family of QFT excited states. The construction builds on Skenderis-van Rees's holographic duals to QFT Schwinger-Keldysh complex-time ordered paths. Thermalization is explored choosing a set of observables $F_n$ which essentially isolate the excited state contribution. Focusing on theories defined on compact manifolds and with excited states defined in terms of Euclidean path integrals, we identify boundary conditions that allow to avoid any number of modes in the initial field state. The entropic order parameters measure in a universal geometric way the statistics of non-local operators responsible for generalized symmetries. In this article, we compute entropic order parameters in weakly coupled gauge theories. To perform this computation, the natural route of evaluating expectation values of physical (smeared) non-local operators is prevented by known difficulties in constructing suitable smeared Wilson loops. We circumvent this problem by studying the smeared non-local class operators in the enlarged non-gauge invariant Hilbert space. This provides a generic approach for smeared operators in gauge theories and explicit formulas at weak coupling. In this approach, the Wilson and 't Hooft loops are labeled by the full weight and co-weight lattices respectively. We study generic Lie groups and discuss couplings with matter fields. Smeared magnetic operators, as opposed to the usual infinitely thin ones, have expectation values that approach one at weak coupling. The corresponding entropic order parameter saturates to its maximum topological value, except for an exponentially small correction, which we compute. On the other hand, smeared 't Hooft loops and their entropic disorder parameter are exponentially small. We verify that both behaviors match the certainty relation for the relative entropies. In particular, we find upper and lower bounds (that differ by a factor of 2) for the exact coefficient of the linear perimeter law for thin loops at weak coupling. This coefficient is unphysical/non-universal for line operators. Within the scientific goals of the THESEUS ESA/M5 candidate mission, a critical item is a fast (within a few s) and accurate (<15 arcmin) Gamma-Ray Burst and high-energy transient location from a few keV up to hard X-ray energy band. For that purpose, the signal multiplexing based on coded masks is the selected option to achieve this goal. This contribution is implemented by the XGIS Imaging System, based on that technique. The XGIS Imaging System has the heritage of previous payload developments: LEGRI/Minisat-01, INTEGRAL, UFFO/Lomonosov and ASIM/ISS. In particular the XGIS Imaging System is an upgrade of the ASIM system in operation since 2018 on the International Space Station. The scientific goal is similar: to detect a gamma-ray transient. But while ASIM focuses on Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes, THESEUS aims for the GRBs. For each of the two XGIS Cameras, the coded mask is located at 630 mm from the detector layer. The coding pattern is implemented in a Tungsten plate (1 mm thickness) providing a good multiplexing capability up to 150 keV. In that way both XGIS detector layers (based on Si and CsI detectors) have imaging capabilities at the medium - hard X-ray domain. This is an improvement achieved during the current THESEUS Phase-A. The mask is mounted on top of a collimator that provides the mechanical assembly support, as well as good cosmic X-ray background shielding. THESEUS is one of the three missions selected by ESA as fifth medium class mission (M5) candidates in its Cosmic Vision science program, currently under assessment in a phase A study with a planned launch date in 2032. THESEUS is designed to carry on-board two wide and deep sky monitoring instruments for X/gamma-ray transients detection: a wide-field soft X-ray monitor with imaging capability (Soft X-ray Imager, SXI, 0.3 - 5 keV), a hard X-ray, partially-imaging spectroscopic instrument (X and Gamma Imaging Spectrometer, XGIS, 2 keV - 10 MeV), and an optical/near-IR telescope with both imaging and spectroscopic capability (InfraRed Telescope, IRT, 0.7 - 1.8 $\mu$m). The spacecraft will be capable of performing fast repointing of the IRT to the error region provided by the monitors, thus allowing it to detect and localize the transient sources down to a few arcsec accuracy, for immediate identification and redshift determination. The prime goal of the XGIS will be to detect transient sources, with monitoring timescales down to milliseconds, both independently of, or following, up SXI detections, and identify the sources performing localisation at < 15 arcmin and characterize them over a broad energy band, thus providing also unique clues to their emission physics. The XGIS system consists of two independent but identical coded mask cameras, arranged to cover 2 steradians . The XGIS will exploit an innovative technology coupling Silicon Drift Detectors (SDD) with crystal scintillator bars and a very low-noise distributed front-end electronics (ORION ASICs), which will produce a position sensitive detection plane, with a large effective area over a huge energy band (from soft X-rays to soft gamma-rays) with timing resolution down to a few $\mu$s.Here is presented an overview of the XGIS instrument design, its configuration, and capabilities., Comment: Proceedings of the SPIE 2020, paper 11444-303

In the context of the holographic duality, the entanglement entropy of ordinary QFT in a subregion in the boundary is given by a quarter of the area of an minimal surface embedded in the bulk spacetime. This rule has been also extended to a suitable one-parameter generalization of the von-Neuman entropy $\hat{S}_n$ that is related to the R\'enyi entropies $S_n$, as given by the area of a \emph{cosmic brane} minimally coupled with gravity, with a tension related to $n$ that vanishes as $n\to1$, and moreover, this parameter can be analytically extended to arbitrary real values. However, the brane action plays no role in the duality and cannot be considered a part of the theory of gravity, thus it is used as an auxiliary tool to find the correct background geometry. In this work we study the construction of the gravitational (reduced) density matrix from holographic states, whose wave-functionals are described as euclidean path integrals with arbitrary conditions on the asymptotic boundaries, and argue that in general, a non-trivial Hayward term must be haven into account. So we propose that the gravity model with a coupled Nambu-Goto action is not an artificial tool to account for the R\'enyi entropies, but it is present in the own gravity action through a Hayward term. As a result we show that the computations using replicas simplify considerably and we recover the holographic prescriptions for the measures of entanglement entropy; in particular, derive an area law for the original R\'enyi entropies ($S_n$) related to a minimal surface in the $n$ replicated spacetime. In this work we study the Tomita-Takesaki construction for a family of excited states that, in a strongly coupled CFT - at large $N$-, correspond to coherent states in an asymptotically AdS spacetime geometry. We compute the modular flow and modular Hamiltonian associated to these excited states in the Rindler wedge and for a ball shaped entangling surface. Using holography, one can compute the bulk modular flow and construct the Tomita-Takesaki theory for these cases. We also discuss generalizations of the entanglement regions in the bulk and how to estimate the modular Hamiltonian in a large N approximation. Finally we present a holographic formula, based on the BDHM prescription, to compute the modular evolution of operators in the corresponding CFT algebra., Comment: Version accepted in PRD. Biexcitons have been considered as one of the fundamental building blocks for quantum technology because of its overwhelming advantages in generating entangled photon pairs. Although many-body complexes have been demonstrated recently in mono-layer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), the low emission efficiency and scale up capability hinder their applications. Colloidal nanomaterials, with high quantum efficiency and ease of synthesis/processing, are regarded to be an appealing complement to TMDs for biexciton sources. However, a progress towards biexciton emission in colloidal nanomaterials has been challenging largely by small binding energy and ultrafast non-radiative multiexciton recombination. Here, we demonstrate room-temperature biexciton emission in Cu-doped CdSe colloidal quantum wells (CQWs) under continuous-wave excitation with intensity as low as ~10 W/cm2. The characteristics of radiative biexciton states are investigated by their super linear emission with respect to excitation power, thermal stability and transient photophysics. The interaction between the quantum confined host carriers and the dopant ions increases biexciton binding energy by two folds compared to the undoped CQWs. Such strong binding energy together with suppressed Auger recombination and efficient, spectrally narrow photoluminescence in a quasi-2D semiconductor enables sustained biexciton emission at room temperature, providing a potential solution for efficient, scalable and stand-alone quantum devices., Comment: 11 pages, 5 Figures

We develop a new model of laser-matter interaction based on Optical Bloch Equations, which includes photo-ionization, impact ionization, and various relaxation processes typical of dielectric materials. This approach is able to describe the temporal evolution of the electron dynamics in the conduction band driven by few-cycle laser pulses of any wavelength. Moreover, the nonlinear polarization response of both centrosymmetric and non-centrosymmetric materials can be described while ensuring the proper selection rules for the harmonics emission.

The existence and properties of an exact universal excitation waveform for optimal enhancement of directed ratchet transport are deduced from the criticality scenario giving rise to ratchet universality, and confirmed by numerical experiments in the context of a driven overdamped Brownian particle subjected to a vibrating periodic potential. While the universality scenario holds regardless of the waveform of the periodic vibratory excitations involved, it is shown that the enhancement of directed ratchet transport is optimal when the impulse transmitted by those excitations (time integral over a half-period) is maximum. Additionally, the existence of a frequency-dependent optimal value of the relative amplitude of the two excitations involved is illustrated in the simple case of harmonic excitations., Comment: Enlarged version, 8 figures

We have recently presented a geometry dual to a Schwinger-Keldysh closed time contour, with two equal $\beta/2$ length Euclidean sections, which can be thought of as dual to the Thermo Field Dynamics formulation of the boundary CFT. In this work we study non-perturbative holographic excitations of the thermal vacuum by turning on asymptotic Euclidean sources. In the large-$N$ approximation the states are found to be thermal coherent state and we manage to compute its eigenvalues. We pay special attention to the high temperature regime where the manifold is built from pieces of Euclidean and Lorentzian black hole geometries. In this case, the real time segments of the Schwinger-Keldysh contour get connected by an Einstein-Rosen wormhole through the bulk, which we identify as the exterior of a single maximally extended black hole. We present a spherically symmetric aAdS gravity solution with Schwinger-Keldysh boundary condition dual to a CFT at finite temperature defined on a complex time contour. The geometry is built by gluing the exterior of a two-sided AdS Black Hole, the (aAdS) Einstein-Rosen wormhole, with two Euclidean black hole halves. These pieces are interpreted as the gravity duals of the two Euclidean $\beta/2$ segments in the SK path, each coinciding with a Hartle-Hawking-Maldacena (TFD) vacuum state, while the Lorentzian regions naturally describes the real-time evolution of the TFD doubled system. Within the context of Skenderis and van Rees real-time holographic prescription, the new solution should be compared to the Thermal AdS spacetime since both contribute to the gravitational path integral. In this framework, we compute the time ordered 2-pt functions of scalar CFT operators via a non-back-reacting Klein-Gordon field for both backgrounds and confront the results. When solving for the field we find that the gluing leads to a geometric realization of the Unruh trick via a completely holographic prescription. Interesting observations follow from $\langle {\cal O}_L{\cal O}_R\rangle$, which capture details of the entanglement of the (ground) state and the connectivity of the spacetime., Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures

Taming chaos arising from dissipative non-autonomous nonlinear systems by applying additional harmonic excitations is a reliable and widely used procedure nowadays. But the suppressory effectiveness of generic non-harmonic periodic excitations continues to be a significant challenge both to our theoretical understanding and in practical applications. Here we show how the effectiveness of generic suppressory excitations is optimally enhanced when the impulse transmitted by them (time integral over two consecutive zeros) is judiciously controlled in a not obvious way. This is demonstrated experimentally by means of an analog version of a universal model, and confirmed numerically by simulations of such a damped driven system including the presence of noise. We establish upper bounds for the convolution operator acting between interpolation spaces. This will provide several examples of Young Inequalities in different families of function spaces. We use this result to prove a bilinear interpolation theorem and we show applications to the study of bilinear multipliers.

We investigate terahertz emission from two-color fs-laser-induced microplasmas. Under strongest focusing conditions, microplasmas are shown to act as point-sources for broadband terahertz-to-far-infrared radiation, where the emission bandwidth is determined by the plasma density. Semi-analytical modeling allows us to identify scaling laws with respect to important laser parameters. In particular, we find that the optical-to-THz conversion efficiency crucially depends on the focusing conditions. We use this insight to demonstrate by means of Maxwell-consistent 3D simulations, that for only 10-$\mu$J laser energy a conversion efficiency well above $10^{-4}$ can be achieved.

It is commonly accepted that states in a conformal field theory correspond to classical spacetimes with Anti-de-Sitter asymptotics. In this work we give a prescription for the CFT states with a dual classical spacetime and, using basic holographic rules, show that they are holographically connected to coherent states in the large-N limit, or by considering linearized perturbations. We also point out implications in the spacetime emergence mechanism, for instance, the (entangled) state dual to the black hole should be properly described as a quantum superposition of products of these states. We compute time-ordered 2- and 3-pt correlation functions of CFT scalar operators between generic in/out states. The calculation is holographically carried out by considering a non backreacting AdS scalar field with a $\lambda \phi^3$ self-interaction term on a combination of Euclidean and Lorentzian AdS sections following the Skenderis-van Rees prescription. We show that, although working in an essentially different set up, the final result for the 3-pt correlators agree with those of Rastelli et al. for Euclidean AdS. By analyzing the inner product between the in/out excited states in the large $N$ approximation, we argue that a cubic bulk interaction deforms the excited states from coherent into \emph{squeezed}. Finally, a diagrammatic interpretation of the results suggests some general properties for the $n$-point correlation functions between excited states., Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures

The aim of this work is to study fiber derivatives associated to Lagrangian and Hamiltonian functions describing the dynamics of a higher-order autonomous dynamical system. More precisely, given a function in $T^*T^{(k-1)}Q$, we find necessary and sufficient conditions for such a function to describe the dynamics of a kth-order autonomous dynamical system, thus being a kth-order Hamiltonian function. Then, we give a suitable definition of (hyper)regularity for these higher-order Hamiltonian functions in terms of their fiber derivative. The Skenderis-van Rees prescription, which allows the calculation of time-ordered correlation functions of local operators in CFT's using holographic methods is studied and applied for excited states. Calculation of correlators and matrix elements of local CFT operators between generic in/out states are carried out in global Lorentzian AdS. We find the precise form of such states, obtain an holographic formula to compute the inner product between them, and using the consistency with other known prescriptions, we argue that the in/out excited states built according to the Skenderis-Van Rees prescription correspond to {\it coherent} states in the (large-$N$) AdS-Hilbert space. This is confirmed by explicit holographic computations. We introduce a new image cytometer design for detection of very small particulate and demonstrate its capability in water analysis. The device is a compact microscope composed of off the shelf components, such as a light emitting diode (LED) source, a complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) image sensor, and a specific combination of optical lenses that allow, through an appropriate software, Fourier transform processing of the sample volume. Waterborne microorganisms, such as Escherichia coli (E. coli), Legionella pneumophila (L. pneumophila) and Phytoplankton, are detected by interrogating the volume sample either in a fluorescent or label-free mode, i.e. with or without fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) molecules attached to the micro-organisms, respectively. We achieve a sensitivity of 50 cells/ml, which can be further increased to 0.2 cells/ml by preconcentrating an initial sample volume of 500 ml with an adhoc fluidic system. We also prove the capability of the proposed image cytometer of differentiating microbiological populations by size with a resolution of 3 um and of operating in real contaminated water.

The geometric framework for the Hamilton-Jacobi theory developed in previous works is extended for multisymplectic first-order classical field theories. The Hamilton-Jacobi problem is stated for the Lagrangian and the Hamiltonian formalisms of these theories as a particular case of a more general problem, and the classical Hamilton-Jacobi equation for field theories is recovered from this geometrical setting. Particular and complete solutions to these problems are defined and characterized in several equivalent ways in both formalisms, and the equivalence between them is proved. The use of distributions in jet bundles that represent the solutions to the field equations is the fundamental tool in this formulation. Here, we show how topological resonant-like amplification effects in scale-free networks of signaling devices are drastically reduced when phase disorder in the external signals is considered. In this Thesis we develop the geometric formulations for higher-order autonomous and non-autonomous dynamical systems, and second-order field theories. In all cases, the physical information of the system is given in terms of a Lagrangian function/density, or a Hamiltonian that admits Lagrangian counterpart. We present a new multisymplectic framework for second-order classical field theories which is based on an extension of the unified Lagrangian-Hamiltonian formalism to these kinds of systems. This model provides a straightforward and simple way to define the Poincar\'e-Cartan form and clarifies the construction of the Legendre map (univocally obtained as a consequence of the constraint algorithm). Likewise, it removes the undesirable arbitrariness in the solutions to the field equations, which are analyzed in-depth, and written in terms of holonomic sections and multivector fields. In this paper we consider an intrinsic point of view to describe the equations of motion for higher-order variational problems with constraints on higher-order trivial principal bundles. Our techniques are an adaptation of the classical Skinner-Rusk approach for the case of Lagrangian dynamics with higher-order constraints. We study a regular case where it is possible to establish a symplectic framework and, as a consequence, to obtain a unique vector field determining the dynamics. We show that directed ratchet transport of a driven overdamped Brownian particle subjected to a spatially periodic and symmetric potential can be reliably controlled by tailoring a biharmonic temporal force, in coherence with the degree-of-symmetry-breaking mechanism. We demonstrate that the effect of finite temperature on the purely deterministic ratchet scenario can be understood as an \textit{effective noise-induced change} of the potential barrier which is in turn controlled by the degree-of-symmetry-breaking mechanism. This work is devoted to giving a geometric framework for describing higher-order non-autonomous mechanical systems. The starting point is to extend the Lagrangian-Hamiltonian unified formalism of Skinner and Rusk for these kinds of systems, generalizing previous developments for higher-order autonomous mechanical systems and first-order non-autonomous mechanical systems. We propose a simple configuration of a one-dimensional parallel array of Josephson junctions in which the pinning potential for trapped fluxons lacks inversion symmetry (ratchet potential). This sytem can be modelised by a set of non-linear pendula with alternating lengths and harmonic couplings.
