We identify persistent oscillations in a nonintegrable quantum Ising chain left behind by a rapid transition into a ferromagnetic phase. In the integrable chain with nearest-neighbor (NN) interactions, the nature, origin, and decay of post-transition oscillations are tied to the Kibble-Zurek mechanism (KZM). However, when coupling to the next nearest neighbor (NNN) is added, the resulting nonintegrable Ising chain (still in the quantum Ising chain universality class) supports persistent post-transition oscillation: KZM-like oscillations turn into persistent oscillations of transverse magnetization. Their longevity in our simulations is likely limited only by the numerical accuracy. Their period differs from the decaying KZM oscillation but their amplitude depends on quench rate. Moreover, they can be excited by driving in resonance with the excitations' energy gap. Thus, while one might have expected that the integrability-breaking NNN coupling would facilitate relaxation, the oscillations we identify are persistent. At low to medium transverse fields, they are associated with Cooper pairs of Bogoliubov quasiparticles -- kinks. Adiabatic preparation of a critical ground state is hampered by the closing of its energy gap as the system size increases. However, this gap is directly relevant only for a uniform ramp, where a control parameter in the Hamiltonian is tuned uniformly in space towards the quantum critical point. Here, we consider inhomogeneous ramps in two dimensions: initially, the parameter is made critical at the center of a lattice, from where the critical region expands at a fixed velocity. In the 1D and 2D quantum Ising models, which have a well-defined speed of sound at the critical point, the ramp becomes adiabatic with a subsonic velocity. This subsonic ramp can prepare the critical state faster than a uniform one. Moreover, in both a model of $p$-wave paired 2D fermions and the Kitaev model, the critical dispersion is anisotropic -- linear with a nonzero velocity in one direction and quadratic in the other -- but the gap is still inversely proportional to the linear size of the critical region, with a coefficient proportional to the nonzero velocity. We present an open-source tensor network Python library for quantum many-body simulations. At its core is an abelian-symmetric tensor, implemented as a sparse block structure managed by logical layer on top of dense multi-dimensional array backend. This serves as the basis for higher-level tensor networks algorithms, operating on matrix product states and projected entangled pair states, implemented here. Using appropriate backend, such as PyTorch, gives direct access to automatic differentiation (AD) for cost-function gradient calculations and execution on GPUs or other supported accelerators. We show the library performance in simulations with infinite projected entangled-pair states, such as finding the ground states with AD, or simulating thermal states of the Hubbard model via imaginary time evolution. Quantum computers hold the promise of solving certain problems that lie beyond the reach of conventional computers. Establishing this capability, especially for impactful and meaningful problems, remains a central challenge. One such problem is the simulation of nonequilibrium dynamics of a magnetic spin system quenched through a quantum phase transition. State-of-the-art classical simulations demand resources that grow exponentially with system size. Here we show that superconducting quantum annealing processors can rapidly generate samples in close agreement with solutions of the Schr\"odinger equation. We demonstrate area-law scaling of entanglement in the model quench in two-, three- and infinite-dimensional spin glasses, supporting the observed stretched-exponential scaling of effort for classical approaches. We assess approximate methods based on tensor networks and neural networks and conclude that no known approach can achieve the same accuracy as the quantum annealer within a reasonable timeframe. Thus quantum annealers can answer questions of practical importance that classical computers cannot.

The Minimally Entangled Typical Thermal States (METTS) are an ensemble of pure states, equivalent to the Gibbs thermal state, that can be efficiently represented by tensor networks. In this article, we use the Projected Entangled Pair States (PEPS) ansatz as to represent METTS on a two-dimensional (2D) lattice. While Matrix Product States (MPS) are less efficient for 2D systems due to their complexity growing exponentially with the lattice size, PEPS provide a more tractable approach. To substantiate the prowess of PEPS in modeling METTS (dubbed as PEPS-METTS), we benchmark it against the purification method for the 2D quantum Ising model at its critical temperature. Our analysis reveals that PEPS-METTS achieves accurate long-range correlations with significantly lower bond dimensions. We further corroborate this finding in the 2D Fermi Hubbard model at half-filling. At a technical level, we introduce an efficient \textit{zipper} method to obtain PEPS boundary matrix product states needed to compute expectation values. Resonant transport occurs when there is a matching of frequencies across some spatial medium, increasing the efficiency of shuttling particles from one reservoir to another. We demonstrate that in a periodically driven, many--body titled lattice, there are sets of spatially fractured resonances. These ``emanate'' from two essential resonances due to scattering off internal surfaces created when the driving frequency and many--body interaction strength vary, a scattering reminiscent of lens flare. The confluence of these fractured resonances dramatically enhances transport. At one confluence, the interaction strength is finite and the essential resonance arises due to the interplay of interaction with the counter--rotating terms of the periodic drive. We discuss the origin and structure of the fractured resonances, as well as the scaling of the conductance with system parameters. Extended reservoirs provide a framework for capturing macroscopic, continuum environments, such as metallic electrodes driving a current through a nanoscale contact, impurity, or material. We examine the application of this approach to periodically driven systems, specifically in the context of quantum transport. As with non--equilibrium steady states in time--independent scenarios, the current displays a Kramers' turnover including the formation of a plateau region that captures the physical, continuum limit response. We demonstrate that a simple stability criteria identifies an appropriate relaxation rate to target this physical plateau. Using this approach, we study quantum transport through a periodically driven tilted lattice coupled to two metallic reservoirs held at a finite bias and temperature. We use this model to benchmark the extended reservoir approach and assess the stability criteria. The approach recovers well--understood physical behavior in the limit of weak system--reservoir coupling. Extended reservoirs enable addressing strong coupling and non--linear response as well, where we analyze how transport responds to the dynamics inside the driven lattice. These results set the foundations for the use of extended reservoir approach for periodically driven, quantum systems, such as many--body Floquet states., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures

The simulation of open many-body quantum systems is challenging, requiring methods to both handle exponentially large Hilbert spaces and represent the influence of (infinite) particle and energy reservoirs. These two requirements are at odds with each other: Larger collections of modes can increase the fidelity of the reservoir representation but come at a substantial computational cost when included in numerical many-body techniques. An increasingly utilized and natural approach to control the growth of the reservoir is to cast a finite set of reservoir modes themselves as an open quantum system. There are, though, many routes to do so. Here, we introduce an accumulative reservoir construction -- an ARC -- that employs a series of partial refreshes of the extended reservoirs. Through this series, the representation accumulates the character of an infinite reservoir. This provides a unified framework for both continuous (Lindblad) relaxation and a recently introduced periodically refresh approach (i.e., discrete resets of the reservoir modes to equilibrium). In the context of quantum transport, we show that the phase space for physical behavior separates into discrete and continuous relaxation regimes with the boundary between them set by natural, physical timescales. Both of these regimes "turnover" into regions of over- and under-damped coherence in a way reminiscent of Kramers' crossover. We examine how the range of behavior impacts errors and the computational cost, including within tensor networks. These results provide the first comparison of distinct extended reservoir approaches, showing that they have different scaling of error versus cost (with a bridging ARC regime decaying fastest). Exploiting the enhanced scaling, though, will be challenging, as it comes with a substantial increase in (operator space) entanglement entropy., Comment: 27 pages, 18 figures

The Hubbard model is a longstanding problem in the theory of strongly correlated electrons and a very active one in the experiments with ultracold fermionic atoms. Motivated by current and prospective quantum simulations, we apply a two-dimensional tensor network, an infinite projected entangled pair state, evolved in imaginary time by the neighborhood tensor update algorithm working directly in the thermodynamic limit. With U(1)xU(1) symmetry and the bond dimensions up to 29, we generate thermal states down to the temperature of 0.17 times the hopping rate. We obtain results for spin and charge correlators, unaffected by boundary effects. The spin correlators, measurable in prospective ultracold atoms experiments attempting to approach the thermodynamic limit, provide evidence of disruption of the antiferromagnetic background with mobile holes in a slightly doped Hubbard model. The charge correlators reveal the presence of hole-doublon pairs near half filling and signatures of hole-hole repulsion on doping. Linear quench of the transverse field drives the quantum Ising chain across a quantum critical point from the paramagnetic to the ferromagnetic phase. We focus on normal and anomalous quadratic correlators between fermionic kink creation and annihilation operators. They depend not only on the Kibble-Zurek (KZ) correlation length but also on a dephasing length scale, which differs from the KZ length by a logarithmic correction. Additional slowing down of the ramp in the ferromagnetic phase further increases the dephasing length and suppresses the anomalous correlator. The quadratic correlators enter Pfaffians that yield experimentally relevant kink correlation functions, the probability distribution of ferromagnetic domain sizes, and, closely related, emptiness formation probability. The latter takes the form of a Pfaffian of a block Toeplitz matrix that allows for some analytic asymptotes. Finally, we obtain further insight into the structure of the state at the end of the ramp by interpreting it as a paired state of fermionic kinks characterized by its pair wave function. All those quantities are sensitive to quantum coherence between eigenstates with different numbers of kinks, thus making them a convenient probe of the quantumness of a quantum simulator platform., Comment: 14 pages; minor improvements in presentation; to appear in Phys. It is now widely accepted that quenches through the critical region of quantum phase transitions result in post-transition states populated with topological defects -- analogs of the classical topological defects. However, consequences of the very non-classical fact that the state after a quench is a {\it superposition} of distinct, broken-symmetry vacua with different numbers and locations of defects have remained largely unexplored. We identify coherent quantum oscillations induced by such superpositions in observables complementary to the one involved in symmetry breaking. These oscillations satisfy Kibble-Zurek dynamical scaling laws with the quench rate, with an instantaneous oscillation frequency set primarily by the gap of the system. In addition to the obvious fundamental significance of a superposition of different broken symmetry states, quantum coherent oscillations can be used to verify unitarity and test for imperfections of the experimental implementations of quantum simulators., Comment: version to appear in Phys. Sampling a diverse set of high-quality solutions for hard optimization problems is of great practical relevance in many scientific disciplines and applications, such as artificial intelligence and operations research. One of the main open problems is the lack of ergodicity, or mode collapse, for typical stochastic solvers based on Monte Carlo techniques leading to poor generalization or lack of robustness to uncertainties. Currently, there is no universal metric to quantify such performance deficiencies across various solvers. Here, we introduce a new diversity measure for quantifying the number of independent approximate solutions for NP-hard optimization problems. Among others, it allows benchmarking solver performance by a required time-to-diversity (TTD), a generalization of often used time-to-solution (TTS). We illustrate this metric by comparing the sampling power of various quantum annealing strategies. In particular, we show that the inhomogeneous quantum annealing schedules can redistribute and suppress the emergence of topological defects by controlling space-time separated critical fronts, leading to an advantage over standard quantum annealing schedules with respect to both TTS and TTD for finding rare solutions. Using path-integral Monte Carlo simulations for up to 1600 qubits, we demonstrate that nonequilibrium driving of quantum fluctuations, guided by efficient approximate tensor network contractions, can significantly reduce the fraction of hard instances for random frustrated 2D spin-glasses with local fields. Specifically, we observe that by creating a class of algorithmic quantum phase transitions, the diversity of solutions can be enhanced by up to 40% with the fraction of hard-to-sample instances reducing by more than 25%., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, close to published version

The quantum Kibble-Zurek mechanism (QKZM) predicts universal dynamical behavior near the quantum phase transitions (QPTs). It is now well understood for the one-dimensional quantum matter. Higher-dimensional systems, however, remain a challenge, complicated by the fundamentally different character of the associated QPTs and their underlying conformal field theories. In this work, we take the first steps toward theoretical exploration of the QKZM in two dimensions for interacting quantum matter. We study the dynamical crossing of the QPT in the paradigmatic Ising model by a joint effort of modern state-of-the-art numerical methods, including artificial neural networks and tensor networks. As a central result, we quantify universal QKZM behavior close to the QPT. We also note that, upon traversing further into the ferromagnetic regime, deviations from the QKZM prediction appear. We explain the observed behavior by proposing an {\it extended QKZM} taking into account spectral information as well as phase ordering. Quantum transport simulations often use explicit, yet finite, electronic reservoirs. These should converge to the correct continuum limit, albeit with a trade-off between discretization and computational cost. Here, we study this interplay for extended reservoir simulations, where relaxation maintains a bias or temperature drop across the system. Our analysis begins in the non-interacting limit, where we parameterize different discretizations to compare them on an even footing. For many-body systems, we develop a method to estimate the relaxation that best approximates the continuum by controlling virtual transitions in Kramers' turnover for the current. While some discretizations are more efficient for calculating currents, there is little benefit with regard to the overall state of the system. Any gains become marginal for many-body, tensor network simulations, where the relative performance of discretizations varies when sweeping other numerical controls. These results indicate that a given reservoir discretization may have little impact on numerical efficiency for certain computational tools. The choice of a relaxation parameter, however, is crucial, and the method we develop provides a reliable estimate of the optimal relaxation for finite reservoirs., Comment: Manuscript + SI

Quantum transport simulations are rapidly evolving and now encompass well-controlled tensor network techniques for many-body limits. One powerful approach combines matrix product states with extended reservoirs. In this method, continuous reservoirs are represented by explicit, discretized counterparts and a chemical potential or temperature drop is maintained by external relaxation. Currents are strongly influenced by relaxation when it is very weak or strong, resulting in a simulation analog of Kramers' turnover for solution-phase chemical reactions. At intermediate relaxation, the intrinsic conductance, that given by the Landauer or Meir-Wingreen expressions, moderates the current. We demonstrate that strong impurity scattering (i.e., a small steady-state current) reveals anomalous transport regimes within this methodology at weak-to-moderate and moderate-to-strong relaxation. The former is due to virtual transitions and the latter to unphysical broadening of the populated density of states. Thus, the turnover analog has $five$ standard transport regimes, further constraining the parameters that lead to recovery of the intrinsic conductance. In the worst case, the common strategy of choosing a relaxation strength proportional to the reservoir level spacing can prevent convergence to the continuum limit. This advocates a simulation strategy where one utilizes the current versus relaxation turnover profiles to identify simulation parameters that most efficiently reproduce the intrinsic physical behavior., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures

The two-dimensional infinite projected entangled pair states tensor network is evolved in imaginary time with the full update (FU) algorithm to simulate the Shastry-Sutherland model in a magnetic field at finite temperature directly in the thermodynamic limit. We focus on the phase transition into the $m=1/2$ magnetization plateau, which was observed in experiments on SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$. For the largest simulated bond dimension, the early evolution in the high-temperature regime is simulated with the simple update (SU) scheme and then, as the correlation length increases, continued with the FU scheme towards the critical regime. We apply a small symmetry-breaking bias field and then extrapolate towards zero bias using a simple scaling theory in the bias field. The combined SU + FU scheme provides an accurate estimate of the critical temperature, even though the results could not be fully converged in the bond dimension in the vicinity of the transition. The critical temperature estimate is improved with a generalized scaling theory that combines two divergent length scales: One due to the bias, and the other due to the finite bond dimension. The obtained results are consistent with the transition being in the universality class of the two-dimensional classical Ising model. The estimated critical temperature is $3.5(2)$ K, which is well above the temperature $2.1$ K used in the experiments., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures and 5 tables

High performance large scale graph analytics is essential to timely analyze relationships in big data sets. Conventional processor architectures suffer from inefficient resource usage and bad scaling on graph workloads. To enable efficient and scalable graph analysis, Intel developed the Programmable Integrated Unified Memory Architecture (PIUMA). PIUMA consists of many multi-threaded cores, fine-grained memory and network accesses, a globally shared address space and powerful offload engines. This paper presents the PIUMA architecture, and provides initial performance estimations, projecting that a PIUMA node will outperform a conventional compute node by one to two orders of magnitude. Furthermore, PIUMA continues to scale across multiple nodes, which is a challenge in conventional multinode setups.

Driving a homogeneous system across a quantum phase transition in a quench-time $\tau_Q$ generates excitations on wavelengths longer than the Kibble-Zurek (KZ) length $\hat\xi\propto\tau_Q^{\nu/(1+z\nu)}$ within the KZ time window $\hat t\propto\tau_Q^{z\nu/(1+z\nu)}$, where $z$ and $\nu$ are the critical exponents. Quenches designed with local time-dependent inhomogeneity can introduce a gap in the spectrum. For a variety of setups with short-range interactions, they have been shown to suppress excitations if the spatial velocity of the inhomogenous front is below the characteristic KZ velocity $\hat v \propto \hat\xi/\hat t$. Ising-like models with long-range interactions can have no sonic horizon, spreading information instantaneously across the system. Usually, this should imply that inhomogenous transitions will render the dynamics adiabatic regardless of the front velocity. However, we show that we get an adiabatic transition with no defects only when the inhomogeneous front moves slower than a characteristic crossover velocity $\tilde v \propto \theta^{(z-1)\nu/(1+\nu)}$, where $\theta$ is the slope of the inhomogeneous front at the critical point. The existence of this crossover velocity and adiabaticity of the model is a consequence of the energy gap in the quasiparticle spectrum that is opened by the inhomogeneity. A system gradually driven through a symmetry-breaking phase transition is subject to the Kibble-Zurek mechanism (KZM). As a consequence of the critical slowing down, its state cannot follow local equilibrium, and its evolution becomes non-adiabatic near the critical point. In the simplest approximation, that stage can be regarded as "impulse" where the state of the system remains unchanged. It leads to the correct KZM scaling laws. However, such "freeze-out" might suggest that the coherence length of the nascent order parameter remains unchanged as the critical region is traversed. By contrast, the original causality-based discussion emphasized the role of the {\it sonic horizon}: domains of the broken symmetry phase can expand with a velocity limited by the speed of the relevant sound. This effect was demonstrated in the quantum Ising chain where the dynamical exponent $z=1$ and quasiparticles excited by the transition have a fixed speed of sound. To elucidate the role of the sonic horizon, in this paper we study two systems with $z>1$ where the speed of sound is no longer fixed, and the fastest excited quasiparticles set the size of the sonic horizon. Their effective speed decays with the increasing transition time. In the extreme case, the dynamical exponent $z$ can diverge such as in the Griffiths region of the random Ising chain where localization of excited quasiparticles freezes the growth of the correlation range when the critical region is traversed. Of particular interest is an example with $z<1$ -- the long-range extended Ising chain, where there is no upper limit to the velocity of excited quasiparticles with small momenta. Initially, the power-law tail of the correlation function grows adiabatically, but in the non-adiabatic stage it lags behind the adiabatic evolution -- in accord with a generalized Lieb-Robinson bound., Comment: minor corrections, accepted in PRB

Tensor networks are a powerful tool for many-body ground states with limited entanglement. These methods can nonetheless fail for certain time-dependent processes - such as quantum transport or quenches - where entanglement growth is linear in time. Matrix-product-state decompositions of the resulting out-of-equilibrium states require a bond dimension that grows exponentially, imposing a hard limit on simulation timescales. However, in the case of transport, if the reservoir modes of a closed system are arranged according to their scattering structure, the entanglement growth can be made logarithmic. Here, we apply this ansatz to open systems via extended reservoirs that have explicit relaxation. This enables transport calculations that can access steady states, time dynamics and noise, and periodic driving (e.g., Floquet states). We demonstrate the approach by calculating the transport characteristics of an open, interacting system. These results open a path to scalable and numerically systematic many-body transport calculations with tensor networks., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

We show that the peak which can be observed in fidelity susceptibility around the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition is shifted from the quantum critical point (QCP) at $J_c$ to $J^*$ in the gapped phase by a value $|J^* - J_c| = B^2/36$, where $B^2$ is a transition width controlling the asymptotic form of the correlation length $\xi \sim \exp(-B/\sqrt{|J-J_c|})$ in that phase. This is in contrast to the conventional continuous QCP where the maximum is an indicator of the position of the critical point. The shape of the peak is universal, emphasizing the close connection between fidelity susceptibility and the correlation length. We support those arguments with numerical matrix product state simulations of the one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model in the thermodynamic limit, where the broad peak is located at $J^*=0.212$ that is significantly different from $J_c=0.3048(3)$. In the spin-$3/2$ XXZ model the shift from $J_c=1$ to $J^*=1.0021$ is small but the narrow universal peak is much more pronounced over the non-universal background., Comment: published version, 6 pages, 2 figures

The Kibble-Zurek mechanism predicts the formation of topological defects and other excitations that quantify how much a quantum system driven across a quantum critical point fails to be adiabatic. We point out that, thanks to the divergent linear susceptibility at the critical point, even a tiny symmetry breaking bias can restore the adiabaticity. The minimal required bias scales like $\tau_Q^{-\beta\delta/(1+z\nu)}$, where $\beta,\delta,z,\nu$ are the critical exponents and $\tau_Q$ is a quench time. We test this prediction by DMRG simulations of the quantum Ising chain. The recognition that large classes of quantum many-body systems have limited entanglement in the ground and low-lying excited states led to dramatic advances in their numerical simulation via so-called tensor networks. However, global dynamics elevates many particles into excited states, and can lead to macroscopic entanglement and the failure of tensor networks. Here, we show that for quantum transport -- one of the most important cases of this failure -- the fundamental issue is the canonical basis in which the scenario is cast: When particles flow through an interface, they scatter, generating a "bit" of entanglement between spatial regions with each event. The frequency basis naturally captures that -- in the long-time limit and in the absence of inelastic scattering -- particles tend to flow from a state with one frequency to a state of identical frequency. Recognizing this natural structure yields a striking -- potentially exponential in some cases -- increase in simulation efficiency, greatly extending the attainable spatial- and time-scales, and broadening the scope of tensor network simulation to hitherto inaccessible classes of non-equilibrium many-body problems., Comment: Published version; 6+9 pages; 4+4 figures; Added: an example of interacting reservoirs, further evidence on performance scaling, and extended discussion of the numerical details

We demonstrate how to compute the low energy spectrum for small ($N\le 50$), but otherwise arbitrary, spin-glass instances using modern Graphics Processing Units or similar heterogeneous architecture. Our algorithm performs an exhaustive (i.e., brute-force) search of all possible configurations to select $S\ll 2^N$ lowest ones together with their corresponding energies. We mainly focus on the Ising model defined on an arbitrary graph. An open-source implementation based on CUDA Fortran and a suitable Python wrapper are provided. As opposed to heuristic approaches, ours is exact and thus can serve as a references point to benchmark other algorithms and hardware, including quantum and digital annealers. Our implementation offers unprecedented speed and efficiency already visible on commodity hardware. At the same time, it can be easily launched on professional, high-end graphics cards virtually at no extra effort. As a practical application, we employ it to demonstrate that the recent Matrix Product State based algorithm-despite its one-dimensional nature-can still accurately approximate the low energy spectrum of fully connected graphs of size $N$ approaching $50$.

We devise a deterministic algorithm to efficiently sample high-quality solutions of certain spin-glass systems that encode hard optimization problems. We employ tensor networks to represent the Gibbs distribution of all possible configurations. Using approximate tensor-network contractions, we are able to efficiently map the low-energy spectrum of some quasi-two-dimensional Hamiltonians. We exploit the local nature of the problems to compute spin-glass droplets geometries, which provides a new form of compression of the low-energy spectrum. It naturally extends to sampling, which otherwise, for exact contraction, is $\#$P-complete. In particular, for one of the hardest known problem-classes devised on chimera graphs known as deceptive cluster loops and for up to $2048$ spins, we find on the order of $10^{10}$ degenerate ground states in a single run of our algorithm, computing better solutions than have been reported on some hard instances. The Aubry-Andr\'e 1D lattice model describes a particle hopping in a pseudo-random potential. Depending on its strength $\lambda$, all eigenstates are either localized ($\lambda>1$) or delocalized ($\lambda<1$). Near the transition, the localization length diverges like $\xi\sim(\lambda-1)^{-\nu}$ with $\nu=1$. We show that when the particle is initially prepared in a localized ground state and the potential strength is slowly ramped down across the transition, then -- in analogy with the Kibble-Zurek mechanism -- it enters the delocalized phase having finite localization length $\hat\xi\sim\tau_Q^{\nu/(1+z\nu)}$. Here $\tau_Q$ is ramp/quench time and $z$ is a dynamical exponent. At $\lambda=1$ we determine $z\simeq2.37$ from the power law scaling of energy gap with lattice size $L$. Even though for infinite $L$ the model is gapless, we show that the gap relevant for excitation during the ramp remains finite. Close to the critical point it scales like $\xi^{-z}$ with the value of $z$ determined by the finite size scaling. It is the gap between the ground state and the lowest of those excited states that overlap with the ground state enough to be accessible for excitation. We propose an experiment with a non-interacting BEC to test our prediction. In the past few years, cosmic-rays beyond the GZK cut-off ($E > 5 \times 10^{19}$ eV) have been detected by leading collaborations such as Pierre Auger Observatory. Such observations raise many questions as to how such energies can be reached and what source can possibly produce them. Although at lower energies, mechanisms such as Fermi acceleration in supernovae front shocks seem to be favored, top-down scenarios have been proposed to explain the existence of ultra-high energy cosmic-rays: the decay of super-massive long-lived particles produced in the early Universe may yield to a flux of ultra-high energy photons. Such photons might be presently generating so called super-preshowers, an extended cosmic-ray shower with a spatial distribution that can be as wide as the Earth diameter. The Cosmic Ray Extremely Distributed Observatory (CREDO) mission is to find such events by means of a network of detectors spread around the globe. CREDO's strategy is to connect existing detectors and create a worldwide network of cosmic-ray observatories. Moreover, citizen-science constitutes an important pillar of our approach. We conduct experimental simulations of many body quantum systems using a \emph{hybrid} classical-quantum algorithm. In our setup, the wave function of the transverse field quantum Ising model is represented by a restricted Boltzmann machine. This neural network is then trained using variational Monte Carlo assisted by a D-Wave quantum sampler to find the ground state energy. Our results clearly demonstrate that already the first generation of quantum computers can be harnessed to tackle non-trivial problems concerning physics of many body quantum systems., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We introduce a phenomenological theory for many-body control of critical phenomena by engineering causally-induced gaps for quantum Hamiltonian systems. The core mechanisms are controlling information flow within and/or between clusters that are created near a quantum critical point. To this end, we construct inhomogeneous quantum phase transitions via designing spatio-temporal quantum fluctuations. We show how non-equilibrium evolution of disordered quantum systems can create new effective correlation length scales and effective dynamical critical exponents. In particular, we construct a class of causally-induced non-adiabatic quantum annealing transitions for strongly disordered quantum Ising chains leading to exponential suppression of topological defects beyond standard Kibble-Zurek predictions. Using exact numerical techniques for 1D quantum Hamiltonian systems, we demonstrate that our approach exponentially outperform adiabatic quantum computing. Using Strong-Disorder Renormalization Group (SDRG), we demonstrate the universality of inhomogeneous quantum critical dynamics and exhibit the causal zones reconstructions during SDRG flow. We derive a scaling relation for minimal causal gaps showing they narrow more slowly than any polynomial with increasing size of system, in contrast to stretched exponential scaling in standard adiabatic evolution. We analyze the problem of extracting the correlation length from infinite matrix product states (MPS) and corner transfer matrix (CTM) simulations. When the correlation length is calculated directly from the transfer matrix, it is typically significantly underestimated for finite bond dimensions used in numerical simulation. This is true even when one considers ground states at a distance from the critical point. We introduce extrapolation procedure to overcome this problem. To that end we quantify how much the dominant part of the MPS/CTM transfer matrix spectrum deviates from being continuous. The latter is necessary to capture the exact asymptotics of the correlation function where the exponential decay is typically modified by an additional algebraic term. By extrapolating such a refinement parameter to zero, we show that we are able to recover the exact value of the correlation length with high accuracy. In a generic setting, our method reduces the error by a factor of $\sim 100$ as compared to the results without extrapolation and a factor of $\sim 10$ as compared to simple extrapolation schemes using bond dimension. We test our approach in a number of solvable models both in 1d and 2d. Subsequently, we apply it to 1d XXZ spin-$\frac32$ and the Bose-Hubbard models in a massive regime in the vicinity of BKT critical point. We then fit the scaling form of the correlation length and extract the position of the critical point and obtain results comparable or better than those of other state-of-the-art numerical methods. Finally, we show how the algebraic part of the correlation function asymptotics can be directly recovered from the scaling of the dominant form factor within our approach. Our method provides the means for detailed studies of phase diagrams of quantum models in 1d and, through the finite correlation length scaling of projected entangled pair states, also in 2d., Comment: published version

We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of the self-diffusion of ammonia on exfoliated graphite. Using neutron time-of-flight spectroscopy we are able to resolve the ultrafast diffusion process of adsorbed ammonia, NH$_3$, on graphite. Together with van der Waals corrected density functional theory calculations we show that the diffusion of NH$_3$ follows a hopping motion on a weakly corrugated potential energy surface with an activation energy of about 4 meV which is particularly low for this type of diffusive motion. The hopping motion includes further a significant number of long jumps and the diffusion constant of ammonia adsorbed on graphite is determined with $D=3.9 \cdot 10^{-8}~\mbox{m}^2 /\mbox{s}$ at 94 K.

Excitations in a spin ice behave as magnetic monopoles, and their population and mobility control the dynamics of a spin ice at low temperature. CdEr$_2$Se$_4$ is reported to have the Pauling entropy characteristic of a spin ice, but its dynamics are three-orders of magnitude faster than the canonical spin ice Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$. In this letter we use diffuse neutron scattering to show that both CdEr$_2$Se$_4$ and CdEr$_2$S$_4$ support a dipolar spin ice state -- the host phase for a Coulomb gas of emergent magnetic monopoles. These Coulomb gases have similar parameters to that in Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, i.e. dilute and uncorrelated, so cannot provide three-orders faster dynamics through a larger monopole population alone. We investigate the monopole dynamics using ac susceptometry and neutron spin echo spectroscopy, and verify the crystal electric field Hamiltonian of the Er$^{3+}$ ions using inelastic neutron scattering. A quantitative calculation of the monopole hopping rate using our Coulomb gas and crystal electric field parameters shows that the fast dynamics in CdEr$_2$X$_4$ (X = Se, S) are primarily due to much faster monopole hopping. Our work suggests that CdEr$_2$X$_4$ offer the possibility to study alternative spin ice ground states and dynamics, with equilibration possible at much lower temperatures than the rare earth pyrochlore examples., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters

We address the question whether the super-Heisenberg scaling for quantum estimation is realizable. We unify the results of two approaches. In the first one, the original system is compared with its copy rotated by the parameter dependent dynamics. If the parameter is coupled to the one-body part of the Hamiltonian the precision of its estimation is known to scale at most as $N^{-1}$ (Heisenberg scaling) in terms of the number of elementary subsystems used, $N$. The second approach considers fidelity at criticality often leading to an apparent super-Heisenberg scaling. However, scaling of time needed to ensure adiabaticity of the evolution brings back the the Heisenberg limit. We illustrate the general theory on a ferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chain which exhibits such super-Heisenberg scaling of fidelity around the critical value of the magnetic field. Even an elementary estimator represented by a single-site magnetization already outperforms the Heisenberg behavior providing the $N^{-1.5}$ scaling. In this case Fisher information sets the ultimate scaling as $N^{-1.75}$ which can be saturated by measuring magnetization on all sites simultaneously. We discuss universal scaling predictions of the estimation precision offered by such observables, both at zero and finite temperatures, and support them with numerical simulations in the model. We provide an experimental proposal of realization of the considered model via mapping the system to ultra-cold bosons in periodically shaken optical lattice. We compare the time evolution of entanglement measures after local operator excitation in the critical Ising model with predictions from conformal field theory. For the spin operator and its descendants we find that Renyi entropies of a block of spins increase by a constant that matches the logarithm of the quantum dimension of the conformal family. However, for the energy operator we find a small constant contribution that differs from the conformal field theory answer equal to zero. We argue that the mismatch is caused by the subtleties in the identification between the local operators in conformal field theory and their lattice counterpart. Our results indicate that evolution of entanglement measures in locally excited states not only constraints this identification, but also can be used to extract non-trivial data about the conformal field theory that governs the critical point. We generalize our analysis to the Ising model away from the critical point, states with multiple local excitations, as well as the evolution of the relative entropy after local operator excitation and discuss universal features that emerge from numerics., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures. close to the published version

A Gibbs operator $e^{-\beta H}$ for a 2D lattice system with a Hamiltonian $H$ can be represented by a 3D tensor network, the third dimension being the imaginary time (inverse temperature) $\beta$. Coarse-graining the network along $\beta$ results in an accurate 2D projected entangled-pair operator (PEPO) with a finite bond dimension. The coarse-graining is performed by a tree tensor network of isometries that are optimized variationally to maximize the accuracy of the PEPO. The algorithm is applied to the two-dimensional Hubbard model on an infinite square lattice. We introduce an inhomogeneous protocol to drive a weakly disordered quantum spin chain quasi-adiabatically across a quantum phase transition and minimize the residual energy of the final state. The number of spins that simultaneously reach the critical point is controlled by the length scale in which the magnetic field is modulated, introducing an effective size that favors adiabatic dynamics. The dependence of the residual energy on this length scale and the velocity at which the magnetic field sweeps out the chain is shown to be nonmonotonic. We determine the conditions for an optimal suppression of the residual energy of the final state and show that inhomogeneous driving can outperform conventional adiabatic schemes based on homogeneous control fields by several orders of magnitude., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, published version

The truncation or compression of the spectrum of Schmidt values is inherent to the matrix product state (MPS) approximation of one-dimensional quantum ground states. We provide a renormalization group picture by interpreting this compression as an application of Wilson's numerical renormalization group along the imaginary time direction appearing in the path integral representation of the state. The location of the physical index is considered as an impurity in the transfer matrix and static MPS correlation functions are reinterpreted as dynamical impurity correlations. Coarse-graining the transfer matrix is performed using a hybrid variational ansatz based on matrix product operators, combining ideas of MPS and the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz. Through numerical comparison with conventional MPS algorithms, we explicitly verify the impurity interpretation of MPS compression, as put forward by [V. Zauner et al., New J. Phys. 17, 053002 (2015)] for the transverse-field Ising model. Additionally, we motivate the conceptual usefulness of endowing MPS with an internal layered structure by studying restricted variational subspaces to describe elementary excitations on top of the ground state, which serves to elucidate a transparent renormalization group structure ingrained in MPS descriptions of ground states., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, published version

We re-examine the well-studied one dimensional spin-1/2 $XY$ model to reveal its nontrivial energy spectrum, in particular the energy gap between the ground state and the first excited state. In the case of the isotropic $XY$ model -- the $XX$ model -- the gap behaves very irregularly as a function of the system size at a second order transition point. This is in stark contrast to the usual power-law decay of the gap and is reminiscent of the similar behavior at the first order phase transition in the infinite-range quantum $XY$ model. The gap also shows nontrivial oscillatory behavior for the phase transitions in the anisotropic model in the incommensurate phase. We observe a close relation between this anomalous behavior of the gap and the correlation functions. We discuss how to analytically obtain an -- essentially infinite -- Matrix Product State (MPS) representation of the ground state of the XY model. On the one hand this allows to illustrate how the Ornstein-Zernike form of the correlation function emerges in the exact case using standard MPS language. On the other hand we study the consequences of truncating the bond dimension of the exact MPS, which is also part of many tensor network algorithms, and analyze how the truncated MPS transfer matrix is representing the dominant part of the exact quantum transfer matrix. In the gapped phase we observe that the correlation length obtained from a truncated MPS approaches the exact value following a power law in effective bond dimension. In the gapless phase we find a good match between a state obtained numerically from standard MPS techniques with finite bond dimension, and a state obtained by effective finite imaginary time evolution in our framework. This provides a direct hint for a geometric interpretation of Finite Entanglement Scaling at the critical point in this case. Finally, by analyzing the spectra of transfer matrices, we support the interpretation put forward by [V. Zauner at. al., New J. We derive an exact closed-form expression for fidelity susceptibility of even- and odd-sized quantum Ising chains in the transverse field. To this aim, we diagonalize the Ising Hamiltonian and study the gap between its positive and negative parity subspaces. We derive an exact closed-form expression for the gap and use it to identify the parity of the ground state. We point out misunderstanding in some of the former studies of fidelity susceptibility and discuss its consequences. Last but not least, we rigorously analyze the properties of the gap. The dynamics of a quantum phase transition is inextricably woven with the formation of excitations, as a result of the critical slowing down in the neighborhood of the critical point. We design a transitionless quantum driving through a quantum critical point that allows one to access the ground state of the broken-symmetry phase by a finite-rate quench of the control parameter. The method is illustrated in the one-dimensional quantum Ising model in a transverse field. We study an Ising chain undergoing a quantum phase transition in a quantum magnetic field. Such a field can be emulated by coupling the chain to a central spin initially in a superposition state. We show that - by adiabatically driving such a system - one can prepare a quantum superposition of any two ground states of the Ising chain. In particular, one can end up with the Ising chain in a superposition of ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases -- a scenario with no analogue in prior studies of quantum phase transitions. We study ground state fidelity defined as the overlap between two ground states of the same quantum system obtained for slightly different values of the parameters of its Hamiltonian. We focus on the thermodynamic regime of the XY model and the neighborhood of its critical points. We describe in detail cases when fidelity is dominated by the universal contribution reflecting quantum criticality of the phase transition. We show that proximity to the multicritical point leads to anomalous scaling of fidelity. We also discuss fidelity in a regime characterized by pronounced oscillations resulting from the change of either the system size or the parameters of the Hamiltonian. Moreover, we show when fidelity is dominated by non-universal contributions, study fidelity in the extended Ising model, and illustrate how our results provide additional insight into dynamics of quantum phase transitions. Special attention is put to studies of fidelity from the momentum space perspective. All our main results are obtained analytically. We consider an inhomogeneous quantum phase transition across a multicritical point of the XY quantum spin chain. This is an example of a Lifshitz transition with a dynamical exponent z = 2. Just like in the case z = 1 considered in New J. Phys. 12, 055007 (2010) when a critical front propagates much faster than the maximal group velocity of quasiparticles vq, then the transition is effectively homogeneous: density of excitations obeys a generalized Kibble-Zurek mechanism and scales with the sixth root of the transition rate. However, unlike for z = 1, the inhomogeneous transition becomes adiabatic not below vq but a lower threshold velocity v', proportional to inhomogeneity of the transition, where the excitations are suppressed exponentially. Interestingly, the adiabatic threshold v' is nonzero despite vanishing minimal group velocity of low energy quasiparticles. In the adiabatic regime below v' the inhomogeneous transition can be used for efficient adiabatic quantum state preparation in a quantum simulator: the time required for the critical front to sweep across a chain of N spins adiabatically is merely linear in N, while the corresponding time for a homogeneous transition across the multicritical point scales with the sixth power of N. We observe signatures of disorder-induced order in 1D XY spin chains with an external, site-dependent uni-axial random field within the XY plane. We numerically investigate signatures of a quantum phase transition at T=0, in particular an upsurge of the magnetization in the direction orthogonal to the external magnetic field, and the scaling of the block-entropy with the amplitude of this field. Also, we discuss possible realizations of this effect in ultra-cold atom experiments.

We argue that in a second order quantum phase transition driven by an inhomogeneous quench density of quasiparticle excitations is suppressed when velocity at which a critical point propagates across a system falls below a threshold velocity equal to the Kibble-Zurek correlation length times the energy gap at freeze-out divided by $\hbar$. This general prediction is supported by an analytic solution in the quantum Ising chain. We consider a linear quench from the paramagnetic to ferromagnetic phase in the quantum Ising chain interacting with a static spin environment. Both decoherence from the environment and non-adiabaticity of the evolution near a critical point excite the system from the final ferromagnetic ground state. For weak decoherence and relatively fast quenches the excitation energy, proportional to the number of kinks in the final state, decays like an inverse square root of a quench time, but slow transitions or strong decoherence make it decay in a much slower logarithmic way. We also find that fidelity between the final ferromagnetic ground state and a final state after a quench decays exponentially with a size of a chain, with a decay rate proportional to average density of excited kinks, and a proportionality factor evolving from 1.3 for weak decoherence and fast quenches to approximately 1 for slow transitions or strong decoherence. Simultaneously, correlations between kinks randomly distributed along the chain evolve from a near-crystalline anti-bunching to a Poissonian distribution of kinks in a number of isolated Anderson localization centers randomly scattered along the chain., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

We propose a symmetric version of the multi-scale entanglement renormalization Ansatz (MERA) in two spatial dimensions (2D) and use this Ansatz to find an unknown ground state of a 2D quantum system. Quantum Ising model in one dimension is an exactly solvable example of a quantum phase transition. We investigate its behavior during a quench from a paramagnetic to ferromagnetic phase caused by a gradual turning off of the transverse field at a fixed rate characterized by the quench time $\tau_Q$. In agreement with Kibble-Zurek mechanism, quantum state of the system after the transition exhibits a characteristic correlation length $\hat\xi$ proportional to the square root of the quench time $\tau_Q$. The inverse of this correlation length determines average density of defects after the transition. In this paper, we show that $\hat\xi$ also controls the entropy of entanglement of a block of $L$ spins with the rest of the system. For large $L$, this entropy saturates at $\frac16\log_2\hat\xi$, as might have been expected from the Kibble-Zurek mechanism. Close to the critical point, the entropy saturates when the block size $L\approx\hat\xi$, but -- in the subsequent evolution in the ferromagnetic phase -- a somewhat larger length scale $l=\sqrt{\tau_Q}\ln\tau_Q$ develops as a result of quantum dephasing, and the entropy saturates when $L\approx l$. We also study the spin-spin correlation. We find that close to the critical point ferromagnetic correlations decay exponentially with the dynamical correlation length $\hat\xi$, but in the following evolution this correlation function becomes oscillatory at distances less than this scale. However, both the wavelength and the correlation length of these oscillations are still determined by $\hat\xi$.
