Search

Quantum key distribution (QKD) allows secret key exchange between two users with unconditional security. For QKD to be widely deployed, low cost and compactness are crucial requirements alongside high performance. Currently, the majority of QKD systems demonstrated rely on bulk intensity and phase modulators to generate optical pulses with precisely defined amplitude and relative phase difference i.e., to encode information as signal states and decoy states. However, these modulators are expensive and bulky, thereby limiting the compactness of QKD systems. Here, we present and experimentally demonstrate a novel optical transmitter design to overcome this disadvantage by generating intensity- and phase-tunable pulses at GHz clock speeds. Our design removes the need for bulk modulators by employing directly modulated lasers in combination with optical injection locking and coherent interference. This scheme is, therefore, well suited to miniaturization and photonic integration, and we implement a proof-of-principle QKD demonstration to highlight potential applications.

The development and performance of quantum technologies heavily relies on the properties of the quantum states, which often require careful optimization of the driving conditions of all underlying components. In quantum key distribution (QKD), optical injection locking (OIL) of pulsed lasers has recently been shown as a promising technique to realize high-speed quantum transmitters with efficient system design. However, due to the complex underlying laser dynamics, tuning such laser system is both a challenging and time-consuming task. Here, we experimentally demonstrate an OIL-based QKD transmitter that can be automatically tuned to its optimum operating state by employing a genetic algorithm. Starting with minimal knowledge of the laser operating parameters, the phase coherence and the quantum bit error rate of the system are optimized autonomously to a level matching the state of the art.

In this work, we report on an $ab-initio$ computational study of the electronic and magnetic properties of transition metal adatoms on a monolayer of NbSe$_2$. We demonstrate that Cr, Mn, Fe and Co prefer all to sit above the Nb atom, where the $d$ states experience a substantial hybridization. The inter-atomic exchange coupling is shown to have an oscillatory nature accompanied by an exponential decay, in accordance with what theory predicts for a damped Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction. Our results indicate that the qualitative features of the magnetic coupling for the four investigated adatoms can be connected to the fine details of their Fermi surface. In particular, the oscillations of the exchange in Fe and Co are found to be related to a single nesting vector, connecting large electrons and hole pockets. Most interestingly, this behavior is found to be unaffected by changes induced on the height of the impurity, which makes the magnetism robust to external perturbations. Considering that NbSe$_2$ is a superconductor down to a single layer, our research might open the path for further research into the interplay between magnetic and superconducting characteristics, which could lead to novel superconductivity engineering.

In this article we employ density functional theory in the generalized gradient approximation to investigate the structural and electronic properties of the solid solution alloy $\text{Zn}\text{Se}_x\text{S}_{1-x}$ in the wurtzite structure. We analyzed the character of the bond lengths and angles at the atomic scale, using a supercell approach that does not impose any constraint on the crystal potential. We show that the bond lengths of pristine ZnS and ZnSe compounds are almost preserved between nearest neighbors, which is different from what would be anticipated if Vegard's law were valid at the atomic level. We also show that bond lengths start behaving in accordance to Vegard's law from the third shell of nearest neighbors onward, which in turn determines the average lattice parameters of the alloys determined by diffraction experiments. Fundamental building blocks around the anions are identified and are shown to be non-rigid but still volume preserving. Finally, the geometrical analysis is connected to the trend exhibited by the electronic structure, and in particular by the band gap. The latter is found to exhibit a small deviation from the linearity with respect to the Se concentration, in accordance to available experimental data. By assuming a quadratic dependence, we can extract a bowing parameter and analyze various contributions to it with various calculations under selected constraints. The structural deformation in response to the doping process is shown to be the driving force behind the deviation from linearity. The difference in stiffness between ZnS and ZnSe is showed to play a key role in the asymmetric behavior of the bowing parameter observed in the S-rich and Se-rich regions.

Conducting and magnetic properties of a material often change in some confined geometries. However, a situation where a non-magnetic semiconductor becomes both metallic and magnetic at the surface is quite rare, and to the best of our knowledge has never been observed in experiment. In this work, we employ first-principles electronic structure theory to predict that such a peculiar magnetic state emerges in a family of quaternary Heusler compounds. We investigate magnetic and electronic properties of CoCrTiP, FeMnTiP and CoMnVAl. For the latter material, we also analyse the magnetic exchange interactions and use them for parametrizing an effective spin Hamiltonian. We compute the phonon dispersion, density of states, and the Gr\"uneisen parameters of bulk palladium in the combined density functional theory (DFT) and dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). We find good agreement with experimental results for ground state properties (equilibrium lattice parameter and bulk modulus) and the experimentally measured phonon spectra. We demonstrate that at temperatures $T \lesssim 20~K$ the phonon frequency in the vicinity of the Kohn anomaly, $\omega_{T1}({\bf q}_{K})$, strongly decreases. This is in contrast to DFT where this frequency remains essentially constant in the whole temperature range. Apparently correlation effects reduce the restoring force of the ionic displacements at low temperatures, leading to a mode softening., Comment: minor revisions

The detailed nature of electronic states mediating ferromagnetic coupling in dilute magnetic semiconductors, specifically (Ga,Mn)As, has been an issue of long debate. Two confronting models have been discussed emphasizing host band vs. impurity band carriers. Using angle resolved photoemission we are for the first time able to identify a highly dispersive Mn-induced energy band in (Ga,Mn)As. Our results show that the electronic structure of the (Ga,Mn)As system is significantly modified from that of GaAs throughout the valence band. Close to the Fermi energy, the presence of Mn induces a strong mixing of the bulk bands of GaAs, which results in the appearance of a highly dispersive band in the gap region of GaAs. For Mn concentrations above 1% the band reaches the Fermi level, and can thus host the delocalized holes needed for ferromagnetic coupling. Overall, our data provide a firm evidence of delocalized carriers belonging to the modified host valence band.

The lattice constant, bulk modulus and shear constant of TbN are calculated by means of density functional theory (DFT) in the local density approximation (LDA) and generalized gradient approximation (GGA), with 4f-states treated as valence electrons or core electrons. In addition, local Coulomb repulsions U are treated both statically as in the LDA+U approach and dynamically as in the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) in the Hubbard-I approximation. It is shown that all methods, except DFT-LDA with 4f electrons treated as either valence states, produce lattice constants and bulk moduli in good agreement with experiment. In the LDA+U approach multiple minima are found, and we focus on the competition between a state with cubic symmetry and a state obtained from atomic Hund's rules. We find the state with cubic symmetry to be 0.59 eV lower in energy than the Hund's rules state, while the opposite was obtained in previous literature. The shear constant is shown to be rather sensitive to the theoretical method used, and the Hund's rules state obtained in LDA+U is found to be unstable towards tetragonal shear. As to the magnetism, we find that the calculation based on the Hubbard-I approximation reproduces observations with the best accuracy. Finally, the spectral properties of TbN are discussed, together with the general applicability of the different methods in describing rare-earth elements and compounds.

The rare-earths are known to have intriguing changes of the valence, depending on chemical surrounding or geometry. Here we make predictions from theory that combines density functional theory with atomic multiplet-theory, on the transition of valence when transferring from the atomic divalent limit to the trivalent bulk, passing through different sized clusters, of selected rare-earths. We predict that Tm clusters show an abrupt change from pure divalent to pure trivalent at a size of 6 atoms, while Sm and Tb clusters are respectively pure divalent and trivalent up to 8 atoms. Larger Sm clusters are argued to likely make a transition to a mixed valent, or trivalent, configuration. The valence of all rare-earth clusters, as a function of size, is predicted from interpolation of our calculated results. We argue that the here predicted behavior is best analyzed by spectroscopic measurements, and provide theoretical spectra, based on dynamical mean field theory, in the Hubbard-I approximation, to ease experimental analysis.

Including on-site electronic interactions described by the multi-orbital Hubbard model we study the correlation effects in the electronic structure of bulk palladium. We use a combined density functional and dynamical mean field theory, LDA+DMFT, based on the fluctuation exchange approximation. The agreement between the experimentally determined and the theoretical lattice constant and bulk modulus is improved when correlation effects are included. It is found that correlations modify the Fermi surface around the neck at the $L$-point while the Fermi surface tube structures show little correlation effects. At the same time we discuss the possibility of satellite formation in the high energy binding region. Spectral functions obtained within the LDA+DMFT and $GW$ methods are compared to discuss non-local correlation effects. For relatively weak interaction strength of the local Coulomb and exchange parameters spectra from LDA+DMFT shows no major difference in comparison to $GW$.

We have revisited the valence band electronic structure of NiO by means of hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES) together with theoretical calculations using both the GW method and the local density approximation + dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT) approaches. The effective impurity problem in DMFT is solved through the exact diagonalization (ED) method. We show that the LDA+DMFT method alone cannot explain all the observed structures in the HAXPES spectra. GW corrections are required for the O bands and Ni-s and p derived states to properly position their binding energies. Our results establish that a combination of the GW and DMFT methods is necessary for correctly describing the electronic structure of NiO in a proper ab-initio framework. We also demonstrate that the inclusion of photoionization cross section is crucial to interpret the HAXPES spectra of NiO.We argue that our conclusions are general and that the here suggested approach is appropriate for any complex transition metal oxide., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures

In this work we examine critically the electronic structure of the rare-earth elements by use of the so-called Hubbard I approximation. From the theoretical side all measured features of both occupied and unoccupied states are reproduced, without significant deviations between observations and theory. We also examine cohesive properties like the equilibrium volume and bulk modulus, where we find, in general, a good agreement between theory and measurements. In addition we have reproduced the spin and orbital moments of these elements, as they are reflected from measurements of the saturation moment. We have also employed the Hubbard I approximation to extract the interatomic exchange parameters of an effective spin Hamiltonian for the heavy rare earths. We show that the Hubbard I approximation gives results which are consistent with calculations where $4f$ electrons are treated as core states for Gd. The latter approach was also used to address the series of the heavy/late rare-earths. Via Monte Carlo simulations we obtained ordering temperatures which reproduce measurements within about $20\%$. We have further illustrated the accuracy of these exchange parameters by comparing measured and calculated magnetic configurations for the heavy rare earths and the magnon dispersion for Gd. The Hubbard I approximation is compared to other theories of the electronic structure, and we argue that it is superior. We discuss the relevance of our results in general, and how this makes it possible to treat the electronic structure of materials containing rare-earth elements, such as permanent magnets, magnetostrictive compounds, photovoltaics, optical fibers, topological insulators, and molecular magnets., Comment: 21 pages, 14 figures, 2 tables, 4 appendices

The electronic structure and magnetic properties of a single Fe adatom on a CuN surface have been studied using density functional theory in the local spin density approximation (LSDA), the LSDA+U approach and the local density approximation plus dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT). The impurity problem in LDA+DMFT is solved through exact diagonalization and in the Hubbard-I approximation. The comparison of the one-particle spectral functions obtained from LSDA, LSDA+U and LDA+DMFT show the importance of dynamical correlations for the electronic structure of this system. Most importantly, we focused on the magnetic anisotropy and found that neither LSDA, nor LSDA+U can explain the measured, high values of the axial and transverse anisotropy parameters. Instead, the spin excitation energies obtained from our LDA+DMFT approach with exact diagonalization agree significantly better with experimental data. This affirms the importance of treating fluctuating magnetic moments through a realistic many-body treatment when describing this class of nano-magnetic systems. The ill-posed analytic continuation problem for Green's functions and self-energies is investigated by revisiting the Pad\'{e} approximants technique. We propose to remedy the well-known problems of the Pad\'{e} approximants by performing an average of several continuations, obtained by varying the number of fitted input points and Pad\'{e} coefficients independently. The suggested approach is then applied to several test cases, including Sm and Pr atomic self-energies, the Green's functions of the Hubbard model for a Bethe lattice and of the Haldane model for a nano-ribbon, as well as two special test functions. The sensitivity to numerical noise and the dependence on the precision of the numerical libraries are analysed in detail. The present approach is compared to a number of other techniques, i.e. the non-negative least-square method, the non-negative Tikhonov method and the maximum entropy method, and is shown to perform well for the chosen test cases. This conclusion holds even when the noise on the input data is increased to reach values typical for quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The ability of the algorithm to resolve fine structures is finally illustrated for two relevant test functions., Comment: 10 figures

By means of first principles calculations we investigate the nature of exchange coupling in ferromagnetic bcc Fe on a microscopic level. Analyzing the basic electronic structure reveals a drastic difference between the $3d$ orbitals of $E_g$ and $T_{2g}$ symmetries. The latter ones define the shape of the Fermi surface, while the former ones form weakly-interacting impurity levels. We demonstrate that, as a result of this, in Fe the $T_{2g}$ orbitals participate in exchange interactions, which are only weakly dependent on the configuration of the spin moments and thus can be classified as Heisenberg-like. These couplings are shown to be driven by Fermi surface nesting. In contrast, for the $E_g$ states the Heisenberg picture breaks down, since the corresponding contribution to the exchange interactions is shown to strongly depend on the reference state they are extracted from. Our analysis of the nearest-neighbour coupling indicates that the interactions among $E_g$ states are mainly proportional to the corresponding hopping integral and thus can be attributed to be of double-exchange origin., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Recent experiments showed that Co undergoes a phase transition from ferromagnetic hcp phase to non-magnetic fcc one around 100 GPa. Since the transition is of first order, a certain region of co-existence of the two phases is present. By means of \textit{ab initio} calculations, we found that the hcp phase itself undergoes a series of electronic topological transitions (ETTs), which affects both elastic and magnetic properties of the material. Most importantly, we propose that the sequence of ETTs lead to the stabilisation of a non-collinear spin arrangement in highly compressed hcp Co. We present the results of an ab initio study of magnetic properties of Fe, Co and Ni surfaces. In particular, we discuss their electronic structure and magnetic exchange interactions (Jij), as obtained by means of a combination of density functional theory and dynamical mean-field theory. All studied systems have a pronounced tendency to ferromagnetism both for bulk and surface atoms. The presence of narrow-band surface states is shown to enhance the magnetic moment as well as the exchange couplings. The most interesting results were obtained for the Fe surface where the atoms have a tendency to couple antiferromagnetically with each other. This interaction is relatively small, when compared to interlayer ferromagnetic interaction, and strongly depends on the lattice parameter. Local correlation effects are shown to lead to strong changes of the overall shape of the spectral functions. However, they seem to not play a decisive role on the overall picture of the magnetic couplings studied here. We have also investigated the influence of correlations on the spin and orbital moments of the bulk-like and surface atoms. In this paper we present an accurate numerical scheme for extracting inter-atomic exchange parameters ($J_{ij}$) of strongly correlated systems, based on first-principles full-potential electronic structure theory. The electronic structure is modelled with the help of a full-potential linear muffin-tin orbital method. The effects of strong electron correlations are considered within the charge self-consistent density functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT). The exchange parameters are then extracted using the magnetic force theorem, hence all the calculations are performed within a single computational framework. The method allows to investigate how the $J_{ij}$-parameters are affected by dynamical electron correlations. In addition to describing the formalism and details of the implementation, we also present magnetic properties of a few commonly discussed systems, characterised by different degrees of electron localisation. In bcc Fe we found a minor renormalisation of the $J_{ij}$ interactions once the dynamical correlations are introduced. However, generally, if the magnetic coupling has several competing contributions from different orbitals, the redistribution of the spectral weight and changes in the exchange splitting of these states can lead to a dramatic modification of the total interaction parameter. In NiO we found that both static and dynamical mean-field results provide an adequate description of the exchange interactions, which is somewhat surprising given the fact that these two methods result in quite different electronic structures. By employing Hubbard-I approximation for the treatment of the $4f$ states in hcp Gd we reproduce the experimentally observed multiplet structure. The calculated exchange parameters result to be rather close to the ones obtained by treating the $4f$ electrons as non-interacting core states.

The results of the electronic structure calculations performed on SmN by using the LDA+U method with and without including the spin-orbit coupling are presented. Within the LDA+U approach, a N(2$p$) band polarization of $\simeq 0.3\ \mu_B$ is induced by Sm(4$f$)-N(2$p$) hybridization, and a half-metallic ground state is obtained. By including spin-orbit coupling the magnetic structure was shown to be antiferromagnetic of type II, with Sm spin and orbital moments nearly cancelling. We provide a model for the prediction of the electronic and magnetic configurations of ferromagnetic Fe after an ultrafast decrease or increase of magnetization. The model is based on the well-grounded assumption that, after the ultrafast magnetization change, the system achieves a partial thermal equilibrium. With statistical arguments it is possible to show that the magnetic configurations are qualitatively different in the case of reduced or increased magnetization. The predicted magnetic configurations are then used to compute the dielectric response at the 3p (M) absorption edge, which can be related to the changes observed in the experimental T-MOKE data. The good qualitative agreement between theory and experiment offers a substantial support to the existence of an ultrafast increase of magnetisation, which has been fiercely debated in the last years., Comment: Main text 10 pages including 7 figures. The total and magnetically resolved Compton profiles are analyzed within the combined density functional and dynamical mean field theory for the transition metal elements Fe and Ni. A rather good agreement between the measured and computed magnetic Compton profiles (MCPs) of Fe and Ni is obtained with the standard Local Spin Density Approximation (LSDA). By including local but dynamic many-body correlations captured by Dynamical Mean Field Theory (DMFT), the calculated magnetic Compton profile is further improved when compared with experiment. We report high-resolution hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy results on (Ga,Mn)As films as a function of Mn doping. Supported by theoretical calculations we identify, over the entire 1% to 13% Mn doping range, the electronic character of the states near the top of the valence band. Magnetization and temperature dependent core-level photoemission spectra reveal how the delocalized character of the Mn states enables the bulk ferromagnetic properties of (Ga,Mn)As., Comment: prl submitted

After two decades from the discovery of ferromagnetism in Mn-doped GaAs, its origin is still debated, and many doubts are related to the electronic structure. Here we report an experimental and theoretical study of the valence electron spectrum of Mn-doped GaAs. The experimental data are obtained through the differences between off- and on-resonance photo-emission data. The theoretical spectrum is calculated by means of a combination of density-functional theory in the local density approximation and dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT), using exact diagonalisation as impurity solver. Theory is found to accurately reproduce measured data, and illustrates the importance of correlation effects. Our results demonstrate that the Mn states extend over a broad range of energy, including the top of the valence band, and that no impurity band splits off from the valence band edge, while the induced holes seem located primarily around the Mn impurity., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Full charge self-consistence (CSC) over the electron density has been implemented into the local density approximation plus dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT) scheme based on a full-potential linear muffin-tin orbital method (FP-LMTO). Computational details on the construction of the electron density from the density matrix are provided. The method is tested on the prototypical charge-transfer insulator NiO using a simple static Hartree-Fock approximation as impurity solver. The spectral and ground state properties of bcc Fe are then addressed, by means of the spin-polarized T-matrix fluctuation exchange solver (SPTF). Finally the permanent magnet SmCo$_5$ is studied using multiple impurity solvers, SPTF and Hubbard I, as the strength of the local Coulomb interaction on the Sm and Co sites are drastically different. The developed CSC-DMFT method is shown to in general improve on materials properties like magnetic moments, electronic structure and the materials density., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

We report on a quantitative investigation of the spin-dependent quasiparticle lifetimes and electron correlation effects in ferromagnetic hcp Co(0001) by means of spin and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The experimental spectra are compared in detail to state-of-the-art many-body calculations within the dynamical mean field theory and the three-body scattering approximation, including a full calculation of the one-step photoemission process. From this comparison we conclude that although strong local many-body Coulomb interactions are of major importance for the qualitative description of correlation effects in Co, more sophisticated many-body calculations are needed in order to improve the quantitative agreement between theory and experiment, in particular concerning the linewidths. The quality of the overall agreement obtained for Co indicates that the effect of non-local correlations becomes weaker with increasing atomic number.

The strength of electronic correlation effects in the spin-dependent electronic structure of ferromagnetic bcc Fe(110) has been investigated by means of spin and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The experimental results are compared to theoretical calculations within the three-body scattering approximation and within the dynamical mean-field theory, together with one-step model calculations of the photoemission process. This comparison indicates that the present state of the art many-body calculations, although improving the description of correlation effects in Fe, give too small mass renormalizations and scattering rates thus demanding more refined many-body theories including non-local fluctuations., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We investigate the role of magnetic fluctuations in the spectral properties of paramagnetic gamma-Mn. Two methods are employed. The Local Density Approximation plus Dynamical Mean-Field Theory together with the numerically exact quantum Monte-Carlo solver is used as a reference for the spectral properties. Then the same scheme is used with the computationally less demanding perturbative spin-polarized fluctuation-exchange solver in combination with the Disordered Local Moment approach, and photoemission spectra are calculated within the one-step model. It is shown that the formation of local magnetic moments in gamma-Mn is very sensitive to the value of Hund's exchange parameter. Comparison with the experimental photoemission spectra demonstrates that gamma-Mn is a strongly correlated system, with the Hubbard band formation, which cannot be described by the perturbative approach. However, minor change of parameters would transform it into a weakly correlated system., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We present an accurate implementation of total energy calculations into the local density approximation plus dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT) method. The electronic structure problem is solved through the full potential linear Muffin-Tin Orbital (FP-LMTO) and Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (FP-KKR) methods with a perturbative solver for the effective impurity suitable for moderately correlated systems. We have tested the method in detail for the case of Ni and investigated the sensitivity of the results to the computational scheme and to the complete self-consistency. It is demonstrated that the LDA+DMFT method can resolve a long-standing controversy between the LDA/GGA density functional approach and experiment for equilibrium lattice constant and bulk modulus of Mn., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures
