As large language models (LLMs) become increasingly integrated into educational technology, their potential to assist in developing curricula has gained interest among educators. Despite this growing attention, their applicability in culturally responsive Indigenous educational settings like Hawai`i's public schools and Kaiapuni (immersion language) programs, remains understudied. Additionally, `Olelo Hawai`i, the Hawaiian language, as a low-resource language, poses unique challenges and concerns about cultural sensitivity and the reliability of generated content. Through surveys and interviews with kumu (educators), this study explores the perceived benefits and limitations of using LLMs for culturally revitalizing computer science (CS) education in Hawaiian public schools with Kaiapuni programs. Our findings highlight AI's time-saving advantages while exposing challenges such as cultural misalignment and reliability concerns. We conclude with design recommendations for future AI tools to better align with Hawaiian cultural values and pedagogical practices, towards the broader goal of trustworthy, effective, and culturally grounded AI technologies.

We consider time dynamics of entanglement entropy between a filled fermionic system and an empty reservoir. We consider scenarios (i) where the system is subjected to a dephasing mechanism and the reservoir is clean, thereby emulating expansion of effectively interacting fermions in vacuum, and (ii) where both the system and the reservoir are subjected to dephasing and thereby enabling us to address how the entanglement between the part of the effectively interacting system and its complement evolves in time. We consider two different kinds of quantum trajectory approaches, namely stochastic unitary unraveling and quantum state diffusion. For both protocols, we observe and characterize the full Page curve-like dynamics for the entanglement entropy. Depending on the protocol and the setup, we observe very distinct characteristics of the Page curve and the associated Page time and Page value. We also compute the number of fermions leaking to the reservoir and the associated current and shed light on their plausible connections with entanglement entropy. We tackle the study of a type of local asymptotics, known as Mehler--Heine asymptotics, for some $q$--hypergeometric polynomials. Some consequences about the asymptotic behavior of the zeros of these polynomials are discussed. We illustrate the results with numerical examples.

With the rising threat of ballistic impacts, it is critical to devise a solution that is both efficient and economical. Recently, Polymer Matrix Sand Composites (PMSCs) have emerged as a viable cost-effective option. This ongoing research focuses on providing stronger protection against diverse ballistic impacts. The study examines the enhancement of ballistic resistance in PMSCs through the graded incorporation of sand. Variable properties are achieved along the thickness by altering the sand particle size and weight fraction in the polymer matrix. The gradation creates a stepwise structure, starting with a dense base impact zone containing abrasive sand particles with a typical size range. This layer is brittle and hard, effectively eroding incoming projectiles. Subsequent layers are less dense, offering tensile strength that reflects stress waves and reduces impact energy while supporting the frontal brittle zone. The minimally dense or neat matrix regions prevent backlash and provide a cushioning effect. The addition of sand particles increases the composite's surface area, enhancing adhesion between inclusions and the matrix. This improved adhesion ensures efficient load transfer, increasing overall hardness. PMSCs were fabricated to analyze the effects of two matrix compositions, and refining manufacturing methods. These composites were subjected to tensile testing, Izod impact testing, Shore-D hardness testing, and other evaluations to assess their mechanical properties. The findings show that varying the sand content significantly impacts mechanical properties up to an optimal weight fraction for a given size range of inclusions. Experimental and simulation studies were employed to extract properties and evaluate material behavior under ballistic threats. The research underscores the potential of PMSCs as affordable and sustainable composites for advanced ballistic protection.

The intercalation of molecular species between the layers of van der Waals (vdW) materials has recently emerged as a powerful approach to combine the remarkable electronic and magnetic properties of vdW materials with the chemical flexibility of organic molecules. However, the full transformative potential of molecular intercalation remains underexplored, largely due to the lack of simple, broadly applicable methods that preserve high crystalline quality down to the few-layer limit. Here, we introduce a simple galvanic approach to intercalate different molecules into various vdW materials under ambient conditions, leveraging the low reduction potential of selected metals to enable a spontaneous molecular insertion. We employ our method, which is particularly well-suited for the in-situ intercalation of few-layer-thick crystals, to intercalate nine vdW materials, including magnets and superconductors, with molecules ranging from conventional alkylammonium ions to metallorganic and bio-inspired chiral cations. Notably, intercalation leads to a molecule-dependent enhancement of the superconducting transition in 2H-TaS2, reaching a critical temperature of 4.7 K, higher than TaS2 monolayers. Additionally, RuCl3 exhibits an unprecedented transition from antiferromagnetic to ferrimagnetic ordering upon intercalation with cobaltocenium. These results establish our approach as a versatile technique for engineering atomically thin quantum materials and heterostructures, unlocking the transformative effects of molecular intercalation.

In this work, we develop a fast and accurate method for the scattering of flexural-gravity waves by a thin plate of varying thickness overlying a fluid of infinite depth. This problem commonly arises in the study of sea ice and ice shelves, which can have complicated heterogeneities that include ridges and rolls. With certain natural assumptions on the thickness, we present an integral equation formulation for solving this class of problems and analyze its mathematical properties. The integral equation is then discretized and solved using a high-order-accurate, FFT-accelerated algorithm. The speed, accuracy, and scalability of this approach are demonstrated through a variety of illustrative examples.

We study how spatiotemporal chaos in dynamical systems can be controlled by stochastically returning them to their initial conditions. Focusing on discrete nonlinear maps, we analyze how key measures of chaos -- the Lyapunov exponent and butterfly velocity, which quantify sensitivity to initial perturbations and the ballistic spread of information, respectively -- are reduced by stochastic resetting. We identify a critical resetting rate that induces a dynamical phase transition, characterized by the simultaneous vanishing of the Lyapunov exponent and butterfly velocity, effectively arresting the spread of information. These theoretical predictions are validated and illustrated with numerical simulations of the celebrated logistic map and its lattice extension. Fundamental research on two-dimensional (2D) magnetic systems based on van der Waals materials has been gaining traction rapidly since their recent discovery. With the increase of recent knowledge, it has become clear that such materials have also a strong potential for applications in devices that combine magnetism with electronics, optics, and nanomechanics. Nonetheless, many challenges still lay ahead. Several fundamental aspects of 2D magnetic materials are still unknown or poorly understood, such as their often-complicated electronic structure, optical properties, and magnetization dynamics, and their magnon spectrum. To elucidate their properties and facilitate integration in devices, advanced characterization techniques and theoretical frameworks need to be developed or adapted. Moreover, developing synthesis methods which increase critical temperatures and achieve large-scale, high-quality homogeneous thin films is crucial before these materials can be used for real-world applications. Therefore, the field of 2D magnetic materials provides many challenges and opportunities for the discovery and exploration of new phenomena, as well as the development of new applications. This Roadmap presents the background, challenges, and potential research directions for various relevant topics in the field on the fundamentals, synthesis, characterization, and applications. We hope that this work can provide a strong starting point for young researchers in the field and provide a general overview of the key challenges for more experienced researchers., Comment: 87 pages, 24 figures. The o1 model series is trained with large-scale reinforcement learning to reason using chain of thought. These advanced reasoning capabilities provide new avenues for improving the safety and robustness of our models. In particular, our models can reason about our safety policies in context when responding to potentially unsafe prompts, through deliberative alignment. This leads to state-of-the-art performance on certain benchmarks for risks such as generating illicit advice, choosing stereotyped responses, and succumbing to known jailbreaks. Training models to incorporate a chain of thought before answering has the potential to unlock substantial benefits, while also increasing potential risks that stem from heightened intelligence. Our results underscore the need for building robust alignment methods, extensively stress-testing their efficacy, and maintaining meticulous risk management protocols. This report outlines the safety work carried out for the OpenAI o1 and OpenAI o1-mini models, including safety evaluations, external red teaming, and Preparedness Framework evaluations.

Previous research on LLM vulnerabilities often relied on nonsensical adversarial prompts, which were easily detectable by automated methods. We address this gap by focusing on human-readable adversarial prompts, a more realistic and potent threat. Our key contributions are situation-driven attacks leveraging movie scripts to create contextually relevant, human-readable prompts that successfully deceive LLMs, adversarial suffix conversion to transform nonsensical adversarial suffixes into meaningful text, and AdvPrompter with p-nucleus sampling, a method to generate diverse, human-readable adversarial suffixes, improving attack efficacy in models like GPT-3.5 and Gemma 7B. Our findings demonstrate that LLMs can be tricked by sophisticated adversaries into producing harmful responses with human-readable adversarial prompts and that there exists a scope for improvement when it comes to robust LLMs.

As large-scale language models increasingly impact safety-critical domains, ensuring their reliable adherence to well-defined principles remains a fundamental challenge. We introduce Deliberative Alignment, a new paradigm that directly teaches the model safety specifications and trains it to explicitly recall and accurately reason over the specifications before answering. We used this approach to align OpenAI's o-series models, and achieved highly precise adherence to OpenAI's safety policies, without requiring human-written chain-of-thoughts or answers. Deliberative Alignment pushes the Pareto frontier by simultaneously increasing robustness to jailbreaks while decreasing overrefusal rates, and also improves out-of-distribution generalization. We demonstrate that reasoning over explicitly specified policies enables more scalable, trustworthy, and interpretable alignment., Comment: 24 pages

Malware authors often employ code obfuscations to make their malware harder to detect. Existing tools for generating obfuscated code often require access to the original source code (e.g., C++ or Java), and adding new obfuscations is a non-trivial, labor-intensive process. In this study, we ask the following question: Can Large Language Models (LLMs) potentially generate a new obfuscated assembly code? If so, this poses a risk to anti-virus engines and potentially increases the flexibility of attackers to create new obfuscation patterns. We answer this in the affirmative by developing the MetamorphASM benchmark comprising MetamorphASM Dataset (MAD) along with three code obfuscation techniques: dead code, register substitution, and control flow change. The MetamorphASM systematically evaluates the ability of LLMs to generate and analyze obfuscated code using MAD, which contains 328,200 obfuscated assembly code samples. We release this dataset and analyze the success rate of various LLMs (e.g., GPT-3.5/4, GPT-4o-mini, Starcoder, CodeGemma, CodeLlama, CodeT5, and LLaMA 3.1) in generating obfuscated assembly code. Neural-network quantum states (NQS) offer a versatile and expressive alternative to traditional variational ans\"atze for simulating physical systems. Energy-based frameworks, like Hopfield networks and Restricted Boltzmann Machines, leverage statistical physics to map quantum states onto an energy landscape, functioning as memory descriptors. Here, we show that such models can be efficiently trained using Monte Carlo techniques enhanced by quantum devices. Our algorithm scales linearly with circuit width and depth, requires constant measurements, avoids mid-circuit measurements, and is polynomial in storage, ensuring optimal efficiency. It applies to both phase and amplitude fields, significantly expanding the trial space compared to prior methods. Quantum-assisted sampling accelerates Markov Chain convergence and improves sample fidelity, offering advantages over classical approaches. We validate our method by accurately learning ground states of local spin models and non-local electronic structure Hamiltonians, even in distorted molecular geometries with strong multi-reference correlations. Benchmark comparisons show robust agreement with traditional methods. This work highlights the potential of combining machine learning protocols with near-term quantum devices for quantum state learning, with promising applications in theoretical chemistry and condensed matter physics.

As the use of text-to-image generative models increases, so does the adoption of automatic benchmarking methods used in their evaluation. However, while metrics and datasets abound, there are few unified benchmarking libraries that provide a framework for performing evaluations across many datasets and metrics. Furthermore, the rapid introduction of increasingly robust benchmarking methods requires that evaluation libraries remain flexible to new datasets and metrics. Finally, there remains a gap in synthesizing evaluations in order to deliver actionable takeaways about model performance. To enable unified, flexible, and actionable evaluations, we introduce EvalGIM (pronounced ''EvalGym''), a library for evaluating generative image models. EvalGIM contains broad support for datasets and metrics used to measure quality, diversity, and consistency of text-to-image generative models. In addition, EvalGIM is designed with flexibility for user customization as a top priority and contains a structure that allows plug-and-play additions of new datasets and metrics. To enable actionable evaluation insights, we introduce ''Evaluation Exercises'' that highlight takeaways for specific evaluation questions. The Evaluation Exercises contain easy-to-use and reproducible implementations of two state-of-the-art evaluation methods of text-to-image generative models: consistency-diversity-realism Pareto Fronts and disaggregated measurements of performance disparities across groups. EvalGIM also contains Evaluation Exercises that introduce two new analysis methods for text-to-image generative models: robustness analyses of model rankings and balanced evaluations across different prompt styles. In this work, we develop two methods to obtain a factorisation as a product of bidiagonal matrices for the Hessenberg recurrence matrix of a system of multiple orthogonal polynomials. One method is based on the Gauss-Borel factorisation of the moment matrix of the system and of its Darboux transformations, and the other uses the connection of multiple orthogonal polynomials with production matrices and branched continued fractions. In this article, we establish that any symmetric $m$-tensor field can be recovered pointwise from partial data of the $k$-th weighted divergent ray transform for any $k \in \mathbb{Z}^{+} \cup\{0\}$. Using the unique continuation property of the fractional Laplacian, we further prove the unique continuation of the fractional divergent beam ray transform for both vector fields and symmetric 2-tensor fields. Additionally, we derive explicit reconstruction formulas and stability results for vector fields and symmetric 2-tensor fields in terms of fractional divergent beam ray transform data. The flavor-changing neutral current decays of heavy bottom quark, alongside the flavor-changing charged current processes mediated by $b \to (c, u)$ in semileptonic $B$ decays are emerged as powerful tools for exploring physics beyond the Standard Model. In this work, we focus on the feasibility of interpreting the processes mediated by $b \to c \tau \nu$ transitions, in particular, the semileptonic $b$-baryonic decay modes $\Sigma_b \to \Sigma_c^{(*)} \tau^-\bar{\nu}_\tau$ and $\Xi_b \to \Xi_c \tau^-\bar{\nu}_\tau$ in the context of SMEFT approach. We tackle the regularisation of a differential system related to generalised Krawtchouk polynomials. We show a straightforward connection between certain auxiliary quantities involving the recurrence coefficients of these polynomials and Painlev\'e V equation via iterative regularisation. Furthermore, we explore how iterative regularisation yields polynomial systems and enables us to find decompositions of certain birational transformations.

General Geronimus transformations, defined by regular matrix polynomials that are neither required to be monic nor restricted by the rank of their leading coefficients, are applied through both right and left multiplication to a rectangular matrix of measures associated with mixed multiple orthogonal polynomials. These transformations produce Christoffel-type formulas that establish relationships between the perturbed and original polynomials. Moreover, it is proven that the existence of Geronimus-perturbed orthogonality is equivalent to the non-cancellation of certain $\tau$-determinants. The effect of these transformations on the Markov-Stieltjes matrix functions is also determined. Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown to be a great success in a wide range of applications ranging from regular NLP-based use cases to AI agents. LLMs have been trained on a vast corpus of texts from various sources; despite the best efforts during the data pre-processing stage while training the LLMs, they may pick some undesirable information such as personally identifiable information (PII). Consequently, in recent times research in the area of Machine Unlearning (MUL) has become active, the main idea is to force LLMs to forget (unlearn) certain information (e.g., PII) without suffering from performance loss on regular tasks. In this work, we examine the robustness of the existing MUL techniques for their ability to enable leakage-proof forgetting in LLMs. In particular, we examine the effect of data transformation on forgetting, i.e., is an unlearned LLM able to recall forgotten information if there is a change in the format of the input? Spintronics is concerned with replacing charge current with current of spin, the electron's intrinsic angular momentum. In magnetic insulators, spin currents are carried by magnons, the quanta of spin-wave excitations on top of the magnetically ordered state. Magnon spin currents are especially promising for information technology due to their low intrinsic damping, non-reciprocal transport, micrometer wavelengths at microwave frequencies, and strong interactions that enable signal transduction. In this perspective, we give our view on the progress and challenges towards realizing magnon spintronics based on atomically thin Van der Waals magnets, a recently discovered class of magnetic materials of which the tunability and versatility has attracted a great deal of ongoing research., Comment: 10 pages

We study a class of random matrices arising from the Lax matrix structure of classical integrable systems, particularly the Calogero family of models. Our focus is the density of eigenvalues for these random matrices. The problem can be mapped to analyzing the density of eigenvalues for generalized versions of conventional random matrix ensembles, including a modified form of the log-gas. The mapping comes from the underlying integrable structure of these models. Such deep connection is confirmed by extensive Monte-Carlo simulations. Thereby we move forward not only in terms of understanding such class of random matrices arising from integrable many-body systems, but also by providing a building block for the generalized hydrodynamic description of integrable systems., Comment: 24 pages, 6 figures

Mixed orthogonal Laurent polynomials on the unit circle of CMV type are constructed utilizing a matrix of moments and its Gauss--Borel factorization and employing a multiple extension of the CMV ordering. A systematic analysis of the associated multiple orthogonality and biorthogonality relations, and an examination of the degrees of the Laurent polynomials is given. Recurrence relations, expressed in terms of banded matrices, are found. These recurrence relations lay the groundwork for corresponding Christoffel-Darboux kernels and relations, as well as for elucidating the ABC theorem. We present a variation of the Front Tracking (FT) method for modeling solutions to hyperbolic systems in one space dimension, a Modified FT scheme. Instead of using non-entropic shocks, we approximate simple waves by jumps which exactly match the states, while approximating the wave speed. Our construction makes use of compression curve as well. We work with weak* solutions introduced in \cite{}. Consequently, we are able to analyze residuals rather than errors, and obtain cleaner convergence results. Through this paper, we intend to set up a scheme that is capable of handling strong shocks consistently. We develop this scheme primarily to prove (in a future work) existence of large amplitude solutions of the p-system. Therefore, we treat the p-system more carefully and construct a completely self-sufficient scheme, which has a limit as long as the approximate weak* solutions have uniformly bounded variation., Comment: 43 pages

Monitoring public sentiment via social media is potentially helpful during health crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic. However, traditional frequency-based, data-driven neural network-based approaches can miss newly relevant content due to the evolving nature of language in a dynamically evolving environment. Human-curated symbolic knowledge sources, such as lexicons for standard language and slang terms, can potentially elevate social media signals in evolving language. We introduce a neurosymbolic method that integrates neural networks with symbolic knowledge sources, enhancing the detection and interpretation of mental health-related tweets relevant to COVID-19. Our method was evaluated using a corpus of large datasets (approximately 12 billion tweets, 2.5 million subreddit data, and 700k news articles) and multiple knowledge graphs. This method dynamically adapts to evolving language, outperforming purely data-driven models with an F1 score exceeding 92\%. This approach also showed faster adaptation to new data and lower computational demands than fine-tuning pre-trained large language models (LLMs). Managing noisy data is a central challenge in direct data-driven control design. We propose an approach for synthesizing model-reference controllers for linear time-invariant (LTI) systems using noisy state-input data, employing novel noise mitigation techniques. Specifically, we demonstrate that using data-based covariance parameterization of the controller enables bias-correction and instrumental variable techniques within the data-driven optimization, thus reducing measurement noise effects as data volume increases. The number of decision variables remains independent of dataset size, making this method scalable to large datasets. In the months leading up to political elections in the United States, forecasts are widespread and take on multiple forms, including projections of what party will win the popular vote, state ratings, and predictions of vote margins at the state level. It can be challenging to evaluate how accuracy changes in the lead up to Election Day or to put probabilistic forecasts into historical context. Moreover, forecasts differ between analysts, highlighting the many choices in the forecasting process. With this as motivation, here we take a more comprehensive view and begin to unpack some of the choices involved in election forecasting. Building on a prior compartmental model of election dynamics, we present the forecasts of this model across months, years, and types of race. By gathering together monthly forecasts of presidential, senatorial, and gubernatorial races from 2004--2022, we provide a larger-scale perspective and discuss how treating polling data in different ways affects forecast accuracy. Twisting two-dimensional van der Waals magnets allows the formation and control of different spin-textures, as skyrmions or magnetic domains. Beyond the rotation angle, different spin reversal processes can be engineered by increasing the number of magnetic layers forming the twisted van der Waals heterostructure. Here, we consider pristine monolayers and bilayers of the A-type antiferromagnet CrSBr as building blocks. By rotating 90 degrees these units, we fabricate symmetric (monolayer/monolayer and bilayer/bilayer) and asymmetric (monolayer/bilayer) heterostructures. The magneto-transport properties reveal the appearance of magnetic hysteresis, which is highly dependent upon the magnitude and direction of the applied magnetic field and is determined not only by the twist-angle but also by the number of layers forming the stack. This high tunability allows switching between volatile and non-volatile magnetic memory at zero-field and controlling the appearance of abrupt magnetic reversal processes at either negative or positive field values on demand. The phenomenology is rationalized based on the different spin-switching processes occurring in the layers, as supported by micromagnetic simulations. Autonomous agents often face the challenge of interpreting uncertain natural language instructions for planning tasks. Representing these instructions as Linear Temporal Logic (LTL) enables planners to synthesize actionable plans. We introduce CoT-TL, a data-efficient in-context learning framework for translating natural language specifications into LTL representations. CoT-TL addresses the limitations of large language models, which typically rely on extensive fine-tuning data, by extending chain-of-thought reasoning and semantic roles to align with the requirements of formal logic creation. This approach enhances the transparency and rationale behind LTL generation, fostering user trust. CoT-TL achieves state-of-the-art accuracy across three diverse datasets in low-data scenarios, outperforming existing methods without fine-tuning or intermediate translations. To improve reliability and minimize hallucinations, we incorporate model checking to validate the syntax of the generated LTL output. We further demonstrate CoT-TL's effectiveness through ablation studies and evaluations on unseen LTL structures and formulas in a new dataset. This paper demonstrates how to explicitly construct a bidiagonal factorization of the banded recurrence matrix that appears in mixed multiple orthogonality on the step-line in terms of the coeffcients of the mixed multiple orthogonal polynomials. Tungsten peaking is predicted in the core of a WEST plasma with total-f gyrokinetic simulations, including both collisional and turbulent transport. This prediction is validated with a synthetic diagnostic of the bolometry. Although nitrogen impurities are shown to reduce the neoclassical peaking of tungsten on-axis, the overall tungsten peaking increases when nitrogen impurities are present, as they reduce the turbulence screening off-axis. This finding is important for the plasma current ramp-up phase of ITER, where light impurities seeding will be desirable to achieve low temperatures at the plasma-facing components and reduce tungsten sputtering. It provides further argument for applying early ECRH heating to maintain margins on the core power balance. The neoclassical peaking factor is cross-verified between XGC and FACIT. Wave dynamics in disordered open media is an intriguing topic, and has lately attracted a lot of attention in non-Hermitian physics, especially in photonics. In fact, spatial distributions of gain and loss elements are physically possible in the context of integrated photonic waveguide arrays. In particular, in these type of lattices, counter-intuitive quantized jumps along the propagation direction appear in the strong disorder limit (where all eigenstates are localized) and they have also been recently experimentally observed. We systematically study the non-Hermitian quasiperiodic Aubry-Andr\'e-Harper model with on-site gain and loss distribution (NHAAH), with an emphasis on the spectral sensitivity based on pseudospectra analysis. Moreover, diffraction dynamics and the quantized jumps, as well as, the effect of saturable nonlinearity, are investigated in detail. Understanding open quantum systems using information encoded in its complex eigenvalues has been a subject of growing interest. In this paper, we study higher-order gap ratios of the singular values of generic open quantum systems. We show that $k$-th order gap ratio of the singular values of an open quantum system can be connected to the nearest-neighbor spacing ratio of positions of classical particles of a harmonically confined log-gas with inverse temperature $\beta'(k)$ where $\beta'(k)$ is an analytical function that depends on $k$ and the Dyson's index $\beta=1,2,$ and $4$ that characterizes the properties of the associated Hermitized matrix. Our findings are crucial not only for understanding long-range correlations between the eigenvalues but also provide an excellent way of distinguishing different symmetry classes in an open quantum system. To highlight the universality of our findings, we demonstrate the higher-order gap ratios using different platforms such as non-Hermitian random matrices, random dissipative Liouvillians, Hamiltonians coupled to a Markovian bath, and Hamiltonians with in-built non-Hermiticity., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures

The striped patterns in rocks, characterized by thin dark bands and thick light bands, are a result of the natural processes that have shaped the rocks through in situ metamorphism. Notably, the dark and light bands are composed of similar minerals, with the dark bands containing additional trapped materials such as fluid pockets or extra mineral grains. Here we employed the Gray-Scott Reaction Diffusion model to investigate the interaction between two sets of virtual chemicals, denoted as 'u' and 'v'. The differing diffusion and reaction rates of 'u' and 'v' chemical orders lead to the formation of 180 degree out-of-phase chemical domains, resulting in striped patterns. Utilizing the Gray-Scott model in this manner, we gain valuable insights into the early microscopic stages of these geologically significant striped patterns in metamorphic rocks., Comment: 13 Pages, 4 figures

A geometrically nonlinear theory for field dislocation thermomechanics based entirely on measurable state variables is proposed. Instead of starting from an ordering-dependent multiplicative decomposition of the total deformation gradient tensor, the additive decomposition of the velocity gradient into elastic, plastic and thermal distortion rates is obtained as a natural consequence of the conservation of the Burgers vector. Based on this equation, the theory consistently captures the contribution of transient heterogeneous temperature fields on the evolution of the (polar) dislocation density. The governing equations of the model are obtained from the conservation of Burgers vector, mass, linear and angular momenta, and the First Law. The Second Law is used to deduce the thermodynamical driving forces for dislocation velocity. An evolution equation for temperature is obtained from the First Law and the Helmholtz free energy density, which is taken as a function of the following measurable quantities: elastic distortion, temperature and the dislocation density (the theory allows prescribing additional measurable quantities as internal state variables if needed). Furthermore, the theory allows one to compute the Taylor-Quinney factor, which is material and strain rate dependent. We explore $U(1)_{L_e-L_\mu}$ gauge extension of the Standard Model with particle content enlarged by three neutral fermions, of which the lightest one contributes to dark matter content of the Universe. The scalar sector is enriched with a $\tilde{R}_2$ scalar leptoquark doublet to investigate flavor anomalies in $B$-meson sector, an additional inert scalar doublet to realize neutrino mass at one loop and a scalar singlet to spontaneously break the new $U(1)$. We discuss dark matter relic density and direct detection cross section in scalar and gauge portals. New physics contribution for $b \to s$ transition comes from penguin diagrams with $Z^\prime$, leptquark and new fermions. We analyze the constraints on the model parameters from the established observables of $B \to K^{(*)} \mu^+ \mu^-$ and $B_s\to \phi \mu^+ \mu^-$ decay channels. Utilizing the permissible parameter space consistent with both flavor and dark sectors, we discuss the impact on various observables such as branching ratio, forward-backward asymmetry, longitudinal polarisation asymmetry, and also lepton non-universality of $\Lambda_b \to \Lambda ^* (1520) (\to pK) \ell ^+\ell ^-$ decay channel., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures

This work explores classical discrete multiple orthogonal polynomials, including Hahn, Meixner of the first and second kinds, Kravchuk, and Charlier polynomials, with an arbitrary number of weights. Explicit expressions for the recursion coefficients of Hahn multiple orthogonal polynomials are derived. By leveraging the multiple Askey scheme and the recently discovered explicit hypergeometric representation of type I multiple Hahn polynomials, corresponding explicit hypergeometric representations are provided for the type I polynomials and recursion coefficients of all the aforementioned descendants within the Askey scheme. Additionally, integral representations for these families within the Hahn class in the Askey scheme are presented. The field of artificial intelligence faces significant challenges in achieving both biological plausibility and computational efficiency, particularly in visual learning tasks. Current artificial neural networks, such as convolutional neural networks, rely on techniques like backpropagation and weight sharing, which do not align with the brain's natural information processing methods. To address these issues, we propose the Memory Network, a model inspired by biological principles that avoids backpropagation and convolutions, and operates in a single pass. This approach enables rapid and efficient learning, mimicking the brain's ability to adapt quickly with minimal exposure to data. Our experiments demonstrate that the Memory Network achieves efficient and biologically plausible learning, showing strong performance on simpler datasets like MNIST. However, further refinement is needed for the model to handle more complex datasets such as CIFAR10, highlighting the need to develop new algorithms and techniques that closely align with biological processes while maintaining computational efficiency., Comment: 2024

Measurements from the LHCb experiment and $B$ factories have revealed several discrepancies in angular observables of rare semileptonic $B$ decays involving the quark-level transition $b \to s \ell^+ \ell^-$. In this work, we conduct a model-independent comparative analysis of the rare semileptonic decays of baryons $\Lambda_b$, $\Sigma_b$ and $\Xi_b$, exploring various new physics scenarios. Our analysis includes predictions for branching ratios and angular observables, including forward-backward asymmetry, longitudinal polarization fractions, and lepton flavor universality ratios, both within the Standard Model and across six distinct new physics scenarios. Notably, we find that certain new physics scenarios significantly affect the observables in the $(\Lambda_b, \Sigma_b, \Xi_b) \to (\Lambda, \Sigma, \Xi) \mu^+ \mu^-$ processes., Comment: 28 pages, 8 figures

Low trust remains a significant barrier to Autonomous Vehicle (AV) adoption. To design trustworthy AVs, we need to better understand the individual traits, attitudes, and experiences that impact people's trust judgements. We use machine learning to understand the most important factors that contribute to young adult trust based on a comprehensive set of personal factors gathered via survey (n = 1457). Factors ranged from psychosocial and cognitive attributes to driving style, experiences, and perceived AV risks and benefits. Using the explainable AI technique SHAP, we found that perceptions of AV risks and benefits, attitudes toward feasibility and usability, institutional trust, prior experience, and a person's mental model are the most important predictors. Surprisingly, psychosocial and many technology- and driving-specific factors were not strong predictors. We present a new complexification scheme based on the classical double layer potential for the solution of the Helmholtz equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions in compactly perturbed half-spaces in two and three dimensions. The kernel for the double layer potential is the normal derivative of the free-space Green's function, which has a well-known analytic continuation into the complex plane as a function of both target and source locations. Here, we prove that - when the incident data are analytic and satisfy a precise asymptotic estimate - the solution to the boundary integral equation itself admits an analytic continuation into specific regions of the complex plane, and satisfies a related asymptotic estimate (this class of data includes both plane waves and the field induced by point sources). We then show that, with a carefully chosen contour deformation, the oscillatory integrals are converted to exponentially decaying integrals, effectively reducing the infinite domain to a domain of finite size. Our scheme is different from existing methods that use complex coordinate transformations, such as perfectly matched layers, or absorbing regions, such as the gradual complexification of the governing wavenumber. More precisely, in our method, we are still solving a boundary integral equation, albeit on a truncated, complexified version of the original boundary. In other words, no volumetric/domain modifications are introduced. The scheme can be extended to other boundary conditions, to open wave guides and to layered media. Single photons emitters (SPEs) are key components in quantum information applications and are commonly generated in 2D materials by inhomogeneous strain engineering. Here, we report an alternative approach that involves a 2D semiconductor/2D magnet heterostructure. The optical study of the WSe2/CrSBr heterostructures reveals several new emission lines at lower energies compared to characteristic WSe2 emissions, that are assigned to localized excitons. Further investigation demonstrates that one of these emergent lines is an SPE with a strong valley polarization response and large energy shift with the field-induced metamagnetic transition in CrSBr, linking it to the magnetic proximity effect of the adjacent CrSBr layer. In contrast to previous reports on WSe2 that only allow tuning of the SPEs by out-of-plane magnetic field, our emitter is sensitive to both in- and out-of-plane fields. This work explores the use of polarization-resolved high harmonic generation (HHG) spectroscopy to investigate the quantum phases and transitions in the correlated charge density wave (CDW) phase of TiSe$_2$. Unlike previous studies focusing on crystallographic changes, the research examines the reordering that occurs within the CDW phase as the material is cooled from room temperature to 14 K. By linking ultrafast field-driven dynamics to the material's potential landscape, the study demonstrates how HHG is sensitive to quantum phase transitions. The findings reveal an anisotropic component below the CDW transition temperature, providing new insights into the nature of this phase. We explore recent advancements in the understanding and manipulation of vacuum energy in quantum physics, with a focus on the quantum energy teleportation (QET) protocol. Traditional QET protocols extract energy from what we refer to as a ``quasi-vacuum'' state, but the extracted quantum energy is dissipated into classical devices, limiting its practical utility. To address this limitation, we propose an enhanced QET protocol that incorporates an additional qubit, enabling the stored energy to be stored within a quantum register for future use. We experimentally validated this enhanced protocol using IBM superconducting quantum computers, demonstrating its feasibility and potential for future applications in quantum energy manipulation., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

The persistent anomalies observed in $B$ mesons related to $b \to s \mu^+ \mu^-$ transitions point to the potential for new physics beyond the Standard Model. To explore this further, we conduct an analysis of the exclusive semileptonic decays $B_c\to D_s^{(*)} \mu^+ \mu^-$ within an effective field theory formalism. We perform a global fit to new (axial)vector couplings using the current experimental data for $b \to s \mu^+ \mu^-$ transitions. We compute the branching ratios and physical observables such as forward-backward asymmetries, lepton polarization asymmetries, form factor independent observables for $B_c\to D_s^{(*)} \mu^+ \mu^-$, both within the Standard Model and in new physics scenarios. Discrepancies have been noted between experimental measurements and Standard Model predictions for various observables related to the $B\to(K, K^*,\phi) ll$ processes. Recently, the Belle-II Collaboration observed a $2.8\sigma$ deviation from Standard Model predictions in the branching ratio of the $B \to K \nu_l \bar{\nu_l}$ decay mode. In this context, we investigate the exclusive semileptonic $B_c\to D_s^{*}\mu^+ \mu^-$ decay mode, mediated by $b\to s$ quark level transition, using Effective Field Theory formalism. We study nonequilibrium steady state (NESS) transport in a boundary driven one-dimensional fermionic lattice setup which is further subjected to particle loss. We analyze the system size scaling of conductance at zero temperature for different values of the chemical potential of the boundary reservoirs. We consider a variety of loss channel configurations: (i) single loss at the middle site of the lattice, (ii) multiple but nonextensive lossy channels, and (iii) extensive lossy channels. For the cases (i) and (ii), the conductance scaling with system size remains robust (i.e., same as the case with no loss) for chemical potential within and outside the lattice band, while at the band-edge rich anomalous conductance scaling emerges. For case (iii), the conductance scaling becomes ballistic in the thermodynamic limit for any value of chemical potential. We explain the emergence of these different system size scalings of conductance by analyzing the spectral properties of the associated non-hermitian transfer matrices of the underlying lattice. We demonstrate that the emergence of anomalous scaling is deeply connected to the existence of exceptional points of transfer matrices. Our study unravels that by carefully optimizing the loss mechanism configurations, one can in principle realize systems with rich transport properties in low-dimensional open quantum systems., Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures

Computer-based analysis of Wireless Capsule Endoscopy (WCE) is crucial. However, a medically annotated WCE dataset for training and evaluation of automatic classification, detection, and segmentation of bleeding and non-bleeding frames is currently lacking. The present work focused on development of a medically annotated WCE dataset called WCEbleedGen for automatic classification, detection, and segmentation of bleeding and non-bleeding frames. It comprises 2,618 WCE bleeding and non-bleeding frames which were collected from various internet resources and existing WCE datasets. A comprehensive benchmarking and evaluation of the developed dataset was done using nine classification-based, three detection-based, and three segmentation-based deep learning models. The dataset is of high-quality, is class-balanced and contains single and multiple bleeding sites. Overall, our standard benchmark results show that Visual Geometric Group (VGG) 19, You Only Look Once version 8 nano (YOLOv8n), and Link network (Linknet) performed best in automatic classification, detection, and segmentation-based evaluations, respectively. Automatic bleeding diagnosis is crucial for WCE video interpretations. This diverse dataset will aid in developing of real-time, multi-task learning-based innovative solutions for automatic bleeding diagnosis in WCE. Large Language Models (LLMs) are prone to inheriting and amplifying societal biases embedded within their training data, potentially reinforcing harmful stereotypes related to gender, occupation, and other sensitive categories. This issue becomes particularly problematic as biased LLMs can have far-reaching consequences, leading to unfair practices and exacerbating social inequalities across various domains, such as recruitment, online content moderation, or even the criminal justice system. Although prior research has focused on detecting bias in LLMs using specialized datasets designed to highlight intrinsic biases, there has been a notable lack of investigation into how these findings correlate with authoritative datasets, such as those from the U.S. National Bureau of Labor Statistics (NBLS). To address this gap, we conduct empirical research that evaluates LLMs in a ``bias-out-of-the-box" setting, analyzing how the generated outputs compare with the distributions found in NBLS data. Furthermore, we propose a straightforward yet effective debiasing mechanism that directly incorporates NBLS instances to mitigate bias within LLMs. Our study spans seven different LLMs, including instructable, base, and mixture-of-expert models, and reveals significant levels of bias that are often overlooked by existing bias detection techniques. Importantly, our debiasing method, which does not rely on external datasets, demonstrates a substantial reduction in bias scores, highlighting the efficacy of our approach in creating fairer and more reliable LLMs., Comment: Accepted in AAAI Spring Symposium 2024

In lattice models with quadratic finite-range Hermitian Hamiltonians, the inherently non-Hermitian transfer matrix (TM) governs the band dispersion. The van Hove singularities (VHSs) are special points in the band dispersion where the density of states (DOS) diverge. Considering a lattice chain with hopping of a finite range $n$, we find a direct fundamental connection between VHSs and exceptional points (EPs) of TM, both of arbitrary order. In particular, we show that VHSs are EPs of TM of the same order, thereby connecting two different types of critical points usually studied in widely different branches of physics. Consequently, several properties of band dispersion and VHSs can be analyzed in terms of spectral properties of TM. We further provide a general prescription to generate any order EP of the TM and therefore corresponding VHS. For a given range of hopping $n$, our analysis provides restrictions on allowed orders of EPs of TM. Finally, we exemplify all our results for the case $n=3$.
