The detailed study of the strong gravitational lensing of a Kerr black hole within Quantum Einstein Gravity (QEG) is performed. We calculate the photon sphere, the deflection angle of light, and observables on the equatorial plane under the strong deflection limit in a vacuum. The presence of quantum effects reduces the radius of the photon sphere, the magnification, the position of relativistic images, and the time delays on the same side of the lens. However, it increases the strong deflection angle, the separations, and the time delays on the opposite side of the lens. By modeling M87* and Sgr A* as the Kerr black hole within QEG, we find that the time delays are more significant in M87*, while other observables are more pronounced in Sgr A*. Furthermore, we consider the influence of plasma on the gravitational lensing effect. Plasma causes an additional deflection of light, increasing the magnification, images position and the time delays, but decreasing the separations. More importantly, we calculate the time delays under the strong deflection limit in the presence of plasma, and they increase with higher plasma concentrations. Our research may help to evaluate the observational imprints left by such quantum effects in the propagation of light and the impact of plasma around black holes on gravitational lensing., Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures

In this work, we propose an efficient Video-Language Alignment (ViLA) network. Our ViLA model addresses both efficient frame sampling and effective cross-modal alignment in a unified way. In our ViLA network, we design a new learnable text-guided Frame-Prompter together with a new cross-modal distillation (QFormer-Distiller) module. Pre-trained large image-language models have shown promising results on problems such as visual question answering (VQA). However, how to efficiently and effectively sample video frames when adapting pre-trained large image-language model to video-language alignment is still the major challenge. Compared with prior work, our ViLA model demonstrates the capability of selecting key frames with critical contents, thus improving the video-language alignment accuracy while reducing the inference latency +3.3% on NExT-QA Temporal with 3.0X speed up). Overall, our ViLA network outperforms the state-of-the-art methods on the video question-answering benchmarks: +4.6% on STAR Interaction, +2.2% on STAR average with 3.0X speed up, ours 2-frames out-perform SeViLA 4-frames on the VLEP dataset with 4.2X speed-up. Pre-training has been an important ingredient in developing strong monocular depth estimation models in recent years. For instance, self-supervised learning (SSL) is particularly effective by alleviating the need for large datasets with dense ground-truth depth maps. However, despite these improvements, our study reveals that the later layers of the SOTA SSL method are actually suboptimal. By examining the layer-wise representations, we demonstrate significant changes in these later layers during fine-tuning, indicating the ineffectiveness of their pre-trained features for depth estimation. To address these limitations, we propose MeSa, a comprehensive framework that leverages the complementary strengths of masked, geometric, and supervised pre-training. Hence, MeSa benefits from not only general-purpose representations learnt via masked pre training but also specialized depth-specific features acquired via geometric and supervised pre-training. Our CKA layer-wise analysis confirms that our pre-training strategy indeed produces improved representations for the later layers, overcoming the drawbacks of the SOTA SSL method. Furthermore, via experiments on the NYUv2 and IBims-1 datasets, we demonstrate that these enhanced representations translate to performance improvements in both the in-distribution and out-of-distribution settings. We also investigate the influence of the pre-training dataset and demonstrate the efficacy of pre-training on LSUN, which yields significantly better pre-trained representations. Overall, our approach surpasses the masked pre-training SSL method by a substantial margin of 17.1% on the RMSE. Moreover, even without utilizing any recently proposed techniques, MeSa also outperforms the most recent methods and establishes a new state-of-the-art for monocular depth estimation on the challenging NYUv2 dataset.

Scene-aware Complementary Item Retrieval (CIR) is a challenging task which requires to generate a set of compatible items across domains. Due to the subjectivity, it is difficult to set up a rigorous standard for both data collection and learning objectives. To address this challenging task, we propose a visual compatibility concept, composed of similarity (resembling in color, geometry, texture, and etc.) and complementarity (different items like table vs chair completing a group). Based on this notion, we propose a compatibility learning framework, a category-aware Flexible Bidirectional Transformer (FBT), for visual "scene-based set compatibility reasoning" with the cross-domain visual similarity input and auto-regressive complementary item generation. We introduce a "Flexible Bidirectional Transformer (FBT)" consisting of an encoder with flexible masking, a category prediction arm, and an auto-regressive visual embedding prediction arm. And the inputs for FBT are cross-domain visual similarity invariant embeddings, making this framework quite generalizable. Furthermore, our proposed FBT model learns the inter-object compatibility from a large set of scene images in a self-supervised way. Compared with the SOTA methods, this approach achieves up to 5.3% and 9.6% in FITB score and 22.3% and 31.8% SFID improvement on fashion and furniture, respectively.

Sketches make an intuitive and powerful visual expression as they are fast executed freehand drawings. We present a method for synthesizing realistic photos from scene sketches. Without the need for sketch and photo pairs, our framework directly learns from readily available large-scale photo datasets in an unsupervised manner. To this end, we introduce a standardization module that provides pseudo sketch-photo pairs during training by converting photos and sketches to a standardized domain, i.e. the edge map. The reduced domain gap between sketch and photo also allows us to disentangle them into two components: holistic scene structures and low-level visual styles such as color and texture. Taking this advantage, we synthesize a photo-realistic image by combining the structure of a sketch and the visual style of a reference photo. Extensive experimental results on perceptual similarity metrics and human perceptual studies show the proposed method could generate realistic photos with high fidelity from scene sketches and outperform state-of-the-art photo synthesis baselines. We also demonstrate that our framework facilitates a controllable manipulation of photo synthesis by editing strokes of corresponding sketches, delivering more fine-grained details than previous approaches that rely on region-level editing.

Computing needs for high energy physics are already intensive and are expected to increase drastically in the coming years. In this context, heterogeneous computing, specifically as-a-service computing, has the potential for significant gains over traditional computing models. Although previous studies and packages in the field of heterogeneous computing have focused on GPUs as accelerators, FPGAs are an extremely promising option as well. A series of workflows are developed to establish the performance capabilities of FPGAs as a service. Multiple different devices and a range of algorithms for use in high energy physics are studied. For a small, dense network, the throughput can be improved by an order of magnitude with respect to GPUs as a service. For large convolutional networks, the throughput is found to be comparable to GPUs as a service. Spherical hydrodynamic models with a polytropic equation of state (EoS) for forming protostars are revisited in order to investigate the so-called luminosity conundrum highlighted by observations. For a molecular cloud (MC) core with such an EoS with polytropic index $\gamma$ >1, the central mass accretion rate (MAR) decreases with increasing time as a protostar emerges, offering a sensible solution to this luminosity problem. As the MAR decreases, the protostellar luminosity also decreases, meaning that it is invalid to infer the star formation time from the currently observed luminosity using an isothermal model. Furthermore, observations of radial density profiles and the radio continua of numerous MC cores evolving towards protostars also suggest that polytropic dynamic spheres of $\gamma$ > 1 should be used in physical models., Comment: 5 pages, MNRAS 466 L53 (2017)

Magnetic fields are an important ingredient of the interstellar medium (ISM). Besides their importance for star formation, they govern the transport of cosmic rays, relevant to the launch and regulation of galactic outflows and winds, which in turn are pivotal in shaping the structure of halo magnetic fields. Mapping the small-scale structure of interstellar magnetic fields in many nearby galaxies is crucial to understand the interaction between gas and magnetic fields, in particular how gas flows are affected. Elucidation of the magnetic role in, e.g., triggering star formation, forming and stabilising spiral arms, driving outflows, gas heating by reconnection and magnetising the intergalactic medium has the potential to revolutionise our physical picture of the ISM and galaxy evolution in general. Radio polarisation observations in the very nearest galaxies at high frequencies (>= 3 GHz) and with high spatial resolution (<= 5") hold the key here. The galaxy survey with SKA1 that we propose will also be a major step to understand the galactic dynamo, which is important for models of galaxy evolution and for astrophysical magnetohydrodynamics in general. Aims. The process of gravitational fragmentation in the L1482 molecular filament of the California molecular cloud is studied by combining several complementary observations and physical estimates. We investigate the kinematic and dynamical states of this molecular filament and physical properties of several dozens of dense molecular clumps embedded therein. Methods. We present and compare molecular line emission observations of the J=2--1 and J=3--2 transitions of 12CO in this molecular complex, using the KOSMA 3-meter telescope. These observations are complemented with archival data observations and analyses of the 13CO J=1--0 emission obtained at the Purple Mountain Observatory 13.7-meter radio telescope at Delingha Station in QingHai Province of west China, as well as infrared emission maps from the Herschel Space Telescope online archive, obtained with the SPIRE and PACS cameras. Comparison of these complementary datasets allow for a comprehensive multi-wavelength analysis of the L1482 molecular filament. Results. We have identified 23 clumps along the molecular filament L1482 in the California molecular cloud. All these molecular clumps show supersonic non-thermal gas motions. While surprisingly similar in mass and size to the much better known Orion molecular cloud, the formation rate of high-mass stars appears to be suppressed in the California molecular cloud relative to that in the Orion molecular cloud based on the mass-radius threshold derived from the static Bonnor Ebert sphere. Our analysis suggests that these molecular filaments are thermally supercritical and molecular clumps may form by gravitational fragmentation along the filament. Axisymmetric magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) can be invoked for describing astrophysical magnetized flows and formulated to model stellar magnetospheres including main sequence stars (e.g. the Sun), compact stellar objects [e.g. magnetic white dwarfs (MWDs), radio pulsars, anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs), magnetars, isolated neutron stars etc.], and planets as a major step forward towards a full three-dimensional model construction. Using powerful and reliable numerical solvers based on two distinct finite-difference method (FDM) and finite-element method (FEM) schemes of algorithm, we examine axisymmetric steady-state or stationary MHD models in Throumoulopoulos & Tasso (2001), finding that their separable semi-analytic nonlinear solutions are actually not unique given their specific selection of several free functionals and chosen boundary conditions. The multiplicity of nonlinear steady MHD solutions gives rise to differences in the total energies contained in the magnetic fields and flow velocity fields as well as in the asymptotic behaviours approaching infinity, which may in turn explain why numerical solvers tend to converge to a nonlinear solution with a lower energy than the corresponding separable semi-analytic one. By properly adjusting model parameters, we invoke semi-analytic and numerical solutions to describe different kind of scenarios, including nearly parallel case and the situation in which the misalignment between the fluid flow and magnetic field is considerable. We propose that these MHD models are capable of describing the magnetospheres of MWDs as examples of applications with moderate conditions (including magnetic field) where the typical values of several important parameters are consistent with observations. We study the hydrodynamic self-similar mass collapses of general polytropic (GP) spherical clouds to central Schwarzschild black holes and void evolution with or without shocks. In order to grossly capture characteristic effects of general relativity (GR) outside yet close to the event horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole and to avoid mathematical complexity, we adopt the approximation of the Paczynski-Wiita gravity to replace the simple Newtonian gravity in our model formulation. A new dimensionless parameter s appears with the physical meaning of the square of the ratio of the sound speed to the speed of light $c$. Various self-similar dynamic solutions are constructed for a polytropic index $\gamma>4/3$. Two (for small enough $s<1$) or no (for large enough $s<1$) expansion-wave collapse solutions (EWCSs) with central event horizons exist when $\gamma>4/3$, representing the collapse of static singular GP spheres towards the central singularity of spacetime. Such GP spherical dynamic mass collapse is shown to be highly efficient for the rapid formation of supermassive black holes (SMBHs; mass range of $10^6-10^{10}M_{\odot}$) in the early universe or even hypermassive black holes (HMBHs; mass range of $10^{10}-10^{12}M_{\odot}$) if extremely massive mass reservoirs could be sustained for a sufficiently long time, which may evolve into hard X-ray/gamma ray sources or quasars according to their surroundings. Self-similar dynamic solutions of a GP gas are also proposed for the stellar mass black hole formation during the violent supernova explosion of a massive progenitor star, the timescale of which is estimated of $10^{-3}$ seconds. There have been reports of possible detections of intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) in globular clusters (GCs). Empirically, there exists a tight correlation between the central supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass and the mean velocity dispersion of elliptical galaxies, "pseudobulges" and classical bulges of spiral galaxies. We explore such a possible correlation for IMBHs in spherical GCs. In our model of self-similar general polytropic quasi-static dynamic evolution of GCs, a criterion of forming an IMBH is proposed. The key result is M(BH) = L o^1/(1-n) where M(BH) is the IMBH mass, o is the GC mean stellar velocity, L is a coefficient, and 2/3 < n < 1.

We present optical light curves of twenty-nine novae in M31 during the 2009 and 2010 observing seasons of the Palomar Transient Factory (PTF). The dynamic and rapid cadences in PTF monitoring of M31, from one day to even ten minutes, provide excellent temporal coverage of nova light curves, enabling us to record the photometric evolution of M31 novae in unprecedented detail. We also detect eight of these novae in the near ultraviolet (UV) band with the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) satellite. Novae M31N2009-10b and 2010-11a show prominent UV emission peaking a few days prior to their optical maxima, possibly implying aspherical outbursts. Additionally, our blue-shifted spectrum of the recent outburst of PT And (M31N2010-12a) indicates that it is a recurrent nova in M31 and not a dwarf nova in the Milky Way as was previously assumed. Finally, we systematically searched for novae in all confirmed globular clusters of M31 and found only M31N 2010-10f associated with Bol 126. The specific nova rate in the M31 globular cluster system is thus about one per year which is not enhanced relative to the rate outside the globular cluster system., Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures, submitted to ApJ

In reference to Jupiter south polar quasi-periodic 40-50 min (QP-40) activities and the model scenario for global QP-40 oscillations of the Jovian inner radiation belt (IRB), we validate relevant predictions and confirmations by amassing empirical evidence from Ulysses, Cassini, Chandra, Galileo, XMM-Newton, and Advanced Composition Explorer for Jupiter north polar QP-40 activities. We report ground 6cm radio observations of Jupiter by Urumqi 25m telescope for synchrotron intensity bursty variations of the Jovian IRB and show their likely correlations with the recurrent arrival of high-speed solar winds at Jupiter.

A spherically symmetric hydrodynamic stellar core collapse under gravity is time-dependent and may become unstable once disturbed. Specifically for a homologously collapse of stellar core characterized by a polytropic exponent \Gamma=4/3, we examine oscillations and/or instabilities of three dimensional (3D) general polytropic perturbations. For compressible 3D perturbations, the polytropic index \gamma of perturbations can differ from \Gamma=4/3 of the general polytropic hydrodynamic background flow. Our model formulation here is more general and allows the existence of internal gravity g(-)-modes and/or g(+)-modes. Eigenvalues and eigen-functions of various oscillatory and unstable perturbation modes are computed. As studied in several specialized cases of Goldreich & Weber and of Cao & Lou, we further confirm that acoustic p-modes and surface f-modes remain stable in the current more general situations. In comparison, g(-)-modes and sufficiently high radial order g(+)-modes are unstable, leading to inevitable convective motions within the collapsing stellar interior. Unstable growths of 3D g-mode disturbances are governed dominantly by the angular momentum conservation and modified by the gas pressure restoring force. We note in particular that unstable temporal growths of 3D vortical perturbations exist even when the specific entropy distribution becomes uniform and \gamma=\Gamma=4/3. Conceptually, unstable g-modes might bear conceivable physical consequences on supernova explosions, the initial kicks of nascent proto-neutron stars (PNSs) and break-ups of the collapsing core, while unstable growths of vortical perturbations can lead to fast spins of compact objects and other relevant results., Comment: 16 pages, MNRAS(to be published)

With proper physical mechanisms of energy and momentum input from around the centre of a self-gravitating polytropic gas sphere, a central spherical "void" or "cavity" or "bubble" of very much less mass contents may emerge and then dynamically expand into a variety of surrounding more massive gas envelopes with or without shocks. We explore self-similar evolution of a self-gravitating polytropic hydrodynamic flow of spherical symmetry with such an expanding "void" embedded around the center. The void boundary supporting a massive envelope represents a pressure-balanced contact discontinuity where drastic changes in mass density and temperature occur. We obtain numerical void solutions that can cross the sonic critical surface either smoothly or by shocks. Using the conventional polytropic equation of state, we construct global void solutions with shocks travelling into various envelopes including static polytropic sphere, outflow, inflow, breeze and contraction types. In the context of supernovae, we discuss the possible scenario of separating a central collapsing compact object from an outgoing gas envelope with a powerful void in dynamic expansion. Initially, a central bubble is carved out by an extremely powerful neutrinosphere. After the escape of neutrinos during the decoupling, the strong electromagnetic radiation field and/or electron-positron pair plasma continue to drive the cavity expansion. In a self-similar dynamic evolution, the pressure across the contact discontinuity decreases with time to a negligible level for a sufficiently long lapse and eventually, the gas envelope continues to expand by inertia. We describe model cases of polytropic index $\gamma=4/3-\epsilon$ with $\epsilon>0$ and discuss pertinent requirements to justify our proposed scenario., Comment: 20 pages, 12 Figures. Various spectral emission lines from star-forming molecular cloud core L1517B manifest red asymmetric double-peaked profiles with stronger red peaks and weaker blue peaks, in contrast to the oft-observed blue-skewed molecular spectral line profiles with blue peaks stronger than red peaks. Invoking a spherically symmetric general polytropic hydrodynamic shock model for the envelope expansion with core collapse (EECC) phase, we show the radial flow velocity, mass density and temperature structures of self-similar evolution for L1517B in a dynamically consistent manner. By prescribing simple radial profiles of abundance distribution for pertinent molecules, we perform molecular excitation and radiative transfer calculations using the publicly available RATRAN code set for the spherically symmetric case. Our computational results show that the EECC model reproduces molecular spectral line profiles in sensible agreement with observational data of IRAM, FCRAO and Effelsberg 100 m telescopes for L1517B. We also report spatially resolved observations of optically thick line HCO+(1-0) using the Purple Mountain Observatory (PMO) 13.7 m telescope at Delingha in China and the relevant fitting results. Hyperfine line structures of NH3 and N2H+ transitions are also fitted to consistently reveal the dynamics of central core collapse. As a consistent model check, radial profiles of 1.2 mm and 0.85 mm dust continua observed by IRAM 30 m telescope and SCUBA, respectively, are also fitted numerically using the same EECC model that produces the molecular line profiles. L1517B is likely undergoing an EECC shock phase. For future observational tests, we also predict several molecular line profiles with spatial distributions, radial profile of sub-millimeter continuum at wavelength 0.45mm, as well as the radial profiles of the column density and visual extinction for L1517B., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Spectral observations of molecular line profiles reveal the so-called `blue profiles' for double-peaked molecular lines with stronger blue and weaker red peaks as notable features for star-forming cloud core collapses under the self-gravity. In contrast, 25-30 per cent of observed molecular spectral line profiles in star-forming clouds or cores also show the so-called double-peaked `red profiles' with red peaks stronger than blue peaks. Gao & Lou (2010) show that these unexplained `red profiles' can be signatures of global dynamics for envelope expansion with core collapse (EECC) within star-forming molecular clouds or cores. We demonstrate here that spatially-resolved `red profiles' of HCO+ (J=1-0) and CS (J=2-1) molecular transitions from the low-mass star-forming cloud core FeSt 1-457 together with its radial profile of column density inferred from dust extinction observations appear to reveal a self-similar hydrodynamic shock phase for global EECC. Observed spectral profiles of C18O (J=1-0) are also fitted by the same EECC model. For further observational tests, the spatially-resolved profiles of molecular transitions HCO+ (J=3-2) and CS (J=3-2) as well as the radial profiles of (sub)millimetre continuum emissions at three wavelengths of 1.2mm, 0.85mm and 0.45mm from FeSt 1-457 are also predicted., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present theoretical results of a piecewise isothermal shock wind model devised for predicting the luminosity and surface brightness profile of diffuse X-ray emissions primarily from the inner shocked downstream wind zone of a planetary nebula (PN) surrounded by self-similar shocked dense shell and outer slow AGB wind envelope involving self-gravity and compare/fit our computational model results with available observations of a few grossly spherical X-ray emitting PNe. Matching shocked piecewise isothermal self-similar void (ISSV) solutions with self-gravity of Lou & Zhai (LZ) for the outer zone and a stationary isothermal fast tenuous wind with a reverse shock for the inner zone across an expanding contact discontinuity, we can consistently construct dynamic evolution models of PNe with diffuse X-ray emissions. On the basis of such a chosen dynamic wind interaction model, both X-ray luminosity and radial X-ray brightness profile are determined by three key parameters, namely the so-called X-ray parameter $X$, two radii $R_{rs}$ and $R_c$ of the reverse shock and the contact discontinuity. We find that morphologies of X-ray emissions would appear in the forms of either a central luminous sphere or a bright ring embedded within optically bright shells. In contrast to previous adiabatic models, the X-ray brightness peaks around the reverse shock, instead of the contact discontinuity surface just inside the outer shocked dense shell. We perform a non-radial adiabatic perturbation analysis on homologous conventional polytropic stellar core collapses. The core collapse features a polytropic exponent $\Gamma=4/3$ relativistic gas under self-gravity of spherical symmetry while three-dimensional perturbations involve an adiabatic exponent $\gamma$ with $\gamma\neq\Gamma$ such that the Brunt-V$\ddot{\rm a}$is$\ddot{\rm a}$l$\ddot{\rm a}$ buoyancy frequency ${\cal N}$ does not vanish. With proper boundary conditions, we derive eigenvalues and eigenfunctions for different modes of oscillations. In reference to stellar oscillations and earlier results, we examine behaviours of different modes and the criterion for instabilities. The acoustic p$-$modes and surface f$-$modes remain stable. For $\gamma<\Gamma$, convective instabilities appear as unstable internal gravity g$^{-}-$modes. For $\gamma>\Gamma$, sufficiently low-order internal gravity g$^{+}-$modes are stable, whereas sufficiently high-order g$^{+}-$modes, which would have been stable in a static star, become unstable during self-similar core collapses. Several observations reveal that dwarf galaxy Segue 1 has a dark matter (DM) halo at least ~ 200 times more massive than its visible baryon mass of only ~ 103 solar masses. The baryon mass is dominated by stars with perhaps an interstellar gas mass of < 13 solar masses. Regarding Segue 1 as a dwarf disc galaxy by its morphological appearance of long stretch, we invoke the dynamic model of Xiang-Gruess, Lou & Duschl (XLD) to estimate its physical parameters for possible equilibria with and without an isopedically magnetized gas disc. We estimate the range of DM mass and compare it with available observational inferences. Due to the relatively high stellar velocity dispersion compared to the stellar surface mass density, we find that a massive DM halo would be necessary to sustain disc equilibria. The required DM halo mass agrees grossly with observational inferences so far. For an isopedic magnetic field in a gas disc, the ratio f between the DM and baryon potentials depends strongly on the magnetic field strength. Therefore, a massive DM halo is needed to counteract either the strong stellar velocity dispersion and rotation of the stellar disc or the magnetic Lorentz force in the gas disc. Spectral molecular line profile observations of star-forming molecular clouds sometimes show distinct red asymmetric double-peaked molecular line profiles with weaker blue peaks and stronger red peaks. For some star-forming molecular clouds, such molecular transitions with red asymmetric line profiles and blue asymmetric line profiles (i.e. blue asymmetric double-peaked molecular line profiles with weaker red peaks and stronger blue peaks) may coexist in spatially resolved spectral observations, while for others, such molecular transitions with red asymmetric line profiles may completely dominate in spatially resolved spectral observations. Blue asymmetric line profiles are usually interpreted as signals of central core collapses, while red asymmetric line profiles remain unexplained. In this paper, we advance a spherically symmetric self-similar hydrodynamic model framework for envelope expansions with core collapses (EECC) of a general polytropic molecular gas cloud under self-gravity. Based on such EECC hydrodynamic cloud models, we perform tracer molecular line profile calculations using the publicly available RATRAN code for star-forming clouds with spectroscopic signatures of red asymmetric line profiles. The presence of red asymmetric line profiles from molecular cloud cores indicates that EECC processes are most likely an essential hydrodynamic process of star formation. With spatial distributions, we explore various profiles of molecular lines for several tracer molecules in different settings of EECC dynamic models with and without shocks., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

For dynamic background models of Goldreich & Weber and Lou & Cao, we examine 3-dimensional perturbation properties of oscillations and instabilities in a general polytropic homologously collapsing stellar core of a relativistic hot medium with a polytropic index of 4/3. We identify acoustic p-modes and surface f-modes as well as internal gravity g$^{+}-$ and g$^{-}-$modes. We demonstrate that the global energy criterion of Chandrasehkar is insufficient to warrant the stability of general polytropic equilibria. We confirm the acoustic p-mode stability of Goldreich & Weber, even though their p-mode eigenvalues appear in systematic errors. Unstable modes include g$^{-}-$modes and high-order g$^{+}-$modes. Such instabilities occur before the stellar core bounce, in contrast to instabilities in other models of supernova explosions. The breakdown of spherical symmetry happens earlier than expected in numerical simulations so far. The formation and motion of the central compact object are speculated to be much affected by such g-mode instabilities. By estimates of typical parameters, unstable low-order l=1 g-modes may produce initial kicks of the central compact object.

Emission line profiles of tracer molecule H$_2$CO 140 GHz transition from gravitational core collapsing clouds in the dynamic process of forming protostars are calculated, using a simple ray-tracing radiative transfer model. Three self-similar dynamic inside-out core collapse models -- the conventional polytropic model, the empirical hybrid model and the isothermal model -- for star-forming molecular clouds are examined and compared. The isothermal model cannot produce observed asymmetric double-peak molecular line profiles. The conventional polytropic model, which gives flow velocity, mass density and temperature profiles self-consistently, can produce asymmetric double-peak line profiles for a core collapsing cloud. In particular, the blue peak is stronger than the red peak, consistent with a broad class of molecular line profile observations. The relative strengths of the blue and red peaks within a molecular line profile are determined by the cloud temperature gradient. The conventional polytropic model can be utilized to produce molecular line-profile templates, for extracting dynamical information from line spectra of molecular globules undergoing a gravitational core collapse. We show a sample fit using the 140 GHz H$_2$CO emission line from the central region of the molecular globule B335 by our model with $\gamma=1.2$. The calculation of line profiles and fitting processes also offer a scenario to estimate the protostellar mass, the kernel mass accretion rate, and the evolution time scale of a core collapsing cloud. We explore self-similar hydrodynamic evolution of central voids embedded in an isothermal gas of spherical symmetry under the self-gravity. More specifically, we study voids expanding at constant radial speeds in an isothermal gas and construct all types of possible void solutions without or with shocks in surrounding envelopes. We examine properties of void boundaries and outer envelopes. Voids without shocks are all bounded by overdense shells and either inflows or outflows in the outer envelope may occur. These solutions, referred to as type $\mathcal{X}$ void solutions, are further divided into subtypes $\mathcal{X}_{\rm I}$ and $\mathcal{X}_{\rm II}$ according to their characteristic behaviours across the sonic critical line (SCL). Void solutions with shocks in envelopes are referred to as type $\mathcal{Z}$ voids and can have both dense and quasi-smooth edges. Asymptotically, outflows, breezes, inflows, accretions and static outer envelopes may all surround such type $\mathcal{Z}$ voids. Both cases of constant and varying temperatures across isothermal shock fronts are analyzed; they are referred to as types $\mathcal{Z}_{\rm I}$ and $\mathcal{Z}_{\rm II}$ void shock solutions. We apply the `phase net matching procedure' to construct various self-similar void solutions. We also present analysis on void generation mechanisms and describe several astrophysical applications. We study the self-similar magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) of a quasi-spherical expanding void (viz. cavity or bubble) in the centre of a self-gravitating gas sphere with a general polytropic equation of state. We show various analytic asymptotic solutions near the void boundary in different parameter regimes and obtain the corresponding void solutions by extensive numerical explorations. We find novel void solutions of zero density on the void boundary. These new void solutions exist only in a general polytropic gas and feature shell-type density profiles. These void solutions, if not encountering the magnetosonic critical curve (MCC), generally approach the asymptotic expansion solution far from the central void with a velocity proportional to radial distance. We identify and examine free-expansion solutions, Einstein-de Sitter expansion solutions, and thermal-expansion solutions in three different parameter regimes. Under certain conditions, void solutions may cross the MCC either smoothly or by MHD shocks, and then merge into asymptotic solutions with finite velocity and density far from the centre. The origin of ultra-intense magnetic fields on magnetars is a mystery in modern astrophysics. We model the core collapse dynamics of massive progenitor stars with high surface magnetic fields in the theoretical framework of a self-similar general polytropic magnetofluid under the self-gravity with a quasi-spherical symmetry. With the specification of physical parameters such as mass density, temperature, magnetic field and wind mass loss rate on the progenitor stellar surface and the consideration of a rebound shock breaking through the stellar interior and envelope, we find a remnant compact object (i.e. neutron star) left behind at the centre with a radius of $\sim 10^6$ cm and a mass range of $\sim 1-3$ solar masses. Moreover, we find that surface magnetic fields of such kind of compact objects can be $\sim 10^{14}-10^{15}$ G, consistent with those inferred for magnetars which include soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs) and anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs). The magnetic field enhancement factor critically depends on the self-similar scaling index $n$, which also determines the initial density distribution of the massive progenitor. We propose that magnetized massive stars as magnetar progenitors based on the magnetohydrodynamic evolution of the gravitational core collapse and rebound shock. Our physical mechanism, which does not necessarily require ad hoc dynamo amplification within a fast spinning neutron star, favours the `fossil field' scenario of forming magnetars from the strongly magnetized core collapse inside massive progenitor stars. Growing evidence indicate supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in the mass range of $M_{\rm BH}$$\sim 10^6-10^{10}M_{\odot}$ lurking in central bulges of many galaxies. Extensive observations reveal fairly tight power laws of $M_{\rm BH}$ versus the mean stellar velocity dispersion $\sigma$ of the host bulge. The dynamic evolution of a bulge and the formation of a central SMBH should be physically linked by various observational clues. In this contribution, we reproduce the empirical $M_{\rm BH}-\sigma$ power laws based on a self-similar general polytropic quasi-static bulge evolution and a sensible criterion of forming a SMBH surrounding the central density singularity of a general singular polytropic sphere (SPS) \cite{loujiang2008}. Other properties of host bulges and central SMBHs are also examined. With a self-similar magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model of an exploding progenitor star and an outgoing rebound shock and with the thermal bremsstrahlung as the major radiation mechanism in X-ray bands, we reproduce the early X-ray light curve observed for the recent event of XRO 080109/SN 2008D association. The X-ray light curve consists of a fast rise, as the shock travels into the "visible layer" in the stellar envelope, and a subsequent power-law decay, as the plasma cools in a self-similar evolution. The observed spectral softening is naturally expected in our rebound MHD shock scenario. During the gravitational core collapse of a massive progenitor star which may give rise to at least a class of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) associated with supernovae, a stellar core rapidly passes through a short yet important phase of neutronization, producing a huge amount of energetic neutrinos and photons which contribute to the total pressure within the progenitor core. The collection of neutrinos, photons and gas materials together may be approximated as a fluid with a polytropic index $\gamma=4/3$ under the action of self-gravity. With a substantial generalization and using analytical and numerical methods (Lou & Cao 2008), we recently constructed and examined various self-similar solutions to describe collapses, rebound shocks and flows systematically in a $\gamma=4/3$ polytropic gas mixture with spherical symmetry, and compare our results with those of Goldreich & Weber (1980). It is also possible to construct central void solutions without or with shocks. Various features and characteristics of this nonlinear relativistically hot gas dynamics, including asymptotic and exact solutions, are presented. This more general polytropic model analysis provides the dynamic basis of understanding the evolution of rebound shocks in supernovae (SNs) and the results may be also utilized to benchmark hydrodynamic simulations., Comment: 4 pages. We explore large-scale hydrodynamics of H II regions for various self-similar shock flows of a polytropic gas cloud under self-gravity and with quasi-spherical symmetry. We formulate cloud dynamics by invoking specific entropy conservation along streamlines and obtain global self-similar "champagne flows" for a conventional polytropic gas with shocks as a subclass. Molecular cloud cores are ionized and heated to high temperatures after the onset of nuclear burning of a central protostar. We model subsequent evolutionary processes in several ways and construct possible self-similar shock flow solutions. We may neglect the mass and gravity of the central protostar. The ionization and heating of the surrounding medium drive outflows in the inner cloud core and a shock travels outwards, leading to the so-called "champagne phase" with an expanding outer cloud envelope. Complementarily, we also consider the expansion of a central cavity around the centre. As the inner cloud expands plausibly due to powerful stellar winds, a cavity (i.e., `void' or `bubble') can be created around the centre, and when the cavity becomes sufficiently large, one may neglect the gravity of the central protostar. We thus present self-similar shock solutions for "champagne flows" with an expanding central void. We compare our solutions with isothermal solutions and find that the generalization to the polytropic regime brings about significant differences of the gas dynamics, especially for cases of n<1, where n is a key scaling index in the self-similar transformation. In various astrophysical contexts, we analyze self-similar behaviours of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) evolution of a quasi-spherical polytropic magnetized gas under self-gravity with the specific entropy conserved along streamlines. In particular, this MHD model analysis frees the scaling parameter $n$ in the conventional polytropic self-similar transformation from the constraint of $n+\gamma=2$ with $\gamma$ being the polytropic index and therefore substantially generalizes earlier analysis results on polytropic gas dynamics that has a constant specific entropy everywhere in space at all time. On the basis of the self-similar nonlinear MHD ordinary differential equations, we examine behaviours of the magnetosonic critical curves, the MHD shock conditions, and various asymptotic solutions. A theoretical model framework of spherical symmetry is presented for a composite astrophysical system of two polytropic fluids coupled together by gravity to explore large-scale shocks and flow dynamics in clusters of galaxies or in globular clusters. The existence of such large-scale shocks in clusters of galaxies as inferred by high-resolution X-ray and radio imaging observations implies large-scale systematic flows that are beyond usual static models for clusters of galaxies. Here, we explore self-similar two-fluid flow solutions with shocks for a hot polytropic gas flow in a cluster of galaxies in the presence of a massive dark matter (DM) flow after the initiation of a gravitational core collapse or a central AGN activity or a large-scale merging process. In particular, the possibility of DM shocks or sharp jumps of mass density and of velocity dispersion in dark matter halo is discussed and such DM shocks might be detectable through gravitational lensing effects. To examine various plausible scenarios for clusters of galaxies, we describe three possible classes of shock flows within our model framework for different types of temperature, density and flow speed profiles. Depending upon sensible model parameters and shock locations, the hot ICM and DM halo may have various combinations of asymptotic behaviours of outflow, breeze, inflow, contraction or static envelopes at large radii at a given time. We refer to asymptotic outflows of hot ICM at large radii as the galaxy cluster wind. As a result of such galaxy cluster winds and simultaneous contractions of DM halo during the course of galaxy cluster evolution, there would be less hot ICM within clusters of galaxies as compared to the average baryon fraction in the Universe., Comment: 26 pages, 20 figures

Presuming weak collisional interactions to exchange the kinetic energy between dark matter and baryonic matter in a galaxy cluster, we re-examine the effectiveness of this process in several `cooling flow' galaxy clusters using available X-ray observations and infer an upper limit on the heavy dark matter particle (DMP)$-$proton cross section $\sigma_{\rm xp}$. With a relative collisional velocity $V-$dependent power-law form of $\sigma_{\rm xp}=\sigma_0(V/10^3 {\rm km s^{-1}})^a$ where $a\leq 0$, our inferred upper limit is $\sigma_0/m_{\rm x}\lsim 2\times10^{-25} {\rm cm}^2 {\rm GeV}^{-1}$ with $m_{\rm x}$ being the DMP mass. Based on a simple stability analysis of the thermal energy balance equation, we argue that the mechanism of DMP$-$baryon collisional interactions is unlikely to be a stable nongravitational heating source of intracluster medium (ICM) in inner core regions of `cooling flow' galaxy clusters., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, MNRAS accepted

In the presence of self-gravity, we investigate the self-similar dynamics of a relativistically hot gas with or without shocks in astrophysical processes of stellar core collapse, formation of compact objects, and supernova remnants with central voids. The model system is taken to be spherically symmetric and the conservation of specific entropy along streamlines is adopted for a relativistic hot gas. In terms of equation of state, this leads to a polytropic index $\gamma=4/3$. The conventional polytropic gas of $P=\kappa\rho^\gamma$, where $P$ is the thermal pressure, $\rho$ is the mass density, $\gamma$ is the polytropic index, and $\kappa$ is a global constant, is included in our theoretical model framework. Two qualitatively different solution classes arise according to the values of a simple power-law scaling index $a$, each of which is analyzed separately and systematically. We obtain new asymptotic solutions that exist only for $\gamma=4/3$. Global and asymptotic solutions in various limits as well as eigensolutions across sonic critical lines are derived analytically and numerically with or without shocks. By specific entropy conservation along streamlines, we extend the analysis of Goldreich & Weber for a distribution of variable specific entropy with time $t$ and radius $r$ and discuss consequences in the context of a homologous core collapse prior to supernovae. As an alternative rebound shock model, we construct an Einstein-de Sitter explosion with shock connections with various outer flows including a static outer part of a singular polytropic sphere (SPS). In broad astrophysical contexts of large-scale gravitational collapses and outflows and as a basis for various further astrophysical applications, we formulate and investigate a theoretical problem of self-similar MHD for a non-rotating polytropic gas of quasi-spherical symmetry permeated by a completely random magnetic field. We derive two coupled nonlinear MHD ordinary differential equations (ODEs), examine properties of the magnetosonic critical curve, obtain various asymptotic and global semi-complete similarity MHD solutions, and qualify the applicability of our results. Unique to a magnetized gas cloud, a novel asymptotic MHD solution for a collapsing core is established. Physically, the similarity MHD inflow towards the central dense core proceeds in characteristic manners before the gas material eventually encounters a strong radiating MHD shock upon impact onto the central compact object. Sufficiently far away from the central core region enshrouded by such an MHD shock, we derive regular asymptotic behaviours. We study asymptotic solution behaviours in the vicinity of the magnetosonic critical curve. Numerically, we construct global semi-complete similarity MHD solutions that cross the magnetosonic critical curve zero, one, and two times. For comparison, counterpart solutions in the case of an isothermal unmagnetized and magnetized gas flows are demonstrated in the present MHD framework at nearly isothermal and weakly magnetized conditions. For a polytropic index $\gamma=1.25$ or a strong magnetic field, different solution behaviours emerge. In these cases, there exist semi-complete similarity solutions crossing the magnetosonic critical curve only once, and the MHD counterpart of expansion-wave collapse solution disappears., Comment: 37 pages, 36 figures, accepted by Astrophysics and Space Science

We construct magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) similarity rebound shocks joining `quasi-static' asymptotic solutions around the central degenerate core to explore an MHD model for the evolution of random magnetic field in supernova explosions. This provides a theoretical basis for further studying synchrotron diagnostics, MHD shock acceleration of cosmic rays, and the nature of intense magnetic field in compact objects. The magnetic field strength in space approaches a limiting ratio, that is comparable to the ratio of the ejecta mass driven out versus the progenitor mass, during this self-similar rebound MHD shock evolution. Self-similar shock solutions in spherically symmetric polytropic gas flows are constructed and analyzed in contexts of proto-star formation processes. Among other possible solutions, we model a similarity shock across the sonic critical curve with an inner free-fall core collapse and a simultaneous outer expansion of the extended envelope; the separation or stagnation surface between these two flow zones travels outwards in a self-similar manner at a variable speed. One readily obtains accretion shock solutions. Semi-complete self-similar solutions across the sonic critical curve either once or twice without shocks can also be constructed. Features of star formation clouds of our polytropic model include the mass density scaling in the outer flow zone $\rho\propto r^{-2/(2-\gamma)}$, the temperature scalings of the inner flow zone $T\propto r^{-3(\gamma-1)/2}$ and of the outer flow zone $T\propto r^{-2(\gamma-1)/(2-\gamma)}$, and the variable central mass accretion rate $\dot{M}=k^{3/2}t^{(3-3\gamma)}m_0/G$ where $\gamma$ is the polytropic index, $k$ is a constant, $m_0$ is the core mass, and $G$ is the gravitational constant. Spectral line profiles characteristic of the `envelope expansion with core collapse' (EECC) shock solutions are expected. Random magnetic field permeated in a partially ionized cloud can be incorporated into this theoretical polytropic model framework. We explore semi-complete self-similar solutions for the polytropic gas dynamics involving self-gravity under spherical symmetry, examine behaviours of the sonic critical curve, and present new asymptotic collapse solutions that describe `quasi-static' asymptotic behaviours at small radii and large times. These new `quasi-static' solutions with divergent mass density approaching the core can have self-similar oscillations. Earlier known solutions are summarized. Global stationary configurations of both aligned and logarithmic spiral MHD perturbations are constructed analytically within an axisymmetric background ofrazor-thin scale-free gas disc, which is embedded in an axisymmetric gravitational potential of a dark matter halo and involves an isopedic magnetic field almost vertically threaded through the disc plane. The scale-free index $\beta$ of the disc rotation speed $v_{\theta}\propto R^{-\beta}$ falls in the rangeof $(-1/2 , 1/2)$ where $R$ is the cylindrical radius. With the holding-back of a deep background dark matter halo potential, the isopedic magnetic field may be strong enough to allow for the magnetic tension force overtaking the disc self-gravity, which can significantly influence global stationary MHD perturbation configurations and stability properties of the scale-free disc system. Only for stationary logarithmic spiral MHD perturbations with a perturbation scale-free index $\beta_1=1/4$ or for aligned stationary MHD perturbations, can the MHD disc maintain a constant radial flux of angularmomentum. The variable radial flux of angular momentum in the radial direction corresponds to a complex dispersion relation. The marginal instabilities foraxisymmetric MHD disturbances are also examined for a special case as an example. When the magnetic tension force overtakes the disc self-gravity, the scale-free disc can be completely stable against axisymmetric MHD disturbances of all wavelengths. We investigate a theoretical MHD disc problem involving a composite disc system of gravitationally coupled stellar and gaseous discs with a coplanar magnetic field in the presence of an axisymmetric dark matter halo. The two discs are expediently approximated as razor-thin, a ring-like magnetic field, and a power-law rotation curve in radius . By imposing the scale-free condition, we construct analytically stationary global MHD perturbation configurations for both aligned and logarithmic spiral patterns. MHD perturbation configurations in a composite system of partial discs in the presence of an axisymmetric dark matter halo are also considered. We derive analytically the stationary MHD dispersion relations for both aligned and unaligned perturbation structures and analyze the corresponding phase relationships between surface mass densities and the magnetic field. Compared with earlier results, we obtain three solution branches corresponding to super fast MHD density waves, fast MHD density waves and slow MHD density waves, respectively. By evaluating the unaligned $m=0$ case, we determine the marginal stability curves where the two unstable regimes corresponding to Jeans collapse instability and ring fragmentation instability are identified. We find that the aligned $m=0$ case is simply the limit of the unaligned $m=0$ case with the radial wavenumber $\xi\to0$. We study the dispersal of a gaseous disc surrounding a central high-mass stellar core once this circumstellar disc becomes fully ionized. If the stellar and surrounding EUV and X-ray radiations are so strong as to rapidly heat up and ionize the entire circumstellar disc as further facilitated by disc magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence, a shock can be driven to travel outward in the fully ionized disc, behind which the disc expands and thins. For an extremely massive and powerful stellar core, the ionized gas pressure overwhelms the centrifugal and gravitational forces in the disc. In this limit, we construct self-similar shock solutions for such an expansion and depletion phase. As a significant amount of circumstellar gas being removed, the relic disc becomes vulnerable to strong stellar winds and fragments into clumps. We speculate that disc disappearance happens rapidly, perhaps on a timescale of $\sim 10^3-10^4\hbox{yr}$ once the disc becomes entirely ionized sometime after the onset of thermal nuclear burning in a high-mass stellar core., Comment: accepted by MNRAS Letters

We explore MHD solutions for envelope expansions with core collapse (EECC) with isothermal MHD shocks in a quasi-spherical symmetry and outline potential astrophysical applications of such magnetized shock flows. MHD shock solutions are classified into three classes according to the downstream characteristics near the core. Class I solutions are those characterized by free-fall collapses towards the core downstream of an MHD shock, while Class II solutions are those characterized by Larson-Penston (LP) type near the core downstream of an MHD shock. Class III solutions are novel, sharing both features of Class I and II solutions with the presence of a sufficiently strong magnetic field as a prerequisite. Various MHD processes may occur within the regime of these isothermal MHD shock similarity solutions, such as sub-magnetosonic oscillations, free-fall core collapses, radial contractions and expansions. We can also construct families of twin MHD shock solutions as well as an `isothermal MHD shock' separating two magnetofluid regions of two different yet constant temperatures. The versatile behaviours of such MHD shock solutions may be utilized to model a wide range of astrophysical problems, including star formation in magnetized molecular clouds, MHD link between the asymptotic giant branch phase to the proto-planetary nebula phase with a hot central magnetized white dwarf, relativistic MHD pulsar winds in supernova remnants, radio afterglows of soft gamma-ray repeaters and so forth., Comment: 21 pages, 33 figures, accepted by MNRAS

Using the fluid-magnetofluid formalism, we obtain axisymmetric stability criteria for a composite disc system consisting of stellar and gaseous magnetized singular isothermal discs (MSIDs). Lou & Zou recently constructed exact global stationary configurations for both axisymmetric and nonaxisymmetric coplanar MHD perturbations in such a composite MSID system and proposed the MHD $D_s-$criteria for axisymmetric stability by the hydrodynamic analogy. In a different perspective, we derive and analyze here the time-dependent WKBJ dispersion relation in the low-frequency and tight-winding regime to examine axisymmetric stability properties. By introducing a rotational Mach number $D_s$ for the ratio of the stellar rotation speed $V_s$ to the stellar velocity dispersion $a_s$, one readily determines the stable range of $D_s^2$ numerically to establish the $D_s-$criteria for axisymmetric MSID stability. Those MSID systems rotating either too fast (ring ragmentation) or too slow (Jeans collapse) are unstable. Our WKBJ results of (M)SID instability provide physically compelling explanations for the stationary analysis of Lou & Zou. We further introduce an effective MHD $Q$ parameter for a composite MSID system and compare with the earlier work of Elmegreen, Jog and Shen & Lou. Given a large-scale mixture of self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) particles and baryon matter distributed in the early Universe, we advance here a two-phase accretion scenario for forming supermassive black holes (SMBHs) with masses around $\sim 10^9 M_{\odot}$ at high redshifts $z (\gsim 6)$. The first phase is conceived to involve a rapid quasi-spherical and quasi-steady Bondi accretion of mainly SIDM particles embedded with baryon matter onto seed black holes (BHs) created at redshifts $z\lsim 30$ by the first generation of massive Population III stars; this earlier phase rapidly gives birth to significantly enlarged seed BH masses of $M_{\hbox{\tiny BH},t_1}\backsimeq 1.4\times 10^6\ M_\odot \sigma_0/(1\hbox{cm}^2\hbox{g}^{-1})(C_s/30\hbox{km s}^{-1})^4$ during $z\sim 20-15$, where $\sigma_0$ is the cross section per unit mass of SIDM particles and $C_s$ is the velocity dispersion in the SIDM halo referred to as an effective "sound speed". The second phase of BH mass growth is envisaged to proceed primarily via baryon accretion, eventually leading to SMBH masses of $M_{\hbox{\tiny BH}}\sim 10^9 M_\odot$; such SMBHs may form either by $z\sim 6$ for a sustained accretion at the Eddington limit or later at lower $z$ for sub-Eddington mean accretion rates. We intend to account for the reported detections of a few SMBHs at early epochs, e.g., SDSS 1148+5251 and so forth, without necessarily resorting to either super-Eddington baryon accretion or very frequent BH merging processes. Only extremely massive dark SIDM halos associated with rare peaks of density fluctuations in the early Universe may harbour such early SMBHs or quasars. We investigate self-similar magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) processes in an isothermal self-gravitating fluid with a quasi-spherical symmetry and extend the envelope expansion with core collapse (EECC) solutions of Lou & Shen by incorporating a random magnetic field. Stagnation surfaces of EECC solutions that seperate core collapse and envelope expansion propagate at constant speeds either sub-magnetosonically or super-magnetosonically. Crossing the magnetosonic line twice analytically, there exists an infinite number of discrete magnetized EECC and ECCC solutions. In addition to the EECC shock solution which could change the central accretion rate, the magnetic field can also affect the core accretion rate. As the magnetic parameter $\lambda$ increases, the core accretion rate appropriate for the MHD EWCS becomes larger. Under the frozen-in approximation, magnetic fields in the envelope expansion portion would scale as $B\propto r^{-1}$, while in the core collapse portion they would scale as $B\propto r^{-1/2}$. We discuss several astrophysical applications of EECC similarity solutions to the formation process of proto-planetary nebulae connecting the AGB phase and the planetary nebula, to supernova remnants, collapse of magnetized molecular cloud, to $\textrm{H}\ {\textrm{\small{II}}}$ clouds surrounding massive OB stars and to a certain evolution phase of galaxy clusters., Comment: 19 pages, 18 figures. accepted for publication in MNRAS

We explore self-similar dynamical processes in a spherical isothermal self-gravitational fluid with an emphasis on shocks and outline astrophysical applications of such shock solutions. The previous similarity shock solutions of Tsai & Hsu and of Shu et al. may be classified into two types: Class I solutions with downstream being free-fall collapses and Class II solutions with downstream being Larson-Penston (LP) type solutions. By the analyses of Lou & Shen and Shen & Lou, we further construct similarity shock solutions in the `semi-complete space'. These general shock solutions can accommodate and model dynamical processes of radial outflows (wind), inflows (accretion or contraction), subsonic oscillations, and free-fall core collapses all with shocks in various settings such as star-forming molecular clouds, `champagne flows' in H{\sevenrm II} regions around luminous massive OB stars or surrounding quasars, dynamical connection between the asymptotic giant branch phase to the proto-planetary nebula phase with a central hot white dwarf as well as accretion shocks around compact objects such as white dwarfs, neutron stars, and supermassive black holes. By a systematic exploration, we are able to construct families of infinitely many discrete Class I and Class II solutions matching asymptotically with a static outer envelope of singular isothermal sphere; the shock solutions of Tsai & Hsu form special subsets. These similarity shocks travel at either subsonic or supersonic constant speeds. The progenitor of type II-plateau supernova (SN) 2004dj is identified with a supergiant in a compact star cluster known as "Sandage Star 96" (S96) in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 2403, which was fortuitously imaged as part of the Beijing-Arizona-Taiwan-Connecticut (BATC) Multicolor Sky Survey from Feb 1995 to Dec 2003 prior to SN 2004dj. The superior photometry of BATC images for S96, taken with 14 intermediate-band filters covering 3000-10000\AA, unambiguously establishes the star cluster nature of S96 with an age of $\sim 20$Myr, a reddening of $\hbox{E}(B-V)\sim 0.35$ mag and a total mass of $\sim 96,000$M$_{\odot}$. The compact star cluster nature of S96 is also consistent with the lack of light variations in the past decade. The SN progenitor is estimated to have a main-sequence mass of $\sim$12M$_{\odot}$. The comparison of our intermediate-band data of S96 with the post-outburst photometry obtained as the SN has significantly dimmed, may hopefully conclusively establish the nature of the progenitor., Comment: 4 pages; 3 figures. It has been known for two decades that a tight correlation exists between far-infrared (FIR) and radio (1.4 and 4.8 GHz) global fluxes/luminosities from galaxies, which may be explained in terms of massive star formation activities in these galaxies. For this very reason, a correlation might also exist between X-ray and FIR/radio global luminosities of galaxies. We analyze data from {\it ROSAT} All-Sky Survey and {\it IRAS} to show that such correlation does indeed exist between FIR (42.5$-122.5\mu$m) and soft X-ray (0.1$-$2.4keV) luminosities in active star-forming galaxies (ASFGs).In order to establish a physical connection between the $L_{\rmX}-L_{\rm FIR}$ correlation and global star formation rate (SFR) in galaxies, we empirically derive both $L_{\rm X}-L_{\rm B}$ and $L_{\rm FIR}-L_{\rm B}$ relations. Futhermore, we propose a relation between soft X-ray luminosity and SFR in star-forming galaxies. To further understand the $L_{\rm X}-L_{\rm FIR}$ relation, we construct an empirical model in which both FIR and X-ray emissions consist of two components with one being closely associated with star formation and the other not., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, accepted by MNRAS
